GEORGE ADAMS ~ THE COMPLETE REMASTERED RECORDINGS ON BLACK SAINT & SOUL NOTE
CAM JAZZ 1018 (Barcode: 8052405140616) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1979 - 1983 Released: 2012

This superb Box Set collects all the albums recorded by the legendary American flautist / saxophonist / composer George AdamsFind albums by this artist on the twin Italian independent labels: Black SaintFind albums on this label and Soul NoteFind albums on this label. The set includes five albums, three of which were recorded with the quartet he co-led with pianist Don PullenFind albums by this artist and which also included bassist Cameron BrownFind albums by this artist and drummer Dannie RichmondFind albums by this artist, and the other two were recorded with a quintet co-led with drummer Dannie Richmond and which also included trombonist Jimmy KnepperFind albums by this artist, pianist Hugh LawsonFind albums by this artist and bassist Mike RichmondFind albums by this artist.

Adams is best known as a member of the Charles MingusFind albums by this artist ensembles or bands led by Gil EvansFind albums by this artist and Roy HaynesFind albums by this artist and later as a co-leader of the quartet with pianist Don Pullen. His musical interests covered a very wide range of sub-genres, from Rhythm And Blues to Free Jazz and he felt quite comfortable playing in any of them, often on the same album. His passionate performances and his occasional vocal escapades made him one of the most colorful and loved Jazz performers in the 1980s. His premature death at the age of 52 robbed the American Jazz scene of one of its most original personalities. In the late 1980s Adams was a member of the short-lived quartet called PhalanxFind albums by this artist, which also included guitarist James Blood UlmerFind albums by this artist, one of the most adventurous ensembles of that period.

Remastered, mini-sleeved, and with a great bargain price – this Box Set an absolute must for any serious Jazz collector.
Side Note
The Italian independent record label Black SaintFind albums on this label was founded by the music critic / author / producer Giacomo PellicciottiFind albums by this artist in 1975. It was taken over by the producer Giovanni BonandriniFind albums by this artist in 1978 and a year later (1979) a sister label, called Soul NoteFind albums on this label, was established. The twin labels were run by Giovanni and later his son Flavio BonandriniFind albums by this artist, until they were sold in 2008 to the Italian KEPACH Music Group, which already owned the CAM JazzFind albums on this label label, and which also bought another Italian independent record label Dischi Della QuerciaFind albums on this label.

The mission of the Black Saint / Soul Note labels was to record and document the Free Jazz / Improvised Music / Avant-Garde scene, mostly from the US but also from Europe, which continued between mid 1970s and late 1990s and produced a staggering collection of almost 550 albums recorded by world's most important Jazz innovators active at the time, providing an opportunity to American (mostly Afro-American) musicians, who would have never managed to make these recordings at home, ridden by racism, alienation and closed-mindedness. Without these two labels most of this fantastic human creativity would have been never documented.

However, the Black Saint / Soul Note Box Sets produced under the CAM JazzFind albums on this label moniker are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour. Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases has been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard to the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires us to treat our cultural legacy with respect and loyalty.

These Box Sets have no booklet which presents researched historical background and exact discographical information of the albums included, and most importantly an overview of the music and its meaning and contribution to the Jazz Art form. Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, the information is in most cases too small to be readable at all. In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap!

NEIL ARDLEY ~ A SYMPHONY OF AMARANTHS
DUSK FIRE 107 (Barcode: 5065001032189) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2012

This is the criminally overdue reissue of the second album by British Jazz composer / arranger / bandleader Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist, which also was the second part of his great trilogy, which started with "The Greek VariationsFind albums with this title" and was followed later by "Kaleidoscope Of RainbowsFind albums with this title". It is one of the great gems of the revolutionary British Jazz, which developed in the Golden Decade (1965-1975) and changed to face of music as we know it.

Influenced by Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist and Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, Ardley was the creator of the innovative Big Band / Orchestral sound, which was one of the magic ingredients of the new British Jazz at the time. Although based on the compositional ideas of Ellington and Evans, Ardley managed to push them way forward into an amalgam with contemporary European Classical music, early atmospheric / ambient music and other elements, creating unique orchestral soundscapes. As the musical director, resident arranger and conductor of the New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. NJOFind albums by this artist), Ardley had at his disposal the crème de la crème of the British Jazz players, and quite naturally he used them to record his own projects as well.

The list of the protagonists behind this recording is of truly epic proportions and includes such luminaries as trumpeters Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist and Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist, trombonist Derek WadsworthFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist, Don RendellFind albums by this artist, Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist and Dave GellyFind albums by this artist (who also wrote the informative liner notes for this reissue), pianists Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist and Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist, bassist Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist and Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist, drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. The only one of its kind Ivor CutlerFind albums by this artist recites a famous nonsense poem and the divine Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist sings Ardley´s music accompanying three classic poems, his first adventure with vocal music.

Overall the album presents a wondrous splendor of musical ideas, marvelously executed by the musicians involved, creating together one of the most beautiful examples of creativity and intelligence, which were the chief ingredients of the music created by Ardley time and again. As an album, this is one of the very few examples of musical perfection, which set the standards for all the others. It is in every respect as perfect today as it was at the time of its recording.

