JOACHIM KUHN ~ BIRTHDAY EDITION
ACT 6017 (Barcode: 614427601728) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1987 - 1995 Released: 2014

This album celebrates the 70th Birthday of the German Jazz pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist. The first album of this 2CD set presents recordings by the Kuhn trio with French bassist Jean-Francois Jenny-ClarkFind albums by this artist and Swiss drummer Daniel HumairFind albums by this artist, recorded live at the Jazzfest Berlin in 1987 and 1995. The second album is a re-edition of the brilliant Jazz symphony "EuropeanaFind albums with this title", composed by the renowned British composer Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist and performed by a dream team of European Jazz musicians, including Kuhn´s trio with Jenny-Clark and Norwegian drummer Jon ChristensenFind albums by this artist and many soloists like German trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, French accordionist Richard GallianoFind albums by this artist and others, with the NDR Philharmonic Orchestra. This album was originally recorded in 1994 and released in 1995.

Kuhn, who left East Germany in 1966 to join his older brother Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, who was already living in West Germany, became in time one of the most prolific and influential German and European Jazz musicians. Kuhn, who started as an avant-gardist and Free Jazz enthusiast went through a Jazz-Rock Fusion phase during the 1970s, being one of the pioneers of that genre at the time, returned to advanced Jazz explorations later on, and is to this day considered as one of the top European Jazz artists.

The piano trio album is a superb example of the modern approach to this seemingly simple setting, which treats the instruments on an absolutely equal level, giving them the same opportunity to express their ideas. Of course every trio is only as good as the cooperation between its members, and this particular trio has very few competitors in that department. Of the six pieces the trio plays, four are originals by Kuhn, one is a Humair / Kuhn collaboration and one was composed by the great French Jazz clarinetist Michel PortalFind albums by this artist. It is fascinating to see how the music, which was recorded eight years apart, appears to be as if recorded during the same concert. Such level of perfect integration and telepathic interplay is only achieved by the very best musicians out there and it´s great that ACTFind albums on this label released these live recordings as they are simply too good to be forgotten.

The Jazz symphony is of course as different form the trio recordings as the Jazz idiom permits; from an intimate trio into a symphonic grandeur. It is no secret that I have been a loyal follower of the works by Michael Gibbs ever since he appeared on the British scene, and in retrospect his orchestral works have been some of my fondest experiences not only as Jazz pieces, but as examples of grand music in general. The concept of this extraordinary work is to take a musical tour of Western Europe, from the northern Scandinavian countries, via central Europe and then south west to Spain. The symphony is divided into thirteen separate fragments, each one featuring different soloists, which are loosely connected to specific European countries but overall present the diversity of the Continent´s Cultural heritage and aesthetic values as expressed by music.

Although these two albums have seemingly almost nothing in common on the surface, they do represent simply a different facets of the same Cultural attitude, based on tradition and grooming as many new ideas as possible, ignoring incompatibilities and obstacles. Gibbs proves again that his exquisite melodies are perfect vehicles for Jazz improvisations, and the superb team gathered to perform this music stands up to the challenge with flying colors.

Overall this is a great tribute to the life and music of Joachim Kuhn, but includes also many other aspects of the music we love so much. Even if one already has a copy of "Europeana", it´s still worth to get a copy of this set just for the trio album, which will probably lead to another listening of the Gibbs work as well. Great stuff!

JOACHIM KUHN / ROLF KUHN ~ LOVE STORIES
IN+OUT 77061 (Barcode: 798747706124) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2003 Released: 2003

This is a spectacular duo album by the Kuhn Brothers: pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and clarinetist Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist. As the title suggests they perform ten love songs, nine of which are standards every Jazz fan knows well and one is an original piece co-composed by the brothers.

The presence of the Kuhn Brothers also promises freedom and the music delivers plenty of it of course. Although separated by fifteen years of age and in many respects by musical background, the brothers always managed to find what unites them rather than what separates them, of which this album is a beautiful living proof. Therefore the music herein presents the melodic themes of each of the songs but also ventures into pretty advanced free improvised sections, although never losing the focus for a single second.

The life´s story of the Kuhn Brothers is in many respects the story of modern European Jazz from its early days in the mid 1960s. Rolf, who encountered Jazz in the height of the Swing era, turned out to be a virtuoso player performing with American Jazz stars and yet returned to Europe to continue his career. Joachim started at a very early age experimenting with Free Form and Avant-Garde, swiftly becoming one of the leaders of the new European Jazz, which has broken free of the chains imposed by the rigid American tradition and stayed always at the vanguard of the genre. Nevertheless Joachim never underrated the Jazz tradition and if the opportunity called for it, he could play mainstream Jazz or Jazz-Rock Fusion better them most. The brothers kept close ties over the years and recorded numerous albums together, of which this is one of my all time favorites.

There is a telepathic understanding and interplay between the brothers, which is hardly surprising considering their close ties. Rolf plays the "sane", melodic phrases most of the time, whereas Joachim is all over the place with his wild chord structures and arpeggios and the resulting music is simply stunning. Again the Art Of The Duo idiom proves that two great musicians can sound better than an entire symphonic orchestra

Of course there are also the European Jazz characteristics that this music boasts continuously: elegance, sophistication, intelligence and depth. Although seemingly relaxed and modest at first, this music has so much substance and intensity, that even after numerous repetitive listening sessions it reveals new vistas each and every time.

In addition this music was spectacularly recorded by the great Walter QuintusFind albums by this artist, and the sound quality is simply divine. This is an absolute must to very European Jazz / Art Of The Duo connoisseur!

JOACHIM KUHN NEW TRIO / ATOM STRING QUARTET ~ KOMEDA
ACT 9972 (Barcode: 614427997227) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 2022 Released: 2023

This is an album by German Jazz pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and his (not so) New Trio with Canadian bassist Chris JenningsFind albums by this artist and drummer Eric SchaeferFind albums by this artist and the Polish Atom String QuartetFind albums by this artist, which comprises of violinists Dawid LubowiczFind albums by this artist and Mateusz SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist, violist Michal ZaborskiFind albums by this artist and violinist Krzysztof LenczowskiFind albums by this artist. As the title suggests, the album is dedicated to the music of the Godfather of Polish modern Jazz, pianist / composer Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded live at the Berlin Philharmonic, and presents nine tracks, eight of which are Komeda’s compositions and one is a composition by Joachim Kuhn, dedicated to the memory of his older brother (and my Dear Friend) clarinetist / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, who sadly departed almost exactly a year ago.

