This is a reissue of the debut album by legendary German pianist / composer Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist, recorded in a classic piano trio setting with no less legendary bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and American, living in Germany, Master drummer Fred BracefulFind albums by this artist. This album, which also marks a recording debut for both Weber and Braceful, presents eight tunes, five of which are original compositions by Dauner, one is by Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist, another one is by Mal WaldronFind albums by this artist (another US compatriot living in Germany) and the remaining one is a standard.
Originally recorded in 1964, this is one of the earliest German and European Jazz recordings, which symbolize the rebirth of Jazz in Europe, taking a radical step forward from the American Jazz tradition. The great Horst LippmannFind albums by this artist, my friend and founder of the L+RFind albums on this label label (named after the concert agency he managed for many years with his friend Fritz RauFind albums by this artist), makes an interesting and quite prophetic observation on the album´s original liner notes, which compares this piano trio with the legendary Bill EvansFind albums by this artist trio with bassist Scott LaFaroFind albums by this artist; he states that Evans and LaFaro revolutionized the role of the bass in a piano trio, bringing the bass to an equal level with the piano, and Dauner made the same giant step with revolutionizing the role of the drums, bringing them in turn to an equal level with the piano and the bass, something Evans never managed to do in his trio. Of course there is so much more to this album than just the change of the status of the drums – it revolutionizes the piano trio mostly by inserting the huge amount of freedom and space, while maintaining a perfect order and logic, not to mention elegance and sophistication.
As Lippmann says in his liner notes to the vinyl reissue from 1980, this album was light years ahead of its time and was fully understood and appreciated by just a very small group of Jazz connoisseurs, open minded enough to grasp its significance at the time. Even today this music sounds not only completely up to date, but also absolutely stunning, although over five decades passed since it was first recorded.
In retrospect this is one of the most pivotal European Jazz recordings, taking the Jazz idiom a giant step forward into the unknown (at the time), without compromising the tradition and at the same time bravely and unwaveringly crossing over into the European aesthetic, which was erupting at the time on the Continent, strong enough to penetrate even beyond the Iron Curtain.
This is an absolutely essential piece of European Jazz history, which should find a highly respected place in every meaningful Jazz record collection anywhere in the world. Thank God this music is still available for us to enjoy and not buried away and forgotten as so many of its parallels. The remastered edition offers a spectacular sound quality. An absolute must have!

German pianist / composer Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist was one of the most important forefathers of European Jazz. A prolific composer, bandleader and activist, his contribution to the establishment of European Jazz and its emancipation from the restrains of the American Jazz tradition is truly immense. Dauner, who in addition to his musical activities, was also a prolific painter, always looked at music as an expression of an overall aesthetic / cultural point of view, with philosophical / social and even political undercurrents. Over the years Dauner created a most impressive body of work, encompassing many quite different styles and directions, spanning straightforward (but always unique) Jazz, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Free Jazz and Improvised Music.
In the mid-1970s Dauner formed the revolutionary United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist – a multi-national group of superb European players, which brought Jazz-Rock Fusion to a level of absolute Art. He also co-founded the independent MoodFind albums on this label Records label, which for many years documented some of the most important and unconventional European music (mostly Jazz). His early recordings on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label (as leader and sideman) are in retrospect perhaps the most important from the historical point of view, as they demonstrate the boldness, inspiration and urge to explore uncharted musical territories.
Encouraged and supported by the legendary Jazz critic and resident MPS producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, Dauner could freely express his visions, regardless how bold they might be, especially at the time. For this recording Dauner formed a septet, which included some of his regular cohorts like cellist / bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and American (but living in Germany) drummer Fred BracefulFind albums by this artist. He added three excellent German young players: saxophonist Gerd DudekFind albums by this artist (who would later become one of the central figures of German Improvised Music and Free Jazz), bassist Jurgen KargFind albums by this artist and drummer / tabla player Mani NeumeierFind albums by this artist (later a member of the legendary Guru GuruFind albums by this artist group). As the last member of the septet Dauner selected the then little known French virtuoso violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, who was of course destined to achieve worldwide recognition later on.