A curious point about this album is the fact that this was the first ever recording to be funded by a grant from the Art Council, which supported a plentitude of great musical projects in the years to come. The album was produced by the legendary Denis Preston, who was in charge of recording a myriad of brilliant early British Jazz albums and without whom the this great music might have never been captured for posterity. The reissue is brilliantly remastered and sounds absolutely spectacular.

This is an unconditional, absolute essential piece of music!

NEIL ARDLEY ~ KALEIDOSCOPE OF RAINBOWS
DUSK FIRE 101 (Barcode: 5060051330889) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1976 Released: 2005

Composer / arranger / bandleader Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist left a remarkable mark on modern British Jazz in the 1960s and 1970s. As the musical director of the New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. NJOFind albums by this artist), Ardley was responsible for creation of the innovative Big Band / Orchestra sound, one of the great ingredients of modern British Jazz. Influenced by Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, another pioneering figure of Jazz orchestration, Ardley took the matters further, adopting rock elements into his scores and creating unique Jazz-Rock Orchestral music. His skills as a composer of large-scale suite-like scores were best documented by a series of recordings of his works.

This album was a third in a series of such works and a final part of an orchestral trilogy, which started with "The Greek VariationsFind albums with this title" and continued with "A Symphony Of AmaranthsFind albums with this title". As usual in his case, the music is a multi-part orchestral suite, performed by a Jazz ensemble with plenty of space for extended improvisations by soloist. Having at his disposal the burgeoning British Jazz community of musicians, Ardley selected the excellent Ian CarrFind albums by this artist’s NucleusFind albums by this artist as the core of this ensemble, expanding it with additional musicians he was used to work with. The list of players is most impressive and includes among others: Ian Carr on trumpet, Brian SmithFind albums by this artist, Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist and Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist on saxophone, Tony CoeFind albums by this artist on clarinet, Dave MacRaeFind albums by this artist and Geoff CastleFind albums by this artist on piano, Roger SuttonFind albums by this artist on bass and Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist on drums and vibraphone.

The music moves between atmospheric soundscapes and highly rhythmic Jazz-Rock pieces, with excellent solos in each of the suite’s seven parts. In retrospect the music lost none of its original charm and beauty, and sadly one must admit: “they don’t make music like that any more”. Ardley was to produce one more orchestral masterpiece, called "Harmony Of The SpheresFind albums with this title", by the end of the 1970s, before the changing musical and economic climate eradicated ambitious / artistic music almost completely. He became a very successful writer and best-selling author before he died in 2004.

I hope all of his splendid musical works will be properly reissued, including previously unreleased stuff left in his estate. As for this album, just grab a copy and take the A(rdley) train into musical lands of rare beauty – an experience you’ll never forget.

CUP OF TIME ~ MODERN TANGOS
REQUIEM / LYDIAN 2020/15 (Barcode: 5906874951354) ~ POLAND ~ Classical

Recorded: 2020 Released: 2020

This is an album by Polish quartet Cup Of TimeFind albums by this artist, comprising of four classically trained musicians: flautist Ryszard BorowskiFind albums by this artist, violinist Agnieszka CyprykFind albums by this artist, accordionist Rafal GrzakaFind albums by this artist and cellist Krzysztof LenczowskiFind albums by this artist. This time the quartet picked the Tango as the theme of their album, and presents lesser known facets of the passionate Argentinean dance, mostly taken from Classical music, composed by the Czech / Jewish composer Erwin SchulhoffFind albums by this artist, who died in a Nazi concentration camp, French composer Charles-Camille Saint-SaensFind albums by this artist, Russian composer Igor StravinskyFind albums by this artist, Czech composer Bohuslav MartinuFind albums by this artist and Argentinean composer Alberto GinasteraFind albums by this artist. In addition, one piece composed by the American Jazz pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Gil EvansFind albums by this artist and another one composed by Borowski are also included.

Many Tango lovers will be obviously surprised by these glimpses of their favorite music appearing in such broad spectrum of chameleonic exposures, often very different to what is usually taken for granted when Tango comes to mind. And since broadening one’s horizons is always something people should strive to do, listening to this album can be quite educational, as well as enjoyable.

Of course the music is highly professionally performed, and offers a broad spectrum of modern Classical Music, which is relatively little known to most listeners.

Although I find the albums by Cup Of Time a bit of a hit-and-miss sometime, this one is definitely worth exploring and offers many nice surprises, and as such welcome and recommended!

MILES DAVIS ~ AT CARNEGIE HALL: THE COMPLETE CONCERT
COLUMBIA 65027 (Barcode: 5099706502722) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1961 Released: 1998