The seeds of this album were planted almost sixty years ago: in December of 1965, the twenty-one years old Joachim Kuhn was invited to take part in the most important East European Jazz festival at the time, the annual Jazz Jamboree in Warsaw, where he performed with his trio. Kuhn, who still lived in East Germany (DDR or GDR) at the time, was considered a prodigy and a rebellious pioneer, playing Free Jazz / Improvised Music, which for some strange combination of political circumstances, was allowed at the epicenter of Eastern Block’s stern Cultural censorship and oppression, similar in many ways to what happened at the time in the neighboring Socialist States, as far as Jazz Music was concerned. In Warsaw, Kuhn met many Polish Jazz musicians, most importantly Krzysztof Komeda, who also performed at the festival with his quintet. Komeda invited Kuhn to attend the recording session for his epic debut album “AstigmaticFind albums with this title”, which was held a couple of days after the quintet’s appearance and recorded at the same Philharmonic Hall. As a result, Kuhn was among the first people to hear the album and even to discuss the music with Komeda shortly after it was recorded. Less than a year later Kuhn would join his older brother in West Germany and later move to Paris and Komeda would leave for Hollywood, where his cinematic career promised to explode, only to be dead, following a tragic accident, by April 1969. Their musical paths never crossed again but, as said earlier, the seeds of this album were planted.

The link to the Atom String Quartet, Poland’s most versatile, inventive, prestigious and unique string quartet, is also obvious, following the duo album recorded by Joachim Kuhn and Mateusz Smoczynski in 2019, called “Speaking SoundFind albums with this title”, which evidently planted another seed.

I have repeatedly criticized the almost brutal, often opportunistic misuse of Komeda’s music and memory by numerous musicians over the years, which not only did not pay tribute to Komeda’s Genius and revolutionary contribution to European Jazz, but in some cases tarnished it completely. Therefore, it gives me deep pleasure to say that this album beautifully fills all the requirements to serve as an appropriate tribute to Komeda and his legacy.

The carefully selected material depicts both the revolutionary aspects of Komeda’s Avant-Garde approach to Jazz, but also reflects his wonderful lyricism and deep Polish melancholy, which are the base of most of Komeda’s cinematic music. The album offers the entire content of “Astigmatic” (three compositions) and the "Roman II" piece as examples, which reflect the former as well as the beautiful ballads from the soundtracks of Roman PolanskiFind albums by this artist’s movies like “Rosemary’s Baby” or “Knife in the Water”, which reflect the latter.

The idea of using a string quartet as part of the arrangements of Komeda’s music seemed extremely risky at first, especially being exposed in the past to some horrific attempts in that direction, but upon hearing the result my instinctive reservations melted without a trace. Obviously adding individual string instrument soloing is much more straightforward, but Kuhn’s arrangements skillfully utilize the entire quartet to enhance the dramatic effects of the music. Nevertheless, it takes the extraordinary skills of all four “Atoms” to achieve such a level of fusion, like what can be witnessed herein, which emphasizes their unique capabilities.

It seems that Kuhn manages to sound more like Komeda would have liked to sound himself. Komeda’s virtues as a composer and visionary overshadow his role as a piano player and he lacked perhaps the virtuosity and spark as a pianist, which Kuhn certainly has plenty of. As a result, Komeda’s music on this album sounds in many respects more invigorated than ever before, perhaps even elevated to another level by sheer concentration of musical talent and sincerity, which dominates this album. Since I have had the pleasure of hearing every album Kuhn ever recorded, I must say that this album is not only one of his best ever, but also one of his most wholehearted ones. It certainly is a kind of a life circle closure for Kuhn, although I do wish him many more years of successful career and happy life.

Overall, this is a monumental recording for the true Jazz enthusiasts and lovers of the genre. Polish Jazz fans will find here an exquisite reminder of their beloved and legendary pioneer, German Jazz fans will discover a little known chapter in Kuhn’s life, which left a significant mark on his future career, European Jazz lovers will find here everything European Jazz stands for: versatility, innovation, pursuit of excellence and aesthetics and true love of all forms of music, and finally for all Jazz lovers, a beacon of true talent, which is eternal and omnipresent. This is an absolutely essential piece of music in every serious music collection!

ROLF KUHN ~ AFFAIRS
INTUITION 3211 (Barcode: 750447321120) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1997 Released: 1997

Following the recent demise of the great German clarinetist / composer / bandleader and one of the Godfathers of the modern German Jazz, as well as a dear Friend, Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, I decided to dig into my shelves and write about some of his albums I did not review previously.

Kuhn recorded this album with a bunch of friends from the US and Germany, a list that proves his status as one of the most admired Jazz musicians on the international scene. The list includes saxophonists Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist and Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, guitarist Chuck LoebFind albums by this artist, fellow clarinetists Eddie DanielsFind albums by this artist and Buddy DeFrancoFind albums by this artist, trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, bassist Dieter IlgFind albums by this artist and drummer Wolfgang HaffnerFind albums by this artist. The music includes some standards and some original compositions by Kuhn and the participating musicians, altogether ten tracks of great performances, which showcase Kuhn’s versatility playing anything between Swing to Free.

These relaxed sessions are an ideal opportunity to allow the musicians to get the absolute best out of themselves, all supporting Kuhn as the main soloist, who is simply brilliant every step of the way.

Kuhn a sublime example of a total musician, with a career spanning decades and crossing styles from Swing to Avant-Garde, always with grace, intelligence and professionalism beyond reproach. For clarinet lovers, this album is an absolute revelation.

Overall, this an instant classic, full of brilliant music and heavenly performances, which is absolutely perfect from start to finish. Goodbye Friend!

ROLF KUHN ~ CLOSE UP
JAZZWERKSTATT 089 (Barcode: 4250079758487) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2009 Released: 2009

This is the second album by veteran German clarinetist / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist (born 1929) recorded with his sensational new (at the time) quartet, which features also the veteran bassist Johannes FinkFind albums by this artist and two excellent representatives of the young German Jazz scene, guitarist Ronny GraupeFind albums by this artist and drummer Christian LillingerFind albums by this artist. Another young and upcoming German musician, trumpeter Matthias SchrieflFind albums by this artist guests on two tracks. The album presents nine pieces, eight of which are original compositions: five by Kuhn, two by Graupe and one by Fink. The remaining piece is a special arrangement of a standard.

Kuhn´s musical life is almost completely parallel to the entire Jazz lifeline and he is one of the very few musicians, who managed to say "on top of things" for the entire duration of his life up to now. Anybody listening to this music, not aware of Kuhn´s biography, could easily assume that the clarinetist belongs to the same generation as his young quartet members, although they are separated by more that half a Century, which of course is absolutely amazing.

The music is contemporary modern European Jazz, not entirely Free Form and including melodic themes, but performed completely openly, with huge degree of freedom allowed to all the participants. Full of virtuosic contributions by the leader and the rest of the crew, the music flows briskly and is over way too soon. There is not a dull moment on this album and the music is filled with elegance, typical European aesthetics and sophistication.

Kuhn´s clarinet sound is completely unique and beautifully merges the long tradition of the instrument with contemporary approach. He is not only one of the most technically brilliant clarinetists, but more importantly is able to pour his soul into the instrument, producing a most heartwrenching sound, which is simply irresistible.

This album is a must have for all European Jazz enthusiasts, clarinet lovers and connoisseurs of great music. It is recommended to check out this album´s predecessor entitled "RollercoasterFind albums with this title" and the brilliant 2015 release "StereoFind albums with this title", both recorded with the same quartet. Hats off!

