  | BRECKER BROTHERS ~ THE COMPLETE ARISTA ALBUMS COLLECTION SONY 886979796225 (Barcode: 886979796225) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1975 - 1980 Released: 2012
Brothers Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist (trumpet / flugelhorn) and Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist (saxophone) are collectively and individually symbols of the American Jazz, Fusion and Funk scenes. They can be credited as co-inventors and pioneers of the American Jazz-Rock Fusion in the late 1960s and early 1970s (DreamsFind albums by this artist, Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist), especially as defining the Brass-Rock movement. By the mid-1970s they founded one of the most iconic and influential ensembles, calling it simply Brecker BrothersFind albums by this artist (or Brecker Bros.Find albums by this artist), which added Funk to the already well defined Fusion genre, creating a unique voice of unparalleled sophistication, feel and vitality, which had little, if any competition.
The Brecker Brothers band existed originally for about six years, recording six marvelous albums between 1975 and 1980 (a reunion band recorded two more albums in early 1990s) The lineup changed over time and in retrospect included the absolute cream of the crop of American Fusion and Funk musicians active at the time: saxophonist David SanbornFind albums by this artist, guitarists Bob MannFind albums by this artist, Steve KhanFind albums by this artist, Barry FinnertyFind albums by this artist and others, keyboardists Don GrolnickFind albums by this artist, George DukeFind albums by this artist and others, bassists Will LeeFind albums by this artist, Neil JasonFind albums by this artist and Marcus MillerFind albums by this artist, drummers Harvey MasonFind albums by this artist, Christopher ParkerFind albums by this artist, Terry BozzioFind albums by this artist, Steve GaddFind albums by this artist and others. These names really tell the story, and the collective talents combined with the extraordinary compositions by Randy and Michael and the intricate arrangements created some of the unforgettable music, which still sounds as goof today as it did at the time it was recorded.
This Box Set collects all the original six albums, released on the Arista label, and adds a couple of little known albums recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1978, originally called "Blue MontreuxFind albums with this title" and "Blue Montreux IIFind albums with this title", which find Randy and Michael in the company of other Jazz luminaries: pianist Warren BernhardtFind albums by this artist, guitarists Steve Khan and Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Mike MainieriFind albums by this artist, bassists Tony LevinFind albums by this artist and Eddie GomezFind albums by this artist and drummer Steve JordanFind albums by this artist, performing some Brecker Brothers material and other original compositions, all perfectly executed.
With Michael´s tragic death in 2007, hearing the Brecker Brothers again is no longer possible, so this Box Set is a great tribute to a closed chapter in the history of American music, which should be remembered, as it is timeless and essential. Changing fads and fashions slide away, leaving the solid gold shining…

  | RANDY BRECKER & MATS HOLMQUIST / UMO ~ TOGETHER MAMA 1056 (Barcode: 734956105624) ~ SWEDEN ~ Big Band Jazz Recorded: 2018 Released: 2018
This is a wonderful Big Band Jazz album, which features American trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, Swedish composer / arranger / conductor Mats HolmquistFind albums by this artist and the Finnish UMOFind albums by this artist Jazz Orchestra. The album presents nine tracks, five of which are composed and arranged by Holmquist, three are composed by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and arranged by Holmquist and one is a standard arranged by him.
UMO Jazz Orchestra has been one of my favorite Big Bands since forever and the performances captured here affirm this lasting admiration. Brecker solos brilliantly on each and every track, sharing soloing duties with other UMO band members and the Orchestra plays like one organic body, despite the fact that the players are constantly rejuvenated with “new blood” from the local Finnish scene.
Holmquist compositions and arrangements are a quintessential amalgam of the American Big Band tradition and the European Orchestral Jazz approach, where the sound is meant to be organic as an ensemble rather than just soloist supported / accompanied by an orchestra.
The music is all within the mainstream Jazz boundaries, highly melodic and perfectly organized both harmonically and rhythmically, but the sound is modern and the performances heartwarming, creating a superb listening experience. The Corea pieces offer a new perspective on his compositions, which alone are worth the price of the album.
Overall, this is an excellent, although somewhat conservative Big Band album, which is honey on the ears of Orchestral Jazz lovers. Brecker fans will find him in top form of course, playing in different moods, which is always highly rewarding. Heartwarming music for warm summer nights (or winter nights by a fireplace). Delightful!