It’s good to see that record companies sometimes are able to get a grip and correct the mistakes of the past. ColumbiaFind albums on this label has certainly tried its best to do justice to the magnificent recorded legacy of Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and this album is a part of that effort. This album assembles the complete Miles Davis Quintet / Gil EvansFind albums by this artist Orchestra concert recorded on May 19, 1961 at the Carnegie Hall, putting everything at the original recording order without editing or dubbed applause (the music included here was previously available on two separate albums: Miles Davis At Carnegie HallFind albums with this title and More Music From The Legendary Carnegie Hall ConcertFind albums with this title). This album is of course a perfect companion to the sublime Columbia 6 CDs Box Set The Complete Columbia Studio RecordingsFind albums with this title, especially as the concert was the first time Miles performed with the Gil Evans Orchestra live. 1961 marked an extremely busy and productive year for Miles. Following the departure of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist and Bill EvansFind albums by this artist, the “first” legendary Miles Davis Quintet was history and Miles quickly organized a new Quintet, which was to be his vehicle for an interim period of about two years, until the “second” legendary Quintet was to rise like a phoenix and take Jazz places never dreamt about. The “interim” Quintet included excellent and experienced players: Hank MobleyFind albums by this artist – saxophone, Wynton KellyFind albums by this artist – piano, Paul ChambersFind albums by this artist – bass and Jimmy CobbFind albums by this artist – drums (the last two were remaining members from the “first” Quintet). These players followed their leader with skill and devotion, creating some of the best modern jazz on record. Just one month before this concert the Quintet recorded a magnificent live album In PersonFind albums with this title (which is now available as a 4 CDs Box Set In Person Friday And Saturday Nights At The Blackhawk, CompleteFind albums with this title). The studio album Someday My Prince Will ComeFind albums with this title was recorded just a couple of months before the Carnegie concert recording. The next (and last) studio recording with Gil Evans (Quiet NightsFind albums with this title) was just months ahead. Looking back at this period it becomes plainly evident that Miles was already “miles ahead” in his mind, looking for a new vehicle and a new direction, which would commence shortly with the formation of the new Quintet and the groundbreaking new album ahead (Seven Steps To HeavenFind albums with this title). That of course makes this music no less magnificent, as Miles was destined to be “in transition” for the duration of his entire career. It remains here, recorded for posterity, for us mortals to enjoy (almost 46 years later), loosing absolutely nothing of its relevance and eternal beauty. Miles of course was one of the very few artists, who made a statement with every note they played. As such, these notes are a source of inspiration and joy for those who love this music. Essential!

MILES DAVIS ~ MERCI MILES! – LIVE AT VIENNE
WARNER 603497844616 (Barcode: 603497844616) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Funk Fusion

Recorded: 1991 Released: 2021

This is an archival album by the legendary American Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, recorded with his last sextet featuring saxophonist Kenny GarrettFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Deron JohnsonFind albums by this artist, lead bassist FoleyFind albums by this artist, bassist Richard PatersonFind albums by this artist and drummer Ricky WellmanFind albums by this artist. The 2CD album presents eight tracks, with only one track co-composed by Davis, two tracks composed by Marcus MillerFind albums by this artist, two others by PrinceFind albums by this artist and the remaining three by other composers. The last track features the band only without Davis. The sound quality is somewhat murky and boomy, but excusable.

The music was recorded on July 1, 1991 during the last Davis’ European tour and just over two months before his untimely death. A week later (July 8) Davis performed the legendary concert with the orchestra led by Quincy JonesFind albums by this artist, which revisited his recordings with Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, and which was released on record as “Miles & Quincy Live At MontreuxFind albums with this title”, which makes it the one before last live recording by Davis. The music remained unreleased for thirty years!

Regardless of the heated discussion if Miles was still playing Jazz at this stage of his career, which IMHO in completely ridiculous, the music was alive and kicking and the individual performances scorching, especially those by Davis himself, who plays relatively lengthy soli herein, in contrast to many other live performances, many of which I was lucky to witness, where he contributed limited solo parts. The team of much younger musicians, a trick of the trade Davis used throughout his entire career, revitalized the music and the energy and vigor present here is undeniably stunning, especially at the crescendo moments. But as usual, the intimate, quiet trumpet solo parts, where the band is only audible in the far background, are the absolute pinnacles as far as I am concerned.

Overall, this is another document of the timeless career of Jazz Giant Miles Davis, which captures some of his last moments on stage. Perhaps it does not present anything previously unheard, but it certainly is a faithful reflection of his Art and for Davis’ completists, as well as for those of his fans, who enjoyed his most Funky, Groovy moments, this is an absolute must!

MILES DAVIS ~ SKETCHES OF SPAIN (50TH ANNIVERSARY LEGACY EDITION)
COLUMBIA 43949 (Barcode: 886974394921) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1959 Released: 2009

It is extremely hard to believe that this masterpiece is half a century old! Hearing it today reveals therefore that trumpeter Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and arranger / conductor Gil EvansFind albums by this artist were both visionaries, in addition to their supreme musical sensitivity and revolutionary approach to music expansion. Combing Jazz with non-Western Classical music, in this case the magnificent "Concierto de Aranjuez" by Joaquin RodrigoFind albums by this artist (originally a concerto for guitar and orchestra, arranged for trumpet by Evans), was a bold step and one of the first examples of Jazz-World Fusion. Sure enough some American critics and fans hated it from day one, using the "usual" intelligent argument: "This is not Jazz". But Jazz it was, a magnificent new form of Jazz, where the lyrical composition and brilliant (and not less lyrical) interpretation by Miles just fit together like a dream. The muted trumpet played by Miles turns into a magical / mystical mythological flute, luring the listener into the music, completely intoxicated by the sound. I could go on and on about the music, but what´s the point, just grab it and listen. The original LP was extended for this special addition with a whole second CD of bonus material, including studio outtakes and the only live performance of this music with Davis and Evans. Totally essential!