ROLF KUHN ~ FEARLESS
MPS 4029759201830 (Barcode: 4029759201830) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2022 Released: 2024

This is the last album by German Jazz icon, clarinetist / composer / bandleader Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, recorded in July 2022, just a couple of months before his passing in August 2022. The music was recorded with his last quartet, which included German pianist Frank ChastenierFind albums by this artist, bassist Lisa WulffFind albums by this artist, and Columbian drummer Tupac MantillaFind albums by this artist, the same lineup that recorded the previous album “Yellow + BlueFind albums with this title” four years earlier. The Cuareim String QuartetFind albums by this artist performs the string arrangements, added on several tracks, which were recorded posthumously. The album presents ten tracks, seven of which are original compositions by Kuhn and three are arrangements of standards. The album offers a stunning sound quality.

Despite the fact that Kuhn was ninety-two years old when this music was recorded, his capability, articulation and general Genius was stronger than most other Jazz musicians in Europe, or even worldwide, at the time. His fascinating and immensely productive career is a testament of his talents, which definitely makes him one of the most important European Jazz musicians of all time, and I count myself extremely lucky having the opportunity to know him closely and hearing him performing live many times. Talking to him was like reading a book about Jazz and beyond and I truly miss him very much.

The music is, not surprisingly, absolutely exquisite, presenting a delicate and perfectly balanced mixture of tradition and modernism, with the three standards serving as reference points to the romantic side of Kuhn’s clarinet playing, and his original compositions, which are cleverly avant-garde, without sounding like it, offer his incredible forward-thinking approach. His clarinet vocabulary is completely unparalleled, which of course every European Jazz listener knows already, and this particular quartet setting serves as an ideal vehicle to express his genius in full.

I have been waiting eagerly for this album, knowing about the recording at the time it was made, and the delay was unnerving. The decision to add the string arrangements, although with only marginal effect of the album as a whole, is also somewhat questionable, and I wonder if Kuhn would have approved of it, although he loved and used string arrangements in his earlier recordings.

Overall, this is a breathtaking, monumental album, which offers a superb last chord, a finale of the long and astounding career of Rolf Kuhn – truly fearless Genius.

ROLF KUHN ~ INSIDE OUT
INTUITION 750447327627 (Barcode: 750447327627) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1999 Released: 1999

This is an exquisite album by German clarinetist / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, one of my all time favorite musicians, recorded in several different lineups and including American guest stars: saxophonists Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist and Lee KonitzFind albums by this artist and also Rolf´s younger brother pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist. The rest of the musicians are members of the younger generation of the German Jazz scene. Together they perform nine tunes, four of which are originals by Rolf Kuhn, three are by Joachim Kuhn, one is by Konitz and the remaining one is a Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist standard. The album was recorded by the legendary sound engineer / producer Walter QuintusFind albums by this artist, owner of CMPFind albums on this label Records, and the sound quality is simply breathtaking.

Kuhn´s clarinet sound, which has been his trademark for decades, is absolutely unique, combining the traditional Jazz approach originating in the early Jazz days and European modernism. Kuhn, who often joins forces with his pianist brother, produced a substantial and consistently excellent body of recorded work over time, which in retrospect is an integral part of the European Jazz and one of its finest facets.

This album is full of beautiful melodies, mostly reflecting the European lyricism and melancholy, superbly executed by all the participants, with many splendid solos and outstanding ensemble playing. The younger musicians seem to have no problem whatsoever to stand shoulder to shoulder with the veterans. Considering the fact that Kuhn was seventy years old when this music was recorded, he manages miraculously to keep his head and soul eternally young!

This album is a classic example of the elegance, sophistication, panache and stylish flair, which characterize European Jazz at its best, and which manage to present relatively mainstream Jazz in a fresh and challenging way. I can´t imagine any true Jazz fan not enjoying this fantastic music, and therefore recommend it wholeheartedly. For clarinet lovers this album is simply beyond essential!

ROLF KUHN ~ INTERNAL EYES
INTUITION 750447332829 (Barcode: 750447332829) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2000 - 2001 Released: 2001

Together they perform ten tunes, five of which are originals by Rolf Kuhn, three are by Mintzer and the remaining two are standards. The album was partly recorded by the legendary sound engineer / producer Walter Quintus and the sound quality is of course excellent.

The music on this album is mostly mainstream Jazz, which pays tribute to the American Jazz tradition, with elegant and sophisticated touches of European Jazz. When Mintzer plays up front, everything sounds American and when Kuhn plays up front everything sounds European, which is hardly surprising. Same can be said about Crona and Solal, who come from two very different Jazz environments. The two tracks that feature Loeb are Fusion oriented. In short this album embraces both the traditional approach and the modern one, treating them both with respect and as a result presents Kuhn as a versatile, relevant figure despite his advanced age.

Kuhn´s clarinet sound, which has been his trademark for decades, is absolutely unique, combining the traditional Jazz approach originating in the early Jazz days and European modernism. Kuhn, who often joins forces with his pianist brother Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, produced a substantial and consistently excellent body of recorded work over time, which in retrospect is an integral part of the European Jazz and one of its finest facets.

This is one of the most accessible and straightforward albums that Kuhn recorded during his extended career and as such is highly recommended to listeners who are not familiar with his work, perhaps serving as an introduction to the Rolf Kuhn universe, which is vast and versatile. Definitely worth exploring!

ROLF KUHN ~ ROLF KUHN FEATURING KLAUS DOLDINGER (MOST PERFECT SOUND EDITION)
UNIVERSAL 602527224770 (Barcode: 602527224770) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1962 Released: 2009

This is a reissue of a fabulous album recorded by German clarinetist / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist upon his return to Germany from his stint in the US, where he achieved his international recognition. He is joined by another upcoming (at the time) German Jazz musician, saxophonist Klaus DoldingerFind albums by this artist, who like Kuhn would be playing one of the leading roles on the German Jazz scene in the years to come. The two soloists are accompanied by German organist Ingfried HoffmannFind albums by this artist and a Dutch rhythm section comprising of bassist Hermann SchoonderwaltFind albums by this artist and drummer Cees SeeFind albums by this artist. Together the quintet performs twelve tunes, one of which is an original composition by Kuhn and the rest are compositions by German Jazz composers (no American standards are used).

The music is almost completely within the Swing idiom, which Kuhn perfected during the years he played in the US, but the sound is somewhat different from the American model: the improvisations are less constrained to the basic melody lines and the combined sound of the clarinet, saxophone and organ is more modern than the sound of typical American Swing combos at the time. There are traces of Bebop on one hand and Rhythm And Blues on the other, and the overall feel of the quintet is fresh and wonderfully sparkling.

Although recorded well over half a Century ago, this music lost absolutely nothing of its charm and intrinsic beauty. The performances are perfect in every way and the wonderful melodies are evergreens, which withstand the passing of time effortlessly. This album is an extraordinary document of the time of its making, beautifully preserved and even enhanced by today´s remastering techniques.