The septet performs five of Dauner’s compositions, which provide a skeletal framework for group improvisations by the band members. The double bass / drums lineup allows for complex rhythmic patterns to evolve, and of course there is plenty of space for individual solo spots, but overall the music is mostly a group effort, Dauner uses “prepared piano” (i.e. differently tuned one) to achieve some novel sound approach. In retrospect this is a superb document of the birth of European Jazz, which takes the Free Jazz idiom and pushes it (here still ever so gently) into the Improvised Music realm. The music lost none of its power and inspiration over the years and for a “first time” listener should be quite an ear opener. Kudos to Promising MusicFind albums on this label for the excellent remaster and elegant packaging of the reissue. A must!

German pianist / composer Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist is one the most important icons of the European jazz scene. Active since the early 1960’s he has been in the epicenter of the European free jazz since the mid-1960’s and then in the mid-1970’s he also expanded his activities to the jazz-rock scene by forming (with other excellent European jazz musicians) the United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist. In the last two decades he concentrates on writing film music.
The piano trio, which is playing on this 1970 album, existed for several years prior to this recording, playing mostly free oriented music. Therefore, upon its release Dauner’s followers were completely taken by surprised by the music, which is a classic swinging jazz, almost a parody of swing if you wish. Obviously Dauner wanted to have a joyful, amusing look at the “middle of the road” jazz, which he does lovingly of course. Although at the first impression this music might sound as something done by George ShearingFind albums by this artist, in fact it is quite experimental and sophisticated. On top of the metronome swinging rhythm, Dauner and his phenomenal bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist perform some really hair-rising musical acrobatics. Weber wrote most of the material for this album, in addition to a couple of standards and one tune by his friend, the French violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist.
When asked at the time if this album wouldn’t be in contradiction to his Avant-Garde principles, he answered: “No, I’m not narrow-minded, and I never was. I don’t care what people say about me. The main thing is that the music is good and we all dig it.” I must say I absolutely concur to that statement. This is surely one of the most “good fun” jazz albums ever recorded. In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.
Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

This is an archival 2CD album presenting studio recordings by the iconic German Jazz / Fusion guitarist / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist. These recordings were done at the Biton Studios in Frankfurt between 1974 and 1982 and released on five LP albums on the studio’s own label, which are all remastered and included in this reissue. These albums were released as library music for use by Radio / TV / Film industry and did not specify Kriegel’s name or any other details, since he was at the time under contact with MPSFind albums on this label Records. The album presents thirty-seven original compositions, most by Kriegel and some by his band members, which were of course the same musicians that recorded with him the albums released by MPS over the years: keyboardists Rainer BruninghausFind albums by this artist and Thomas BettermannFind albums by this artist, bassists Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and Hans Peter StroerFind albums by this artist, percussionist Peter GigerFind albums by this artist, and drummers Klaus WeissFind albums by this artist, Joe NayFind albums by this artist and Evert FratermanFind albums by this artist.
Despite the fact that this music was never intended for commercial release and were not available to Jazz / Fusion fans at the time, it is a remarkable collection of excellent compositions, all superbly executed by Kriegel and his ensembles. The tracks are on average under three minutes in duration and the performances obviously do not feature extensive soloing, but the compositions are all first rate and Kriegel’s guitar artistry is documented here at its peak.
Overall, this is wonderful European Fusion album, performed by top German Jazz musicians active in the 1970s / 1980s, as well as an important addition to the recorded legacy by Kriegel, which is carefully curated by his archive, which hopefully will be released in its entirety in time. For guitar lovers and European Fusion enthusiasts this is an absolute must!

This is a reissue / remaster of the iconic double album by the German guitarist / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist, which was his third album as a leader and the second release on the MPSFind albums on this label label. Although recorded during the same session, the material was split into two parts, each on one LP (and now CD).
CD1 was recorded by an octet and features a brass section. It includes three prominent British Jazz musicians: saxophonist Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist. The other players are German Jazz musicians: trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist and bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist. Dutch percussionist Cees SeeFind albums by this artist completes the lineup. The CD presents four tracks, three of which are original compositions by Kriegel and one is an arrangement of a tune by Brazilian composer Edu LoboFind albums by this artist. Three of the tracks last for over ten minutes and the music is strongly Jazz oriented, including some Free Jazz accents.
