CROSBY, STILLS & NASH ~ LIVE IT UP
ATLANTIC 075678210723 (Barcode: 075678210723) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1989 - 1990 Released: 1990

This is the fourth studio album by the iconic Classic Rock trio Crosby, Stills & NashFind albums by this artist. This album started as a Crosby & NashFind albums by this artist project, which than evolved into a trio album with Stephen StillsFind albums by this artist. Assisted by a plethora of guest musicians, like keyboardist Craig DoergeFind albums by this artist, bassist Bob GlaubFind albums by this artist, drummer Joe VitaleFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist and others, the trio managed to produce ten splendid new songs, mostly co-written by the trio members, members of the band and other musicians / friends.

Although poorly received both by the critics and the fans at the time, the music is characterized by the usual amazing vocal harmonies, great melodies and superb instrumental work, which is as good as anything they recorded earlier. The 1980s production techniques, synthesized sounds and other atrocities of the time are definitely present, hindering the intrinsic beauty of the music, but to be fair they can be discarded and ignored, certainly in a retrospective glimpse. Perhaps the trio members could have stuck to the acoustic approach and Classic Rock aesthetics, but if they did, they would have been accused of being outdated. You can´t win with the critics.

In historical perspective this album sadly remains overshadowed by the early work of the trio and the fact that it was released at the time when Classic Rock was being pushed out by other (then) contemporary musical trends, which in time led to the annihilation of Rock Music at large. For the true fans and connoisseurs of the trio´s recorded works, this album is an absolute must of course.

ANNA MARIA JOPEK ~ DWA SERDUSZKA CZTERY OCZY
UNIVERSAL 602517947825 (Barcode: 602517947825) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2005 - 2008 Released: 2008

This phenomenal Box Set, or rather book set, combines three albums by Polish vocalist / songwriter Anna Maria JopekFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. AMJFind albums by this artist), recorded over a period of several years in the mid 2000s. It includes the album "IDFind albums with this title", a CD full of demos and outtakes which did not make it to be included on "ID" and the live album "JO & COFind albums by this artist". Together these three CDs summarize the "ID" period, which was a groundbreaking step in AMJ´s development as an artist. Packaged with a marvelous book full of black & white photographs of AMJ and the participating musicians, elegantly designed and exquisitely printed, this is a piece of Art in every sense of the word.

Surrounded by a group of wonderful musicians form Poland and the world over she performs mostly self-written songs, mixing Jazz and World Music with the typical Polish melodic / lyrical atmosphere, which dominates the proceedings. The list of world famous musicians participating on "ID" is most impressive and includes saxophonist Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist, bassists Christian McBrideFind albums by this artist and Richard BonaFind albums by this artist, drummer Manu KatchéFind albums by this artist, percussionist Mino CineluFind albums by this artist, oud player / vocalist Dhafer YoussefFind albums by this artist, guitarist / vocalist Oscar Castro NevesFind albums by this artist and pianist Tord GustavsenFind albums by this artist. Polish musicians include keyboardist Pawel Bzim ZareckiFind albums by this artist, guitarists Marcin KydrynskiFind albums by this artist and Marek NapiorkowskiFind albums by this artist, pianist Leszek MozdzerFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Robert MajewskiFind albums by this artist, pianist / arranger Krzysztof HerdzinFind albums by this artist, who is in charge of the string quartet and orchestral arrangements (performed by the Sinfonia VivaFind albums by this artist Orchestra). The live album includes also organist Jan SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Henryk MiskiewiczFind albums by this artist, bassist Robert KubiszynFind albums by this artist and drummer Pawel DobrowolskiFind albums by this artist.

The music presents a complex panorama of sounds and ideas, which include many cross-genre excursions, vocal experiments, poetic vistas and intimate dialogs between the Artist and the world that surrounds her. AMJ has one of the sweetest voices on this planet and her big artistry is all about not to make sugary music, which would be quite natural for many other singers. She also has an incredible sense of rhythm in general and Jazzy swing in particular, which is quite rare. Her affinity to music originating beyond her native Polish / European sphere of influence is also quite remarkable. All these, combined with her unique expressionism as a singer and delicate, elegant, intricate vocal delivery make her one of my favorite singers of all times.