Overall this album is a superb piece of music, which documents the early days of German / European Jazz and enables the listeners to discover the early work of Rolf Kuhn and Klaus Doldinger, two of the brightest European Jazz stars, who made an enormous contribution to the genre over the years. This album is a must for all Kuhn fans and listeners interested in the history of European Jazz, not to mention of course Swing lovers, many if which are still among us, even if they don´t admit it.

ROLF KUHN ~ ROLLERCOASTER
JAZZWERKSTATT 039 (Barcode: 4250079758012) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2008 Released: 2008

This is the debut album by veteran German clarinetist / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist (born 1929) recorded with his sensational new (at the time) quartet, which features also the veteran bassist Johannes FinkFind albums by this artist and two excellent representatives of the young German Jazz scene, guitarist Ronny GraupeFind albums by this artist and drummer Christian LillingerFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine pieces, eight of which are original compositions: six by Kuhn, one by Graupe and one by Kuhn´s younger brother Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist. The remaining piece is a composition by Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist.

The creation of this quartet and the recording of this album mark a remarkable rejuvenation in Kuhn´s extraordinary career. Since his return to Germany in 1962 from his US stint, Kuhn has been on the forefront of European Jazz, taking part in the stylistic development of the genre from Swing to Free Jazz and Improvised Music. It was only natural that Kuhn, whose mindset was always completely separate from his biological age, would decide to play with the new generation of the flourishing German Jazz scene, and of course the decision paid off in full as this album explicitly emphasizes.

The combination between Kuhn´s wonderful clarinet sound, which is still rooted in the Swing tradition, and the modern sound of the younger musicians, creates a beautiful amalgam, which is by far more powerful than the simple sum of its parts. This music still swings beautifully, but also has a lot of space and openness, which allows the musicians to stretch beyond the restrictions of straightforward Jazz and contribute some remarkable musical inventiveness.

As usual, Kuhn´s superb compositions, which are the core of the music, provide ideal vehicles for the quartet to display its qualities in full, both as an ensemble and as individual players. The music is completely absorbing and uplifting on one hand, but also elegant and sophisticated on the other, which of course is everything one might hope for and what makes it so extraordinary.

This album is a must have for all European Jazz enthusiasts, clarinet lovers and connoisseurs of great music. It is recommended to check out the second album entitled "Close UpFind albums with this title" and the brilliant 2015 release "StereoFind albums with this title", both recorded with the same quartet. ROLF KUHN ~ SOLARIUS
EDEL CONTENT 4029759080473 (Barcode: 4029759080473) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1964 Released: 2012

This is a reissue (first time on CD) of the seminal album by legendary German clarinetist / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist (born 1929), recorded with a quintet, which also included his younger brother pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist (born 1944) and bassist Klaus KochFind albums by this artist and two Polish Jazz legends: saxophonist Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist and drummer Czeslaw BartkowskiFind albums by this artist. The album presents six pieces: three original compositions by Rolf Kuhn, two original compositions by Joachim Kuhn and one arrangement of a folk tune.

Over the years this album achieved a legendary status and became a highly sought after collector´s item, because of its political implications, as well as being one of the earliest East European Jazz recordings and an important cornerstone of European Jazz in general. The album was recorded three years after the Berlin Wall, which divided the city until 1989, was constructed and served during that period not only as a symbol of division of Germany into two separate States living in a constant state of political tension, but in fact also as a symbol of the imaginary Iron Curtain, which divided the European Continent into two opposing political camps, engaged in the Cold War, which periodically threatened to become "hot".

Rolf Kuhn left East Germany (or DDR as it was called at the time) in 1950, shortly after Germany was split into two separate states, and moved to West Germany. For several years he lived and performed in the USA, establishing his position as one of the top clarinet players in the world. Upon his return to West Germany he continued his prolific career. Meanwhile his younger brother Joachim Kuhn lived in DDR and led his own trio, which was a pioneering Free Jazz outfit at the time.

The fact that the meeting of the Kuhn brothers captured on this album happened is one of those "against all odds" situations that often happened in East Europe. This was by all means a meeting of the Giants of East European modern Jazz, with Urbaniak arriving from the legendary Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist quintet, Bartkowski from the no less legendary Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist quartet, Koch who played in the Joachim Kuhn trio and finally the two brothers, who despite the age difference are true musical twins.

Together the quintet plays some of the best modern European Jazz ever captured on record, with great melodies expanded into lengthy solos played perfectly by all the musicians involved. Listeners familiar with the Polish Jazz scene will find this music quite similar to the Komeda and Namyslowski albums receded around that time, which present the same formula and even sound very similar to this album. Rolf Kuhn plays some of the best Jazz clarinet ever and no true Jazz connoisseur can honestly afford not to have this album in his collection.

The rapport and incredible telepathic communication between these musicians, as well as the incredibly tight musical environment that pushed the players to their limits resulted in one of the all time best Jazz albums recorded in East Europe, which lost absolutely nothing of its beauty and incredible power in the five decades that passed since.

They don´t make music like that any more, which means this is an absolute must and an essential piece of music history!

Side Note: As all the East European countries under the Socialist regime, East Germany, or DDR as it was known at the time, had only one state owned and controlled Music Company, which released most of its productions on the AmigaFind albums on this label label. Among the many Amiga releases the legendary "orange J" series was dedicated to Jazz recordings, many of which were licenses from the West, but others were original productions, mostly of Jazz made in DDR. Some of these releases, like the one described above, were absolute gems.

Following the unification of Germany, the Amiga albums disappeared from the face of the earth and only in 2012 a German label reissued 15 Amiga Jazz albums on CD. They are all worth checking out!

ROLF KUHN ~ SPOTLIGHTS
MPS 4029759114260 (Barcode: 4029759114260) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016

This is a phenomenal album by veteran German clarinetist / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, one of my all time favorite musicians. It presents thirteen duos, trios and quartet pieces recorded with a group of wonderful musicians: oboist Albrecht MayerFind albums by this artist, Croatian cellist Asja ValcicFind albums by this artist, drummer Christian LillingerFind albums by this artist, Brazilian vocalist Ed MottaFind albums by this artist and Brazilian bandolinist Hamilton de HolandaFind albums by this artist, Rolf´s brother pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, bassist Oliver PotratzFind albums by this artist and percussionist Volker GreveFind albums by this artist. Kuhn composed nine of the pieces on this album, de Holanda composed one piece and three are standards. The last (bonus) piece on the album features Rolf´s debut recording as a piano player, which means that it´s never too late for debuts.

The music presents a wide scope of genres, including Jazz of course, but also contemporary Classical and World music. The focus is of course on the intimate conversations Kuhn gets involved in with his guests, which are in fact more important than the actual music which is being played. Fresh and unusual duets between clarinet and oboe / cello / bandolim / piano / voice are a tremendous breath of fresh air, and when delivered by a Master of the class of Kuhn, they become simply divine. After decades of playing music Kuhn still finds the spark of genius to make his music stand out and be innovate, explore uncharted territory and dare. Kuhn defeats the chronology and glides elegantly from one genre to another, playfully exchanging phrases with his partners, like a young musician who just discovered the depth and beauty of music.

