BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH ~ BREMEN TO BRIDGWATER
CUNEIFORM 182/183 (Barcode: 045775018225) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1971 - 1975 Released: 2004

This albums collects three concerts recorded by the legendary British Jazz ensemble Brotherhood Of BreathFind albums by this artist, led by pianist / composer Chris McGregorFind albums by this artist. The first recording captures the ensemble in its early days (1971) whereas the other two come from four years later (1975), towards the end of the life cycle of the first edition of the band, which came to its end with the death of trumpeter Mongezi FezaFind albums by this artist just a month after the last of these concerts was recorded. The collective lineup (which changed slightly over time) includes: Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist, Marc CharigFind albums by this artist and Mongezi Feza – trumpet, Nick EvansFind albums by this artist, Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist and Radu MalfattiFind albums by this artist – trombone, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist, Dudu PukwanaFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, Elton DeanFind albums by this artist, Bruce GrantFind albums by this artist and Gary WindoFind albums by this artist – saxophone, Chris McGregor – piano, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist – bass and Louis MoholoFind albums by this artist and Keith BaileyFind albums by this artist– drums. It is interesting to compare the development of the ensemble over this relatively short time period and see how well integrated musically and spiritually the ensemble really was. Both the individual and collective improvisations are all breathtaking and the entire concert is an orgy of sound and musical creativity. A must to all British Jazz enthusiasts and definitely worth investigating for all open-minded music lovers.

BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH ~ TRAVELLING SOMEWHERE
CUNEIFORM 152 (Barcode: 045775015224) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2001

The saga of the British ensemble Brotherhood Of BreathFind albums by this artist and their leader pianist / composer Chris McGregorFind albums by this artist stretches back in time and space to South Africa in the early-1960s, where McGregor founded the first mixed-race Jazz group in the country, the Blue NotesFind albums by this artist. For the Apartheid regime mixed-race groups were hardly a welcome activity and the group suffered many hardships and found it difficult to perform for the white public. In 1964 the group got permission to travel to Europe and eventually arrived in London, where they decided to stay. The Blue Notes played around UK initially as a sextet (McGregor – piano, Dudu PukwanaFind albums by this artist – alto sax, Nick MoyakeFind albums by this artist – tenor sax, Mongezi FezaFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Johnny DyaniFind albums by this artist – bass and Louis MoholoFind albums by this artist – drums) and later as a quintet (after Moyake returned to SA). In spite of the fact that they were one of the most innovative and inspiring Jazz acts at the time, they never achieved proper recognition. The pioneering work of Jazz-World Fusion, with the emphasis on African music, which the group presented, was surely quite ahead of its time. By the early 1970s McGregor managed to form a large ensemble, combining the Blue Notes players with some of the most prominent British Jazz musicians of the time, which was called Brotherhood Of Breath. The resulting ensemble was surely one of the highlights of the British Jazz scene in the early to mid-1970s, offering an incredibly powerful stage act, which included a superb amalgam of modern Jazz, Free, Improvised Music and strong African music influence. The ensemble recorded but a few studio albums, but luckily many of their splendid concerts were recorded by radio stations and festivals, mostly around Europe, where they were always received warmly. This album documents a performance captured by the German Radio Bremen and is a superb example of what they were all about. The lineup (which changed slightly over time) includes: Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist, Marc CharigFind albums by this artist and Mongezi Feza – trumpet, Nick EvansFind albums by this artist and Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist – trombone, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist, Dudu Pukwana and Gary WindoFind albums by this artist – saxophone, Chris McGregor – piano, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist – bass and Louis Moholo – drums. A must to all British Jazz enthusiasts and definitely worth investigating for all open-minded music lovers.

TERRY DURHAM ~ CRYSTAL TELEPHONE
VOCALION 8401 (Barcode: 765387840129) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2005

Writer, poet and painter Terry DurhamFind albums by this artist recorded this one-off, strangely beautiful album for the DeramFind albums on this label label and disappeared from sight. The fact that a major record label released such unusual and unconventional production proves the incredible atmosphere of the late 1960s, before the record industry became completely ruthless and unsympathetic to innovation and musical progress.