AMJ enjoys a superstar status in Poland, which usually is a sign of tasteless commercialism and total lack of any artistic values. Her ability to be extremely popular and at the same time produce first class music is therefore especially impressive. Although some snobbish Jazz circles in her country deem her commercial and populist, this is simply completely unjustified and probably a sign of narrow-mindedness if not worse. I find it hard to believe that anybody listening to this music would feel anything but total admiration, as it is simply perfect.

ANNA MARIA JOPEK ~ ID (POLISH EDITION)
UNIVERSAL 602517348424 (Barcode: 602517348424) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2006 - 2007 Released: 2007

Twelve brilliant albums in just ten years are surely an awe-inspiring record for even a most accomplished musician. Polish singer / composer / lyricist extraordinare Anna Maria JopekFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. AMJFind albums by this artist) seems to be unstoppable in her continuous path towards a secure position in the Pantheon of contemporary Jazz vocal achievements. Classically trained (at The Warsaw Music Academy) as a concert pianist, her Jazz singing was a second career opportunity, inspired by her stint at the Manhattan School of Music. The world of Jazz opened an entire new universe, which she embraced wholeheartedly and never looked back. Stars certainly smiled upon her as her career in her native Poland literally exploded, with her albums reaching Gold and Platinum sales one after another.

Her big international break happened when Pat MethenyFind albums by this artist agreed to record an album with AMJ entitled "UpojenieFind albums with this title" (note also Metheny’s memorable cooperation with Israeli singer NoaFind albums by this artist a.k.a. Achinoam NiniFind albums by this artist). This opened a gate for AMJ to cooperate with many more world-class musicians, as demonstrated on this album. AMJ sings mostly songs she either wrote herself or were written by her husband / musical soul mate Marcin KydrynskiFind albums by this artist. Over the years the couple created a vast songbook, which deserves praise and admiration for it’s consistent quality. This album is in many respects a glorious expansion of AMJ’s already remarkable accomplishments.

The creative process took over a year until fruition, with recordings in studios located across Poland, Paris and New York, with tragic personal events lurking in the background, which inevitably had a momentous influence on the outcome. The list of participating musicians is very impressive and includes such renowned Jazz and World Music artists as saxophonist Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist (his solos are a sweet reminder of his fabulous work alongside StingFind albums by this artist), percussionist Mino CineluFind albums by this artist, bassist Christian McBrideFind albums by this artist, bassist Richard BonaFind albums by this artist, singer and oud player Dhafer YoussefFind albums by this artist, singer and guitarist Oscar Castro NevesFind albums by this artist and percussionist Manu KatchéFind albums by this artist. Top Polish players like Robert MajewskiFind albums by this artist (flugelhorn) and Leszek MozdzerFind albums by this artist (piano) also participate, alongside AMJ’s regulars: Pawel Bzim ZareckiFind albums by this artist (keyboards), Marcin Kydrynski (guitar) and Marek NapiórkowskiFind albums by this artist (guitar). The music (as already mentioned) is an extension of AMJ’s existing repertoire, with the usual deeply lyrical / melancholic ballads and highly expressive vocal improvisations beautifully spiced with World Music elements. Vocal duets with the African / Middle-Eastern motifs sung by Youssef are among the best of the kind ever attempted.

Although profoundly melodic, AMJ’s music is full of surprises, with ever changing rhythm patterns, unusual harmonies and intelligent instrumentation. Songs are often multi-layered and complex technically, but the overall effect is easy on the ear and goes straight into the listener’s heart. This fantastic talent to weave this musical tapestry is something I admire in AMJ above all her many virtues. Of course her outstanding delivery is right on the money time after time. Regardless of the mood, tempo or harmony, her deep voice modulating between whisper and shout remains clear, expressive, sexy and enchanting. The entire album is very skillfully put together, with exceptional sound quality and superb recording. Definitely a masterpiece of contemporary Jazz-World Fusion and an essential piece of evidence pointing to the fact that music (and Art in general) know no bounds, no borders and no limits. 100 % Brilliant!

Side Note: This is a Polish edition of the album. Apparently an international edition (with different contents) is due to be released later this year. Well, I can’t wait to put my hands on that. BTW the album went Platinum in Poland just 3 weeks after its release – apparently I’m not the only person who loves this stuff.