For the connoisseurs familiar with Kuhn´s music, this album will be definitely a revelation. It is completely different form anything he recorded earlier, including the duet albums he recorded with his brother Joachim Kuhn. It is obvious Kuhn had a lot of fun and joy recording this music, as the atmosphere is incredibly relaxed and warm, which of course immediately reflects on the music.

Overall this is one of the nicest albums recorded in 2016 that landed on my desk and listening to it was an immense pleasure, which I am sure all listeners will share with me. Considering the fact that 2016 was a truly vicious year, which took from us an unthinkable number of great musicians, one should be even happier to enjoy the music of those who are still with us.

Thank you Rolf for all those years of great music you shared with us and I pray to be able to listen to many new records you will record in the years to come.

ROLF KUHN ~ YELLOW + BLUE
MPS 4029759127451 (Barcode: 4029759127451) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2018 Released: 2018

This is a sensational new album on the MPSFind albums on this label label by the veteran German Jazz clarinetist / composer / bandleader Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, one of the great pioneers of European Jazz, aged 88 at the time of the recording. The album was recorded in a quartet setting with German pianist Frank ChastenierFind albums by this artist, young bassist Lisa WulffFind albums by this artist and Columbian (sharing his time between Hamburg and NY) drummer Tupac MantillaFind albums by this artist. Together they perform eleven compositions, six of which are original compositions by Kuhn and five are his interpretations of standards.

The music on this album is split between a continuation of the direction found on several previous Kuhn albums released on MPS, which is represented by the original material and a more melodic, relaxed and sentimental approach, which is evident in the interpretations of the standards. The album opens and closes with two standards, which define the musical framework, with the remaining standard is inserted more or less in the middle, creating an interlude between two sets of more complex and open music. This dual and even contrasting approach creates a wonderful tension and diversity within the music, clearly pointing out the fact that genres and stylistic differences in Jazz are its strength.

Kuhn´s playing on this album is as lucid, precise and virtuosic as always, which fills my heart with joy. I have had the immense pleasure of hosting Rolf as the resident Artist during the 2017 Singer Jazz Festival, which gave me not only an opportunity to listen to his superb playing in many different settings, but also to catch up on our life´s stories in the last decades, talking for hours on end, lamenting mutual friends now gone and reminiscing about the European Jazz history. His vitality, despite the age limitations, is truly astounding.

Of course the other members of the quartet perform superbly as well, moving between the mainstream standard interpretations and highly improvised original material with ease, flair and elegance, typical of European Jazz musicians.

This album is an instant classic, a work a great Master, which defines the epitome of Jazz; a right mixture of emotional involvement and intellectual creativity, which Kuhn represents since decades. The mixture of Avant Garde and tradition, created with such great taste, is a rare opportunity to learn how great albums are made. Thank you my dear Friend for this gift of music, which you have so graciously shared with us for so long. God bless!

ROLF KUHN GROUP ~ TOTAL SPACE
MPS 602527224794 (Barcode: 602527224794) ~ GERMANY ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2009

This is a reissue / remaster of an album by the German clarinetists / composer / bandleader Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, recorded with an octet, which includes some of the best European Jazz musicians active at the time, like his younger brother pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Gerd DudekFind albums by this artist, trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, Danish bassist Bo StiefFind albums by this artist, Swiss drummer Daniel HumairFind albums by this artist and Danish drummer Kasper WindingFind albums by this artist. The album presents five tracks, four composed by Rolf Kuhn and one by Mangelsdorff.

The album is an outstanding example of European Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion and with the powerful sound created by the octet with the double drums and the brass instruments overdubbed to create what Rolf Kuhn describes as a “Brass Band”, the entire album offers an orchestral effect, full of blood-chilling and absolutely unique results, in many ways probably exposing the very peak of the Fusion creativity, which are amongst the most interesting ever recorded. This album is in fact a close companion to the other Rolf Kuhn orchestral Fusion album “Symphonic SwampfireFind albums with this title”.

The music is based on strong melodic themes, wonderfully arranged for the orchestral environment, multilayered and even multi-rhythmic, emphasizing the complex sound of the orchestra as a complete music-making unit, rather than mostly just accompanying the soloists. By the time this music was recorded, European Jazz was heavily involved with Fusion, which is superbly incorporated within the orchestral sound, with electric guitar and keyboards being an integral part of the ambience. For guitar lovers, this is one of the finest albums featuring the brilliant guitar artistry of Catherine, as well as the electric side of Joachim Kuhn.

Rolf Kuhn emerges here as a brilliant composer and arranger of orchestral Jazz, as well as a musician able to develop in time and embrace new trends and expand his horizons constantly, which characterized him for his entire lifetime, which I was lucky to follow for many years during our friendship.

Overall, this is one of the most interesting orchestral Jazz albums in European Jazz, despite the fact that it is only known by relatively very few Jazz listeners. I have owned a copy since day one and listened to this album countless times in the almost fifty years since it was released, and each and every time I managed to discover something new in the music. I can only hope some more listeners will discover it one day, although admittedly it is quite difficult to find a copy.

The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.

In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.

Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.

In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.

Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

ROLF KUHN / JOACHIM KUHN ~ RE-UNION IN BERLIN
B.FREE 6271 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1965 Released: 2016

This is a reissue of a legendary album by brothers: clarinetist Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist and pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist recorded in a quartet setting with bassist Klaus KochFind albums by this artist and drummer Reinhard SchwartzFind albums by this artist originally released in 1965 by CBSFind albums on this label in West Germany. Joachim Kuhn, Koch and Schwartz formed the Joachim Kuhn TrioFind albums by this artist, the first modern / Free Jazz group in East Germany. Rolf, the older brother, who lived at the time in West Germany, joins the trio to form a sensational quartet, recording this, one of the pivotal modern German / European Jazz albums. The album presents five original compositions, three composed by Joachim and two by Rolf, recorded at the renowned Amiga Studios in East Berlin.

The music is a fascinating mixture of tradition and modernism, with Rolf exploring completely novel approach to the clarinet and Joachim developing his advanced harmonic structures, which were about to turn him into one of the greatest pioneers of European Jazz. This album and the "SolariusFind albums with this title" album recorded a year earlier and released on the AmigaFind albums on this label label constitute the early iconic recordings by the Kuhn BrothersFind albums by this artist, which to this very day sound absolutely stunning and lost nothing of their power of expression and historic significance.

As usual in such circumstances, it is truly amazing that this music, which signifies the freedom of expression and intellectual liberty, was recorded at the heart of the most oppressive regime behind the Iron Curtain, similar to the numerous other Free Jazz recordings released by the East German Amiga label. This phenomenon deserves a serious historical study, which strangely has not been tried so far.

For connoisseurs of early European Free Jazz and listeners interested in the development of Jazz in Europe, this album is an absolute must have. But of course the album offers sublime music, which any serious Jazz fan anywhere on this planet should be able to enjoy and appreciate, regardless of its historic significance. A true gem!