The album includes a series of poems by Durham, which he recites (partly in spoken word and partly singing) on top of a magnificent musical background composed and orchestrated by John ColemanFind albums by this artist. The words and music fit one another perfectly and Durham’s poems stand the test of time beautifully. Although the full list of musicians participating in the recording is not given, a most notable, and again highly unusual appearance by Free Jazz saxophone giant Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist is one of the highlights of the album. Guitarist Alan ParkerFind albums by this artist also makes a notable appearance and the composer’s piano playing is featured as well.

Make no mistake – this is not a Jazz album at all. In fact it’s almost impossible to categorize at all, as it transcends genres and conventions at will. For the lack of a better solution I placed it under Progressive Rock, but it belongs probably more to a non-existent Poetry and Music sub-genre (as opposed to Jazz & Poetry which is a real sub-genre). Genres aside, this is a wonderful memento of a great time, which sounds today as good as it ever did. Wholeheartedly recommended to the adventurous listeners.

MICHEL GIBBS ORCHESTRA ~ BY THE WAY
AH UM 016 (Barcode: 5017771102029) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1993 Released: 1993

This is an album by British Jazz trombonist / composer / arranger / bandleader Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist and his Anglo-American Orchestra commemorating the orchestra´s 25th Anniversary. The members of the orchestra include many of the top British Jazz players, like trumpeter Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist, drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist and the young (at the time) saxophonist Julian ArguellesFind albums by this artist and guitarists Mike WalkerFind albums by this artist and John ParricelliFind albums by this artist. The Americans include saxophonist Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist, bassist Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist and drummer Bob MosesFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven original compositions, all by Gibbs, which span the entire 25 years period, some of which already appeared on earlier recordings and other that are performed here for the first time.

Gibbs´ followers will find this album consistent with his earlier recordings and with his unique orchestral approach and sound colors. Gibbs treats the orchestra like a palette and paints bright sound vistas with zest and vivid imagination. As usual the pieces allow for extensive soloing, which on this album reaches many remarkable peaks. Gibbs´ affinity to Rock is also evident, as is his tendency to feature the guitar as one of the main ingredients of the orchestra with plenty of soloing, which on this album is performed by Walker, who has a profound Bluesy feel and sensitivity.

Overall this is another superb album by a great Master of the orchestral Jazz idiom, who had very few parallels over the years and still dominates the scene today. This music lost nothing of its power or beauty over time and is a great document of the period, similar to the recently released album with the Gibbs Orchestra featuring John ScofieldFind albums by this artist from 1991 ("Symphony Hall, Birmingham 1991Find albums with this title").

This is one of the most obscure albums by Michael Gibbs, probably due to the fact that it was released by the short lived small independent British Ah UmFind albums on this label label, founded by musician / producer Nick PurnellFind albums by this artist, and has been available for many years. Wholeheartedly recommended and if you can dig it out somehow, don´t even think twice – grab it as it is worth its weight in gold!
Side Note
British composer / arranger Nick PurnellFind albums by this artist founded the short-lived Ah UmFind albums on this label label in 1989, which existed until 1993 and released a total of sixteen albums with some of the top British Jazz musicians of that period and a few American guests, which remain as of the finest recordings of that period. For some inexplicable reason all these albums are almost completely obsolete today, despite their excellent musical value, which is a shame, as they all deserve an honorable place in any decent British Jazz collection.

DAVE HOLLAND ~ UNCHARTED TERRITORIES
DARE2 010 (Barcode: 634457860728) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2017

This is a brilliant 2CD album by legendary British Jazz bassist / composer Dave HollandFind albums by this artist released on his own Dare2Find albums on this label label. He invited another British veteran, saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist and two much younger American Jazz players, pianist Craig TabornFind albums by this artist and drummer Ches SmithFind albums by this artist to take part in a spontaneous two-day recording session, which resulted in six hours or recorded music, of which twenty-three tracks appearing here were selected. Only three of the tracks were composed, two by Smith and one by Holland, and the rest are spontaneously improvised pieces.

As expected, the performances are all stellar, and contrary to the fears and reservations many people might hold against Free Jazz / Improvised Music, the result is completely audible and even likeable by most Jazz listeners, with just a bit of openness and slack / patience require to absorb this complex, but completely coherent music. Both the veterans and the “youngsters” display phenomenal improvising skills, mutual respect and telepathic communication with the other players, which is immediately apparent from the very first notes played.