The set includes the 4 milestone albums: Miles AheadFind albums with this title, Porgy And BessFind albums by this artist, Sketches Of SpainFind albums with this title and Quiet NightsFind albums with this title and of course hours of additional material, beautifully remastered. EL GRECO ~ SING CUCKOO
INSPIRAFON 02 (Barcode: 5903111259006) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz & Poetry

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2013

This is the debut album by Polish ensemble El GrecoFind albums by this artist, led by keyboardist / composer Joachim MencelFind albums by this artist, which also includes vocalist Jorgos SkoliasFind albums by this artist, DJ Wojciech DlugoszFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Mr. KrimeFind albums by this artist) who performs turntablism, bassist Andrzej SwiesFind albums by this artist and Austrian drummer Harry TanschekFind albums by this artist. The album includes ten tracks, eight of which are songs and the remaining two instrumental pieces. The eight songs are all composed by Mencel to lyrics by Polish poets (five of the songs, naturally sung in Polish) and literary texts in English (the remaining three, sung in English). One of the instrumentals is a group composition and the remaining one is by Gil EvansFind albums by this artist.

This is obviously quite an ambitious project, well within the Jazz & Poetry realm, which seems to be a favorite of the Polish music scene. However, contrary to many splendid efforts in this area this album leaves me quite cold. It´s quite difficult to pinpoint the exact reasons for my opinion, but somehow the mixture of complex, sophisticated poetry with the rather simplistic music does not work for me. Anybody engaging in the poems of Cyprian Kamil NorwidFind albums by this artist must be aware of their masterly interpretation by the legendary NiemenFind albums by this artist or more recently by Stan BorysFind albums by this artist and in comparison the versions presented here seem to be quite pale.

The music seems to be by and large based on blues themes, with a modernistic rhythm patterns emphasized by the turntablism. There is a limited space for serious improvisation and the atmosphere is more of an alterative Rock album than a Jazz album, which of course might be just what the ensemble (or the leader) wanted to achieve. The only thing that makes this album enjoyable as far as I´m concerned is the truly excellent work by Andrzej Swies, who emerges as the star of this particular project and without whom this music simply wouldn´t work at all. As usually the attempt to sing in English proves to be fatal.

Overall this is not a bad album and many people will probably enjoy it, but I just can´t seem to be able to warm up towards it. Mea culpa!

GIL EVANS ~ SVENGALI
RHINO 081227372026 (Barcode: 081227372026) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2003

American (Canadian born) pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Gil EvansFind albums by this artist was always a beacon of inspiration and a forward thinking innovator, one of the few music individuals that kept pushing Jazz to and beyond its limits. He came to fame after working with Miles DavisFind albums by this artist in the late 1950s and early 1960s, but he continued to produce extraordinary pieces of music until his death in 1988. This album presents a live recording of Evans and his orchestra, performing six extended pieces arranged by him. This reissue includes a full version of one of the tracks as a bonus track, which appears in a shortened version on the original album.

The music on this album presents a superb amalgam of cross-genre influences, encompassing all Jazz sub genres from Free to Jazz-Rock Fusion, bonded together by intricate orchestral arrangements, which no one else but Evans could create. The six pieces vary in style and atmosphere, but the album maintains a cohesive musical approach and the overall result is simply stunning. It is evident that the explosion of Jazz-Rock Fusion influenced Evans, who on this album embraces the (then) new development, including electric instruments in the orchestra, and doing it brilliantly and lovingly. Just a year later Evans will make the ultimate Fusion recording of his career, when the orchestra will record an album of Jimi HendrixFind albums by this artist music.

The list of musicians participating on this album includes guitarist Ted DunbarFind albums by this artist, tuba player Howard JohnsonFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Billy HarperFind albums by this artist, trumpeters Richard WilliamsFind albums by this artist and Marvin PetersonFind albums by this artist, electric bassist Herb BushlerFind albums by this artist and many others. The individual solos and the overall orchestral performances are all extraordinary and deeply inspiring. The inclusion of synthesizer player David HorowitzFind albums by this artist and his parts on this album are nothing short of prophetic.

In retrospect this is one of the classic recordings of the era, which continues to be completely relevant to this very day, as well as a beautiful document of the Genius of Gil Evans. Every true Jazz connoisseur should have a copy of this album in his collection.

GIL EVANS / ORCHESTRA ~ PLAYS THE MUSIC OF JIMI HENDRIX (EXPANDED EDITION)
RCA 63872 (Barcode: 090266387229) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1974 - 1975 Released: 2005

Pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Gil EvansFind albums by this artist was surely one of the most forward-thinking and open-minded Jazz Masters, who were able to overcome the typical American Jazz snobbery and keep their ears wide-open to anything of interest that was happening outside of the genre´s stifling ramparts. His revolutionary work with Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, one of the first examples of cross-genre music making and amalgamation of World Music elements into Jazz earned him his initial glory and recognition, but Evans remained a pioneer for the rest of his life. He was also the first Jazz personality to recognize and publically acknowledge his admiration of the talents of Jimi HendrixFind albums by this artist, not only as an exceptional guitarist but also as a great composer. Evans approached Hendrix with a cooperation proposal, which Jimi accepted wholeheartedly, but alas Jimi´s untimely death turned all plans into unfulfilled dreams. However, in spite of the disappointment, Evans decided to pay tribute to the genius of Hendrix by recording this exceptional album of arrangements of music composed by Hendrix, performed by his orchestra. This stunning example of Jazz-Rock Fusion is completely different from most other efforts pursued at the time worldwide and demonstrates a perfect marriage between Jazz and Rock in the orchestral realm. The orchestra, which included mostly young and up-coming Jazz virtuosi, features such illustrious players as guitarists John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist and Ryo KawasakiFind albums by this artist, trumpeters Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist and Marvin PetersonFind albums by this artist, saxophonists David SanbornFind albums by this artist and George AdamsFind albums by this artist, drummers Bruce DitmasFind albums by this artist and Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist and many more. Hearing the music of Hendrix in this fantastic setting is an exceptional musical expedition, especially for people who are familiar with the original recordings by Hendrix. Evans finds new hidden facets in this music, which only a great musician can discover, and shares them with the listener, taking him on a journey of discovery. This expanded edition presents all the material on the original LP in unabridged form and adds alternative takes as bonuses. Exceptional stuff and a must for any true music lover!