ROLF + JOACHIM KUHN QUARTET ~ IMPRESSIONS OF NEW YORK
MPS 600753227572 (Barcode: 600753227572) ~ GERMANY ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2009

This is a reissue / remaster of the legendary album by the German Kuhn Brothers, clarinetists / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist and pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist. The quartet includes also American bassist Jimmy GarrisonFind albums by this artist and Italian drummer Aldo RomanoFind albums by this artist. The album presents two tracks, corresponding to the two sides of the original LP, which are in fact four parts of a suite, which gave the album its name. All the music was co-composed by the both brothers.

Following the unification of the Kuhn Brothers in West Germany, with Joachim leaving the DDR and moving to West Germany, they were invited to perform at the legendary Newport Jazz Festival. Their performance was witnessed by the legendary producer Bob ThieleFind albums by this artist, who invited them to record this album on his iconic Impulse!Find albums on this label label. The album was recorded on July 27, 1967, just a few days following the death and funeral of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, which the brothers attended, and which had a tremendous impact on the music on this album, considering the fact that Coltrane was the most revered American musician and an instigator of Free Jazz / Improvised Music, as well as the fact that Coltrane’s bassist played on it. This album was the first Impulse! release to feature German Jazz Musicians. The Kuhn Brothers recorded another album for Impulse! some forty-four years later, called “LifelineFind albums with this title”.

The album is an outstanding example of early European Free Jazz / Improvised Music, of the absolutely highest standard and imagination, which took the seeds of American Free Jazz of the period and took them to another plane, way more sophisticated, Artistic and imaginative. The performances are blood-chilling and absolutely unique, in many ways probably exposing the very peak of the Jazz creativity, which to be honest never managed to climb much higher than what can be heard here.

Rolf Kuhn is for me the true hero of this session, considering the fact that he was deeply rooted in American Swing and Mainstream, playing in the US for many years, and yet managed to detach himself from that tradition in such a radical way, which is way more difficult than plunging into Improvising Music straight on, like his younger brother. Obviously, the comparison of his clarinet performances herein with Coltrane’s saxophone playing is immediately a point of interest, as are the piano parts against those of Coltrane’s pianists. Rolf’s death almost two years ago (2022) was a huge personal loss for me, since we have been Friends for so many years and I truly admired his talent and wisdom.

Overall, this is one of the most pivotal Jazz albums in European Jazz, despite the fact that it is only known by relatively very few Jazz listeners. I have owned a copy since day one and listened to this album countless times in the almost sixty years since it was released, and each and every time I managed to discover something new in the music. ROLF KUHN TRIO ~ AS TIME GOES BY
BLUE FLAME 40292 (Barcode: 4002587402921) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1989 Released: 1991

This is an album by legendary German Jazz clarinetist / composer / bandleader Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, recorded in the intimate trio setting with his younger brother, pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and bassist Detlev BeierFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tracks, two of which are original compositions by Rolf Kuhn, another two by Joachim Kuhn, one is co-composed by them and two are standards. The album was brilliantly recorded by Walter QuintusFind albums by this artist, at the legendary CMPFind albums on this label studio.

The music is an ideal amalgam of composed and improvised music, based on composed themes and then expanded by lengthy improvisations by all three musicians. It offers a relatively rare opportunity to hear the clarinet in the modern / Free Jazz environment, as well as get exposed to the brilliant work by Beier, who is definitely one of the finest German bass virtuosos, which is plainly evident herein.

All three musicians have plenty of opportunity to expose their masterly skills and the telepathic rapport between them is absolutely stunning. Rolf’s sweet tone and heart-melting melodicism are perfectly matched by his improvisational skills and the intrinsic freedom, which are unmatched. I feel lucky to have been able to experience so many hours of his brilliant performances in person over the years and listening to this album vividly brings back memories of his presence, which I often miss.

Joachim is, of course, as brilliant as always and his arpeggios and uncontainable fluidity fill the space behind his brother’s melodic statements, while Beier supplies, mind you all by himself, all the rhythmic support needed and more.

Overall, this is one of the most beloved albums by Ralf Kuhn in my collection (and I have all of them of course). Brilliantly melodic, and Free spirited at the same time, this is Jazz as its most naked, striking form, which is completely timeless and everlasting. Miss you, my Friend!

The album´s liner notes are completely uninformative about all the relevant details, like who plays what, who composed what and when the music was record, which is a gross negligence. At least it states that the album was engineered by the legendary Walter QuintusFind albums by this artist, and it sounds accordingly amazing.

Aged 85 at the time this music was recorded, Kuhn seems to be younger and more vigorous musically then all his contemporaries, and to be honest most other musicians way younger then him. This quartet incorporates two young Berlin based musicians, who are considered to be representatives of the "now" German Jazz scene, mostly playing extreme contemporary Avant-Garde (Graupe and Lillinger were members of Hyperactive KidFind albums by this artist now known as Gropper / Graupe / LillingerFind albums by this artist trio). Fink is a representative of the mid-generation and also mostly associated with Free Jazz. The sheer audacity to play along these musicians, many decades younger than him, and feel completely integrated with them makes Kuhn an absolute marvel.

The music is completely up to date, amalgamating Free Jazz, some electronics, Avant-Garde and Jazz tradition. This is probably the most experimental album Kuhn ever recorded, even though he often flirted with Free Jazz during his extensive career. His presence influences Graupe and Lillinger to actually play melody and rhythm, which they almost never do in their organic environment. This means that although the music is very adventurous, it is completely coherent and accessible even to listeners who have little experience with music of this kind earlier on.

More experienced listeners will discover a whole new universe of music herein, with layer upon layer of complexity and ingenuity. The individual statements and the interplay between the quartet members are among the most marvelous musical moments of contemporary European Jazz, which has no parallels. This music is beyond time and space and takes the listener on a voyage of endless possibilities.

The life and work of Rolf Kuhn are a wonderful example of the limitless power of talent and mind over obstacles and limitations. His illustrious recorded legacy is an endless source of sublime musical pleasures and this album is simply the jewel in the crown, the cherry on top, the top of the heap… Thank you Rolf for so many years of musical joys; Hats off and may you live forever!

EMIL MANGELSDORFF & ALBERT MANGELSDORFF ~ EARLY DISCOVERIES
SWR JAZZHAUS 459 (Barcode: 730099045957) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1953 - 1963 Released: 2018

This is a wonderful archive album by Godfathers of German Jazz, brothers Emil MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist (saxophone) and Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist (trombone). The 2CD album presents live ad studio recordings from the vaults of the German SWR broadcasting corporation, captured between 1953 and 1963 and produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. The various combos include the who’s who of the pioneering German Jazz musicians of the post WWII era, such as saxophonists Joki FreundFind albums by this artist, Hans KollerFind albums by this artist (Austrian resident in Germany) and Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist, clarinetist Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, bassist Peter TrunkFind albums by this artist, drummer Joe NayFind albums by this artist and many others.