CD2 was recorded by a quintet, without the brass and including Taylor, Weber, See and German drummer Peter BaumeisterFind albums by this artist. This CD presents eight tracks, six of which are original compositions by Kriegel, one is by Weber and one by Brazilian composer Caetano VelosoFind albums by this artist. The music is more Fusion oriented and the tracks are much shorter, with only one crossing the ten minutes in duration.
In retrospect this is definitely one of the fines examples of European Jazz-Rock Fusion, with a stellar lineup and absolutely brilliant musicianship and compositions. Kriegel was sadly underappreciated at the time, but his complete discography, including several excellent posthumous releases, definitely points out that he was a pivotal figure in European Jazz and Fusion.
Overall, this an absolute must have for every Fusion connoisseur, and one of the most important albums of the genre. Combining the best players from the leading European Fusion scenes at the time: Germany and UK, the music spark with inventiveness, virtuosity and innovation, completely absent from the current Fusion scene. This is a wonderful album by the German guitarist / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist, recorded live at the annual Jazzfest Berlin festival (active continuously since 1964 and still doing very well today) with a dreamy quintet, which also included vibraphonist Wolfgang SchluterFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Thomas BettermannFind albums by this artist, bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and drummer Ralf HubnerFind albums by this artist. The album consists of seven tracks, five of which are original compositions by Kriegel, one is an original composition by Bettermann and one is en extensive solo by Weber, credited to him of course. Four of the Kriegel´s compositions originate from his album "JournalFind albums with this title", released just prior to this concert appearance and one originates from his "House BoatFind albums with this title" album from 1978. Sadly this is one of the last albums recorded by Kriegel, who died in 2003 (it was released posthumously in 2012). This album also includes a DVD filmed at the concert, which does not include any additional audio material not included on the CD.
The quintet displays a very "typical" Kriegel attitude towards Jazz-Rock Fusion, personalizing the European approach, which is based on sophisticated compositions, delicate phrasing, space and freedom which allows for extensive improvisations and multi-layered interplay between the musicians involved. As a result these live versions of the tunes, which originate in studio recordings, are considerably more expressive and are by far longer in duration.
There is no doubt that Kriegel was one of the "coolest" guitar players ever; his highly personal style sets him apart from most other guitarists, not only in Europe but worldwide. He played long, relaxed notes, letting them float on the air and settle down delicately straight onto the listener´s soul. There is none of the typical Jazz-Rock Fusion neck-breaking guitar playing a hundred notes per minute; Kriegel was a complete antidote of that approach.
This album beautifully portrays the very special relationship Kriegel had with his musical partners. His duets with Schluter are absolutely stunning in their fragility and tenderness, but in fact all the contributions by the quintet members are nothing short of stellar. Weber´s bass is, as always, amazing with its melodious approach and harmonic choices and his solo piece captured here should be taught in music schools as an example of bass playing ingenuity. Bettermann plays a few incredible keyboard solos and Hubner switches skillfully between Free Form ornamentation and precision swing, both performed with equal virtuosity.
This is a wonderful document of the European Jazz-Rock Fusion at its best and a superb tribute to Kriegel´s talents and his contribution to music. It is an absolute must for guitar lovers, but all Fusion and Jazz connoisseurs should have a field day with this extraordinary piece of musical history.

This is a reissue of the fourth album by German guitarist / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist. It was recorded with a team of top European Jazz musicians at the time, which include British saxophonist Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist, Polish violinist Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist, German bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and Dutch percussionist Cees SeeFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, five by Kriegel and three by Weber.
The music is brilliant, as expected, and the album is a great opportunity to hear the atmosphere of musical camaraderie that swept Europe at the time this album was recorded, which resulted in many international projects like this one. For Polish Jazz enthusiasts this is a rare opportunity to hear Seifert on the verge of his tragically short international career before his death. It also shows the central role of MPSFind albums on this label Records in cementing the European Jazz idiom at the time, with a wide bridge between UK, Western and Eastern Europe, bringing musicians together to create and inspire each other. Of course producer / journalist and my Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist had a huge role in creating this scene in his capacity as producer for MPS Records and director of several German Jazz festivals.
