  | NEIL ARDLEY / IAN CARR / MICHAEL GIBBS / STAN TRACEY ~ WILL POWER VOCALION 8412 (Barcode: 765387841225) ~ UK ~ Jazz
This stunningly beautiful album managed to stay on the top of my personal list for over 30 years now and I love it as much as I did the first time I heard it. It simply represents all the beauty, sophistication and intellectual quality of the British Jazz of the late 1960s / 1970s, perhaps more accurately and more concisely than any other one album. It documents a concert performed at London’s Southwark Cathedral, one of the many events dedicated to Shakespeare’s tercentenary celebrations, and presents four major works written by four great British Jazz composers: Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist, Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist and Stan TraceyFind albums by this artist, dedicated to Shakespeare’s genius.
The list of performers certainly resembles the “Who’s Who” of British Jazz at the time and includes: Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist and Pepi LemerFind albums by this artist – vocals, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Tony CoeFind albums by this artist – reeds, Paul BuckmasterFind albums by this artist and Colin WalkerFind albums by this artist – cello, Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, John TaylorFind albums by this artist and Stan Tracey – keyboards, Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist – bass, Tony LevinFind albums by this artist – drums and Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist – percussion. All the lengthy suites, although quite different from each other, are majestic and respectful to the great poet’s legacy, often touching on Elizabethan era motifs, even if ever so slightly. The ambience of the Cathedral adds to the overall effect and the magic of that performance if caught forever by this extraordinary recording.
Everything that is so great about Jazz – composition, arrangement and performance – is unified here to produce that magical moment, which can never be repeated. I can’t imagine anybody not liking this, and although it’s by far no easy listening, the immediate magnanimity of this music is so apparent that repeated listening could only deepen the experience. Beyond essential!

  | GORDON BECK ~ APPLEBY BLUES (LIMITED EDITION) ART OF LIFE 1025 (Barcode: 804640102526) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2005 Released: 2007
This live recording of the Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist trio at the Appleby Jazz Festival is a great proof of the fact that the legendary pianist is still at the top of his form in spite of his age. Vibrant and brilliant as always, Beck flies through a set original compositions and standards with grace and sensibility, rarely found elsewhere. Back is supported by an excellent rhythm section: the excellent young bass player Jeremy BrownFind albums by this artist and brilliant veteran drummer Tony LevinFind albums by this artist (who like Beck played in the Tubby HayesFind albums by this artist groups). Together they present a superb Jazz piano trio music, which sparkles with technical perfection and musicality. Levin’s extraordinary drumming is a perfect match for Back’s talents and his solo spots are quite amazing. The recording quality is also exceptionally fine, with every little detail perfectly audible. All together this is a perfect Jazz piano trio album, which every lover of that format will love and play repeatedly. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | GORDON BECK ~ DREAMS JMS 049 (Barcode: 3129675004926) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1989 Released: 1989
This is an album by British keyboardist / composer Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, one of the great heroes of the British Jazz scene since the early 1960s. It is essentially a solo keyboards album, except for a few vocal contributions on four tracks by the American vocalist Rowanne MarkFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven original compositions by Beck, with the title tracks being a two-part mini suite. Beck plays piano and a plethora of different synthesizers and even a drum machine. The album was recorded in the USA and was produced by Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist.
Starting in the late 1970s Beck recorded many albums for the French OwlFind albums on this label and JMSFind albums on this label labels, several of with involved Holdsworth and other notable British and French Jazz musicians.
This album presents the more romantic / lyrical side of his musical persona, as well as his amazing technique and composing depth. The music is all melody based, and the wonderfully crafted compositions are ideal vehicles for Beck to spread his wings as a performer, although his recording legacy shows him as being a brilliant accompanist as well.
Overall, this is a wonderful piece of the Gordon Beck puzzle, which although perhaps less celebrated, is definitely worth being discovered and deserves an honorable place in every serious British Jazz collection.