GIL EVANS ORCHESTRA ~ TRIBUTE TO GIL
SOUL NOTE 121209 (Barcode: 02731212092) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1988 Released: 1989

The great American (of Canadian origin) pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Gil EvansFind albums by this artist was one of the most influential Jazz personalities in the 20th Century. The orchestra he led and conducted, The Gil Evans OrchestraFind albums by this artist, was undoubtedly one of the most important orchestras in Jazz history, for many reasons, the most important of which being the constant innovative approach as far as the arrangements were concerned and the openness to other music genres, especially Rock, which often made the orchestra sound like a Rock Big Band, as well as the presence of young and upcoming Jazz players as members of the orchestra.

In the summer of 1987 the orchestra performed in Italy and was enthusiastically welcomed by the warm Italian audiences. Following Evans´ death in March of 1988 it was decided to repeat the Italian concert series in July of 1988, as a tribute to Evans, which included appearances at the Umbria and Sicilia Jazz Festivals, where the music presented on this album was recorded. The orchestra´s lineup reads like a who´s who of American and European Jazz at the time: trumpeters Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist, Hannibal PetersonFind albums by this artist and Miles EvansFind albums by this artist (Gil´s son), saxophonists Chris HunterFind albums by this artist and Alex FosterFind albums by this artist, pianist Gil GoldsteinFind albums by this artist, guitarist Bireli LagreneFind albums by this artist, bassist Mark EganFind albums by this artist, drummer Danny GottliebFind albums by this artist and many others. For Polish Jazz enthusiasts it is worthy to mention that both vocalist Urszula DudziakFind albums by this artist and violinist Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist take part in the proceedings.

The music is a series of vibrant cross-genre oriented arrangements, which use a Funky rhythm section pulsation and layers of Big Band brass sound to create a unique amalgam. Four of the six tracks present music composed by Evans and are a great tribute to his compositional vision. The Dudziak / Goldstein duo is one of the absolute highlights of the album, featuring her idiosyncratic vocal / electronics pyrotechnics.

Overall this is a great tribute to Evans´ contribution to Jazz music and a piece of history well deserved revisiting!

MICHAEL GIBBS + TWELVE ~ PLAY GIL EVANS
WHIRLWIND 4639 (Barcode: 639713711943) ~ UK ~ Big Band Jazz

Recorded: 2012 Released: 2013

This is a criminally little known album by British Jazz composer / arranger / bandleader Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, recorded with a twelve-piece orchestra comprising of mostly young British Jazz musicians. As the title suggests, the album is a tribute to the American composer / arranger / bandleader Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, who influenced Gibb’s musical path and who was undoubtedly one of the most far-thinking, revolutionary and unique personalities in the orchestral Jazz idiom. The album presents ten tracks, two of which are original compositions by Gibbs, one composition by Evans, three standards and the rest are compositions by American Jazz composers, spanning diverse Jazz sub-genres.

The music is a wonderful adaptation of the Evans arrangements, expanded with additional contributions by Gibbs, creating a contemporary orchestral Jazz of the highest quality. The album focus, in addition to the arrangements, is also on the soloing by the individual musicians, and offers some spectacular soli, especially those by German (resident in UK) pianist Hans KollerFind albums by this artist (not to be confused with the legendary Austrian saxophonist), saxophonist Julian SiegelFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Robbie RobsonFind albums by this artist, American (also resident in UK) bassist Michael JanischFind albums by this artist (founder and owner of the WhirlwindFind albums on this label Records label, which released this album) and others.

The two Gibbs originals are masterpieces of modern orchestral Jazz and brilliant examples of his compositional skills, which of course are already universally acknowledged. The diversity of the rest of the material makes the album a vigorous listening experience, full of excellent musicianship and heartfelt delivery.

Overall this is a vital addition to the Michael Gibbs recorded legacy, which no fan of his would like to miss in his collection. All Jazz lovers, including of curse the avid British Jazz crowd, should definitely own a copy of this album.

Conceived by the legendary producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, this is one of the earliest and most striking examples of Jazz-World Fusion in European Jazz, which retains all of its beauty and elegance to this very day. Of course Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and Gil EvansFind albums by this artist recorded "Sketches Of SpainFind albums with this title" a few years earlier, producing a classic example of the genre, but this album merges Jazz and the folkloristic elements much more naturally and symbiotically.

The music allows plenty of space for all the participants to play stretched solos and the listener is fully exposed to their abilities. Iturralde plays some very proficient statements and his sound and phrasing incorporates a distinctive Spanish flavor. De Lucia is brilliant as always and his acoustic guitar emits an unstoppable cascade of notes. Overall the music is simply wonderful from start to finish and manages to move and excite, displaying elegance and grace of rare quality.