  | RANDY BRECKER / WLODEK PAWLIK ~ NIGHT IN CALISIA LICOMP 014 (Barcode: 5903034005490) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion Recorded: 2011 Released: 2012
This is the second album on which the legendary American trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist cooperates with Polish Jazz pianist / composer Wlodek PawlikFind albums by this artist, performing a Jazz suite composed by Pawlik. Their previous cooperation resulted in the album "Tykocin Jazz SuiteFind albums with this title", which was very warmly received by critics and audiences alike. This time they perform the "Night In CalisiaFind albums with this title" suite, which was commissioned by the Polish City of Kalisz to commemorate its 1850 Anniversary. The music is performed by Brecker, a piano trio led by Pawlik with bassist Pawel PantaFind albums by this artist and drummer Cezary KonradFind albums by this artist and the Kalisz Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Adam KlocekFind albums by this artist. The suite is sub-divided into six sections, which together provide a continuous flow of integrated music.
The suite is based on several melodic themes, which reappear throughout the sections, with some passages performed by the orchestra and others featuring the piano trio and the trumpeter. There are several extended solos, all executed perfectly as expected from such high-class musicians. The instrumentation and arrangements balance beautifully between the Jazz undercurrent and the orchestral parts, with naturally tend to sound more Classical in nature. The music is wonderfully lyrical and melodic, tranquil and serene most of the time, simply stroking the listener´s attention note by note. Brecker plays simply outstanding, with exceptional clarity and stability, which is extremely difficult. Pawlik fills the space with the melodic motifs, always attentive and gentle. The bassist displays sheer virtuosic qualities and a warm sound of rare beauty and the veteran drummer keeps time, when keeping time is needed and gently strokes the set during the more atmospheric passages. This is pure bliss.
I suppose some listeners and Jazz connoisseurs might find this music to be slightly "sugary" at times. Well, perhaps so, but it certainly does not bother me at all. This is supposed to be a melodic, Jazz oriented amalgam of cross-genre explorations, well framed within the Classical tradition as well as the Jazz heritage. Pawlik is obviously a Master of his trade, which anybody listening to this recording must admit fair and square. There is a plentitude of wonderful Jazz / Classical interplays, which are intelligent, interesting and entertaining. The artistry involved both in the composition as well as the execution of this music is definitely praiseworthy.
This album is highly recommended to listeners, who love the proximity of Jazz and contemporary Classical music, and who will find this work delicious at all times. Pawlik confirms his position as a major force on the Polish Jazz scene and listening to Brecker´s trumpet is always a pleasure. Well done!

  | DAVID CLAYTON-THOMAS ~ BLOODLINES DCT 2000 (Barcode: 660355351228) ~ CANADA ~ Brass Rock Recorded: 1998 Released: 1999
This is a studio album by Canadian vocalist / songwriter David Clayton-ThomasFind albums by this artist, primarily known as the charismatic frontman of the legendary Brass Rock ensemble Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, recorded with a huge team of over two dozen musicians, including some BS&T cohorts: trumpeters Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist and Tony KlatkaFind albums by this artist, trombonist Dave BargeronFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Fred LipsiusFind albums by this artist, guitarist Mike SternFind albums by this artist, bassist Gary FooteFind albums by this artist, drummer Brian DelaneyFind albums by this artist and many others. The album presents twelve songs, all of which were written by Clayton-Thomas.
The solo recording career of Clayton-Thomas was revitalized near the turn of the Millennium, when he was nearing the age of sixty, which is quite remarkable and unparalleled. He recorded (so far) thirteen albums since 1996, this being the second of them, more than twice the number of albums he recorded beforehand since the start of his career.
The album is the closest in style and sound to the album recorded with BS&T. The songs are beautifully arranged in the Brass Rock style and Clayton-Thomas performances are brilliant as always. His feeling and his idiosyncratic voice, charisma and love of music remain intact and for his many fans this album is strong as everything else he ever recorded. The accompanying musicians are all pros and the album offers superb instrumental performances from start to finish.
After being a great fan of Clayton-Thomas for over five decades, it is great to hear him carrying on with what he loves to do taking us along on a wonderful ride. My copy is autographed and includes a ticket stub from the concert where he signed the album.
Overall, this is an absolutely sublime example of David Clayton-Thomas as a vocalist and songwriter, one of the greatest talents to emerge on the American (well Canadian) scene in all time. Absolutely classic and indispensable in every collection of his recordings, but admittedly very difficult to find.