Stylistically the music is a mixture of Jazz-Rock Fusion and Free Jazz, with highly expressive soloing by Sulzmann, Seifert and Kriegel and excellent support by the expanded rhythm section. Excellently recorded, as all MPS projects, this music lost nothing of its relevance over time and sounds absolutely fresh today.
Kriegel’s many fans will of course find his unique guitar playing style at its full exposure here, and his role as one of the central figures of European Jazz in the 1970s is also fully confirmed here.
Overall this is a definite “blast from the past”, which deserves to be heard, although it’s pretty tough to find a copy of this album today. Surely worth the effort of trying! This is a reissue of the fifth album by the legendary German guitarist / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist, originally released on the MPSFind albums on this label label in 1974 (it was Kriegel’s fourth album for the label). The album was recorded by a quartet called SpectrumFind albums by this artist, same as the title of Kriegel’s debut album for MPS, which also included keyboardist Rainer BruninghausFind albums by this artist, bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and drummer Joe NayFind albums by this artist, with percussionist Peter GigerFind albums by this artist appearing as a guest. The album presents six original compositions, five by Kriegel and one co-composed by the quartet members. This new remastered edition adds five bonus tracks recorded three years later (1977), all recorded live. One is a TV appearance and the rest are from a concert performance by the Mild Maniac OrchestraFind albums by this artist, Kriegel’s group active at that time.
The music is a superb example both of Kriegel’s unique genius as a player and composer and the European Jazz-Rock Fusion, which was developing rapidly at the time, on both sides of the Iron Curtain, with Germany as one of its focal points. Kriegel found ideal partners in this wonderful team of German musicians, although his ensembles over the years included often multinational collaborations.
The compositions are quite complex and multilayered, requiring very attentive listening in order to be fully appreciated. Kriegel switches between acoustic and electric guitars with ease and elegance, as expected from a true Master and his idiosyncratic stylistic is immediately recognizable to those familiar with his recordings. There is an aura of playfulness and mystique in this music, which makes it completely distinctive from everything that was being done at the time.
Kriegel’s tragically premature death in 2003 put an end to his wonderful career as musician and later author and illustrator, but his archives hold some incredible unreleased treasures, like the bonus material on this album (which was previously released on LP), which is being released on the MoosicusFind albums on this label label, which brings great joy of his many followers.
Overall this is a superb piece of music, which deserves to be remembered and is an immensely important document of the European Jazz-Rock Fusion legacy, which of course deserves an honorable place in any serious record collection. A must!

This album finds Naura in a transition period between his earlier days as one of the German Jazz scene pioneers, when he played mainly Bebop and Hard Bop, moving boldly into the Jazz-Rock Fusion idiom as one of its pioneering representatives in Europe. He plays electric piano on this album, which blends wonderfully with the vibraphone, creating a very unique ambience. Supported by a superb rhythm section of Weber and Nay the two soloists are able to weave long atmospheric melody lines and contemplative phrases. In retrospect this music sounds remarkably fresh and inviting and its legendary status is fully justified.
The cooperation between Naura and Schluter, which started in the 1950s, continued for several decades and produced some of the finest German Jazz music in many different settings. Their later recordings for ECMFind albums on this label are especially noteworthy, some of them in my favorite Jazz & Poetry setting. Schluter is just one of many extraordinary vibraphonists hailing from Germany, where this instrument seems to be more popular in the Jazz idiom than in any other European country.
It is the beautiful blend of four individual voices that creates the charming atmosphere, which in time made this album an icon of early European Fusion and the original vinyl album into a highly sought after collectors´ item. This is a reissue of a little known album by legendary American guitarist / composer Joe PassFind albums by this artist recorded in trio format with German bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and British drummer Kenny ClareFind albums by this artist. Together the trio plays ten tunes, one of which is an original composition by Pass, another one is an original composition by the studio´s recording director Willi FruthFind albums by this artist and the rest are standards. Recorded at the legendary MPS Studio in the Black Forest village of Villingen, this is probably the best sounding Pass album ever recorded.