  | GORDON BECK ~ EXPERIMENTS WITH POPS ART OF LIFE 1001 (Barcode: 804640100126) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1967 Released: 2001
Pianist / composer Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist is one of the true forefathers of modern British and European Jazz; a pioneer and revolutionary in every sense and a giant musician, who managed to free himself from the boundaries imposed by the American Jazz tradition and take the music a step further to a new sphere. What is even more remarkable and amazing is the fact that in contrast to most British and European musicians, who took their emancipation from the rigors of the past towards Free Jazz and Improvised Music, Beck remained firmly within the seemingly “mainstream” form, playing melodically and in strict time, and yet so much “out there” that for people who are able to hear the difference it’s truly staggering. Beck first came to prominence when he joined the group led by British Jazz legend Tubby HayesFind albums by this artist in 1962 and remained with him for several years as his regular pianist, performing and recording some of the most remarkable albums in the British Jazz history. Since 1967 Beck started to record as a leader and his trio became the “house band” of the famous Ronnie ScottFind albums by this artist’s London club. By the end of the 1960s he took part in the development of the British Jazz-Rock Fusion, playing with Phil WoodsFind albums by this artist in the European Rhythm MachineFind albums by this artist and later with NucleusFind albums by this artist. He became increasingly involved with other musicians from the European scene, especially with many French Jazz players (an association that thrives to these very days). His extensive discography accumulated over the years, both as leader and sideman, is a formidable body of work, which stands out as one of the most consistently excellent and creative. This album was Beck’s second (out of three) release on the tiny independent Major MinorFind albums on this label label, which in time became one of the most sought after British Jazz collector’s items. For the recording Beck expanded his trio (Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist – bass and Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist – drums) to a quartet, with the addition of no other that guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, known at the time as “Johnny”. Apart from the fact that this is one of the very few early McLaughlin recordings, and therefore of immense historical value, the entire quartet is probably one of the strongest and most extraordinary European ensembles, pioneering the European approach of collective playing. McLaughlin’s brilliant arpeggios, Oxley’s prophetic time keeping away from time, Clyne’s innovative bass explorations and Beck’s flights all over the keyboard collectively create an new amalgam of sounds, taking the music to a new dimension, previously unexplored. How ironic, considering that the material consists entirely from Pop songs popular at the time (hence the album’s title), but in the hands of these players the music becomes truly experimental, as promised by the album’s title. The album’s producer Ray HorricksFind albums by this artist writes in the original liner notes: “This could be the most creative Jazz quartet album ever recorded in Europe… previous quartet recordings in London, or on the Continent, and including the best, have consisted of a rhythm section accompanying a leading soloist; whereas this one features a genuine collective development along lines which no other group, except Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist’s in America, has yet proceeded”. How perceptive and prophetic… Kudos to Paul KohlerFind albums by this artist of Art Of LifeFind albums on this label Records for bringing this timeless masterpiece back to circulation. This music, 40 years after it was recorded, sounds better and more exciting than most of what one hears in contemporary Jazz. Absolutely essential!

  | GORDON BECK ~ GYROSCOPE ART OF LIFE 1003 (Barcode: 804640100324) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1968 Released: 2002
Pianist / composer Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, one of the true forefathers of modern British and European Jazz, has been a source of inspiration and musical joy to Jazz connoisseurs since the 1960s. His formidable technique and more importantly overwhelming musicality are completely unique and unrivaled. This, his 4th recording as a leader, deserves a special notice for many reasons. Stylistically it is somewhat atypical to Beck’s usual output, as it marks his exploration of “free form” Jazz, which was enjoying a period of unparalleled prosperity in Britain at the time this album was recorded, with momentous recordings by other British piano giants like Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist, Keith TippettFind albums by this artist and others. However, in Beck’s case the “free form” remains somewhat tamed by his immense love of melody, thus creating one of the most formidable examples of early European “free form”, which even the most conservative Jazz listener can easily savor. This is Beck’s genius, but the credit must also go to his two partners: bassist Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist. The trio plays here in complete unity, with telepathic interplay and cohesiveness. Clyne is a monster player, incredibly melodic and with a sublime sense of rhythm and Oxley is a complete genius, the most intelligent and technically proficient drummer to come out of the British Isles. This is a marvelous opportunity to hear Oxley’s work at the time he was still playing “time”, although of course in his very special way of doing so, with the “time” being felt rather that actually played, since he is all over his kit doing stuff that is not recommended to be tried at home. This album was originally released on the tiny MorganFind albums on this label Records (owned by the famous Morgan Recording Studios in London) and disappeared from the shelves soon after, becoming one of the British Jazz most sought after collector’s items. The reissue on Art Of LifeFind albums on this label brings back to life a masterpiece of immense importance, which is an essential piece of the complex musical puzzle created in Britain by the end of the 1960s. I can’t imagine any serious British / European Jazz fan not having this momentous recording in their collection. Beyond essential!

