  | ANDERSON PONTY BAND ~ BETTER LATE THAN NEVER EAR MUSIC 4029759106517 (Barcode: 4029759106517) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2014 - 2015 Released: 2015
This is the only album by the rather strange hybrid band featuring Progressive Rock vocalist Jon AndersonFind albums by this artist (of YesFind albums by this artist fame) and French violin virtuoso and Fusion superstar Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist. The album was basically recorded live during the band’s debut concert in the US, with the guitar parts overdubbed later in the studio. Additional musicians include guitarist Jamie GlaserFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Wally MinkoFind albums by this artist, bassist Baron BrowneFind albums by this artist and drummer Rayford GriffinFind albums by this artist. The album presents fourteen tracks, which include original Yes songs in new arrangements, as wells as music composed by Ponty with new lyrics added by Anderson.
The band toured for a couple of years in North America and was favorably received at the time, but in retrospect the music did not age well as far as my ears are concerned. Although Anderson is certainly a great vocalist and Ponty a superb violinist, the music was on the extreme easy side of both Prog and Fusion and is today quite forgettable.
Overall, although headed by two music veterans of considerable talent, the resulting music is sort of “not here and not there”, as the saying goes, and leaves few memorable moments. Of course these are excellent musicians and the album has its moments, and both Anderson and Ponty die-hard fans would definitely keep this album in their collections.

  | WOLFGANG DAUNER ~ FREE ACTION PROMISING MUSIC 44105 (Barcode: 602517554993) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1967 Released: 2008
German pianist / composer Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist was one of the most important forefathers of European Jazz. A prolific composer, bandleader and activist, his contribution to the establishment of European Jazz and its emancipation from the restrains of the American Jazz tradition is truly immense. Dauner, who in addition to his musical activities, was also a prolific painter, always looked at music as an expression of an overall aesthetic / cultural point of view, with philosophical / social and even political undercurrents. Over the years Dauner created a most impressive body of work, encompassing many quite different styles and directions, spanning straightforward (but always unique) Jazz, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Free Jazz and Improvised Music.
In the mid-1970s Dauner formed the revolutionary United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist – a multi-national group of superb European players, which brought Jazz-Rock Fusion to a level of absolute Art. He also co-founded the independent MoodFind albums on this label Records label, which for many years documented some of the most important and unconventional European music (mostly Jazz). His early recordings on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label (as leader and sideman) are in retrospect perhaps the most important from the historical point of view, as they demonstrate the boldness, inspiration and urge to explore uncharted musical territories.
Encouraged and supported by the legendary Jazz critic and resident MPS producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, Dauner could freely express his visions, regardless how bold they might be, especially at the time. For this recording Dauner formed a septet, which included some of his regular cohorts like cellist / bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and American (but living in Germany) drummer Fred BracefulFind albums by this artist. He added three excellent German young players: saxophonist Gerd DudekFind albums by this artist (who would later become one of the central figures of German Improvised Music and Free Jazz), bassist Jurgen KargFind albums by this artist and drummer / tabla player Mani NeumeierFind albums by this artist (later a member of the legendary Guru GuruFind albums by this artist group). As the last member of the septet Dauner selected the then little known French virtuoso violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, who was of course destined to achieve worldwide recognition later on.
The septet performs five of Dauner’s compositions, which provide a skeletal framework for group improvisations by the band members. The double bass / drums lineup allows for complex rhythmic patterns to evolve, and of course there is plenty of space for individual solo spots, but overall the music is mostly a group effort, Dauner uses “prepared piano” (i.e. differently tuned one) to achieve some novel sound approach. In retrospect this is a superb document of the birth of European Jazz, which takes the Free Jazz idiom and pushes it (here still ever so gently) into the Improvised Music realm. The music lost none of its power and inspiration over the years and for a “first time” listener should be quite an ear opener. Kudos to Promising MusicFind albums on this label for the excellent remaster and elegant packaging of the reissue. A must!

  | WOLFGANG DAUNER ~ MUSIC ZOUNDS (MOST PERFECT SOUND EDITION) MPS 9808190 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1970
German pianist / composer Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist is one the most important icons of the European jazz scene. Active since the early 1960’s he has been in the epicenter of the European free jazz since the mid-1960’s and then in the mid-1970’s he also expanded his activities to the jazz-rock scene by forming (with other excellent European jazz musicians) the United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist. In the last two decades he concentrates on writing film music.
The piano trio, which is playing on this 1970 album, existed for several years prior to this recording, playing mostly free oriented music. Therefore, upon its release Dauner’s followers were completely taken by surprised by the music, which is a classic swinging jazz, almost a parody of swing if you wish. Obviously Dauner wanted to have a joyful, amusing look at the “middle of the road” jazz, which he does lovingly of course. Although at the first impression this music might sound as something done by George ShearingFind albums by this artist, in fact it is quite experimental and sophisticated. On top of the metronome swinging rhythm, Dauner and his phenomenal bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist perform some really hair-rising musical acrobatics. Weber wrote most of the material for this album, in addition to a couple of standards and one tune by his friend, the French violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist.
When asked at the time if this album wouldn’t be in contradiction to his Avant-Garde principles, he answered: “No, I’m not narrow-minded, and I never was. I don’t care what people say about me. The main thing is that the music is good and we all dig it.” I must say I absolutely concur to that statement. This is surely one of the most “good fun” jazz albums ever recorded. Side Note The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.
In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.
Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.
In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.
Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

  | GEORGE DUKE ~ FACES IN REFLECTION PROMISING MUSIC 44103 (Barcode: 602517546479) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1973 Released: 2008
American keyboardist / composer George DukeFind albums by this artist first came to prominence in the late 1960s, when he recorded with the French violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, who was invited to record in the US following his festival appearances. The association with Ponty opened quite a few doors for Duke, eventually leading to his stint with Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, as well as his recording contract with the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label. He recorded 8 albums for the label between 1971 and 1976, of which this was the 3rd. Duke was a strange choice for MPS, as it concentrated mainly on presenting the European Jazz scene (the only exception was a series of albums recorded by Oscar PetersonFind albums by this artist), with strong Avant-Garde and later European Jazz-Rock Fusion, which was much more advanced that its American counterpart. Although Duke was closely associated with the US Jazz-Rock Fusion scene in the 1970s, playing with such prominent musicians like Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist, Billy CobhamFind albums by this artist and many others, his Fusion approach was strongly based on Blues, Funk and Soul, his “native” musical areas. Therefore his MPS recordings can be considered as some of the most commercial and accessible recordings ever released by this label. On this album Duke uses a trio (John HeardFind albums by this artist – bass and Leon Ndugu ChanclerFind albums by this artist – drums) and plays a wide array of synthesizers. He composed all but one of the tunes (the only composition, which isn’t his is by the Brazilian genius Milton NascimentoFind albums by this artist, and points towards Duke’s fascination with Brazilian music, which would flourish later in his career). There is no doubt about Duke’s brilliant technique as a player and his use of synthesizers is revolutionary at that time, but the compositions are definitely on the lighter side of Jazz and his vocals (however sparsely used) completely unnecessary. As much as I like Duke’s playing and many of his recordings, this is not one of his absolute highlights, even if it is much better that most of his later recordings starting from the 1980s and up to now. Nevertheless it is still a solid and enjoyable album worthy of being remembered. Of course many of his fans will enjoy this quality reissue with beautifully remastered sound and superb packaging.

