The 2CD album presents twenty-three songs, fourteen of which were composed or co-composed by Fame. The music presents, as appropriate for the occasion, the entire retrospective of Fame’s musical career, including his greatest hits, as well as the entire scope of his stylistic diversity, presenting Fame as a completely original songwriter and interpreter of Jazz / Rhythm And Blues songs, who had a few equals over time. His feeling for the Blues, which was present in everything he sang and played over the years, was undoubtedly his signature, but in his songwriting Fame contributed some of the most beautiful songs ever written, often with highly whimsical and humorous lyrics. This album, due to the Big Band arrangements, is one of the most Jazz oriented recordings by Fame, but by far not the only one, as he loved to perform and record with Big Bands, something I was lucky to witness in person several times over the years. Fame is definitely one of the very few vocalists who is able to blend in perfectly with a Jazz Big Band and a Rhythm And Blues combo with the same, impeccable result. The album is an orgy of great tunes, superb instrumental performances and brilliant vocals, which simply cannot leave any music lover cold, unless he is already cold dead. What luck this concert was recorded and eventually released on record (six years later, but of course better late than never). It has been one of my favorite Fame recordings since the day it was released and a superb summary of those first fifty-five years. God Bless!

GEORGIE FAME ~ SEVENTH SON / GOING HOME BGO 700 (Barcode: 5017261207005) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1969 - 1971 Released: 2008 Contrary to what most people know about singer / songwriter / keyboards player Georgie FameFind albums by this artist, his true aspiration was always to sing Jazz. Although he arrived on the British scene in the mid-1960s as a Pop singer, with several singles charting over the years, pretty soon he decided that a Pop idol was the last thing he wanted to be and moved away from the Pop image as fast as he could. By the end of the 1960s Fame was already singing in front of Jazz bands and his self-penned material had a distinctive Jazzy feel. This album includes two of Fame’s LPs recorded in 1969 and 1971 respectively, both great examples of his great sensitivity and musicality. Although perhaps only marginally Jazz, these two albums are a great example of the openness the music industry was willing to extend towards the artists, who wanted to do “their own thing”, something that lasted for a very brief period of time. Fame’s worm tone and great feel for the music are definitely worth a recollection and this album is a great trip down the memory lane. Probably for people in the autumn years, like myself, but still great fun.

He also recorded several albums in the 1970s for MPSFind albums on this label Records. His international Big Band / Orchestra, called Rhythm Combination & BrassFind albums by this artist, included the absolute crème de la crème of European Jazz musicians from Germany, Scandinavia, Holland and Britain. The list of the names reads like a European Jazz encyclopedia and includes trumpeters Palle MikkelborgFind albums by this artist, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Derek WatkinsFind albums by this artist and dozens of other first rate players. Herbolzheimer had a wonderful gift as an arranger and bandleader, treating his orchestra like a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist. His multi-layered and incredibly complex rhythmic arrangements are to this very day among the best ever and emphasize superbly the difference in approach to the Big Band between American and European Jazz. Although the music is in most cases very accessible, it is at the same time profoundly elegant and sophisticated, which means that it can be listened to on several different levels of comprehension. In retrospect this set also demonstrates that Major record labels at that time invested in interesting musical projects even if the costs were significant and the commercial significance unclear. The music is a wonderful amalgam of Pop / Jazz / Funk / Soul and many other sub-genres, being truly cross-genre before even that term was coined. For Big Band / Orchestral Music connoisseurs this is of course an absolute must and considering the fact that these albums are absolutely unavailable since decades, it is a miracle to have this music back in circulation. Wholeheartedly recommended and not to be missed!

Although Wheeler did not play on this album, one of his tunes was recorded. This is one of Wheeler’s recordings, which remains almost completely obscure and does not appear in most of his discographies. I was very lucky to get it from Kenny’s private collection. The music is a marvelous example of modern British Jazz, based on excellent original compositions and performed by the crème de la crème of British Jazz musicians active in the 1990s. The trombone quartet was quite a unique ensemble of course and they offered very unique arrangements featuring the trombone at the focus, proving the possibilities of the instrument in the hands of great musicians. Overall, this is an excellent British Jazz album, performed by first class musicians, which is absolutely worth digging for to discover the splendid music and superb performances by the entire team.