  | GORDON BECK ~ JAZZ TRIO ART OF LIFE 1017 (Barcode: 804640101727) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1972 Released: 2005
Pianist / composer Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist is one of the key figures in the history of British Jazz and this album is a great document of his vital input as one of the pioneers of modern European Jazz. Recorded quite spontaneously during an Italian tour of the last version of the European Rhythm MachineFind albums by this artist, of which Beck and the other two musicians present here: British bassist Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist and Swiss drummer Daniel HumairFind albums by this artist, were members together with US saxophonist Phil WoodsFind albums by this artist, who was living in France at the time. The entire recording session took just a few short hours and captures Beck and his colleagues performing two extended compositions, each of which occupied an entire side of the original LP. The first, written by Beck, is a Jazz suite in three parts with the opening and closing sections being relatively “straightforward” and the middle section open up to free group improvisation. The second was a completely improvised piece of Free Jazz, co-composed by the trio. The music is simply breathtaking, full if incredible interplay and magic moments, with virtuosi performances. This is Beck’s most advanced venture into Free Jazz (although only partially so), previously attempted only on the fabulous “GyroscopeFind albums with this title” album, and therefore of immense historical importance. Although Beck usually stayed inside a more “conventional” Jazz framework throughout his career, his improvisational power is beyond reproach and his ability to operate in the Free Jazz realm is well proven by this album. Unfortunately this recording was know only to a very limited group of listeners, even the most dedicated Beck’s followers, so the CD reissue is most welcome. I’ve had this album for 36 years now and always regarded it as one of my favorite European Jazz releases, now others can also enjoy it. Brilliant stuff! Side Note: The original LP was released on a small Italian Jazz label called DireFind albums on this label Records, owned by Tito FontanaFind albums by this artist. Fontana owned a recording studio in Milan, called Studio 7 (or studio Fontana), which was famous for producing soundtracks for the burgeoning Italian film industry. Tito was a dedicated Jazz buff and had a great taste and vision in Jazz. His produced and released some of the most incredible European Jazz albums in the early 1970s, which (as far as I know) were not reissued on CD so far (except this album), which is a great pity and a true tragedy. Italian Jazz fans should note that the legendary pianist Guido ManusardiFind albums by this artist recorded for the label, as did Claudio FasoliFind albums by this artist and other great Italian Jazz musicians. Polish Jazz fans should note that both Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist and Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist also made albums for the label. I remember visiting Tito in Milan in 1974 and spending a few lovely days with him, talking Jazz day and night, drinking Italian wines and coffee and eating some incredible food. He was a gentle, highly intelligent person with a rare and boundless love for the music, which we both shared.

  | GORDON BECK ~ JUBILATION!: TRIOS, QUARTETS, AND SEPTETS IN SESSION 1964-1984 TURTLE 501 (Barcode: 5013929580107) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1964 - 1984 Released: 2018
This is an archival release collecting live recordings made by various ensembles led by the seminal British Jazz pianist / composer / bandleader Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, one of the key figures of the revolutionary British Jazz movement of the 1960s, who died in 2011. The recordings present Beck in different settings, from solo piano to a septet, spanning two crucial decades in which Beck and the entire British Jazz scene metamorphosed from a copycat of American Jazz to a bold, adventurous and pioneering musical movement with its own values and aesthetics, leading the rest of Europe towards the same process of emancipation.
On the recordings included in this release Beck is accompanied by the crème de la crème of the British Jazz heroes; bassists Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist, Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist and Mick HuttonFind albums by this artist, drummers Johnny ButtsFind albums by this artist, Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist and Steve ArguellesFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Ray WarleighFind albums by this artist and Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist, trombonist Chris PyneFind albums by this artist and trumpeter Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist. Of the twenty eight pieces performed, only three are standards and the rest are original compositions by Beck.
The music moves in a multidimensional space-time continuum, between traditional American Jazz and modern European Jazz, between standards and original compositions and between solo piano and ensemble playing, but always beautifully focused on Beck´s superb feel of melody and rhythm and his exquisite perception of harmony.
The trio recordings, which open the first of the three CDs included in this Box Set, present a transition, which presents the quantum jumps separated from each other by two years gaps (1964-1966-1968), by which Beck and the trio move from a Bill EvansFind albums by this artist inspired swing perfection to a much more open, almost free playing, emphasized mostly by the change of the drummer from Butts to Oxley, one of the most important Jazz drummers of all time. By the mid 1970s the trio will be brought to perfection with the inclusion of Mathewson, and rechristened to MOBFind albums by this artist (Mathewson / Oxley / Beck) which can be heard on the second CD.
The septet recordings, which take the rest of the first CD, are rather atypical in Beck´s career, as he preferred small ensembles, show Beck´s arranging skills, which he was able to perfect as the resident composer / arranger for the Ronnie ScottFind albums by this artist´s all-star band, which included six of the seven members of the septet (John SurmanFind albums by this artist is the missing one).
The latest (chronologically) recordings present a quintet session, which is led by the mature musician Beck has become in the meantime, are presented on the third CD. Beck´s solo material is presented on the second and third CDs.
Overall the Box Set is full of magnificent music, diverse stylistically, but always perfectly executed, which presents a portrait of a great Artist. Considering that all these recordings are previously unreleased, this in an absolute treasure chest and a historic document of the outmost importance. All the recordings were beautifully remastered and offer a first class listening experience.
The Box Set, which was released by the reanimated TurtleFind albums on this label Records, includes an extensive booklet written by Simon SpillettFind albums by this artist, which is intelligent, informative and well researched, a true model for what all releases of this kind should offer those who buy the product.
Absolutely essential to all British / European Jazz connoisseurs!

