The fact that Dean managed to invite all these great musicians to play with him during one week speak volumes about his position on the scene and the respect he earned over the years. The album presents five tracks, three of which are over ten minutes in duration. All the music was composed by Dean. The music is absolutely in sync with what one might have expected from such esteemed players, Free Jazz oriented, full of passion and incredible dialogues between these musicians, who often played with each other in various settings. The incredible intensity of the music still allows for excellent individual contributions to be clearly heard. The sextet (four saxophones) track is a wonderful example of group improvisation, where the mutual respect is fully observed and the saxophone quartet is featured as an organic micro-orchestral unit, later joined by the rhythm section. There is so much superb music on this album, that writing about it is actually pretty redundant, and should simply encourage to grab a copy of this gem, before it completely disappears from the market. British Jazz enthusiasts and even listeners who are aware of Elton Dean only through his association with Soft MachineFind albums by this artist, should make to bold step forward and embrace this facet of Dean’s incredible talent. Overall, this is a monumental document of the British Free Jazz scene by the end of the 1990s, when it was at its absolute peak. The tornado swirl on the album’s cover reflects the power and spirit of the music perfectly and fans of this kind of music should find this album indispensable. Lucky for us this music was captured on tape and released, staying with us for posterity. A true force of Nature!

Downes participated in many of the pivotal recording made at the time by other bandleaders, but in parallel always led his own ensemble which played the music he composed. His ability to combine melody and Free Improvisation into a unique amalgam was always his forte and his recordings are great examples of the limitless musical efforts, which are typical of the period. Downes´ fans need no encouragement to grab this album instantly, but British Jazz fans not familiar with his output should definitely investigate, especially in view of the fact that the melody lines and his amazing flute virtuosity make the improvised passages "easier on the ear" for less experienced listeners.

Ardley ran the orchestra with an “iron fist” and in time turned it into a perfectly well oiled ensemble, which was able to perform even the trickiest arrangements with a breeze. His outstanding arrangements of classic Jazz pieces are all masterpieces of rare beauty and sophistication and he manages to get out of the band so much more that an average US big band playing similar material. Of course the soloist, who are all quite outstanding, add another dimension to the overall sound, which is truly heavenly. This is the first album by NJO and includes mostly standards by American (Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, John LewisFind albums by this artist) and British composers, but one of Ardley’s compositions is also included. Ardley, who was an admirer of Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, developed a distinctive orchestral (rather than traditional big band) sound with NJO, using the various sections of the band to complement each other’s sound and tonality. The overall effect is absolutely stunning and this is one of my all time favorite big band albums. This is essential listening to all big band fans and recommended to all Jazz listeners out there. A true gem!

The first three tracks from 1974 present a quintet with bassist Barry GuyFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Dave HoldsworthFind albums by this artist, pianist Howard RileyFind albums by this artist and trombonist Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist. Although recorded in 1974, the music was much later into the form present on this album in later dates between 2005 and 2020. Next track from 1981 presents a quintet with guitarist Hugh MetcalfeFind albums by this artist, Riley, saxophonist Larry StabbinsFind albums by this artist and violinist / electronicist Philipp WachsmannFind albums by this artist and finally the last track presents a duo with German percussionist Stefan HoelkerFind albums by this artist. The album is a spectacular showcase of British / European Improvised Music at its best and has very limited to what most people consider as Jazz, sonically exploring interstellar space rather that our humble earthy neighborhood, but obviously preserving the improvising spirit and using sound as a metaphysical medium to express emotion and artistic expression. The three early tracks form 1974 are perhaps the most remarkable, considering the date of recording, which proves that Oxley already at that time was light-years ahead of most the other musical explorers at the time. The absolute freedom from any references and restrictions characterizes these recordings as completely pioneering at the time, and honestly standing up to anything created in Improvised Music ever since. Kudos to Oxley for releasing these recordings from his personal vaults and to Martin ArcherFind albums by this artist for releasing them faithfully on his DiscusFind albums on this label label, making them available to the world. You make us all spiritually richer being able to listen to this music. Overall, this is a tremendously important historical material, which opens yet another window into the musical legacy of one of the most important British / European Improvising Music personas, which are both delightful and enlightening. An absolute must for Improvising Music followers!

SPONTANEOUS MUSIC ENSEMBLE ~ QUESTION AND ANSWER RHYTHM AND BLUES 068 (Barcode: 5060331752431) ~ UK ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1966 Released: 2021 This is an archival release, which presents early recordings by the pioneering British Free Jazz / Improvised Music outfit, called Spontaneous Music EnsembleFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. SMEFind albums by this artist), fronted by drummer / composer John StevensFind albums by this artist, which also includes saxophonist Trevor WattsFind albums by this artist, trombonist Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist and Australian bassist Bruce CaleFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight tracks recorded live at a pub, as well as an Q&A session with the musicians, and additionally four trio tracks (less Rutherford), recorded a couple of months later at an unknown studio. The sound quality is a bit rough around the edges, but surely good enough to express the atmosphere and the magic of the music. The album’s booklet with text by Simon SpillettFind albums by this artist, gives a wide historic perspective of the circumstances surrounding the music. Soon after Stevens formed the SME with Watts and Rutherford, the group begun a residency at the Little Theatre Club, and soon after recorded their debut album. The recordings on this album originate from just few months later on and are some of the earliest SME musical documents. Over the years the entire British (as well as many European improvisers) Avant-Garde Jazz scene took part in SME activities, making it one of the most formidable British / European foci of the genre. A plethora of SME lineup existed up to the untimely death of Stevens in 1994. Britain was definitely somewhat behind the burgeoning American Avant-Garde Jazz scene, which started in the late 1950s, and therefore what was considered as Free Improvisation in UK was much gentler and less radical than what was happening across the pond. The music played here still offers some basic themes, which are then improvised on, and the music more often than not still swings, at least to those listeners who can recognize that swing in Stevens’ drumming. Watts, improvising bravely and with unlimited expressionism, is only of the verge of becoming the Master Improviser he would become a few years later. Rutherford manages to raise some brows, being perhaps the most virtuosic performer at that point of time. Overall this is certainly a very important document as far as the British / European Avant-Garde history is concerned, and the fact that this music suddenly pops up five and half decades later is a major discographical event. Surely this will be of interest to many British Jazz fans around the globe and make many of them grateful for being able to enjoy it.