  | GEORGE DUKE ~ MY SOUL–THE COMPLETE MPS FUSION RECORDINGS(MOST PERFECT SOUND EDITION) MPS 751504 (Barcode: 602517515048) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1971 - 1976 Released: 2008
US keyboardist George DukeFind albums by this artist is one of the most colorful and versatile figures on the Jazz-Rock Fusion scene. His career stretches ways back to the mid-1960s and lasts to this very day. Starting as a classic Jazz pianist, Duke gradually moved from straightforward Jazz into Jazz-Rock Fusion, abandoning the acoustic piano in favor of the electric one and later adding a myriad of synthesizers to his workshop. His stints with Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist (twice) and Cannonball AdderleyFind albums by this artist (where he replaced Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist) in his formative years influenced his musical path tremendously and it was Zappa who pushed him towards using synthesizers and exploring new musical vistas.
Duke’s development and gradual change of style and musical vocabulary was brilliantly captured on his recordings for the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label. His connection with MPS was quite accidental and recording for a small European label was quite unusual for US Artists at the time, but in retrospect Duke couldn’t have made a better decision, as the label allowed him total artistic freedom, which was almost impossible to achieve on the US scene. He recorded a total of nine albums for MPS, seven of which are collected in this superb Box Set.
His first recording for MPS dating from 1966 was still very much a classic Jazz affair, which stylistically does not belong to his Fusion period, was not included here (perhaps a correct decision as far as the title goes, but as it is still unavailable on CD, it would be nice to have it reissued as well). The last recording for MPS, a solo keyboards project, is also omitted, for contractual bullshit reasons, as it caused a big legal dispute at the time, with Duke changing labels from MPS to EpicFind albums on this label. That album was reissued as “The 1976 Solo Keyboard AlbumFind albums with this title” on the Wounded BirdFind albums on this label label (the original MPS title was “The DreamFind albums with this title”).
However, the remaining seven albums (“SolusFind albums with this title” and “The Inner SourceFind albums with this title”, which were released together as a double LP, “Faces In ReflectionFind albums with this title”, “FeelFind albums with this title”, “I Love The Blues, She Heard Me CryFind albums with this title”, “The Aura Will PrevailFind albums with this title” and “Liberated FantasiesFind albums with this title”) recorded between April 1971 and January 1976 are included in their entirety, beautifully remastered. These four CDs include such an immense amount of music, which is so versatile stylistically and conceptually, that it constitutes a tremendous and essential document of the era.
As far as Duke’s playing and even more importantly his compositional skills, this is a beautiful portrait of an Artist, which every fan and music lover will cherish. The players on the sessions present here constitute a long list of some of the best Jazz and Fusion musicians active at the time, too long to be included here. For the inquisitive listeners let me just mention that even Frank Zappa is present (albeit incognito) on two tracks, as are many members of his Mothers Of InventionFind albums by this artist. There is something for everyone here and overall this Box Set is one unadulterated, intense plateful of fun and musical ingenuity. Absolutely essential! | GEORGE DUKE ~ THE 1976 SOLO KEYBOARD ALBUM WOUNDED BIRD 8208 (Barcode: 664140820821) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1976 Released: 2004
Keyboards player George DukeFind albums by this artist has always been one of my favorite musicians, mainly due to his phenomenal achievements during the first decade of his career. His early piano trio recordings (mid 1960s), his work with Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist (late 1960s) and finally his stint with Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist (early to mid 1970s) are all examples of pure genius and incredible musical versatility. Unfortunately by the end of the 1970s Duke phased out gradually from his jazz and fusion oriented activities and moved into pop, mostly as a producer. His recordings sine then bear little resemblance to the glory of his early days. During the 1970s Duke recorded a series of revolutionary and groundbreaking albums for the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label (sadly mostly not available on CD), which showcased his exemplary jazz-rock / fusion wizardry. This album, his first completely solo recording, was the last of these MPS recordings, released under the title “The Dream”. Duke re-mixed the album in 1980 and in 1982 it was released in the US on the EpicFind albums on this label label under this new title. Unavailable for many years, here it is finally back in circulation. The music, all composed by Duke, is a set of beautifully crafted melodies, played by an array of keyboards, sounding like an entire ensemble. Absolutely brilliant and timeless piece of music!

American violinist Don Sugarcane HarrisFind albums by this artist was one of the very few great Blues / Rock / Fusion artists playing the fiddle. He came to prominence as a member of the revolutionary John MayallFind albums by this artist’s BluesbreakersFind albums by this artist group and later as a member of Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist’s groups. This album, recorded live during the Berliner Jazztage Festival, presents Harris both as a leader and a participant in the legendary “Violin Summit” super-group, assembled by producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. The solo appearance is in fact an offshoot project of the “Violin Summit”, which was a series of recordings on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label, which celebrated the role of the violin in Jazz, Blues, Jazz-Rock Fusion and Rock and produced probably the most interesting document of music by violinists in the late 1960s / 1970s. The “Violin Summit” projects were based on a concept of a rhythm section and a series of violinist playing solo and in various combinations. The 1971 version of “Violin Summit”, which produced the “New Violin SummitFind albums with this title” double album, included also such great violin players as Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist (France), Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist (Poland) and Nipso BrantnerFind albums by this artist (Germany) – none of them is heard here – and a fantastic rhythm section consisting of the Norwegian guitarist Terje RypdalFind albums by this artist, German keyboardist Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist, New Zealander (resident in UK at the time) bassist Neville WhiteheadFind albums by this artist and British drummer Robert WyattFind albums by this artist. On the solo night Rypdal is replaced by German guitarist Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist. Surrounded by such illustrious musicians, Harris plays his heart out, improvising more daringly than ever before, no doubt inspired by the incredible performances by his European partners, who were musically much more advanced that Harris’ usual American companions. Overall the album presents a great event captured for posterity, with some amazing musical moments documenting the formation of the European Jazz-Rock Fusion, which bridges between such distant genres as the Blues and Free Jazz with elegance and vision. Beautifully remastered and packaged, this album is definitely worth investigation and attentive listening.