  | AL DI MEOLA ~ ACROSS THE UNIVERSE EAR MUSIC 4029759140313 (Barcode: 4029759140313) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Pop Fusion Recorded: 2019 Released: 2020
This is an album by American guitar hero Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, his second release paying tribute to the music by The BeatlesFind albums by this artist, following the “All Your LifeFind albums with this title” album from 2013. Di Meola plays several guitars, bass, drums and percussion, which makes this almost a solo album, but there are also some strings and brass arrangements and the Indian tabla player Amit KavthekarFind albums by this artist, Italian accordionist Fausto BeccalossiFind albums by this artist and American trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist play on selected tracks. The album presents fourteen tracks, all familiar songs composed by The Beatles.
The music takes the Pop songs into the Jazz-World Fusion world, which is the turf where Di Meola feels most comfortable, and the virtuosic guitar improvisations and dense arrangements transform the songs into new environment, but leave enough of the original melodies so the listener is able to recognize them without much effort.
Personally this album is a bit too busy for me, i.e. too many things are happening all at once, and since The Beatles music has been utterly explored almost to death, the entire enterprise leaves me somewhat cold, but I do appreciate the musicianship and talent involved.
Overall, this is a nice display of Di Meola’s abilities, but somewhat hectic and populist as far as I am concerned. But guitar aficionados and Beatles deadheads will love this to bits.

  | DREAMS ~ DREAMS / IMAGINE MY SURPRISE BGO 0940 (Barcode: 5017261209405) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2010
The fantastic US Jazz-Rock ensemble DreamsFind albums by this artist, which unfortunately recorded only two albums, both included here, was one of the best examples of the American branch of Brass-Rock, a relatively short-lived sub genre of Jazz-Rock, which also included such superb ensembles like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist and a few others. Dreams originated in NY and had a somewhat flexible lineup of associated musicians, but the importance of these two albums is mainly due to the fact that they provided a debut recording opportunity to some of the genre´s most iconic figures: brothers -Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist (saxophone) and Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist (trumpet) - and drummer Billy CobhamFind albums by this artist. Other Dreams members were already established figures on the scene, like bassist Doug LubahnFind albums by this artist (DoorsFind albums by this artist), guitarist John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist and keyboardist Don GrolnickFind albums by this artist. Other group members were keyboardist / guitarist Jeff KentFind albums by this artist, trombonist Barry RogersFind albums by this artist, vocalist Edward VernonFind albums by this artist, bassist Will LeeFind albums by this artist and guitarist / trumpeter Bob MannFind albums by this artist. Musically the group mixed genres freely, with Jazz, Funk, Rock and Soul adopted at will and beautifully arranged to create some of the most memorable sounds of the period. The music is just perfect; although spontaneous and improvised, every note is just exactly where it belongs, every drum beat precisely on time, every phrase brilliantly placed, every tempo change and every instrumental solo and above all the overall interplay are just what a music fun needs – pure genius. It is hard to believe that a bunch of young musician was capable of producing such magnificent music, but then on the other hand considering that Dreams seeded Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, Brecker BrothersFind albums by this artist and many other heroes of the Jazz and Fusion scene, perhaps one should not wonder. I own both these albums since the day they were released and have listened to them repeatedly over the years, always enjoying myself immensely and it was me who suggested to BGOFind albums on this label to reissue them – I´m glad they did! Now many more potential listeners have the opportunity to hear them as well – enjoy as this is essential stuff!

  | GRANT GEISSMAN ~ BLOOZ FUTURISM 2765 (Barcode: 899653002765) ~ USA ~ Smooth Jazz Recorded: 2022 Released: 2022
This is an album by veteran American guitarist / composer Grant GeissmanFind albums by this artist, recoded with many well-known Jazz / Blues musicians, like trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, pianists David GarfieldFind albums by this artist and Russell FerranteFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Tom ScottFind albums by this artist, guitarists Robben FordFind albums by this artist, Josh SmithFind albums by this artist, Joe BonamassaFind albums by this artist and John JorgensonFind albums by this artist, as well as a rhythm section comprising of keyboardist Jim CoxFind albums by this artist, bassist Trey HenryFind albums by this artist and drummer Ray BrinkerFind albums by this artist and a few others. The album presents twelve original compositions, all by the leader.
The music is all Smooth Jazz oriented, with a Blues tinge but not really Blues in the classic meaning of the idiom. It is all very well played, with no risks taken, and the presence of the invited guests is not able to infuse any real fire.
Geissman is obviously a very professional guitar player, and shows his chops along the way, but his compositions are quite forgettable and although pleasant on the ear, leave no lasting impression.
Overall, this is a nice Smooth Jazz album, with some good guitar parts and a Bluesy feel, which might be great for driving, but calling it “Blooz” is misleading in the least.