The first CD presets twelve tracks recorded by the Albert Mangelsdorff quintet from 1961, which plays four original compositions by Albert Mangelsdorff and eight standards. The music offers the glimpse of how European Jazz musicians interpreted the American Jazz tradition, mostly Bebop influenced, nearing the inevitable departure towards the more advanced modern European Jazz.

The second CD presents three tracks by the German All Stars twelve-piece band (with Mangelsdorff brothers as members), all composed by Freund, and one track by the Albert Mangelsdorff / Peter Trunk duo composed by Albert Mangelsdorff, all recorded in 1963. Next come four tracks by the Joki Freund sextet (with Mangelsdorff brothers as members) playing four original compositions by Freund, recorded in 1957. This is followed by a track by the 1956 version of the German All Stars band, followed by another duo track by Albert Mangelsdorff and Hungarian (resident in Germany) guitarist Attila ZollerFind albums by this artist, recorded in 1953. The last three tracks offer a super-rare appearance by the Austrian pianist Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist recorded in 1957, before his departure to the US and world fame.

All the music is excellently recorded and offers a superb glimpse at the German Jazz scene at the late 1950s / early 1960s, when the European Jazz scene was making its formative first steps towards the independence from the American tradition, after mastering its trademarks. There is a plethora of wonderful solos and ensemble performances present, as well as examples of Albert Mangelsdorff’s love of the duo format, which dominated his entire career.

Overall this is a brilliant document of the era and a must to all European Jazz fans, interested in the history and the process of its development. Wholeheartedly recommended!

OFF THE RECORD ~ THE CALL
OUT OF THE SHED ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2021 Released: 2022

This is the debut album by the European Jazz quartet Off The RecordFind albums by this artist, led by German guitarist / composer Ronny GraupeFind albums by this artist, which also includes Polish vibraphonist Dominik BukowskiFind albums by this artist, British bassist Phil DonkinFind albums by this artist and German drummer Oliver SteidleFind albums by this artist. The album presents fifteen original compositions, all by the leader, first five and last nine grouped into two “mini-suites” and one solitary tune separating them.

Graupe first came to my attention as a member of the (then) new quartet led by Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, which included two young German Jazz musicians. I followed his career via his later recordings for the excellent WhyPlayJazzFind albums on this label label, which documents the burgeoning young German scene, of which Steidle is also an important member. Bukowski is of course an old acquaintance and surely one of the very best European vibraphone players since many years. I am less informed of the activities of Donkin, although he seems to be frantically busy as well, but somehow his albums never reached me so far.

The music is an excellent example of contemporary European Jazz, which is highly imaginative, exploring and inventive, rhythmically liberated and free-spirited, and yet completely coherent, and to some degree melody based. Guitar and vibraphone playing together always take me back five decades back to the prophetic Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist / Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist quartet recordings, which were Fusion precursors but never actually played Fusion per se, exactly what happens here. There is perhaps just a tinge of Fusiony moments, but none of its drudgery.

The individual and group performances are of course stellar, but nothing less should be expected from these highly experienced musicians. Graupe made an excellent choice by taking Bukowski aboard, creating a magical amalgam not only of sounds but more importantly of ideas. The polyrhythmic pulsations delivered by the rhythm section fit this music like a glove and are a true delight from start to finish.

Overall, this is European Jazz at its best, sophisticated and emotional, organized and free all in the best measures. This is definitely a piece of music modern Jazz lovers should put their hands on, with no regrets or hesitation whatsoever. Years of hard work and persistence pay off in music, and when combined with great amounts of talent, they work wonders.

SHQ ~ [S+H]Q + FRIENDS
INDIES HAPPY TRAILS 731 (Barcode: 8595026673120) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1964 - 1965 Released: 2016

This is the fourth of a series of eight reissue / archival albums presenting the recorded legacy of one of the Godfathers of Czechoslovak modern Jazz, vibraphonist / pianist / saxophonist / composer / bandleader Karel VelebnyFind albums by this artist and his SHQFind albums by this artist ensemble. All the music is beautifully remastered and the album comes with extensive liner notes, extremely well researched and full of discographical information, sadly only in Czech language (which works fine for me, but probably less so for other enthusiasts who also might be interested).

This album presents material captured during three recording sessions from November 1964. The eight tracks that were recorded during these sessions were released as the second SHQ LP, shortly after the release of the debut.

The SHQ lineup on these sessions included the basic quintet with Velebny, who played vibraphone and piano, tenor / baritone saxophonist / flautist Jan KonopasekFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Laco DecziFind albums by this artist, bassist Jan ArnetFind albums by this artist and drummer Laco TroppFind albums by this artist, which was extended by a plethora of other musicians to form lineups varying from a septet to a thirteen piece band, which included: guitarist Rudolf DasekFind albums by this artist, trombonist Zdenek PulecFind albums by this artist, bassist Jiri MrazFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. George MrazFind albums by this artist), East German (at the time) pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and many others.

The bonus tracks include three rare recording from 1965 of a short-lived SHQ quartet lineup comprising of Velebny, Dasek, Mraz and drummer Milan MadarFind albums by this artist and one track recorded in 1964 by the quintet lineup above, all released on a Various Artist compilation LP or a SHQ compilation LP.

The music, similarly to the debut album, includes mostly American standards, with just two original compositions (one each by Dasek and Velebny), but this time the large ensemble arrangements take the music quite away from its Bebop origins, and shows more sophisticated approach to orchestration and harmonic structures, bringing back the music to its European base. The bonus tracks are in contrast mostly original and point towards future development of the SHQ identity.

As expected the performances are phenomenal and with the presence of the formidable guests the music shows a much wider scope of local Czechoslovak talent and beyond. In retrospect the list of the names is a sad indication of the tragic fate of Czechoslovak Jazz, which resulted in many of its finest musicians fleeing their homeland. For example both Konopasek and Mraz fled to US, Kuhn fled to West Germany to join his older brother Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist and additional famous Czech musicians like Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist, Jan HammerFind albums by this artist and others did the same, before the "Velvet Revolution" finally freed Czechoslovakia from the Socialist shackles.

For fans of European Jazz and its history, the entire series is an absolute must, and the fact that most of this music is available on CD for the first time makes it an absolute treasure. Absolutely brilliant!

My personal thanks to Jaromir KratochvilFind albums by this artist, the owner of Indies Happy TrailsFind albums on this label, for his friendship and the incredible job he is doing to keep this music alive!
Side Note
Since the 1950s Czechoslovakia had a highly developed Jazz scene, certainly in proportion to its population, which included many successful ensembles and even Big Bands, as well as Jazz clubs, festivals and publications, all this in spite of state censorship and political limitations. The similar situation existed since the 1960s as far as Rock (including Progressive Rock and Jazz-Rock Fusion) was concerned, resulting in many excellent, interesting and innovative ensembles.

The music was relatively well documented by the three state owned record labels: SupraphonFind albums on this label (founded in 1927), PantonFind albums on this label (founded in 1968) and OpusFind albums on this label (founded in 1971 and based in Bratislava, created on the base of Slovak division of Supraphon). Following the "Velvet Revolution" in 1989, the state owned record labels were privatized, with Supraphon dominating the local market.