Jazz-World Fusion connoisseurs should rejoice having the opportunity to grab a copy of this album, which was out of print for decades. Hopefully it will be discovered by the young generation of music lovers and musicians alike, as it a true classic example of the idiom.
Side Note
The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.

In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.

Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.

In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.

Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

RUNE KLAKEGG & SCHEEN JAZZORKESTER ~ FJON
LOSEN 153 (Barcode: 7090025831539) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016

This is a beautiful album by Norwegian Jazz pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Rune KlakeggFind albums by this artist, recorded with the Scheen JazzorkesterFind albums by this artist, a regional orchestra comprising of thirteen players, of which Klakegg is the artistic director and pianist. The album presents six original compositions by Klakegg and one arrangement of a standard. Vibraphonist Rob WaringFind albums by this artist, a long time musical associate of Klakegg, appears as a guest and fourteenth orchestra member and vocalist Nina GromstadFind albums by this artist guests on one track. The album was recorded at the legendary Rainbow Studio in Oslo, with Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist presiding at the console, which of course means that the sound quality and clarity is exceptional.

The music includes a collection of compositions by Klakegg, which have been assembled for a concert celebrating his sixtieth anniversary, and were consequently recorded for this album. The exquisite arrangements turn this music into a typical European large ensemble musical journey, which is as close to musical bliss as one ever gets. I have always been a sucker for the Big Band / Orchestral sound and therefore this album is an immediate favorite.

Although the arrangements include solos on some of the tracks, the name of the game is the ensemble work and sound, with delicate, multilayered intricacies, which are revealed during consecutive listening sessions. Of course the arrangements have some relationship to the legacy of Gil EvansFind albums by this artist and Maria SchneiderFind albums by this artist, but also European influences like George GruntzFind albums by this artist and Mathias RüeggFind albums by this artist come to mind.

Most of the stunning melodic themes composed by Klakegg are melancholic and delightfully lyrical, with a certain touch of the Nordic elegance and majestic calmness. But the music on this album is full of internal dynamics and flows rapidly like the Norwegian streams originating in the ice caps. Having just returned from the magnificent Norwegian landscapes, this music invokes immediately the fresh memories and will probably remain associated with them forever. In many respects I could envisage this music as a soundtrack of a documentary about Norway´s spectacular beauty.

For connoisseurs of Orchestral Jazz this album is an immediate classic, and as such deserves to be heard by as many people as possible. The elegance, modesty and discipline that this album presents is a model for all orchestral Jazz recordings and deserves to be taught at music academies as an example of good taste. Gorgeous stuff!

NEW JAZZ ORCHESTRA ~ CAMDEN `70
DUSK FIRE 105 (Barcode: 5065001032042) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2008

The New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. NJOFind albums by this artist) led by composer / arranger Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist was Britain’s most prestigious and adventurous big band in the 1960s. Under Ardley’s visionary leadership the band developed the foundations for the modern European Jazz big band sound. Although incorporating the classic American big band tradition of Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist and the more modern approach of Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, Ardley managed to steer his band into uncharted territory, using his unique approach to instrumentation and bold arrangements.

At the time this album was recorded live at London’s Camden Jazz Festival in May of 1970, Ardley was already moving rapidly towards the exploding Jazz-Rock Fusion genre, creating one of the first, and magnificent at that, examples of Jazz-Rock Fusion big band. Compared to American bands at the time, like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist or ChicagoFind albums by this artist, Ardley’s approach is definitely much more refined and orchestral and uses a wider arsenal of the Jazz vocabulary, being therefore much more sophisticated. Having at his disposal some of the best British Jazz musicians (and then also Jazz-Rock Fusion musicians) he was able to turn the NJO into a “mean” and powerful Jazz-Rock Fusion ensemble, which truly fuses Jazz and Rock to the max.

This of course brings us the players and more specifically to the fact that this version of NJO incorporates in its midst the entire lineup of one of the greatest British Jazz-Rock groups, ColosseumFind albums by this artist. Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist (saxophone), Clem ClempsonFind albums by this artist (guitar), Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist (keyboards), Tony ReevesFind albums by this artist (bass) and Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist (drums) all play here, and even a couple of tracks the band recorded on their albums are present, in a big band arrangement of course. With the members of Colosseum as a core of the band and with other notable players like Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist and Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Dave GellyFind albums by this artist and Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist (saxophone) and even an ultra-rare appearance of Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist on trombone, this is truly a superb group, able to face any challenge Ardley’s arrangements may present them with.

BTW the presence of the Colosseum members is not incidental, as both Reeves and Hiseman were NJO’s founding members and Heckstall-Smith appeared on the NJO’s second album entitled “Le Dejeuner Sur L`HerbeFind albums with this title”. Seven of the tracks present on that album are also included here, which turns this recording into an updated live version of that timeless classic. The original recording tape of this concert had quite a few technical problems, but was painstakingly and beautifully restored to life with an exceptional sound quality considering the circumstances under which it was recorded. One should be truly grateful to the producer of this immensely important historical material for making it available to us, the fans of NJO, Colosseum and British Jazz in general. This is indispensable legacy of the period and a must to any follower of British Jazz music.