  | ALEKSANDRA KUTRZEPA ~ IMPRESSIONS NOT ON LABEL ~ POLAND ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2018 Released: 2018
This is the debut album by Polish Jazz violinist / composer Aleksandra KutrzepaFind albums by this artist recorded in a quartet setting with guitarist Bartlomiej GarczynskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Michal StudniarekFind albums by this artist and drummer Robert KutrzepaFind albums by this artist. Vocalist Anna GadtFind albums by this artist and pianist Patryk CzyzewskiFind albums by this artist appear as guests on selected tracks. The album presents eight original compositions, all by Alexandra Kutrzepa.
The music offers a series of contemporary Polish Jazz compositions, full of lyricism, melancholy and even romanticism, all developing slowly and based on solid melodic themes. Stylistically the music displays a strong touch of Fusion, especially when the guitar is featured up front, but also due to the unique sound and manner of playing the violin that Kutrzepa utilizes, which has strong ties with the French Fusion violin school (Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist / Didier LockwoodFind albums by this artist) rather than with the Polish Jazz violin school (Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist / Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist).
As already mentioned above, Kutrzepa manages to achieve a unique and very personal violin sound and mannerism, which is quite different from the numerous other young generation Polish Jazz violin players, and which is quite remarkable by itself. She is very aloof, minimalist and reserved creating incredible tension and anticipation, which is extremely effective.
The rest of the players on the album are all highly professional and talented. Garczynski serves as a contrast to Kutrzepa´s laid-back phrasing with his energetic and expressive solos, like a musical cold-hot or yin-yang seesaw. The rhythm section supports the soloists amicably and displays inventive and fully responsible ensemble playing, always solid and reliable. The guests add spice and panache to the proceedings, as expected, with Gadt taking the music slightly towards more imaginary ground on the last track with her beautiful vocal contributions. Personally this is my favorite piece on the album and perhaps points towards the direction the music might take in the future.
Overall this is an excellent debut offering, obviously well planned and rehearsed, original and ambitious, and most importantly offering elements previously unheard and exploring uncharted territory, which after all happens quite rarely. For lovers of intelligent Fusion this album is a true gem and should not be missed, and judging by the potential it displays, Kutrzepa is definitely a Lady to keep a close watch on, both as a composer and a player, which I definitely intend to do in the future, wishing her all the best on the way.

  | DIDIER LOCKWOOD ~ GLOBE-TROTTER UNIVERSAL 602498093245 (Barcode: 602498093245) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2003 Released: 2003
This is a wonderful double album by veteran French violinist / composer Didier LockwoodFind albums by this artist, one of the Masters of the French Jazz Violin School. The first CD presents Lockwood in a quartet setting with organist Benoit SourisseFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Stephane GuillaumeFind albums by this artist and drummer Andre CharlierFind albums by this artist and a few guest artists. Together they perform ten original compositions, five by Lockwood, three by Sourisse and one each by Guillaume and Charlier. The second CD presents seventeen short pieces performed on solo violin, all composed by Lockwood.
The music is strongly influenced by World Music elements, as suggested by the album´s title, and incorporates both melodic and rhythmic ingredients from many different folk sources. Everything is executed with typical French elegance and finesse and Lockwood proves that he is still at the top of his creative powers. The typical French sound of violin and Hammond organ, which was born with the early Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist´s trio with Eddy LouissFind albums by this artist on organ in the late 1960s, is still one of the most exciting and aesthetically fulfilling approaches in European Jazz and Lockwood skillfully repeats that approach here.
The solo violin pieces are a delightful journey into the world of solo violin. The pieces were recorded live during Lockwood´s performances on the stages around the world and collected here to be presented as a kaleidoscope of musical pieces influenced by many different places and Cultures. Lockwood uses synthesizers and other electronic devices to accompany him on these pieces, but they are essentially solo violin performances, which are all cleanly breathtaking. This CD is simply a text book of modern violin playing and should be studied by all young musicians learning to play that instrument.
This is definitely a most gratifying album in every respect and an absolute must for the Jazz violin fans and all lovers of European Jazz at its best.

  | NEW TRIO ~ PERPENDICULAR REALITIES TMP 004 (Barcode: 5903292104850) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2011 Released: 2013
This is the second album by the New TrioFind albums by this artist ensemble, which consists of Polish brothers: Jan SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist, who plays Hammond organ and composed most of the music herein and Mateusz SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist, who plays violin and is completed by Russian drummer Alex ZingerFind albums by this artist. The album includes twelve original compositions, seven of which were composed by Jan and the remaining five are credited to all the trio members.
Aesthetically the music continues exactly from the point where their stunning debut left off and presents more of the same unique sound, which exists only within the particular Hammond / violin / drums setting and which has but a few predecessors, most of which are French, where the violin has a firm position as a leading Jazz instrument. The superb Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist / Eddy LouissFind albums by this artist / Daniel HumairFind albums by this artist trio immediately comes to mind as a point of reference. The same "retro" atmosphere, which characterized the debut album, is maintained here as well. The result however losses the surprise effect, that exemplified the reaction to the debut.
But surprised or not, the listeners will find here all the ingredients that make music great and worth listening to: superb compositions and first-class performances. Although well within the Jazz mainstream this music keeps the listener on edge, never being obvious or overtly predictable, with intellectual and emotional approaches intertwined. The diverse tempi enable showcases of different compositional tools, which work out very effectively.
As for performances, this album is full of exceptional playing with the violin work by Mateusz being simply virtuosic from start to finish. He is quickly establishing himself as one of the leading violinist not only in Poland, but now also on a worldwide scale and is surely destined to get far. But both Jan and Alex don´t fall far behind and their contributions are first-rate every step of the way.
Overall this is a splendid piece of music and a commendable follow up to their debut effort. Having passed the dreaded "second album" trial with flying colors, they now have a carte blanche to continue this path as far as I´m concerned. Both Jazz violin and Hammond organ connoisseurs will absolutely love this album from start to finish and it is wholeheartedly recommended to every Jazz enthusiast.
We must not forget also the fact that Jan Smoczynski is not only a great musician, but also one of the top (if not the top) sound engineers in Poland and his legendary Studio Tokarnia, where this album was recorded, is one of the best in Europe and produced a myriad of albums of extraordinary sound quality. Hats off!