As usual in these circumstances, the four musicians create all possible variations of solo, duo, trio and quartet involvement, which change constantly, and create streams of musical passages, that sound very melodic, even if no solid melody is actually present.

Overall, this is brilliant example of what Free Jazz / Improvised Music should sound like, which in reality happens extremely rarely. There is no one moment of cacophony or chaos on this album, in contrast to so many other albums in this genre, and as such it is truly exemplary and outstanding. Even if Improvising Music is not your cup of tea, do yourself a favor and try this one, which should be able to convince anybody of the true nature of the beast. Absolutely not to be missed!

JERZY MILIAN ~ NEUROIMPRESSIONS
GAD 050 (Barcode: 5901549197655) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970 - 1973 Released: 2016

This is the sixth installment of the archival series released by GADFind albums on this label Records, which presents the work of Polish Jazz vibraphonist / composer / bandleader Jerzy MilianFind albums by this artist. This chapter is dedicated to Milian´s recordings from the early 1970s, done with small ensembles in Hungary and East Germany (DDR), captured during three separate sessions, each producing three tracks. All nine tracks are original compositions by Milian.

The Hungarian session was recorded with a quartet led by trumpeter Rudolf TomsitsFind albums by this artist with included also pianist Gyorgy VukanFind albums by this artist, bassist Balazs BerkesFind albums by this artist and drummer Vilmos JavoriFind albums by this artist. Both East German sessions find Milian accompanied by the legendary saxophonist Ernst-Ludwig PetrowskyFind albums by this artist, bassist Klaus KochFind albums by this artist and drummer Willibald WinklerFind albums by this artist. Trumpeter Heinz BeckerFind albums by this artist participated on just one of these sessions.

The music is by far the most Avant-Garde of all Milian´s compositions presented on this series, and although obviously composed, it sounds like spontaneously Improvised Music most of the time. Both the Hungarian and the East German musicians were at the time representatives of the East European Free Jazz / Improvised Music scene, and their bold and adventurous attitude put them on the same level as their counterparts from across the Iron Wall. Petrowsky´s saxophone work does not differ much from what Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist played at the time in the UK or Willem BreukerFind albums by this artist played in Netherlands and so on.

From the historical perspective this album presents one more layer of Milian´s diversity and versatility, which is certainly much less known than his Big Band activity, which made him popular among listeners of less complex music. There is no doubt that Milian was able to take advantage of the opportunities the Eastern Block had to offer, in order to create some of the most audacious music made at the time anywhere on the planet.

As usual the original recordings are excellently remastered and the booklet offer informative bi-lingual background information about the music and the time it was created at. It is yet another must for all East European Jazz fans and collectors!

TONY OXLEY ~ FEBRUARY PAPERS
DISCUS 099 (Barcode: 5051078983028) ~ UK ~ Avant-Garde Jazz

Recorded: 1977 Released: 2020

This is a reissue, first time on CD, of an iconic album by British Jazz drummer / composer / bandleader Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven original compositions by Oxley, recorded by three lineups: a quartet with violinists Philipp WachsmannFind albums by this artist and David BourneFind albums by this artist and bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist (two tracks), a trio with Wachsmann and guitarist Ian BrightonFind albums by this artist (two tracks) and finally solo percussion and electronics (three tracks).

Oxley held a pivotal position in British Jazz since the mid 1960s, when he became the house drummer at Ronnie Scott´s club in London, which gave him an opportunity to play with the visiting prominent American Jazz stars and top British Jazz musicians. He was highly respected and always considered as truly extraordinary player, with his own perception of the role of drums within the Jazz idiom, but more importantly the concept of Jazz itself and its transformation into Improvised Music, which was developing at the time. Hearing Oxley performing live was for me always an extraordinary experience, regardless of the circumstances. Even within a most "straightforward" mainstream environment, his drumming was always on a different conceptual plane, although he managed to "keep time" perfectly and without a hitch.

Since the late 1960s Oxley started to be featured on a long series of revolutionary British Jazz albums recorded at the time, many of which remain as absolutely essential examples of modern British Jazz and serve as unsurpassed achievements of that boisterous creative period, like those recorded with Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, John SurmanFind albums by this artist, Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist and others.