  | MICHAEL GIBBS ~ NONSEQUENCE PROVOCATEUR 1027 (Barcode: 5038491102724) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2001 Released: 2001
British composer / arranger / bandleader Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist is one of the pillars of modern British Jazz. His outstanding 1970s recordings serve as musical milestones in the development of Jazz and Jazz-Rock Fusion composition and his bands of the period, which always included some of the best players on the scene, are remarkable achievements remembered and cherished to this very day. After the decline of the British Jazz scene Gibbs returned to the US, where he concentrated on teaching and composing works for many different media (TV, cinema, performances and concerts) in a variety of musical genres, including of course Jazz and contemporary Classical Music. Although many of his compositions were released as soundtrack albums, he recorded only three “real” / dedicated Jazz albums in the last 30 years. Therefore his new album on ProvocateurFind albums on this label Records is a major event and a delight for his many fans and admirers. The album presents an ambitious project involving a recording on two continents (Hamburg and New York) by two big ensembles (the NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist in Hamburg and a specially assembled band in NY), presenting music mostly written by Gibbs with just a few of his unique arrangements of compositions by other composers. The NY band includes some of the most illustrious names on the contemporary Jazz scene, like Lew SoloffFind albums by this artist and Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Chris HunterFind albums by this artist and Alex FosterFind albums by this artist (saxophone), Hiram BullockFind albums by this artist (guitar) and Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist (bass) among others. The NDR Big Band includes many marvelous players, but most notably saxophonist Christof LauerFind albums by this artist and pianist Wladyslaw SendeckiFind albums by this artist. The music is everything one might expect from Gibbs – marvelously melodic, beautifully crafted, devilishly cleverly arranged and superbly executed by both ensembles. Gibbs skillfully gets the best out of the big band setting, using the incredible dynamics it allows for and interposing multi-layered harmonic and rhythmic structures against each other to achieve an incredibly dramatic effect. Several excellent solo parts ornament the album like cherries on a cake and the different moods and tempi never allow for even a brief dull moment. The music reflects perfectly the composer’s versatility and open-mindedness, which have always been his forte. This is one refreshing and delightful musical experience that I’d hate my friends to miss; so nothing else remains to be said other that recommending this album wholeheartedly. You won’t regret it!

  | BARTOSZ HADALA ~ THE RUNNER UP PILOO 003 (Barcode: 859703475543) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2008 Released: 2010
This is the debut album (in the Jazz field) by Polish pianist / composer Bartosz HadalaFind albums by this artist, currently residing in Canada. The album was recorded with the help of six excellent Jazz musicians, playing in different settings: trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Ada RovattiFind albums by this artist, bassists Dave AndersonFind albums by this artist (electric) and Noriko UedaFind albums by this artist (acoustic), drummer Antonio SanchezFind albums by this artist and percussionist Kevin GarciaFind albums by this artist. The album includes nine original compositions by Hadala and one standard.
The music is mainstream modern Jazz, with clear melody lines and classic instrumentation approach, which clearly places the album in the American rather than European Jazz category. It is perfectly executed, with many excellent solos and professionalism evident at every step. The compositions are truly first-rate, and are the strongest asset of this album. Hadala´s piano playing is absolutely wonderful, elegant and expressive but perhaps slightly too conventional for more advanced listeners. Nevertheless the overall level of the music and especially the compositions are praiseworthy.
The album´s versatile settings, from a classic piano trio to a sextet, and the interesting compositions, which are excellent vehicles for the musicians´ improvisations, make it a pleasurable listening experience, highly recommended to mainstream Jazz connoisseurs. Hopefully Hadala will record another album soon, as his music is too good to be undiscovered.