  | NEW TRIO ~ SIMULTANEOUS ABSTRACTIONS TMP 003 (Barcode: 5905912558340) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2009 Released: 2010
This is one of those unexpected albums, which fall on your head like a sledgehammer… The album was recorded by a Polish trio, which calls itself rather ambiguously New TrioFind albums by this artist, and consists of brothers: Mateusz SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist – violin and Jan SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist – Hammond organ and drummer Alex ZingerFind albums by this artist. I admit being a little puzzled by the "new" part of their name, but a couple of minutes into the music made everything abundantly clear; they are a new / updated version of the fabulous 1960s French trio, which included violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, organist Eddy LouissFind albums by this artist and drummer Daniel HumairFind albums by this artist. That revolutionary trio, one of the great precursors of European Jazz, which combined the art of improvisation with the great European music tradition, serves as a model for New Trio, not only in its instrumental lineup, but also stylistically and sonically, as the album presents a wonderful "retro" sound, typical of the great 1960s recordings.
Of course the music is all new and almost entirely original, composed mostly by the organist, with a couple of tracks being co-composed by all three members and one standard – a breathtaking redemption of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist´s "Naima". The music is absolutely brilliant, admittedly not very adventurous, but with great melody lines, well developed themes and interesting rhythmic variations.
The performances are excellent as well, with all three musicians being obvious virtuosi on their respective instruments and the trio being blessed with great rapport and telepathic mind-reading between its members. Of course the sound of violin is capable of melting even the iciest of hearts, and is used here with passion but also with great taste, not "overdoing it" on the sentimental side. The Hammond, one of my most beloved instruments, is the basis of all this music and with slightly enhanced sonic capabilities proves its vitality and enormous rage of possibilities, which should be envied by any of the modern / electronic keyboard super-machines. The drums bear an enormous responsibility in this music, providing both the rhythmic backbone and the wonderful ornamentation, without being overzealous.
In short, this music is just perfect the way it is, which happens unfortunately quite rarely. Of course there is also the "Polish connection" in the background, especially the Polish Jazz violin tradition, which must have had its influence here. Therefore an attentive listener will be able to catch glimpses of Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist and Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist in this music, but only symbolically and never used overtly as plagiarisms. I urge every Jazz lover to get hold of this wonderful album pronto, especially those of you who love violin and / or the Hammond organ. This is an invigorating, intelligent and beautiful piece of music, which should be enjoyed by as many music lovers as possible. A must!

  | MATEUSZ PLINIEWICZ ~ WARSZTAT DZWIEKU POLSKIE RADIO 2055 (Barcode: 5907812249670) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016
This is the debut album by young Polish Jazz violinist Mateusz PliniewiczFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with keyboardist Nikola KolodziejczykFind albums by this artist, bassist Marcin JadachFind albums by this artist and drummer Szymon MadejFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded live in the Polish Radio Lutoslawski Studio (in Warsaw) and presents eleven original compositions, seven of which were composed by Pliniewicz, two were co-composed by all four quartet members, and one each was composed by Jadach and Kolodziejczyk.
The music is not focused stylistically and moves between melodic mainstream pieces and more adventurous / atmospheric vistas, but is overall quite original and interesting. The strongest compositions are soaked in the typical Polish melancholy, which is a trademark of Polish Jazz since many years. The music develops very slowly and sometimes sounds a bit hesitant, but eventually the beauty of the melodies wins the listener over, even if he has to wait for it for a long while.
Pliniewicz plays beautifully and movingly, somewhat "old fashioned" like early Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, but with great charm and feeling. Kolodziejczyk supports the violin amicably and plays several well built solos. His acoustic piano playing is perfectly compatible with the overall atmosphere of the music, but his synthesizer parts sound somewhat out of place. The rhythm section does a good job pushing the music forward and setting the rhythmic layer behind the acoustic sound of the violin and piano, without dominating it. Jadach plays several interesting bass parts and is certainly worth following. Madej, who plays the drums also for another great young Polish Jazz violinist Bartosz DworakFind albums by this artist, is perfectly at home in this setting.
Overall this is a very impressive debut, which brings to light another hero of the Polish Jazz violin, which in turn seems to enjoy a great renaissance lately. I am looking forward to the first "proper" studio album, which hopefully will fulfill all the hopes this album manages to raise. Well done!

  | JEAN-LUC PONTY ~ AURORA WOUNDED BIRD 8163 (Barcode: 664140816329) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1975 Released: 2006
The extraordinary talents of the French violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist stretch over a magnificent career, which started in the 1960s and continues to this very day. His impact on the role of violin in modern music (jazz & fusion) is unparalleled and his compositional skills are equally impressive. The most important aspect of his contribution to music is his ability to mix his European lyricism with American rhythmic patterns, creating a unique amalgam of contemporary sound. Since the late 1960s Ponty was active on the US scene as member of Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist’s Mothers Of InventionFind albums by this artist and then John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist’s Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, where he contributed to the creation of the definitive Jazz-Rock Fusion foundations. While still a member of Mahavishnu Orchestra (1975) Ponty formed his own group and started recording a long series of brilliant albums for the AtlanticFind albums on this label label, of which this is the 2nd. With the help of brilliant musicians like Partice RushenFind albums by this artist on keyboards and Tom FowlerFind albums by this artist on bass (ex-Zappa) Ponty managed to give birth to a perfect Fusion album, which is as relevant today as it was on the day of its creation. He wrote all the music, which includes some of the most memorable melodies the genre was blessed with. The performances are also perfect in every respect and all in all this is one of Fusion’s cornerstones and an absolute must.

  | JEAN-LUC PONTY ~ ELECTRIC CONNECTION / KING KONG GOTT DISCS 014 ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
1969 & 1970 albums by the phenomenal French violin virtuoso Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist. Ponty`s violin playing comes from a long and distinguished line of great jazz violinists, starting with Stephane GrappelliFind albums by this artist. After several years of playing jazz with the top players in his native France, Ponty arrived in the US first in 1967 for the Monterey Jazz Festival workshop, where his incredible talent was spotted immediately. He was invited to the US to record a series of albums with the collaboration of the (then) young pianist George DukeFind albums by this artist and arranger / bandleader Gerald WilsonFind albums by this artist. Leter he was to meet and play with Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist. Ponty`s visionary use of the electric violin, which was one of the earliest and formative factors in the development of Jazz-Rock Fusion, is beautifully documented here. The first album finds Ponty in the familiar jazz environment, where he is accompanied by a Big Band, but the fresh approach and use of electric instuments is Fusion at birth. The second album however, arranged especially for Ponty by the Master Frank Zappa himself, is revolutionary in every sense. The compositions (5 by Zappa and 1 by Ponty), the arrangements and the brilliant performances are years ahead of their time and pure musical brilliance. Absolute masterpiece!