His recording career as a leader started in 1969 with the release of two albums for CBSFind albums on this label: "The Baptised TravellerFind albums with this title" (1969) and "4 Compositions For SextetFind albums with this title" (1970), which in retrospect are considered as absolute gems of British Jazz discography. Those were followed by the album "IchnosFind albums with this title" (1971) released on RCAFind albums on this label. Following the disappointment with the major labels, which showed no interest in promoting these albums, Oxley joined guitarist Derek BaileyFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist as co-founder of the IncusFind albums on this label label, which was one of the first independent artist owned labels in Britain. He recorded two albums for the label: the eponymous "Tony OxleyFind albums with this title" (1975) and finally this, his fifth album as a leader "February PapersFind albums with this title" (1977).

The music on this album has nothing to do with Jazz in the conventional meaning of the idiom, but it is a perfectly logical continuation of the musical development that is documented on the four a.m. albums. Oxley breaks the conventional barriers and pushes the envelope towards Avant-Garde, which calls for new forms of expression not related to melody, harmony or even the usual sound expected from the instruments. Such extensive use of electronics was almost completely unheard of at the time of course and although early Improvised Music was already present on the scene, it was rarely as uncompromising and far-fetched as what Oxley decided to capture herein. Although bold spirited, the music offers a delicate, almost intimate sound and allows the listener to absorb every nuance of these performances.

The solo percussion / electronics pieces are of course the most surprising ones here. Improvised music is usually about group improvisation, but Oxley is one of the first improvisers to undertake the daring effort to freely improvise on his own, proving that such form of expression is both possible and valid.

Listening to this album today, with over four decades of perspective, enables me to extend my appreciation of this momentous historic effort from a new angle. Improvised Music is of course alive and kicking today and I am constantly exposed to a huge number of such recordings. I have to say that most of those contemporary efforts sound pretty pale in comparison to what Oxley managed to capture for posterity then. Despite the limited possibilities, surely compared to what is available today as far as electronic devices are concerned, his imagination and creativity remains unchallenged.

Kudos to Martin ArcherFind albums by this artist, the man behind DiscusFind albums on this label Records, for bringing this piece of musical history back to circulation – much appreciated! For Avant-Garde / Improvised Music enthusiasts, this is a Holy Grail!

PARKER / TRZASKA / EDWARDS / SANDERS ~ CITY FALL
FSR 2016/04 (Barcode: 5905279364097) ~ POLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2016

This is a live recording by a Free Jazz / Improvising Music quartet, which comprises of three British musicians: legendary saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist, bassist John EdwardsFind albums by this artist and drummer Mark SandersFind albums by this artist and Polish saxophonist / clarinetist Mikolaj TrzaskaFind albums by this artist. The quartet performs just three lengthy improvisations, the first of which resides on the first CD and the other two reside on the second CD of this 2CD set. All music is credited, as appropriate in such circumstances, to all four members of the quartet. The music was recorded during a concert in London´s Café OTO.

Anybody familiar with the British Free Jazz scene will recognize the names of the British musicians as top representative of the genre and the same applies of course of people familiar with the parallel Polish scene, where Trzaska is considered as a unique phenomenon not only as Free Jazz player / leader but also as one of the most important contemporary composers of cinematic music.

The music captured on this album testifies as to the immediate rapport between the players, especially so between Evans (born 1944) and Trzaska (born 1966), who keep exchanging licks, phrases and vast amounts of energy between them for the entire duration of the concert, which often sounds superhuman in its intensity. The age difference seems to be completely inconsequential, which of course does not surprise me at all as my pairing of Trzaska with the Israeli clarinetist Harold RubinFind albums by this artist (born 1932) was similarly successful. In fact the saxophone duets, performed without the rhythm section, are some of the most fascinating moments on this album and I´d love to hear more of those.

As far as live albums of Free Jazz / Improvised Music are concerned, my opinion usually is that the music was primarily intended for those people who attended the concert and in recorded form the music loses most of its authenticity, energy and spirit, and becomes significantly less relevant. This album is one of the relatively few exceptions, probably due to the class of the musicians involved and the comradeship between them, and as a result hearing the music in recorded form is still very emotionally involving and aesthetically pleasing.

Of course this music is strictly for connoisseurs of this specific idiom and people who seek entertainment in their musical escapades should avoid this music at all cost. Those brave hearted few who enjoy the organized madness should have a most wonderful time while this music lasts, especially since meetings like these are usually a one time only events. Strong stuff!