NEW JAZZ ORCHESTRA ~ LE DEJEUNER SUR L`HERBE DUSK FIRE 110 (Barcode: 5065001032981) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1968 Released: 2014 This is the second and also the last formal album by the seminal British Jazz Orchestra called New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist or NJOFind albums by this artist for short. Directed by the legendary composer / arranger / bandleader Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist the NJO was probably the most important singular British Jazz ensemble, which shaped the way British and European Jazz developed in the late 1960s. Despite the fact that the number of people, who are familiar with this epic recording, will hardly fill up an average British pub, it is still one of the best and more importantly revolutionary Jazz albums of all times, certainly as far as British Jazz is concerned. The fact that the album, which was released on LP in 1969 and almost immediately after disappeared from the shelves, had to wait for 45 years for its debut CD reissue confirms its anonymity and obscurity. And yet for the handful of British Jazz enthusiasts it always was the magnum opus of the British Jazz resurgence, when the music emerged for the first time as a truly new Art form, related to but fully independent from the American Jazz tradition. Why "new"? The origin of the name is not entirely clear but NJO was new indeed; it included a new generation of British Jazz musicians, which arrived on the scene mostly in the 1960s and had very little in common with the older "swing" generation, which completely dominated the British scene up to that period, and which was entirely immersed in the American tradition, strengthened by the presence of American bands in Britain during the WWII period. Several Jazz Big Bands and orchestras were active on the British scene since the 1920s and well into the 1960s, some quite excellent and even extraordinary, but those limited the artistic scope to imitating the trends originating across the big pond. If anybody wanders about the album´s title (and the title of the opening track) and its humorous sleeve design, Google it up, oh ye ignoramuses, or preferably visit the Musée d´Orsay in Paris and look for the original ;) With the recent parting of Jack Bruce, whom I was honored and lucky to know in person, the reissue of this album is a small solace in his memory and in memory of a generation almost gone…

It is also a superb display of the individual talents of these magnificent musicians, those who are still with us and sadly those who departed, like Thompson and Hiseman, who met as members of the NJO and created one of the British Jazz “power couples” or Ardley and Carr, whose giant talents are deeply missed. Overall, this is an absolute must have album for every British Jazz collector, especially in view of the fact that some of the music captured herein is not available anywhere else. For the cognoscenti, the album offers endless hints and interconnections, like a sensational version of the song “Jumping Off The Sun”, which became an anthem for the legendary ColosseumFind albums by this artist, which was founded by Hiseman and Heckstall-Smith, and included Reeves and Thompson, and so on…

It is an exceptional example of the artistry of orchestration and of course the actual execution of the sophisticated arrangements by a group of immensely talented players. For British Jazz connoisseurs this is a rare gem, which is know by very few members of the proud community. As usual with reissues, it is great to have this gem back in circulation, for new generation of fans to discover and for those who lost the copy of the original vinyl issue to re-discover past pleasures. Side Note The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet. In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker. Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically. Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

Using the big band in ways previously unexplored is a rare talent indeed and deserves both respect and admiration. This album presents a series of Towns’ original instrumental compositions and two arrangements, one of a classical piece by Claude DebussyFind albums by this artist and the other a John LennonFind albums by this artist / Paul McCartneyFind albums by this artist tune. Partly commissioned by the NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist, with which Towns cooperates on a regular basis, here they are performed by his own band. COLIN TOWNS ~ BOLT FROM THE BLUE PROVOCATEUR 1012 (Barcode: 5019148613398) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1990 - 1991 Released: 1991 The music scene is surely one of the greatest sources of unexpected surprises. The case of keyboardist / composer / arranger / bandleader Colin TownsFind albums by this artist is really an excellent example of strange metamorphoses that occur in the world of music. Take a man, who was the keyboards player and composer for the Ian Gillan BandFind albums by this artist, one of Britain’s most notorious rockers of the early 1970s, transport him 20 years forward and you get one of Britain’s most famous TV and Film composers. As if this wasn’t enough, the same person also has ambitions to become a Jazz composer and actually assembles a big band, which he calls the Mask OrchestraFind albums by this artist, writes a collection of Jazz compositions, arranges and records them and eventually releases an album on his own label, called ProvocateurFind albums on this label Records, which boldly states as it slogan: “Improvise not Compromise”. Now that’s something that truly deserves to be called a chutzpah! The amazing part of all this is that it not only works, but actually works wonders. Towns’ debut recording with his ensemble is a majestic piece of music, refreshing and illuminating, continuing the Ellingtonian tradition of big band Jazz composition and at the same time invigorating that tradition, taking it up to contemporary standards. It is difficult to imagine this music without actually hearing it, believe you me. Nothing compares to the power, multiplicity of sounds and harmonies, overwhelming euphoria and ecstasy of sound, like music performed by a great big band. Although this music was recorded almost 20 years ago, it lost absolutely nothing of its power and beauty, as well as element of surprise. It is almost impossible to believe that is a debut recording, but apparently miracles do happen, even in music. If you can lay your hands on this album, grab it, which won’t be easy as it is currently out of print, hopefully not for long. Gorgeous and essential stuff, deserving all the praise it received at the time of its release and certainly a superb document of the British Jazz scene, which apparently still has a few tricks hidden up in its sleeve.