This intimate trio format with the incredible support Pass receives from Weber enables him to concentrate on playing the melody and improvisations without the need for supportive chord work and as a result this is one of the most impressive albums he ever recorded. Combined with the brilliant sound quality this is guitar heaven from start to finish and fans of Jazz guitar playing (and I mean Jazz not Fusion) will find this album an absolute must have. It is my favorite Pass album, and I do know quite a few of his recordings.
This album demonstrates why best American Jazz musicians always wanted to record at the MPS Studio and release records on the MPSFind albums on this label label. The respect, recognition, love and total devotion they received in Europe was always infinitely more supportive than the usual treatment back home. The instrumental work is also a living proof of the level of European Jazz players at the time, which was not inferior to anything coming from across the pond.
This album is a great fun to listen to, even though decades passed since it was recorded. Fans of vocal Jazz and especially vocal ensembles which sung in perfect harmony as if they were created by a multi-mouthed being should have a field day with this music. I suppose there are not too many accordion Jazz fans around, but those few out there will find this to be an absolute must. This is a reissue of the 3rd solo album by American guitarist / pianist / composer Ralph TownerFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with European musicians: Norwegian saxophonist Jan GarbarekFind albums by this artist, German bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and Norwegian drummer Jon ChristensenFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight tracks, seven composed by Towner and one by Weber. The music was recorded at the legendary Arne BendiksenFind albums by this artist Studio in Oslo, often called the birthplace of ECMFind albums on this label, with Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist presiding behind the console. Kongshaug was the manager and chief sound engineer of the studio between 1967 and 1974, and he is the creator of the iconic “ECM sound” of the early ECM releases.
The music is absolutely magnificent, a sophisticated mixture of influences from different World Music traditions, Scandinavian melancholy and Jazz improvisation, exquisitely performed by these Master musicians. In parallel to his solo recordings, Towner was of course a member of the legendary OregonFind albums by this artist quartet, which created music somewhat similar to what can be heard here, but the European / Nordic influences are much stronger on this album, taking the music into another “orbit”.
Recorded in December of 1974 (50 years ago!), this music is light-years ahead of its time, and reflects the enormous influence that the early ECM albums had both on European and much later also on American Jazz. The incredible freedom the musicians were allowed to pursue, unrestricted by any commercial considerations, created an atmosphere of unlimited creativity, experimentation and milestone development of contemporary music, which lasted for a couple of decades, making a lasting impact, and which ripples can be felt even today.
Towner’s extensive recorded legacy, which spans well over fifty albums as leader and sideman, is a treasure trove of brilliant music and his integrity and immense talent never failed him over the years. I feel privileged for having the opportunity to meet him in person and even having him as a guest in my home.
Overall, this is an absolutely everlasting gem of an album, which stands as a beacon of the early ECM recordings, full of brilliant and touching music, counting every second of its duration. It should be a part of every decent album collection, reaching far beyond any genre classification – it is simply Godly music.

With three trumpeters on board the Big Band sound is even more potent than on the two earlier albums and the brass arrangements are more complex. The overall sound of this album is similar to the sound of the British Jazz ensembles, like NucleusFind albums by this artist or Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist ensembles. This live recording proves how the strong the ensemble was live and how masterfully they handled the complex arrangements and multi-part compositions.
Listeners familiar with the recordings by the individual members of the ensemble will often find them both familiar and innovative, as the mutual influence of the band members is very dominating. The ensemble manages to establish a unique sound and style, which will be recognizable as their own on their numerous future recordings.

The music is absolutely stunning and completely unusual for the Jazz-Rock Fusion genre. Due to the strong horn section it is conceptually closer to Brass Rock, but on the other hand it has a much more potent Jazz presence. All the members of the ensemble are superb instrumentalists with many years of experience and the level of the performances is phenomenal. Hiseman’s incredible steady drumming keeps the large ensemble precisely together, despite the devilishly complex rhythmic patterns. Thompson’s flute parts are simply insane, and this is one of the finest example of the couple’s work together.