  | JEAN-LUC PONTY ~ FABLES WOUNDED BIRD 8276 (Barcode: 664140827622) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1985 Released: 2006
12th and last album for Atlantic, at least for a while, as he returned to record for the label again a decade later. Ponty returns to the group format, this time as quartet with the excellent Scott Henderson on guitar. With a full rhythm section behind him the music is closer to the usual Fusion form, but the synthesizer layers are still present, created by Henderson using the guitar-synthesizer. A great set of melodies, all by Ponty of course, and some fiery performances make this another addition to his outstanding legacy, which is cherished by his numerous fans, yours truly included.

  | JEAN-LUC PONTY ~ INDIVIDUAL CHOICE WOUNDED BIRD 8098 (Barcode: 664140809826) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1983 Released: 2006
Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist’s 10th album for AtlanticFind albums on this label, which marks a radical change in his approach to music, expressed mainly in his extensive use of electronic sounds (as opposed to his earlier use of acoustic or electric violin). Using a complex array of synthesizers and other devices Ponty creates sonic vistas of great beauty and depth. Mind you the Fusion spirit is still very much there and no danger whatsoever of New Age senseless monotony – this is highly spirited music of great value. Although Ponty is by far the main performer, he does use a few supporting musicians like old buddy George DukeFind albums by this artist on mini-moog or Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist on guitar. As usual Ponty wrote all the music presented here and again he managed to come up with some formidable melodies, which lost none of their charm over the years. A must for all JLP fans and people with taste.

This is a reissue of an album by French Jazz violinist / composer Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, recorded in his home studio using various synthesizers, which expanded his violin sound to create a more orchestral ambience. Several additional musicians were invited to play on selected tracks, including bassist Guy Nsangue AkwaFind albums by this artist, percussionist Moustapha CisseFind albums by this artist, drummer Thierry ArpinoFind albums by this artist and pianist William LecomteFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten tracks, all composed by Ponty.
The album offers the usual highly melodic musical themes, given a modern, almost Ambient makeup, and supported by African rhythmic lines, which are, as usual, highly effective and immediately “likeable”, despite the fact that the music is by far not trivial or simplistic. On the contrary, some of these melody lines are deeply introspect and reflective and offer an emotional depth.
Overall, this is another excellent offering by Ponty, who never recorded anything below excellent, regardless the specific genre he was involved with at a time. This is a minimalist, somewhat Ambient sounding album, which lost nothing of its beauty over time and still offers some highly aesthetic and reflective music, perhaps less exciting than his earlier Fusion effort, but definitely no less rewarding.

Guitarist Kevin EubanksFind albums by this artist guests on one track. The album presents ten tracks, all composed by Ponty.
The music is, as expected, an amalgam of beautiful melodies and African rhythms, offering a splendid Jazz-World Fusion atmosphere. Ponty utilizes electronics to multiply the layers of sound he produces, and his violin work is as charming as always. This album, originally released in 1993, is a continuation of the previous album “TchokolaFind albums with this title”, released a couple years earlier, which also included African musicians.
Overall, this is a wonderful piece of music, sadly much less popular than the early albums by Ponty, but definitely worth digging out. The new remastered sound quality as absolutely stunning and giving the album another chance is a great idea. If you don’t have a copy from thirty years ago, now is the time!

11th album for Atlantic and a conceptual follow up to its predecessor. This is essentially another solo effort with Ponty creating layers of sound using various synthesizers and then soloing and improvising on top. Chick Corea guests on two tunes and George Benson on another one, but the album is perhaps the most personal and intimate affair Ponty recorded at that period. The music, as usual all written by him, bears the distinct qualities of Ponty’s lyricism and European serenity, but remains focused and fascinating. Definitely a gentler side of Fusion, recommended to attentive listeners. JLP fans will of course love this to bits.

This magnificent album by French virtuoso violinist / composer Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist is a great example of European Jazz at its best. The quintet, which recorded this album was Ponty´s regular group at the time, called ExperienceFind albums by this artist, and comprised of brilliant Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, German pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and American rhythm section: bassist Peter WarrenFind albums by this artist and drummer Oliver JohnsonFind albums by this artist. Ponty´s previous MPSFind albums on this label album "Sunday WalkFind albums with this title", recorded 4 years earlier, exposed Ponty´s revolutionary approach to his instrument, but this recording shows how much and how fast he advanced, moving from mainstream Jazz towards much more adventurous surroundings, often including Free, improvised passages. Of course his incredible sense of melody is still present, albeit subtly hidden sometimes. Ponty composed four of the five tunes (the first three are parts of a suite, which occupied Side A of the original LP). The last tune is composed by Kuhn. The playing is phenomenal all the way, both in the more melodic and the completely Free parts, perfectly summarizing the first period of Ponty´s musical journey. Not too long after recording this album Ponty will change his musical direction and create his own admirable brand of Fusion, which will bring him fame and international exposure. But this particular album remains his most notable Jazz achievement. Produced by the legendary Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, this is a must to all European Jazz fans and particularly those who love the violin. A classic!

  | JEAN-LUC PONTY ~ SUNDAY WALK MPS 4029759171379 (Barcode: 4029759171379) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz Recorded: 1967 Released: 2021
This is a reissue / remaster on an early album by French violinist / composer Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with a European quartet, which also included German pianist Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist, Danish bassist Niels-Henning Orsted PedersenFind albums by this artist and Swiss drummer Daniel HumairFind albums by this artist. The album presents five tracks, one each by Ponty, Dauner and Humair, one by American composer Denny Zeitlin and one standard. The recording was initiated by my Friend and Mentor, the producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, who wrote the liner notes for the original album, which are respectfully included in this album’s artwork.
At this early stage of his career, Ponty was already recognized as a great talent and continuator of the French violin Jazz school, following in the footsteps of Stephane GrappelliFind albums by this artist. But Ponty was not a mere keeper of the tradition, as his improvisation was close to John ColtraneFind albums by this artist and his musical path was about to include stints with Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist and other pioneers of Jazz-Rock Fusion, who established the genre.
The three partners Ponty selected to accompany him on this album were also, despite their young age, already amongst Europe’s most seasoned and talented young musicians. The immediate perfect rapport between the quartet members is evident from the very onset of the music and lasts unbroken till the very last note.
The original material is certainly as good, and in fact better than any standard the quartet might have picked to perform together, and the talents of all three composers was about to flourish for years to come. Although Orsted Pederson died in 2005 and Dauner in 2020, Ponty and Humair continue their brilliant careers now, fifty-five years after this classic gem was recorded.
Overall, this is one of the greatest gems of early European modern Jazz and a classic album in every respect, which has but a few equals over time. The fact that it is finally available on CD should make countless fans of violin Jazz ecstatically happy. This is an absolute must in every serious Jazz record collection.