ANNA MARIA JOPEK / BRANFORD MARSALIS ~ ULOTNE
AMJ 001 (Barcode: 5906395769315) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2015 - 2017 Released: 2018

Every new release by the Polish Diva Anna Maria JopekFind albums by this artist is a celebration of Culture and a major musical event on an international scale, especially so when it involves a revered Jazz superstar like saxophonist Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist. Jopek, famous for her consistent independent Artistic vision, managed to create her own universe, where she does not need to compare or compete with the rest of the world, which enables her complete freedom of expression and self-determination, which only very few Artists worldwide were able to achieve over time.

Recording an album with Marsalis was a dream, which Jopek held on to since the time she heard him playing with StingFind albums by this artist, which of course was a huge influence on every true music lover at the time. The incredible chemistry that Sting and Marsalis demonstrated was an extremely tall order to follow, but Jopek never eschewed a challenge and this album proves that the realization of that dream was indeed worthwhile waiting for.

The album was recorded during two separate recording sessions, twenty one months apart, which considering the busy schedule that Jopek and Marsalis are both entangled in, is not as surprising as it might sound. The somewhat esoteric group of musicians includes percussionist Mino CineluFind albums by this artist, pianists Krzysztof HerdzinFind albums by this artist (who was also in charge of arrangements and conducting) and Marcin WasilewskiFind albums by this artist, multi-instrumentalist Piotr NazarukFind albums by this artist, bassist Robert KubiszynFind albums by this artist and Atom String QuartetFind albums by this artist (violinists Mateusz SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist and Dawid LubowiczFind albums by this artist, violist Michal ZaborskiFind albums by this artist and cellist Krzysztof LenczowskiFind albums by this artist). Polish Folklore Guru Maria PomianowskaFind albums by this artist guests on one track. The album presents ten tracks on the "formal" first CD and four additional tracks (one of which is an alternate version of a track on the album) on the "bonus" second CD. The songs are mostly originals, written by Jopek or co-written with her spouse Marcin KydrynskiFind albums by this artist, one song is by Herdzin, one by Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist (see below), one by Andrzej ZielinskiFind albums by this artist (SkaldowieFind albums by this artist) and one by Harry KandelFind albums by this artist with the rest being originally traditional Polish Folklore songs.

Musically the album marks a return to Jopek´s established modus operandi, which combines Polish Folklore and original songwriting, spiced with Jazzy arrangements and of course dominated by her highly original expressionism. The music is deeply soaked in Polish lyricism and melancholy and her decision to sing in the Polish language emphasizes these elements even further. Marsalis plunges into this Slavic environment with vigor and determination, as if Eastern European sensitivities were his second nature, which is quite remarkable. It proves not only his openness and ability to embrace diverse Cultures, but also his incredible musicality, which enables him to feel completely at home in this Slavic musical setting. It also proves, perhaps more importantly, that music is universal, as is human soul, and ethnic boundaries can be crossed and amalgamated on the collective plane.

Jopek, Marsalis and all the musicians involved in the recording of this album are of course veteran professionals in addition to their individual Artistic abilities, which results in the music being perfectly and incredibly sensitively executed. This music requires total dedication and every single note played by every musician at every given moment must be precisely articulated to achieve the desired effect. Luckily this team rises to the challenge admirably. The delicate and wonderfully written string arrangements performed by the Atoms add a superbly "angelic" aura to the overall sound and the folkloristic elements by Nazaruk spice the proceedings splendidly. Marsalis plays a series of breathtaking solos throughout the album, exactly as expected of course and Jopek, as always, manages to create goose bumps all over the listener´s body regardless if she sings lyrics or awe-inspiring vocalese.

When selecting the material for this album, Jopek requested the permission of Tomasz Stanko to use his beautiful ballad "A Farewell To MariaFind albums with this title", originally used in the soundtrack of a movie of the same name, as she was sure Marsalis would be able to embrace the lyricism of this incredible melody and create a marvelous solo while performing it. She was right of course and this track is definitely one of the highlights of this album, and at the same time it constitutes a mournful tribute to Stanko, who passed away before the album was released.

