ANDREA REA ~ IMPASSE
LOSEN 166 (Barcode: 7090025831669) ~ ITALY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2015 Released: 2016

This is the third album by Italian Jazz pianist / composer Andrea ReaFind albums by this artist, recorded in a classic piano trio setting with bassist Daniele SorrentinoFind albums by this artist and drummer Marcello Di LeonardoFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven pieces, three of which are original composition by Rea, one is an original by Sorrentino, one is an arrangement of an Italian Pop song and two are standards.

The music is mainstream modern Jazz, which is melody based but ventures into more adventurous territory, like most contemporary European Jazz, using the melody as a vehicle to explore more open harmonic and rhythmic structures. Both the original compositions and the arrangements of the compositions originating from outside the trio are all very solid and the album manages to generate a cohesive musical vista, which flows elegantly from one piece to another.

The personal contributions are all very well executed, with the trio functioning organically as a unified music making organism. As usual in such circumstances, the piano is at the center of the listener´s attention, but the rhythm section supports the leader amicably and adds greatly to the flow and natural movement of the music. Rea manages with ease both the low key ballads and the up tempo numbers and his stylistic idiosyncrasies should make the connoisseurs of piano trio Jazz music very happy.

Overall this is a pleasant and yet definitely not trivial album, which is accessible by listeners well outside of the hardcore Jazz enthusiasts and which should keep fans of piano trios very happy. Definitely worth investigation!