EVAN PARKER / RGG ~ LIVE @ ALCHEMIA
FSR 2017/01 (Barcode: 5905279364172) ~ POLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017

This is a live recording by the legendary British saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist performing together with one of the top Polish Jazz trios RGGFind albums by this artist, which comprises of pianist Lukasz OjdanaFind albums by this artist, bassist Maciej GarbowskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Krzysztof GradziukFind albums by this artist. Together the ad hoc quartet performs four spontaneously composed pieces, credited to all four members of the quartet. The music was recorded at the celebrated Krakow´s Alchemia club, which since many years is associated with the Polish and international Improvised Music scene.

The courageous experiment of combining forces between Parker and RGG seems, at least in theory, quite unexpected to say the least. Based on their recording history one might contemplate how the music of Parker, which always symbolized the extreme Avant-Garde and total freedom of expression, might be combined with the music of RGG, which although featured some elements of freedom, was always strongly melody based and full of typical Polish lyricism and Romanticism. Apparently, music is able to unite most stylistic gaps and in this particular case simply emerges victorious. As a result we have some of the most "melodic" and relaxed Parker performances ever put on record and the most free oriented music ever recorded by RGG, both wholly amalgamated into a new form of expression.

In spite of the age difference between Parker and the RGG members, there seems to be a complete and profound understanding and mutual respect between the musicians, which allows the music to flow and flourish uninhibited and overwhelmingly moving. As usual in such musical circumstances, the music requires attentive and open-minded listening, but its quality assures a most wonderful aesthetic experience. The personal performances are all, as expected, exhilarating and the challenge of playing with a legend mobilized the RGG members to give absolutely everything they had to give that night.

There is no doubt that this is one of the most challenging and daring Polish Jazz recording lately and a superb way to start 2017, which promises to be as exciting as the incredibly intense 2016. Maciej KarlowskiFind albums by this artist deserves kudos for putting this experiment together and turning his FSRFind albums on this label label into an important player on the Polish record scene. Thanks also to the man with the biggest ears in Poland, Jan SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist, for the wonderful mix and mastering, which result in a superb sound quality this album offers to the listener. Well done!

RGG / LYYTINEN / BLASER ~ CITY OF GARDENS VOL. 2
VOICE MUSIC 1011 (Barcode: 5906489287527) ~ POLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2021 Released: 2024

This is an album by Polish Jazz trio RGGFind albums by this artist (pianist Lukasz OjdanaFind albums by this artist, bassist Maciej GarbowskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Krzysztof GradziukFind albums by this artist), joined by Finnish saxophonist Pauli LyytinenFind albums by this artist and Swiss trombonist Samuel BlaserFind albums by this artist. The “Vol. 2” refers to the album recorded by a similar quintet, but with Finnish trumpeter Verneri PohjolaFind albums by this artist instead of Lyytinen, released in 2018. The album presents seven tracks, five of which are improvised by the quintet and two are composed by Garbowski. The album offers a stunning sound quality.

The music reflects the steady shift of RGG towards Improvised Music, which happened gradually during the twenty plus years of their music making together, and is, in retrospect, one of the most fascinating musical journeys on the Polish Jazz scene. All three members of the trio are brilliant instrumentalists, capable of producing a mesmerizing flow of music, which never loses its coherence and melodic footing, even when it journeys into the Free Improvisation sphere, all of which is wonderfully documented on their impressive recorded legacy, carefully assembled over the last two decades.

Another aspect of RGG’s musical journey is the openness towards other musicians from all over the world, which also yielded superb recordings, like the a.m. earlier “City Of GardensFind albums with this title” album or their cooperation with British improvisers, like Trevor WattsFind albums by this artist or Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist. The open-mindedness and empathy required in such circumstances is superbly documented on this album as well, which is a beautiful example of spontaneity and telepathic musical bonding at their best.

Overall, this is a deeply moving, elegant and truly inspiring example of Improvised Music at its best, full of elegance and eloquence, coherency and aesthetics, which makes listening to music such a pleasure. An absolute gem!