NEW JAZZ ORCHESTRA ~ WESTERN REUNION LONDON 1965
VOCALION 8427 (Barcode: 765387842727) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1965 Released: 2006

The New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. NJOFind albums by this artist) was a big band directed by bandleader / arranger / composer Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist and consisted of the best up-coming Jazz players on the British scene at the time: Ian CarrFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist – trombone, Trevor WattsFind albums by this artist – sax, Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist – sax, Tony ReevesFind albums by this artist – bass, Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist – drums and many more.

Ardley ran the orchestra with an “iron fist” and in time turned it into a perfectly well oiled ensemble, which was able to perform even the trickiest arrangements with a breeze. His outstanding arrangements of classic Jazz pieces are all masterpieces of rare beauty and sophistication and he manages to get out of the band so much more that an average US big band playing similar material. Of course the soloist, who are all quite outstanding, add another dimension to the overall sound, which is truly heavenly.

This is the first album by NJO and includes mostly standards by American (Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, John LewisFind albums by this artist) and British composers, but one of Ardley’s compositions is also included. Ardley, who was an admirer of Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, developed a distinctive orchestral (rather than traditional big band) sound with NJO, using the various sections of the band to complement each other’s sound and tonality.

The overall effect is absolutely stunning and this is one of my all time favorite big band albums. This is essential listening to all big band fans and recommended to all Jazz listeners out there. A true gem!

Recorded: 1999 Released: 2000

British saxophonist / composer Andy SheppardFind albums by this artist needs no introduction to followers of British Jazz. He earned an impressive reputation since the late 1970s, playing in many famous ensembles both in Britain and abroad, like the ones led by George RussellFind albums by this artist, Gil EvansFind albums by this artist and Carla BleyFind albums by this artist. His extensive discography recorded over the years proves his status as one of Britain’s foremost instrumentalists beyond a shadow of a doubt. Sheppard has a rare talent of combining beautiful melodies and expanded improvisation is a way that makes his music accessible to a relatively large audience on one hand, but remains intellectually challenging on the other. In 1998 Sheppard joined the roster of the prestigious British ProvocateurFind albums on this label Records label, and released a series of landmark recordings on that label in the following years. On this album, the follow-up release, the quintet is expanded to a septet with the addition of the legendary US electric bass player Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist and young tabla player Kuljit BhamraFind albums by this artist. Sheppard composed all the music, which is mostly low-key and lyrical, beautifully melodic and sometimes even sentimental (in a positive way of course). His soprano saxophone lures the listener like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, being extremely addictive. JUKKA TOLONEN BAND / HURMERINTA – SORVALI BIG BAND ~ POP LIISA VOL. 09 & VOL. 10
SVART 015 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1975 - 1977 Released: 2016

Following the breakdown of the pioneering Finnish group Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist in 1974, guitarist / composer Jukka TolonenFind albums by this artist continued his successful solo career, releasing albums on a regular basis. By the time his band was captured playing on this live broadcast, his fourth solo album "HystericaFind albums with this title" was about to be released soon after. The band, which also included saxophonist Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Esa KotilainenFind albums by this artist, bassist Heikki VirtanenFind albums by this artist and drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist, perform four instrumental pieces, all originating from the "Hysterica" album and all composed by Tolonen. These live versions of the pieces are quite different from the studio versions and therefore their inclusion here is a perfect companion to the original album.

The music is almost completely Fusion oriented, with superb soloing by all the band members. Kotilainen´s keyboard performances are probably the only strong link present here to Progressive Rock, but the Fusion elements include also some Funk influences. Considering the fact that the bad collectively comprised of the "hottest" players on the Finnish scene, the fact that all the performances here are simply stellar.

Guitarist Sami HurmerintaFind albums by this artist, his wife vocalist Maarit HurmerintaFind albums by this artist and drummer Upi SorvaliFind albums by this artist put together the Hurmerinta – Sorvali Big BandFind albums by this artist in 1977, combining forces with many musicians they performed and recorded with earlier on, such as British vocalist Frank RobsonFind albums by this artist (ex-Tasavallan Presidentti), trumpeter Esko HeikkinenFind albums by this artist, Romanian trombonist Mircea StanFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Pertti PaivinenFind albums by this artist and Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Kari KuusamoFind albums by this artist, bassist Harri MerilahtiFind albums by this artist, and second drummer Roope KoistinenFind albums by this artist. This eleven-piece Big Band was not a typical Jazz Big Band, but rather a Brass Rock ensemble with a double vocal front. The Big Band existed for about a year between 1977 and 1978 and never recorded a studio album, so this live broadcast is their only recorded legacy.

The Big Band performs six songs, three of which were written by Jimi HendrixFind albums by this artist, two by Robson and one by Sami Hurmerinta. Hendrix was an obvious influence on these musicians and the legendary album by Gil EvansFind albums by this artist and his Orchestra "Plays The Music Of Jimi HendrixFind albums with this title" prompted them to form the Big Band in the first place. The music is of course typical of Brass Rock bands of the time, which combined Rock and Jazzy horns sound.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for Fusion and Jazz oriented Prog-heads this is an absolute must have!
Side Note
The Finnish independent label SvartFind albums on this label Records released an unprecedented series of albums called Pop Liisa and Jazz Liisa, which present priceless historical recordings of Finnish Rock, Progressive Rock, Jazz-Rock Fusion and Jazz music, recorded live and broadcasted from the Liisankatu Studios in Helsinki under the "Popstudio" and "Jazzstudio" monikers between 1972 and 1977. The studios were owned by the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company), a public broadcasting service, which not only allowed the burgeoning Finnish music scene at the time to be exposed but also carefully archived the recordings for future generations. All this incredible music was previously unissued and collectively is probably the most important document of Finnish music from that period ever assembled.