CD3 presents eight bonus tracks, five from the first album and three from the second, which include both outtakes and alternate takes, all by the leader except one composition by McClure.
The music is all within the modern mainstream Jazz tradition, showcasing Koivistoinen’s brilliant composing / arranging skills and superb performances by some of the best American Jazz musicians active at the time.
Koivistoinen’s ties with American Jazz go back in time to the years spent at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he absorbed the knowledge he would brilliantly utilize during his future career. He always showed a deep respect towards the American Jazz tradition, but at the same time presented a highly individual voice, which went beyond the boundaries of that tradition and incorporated European musical values and his native Finnish influences, turning him into one of the most versatile and prominent European Jazz personalities, as the music included here brilliantly exemplifies.
It is of course great to see these two important albums expanded and made available again, thanks to the exemplary work done by SvartFind albums on this label Records, which treats the Finnish musical treasures with the respect they deserve, preserving the Cultural values, which are perhaps more important today than ever, in these dark days.

Following the recent demise of the great German clarinetist / composer / bandleader and one of the Godfathers of the modern German Jazz, as well as a dear Friend, Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, I decided to dig into my shelves and write about some of his albums I did not review previously.
Kuhn recorded this album with a bunch of friends from the US and Germany, a list that proves his status as one of the most admired Jazz musicians on the international scene. The list includes saxophonists Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist and Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, guitarist Chuck LoebFind albums by this artist, fellow clarinetists Eddie DanielsFind albums by this artist and Buddy DeFrancoFind albums by this artist, trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, bassist Dieter IlgFind albums by this artist and drummer Wolfgang HaffnerFind albums by this artist. The music includes some standards and some original compositions by Kuhn and the participating musicians, altogether ten tracks of great performances, which showcase Kuhn’s versatility playing anything between Swing to Free.
These relaxed sessions are an ideal opportunity to allow the musicians to get the absolute best out of themselves, all supporting Kuhn as the main soloist, who is simply brilliant every step of the way.
Kuhn a sublime example of a total musician, with a career spanning decades and crossing styles from Swing to Avant-Garde, always with grace, intelligence and professionalism beyond reproach. For clarinet lovers, this album is an absolute revelation.
Overall, this an instant classic, full of brilliant music and heavenly performances, which is absolutely perfect from start to finish. Goodbye Friend!

  | OREN NEIMAN ~ FROLIC AND DETOUR NOT ON LABEL (Barcode: 884501114257) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz Recorded: 2008 Released: 2009
2nd album by Israeli (resident in US) guitarist / composer Oren NeimanFind albums by this artist, a quartet recording with Neiman on guitar, Kenny WarrenFind albums by this artist on trumpet, Doug DrewesFind albums by this artist on bass and Kenny ShawFind albums by this artist on drums, featuring his original compositions. Neiman moved to NY in 2001, where he studied with some of the best Jazz players on the scene, including guitarist John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist, and soon becoming his protégé. Following the studies he formed his own quartet, recording a debut album in 2006. This new recording, with a new quartet, is quite a unique statement. Neiman concentrates here more on producing a musical statement rather than showing off his guitar playing. In fact it is the trumpeter, who plays most of the leads on the album, with Neiman more in the shadows playing only occasional solo parts, but sometimes they play amazing unisono passages, which remind me of the Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist / Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist excursions in Eleventh HouseFind albums by this artist, but which are stylistically remote from the Fusion played by Eleventh House. Neiman´s music is very difficult to characterize (which is a good thing), obviously influenced by many diverse sources. It is predominantly Jazzy, but it also touches upon ethnic themes and rhythmic patterns, often using odd meters and unusual harmony. Also the unusual sound blend of the guitar / trumpet combination gives the listener the impression of hearing something innovative and rarely attempted before. Warren is an impressive player, with great sensitivity, warm tone and good range, who is able to make his instrument aggressive and lyrical, whichever suits the music at the time. The rhythm section gives a perfect support to the soloists, handling the difficult tempi with ease and elegance. Neiman´s praise goes mainly to his composing abilities, as his instrumental duties here are not the main concern (as far as I perceive it), although his playing is obviously top notch. Overall this is an interesting and challenging album, absolutely worth investigating.

American trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist guests on three tracks and Italian (resident in US) saxophonist Ada RovattiFind albums by this artist (Randy’s wife) guests on two tracks. The album presents eight tracks, all originals by the leader.
The music is highly melodic mainstream Jazz, energetic and Funky, definitely on the lighter side of the Jazz spectrum, but excellently played by all participants. The idea is obviously to have fun and play music, which can be enjoyed by a wide spectrum of Jazz listeners.
Overall, this is a pleasant Jazz album, accessible to a wide audience and offering an enjoyable listening experience, which in these bleak days is not such a bad idea. Although originating from Norway, it sounds pretty close to American Jazz, and the presence of the guest musicians emphasizes that trend. Not really my cup of tea, but many Jazz lovers might enjoy this “easy on the ear” approach.