  | GORDON BECK ~ NOT THE LAST WALTZ ART OF LIFE 1008 (Barcode: 804640100829) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2003 Released: 2004
Pianist / composer Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist is one of the key figures in the history of British / European Jazz. His consistently excellent output, which now spans over four decades of activity, has always been a source of inspiration and a fountain of musical purity. The piano trio has always been Beck’s main vehicle for expressing his musical vision, starting with his early recordings as a leader in the late 1960s and continuing up to this very day. This album, recorded live at the Appleby Jazz Festival, captures his recent “French” trio with Bruno RousseletFind albums by this artist on bass and Philippe SoiratFind albums by this artist on drums. Obviously in high spirits, they fly through a set comprised mostly of Beck’s originals, with just a couple of standards. Beck seems to be completely unaffected by his age and his technical capabilities are in fool blossom. Aided by the virtuosity of the bass player and limitless energy of the drummer, Beck is able to fly all over the keyboard with ease and elegance, developing his inspired improvisations with their aid. The unity and interplay between the musicians is remarkable, regardless of the age difference between them. A bonus track, recorded live at a Parisian Jazz club, closes the album. The album is an instant classic as far as Jazz piano trios are concerned, and can be listened to repeatedly, always revealing new facets of Beck’s genius. A must for all Beck’s followers and piano trio enthusiasts.

Pianist / composer Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist is one of the icons of the modern British Jazz and his immense contribution to the scene is invaluable. He first came to prominence as a member of the legendary saxophonist Tubby HayesFind albums by this artist quintet and soon after formed his own trio, which was one of the most important ensembles at the time, which recorded some incredibly beautiful albums. Over the years Beck proved to be extremely prolific, recording tens of albums as leader and sidemen and hundreds as a studio musician. A hopeless romantic at heart, his incredibly melodic and lyrical compositions and extraordinary fluency as a player make him one of the finest European Jazz musician. Alongside Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist he is my favorite British piano player and a source of musical joy for over 40 years now. This, one of his latest albums (recorded when Beck was 61 years old!), recorded with two superb British Jazz veterans saxophonist Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist and bassist Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist with a young drummer Paul ClarvisFind albums by this artist, presents him still at the top of his powers both as a composer and a player. He composed four of the seven tunes on this album with Sultzmann contributing the other three. The music is an incredible example of contemporary Jazz, melodic and beautifully structured, but at the same time full of zest, adventure and sophistication. Those listeners, who are familiar with Beck’s output, will find this a worthy addition to his superb body of work. Those who don’t know him might find this album as a gate into an incredible word of high Art of Jazz. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | GORDON BECK ~ ONE FOR THE ROAD JMS 077 (Barcode: 3383001867528) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1995 Released: 1995
This is a solo album by British Jazz keyboardist / composer / bandleader Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, which features him playing acoustic and electric pianos, organ and synthesizers. The album presents nine tracks, all original compositions by Beck. It was released on the French JMSFind albums on this label Records, owned by Jean-Marie SalhaniFind albums by this artist, one of the most important European Jazz record producers. Beck was associated with the label for many years and recorded several albums for the label.
In order to avoid confusion, it should be noted that the album’s title is identical to the title of Beck’s debut solo album, recorded in 1976 and released a year later on the tiny (but superb) JaguarFind albums on this label label, which still remains unreleased on CD and is a highly sought-after collectors’ item. Seven of the compositions from that album appear also on this album, which makes it a re-make of sorts, which is a fascinating opportunity to compare the two recordings bridging almost a twenty-years gap.
The music is, as always, a brilliant example of Beck’s lyricism and superb keyboard technique, which made him one of leading British keyboardist on the local scene. He was a sublime accompanist and played with many leading figures, but his recordings as a leader where always excellent examples of melodic modern Jazz, although he could play Free Form if appropriate for a given moment.
Overall, this is a brilliant solo keyboards album, full of great music and exceptional performances, most notable on the acoustic piano. Sometimes romantic and at other moments experimental and adventurous, his music is always an uplifting experience. His death in 2011 was a great loss to all music lovers and to the British Jazz scene at large.