Guitarist Pat ThomiFind albums by this artist plays on several tracks. The album presents eight tracks, all original compositions by Ponty. Ponty plays violin, Synclavier and electronic devices. The music is a mixture of Fusion and Ambient.
“StorytellingFind albums with this title” from 1989 was the second album on Columbia. It was recorded in a quintet setting with Browne, Griffin, guitarist Jamie GlaserFind albums by this artist and keyboardist Wally MinkoFind albums by this artist. A few guest musicians appear on selected tracks. The album presents nine tracks, eight of which are original compositions by Ponty and one is his interpretation of a Classical piece. The music follows a similar pattern to that found on the preceding album, mixing Fusion and more contemporary Ambient an even Techno influences.
“TchokolaFind albums with this title” from 1991 was the third and last album on Columbia. It was recorded with several West African musicians and offers a Jazz-World Fusion project, which explores the rich rhythmic background of that region. The album presents ten tracks, all composed by Ponty or co-composed by him and the musicians playing on the album. The music is very different from everything Ponty created earlier on, showing his artistic diversity and constant passion to discover new musical ventures.
Overall, this is a great opportunity to discover these three album, which escaped many of Ponty’s fans, who loved his earlier Jazz and Fusion oriented albums, but stopped following his recordings by the time these albums were released. Most warmly recommended!

  | JEAN-LUC PONTY & WOLFGANG DAUNER ~ LIVE AT THE BERN JAZZ FESTIVAL 2011 MPS 4029759171393 (Barcode: 4029759171393) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz Recorded: 2011 Released: 2022
This is an archival live album by the duo comprising of French violinist / composer Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist and German pianist / composer Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight tracks, four composed by Dauner, three by Ponty and one is a medley of standards. Six tracks are violin / piano duets and one each are violin / piano soli.
Ponty and Dauner met in the late 1960s and performed together often at the time. When Ponty moved to the US, the connection was broken for a long time, and was renewed only in the mid-1990s, when they formed a duo together, which was recorded some years later at the Bern Festival by Swiss Radio. Following Dauner’s death in 2020, Ponty pushed for this performance to be released, and this is the result.
Both Ponty and Dauner are Giants of European Jazz, each active in his own sphere, both originating in traditional Jazz but later on pushing the boundaries of the genre in different sub-genres. Ponty moved directly into Jazz-Rock Fusion and Dauner flirted with Avant-Garde Jazz and later on also with Fusion, both being formidable instrumentalists and superb composers.
The album is a wonderful example of the “Art of the Duo”, which time after time proves that Jazz duos are probably the most challenging and also the most rewarding settings, which enable for the individual musicians to shine and for the duo to explore telepathic communication and mutual respect.
Overall, this album brings to light an unknown chapter in the life of two great European Jazz musicians, and is a true feast of talent and Jazz Art, performed by two true Geniuses. This is a 2CD live album documenting the 2011 tour of the legendary American Fusion band Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist, which for this occasion was expanded to a quintet and included in addition to the three veteran members: keyboardist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, bassist Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist and drummer Lenny WhiteFind albums by this artist also guitarist Frank GambaleFind albums by this artist and French violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, several including a medley of two tunes, mostly composed by Corea, but including also material by Clarke, White and Ponty. Although recorded live the album offers an excellent sound quality.
There are no surprises whatsoever as far as the music is concerned, since the material includes mostly familiar "hits", which RTF originally recorded a long time ago and performed countless times live since. There was no ambition here to offer new material or change anything in the "golden" formula, which proved to be successful in the past. Even the presence of Ponty, who although also deeply rooted in the Fusion idiom, is stylistically somewhat different due to his European ancestry, makes no difference and proves that he was completely Americanized to fit the pattern of RTF. Gambale shows some unique moments, but again he completely fits the bill.
Having said that, one has of course to remember that these are some of the most revered Fusion pros around and they can play like a dream, which they do all the way, soloing extensively. The music is also excellent, although a bit tattered by repeated use, but still sounds great and humming the familiar melodies is always a great fun. The many RTF fans around the world will not miss the opportunity to hear these guys again for sure.
In short this is like eating your favorite ice cream – sweet familiar taste and great comfort but still Déjà vu ;)

Three of the tracks are solo performances, one by each member of the trio. This album was recorded a year before the trio recorded their eponymous, and so far only studio album. The music is everything one might expect from these three instrumental virtuosi, who manage to avoid turning this into a competition and rather display a wonderful teamwork using their respective strengths the best possible way.
The music spans a wide range of stylistic explorations, but is mostly dominated by the Jazz-World Fusion influences, which Al Di Meola pursued predominantly at the time and his partners followed contentedly.
Overall, this is a breathtaking display of the instrumental abilities of three giant musicians, who complement each other wonderfully herein. The perform beautiful music and the album is not surprisingly full of pyrotechnical neck-breaking displays of instrumental virtuosity. Personally I prefer this live album to the studio album, which followed, as the live electric atmosphere present on this recording is simply electrifying, acoustically ;)

All these projects are impeccable pieces of intelligent, rewarding and highly aesthetic music and it seems that Mateusz is heading to the very top of the local (and perhaps also international) scene.
The album was recorded in the Studio Tokarnia owned by the Smoczynski brothers, and engineered and mastered by Jan. From several other Polish Jazz recordings I´ve heard, which were recorded there, one can hear that this is probably the best recording studio in the country and Jan (in addition to his musical abilities) as a great sound engineer. Well, it´s always a pleasure to give credit, where credit is due, as in this case. Altogether this is brilliant piece of music, which any Jazz connoisseur anywhere should cherish. Most warmly recommended!