Another interesting piece is the excellent arrangement of the classic Harry Kandel (born in Lwow) Klezmer tune "A Night In The Garden Of Eden", which features Jopek´s hair-raising vocalese. Of course Klezmer music has always been an integral part of the Polish Folklore tapestry, in which the Jewish contribution was invaluable.

Overall this album is a Masterpiece from start to finish, which is no news to the numerous Jopek´s fans. There is not one moment on this album, which is not inspirational and eloquent, heartwarming and heartfelt. Both deeply Polish and at the same time universally appealing this music knows no stylistic or Cultural boundaries. It is beautiful and sensitive and at the same time deeply emotional, soul-searching and introspective. In short, this album delivers everything one expects to hear when Great Artists are involved. Thank you, as always, my Dear!

BRANFORD MARSALIS ~ A LOVE SUPREME
OKEH 888750690326 (Barcode: 888750690326) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2003 Released: 2015

This is a live recording by the American saxophonist / composer Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist and his quartet, which also includes pianist Joey CalderazzoFind albums by this artist, bassist Eric RevisFind albums by this artist and drummer Jeff WattsFind albums by this artist. The quartet performs the material originally recorded by the John ColtraneFind albums by this artist quartet entitled "A Love SupremeFind albums with this title", which in time achieved legendary status and is universally accepted as one of the very finest and most influential Jazz albums ever recorded. The album includes both the audio and video recording of a concert, which took place in Amsterdam in 2003, twelve years before it was released. The video also includes interviews with many musicians, including Coltrane´s wife Alice ColtraneFind albums by this artist and other bonus footage.

Sometimes I am utterly speechless and the only thing to do is spread one´s arms and take a long look at the sky. Why on earth would anybody touch a sacred, universally admired piece of human Genius and mess with it is beyond me, especially a musician of the status of Branford Marsalis. What was he trying to do; to imitate, to improve, to re-think, to re-construct, to de-construct Coltrane´s music? Sadly none of the above is even remotely close to what is happening on this album, since actually nothing is happening. Four musicians play Coltrane´s music, without feeling, without passion, without respect…

This album is an act of profanity as far as Coltrane´s memory is concerned, and an insult to Jazz. In the forty years of Jazz creativity that passed between the time Coltrane recorded this immortal music and the time Marsalis has his way with it were brutally dumped into the waste bin of Culture, as this album not only does not offer anything innovative about Coltrane´s music but trivializes it by pretentiously copying it.

Perhaps this album is an epitome of American Jazz, which has been almost completely brain dead since Coltrane´s death and never managed to produce another Prophet of his magnitude. Many have tried, Marsalis among them, but none got even close. Some things are best left alone, and this album is a classic example of what happens when they are not.

If you love, cherish and admire "A Love Supreme", please do not listen to this album!

WYNTON MARSALIS ~ J MOOD
WOUNDED BIRD 4308 (Barcode: 664140430822) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1986 Released: 2007

Following the departure of saxophonist Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist tightened his group into a quartet. The decision at the time not to replace Branford with another saxophonist and create a trumpet quartet, seemingly a more limited musical vehicle, was a completely conscious one and as far as Wynton was concerned he needed to concentrate the attention totally on his performances, polishing his technique and pushing his skills as player and composer beyond anything previously witnessed. The quartet with excellent new pianist Marcus RobertsFind albums by this artist, bassist Robert HurstFind albums by this artist and drummer Jeff WattsFind albums by this artist became an incredibly tight unit, able to deliver music of the highest quality and always challenging the listener with its virtuosity and intelligence. Wynton´s compositions became more flexible and presented a wider scope of emotional delivery. This album presents a gentler, more lyrical Wynton, playing mostly his original compositions, most of which are slow tempo ballads. The relaxed and almost lush atmosphere of the music brings up gentle memories of some of the early Miles DavisFind albums by this artist work, but Wynton plays more around with the sound as opposed to Miles dance with timing. The rhythm section is simply perfect. Roberts arises as one of the greatest pianist of the era, which he later proved time after time on his solo recordings, delivering incredible solos and superb accompaniment. Hurst and Watts keep the timing like an atomic clock, but allow enough of creative delivery to keep the music interesting not only on the melodic level, but on the rhythmic level as well. Overall this is a "perfect" Jazz album in every sense – everything is just right on and everything clicks in perfect harmony. Although rarely mentioned as a classic Jazz recording, perhaps due to the fact that it lacks the groundbreaking element of radical innovation, nevertheless this is a Classic (with a capital C), worthy of a honorable place in any serious Jazz collection.