  | GORDON BECK ~ REFLECTIONS ART OF LIFE 1005 (Barcode: 804640100522) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1997 Released: 2003
Pianist / composer Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist is a living legend. Considered as one of the true forefathers of modern British and European Jazz, has been a source of inspiration and musical joy to Jazz connoisseurs since the 1960s. Fortunately for us, Jazz lovers, Beck continues his remarkable career, producing exquisite musical marvels, now in his 7th decade. He seems to be untouchable by time and his playing is as vigorous and energetic, as it was 40 years ago. This marvelous solo piano concert brilliantly recorded by the BBC, portraits Beck, as he truly is – a romantic, gentle and highly intelligent musician with thousands of volts running through his magic fingers. The album is a tribute to the genius of Bill EvansFind albums by this artist, including one of his compositions and standards Evans often played. But it is way beyond just a tribute; it is a re-examination of the entire Jazz piano tradition, and even a reflection on Beck’s entire lifetime as a pianist. Although very much an innovator and ceaseless explorer, Beck never ignored the 100 years of piano playing by other Jazz piano giants. Therefore in addition to traces of Evans, there are subtle hints of such divers musicians as Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist, Oscar PetersonFind albums by this artist, Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist and countless other piano players creating an amalgam, which in Beck’s hands become a unique new creation. Listening to the uplifting music could be one of the most enjoyable hours ever spent while listening to music and I wish every Jazz enthusiast would come across it. The album also includes a bonus track, which has Beck performing a composition by his life-long musical partner, guitarist Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist, who collaborated with Beck on many recordings. This album is an absolute must have for Jazz piano lovers of all ages, a work of rare sensibility and artistic perfection. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | GORDON BECK ~ SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN ART OF LIFE 1018 (Barcode: 804640101826) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2005 Released: 2005
Pianist / composer Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist continues to perform and record as if time stands still for him and his music. At the age of 70 his piano playing is as energetic and flawless as it has been throughout his glorious career. This live recording at a Parisian Jazz club, captures Beck with his regular “French” trio (Bruno RousseletFind albums by this artist on bass and Philippe SoiratFind albums by this artist on drums), expanded ad hoc to a quartet with the addition of saxophonist Pierrick PedronFind albums by this artist. They soar through a set of standards, as appropriate for a club date and a first meeting with a new member, which BTW is not evident at all, since they sound as if they had time to rehearse together – a result of obvious skill and professionalism. There is nothing groundbreaking presented here, just some first class modern jazz, done extremely well by four superb musicians. Of course Beck’s playing is never ordinary and his exceptional skills can be enjoyed to the fullest. This album should be enjoyable to a wide range of Jazz listeners, with its highly spirited performances and familiar material. Beck’s followers will of course love this stuff.

  | GORDON BECK / GYROSCOPE ~ PROGRESS JAZZ IN BRITAIN 12 (Barcode: 5060774190777) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1973 - 1974 Released: 2024
This is an archival album by the British pianist / composer / bandleader Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, which collects the available recordings of the short-lived GyroscopeFind albums by this artist ensemble from 1973 and 1974. The work on this project goes back a few years, to the early days of the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, and after being delayed for various reasons, was finally released in 2024. The convoluted story of the “making of…” is described in the wonderfully informative extended booklet, included with the 3CD album. The album presents eighteen lengthy tracks, sourced from rehearsals, live gigs and radio broadcasts. Four of these tracks were previously released on cassette only on Beck’s JaguarFind albums on this label Records label as “One, Two, Three… Go!Find albums with this title”, and the rest are all previously unreleased.
Gyroscope consisted of Beck on piano / electric piano, saxophonist / flautist Brian SmithFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist, bassist Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony LevinFind albums by this artist. Saxophonist / flautist Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist replaced Smith in late 1973.
The music, as expected, is absolutely brilliant, which is not surprising to anybody familiar with Beck’s work as leader and sideman. His extensive recorded legacy, which spans over thirty albums, is full of sublime music, which has always been one of my personal British Jazz favorites. His 1980s / 1990s releases on French OwlFind albums on this label and JMSFind albums on this label labels are among my favorites, but everything he recorded was blessed by his incredible talent and good taste.
These early 1970s recordings are especially interesting for two reasons: Firstly, the extensive use of the electric piano: Beck was enamored with the instrument and managed to create way more than one would expect was possible from the limited (in comparison to the acoustic piano) instrumented, being a true innovator, which is plainly audible on this album. Secondly, the stylistic freedom, which was somewhat typical at the time especially in British Jazz, which allowed an unrestrained mixture of Jazz subgenres to united “under one roof” so to speak. As a result, we can hear on this album Latin, Funk, Modern Jazz, Modal, post-Bebop and even some Free Jazz touches, which swiftly move from one to the other, in complete fluency and harmony.
Overall, this is a true gem of an album, worth the long wait, which is richly rewarded by the sublime musical content. For me it is one of the most important Jazz In Britain releases so far, not only because of my personal love of everything Gordon Beck related, but because it offers a comprehensive, well researched and put together piece of British Jazz history. As such, it is of course absolutely essential to all British Jazz lovers!

Contrary to popular opinion, British singer / songwriter / keyboardist Georgie FameFind albums by this artist was born to be a Jazz singer. Although his early career developed during the fabulous late 1960s and was mostly visible on the Pop scene, with several hit singles, his albums were another story entirely. Backed up by the cream of the crop of British Jazz musicians, Fame delivered his superbly sensitive vocals with elegance, always spiced with a dash of the typical British humor. Looking at the list of musicians playing on these two albums one can find such names as John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist (guitar), Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist (drums), Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist (piano), Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist (bass), Peter KingFind albums by this artist (sax), Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Lynn DobsonFind albums by this artist (sax) and many more – a list that reads like a who´s who of the burgeoning late 1960s UK Jazz scene. Fame tackles quite a few vocal standards on these album, many of the great American songbook classics as well as some newer songs by British composers. Overall these two albums are a great example of how great music lasts forever and the 40 years that passed since they were recorded seem to make it even better, given the shape of contemporary music mayhem. Absolutely delightful!