The music was released on 36 LPs (Pop Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18 and Jazz Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18) and on 18 CDs with every two consecutive volumes combined on one CD.

The sound quality is absolutely superb, often better than the sound quality on the LPs released by these artists at the time. Many of the groups appearing on these albums never managed to record an album and these recordings are the only recorded legacy in existence of their activity. The released are accompanied by well researched and intelligent liner notes.

This archival project is an outstanding example of how Cultural Legacy should be treated as well as of exemplary dedication to record producing professionalism.

COLIN TOWNS ~ LEND ME YOUR EARS
PROVOCATEUR 1038 (Barcode: 5038491103820) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2005 - 2006 Released: 2006

British pianist / composer / arranger / bandleader Colin TownsFind albums by this artist, one the most talented and prolific European Jazz composers, cooperates often with Europe’s premiere Jazz orchestra, the German NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist from Hamburg. This album presents a series of original compositions by Towns, written especially for the NDR Big Band and performed by it. Having at his disposal such esteemed and well trained group of musicians, Towns is able to stretch his compositional and arranging skill to the limit, creating some of the most magnificent big band music ever recorded. The music covers a vast musical panorama, from exotic World Music influences, via chamber pieces and even electronics. Brilliantly performed (and superbly recorded), this is a beautiful example of music, which is fresh, intelligent and innovative, dazzling with its intricacy and moving with its melodic lyricism. The compositions include a six-part Jazz suite dedicated to and featuring the talents of Polish pianist Wladyslaw SendeckiFind albums by this artist, who is the NDR Big Band’s resident pianist. There is ample space for some superb solos by the band’s members, including saxophonist Christof LauerFind albums by this artist, one of Europe’s most distinguished players today. I can hardly imagine a more perfect big band recording, which is an instant classic and a superb example of the Jazz Art Form, something that should inspire and educate other Jazz composers and arrangers and set an example for others to study. It is, after all, a collection of the entire Jazz vocabulary harmonically, stylistically and historically. Well-trained listeners should have no trouble hearing shades of New Orleans marching bands, Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist’s masterly compositions and Gil EvansFind albums by this artist’ pioneering orchestrations, mind you subtle shadows as in smiling Angels watching over Towns, never imitations or plagiarism so often heard in other big band efforts. If it was up to me I’d have made this album a compulsory learning tool for every Jazz student, but alas this is beyond my powers. I still can, however, recommend this beauty to every connoisseur of truly great music - Jazz included. As I already said – a true classic!

By the end of the 1950s Wheeler started an association with saxophonist /composer / bandleader Johnny DankworthFind albums by this artist, playing in his various ensembles, which would last for the next decade. In 1968 Dankworth suggested to Wheeler that he´d used a three months period of recovery from a surgery to compose a suite for a Jazz group and orchestra, a suggestion Wheeler accepted with open hands. The result was the magnificent piece of music presented here, based on the tragic story of Don Quixote. Performed by a quintet, which comprised of Wheeler, saxophonist / clarinetist Tony CoeFind albums by this artist, guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and drummer John SpoonerFind albums by this artist and the Johnny Dankworth Orchestra, this milestone of British Jazz remains every bit as much relevant today as it was at the time of its recording. ROBERT WYATT ~ THE END OF AN EAR
COLUMBIA 493342 (Barcode: 5099749334229) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene

Recorded: 1970 Released: 1998

1st album by drummer / keyboardist / singer / composer and one of the Canterbury movement founding figures, Robert WyattFind albums by this artist, recorded while he was still a member of Soft MachineFind albums by this artist. Sadly often overlooked, this revolutionary recording shows Wyatt´s visionary approach to music and his deep involvement with the UK Avant-Garde Jazz scene, which was approaching a peak of its development at the time. Overall this album is more radically Jazz oriented than the music created by Soft Machine at the time, which was still related to Rock roots and essentially an extension of the early Jazz-Rock Fusion efforts. The only Soft Machine member appearing on this album is saxophonist Elton DeanFind albums by this artist, who shared Wyatt´s passion for Jazz. The rest of the players are prominent UK Jazz musicians like bassist Neville WhiteheadFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Mark CharigFind albums by this artist, pianist Mark ElidgeFind albums by this artist and Canterbury legend Dave SinclairFind albums by this artist on organ. Wyatt composed all the music except one tune, which is a Gil EvansFind albums by this artist composition heavily arranged by Wyatt. Wyatt´s drumming on this album is spectacular, completely unique in his rhythmic approach and closely related in the form of collective improvisation to the expressions of his partners. One can only imagine how Wyatt´s involvement with the British Avant-Garde Jazz scene would have developed, if not for the tragic accident, which cut short his drumming career. Therefore this album becomes even more historically important, presenting that aspect of the man´s genius. For listeners acquainted with Wyatt´s later years, this album should be quite a revelation, although probably a much tougher musical challenge. In retrospect this album remains as essential document of an era, when breaking musical barriers was completely acceptable and music was making giant steps towards a new horizon. This is a visionary work in every respect, which should be cherished and returned to periodically, to be re-discovered. A must for any serious music lover!