The first album was recorded October12 and 31, 1967 and the second August 20 and 21, 1968 and released a year later (respectively) on the EMI / ColumbiaFind albums on this label label. The first album is a wonderful example of Tracey’s quartet work, based on his idiosyncratic compositions, often truly romantic in nature, which defined his style characterized by his singular chord vamping. This was the last recording with Wellins, who was replaced on future albums by Peter KingFind albums by this artist. Tracey and Wellins has a telepathic communication between them and played like musical twins, which of course is audible here as well. The last track is a surprising excursion into African rhythms, which finds Tracey playing the vibraphone. The Big Band album is a complete different cup of tea, with Tracey showing off his genius as arranger / Big Band leader, which always were his undeniable passions in addition to his composing and playing the piano. His love and respect to Ellington the composer is plainly apparent and his arrangements are highly unusual, almost diametrically different from the original Ellington recordings, which of course is a brilliant lesson in the differences between the American and British / European approach to using the Big Band as a musical tool. The original composition closing the album is a proverbial cherry on top of course. Personally this is one of my most loved Tracey recordings, but hey I love them all of course. Overall, these are two absolute British Jazz treasures, and their absence from the record market was a travesty. We should be grateful to Clark TraceyFind albums by this artist (Stan’s son) for bringing them back to life on the family’s ReSteamedFind albums on this label label, hopefully seeing more of these gems getting the same treatment soon. The quartet album is a brilliant example of Tracey’s openness towards the “new winds” that were stirring up the British Jazz scene, with strong Avant-Gardist / Free Jazz influences ventilating the scene. In complete contrast to many of his veteran contemporaries, Tracey had no problem whatsoever with these trends and flirted with them openly, as long as he was either enjoying or in control, as many of his recordings, like those with Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist or Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, clearly show. This quartet was not playing Free as such, but fiery improvisations and less strict rhythmic patterns are clearly audible, and the general carefree atmosphere testifies. The Big Band album is a complete different pair of galoshes, with Tracey showing off his genius as composer / arranger / Big Band leader, which always way one of his undeniable fortes (not that he had any weaknesses as a musician that I am aware of). The compositions are simply brilliant, the arrangements unique and the Big Band, exploding with talent, is riding the wind, soaring like there is no tomorrow. Considering the fact that this album was recorded in one day, it is truly amazing that the Big Band performs all these complex arrangements with awe-inspiring ease and elegance. Overall, these are two absolute British Jazz treasures, and their absence from the record market was a travesty. The album presents fifteen relatively short pieces, five of which are original compositions by Walter and the rest are carefully selected Jazz standards and one BeatlesFind albums by this artist song, all exquisitely arranged by Walter. Each and every one of these pieces is an absolute gem, perfectly rounded and complete like a mini-suite, representing all the best in British / European Jazz: delicate aesthetics, superb taste, intelligence and deep understanding of music. This album is one of the most perfect examples of large ensemble Jazz ever recorded and should be a schoolbook example of Jazz arrangement. The music is also beautifully performed by these Master musicians, who contribute perfect ensemble playing as well as beautiful soli, all relatively concise due to the album´s timing limitations, but nevertheless perfectly rounded and expressive. Altogether these seventy two minutes of music round up almost everything there is to say in a mainstream Jazz ensemble format. I have no idea how this nugget managed to slip under my radar for so many years; better late than never is the only solace. The music brings so many memories and associations about British Jazz and its history, that listening to it for the first time was a deeply emotional experience for me. Repeated listening sessions revealed the depth of the arrangements and the incredible craft involved in making it. It is a true masterpiece in every respect. I can hardly imagine a proper British Jazz collection being complete without this album being part of it, and therefore grab a copy as long as it is still available. You can thank me later on, after you have listened to it ;)