This is a 2CD reissue of three studio albums by the legendary Brazilian Jazz vocalist / songwriter Flora PurimFind albums by this artist, released on Warner Bros.Find albums on this label Records in 1977, 1978 and 1979 respectively.
These albums were recorded while Purim was at the peak of her popularity in the US, and she flirts with some Smooth Jazz and Latin Jazz material, in addition to her usual Brazilian Jazz, but they are nevertheless still absolutely gorgeous. Some of the best US Jazz musicians at the time accompany her on these albums, including of course her husband drummer / percussionist Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, bassist Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist, keyboardists George DukeFind albums by this artist and Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist and numerous others.

CD2 includes the album “Nothing Will Be As It Was…TomorrowFind albums with this title”, from 1977, which presents eight tracks, and the album “Carry OnFind albums with this title”, from 1979, which presents ten tracks.
To this very day Purim is one of the most important Jazz vocalist of all time, a pioneer of the Brazilian Jazz wave that swept the world in the 1970s and a very gifted songwriter as well. She is one of my favorite vocalists and I am incredibly happy to have had the opportunity to meet her several times.
Overall, these are excellent vocal Jazz / Jazz-World Fusion albums, which are absolutely an essential addition to every Vocal Jazz collection and which lost absolutely nothing of their brilliance over time. The reissue is a most welcomed opportunity to grab a copy of the them. Purim’s many followers need no encouragement of course and many young Jazz vocalists can learn a lot from these recordings. | MIKE STERN ~ ALL OVER THE PLACE HEADS UP 33186 ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2011 - 2012 Released: 2012
Some musicians simply can´t go wrong, and guitarist / composer Mike SternFind albums by this artist is certainly one of them. Decades of superb performances, composing and recording albums produced an incredible volume of music, which is always first rate and stays fresh, vibrant and eternally uplifting. This, his 17th album as a leader, is another of those wonderful albums that are simply perfect in what they are. It includes eleven new Stern original compositions, performed by an incredible all star band and guest artists, which reads like the who´s who of American Jazz and Fusion.
In time Stern managed to work out a formula, which works perfectly. His compositions combine great melodies with catchy licks and funky groove, but maintain incredibly high aesthetic standard and intelligent arrangements. The level of musicianship and stellar performances make the entire package irresistible. Stern´s Fusion is always an amalgam of the good old Blues roots with modern electric Funk and of course deep respect for the Jazz tradition.
The list of the performers on this album is really very long, so here are just a few of the better known names: trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Kenny GarrettFind albums by this artist and Bob MalachFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Jim BeardFind albums by this artist, bassists Anthony JacksonFind albums by this artist, Will LeeFind albums by this artist and Dave HollandFind albums by this artist, drummers Dave WecklFind albums by this artist and Al FosterFind albums by this artist and many others. On this album Stern tackles (for the first time) Jazz compositions by other composers (Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, John ColtraneFind albums by this artist and others), adding three compositions of his own. Accompanied by a superb group of musicians, which includes trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, bassist Jay AndersonFind albums by this artist and drummer Al FosterFind albums by this artist, this session clearly shows Stern´s deep ties with Jazz and profound understanding of the Jazz tradition. This is classic Fusion and Stern´s guitar playing is simply overwhelmingly excellent, with great flow, emotion and technical virtuosity. A must for any Fusion enthusiast!

  | ANDY SUMMERS ~ PEGGY`S BLUE SKYLIGHT REPERTOIRE / RARE 1003 (Barcode: 4009910000328) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2000 Released: 2007
It is not often that a Rock musician decides to cross over into much more advanced musical environment, such as Jazz or World Music and does so completely and seriously. PoliceFind albums by this artist guitarist Andy SummersFind albums by this artist, obviously known to most Rock listeners on this planet, is one of those musicians, who changed their path and successfully developed a "new" career. This album, which is a tribute to the music of the great American bassist / composer Charles MingusFind albums by this artist, showcases Summers as a splendid Jazz guitarist, with beautiful technique and exquisite taste. Of course Summers manages to achieve a completely unique sound and voicing on his instrument, which retain a certain affiliation with his Rock roots, but overall the album is an absolute knockout. With bassist Dave CarpenterFind albums by this artist, drummer Joel TaylorFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist and many other superb musicians, this album is a true delight. Life is full of surprises! Visitors' Comments Christopher Brice I was a little sceptical about this but have thoroughly enjoyed it; a new slant on successful fusion in my view - jazz with pop/rock production!