However, Supraphon was quite reluctant as far as exploring its vast back catalogue is concerned, and this is where the small independent Indies Happy TrailsFind albums on this label Records, a reissue label dedicated to the preservation of the recorded legacy of Czechoslovak music, owned and run by the devoted enthusiast / historian Jaromir KratochvilFind albums by this artist, founded in 2007, comes in. Over the years the label released a plethora of brilliant music, reissuing long deleted LPs and extensively exploring the archives in search of bonus material.

The quest of Indies Happy Trails is similar to what the GADFind albums on this label Records label, run by Michal WilczynskiFind albums by this artist, is doing for Polish music, with similar consistency and praiseworthy dedication.

VARIOUS ARTISTS ~ POLISH RADIO JAZZ ARCHIVES VOL.20
POLSKIE RADIO 1872 (Barcode: 5907812248727) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1964 Released: 2015

This is the twentieth installment in the new series of releases initiated by the Polish Radio, which presents archive Jazz recordings. Radio recordings are always a fabulous source of remarkable material, and as far as Polish Jazz history is concerned, the Polish Radio, which was a state monopoly for 45 years, recorded over time a plethora of invaluable material, which apart from the albums released by the Polskie Nagrania record company (also a state monopoly), is the only available additional source of Polish Jazz recordings. For many years Polish Radio recorded concerts presented during Poland´s most important Jazz venues, including the annual Jazz Jamboree Festival and many other festivals as well.

The ten tracks collected here were recorded during the seventh Jazz Jamboree Festival, which took place between October 24 and 26 1964 in Warsaw. The music was performed by four different ensembles, which are: a quartet led by the German brothers Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist on clarinet and Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist on piano with Polish rhythm section consisting of bassists Tadeusz WojcikFind albums by this artist or Juliusz SandeckiFind albums by this artist (here misspelled as Julian) and drummer Andrzej DabrowskiFind albums by this artist (four tracks), a trio led by Hungarian bass virtuoso Aladar PegeFind albums by this artist with Polish pianist Wojciech KarolakFind albums by this artist and drummer Andrzej Dabrowski (also four tracks), a quintet led by Polish pianist / composer Andrzej TrzaskowskiFind albums by this artist with trumpeter Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Janusz MuniakFind albums by this artist, bassist Jacek OstaszewskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Adam JedrzejowskiFind albums by this artist (one track only) and finally a trio led by Dutch pianist Pim JacobsFind albums by this artist with his brother Ruud JacobsFind albums by this artist on bass and guitarist Wim OvergaauwFind albums by this artist (also one track only).

Most of the music consists of standards and the only original material is one piece by Rolf Kuhn and the only track by the Trzaskowski quintet, which was composed by Stanko and which is absolutely the best and most interesting track on this album.

The beautifully restored sound quality is excellent and the warm ambience of the analog recording is a true joy. As usual with this series, which is very reasonably priced, I miss the presence of "in depth" liner notes / booklet, which should convey the circumstances at which this music was recorded and its importance to the development of Jazz in Poland. Nevertheless this is an absolutely essential piece of Jazz history which every Jazz fan will surely consider an absolute must.

EBERHARD WEBER ~ ONCE UPON A TIME
ECM 2699 (Barcode: 602438331369) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1994 Released: 2021

This is a live solo bass album by the great German Jazz bassist / composer / bandleader Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist, one of the Godfathers of modern German Jazz. Recorded in 1994, the album was released only in 2021, and is so far the last Weber’s album on the ECMFind albums on this label label. The album presents seven tracks, six of which are original compositions by Weber and one is a standard. He plays electric upright bass and utilizes some electronic sound manipulation.

Weber’s collected recorded discography marks him as one of the most prolific and universal European Jazz bassists of all time. His unmistakable, highly melodic bass sound and sublime compositions are instantly recognizable and have been a source of joy for music lovers since the mid-1960s, when he shaped the modern German Jazz scene Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist, Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist and others. Later on he also became the bassist of choice for many American Jazz musicians and of course led his own ensembles for several decades. I had been lucky to hear him perform on many occasions and his is absolutely unique each and every time.

Solo bass albums are often ridiculed and considered as sign of vanity by the bassist who record them, which of course sometimes is justified, but in some extraordinary cases, like this one, they can be truly divine. Weber is not only a great virtuoso, but more importantly he is a superb songweaver, which turns off of his soli into fully melodic, complete compositions. This album exemplifies this phenomenon perfectly, and anybody listening to this music will not miss anything else to be present beyond Weber’s bass.

Overall, this is truly music from out of this world, harmony of the spheres, angel’s lament or whatever else that comes to one’s mind when hearing Weber touch his bass. The entire album, from start to finish, is an uninterrupted orgy of pleasure, as if he was playing directly on the strings of the listener’s soul. It is one of those unrepeatable moments, and thank God it was caught for eternity for us to enjoy! This is way beyond just recommendable, it is absolutely essential!

LISA WULFF ~ WONDROUS STRANGE
LAIKA 4011786183609 (Barcode: 4011786183609) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2018

This is the second album by young German bassist / composer Lisa WulffFind albums by this artist and her quartet, which includes saxophonist Adrian HanackFind albums by this artist, pianist Martin TerensFind albums by this artist and drummer Silvan StraussFind albums by this artist. Vocalist Birgid JansenFind albums by this artist guests on two tracks. The album presents ten original compositions, all by Wulff, including the lyrics used in one song.

Wulff came to my attention due to her appearance on the last album ("Yellow + BlueFind albums with this title") by my dear friend Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, who always keeps his ears open for talented young musicians. Wulff´s work on that album was beyond reproach and I decided to investigate further.

The music on this album is typical contemporary European Jazz, which amalgamates the Jazz tradition with World Music influences and other contemporary music forms. Although melody based, it is open and allows freedom of expression to all the quartet members and leaves enough breathing space for the music to flow beyond rigid structures. The transformation between melodic, swinging parts and freely improvised sections is natural and organic, and shows the maturity and experience of all band members. The scale and diversity of the compositions reflects well on Wulff´s compositional abilities.

The quartet´s performances are excellent as well. Obviously Wulff gets relatively more exposure than normally reserved for bass players, but noting too exaggerated. She plays acoustic uprights bass and electric soprano bass guitar, which allow her to change the voicing of her playing from one tune to another. The bass guitar parts often sound groovy, but again all within good taste. Her acoustic performances are definitely my favorite.

Both Hanack and Terens play interesting solo parts, as well as contribute collectively in the background when needed. They can be soft and romantic and wild and searching, which of course adds to the diversity and interest. Strauss is a bit too busy at times and too high in the mix to my liking, but that´s a minor point. Jansen sings vocalese on one song and lyrics on another, which add relatively little to the overall context of the album.

My only problem with this album is the sound, which is muddled and harsh at times, especially the drum parts, which is not up to par with the usual sound quality of German recordings. Of course it might be just me…

Overall this is an excellent piece of music, interesting, sometimes even challenging, and full of great melodies and excellent playing. Definitely something to keep on one´s watch list!