Listeners familiar with the recordings by the individual members of the ensemble will often find them both familiar and innovative, as the mutual influence of the band members is very dominating. The ensemble manages to establish a unique sound and style, which will be recognizable as their own on their numerous future recordings.
Overall, this is a brilliant and highly unusual Fusion album, a true classic of the genre and great example of the sophistication of European Jazz. The entire recorded legacy of the ensemble is a must in any serious Jazz / Fusion record collection. According to his own words, spoken in an interview included in the liner notes of this album, this is probably the last album by the seminal German Jazz bassist / composer Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist. It is a companion to the "ResumeFind albums with this title" album released three years earlier and presents the same concept created from the same musical source – a series of bass solos played by Weber between 1990 and 2007 while he was a member of Jan GarbarekFind albums by this artist´s group, edited out of live recordings by the group made in many locations across Europe. This album includes thirteen such pieces, following the twelve pieces previously issued on "Resume".
Since his stroke in 2007 Weber is no longer an active performing musician and since his disability prevents him from playing the bass, he uses the edited bass solos as vehicles to "re-compose" them into new musical pieces, adding keyboard parts and inviting his old friend, Dutch trumpeter Ack van RooyenFind albums by this artist to add flugelhorn to some of these pieces, whose contributions turn out to be brilliant and fit the bill like a glove.
This album is not only a great musical achievement but also, and perhaps more importantly so, a symbolic triumph of mind over body. The fact that Weber is able to overcome the physical and mental obstacles and continues to be a creative human being is a tremendous lesson teaching us that disability and illness are just a minor hindrance for heroic artists.
The music is, as usual, a superb example of European approach to Jazz improvisation, with grace, elegance and sophistication play the first fiddle. Weber always was, like many of his German companions, a proud European, refusing to restrict his unlimited vision and artistic scope to rigid mainstream Jazz guidelines. He stated that fact repeatedly, and paid the price, as his music never really "made it" in the US, where he was often described as "a weirdo playing that no good Euro-jazz".
Of course time is often the best judge of values and this music is undoubtedly here to stay. Weber´s completely unique approach to the bass technique and particularly sound made a tremendous impact on many Jazz musicians around the world and his subtle aesthetics is always a source of first rate musical experiences. If this is indeed the last time we are able to hear new music created by this sublime artist, I can only hope that reality will prove everybody wrong…

This is a live solo bass album by the great German Jazz bassist / composer / bandleader Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist, one of the Godfathers of modern German Jazz. Recorded in 1994, the album was released only in 2021, and is so far the last Weber’s album on the ECMFind albums on this label label. The album presents seven tracks, six of which are original compositions by Weber and one is a standard. He plays electric upright bass and utilizes some electronic sound manipulation.
Weber’s collected recorded discography marks him as one of the most prolific and universal European Jazz bassists of all time. His unmistakable, highly melodic bass sound and sublime compositions are instantly recognizable and have been a source of joy for music lovers since the mid-1960s, when he shaped the modern German Jazz scene Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist, Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist and others. Later on he also became the bassist of choice for many American Jazz musicians and of course led his own ensembles for several decades. Solo bass albums are often ridiculed and considered as sign of vanity by the bassist who record them, which of course sometimes is justified, but in some extraordinary cases, like this one, they can be truly divine. Weber is not only a great virtuoso, but more importantly he is a superb songweaver, which turns off of his soli into fully melodic, complete compositions. This album exemplifies this phenomenon perfectly, and anybody listening to this music will not miss anything else to be present beyond Weber’s bass.
Overall, this is truly music from out of this world, harmony of the spheres, angel’s lament or whatever else that comes to one’s mind when hearing Weber touch his bass. The entire album, from start to finish, is an uninterrupted orgy of pleasure, as if he was playing directly on the strings of the listener’s soul. It is one of those unrepeatable moments, and thank God it was caught for eternity for us to enjoy! This is way beyond just recommendable, it is absolutely essential!

The album presents four tracks, all composed by Weber. The music was recorded at the Talent Studio in Oslo and engineered by Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist.
Weber is one of the most distinctive European Jazz voices and his inimitable bass sound and phrasing remains a classic expression of European lyricism and aesthetics, especially in the Chamber Jazz idiom, which combines Jazz and Classical music vocabulary and sonic aura.