The album presents an eclectic amalgam of Jazz-Rock Fusion and Rock and Pop songs, with sarcastic / satirical lyrics dealing with subject matter about many social issues. It is somehow absurd that Zappa’s music became so popular at the time, despite the fact that his bitter criticism of the American society and politics became more and more intense in time, and was never really shared by wide circles of American audiences. One can assume that his lyrics were simply too clever for most people to be understood.
Overall, although this music is now almost fifty years old, it sounds as fresh as it did when first heard and lost absolutely nothing of its power and everlasting beauty. | FRANK ZAPPA ~ HOT RATS ZAPPA 3841 (Barcode: 824302384121) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1969 Released: 1969
This is a reissue / remaster of the 8th album by iconic American guitarist / composer / bandleader / visionary Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, released originally in 1969. The music was recorded in the studio during several weeks in 1969 and utilized a Sisyphean multi-tracking and overdubbing process, which can be studied in detail when listening to the 6CD Box Set “The Hot Rats SessionsFind albums with this title” released in 2019. The album presents six tracks, five of which are instrumentals, all composed by Zappa.
The lineup, in addition to Zappa on guitar, includes violinists Don Sugarcane HarrisFind albums by this artist and Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, multi-instrumentalist Ian UnderwoodFind albums by this artist, vocalist Captain BeefheartFind albums by this artist (on one track), bassists Max BennettFind albums by this artist and Shuggie OtisFind albums by this artist, drummers John GuerinFind albums by this artist and Paul HumphreyFind albums by this artist and many other musicians adding minor contributions.
The album presents a brilliantly innovative Jazz-Rock Fusion, intricate and complex and yet beautifully melodic, which became one of Zappa’s main musical avenues in years to come. It also presents some of his most recognizable compositions, which became trademarks during his concerts. In retrospect, if Zappa had recorded nothing else beyond this album, his musical Genius would have been already recognized in full, but of course this was just a beginning in many respects. The album became in time one of the most iconic recordings in American music.

  | FRANK ZAPPA ~ OVER-NITE SENSATION ZAPPA 3850 (Barcode: 824302385029) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1973 Released: 2012
This is a reissue / remaster of the 17th album by iconic American guitarist / composer / bandleader / visionary Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, originally released in 1973. The sessions that produced this album also produced the 1974 album “Apostrophe (`)Find albums with this title”, which was Zappa’s next album. The album presents seven original songs, all by Zappa.
Zappa assembled an absolutely brilliant lineup of musicians to record the album, which included French violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, keyboardist George DukeFind albums by this artist, trombonist Bruce FowlerFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Sal MarquezFind albums by this artist, multi-instrumentalist Ian UnderwoodFind albums by this artist, percussionist Ruth UnderwoodFind albums by this artist, bassist Tom FowlerFind albums by this artist and drummer Ralph HumphreyFind albums by this artist. The vocals were performed mostly by Zappa with a little help from several singers, including the uncredited appearance by Tina TurnerFind albums by this artist and the IkettesFind albums by this artist. The unique and exemplary guitar parts are of course his.
This album marks a new approach in Zappa’s convoluted musical path and marks his passionate affair with Jazz-Rock Fusion, which has its sources some years earlier in "The Hot Rats SessionsFind albums with this title", but came into full bloom starting with album and dominated his 1970s output. He managed to combine a very complex music, both harmonically and rhythmically, with a seemingly Rock or even Pop glam, to expand his audiences, without losing an iota of his musical integrity.
In retrospect the music on this album sounds a bit pale in comparison to the numerous live recordings of the same material, which was often expanded into lengthy improvisations and offered an explosion of energy and spontaneity. Nevertheless, these are the original versions of that gorgeous material, and have not only a nostalgic tinge, but are true Classics in every respect.
Overall, although almost fifty years passed since this music was recorded, this album remains an absolute Classic in every respect, which stands proudly as an icon of superb music, which still shines brighter than almost anything else recorded since. Zappa’s genius, not only as a musician, but also as a visionary and a brilliant observer of the human condition and American folly and deceit, remain completely relevant and are even more actual today than ever. Side Note Frank Zappa created a vast recorded legacy during his lifetime, which is continuously being expanded using music recorded and stored in his extensive vault. This is the 127th album by iconic American guitarist / composer / bandleader / visionary Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, released posthumously in 2023. As the title suggests, it compiles all the material connected with the iconic “Over-Nite SensationFind albums with this title” album, originally released in 1973, as well as concert recordings from that period. The music was recorded almost entirely at the Bolic Sound and Whitney Studio in 1973, with a few exceptions recorded earlier. The 4CD Box Set offers a total of fifty-four tracks, with over five hours of music. The bonus BD disc offers the original album in various alternate audio formats.
The recordings feature the following lineup: Zappa on guitar and vocals, violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, keyboardist George DukeFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Sal MarquezFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Ian UnderwoodFind albums by this artist, trombonist Bruce FowlerFind albums by this artist, percussionist Ruth UnderwoodFind albums by this artist, bassist Tom FowlerFind albums by this artist and drummer Ralph HumphreyFind albums by this artist. Several vocalists appear on selected tracks.
CD1 presents the original album (7 tracks), bonus session masters (6 tracks) and bonus vault sensations (3 tracks).
CD2 presents more bonus vault sensations (10 tracks) and the first part of the Hollywood Palladium March 23, 1973 concert (3 tracks).
CD3 presents the rest of the Hollywood Palladium concert (9 tracks).
CD4 presents the Cobo Hall May 12, 1973 concert (16 tracks).
The “Over-Nite Sensation” album is one the peaks of Zappa’s career, summarizing his Jazz-Rock Fusion spiced with zany humor period. The instrumental parts are all sensational, with constant twists and turns both harmonically and rhythmically, which characterized Zappa’s approach, reflecting his “out of the box” forward thinking and pioneering / experimental nature, all of which sets him far above most of his contemporaries, and remains absolutely relevant today.
This Box Set offers a wealth of material and absolutely nothing stands between the music and the listener to enjoy a fury and orgy of the Zappa phenomenon. As usual, every note played by Zappa and his ensemble is perfectly unique and these tracks are an integral part of his heritage.
Overall, this is an absolutely essential piece of the Frank Zappa legacy and a fitting tribute to his brilliance. These early Jazz-Rock Fusion recordings are a perfect example of the emerging idiom and are brilliantly executed by the ensemble. Considering that all this happened over fifty years ago clearly proves that Zappa was a visionary / prophetic Genius.

  | FRANK ZAPPA ~ PIQUANTIQUE ESSENTIAL / FOO-EEE 963 (Barcode: 5017615516326) ~ USA ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1973 Released: 1991
This is a bootleg album by iconic American guitarist / composer / bandleader / visionary Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, released officially by Zappa in 1991 as part of the "Beat The Boots!Find albums with this title" Box Set, which included eight bootlegs. The LPs in this Box Set (edition of 600 copies) were not available individually, but the CD versions were made available individually on the Rhino / Foo-eeeFind albums on this label label as catalog numbers 70537 to 70544. In the UK these CDs were released on the Essential / Foo-eeeFind albums on this label label as catalog numbers 956 to 963. This is the eighth album of the set.
The album presents five tracks, four of which were recorded in Stockholm on August 21, 1973 and one tracks was recorded about a month earlier in Sydney. The lineup of the Mothers Of Invention includes Zappa on guitar and vocals, violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, keyboardists George DukeFind albums by this artist and Ian UnderwoodFind albums by this artist, percussionist Ruth UnderwoodFind albums by this artist, trombonist Bruce FowlerFind albums by this artist, bassist Tom FowlerFind albums by this artist and drummer Ralph HumphreyFind albums by this artist. The music is some of the most advanced Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion ever played.
The sound quality is quite reasonable in view of the illegal circumstances surrounding the recording process, often done on inferior equipment. It is of course an invaluable historic document of Zappa’s Genius. It is also valuable not only for its musical content, but also as an authentic document of the Music Industry bootlegging phenomenon and the attempts to fight it. Zappa pioneered (as he did in many areas) the idea of releasing the bootlegs on his own label, following the “if you can’t beat them, use them” formula, which later on became known as “The Official Bootleg” phenomenon still popular today.