  | ADAM WENDT AND FRIENDS ~ RHYTHM & JAZZ SOLITON 862 (Barcode: 5901571098623) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2018 Released: 2018
This is an album by veteran Polish Jazz saxophonist / composer Adam WendtFind albums by this artist recorded in a quartet setting with pianist Wojciech NiedzielaFind albums by this artist, bassist Zbigniew WrombelFind albums by this artist and drummer Marcin JahrFind albums by this artist. American trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist guests on two tracks and guitarist Dean BrownFind albums by this artist on one track. The album presents nine original compositions, all by Wendt. The album was beautifully recorded at the RecPublica Studios and engineered by Lukasz OlejarczykFind albums by this artist and offers a truly spectacular sound,
The music, as the title suggests, is all mainstream Jazz that emphasizes the Rhythm And Blues stream in American Jazz popular in the 1950s and 1960s. It is pretty astounding how American this music sounds, although it is completely "Made in Poland"! When blindfold tested this music might have been identified as a "lost" Cannonball AdderleyFind albums by this artist album. For the Jazz cognoscenti the Adderley´s great hit "Mercy, Mercy. Mercy" comes immediately to mind when this music plays, but we should remember it was written by Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist, who was as European as they come. Niedziela´s vamping on this album and his piano parts are a great tribute to Zawinul.
The execution is absolutely perfect in every respect – the sound, the beat, the feel and everything else sounds like top American musicians at work. But considering the fact that these are original compositions, one can only take the hat off in full respect and admiration.
Although this album does not overall offer anything new or unexpected, it presents a truthful reproduction and a tribute to the lighter side of American Jazz, with originally contributed music, which does hold its ground perfectly. For the many enthusiasts, who still love this kind of Jazz, this album is a true delight and an irrefutable proof that "White Man Can Jump", especially if they are Polish.

  | FRANK ZAPPA ~ ZAPPA IN NEW YORK ZAPPA 3856 (Barcode: 824302385623) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1976 Released: 2012
This is a reissue / remaster of the 23rd album by iconic American guitarist / composer / bandleader / visionary Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, recorded live during a series of concerts at the NYC Palladium in December 1976 and originally released as a 2LP album in 1978. A much expanded 5CD edition, including the original release and hours of bonus material, all previously unreleased, was released in 2019 as the 112th album, called “Zappa In New York (40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)Find albums with this title”. All the music was composed by Zappa.
The group / orchestra accompanying Zappa, who plays guitar and sings, includes an incredible assemblage of musicians: rhythm guitarist / vocalist Ray WhiteFind albums by this artist, keyboardist / violinist Eddie JobsonFind albums by this artist, bassist Patrick O`HearnFind albums by this artist, drummer Terry BozzioFind albums by this artist, percussionist Ruth UnderwoodFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist David SamuelsFind albums by this artist and a brilliant brass section comprising of saxophonists Lou MariniFind albums by this artist, Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist and Ronnie CuberFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist and trombonist Tom MaloneFind albums by this artist. The material includes some compositions, which appeared on earlier Zappa’s releases, but most of the material was completely new at the time.
The music, as I have already stated repeatedly, is beyond categorization, being first and foremost the idiosyncratic creation of Zappa’s musical Genius. Obviously at the time Zappa was emphasizing the Jazz elements in his music, as the Jazzy brass section certifies, creating his very own Jazz-Rock Fusion, but these terms are highly inappropriate to describe the full scope of this incredible music.
Every new piece of reissued vault material by Zappa expands the portrait of one of the paramount musical Geniuses of the 20th Century. As far as live albums are concerned, this gem certainly finds its place in the Pantheon of the finest live recordings of all time. Listening to these 5 CDs in a row is definitely a life changing Zappaorgy.
Overall, this is an absolute must have album for all Zappaoids, but in truth every true music lover should find this music outstanding in every possible and impossible way… beyond recommendation… Side Note Frank Zappa created a vast recorded legacy during his lifetime, which is continuously being expanded using music recorded and stored in his extensive vault. The albums between #001 to #062 were released during Zappa's lifetime and all the others were released posthumously. There are countless unofficial / bootleg releases on the market as well.