Composer / arranger / bandleader / trombonist Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist was born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). In his early twenties he moved to the US, where he studied both Jazz and Classical music at the Berklee College of Music, the Boston Conservatory and the Tanglewood Institute, where he studied with renowned classical composers Aaron CoplandFind albums by this artist and Lukas FossFind albums by this artist. In 1965 Gibbs settled in London and immediately was absorbed into the burgeoning local Jazz scene, first as a trombonist, and later when he stopped to play the instrument, as a composer, arranger and bandleader. Over the years he assembled an impressive body of work as a composer, which has been considered as some of the most innovative and daring forays into the fusion of Classical, Jazz and Rock. He recorded many of his compositions using large ensembles, which comprised of the best British and later also European Jazz musicians, all of which are considered masterpieces. He also composed music for cinema and created many incredible arrangements for albums in the Rock and Jazz areas. This album combines his two first albums, composed for and performed by huge ensembles including brass, string and rhythm sections and including around 30 musicians. The names of the participants resemble the “who’s who” of the British Jazz scene at the time and the main soloists are: Chris SpeddingFind albums by this artist, Ray RussellFind albums by this artist (guitar), Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, John SurmanFind albums by this artist, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist (sax), Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist (piano), Jack BruceFind albums by this artist, Brian OdgersFind albums by this artist (bass), Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist, John MarshallFind albums by this artist (drums) and many more. The music is quite incredible of course, very difficult to classify, as it flows between genres and musical landscapes disregarding any preconceptions. Gibbs is a master at creating an internal tension in his scores, which is often expressed by the role the brass and rhythm sections play against each other, with the brass section representing the jazzy elements and the rhythm section (especially the guitar) the rock elements. The music is often contemplative and moves slowly, similarly to many of the modern Classical music pieces, influenced obviously by the composer’s teachers and resembling sometimes even the work of Philip GlassFind albums by this artist. Definitely not easy listening, but a highly rewarding intellectual experience. For the lack of a better alternative I’ve decided to classify it under Jazz, but this music is truly beyond classification and constitutes a class of its own. Fascinating!

  | TUBBY HAYES ~ COMMONWEALTH BLUES ART OF LIFE 1016 (Barcode: 804640101628) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1965 Released: 2005
British Jazz legend Tubby HayesFind albums by this artist was one of the greatest representatives of the genre and also one of the very few British musicians to get US exposure due to his frequent performances there. Although primarily revered for his tenor saxophone playing, he was also a superb flautist and vibraphonist. The bulk of recordings come from the period between mid-1950s to mid-1960s. By late 1960s Hayes became seriously ill and subsequently died (in 1973) at a ridiculously young age of 38. His musical legacy is of immense importance, as it laid the foundations for the European Jazz and its emancipation from the American Jazz tradition. His virtuoso playing and extraordinary sense of improvisation enabled Hayes to extend the be-bop tradition, established by Jazz giants like Charlie ParkerFind albums by this artist and John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, into a new plane with added European sophistication and culture replacing the raw energy and often rage of American Jazz. This album is an extremely important document of Tubby’s magnificent performance, especially so due to the fact that it contains all previously unreleased recordings. The source of the music comes from the famous BBC “transcription service” recordings – a blessed initiative of the BBC to record British Jazz and subsequently broadcast these recordings on the BBC World Service stations around the world. These recordings were pressed on vinyl and distributed worldwide, but never released commercially. The album includes four such sessions, recorded for the Spanish-speaking listeners (see the announcements in Spanish) with his quartet, which includes Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist on piano, Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist on bass and Johnny ButtsFind albums by this artist on drums. The first three sessions are devoted each to a separate instrument and feature Hayes on tenor saxophone, vibraphone and flute. The fourth session features his playing all three instruments, each on a separate track. The recording quality is excellent (as is the remaster) and the result is a magnificent album, which deserves the title of a true classic of the British Jazz. The many fans of Tubby Hayes will find this album to be essential for their collections and it deserves a honorable place in any decent Jazz album collection. Genius at work!

  | TONY KINSEY ~ HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING / TIME GENTLEMEN PLEA VOCALION 4262 (Barcode: 765387426224) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1958 - 1963 Released: 2005
British drummer Tony KinseyFind albums by this artist was one of the pillars of the local Jazz scene in the crucial period of late 1950s and early 1960s when British Jazz was absorbing the influences of the American Jazz and transforming them slowly into a new language of European Jazz. Although still very much influenced by American Bebop players, Kinsey and his quintet took the music a step further, replacing the raw energy of Bebop with European sophistication and classic harmony, producing highly intelligent music which was also elegant and although seemingly straight-forward, quite complex at its core. These two albums, from 1963 and 1958 present two of Kinsey´s quintets, both including trumpeter Les CondonFind albums by this artist, but the 1963 quintet includes two young players, which were destined to be crucial figure on the British Jazz scene in the decade that followed, saxophonist Peter KingFind albums by this artist and brilliant pianist Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist. This is great music, richly deserving to be remembered, and this reissue is truly a great opportunity to take a glimpse at this interesting period of early European Jazz. Warmly recommended!