This is the 96th album by iconic American guitarist / composer / bandleader / visionary Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, released posthumously in 2013. This 2CD album was released on the VaulternativeFind albums on this label label and is the second of three “Road Tapes” releases, which document entire live performances by Zappa and The Mothers Of InventionFind albums by this artist. This performance was captured at Finlandia Hall, Helsinki, Finland on August 23 & 24, 1973. The album presents nineteen tracks, all composed by Zappa.
The lineup includes, in addition to Zappa, who plays guitar and sings, violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Ian UnderwoodFind albums by this artist, trombonist Bruce FowlerFind albums by this artist, percussionist Ruth UnderwoodFind albums by this artist, keyboardist George DukeFind albums by this artist, bassist Tom FowlerFind albums by this artist and drummer Ralph HumphreyFind albums by this artist. This live material reflects the highly experimental / improvisational character of the music, played by one of the most Jazz oriented lineups of the Mothers. Not surprisingly, most of the music is instrumental.
Six of the tracks on this album last for well over ten minutes, and one even over twenty minutes, which emphasizes the role of improvisation in Zappa’s music, which this superb collection of performers was able to execute with a staggering precision and unlimited imagination. This is also the most extensive document of Luc-Ponty’s live performances with Zappa, which of course is sensational.
Overall, although over fifty years passed since this music was recorded, this album remains an absolute Classic in every respect, which stands proudly as an icon of superb music, which still shines brighter than almost anything else recorded since. Zappa’s genius, not only as a musician, but also as a visionary and a brilliant observer of the human condition and American folly and deceit, remain completely relevant and are even more actual today than ever.

The 2CD album presents twenty tracks, which are guitar solos taken from original compositions by Zappa, except one track which was co-composed with Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist. The music was mostly captured during live performances between 1977 and 1980, with some of the dates, places and lineups unknown.
The lineups that recorded the music include Zappa on guitar, guitarists Ike WillisFind albums by this artist, Denny WalleyFind albums by this artist, Warren CuccurulloFind albums by this artist, Steve VaiFind albums by this artist and Ray WhiteFind albums by this artist, keyboardists Tommy MarsFind albums by this artist, Peter WolfFind albums by this artist, Bob HarrisFind albums by this artist, Eddie JobsonFind albums by this artist and Andre LewisFind albums by this artist, percussionist Ed MannFind albums by this artist, bassists Arthur BarrowFind albums by this artist, Roy EstradaFind albums by this artist and Patrick O`HearnFind albums by this artist and drummers Vinnie ColaiutaFind albums by this artist and Terry BozzioFind albums by this artist.
The music is entirely instrumental and focuses on Zappa’s extraordinary guitar virtuosity, which gets here the full exposure. The tracks testify to his diversity and inventiveness as a guitarist, which often gets lost within the complexity of his music, especially so when it is performed by one of his big ensembles. Although cut off from their “natural” context, the soli form perfectly coherent kaleidoscope of styles, techniques and genres, as well as a collection of performances, which are all Zappa’s idiosynchratic spontaneous creations, totally unlike any other guitar work by any other musician on this planet.
Despite the fact that these are “only” guitar soli, the album is perfectly listenable and these selections are so intense and unadulterated that they require an absolute attention from the listener, who has to overcome the harmonic and rhythmic complexities in order to enjoy this music in full.
Overall, although over forty years passed since this music was recorded, this album remains an absolute Classic in every respect, which stands proudly as an icon of superb music, which still shines brighter than almost anything else recorded since. Zappa’s genius remains mostly a mystery and his guitar playing should be a bottomless source of inspiration to all musicians trying to play the guitar, even if they (hopefully) realize that there was only one Frank Zappa. This is a wonderful archival Box Set, which collects the recordings by the short lived lineup of the MothersFind albums by this artist, led by Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist between May and December of 1970 and celebrates its 50th Anniversary. The material includes studio and concert recordings from the Zappa vault and most of the material is previously unreleased.
This particular lineup of the Mothers included the two ex-TurtlesFind albums by this artist vocalists Mark VolmanFind albums by this artist and Howard KaylanFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Flo & EddieFind albums by this artist), Jazz keyboardist George DukeFind albums by this artist, who arrived via Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist and the brilliant “King KongFind albums with this title” album from 1969, multi-instrumentalist Ian UnderwoodFind albums by this artist (the only original Mother), bassist Jeff SimmonsFind albums by this artist and British drummer Aynsley DunbarFind albums by this artist. Shortly before Zappa disbanded the original Mothers Of InventionFind albums by this artist, he released the seminal solo album “Hot RatsFind albums with this title”, was involved in cross-genre meeting with Zubin MehtaFind albums by this artist and in parallel started to produce the “Uncle MeatFind albums with this title” movie, a typical Zappa mayhem, emphasizing his feverish creativity.
The music is, as always, completely Zappaesque, with brilliant melodic contents, weird polyrhythmic approach, which was always his forte, a Rock oriented rhythm section and Jazz oriented instrumental layers, topped with superb vocal harmonies and Zappa’s angelic / devilish guitar work, which remains unparalleled.
As the time moves on and Zappa’s music is now well into its sixth decade, it becomes more and more apparent that he was an absolute singularity on the 20th Century music scene. No other musician managed to create such a vast body of music so diverse and aesthetically perfect as Zappa. He was also one of the very few musicians with an outlook on the world politics and the sickness of American society, and surely the only one that was not afraid to publicly mock it. His sharp sense of humor cut deeply like a surgeon’s scalpel, but the political establishment managed to present him to the public as a weirdo rather than a sage.
One of the few things that I regret in the course of my musical adventures is the fact that I met Frank only a couple of times over the years, as I’d love to have talked with him in depth. It was not to be and his premature death closed the window of opportunity forever.
For the many Zappa fans this Box Set is of course a must, as everything else that emerges from his vault. It is absolutely blissful that his vault is so well looked after and new material emerges from it periodically and continuously, especially in times were new music is hardly worth any attention. Pass the word and enjoy!