The music is as experimental and weird as one might expect from the above lineup, which of course is something some of us love dearly ;) Long improvisations and intimate conversations between these wonderful musicians are always worth listening to and honestly the electronic music elements by the duo are not really significant here, more like background and general ornamentation. The music is very serene and held back, offering a multitude of wonderful soli, in particular those by Evans and Wheeler, which are nothing short of spectacular. The musicians form duos, trios, quartets and a constantly changing lineup, which offers not one dull moment for the duration. The overall atmosphere of freedom and lack of boundaries contributes greatly to the creative powers of the participants and the result is really surprising. For British Free Jazz / Improvised Music enthusiasts this album, which they are most probably nor aware of its existence, is a treasure chest of great discoveries and something definitely worth checking out, well deserving a place in their record collections. Apparently this album is still available, so grab a copy as long as those last. Overall this is a little known gem, which is definitely a great surprise!

SME recorded extensively through the 1970s, when the Improvised Music movement was at its peak. Later on he also recorded with many other European improvising musicians from the continent and continued to record for small independent labels. Stevens died in 1994 (at the age of 54) and left an immense legacy of recorded music, as well as a crucial contribution to the development of the Jazz Art Form. This live recording at the legendary London pub “The Plough”, which served as the meeting place of the Improvised Music scene in the 1970s, captures the John Stevens Trio with saxophone giant Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist and superb young (at the time) bassist Paul RogersFind albums by this artist. The set was recorded on a portable tape machine, which means that the sound quality is limited, but it does not affect the intensity and the brilliance of the music. The trio performs three Osborne originals and three interpretations of Jazz standards, which of course get quite a work-over. All three musicians are simply brilliant and the fans of this music should be grateful it was preserved for posterity, especially in view of the rather limited availability of live material by Osborne. Great to have this lost treasure rediscovered and available for all of us to enjoy. A gem!

The immense body of work Westbrook produced over the years parallels the achievements of many Classical composers and in fact should be considered as contemporary Classical music, although he is mostly associated with the Jazz genre. In the late 1960s / 1970s Westbrook concentrated mostly on his work with Jazz Big Bands, which he led and composed the music for. He usually composed large orchestral suites, based on conceptual or literary content, again similar to the modus operandi of Classical composers. His legendary Big Bands / orchestras comprised of the creme de la creme of the British Jazz musicians active at the time and were one of the most fascinating grounds of musical experimentation. There is no point in explaining the significance of this music and its pioneering nature (which I have already done many times here), suffice to say that this is an absolute masterpiece in every respect and no decent Jazz record collection should exclude this historical milestone. MIKE WESTBROOK ~ METROPOLIS BGO 454 (Barcode: 5017261204547) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1971 Released: 1999 If the 1960s served as a period of establishment of the British Jazz scene, with scores of extremely talented instrumentalists and composers coming to prominence, surely the 1970s marked the “emancipation of British Jazz from American slavery”, a phrase brilliantly defined by British trumpeter / composer / musicologist / writer Ian CarrFind albums by this artist. One of the distinct heroes and champions of this new path was undoubtedly pianist / composer Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, whose compositions for large Jazz ensembles were the British answer and equivalent to the body of work composed by the great Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist. MetropolisFind albums with this title marks a high point in a series of brilliant works composed by Westbrook and recorded by large ensembles comprising of the creme de la creme of British Jazz musicians. The recording presents extended soloing by the band members, that was not present on the much more concise studio versions of these compositions, and allows a rare glimpse at the atmosphere prevailing at the Old Place, which was London´s melting pot of all things Jazz related, side by side with the Little Theatre Club run by drummer John StevensFind albums by this artist. As someone who was lucky to witness that period at first hand, I must admit that the fifty years that passed since have not managed to erase the intensity of the magic that was in the air and the feeling that a completely new music was being born right in front of your eyes (and ears). The album is accompanied by informative liner notes by Westbrook and others and is also a tribute to John JackFind albums by this artist, the omnipresent man behind the British Jazz scene and founder of CadillacFind albums on this label Records, who sadly departed in September 2017. The sound quality of the recording is not ideal, but is certainly good enough to faithfully reconstruct the atmosphere of the concert and enable us to enjoy the music, as it was performed. The fact that this music was recorded at all and survived fifty years of storage is another miracle. We are all very lucky that this recording was unearthed and will be now preserved for posterity. Of course this is an absolute must for all British Jazz enthusiasts and Westbrook followers!

His role as one of the most creative protagonists of the British / European Jazz revolution in the 1960s / 1970s was invaluable, but Wheeler continued his seemingly endless streak of creativity into the 21st Century, staying relevant and up to date, with very few rivaling forces of his magnitude.