RGG / POHJOLA / BLASER ~ CITY OF GARDENS
FSR 2018/08 (Barcode: 5905279364318) ~ POLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2018

This is a live recording by Polish Jazz trio RGGFind albums by this artist (pianist Lukasz OjdanaFind albums by this artist, bassist Maciej GarbowskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Krzysztof GradziukFind albums by this artist), expanded to a European quintet with the addition of the Finnish trumpeter Verneri PohjolaFind albums by this artist and Swiss trombonist Samuel BlaserFind albums by this artist. The music was recorded during the quintet´s concert at the XII Silesian Jazz Festival in Katowice, with yours truly present in the audience and therefore also, at least spiritually, a part of this recording. The album presents five original compositions, all by Garbowski.

Although the Polish Jazz scene always had an abundance of excellent Jazz piano trios, RGG certainly deserve a special mention in every respect. Their quest for musical perfection and constant searching, their openness and uncompromising aesthetics, their ability to survive the change of the pianist and continue safe and sound in a natural progression and above all their personal charm are all truly unique. I have of course followed the trio´s development from day one, collectively and individually, and consider them to be a quintessential paradigm of the young post-Millennium Polish Jazz scene.

The trio´s previous live recording, which placed them alongside the veteran British avant-gardist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist and their recordings with Polish vocalist Anna GadtFind albums by this artist opened another chapter in their approach to music, namely their hunger to develop collaborations with musicians from outside the trio´s closed habitat. This led also to work first with Pohjola and then also Blaser, which we are able to hear on this album.

Although credited to Gradziuk, the music is of course mostly improvised and the lengthy, between ten and fifteen minutes long tracks, are an orgy of controlled spontaneity and free fall, which is completely captivating. The quintet goes through all the possible iterations, with musicians playing solo or in duo, trio, quartet and quintet settings, all impulsively forming on the stage. But with all that openness and freedom, which can be heard throughout, there is also a magic coherency and discipline, which sets boundaries and defines the scope and form of the music at any given point. This miraculous ability to play free and at the same time show a clear direction is the most important ingredient, which makes this music what it is.

The individual statements are all phenomenal, which is hardly a surprise. Pohjola is definitely stealing a lot of the attention, as his trumpet pyrotechnics are breathtaking, but at the same time his playing is incredibly melodic, lyrical and often purely romantic. Blaser, already a young veteran of the trombone scene, has an incredible technique and no lesser feel, and the sound he is able to produce with his instrument is a ceaseless box of wanders. RGG – oh well they are the locomotive which carries this music along, a stylish carriage full of chic and aesthetic beauty and a red Lamborghini which adds zest and gusto.

This is definitely some of the best Jazz music one can listen to these days, and I wish it gets to as many people as possible, as it is unconditionally superb. I am happy to be friends with these guys and proud of their achievements – they are the kind of people that do not let you down – and that is so rare. Thanks for the music!

RGG / TREVOR WATTS ~ RAFA
FSR 2018/13 (Barcode: 5905279364363) ~ POLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2018 Released: 2018

Following the live album recorded with legendary British Jazz saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist in 2016, Polish Jazz trio RGGFind albums by this artist – pianist Lukasz OjdanaFind albums by this artist, bassist Maciej GarbowskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Krzysztof GradziukFind albums by this artist – return this time in the company of another British Jazz Colossus, saxophonist Trevor WattsFind albums by this artist, in a similar setting of live recording, performing spontaneously created Improvised Music. The album presents five pieces, obviously credited to all four musicians, lasting on average about fourteen minutes each. The music was superbly recorded and offers an astounding sound quality.

The music is an epitome of everything Improvised Music stands for; sublime interplay between the participants, breathtaking individual expressions, virtuosic instrumental displays and mesmerizing coherence, which together engulf the listener from the very first dramatic cry of the saxophone to the very last overtone seventy minutes later; an orgy of sounds and feelings which is every bit as merciless as it is strikingly uplifting.

RGG and Watts sound as if they have been playing together since the beginning of Time and rehearsing this material since forever, which of course happens only to the absolute best among musicians. Both parties are known for their openness and absolute disregard of boundaries, which is obvious herein, resulting in total acceptance of each other on one hand and profound mutual respect on the other. The level of togetherness and telepathic conversation is astounding and the resulting music is a group statement every inch of the way.