WYNTON MARSALIS ~ THINK OF ONE
WOUNDED BIRD 8641 (Barcode: 664140864122) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1983 Released: 2007

Whereas the eponymous debut album by American trumpeter / composer / arranger / bandleader Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist was somewhat a mixed affair, comprising of two different recording sessions with two different rhythm sections, this, his second album, is a well tempered affair. Finally heading his own permanent quintet, with brother Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist on saxophones, the wonderful pianist Kenny KirklandFind albums by this artist, bassist Phil BowlerFind albums by this artist (or Ray DrummondFind albums by this artist on half of the tracks) and drummer Jeff WattsFind albums by this artist, Marsalis in truly in his element, firmly holding the reins of a leader. With Miles DavisFind albums by this artist influence still looming in the background, Wynton´s trumpet playing shows first signs of his lyrical side with less emphasis on the technical brilliance and more relaxed flow. He contributes three original compositions and the rest of the material includes a Kirkland and Drummond (one each) originals and standards by Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist and Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist. Wynton and Branford play well together, although a tension between the brothers was about to develop soon after, as a result of Branford´s tendencies towards more free-form improvisations while Wynton demanded a more conservative approach. Overall this is an incredibly solid album with no weak moments, flowing seamlessly from one tune to another, with brilliant soloing and tight but inventive rhythm section work. The 1980s were after all the age of the great return, when the two decades of experimentation first with Free form and improvised music and later with Jazz-Rock Fusion was pretty much over, leaving the Jazz musicians to re-invent modern Jazz using solid and well established ground while pushing the boundaries of virtuosity to the limit or perhaps beyond the limit – no other musician at the time was better at it than Wynton Marsalis and his crew. A classic!

WYNTON MARSALIS ~ WYNTON MARSALIS
WOUNDED BIRD 7574 (Barcode: 664140757424) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1981 Released: 2007

American trumpeter / composer / arranger / bandleader Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist is probably the most identifiable Jazz personality worldwide in the last three decades – Mr. Jazz himself! With Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and lately also Freddie HubbardFind albums by this artist no longer with us, Marsalis is also the greatest trumpet player still standing. Sometimes it seems that the responsibility that comes with these honorable positions appear to be just too much for Marsalis to handle, as he has been in the epicenter of a huge controversy concerning his personality, his public statements and even his musical achievements. It was all Guns (of appraisal) and Roses (of admiration) at first – everything just clicked for Marsalis: a prestigious recording contract with ColumbiaFind albums on this label Records, a massive PR campaign for his albums, Grammy nominations and awards and every other conceivable musical award in US and abroad (including the first ever Pulitzer Prize for music) and finally the appointment as Artistic Director of the "Jazz at Lincoln Center", a cushy and extremely well paid job, all these and more turned out to be just too much for his enemies (and he has many of those) to swallow. To say the truth, Marsalis has a mouth, which does not fall much behind his mouth´s extension, the trumpet. The man just loves to voice his opinions, and some of these are quite provocative and extremely controversial, all this on top his always highly stylish wardrobe and often snobbish behavior. All the above make Marsalis an easy target for hatred and criticism, mostly by bigots, short-sighted critics and most of all envious competitors. To tell the truth, I don´t dive a damn. For me, Marsalis was always, from day one, an example of a total musician. He not only has a tremendous gift, but he both feels and understands music, a rare combination with only a handful of musicians around the globe truly possess. His ability to perform and compose Jazz and Classical music only emphasizes his musical versatility and profound effort to study, learn and apply the acquired throughout his entire life. His love of early Jazz, from the Blues, the New Orleans Masters, Louis ArmstrongFind albums by this artist and up to Beboppers like Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist, and in parallel his disrespect towards Fusion and Free Jazz are fine by me. Not everybody has to love every kind of music and even not all kinds of Jazz… as long as they do whatever they do in such magnificent fashion as he does with his music, time after time. So here comes this album, his debut solo recording. As already mentioned, Marsalis is a perpetual student, and this was just his first step, so obviously he was relaying heavily on what he knew then, which for a trumpet player means one thing: Miles Davis. In many respects this album is a direct bridge between the classic Davis recording with the second quintet, almost two decades earlier. Although his quintet does not perform any of Miles Davis compositions or even tunes from the Master´s regular repertoire, the sound and stylistic approach is quite obvious. Emphasized by the fact that about a half of the album´s tracks feature that very same quintet´s rhythm section – Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist on piano, Ron CarterFind albums by this artist on bass and Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist on drums, and Wynton´s brother Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist sounds remarkably like Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist on his saxophones, the associations just keep flowing. Is it imitation? Hell no! Not even in the slightest, although Marsalis would be called a Davis imitator from now no, even when he completely changed his modus operandi on the trumpet as he went along. Again, who gives a damn? This is a magnificent album, full of superb performances and uplifting music, masterly played from start to finish. Period! And when one remembers that Marsalis was just 20 years old when this album was recorded… give me a break… this is a revelation. But Marsalis was a fast learner and his subsequent recordings will surpass this album, as good as it is, by far. Maturity has this effect on people; they just get better with what they do in time, provided of course that they are as talented as Wynton Marsalis.
Side Note: The fact that Columbia dropped from its catalogue almost the entire recorded output by Wynton Marsalis is a sad and tragic testimony of our times. Columbia made a lot of money from his albums for decades, but considering the state of the music industry, there are no sentiments left. This reissue is released on the Wounded BirdFind albums on this label label; kudos to the label owner for keeping great music alive!