  | TONY OXLEY ~ FEBRUARY PAPERS DISCUS 099 (Barcode: 5051078983028) ~ UK ~ Avant-Garde Jazz Recorded: 1977 Released: 2020
This is a reissue, first time on CD, of an iconic album by British Jazz drummer / composer / bandleader Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven original compositions by Oxley, recorded by three lineups: a quartet with violinists Philipp WachsmannFind albums by this artist and David BourneFind albums by this artist and bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist (two tracks), a trio with Wachsmann and guitarist Ian BrightonFind albums by this artist (two tracks) and finally solo percussion and electronics (three tracks).
Oxley held a pivotal position in British Jazz since the mid 1960s, when he became the house drummer at Ronnie Scott´s club in London, which gave him an opportunity to play with the visiting prominent American Jazz stars and top British Jazz musicians. He was highly respected and always considered as truly extraordinary player, with his own perception of the role of drums within the Jazz idiom, but more importantly the concept of Jazz itself and its transformation into Improvised Music, which was developing at the time. Hearing Oxley performing live was for me always an extraordinary experience, regardless of the circumstances. Even within a most "straightforward" mainstream environment, his drumming was always on a different conceptual plane, although he managed to "keep time" perfectly and without a hitch.
Since the late 1960s Oxley started to be featured on a long series of revolutionary British Jazz albums recorded at the time, many of which remain as absolutely essential examples of modern British Jazz and serve as unsurpassed achievements of that boisterous creative period, like those recorded with Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, John SurmanFind albums by this artist, Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist and others.
His recording career as a leader started in 1969 with the release of two albums for CBSFind albums on this label: "The Baptised TravellerFind albums with this title" (1969) and "4 Compositions For SextetFind albums with this title" (1970), which in retrospect are considered as absolute gems of British Jazz discography. Those were followed by the album "IchnosFind albums with this title" (1971) released on RCAFind albums on this label. Following the disappointment with the major labels, which showed no interest in promoting these albums, Oxley joined guitarist Derek BaileyFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist as co-founder of the IncusFind albums on this label label, which was one of the first independent artist owned labels in Britain. He recorded two albums for the label: the eponymous "Tony OxleyFind albums with this title" (1975) and finally this, his fifth album as a leader "February PapersFind albums with this title" (1977).
The music on this album has nothing to do with Jazz in the conventional meaning of the idiom, but it is a perfectly logical continuation of the musical development that is documented on the four a.m. albums. Oxley breaks the conventional barriers and pushes the envelope towards Avant-Garde, which calls for new forms of expression not related to melody, harmony or even the usual sound expected from the instruments. Such extensive use of electronics was almost completely unheard of at the time of course and although early Improvised Music was already present on the scene, it was rarely as uncompromising and far-fetched as what Oxley decided to capture herein. Although bold spirited, the music offers a delicate, almost intimate sound and allows the listener to absorb every nuance of these performances.
The solo percussion / electronics pieces are of course the most surprising ones here. Improvised music is usually about group improvisation, but Oxley is one of the first improvisers to undertake the daring effort to freely improvise on his own, proving that such form of expression is both possible and valid.
Listening to this album today, with over four decades of perspective, enables me to extend my appreciation of this momentous historic effort from a new angle. Improvised Music is of course alive and kicking today and I am constantly exposed to a huge number of such recordings. I have to say that most of those contemporary efforts sound pretty pale in comparison to what Oxley managed to capture for posterity then. Despite the limited possibilities, surely compared to what is available today as far as electronic devices are concerned, his imagination and creativity remains unchallenged.
Kudos to Martin ArcherFind albums by this artist, the man behind DiscusFind albums on this label Records, for bringing this piece of musical history back to circulation – much appreciated! For Avant-Garde / Improvised Music enthusiasts, this is a Holy Grail!