For Improvised Music cognoscenti, the music on this album is a classic example of European approach towards improvisation; based on balance between freedom and discipline, intellect and emotion, harmonic progression and rhythmic fluidity. Watts, one of the iconic figures of the British Jazz emancipation and pioneer of exploration of the Jazz idiom way beyond its mainstream origins, which he faithfully continues since the 1960s, feels completely at ease with his much younger cohorts, who represent the East European Jazz school characterized by its lyricism and intrinsic melancholy, and manages to combine his typical Britishness with the Slavic approach embodied in RGG´s statements. This aesthetic European Unity (Brexit aside) is a phenomenon that is unique to European Jazz, and sets it completely apart from whatever is happening across the pond.

I have been blessed and lucky to follow closely the careers of Watts and RGG since their onset and hearing them performing together is nothing short of bliss for me personally, but I am also convinced that every refined and experienced Jazz and Improvised Music connoisseur will find this music absolutely wonderful in every respect. This is definitely one of the best live albums that arrived on my desk in 2018, and I am profoundly grateful to its creators.

Following the release of three Drum & Bass albums in the 1990s, the duo switched their musical direction and with the turn of the Millennium released a series of recordings made with international group of Free Jazz / Avant-Garde musicians, like those appearing on this album: British saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist, trombonist Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and bassists John EdwardsFind albums by this artist and George TrebarFind albums by this artist, American pianist Matthew ShippFind albums by this artist, Dutch drummer Han BenninkFind albums by this artist and others. The album presents eight original compositions co-composed by the participating musicians.

The music is as experimental and weird as one might expect from the above lineup, which of course is something some of us love dearly ;) Long improvisations and intimate conversations between these wonderful musicians are always worth listening to and honestly the electronic music elements by the duo are not really significant here, more like background and general ornamentation.

The music is very serene and held back, offering a multitude of wonderful soli, in particular those by Evans and Wheeler, which are nothing short of spectacular. The musicians form duos, trios, quartets and a constantly changing lineup, which offers not one dull moment for the duration. The overall atmosphere of freedom and lack of boundaries contributes greatly to the creative powers of the participants and the result is really surprising.

For British Free Jazz / Improvised Music enthusiasts this album, which they are most probably nor aware of its existence, is a treasure chest of great discoveries and something definitely worth checking out, well deserving a place in their record collections. Apparently this album is still available, so grab a copy as long as those last.

Overall this is a little known gem, which is definitely a great surprise!

JOHN STEVENS ~ AT THE PLOUGH `79
FMR 215 (Barcode: 649849982766) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1979 Released: 2007

British drummer John StevensFind albums by this artist was one of the great heroes of the local scene and a great pioneer of the European Free Jazz / Improvised Music. Together with such distinguished British improvisers as Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist, Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist, Trevor WattsFind albums by this artist, Derek BaileyFind albums by this artist and Barry GuyFind albums by this artist, Stevens laid the foundations of the modern British Jazz revolution in the mid 1960s, when he started his Spontaneous Music EnsembleFind albums by this artist (SME), which he led for many years. SME recorded extensively through the 1970s, when the Improvised Music movement was at its peak. Later on he also recorded with many other European improvising musicians from the continent and continued to record for small independent labels. Stevens died in 1994 (at the age of 54) and left an immense legacy of recorded music, as well as a crucial contribution to the development of the Jazz Art Form. This live recording at the legendary London pub “The Plough”, which served as the meeting place of the Improvised Music scene in the 1970s, captures the John Stevens Trio with saxophone giant Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist and superb young (at the time) bassist Paul RogersFind albums by this artist. The set was recorded on a portable tape machine, which means that the sound quality is limited, but it does not affect the intensity and the brilliance of the music. The trio performs three Osborne originals and three interpretations of Jazz standards, which of course get quite a work-over. All three musicians are simply brilliant and the fans of this music should be grateful it was preserved for posterity, especially in view of the rather limited availability of live material by Osborne. Great to have this lost treasure rediscovered and available for all of us to enjoy. A gem!

STAN TRACEY / EVAN PARKER ~ CREVULATIONS
PSI 05.04 (Barcode: 5030243050420) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2004 Released: 2005

This is a live album by the duo of British Improvising Music Giants, pianist Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist. The album presents four tracks, all extended improvisations credited by default to both musicians.

The music is surprisingly well behaved and relatively serene, which is rather unusual for the Avant-Garde milieu, and as such sounds less outlandish and startling to a less experienced listener, who might come across it by chance. The music’s progression is coherent and often even somewhat melodic, and for Improvising Music connoisseurs absolutely thrilling, displaying a superb telepathic cooperation between the two musicians, in the spirit of the “Art of the Duo” idiom.