STING ~ THE BRIDGE
A&M 602438587070 (Barcode: 602438587070) ~ UK ~ Pop & Rock

Recorded: 2020 Released: 2021

This is the fifteenth studio album by British singer / bassist / songwriter StingFind albums by this artist, recorded with a small group of musicians, which includes multi-instrumentalist Martin KierszenbaumFind albums by this artist, who also co-produced the album with Sting, guitarist Dominic MillerFind albums by this artist, drummer Josh FreeseFind albums by this artist and a few others including Jazz buddies saxophonist Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist and drummer Manu KatcheFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten songs, all written by Sting or co-written with Kierszenbaum, Miller and two others contributors. A Deluxe edition with three additional tracks and an outrageous price tag also exists.

In the booklet accompanying the album Sting, outspoken as always, whines about the pandemic and other personal problems, as if he was the only human being affected by it. Writing songs / music was an escape route for him, like for most musicians on the planet, except those who did not make it of course.

But Sting is Sting and you can’t take his songweaving talent away from him, which means that he can still put a nice tune together with some decent lyrics on top, even though he has hardly anything new so say since a long time. His vocals are as idiosynchratic as ever, and for those of us who love them, it’s way too late to change our minds now.

The production and sound of the instrumental accompaniment is pretty unnerving and often difficult to swallow, with American Pop mannerisms taking over, which taste sadly like a second hand chewing gum…

Overall, this is Sting and this is what he does, take it or leave it. For those who love him for what he did in the past, this album is a sad reminder of better times, but hope dies last they say, so I still hope he will find himself again sooner or later.

JAMES TAYLOR ~ HOURGLASS
COLUMBIA 5099748774828 (Barcode: 5099748774828) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1996 Released: 1997

This is the 14th studio album by legendary American singer / songwriter James TaylorFind albums by this artist. The album presents twelve tracks (and a hidden track), ten of which were written by Taylor. On the album he is accompanied by some of the best American studio musicians, and other musicians, many associated with Jazz, like saxophonists Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist and Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist. StingFind albums by this artist adds vocals on one track and cellist Yo-Yo MaFind albums by this artist plays on two tracks.

Since his debut released in 1968 Taylor continues to create a steady stream of refined albums, mostly based on his own songwriting, which over time accumulated to one of the most significant American Rock songbooks. His personal musical style remains pretty unaffected over time and his sincere, heartfelt lyrics and beautiful melodies are all timeless gems.

Overall, this is a beautiful collection of songs, sung with great emotion and accompanied by superb musicians, which for any Classic Rock fan is a no brainer. Once familiar with Taylor’s songwriting, one simply never gets tired of his creations!