  | TERRY SMITH ~ FALL OUT SUNBEAM 5008 (Barcode: 5051125500819) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1968 Released: 2006
Guitarist / composer Terry SmithFind albums by this artist was one of the busiest musicians on the British Jazz scene in the late 1960s. Voted the best Jazz guitarist in the 1968 polls, when this album was recorded, Smith was not only playing at the regular Jazz venues around London, but was also a member of the backup group of singer Scott WalkerFind albums by this artist, who was at the peak of his popularity at the time. Walker, although extremely successful as a Pop artists, had a keen musical ear and was trying to get away from the sugary Pop image by employing some of the best Jazz musicians at the time In his band, which was led by no other than the legendary Ronnie ScottFind albums by this artist. Walker used his influence with his label (PhilipsFind albums on this label) to offer a recording opportunity to some of the young and extremely talented musicians in the band, which led to the recording of this debut album by Terry Smith. As this album shows, Smith already had an extraordinary technique and feel for Jazz. Based on the tradition created by players like Kenny BurrellFind albums by this artist and Wes MontgomeryFind albums by this artist, Smith took his guitar work a few steps further adding his personal touch. Of course just a few months later Smith would become one of the founding members of the British Jazz-Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist, which successfully competed with their American counterparts like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist and ChicagoFind albums by this artist. On this album Smith is accompanied by some of the best British Jazz musicians at the time, including Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist on trumpet, Ray WarleighFind albums by this artist on sax and flute, Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist on piano and Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist on bass. Of the eight tracks on this album, three are his originals and the rest standards, beautifully arranged for a big Jazz ensemble. This is an excellent album by all means and it’s great to have it back from oblivion after all these years. Recommended!

  | JOHN TAYLOR SEXTET ~ FRAGMENT JAZZ IN BRITAIN 32 (Barcode: 5060774190326) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1975 Released: 2022
This is a reissue / remaster of the album recorded by the British pianist / composer John TaylorFind albums by this artist and his sextet, which also included trumpeter Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist, trombonist Chris PyneFind albums by this artist, bassist Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony LevinFind albums by this artist. The album was originally released on cassette only on the legendary JaguarFind albums on this label label, owned by pianist / composer Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, all by the leader.
The music is a superb example of the iconoclastic British Jazz, which reached its peak in the mid-1970s after several years of dramatic development, which characterized the scene since the late 1960s. The British Jazz managed to crystalize its very own sound and feel, which was instantly recognizable, even though it encompassed an astonishing variety of musical styles, ranging from almost mainstream / melody based Jazz to extreme Avant Garde. Of course those individuals / ensembles, which knew how to embrace both the charm of a beautiful melody and the powerful expressiveness of complex improvisation, like the sextet present on this recording, were the most effective.
The six individuals playing here were all top British Jazz Artists at the time, each with his own rich legacy already in place by the time this music was recorded. It was an “all stars” ensemble by any standard, but of course there was nothing extraordinary about it, as almost every other ensemble on the scene at the time could be also acknowledged as an “all stars” gathering, since the scene was literally exploding with talent and activity.
Over the years John Taylor created an immense body of Jazz compositions and an extensive recorded legacy, which reflect his sublime ability to weave an intricate, yet romantic melody. His life-long cooperation with Wheeler, widely documented on record, was one of the most fruitful Jazz engines in retrospect, but no Taylor discography could be complete without this particular album, which for so many years remained a hidden secret shared by the British Jazz fanatics. The fact that it is now reissued is a true milestone for the excellent Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, which never ceases to surprise and delight those of us, who truly love this music.
Overall, this is a monumental release as far as British Jazz is concerned, closing a major gap in so many record collections of dedicated fans, all of which are both happy and grateful. The great talent of Taylor, the superb performances by Wheeler and the rest of the sextet members, and most importantly the everlasting magic of the music, which is every bit as fresh as it was at the time it was recorded, all come together to create a “crown jewel” of an album, which no British Jazz fan can ignore. Thank you Gentlemen for your labor of love, which we all enjoy.

  | CLARK TERRY ~ CLARK AFTER DARK MPS 4029759115700 (Barcode: 4029759115700) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1977 Released: 2016
This is a reissue of an album by American trumpeter / composer and flugelhorn pioneer Clark TerryFind albums by this artist, which was his second of two albums for MPSFind albums on this label and which was produced by the British music critic / producer Mike HennesseyFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten Jazz ballads, nine of which are standards and one, which was written especially for this album by the German trombonist / bandleader / arranger / composer Peter HerbolzheimerFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded in London and features a mind-blowing huge orchestra, which includes the absolute crème de la crème of the British Jazz musicians, which does not appear on any other recording, and as such is absolutely unique. Some of the names include trumpeters: Derek WatkinsFind albums by this artist, Tony FisherFind albums by this artist and Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, trombonists: Dave HorlerFind albums by this artist and Nat PeckFind albums by this artist, reed players: Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist, Tony CoeFind albums by this artist and Ronnie RossFind albums by this artist, pianist Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist, guitarist Martin KershawFind albums by this artist, bassist Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist and many others.
The music is definitely on the lighter side of Jazz, but Terry´s brilliant technique and enormous feel are definitely worth hearing. But the real hidden gem on this album is the brilliant performance by the orchestra and the superb arrangements. It is an exceptional example of the artistry of orchestration and of course the actual execution of the sophisticated arrangements by a group of immensely talented players. For British Jazz connoisseurs this is a rare gem, which is know by very few members of the proud community.
As usual with reissues, it is great to have this gem back in circulation, for new generation of fans to discover and for those who lost the copy of the original vinyl issue to re-discover past pleasures. May the Force be with you! Side Note The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.
In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.
Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.
In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.
Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.