The music develops slowly and builds up a feeling of tension and expectation, with Weber’s bass soloing on top, creating a unique atmosphere, often similar to cinematic music, somewhere between Minimalism and Romanticism. But it always remains uniquely Weber’s, recognizable easily from his idiosyncratic touch of the bass and the use of delay and reverb when amplifying the instrument.
Weber’s recording with his brilliant ColoursFind albums by this artist ensemble is the more Jazz oriented facet of his work, whereas his intimate albums, mostly in solo or duo format, are his Chamber Jazz creations. Of course, he is always brilliantly himself.
Overall, this is a wonderful piece of music and a true European Chamber Jazz gem, worth being listened to and returning to from time to time. Weber’s collective recorded legacy, both as a leader and sideman, is true chest of wonders, as this album clearly exemplifies.

By the mid-1970s West Germany became a true Mecca of European Jazz. The great economic resurgence allowed benevolent support of Arts by the German regional and Federal governments, and Jazz became a highly popular and flourishing Artform, bursting with concert activity all around the country. The many indoor and outdoor Jazz festivals, venues ranging from newly constructed concert halls to small clubs and cellars, music schools with Jazz departments and a vast number of thriving independent record labels, like MPSFind albums on this label, ECMFind albums on this label and EnjaFind albums on this label, to mention but a few, all these created a climate, which not only enabled the local musicians to flourish, but also acted like a magnet pulling Jazz musicians from all over the world to move to Germany and take part in the celebration of creating the new European Jazz miracle.
Since Europe was at the time literally split by the Iron Curtain into “West” and “East”, moving to Germany from the USA or other West European countries was a breeze. However, as far as East European Jazz musicians were concerned, such move was, more often than not, only but a dream. That did not mean, of course, that some of them would not try, and eventually also succeed to make such transition.
Born in Krakow in 1945, Polish Jazz saxophonist / flautist / composer / educator Leszek ZadloFind albums by this artist was one of the first Polish Jazz musicians, who managed to make the “West” their new home. He moved first to Austria, in 1966, where he polished his education and performing skills, playing constantly with the best local and visiting international Jazz players. There he recorded his debut album “Inner SilenceFind albums with this title” in 1973. In 1975 Zadlo relocated to Germany, settling in Munich and quickly becoming an integral part of the busy local scene.
This album presents a live recording by Zadlo with an international quartet, which includes American pianist Larry PorterFind albums by this artist, who was one of the many US musicians staying at the time in Germany, and a German rhythm section comprising of bassist Gunter LenzFind albums by this artist and drummer Joe NayFind albums by this artist. The concert was a part of the 1. New Jazz Festival, which took place in Hamburg in June of 1975. The festival’s concerts were presented at two legendary local venues: “Fabrik” and “Onkel Pös Carnegie Hall”, where the music on this album was recorded. The Festival’s lineup included several ensembles, led by important international Jazz artists, like Norwegian Terje RypdalFind albums by this artist, American Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist, German Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and… Polish Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist, another proud representative of the Eastern European Jazz scene. Parts of the performances by these artists were included on a commemorative album released by the Polydor label later that year. The fact that Leszek Zadlo was invited to take part in this important festival speaks volumes about his status as a part of the evolving European Jazz Avant-Garde.
The music is, as expected, a brilliant example of European Free Jazz / Improvised Music hurricane, exploding with emotions and sublime musicianship. Zadlo’s “infatuation” with the music of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist is obvious, but Zadlo offers his very own voice and interpretation of Freedom, which is perhaps less wild and instinctive, but rather more expressive and balanced, without losing touch with the world around. There is no doubt that Zadlo was at that period of his life perhaps the most “Coltrane oriented” European Jazz musician, all the way as total as the great Master, and with complete and full control of his faculties. Watching Zadlo on stage was like facing a Force of Nature, being totally and utterly swept by flow of his energy, all of which is wonderfully captured herein. His partners in crime are completely up to the task, as expected. It would be a sin to leave this music dormant in the vault and I am extremely happy to see it out in the open.