As an avid follower of Tracey’s recordings, I have always admired his incredible diversity, flexibility and out of the box approach to music. It is almost incomprehensible that the same musicians can play a highly melodic, swinging, almost mainstream (but never quite mainstream) music and at the same time take part in the British Avant-Garde scene, alongside musicians like Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist or John SurmanFind albums by this artist, all with the same enthusiasm, dedication and most surprisingly perfect accomplishment. This makes Stan Tracey probably the most unique and universal British Jazz Giant, who was always able to create aesthetics rather than try to copy it. This album is a natural companion to another duo album the duo recorded a year earlier, called “Suspensions And AnticipationsFind albums with this title”.

For people familiar with Evan Parker’s music, this album might be as well quite surprising, as he sounds here beautifully melodic, even romantic at times, completely devoid of his usual rather angry / almost aggressive attitude, not to mention some of his most accomplished saxophone performances ever. Overall, this is a brilliant Improvised Music album, awe-inspiring by its ingenuity and beauty, and one of the few albums in that genre, that can be listened to repeatedly over time, always discovering new layers of Artistry. Jazz lovers, who might be nervous about Improvised Music, will be well advised to give this amazing album a try.

KENNY WHEELER ~ AROUND 6
ECM 1156 (Barcode: 731452912428) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1979 Released: 1990

This is the third album on the ECMFind albums on this label label by the great British (born in Canada) trumpeter / composer Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, one of the Godfathers of modern British and European Jazz. Recorded in a sextet setting, the album combines the forces of several superb European musicians: British saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist, Swedish trombonist Eje ThelinFind albums by this artist, US (resident in Europe) vibraphonist Tom van der GeldFind albums by this artist, French bassist Jean-Francois Jenny-ClarkFind albums by this artist and Finnish drummer Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist. The sextet performs six original compositions by Wheeler, two of which are expanded pieces over ten minutes long and one is a solo trumpet piece.

In many respects this album is quite different from all other recordings Wheeler made for ECM, mostly due to the presence of Parker, who belongs to the radical Free Jazz circle, which almost never (except for the very early days) manages to get any exposure on the label. Wheeler, however, seems to have absolutely no problem with Parker being a part of the lineup and switches elegantly between the melodic / lyrical compositions or passages within a composition, into the wild free realms Parker resides in. There are very few recordings, which manage to create such a wonderful cross-genre symbiosis like this one, and therefore this album is in retrospect one of the most interesting ECM recordings.

All the players here have been major figures on the European Jazz scene since many years and participated in countless recording sessions from the mid 1960s all throughout the 1970s and Wheeler´s capability to bring them together as part of this project is truly admirable. The level of performance is absolutely dazzling and combined with the level of freedom the musicians are granted by the leader they are able to express themselves to the max, which is clearly evident to the listener.

This music lost absolutely nothing of its power and beauty over time, on the contrary listening to this album only makes one wonder why such ambitious and groundbreaking music is rarely being recorded today. This is an absolute gem and every record collection will be greatly enriched by having this album as one of its items. Grab it if you can find it!

ROBERT WYATT ~ SHLEEP
DOMINO 45 (Barcode: 5034202204428) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene

Recorded: 1996 - 1997 Released: 2008

7th album by Robert WyattFind albums by this artist, which follows up the previous release in the path of returning to more conventional music making and musical cooperation with other musicians, mostly from the Avant-Garde and jazz circles, like guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist, guitarist Paul WellerFind albums by this artist and others. Also the co-writing partnership with his wife Alfreda BengeFind albums by this artist, who contributes her poetic lyrics to Wyatt´s songs, seems to thrive, creating less radical political statements and more abstract vistas. The music is again (as in the early days of his career) a mixture of Jazz and Prog, which is something Wyatt´s fans are most comfortable with. Much more melodic, even if still melancholic at times, this is Wyatt´s greatest musical work in his second life – music phase. The six years his fans had to wait for this album were definitely worth waiting for, with a gentler (although still strongly outspoken) Wyatt delivering what he does best – personal, straight form the heart musical gems. A triumphant return to splendid form and a minor masterpiece!
