  | PHIL MILLER / IN CAHOOTS ~ OUT OF THE BLUE CRESCENT 05 (Barcode: 604388476626) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene Recorded: 2000 Released: 2000
Guitarist / composer Phil MillerFind albums by this artist and his In CahootsFind albums by this artist ensemble have been a consistently excellent source of great music for many years. This album is very special in their discography, as Phil wrote the music for this album during the period when his brother, pianist Steve MillerFind albums by this artist became ill with the cancer which eventually killed him in December of 1998. Phil had originally hoped that Steve would play on the recording but, as his illness progressed, that ceased to be a possibility. In a way this album is a tribute to Steve and is dedicated to his memory. This is a real return to roots for Phil, harking back to earlier days when he, Steve and Pip played together in DeliveryFind albums by this artist, a band which leaned heavily on the blues for its starting point and it coincides with CuneiformFind albums on this label Records re-release of the Delivery album Fools MeetingFind albums with this title. It represents something of a departure for Phil, being his first venture into the blues for 30 years. The writing is simpler and there is more of a groove in the rhythm section. The usual In Cahoots sextet line up of Phil Miller - guitar and guitar synthesizer, Fred BakerFind albums by this artist - fretless bass guitar, Elton DeanFind albums by this artist - alto sax and saxello, Peter LemerFind albums by this artist - keyboards, Jim DvorakFind albums by this artist - trumpet and Pip PyleFind albums by this artist - drums is augmented by Doug BoyleFind albums by this artist on guitar. Excellent music from start to finish, which of course is not surprising for a band that keeps delivering one great album after another.

  | UNIVERS ZERO ~ HERESIE CUNEIFORM 029 ~ BELGIUM ~ Progressive Rock
2nd album from 1979. One of the `darkest` recordings ever made and a great example of the fascinating modern chamber music incorporating rock elements. Univers Zero are often described as a combination of the best elements of Magma and King Crimson, which puts them in a very special league. Heavily influenced by 20th century neo-classical and modernist music.

  | MIRIODOR ~ 3RD WARNING CUNEIFORM 032 (Barcode: 045775003221) ~ CANADA ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1991 Released: 1991
3rd album (recorded 1991) by the Canadian RIO trio MiriodorFind albums by this artist. In spite of the limitations set by their small format, the group manages to create a varied and rich sound, mostly by using synthesizers in addition to the main instruments they play (piano, sax and percussion). The music is unpredictable and therefore wonderfully surprising, with melodies and tempos changing at neckbreaking speed and freequency. Inspired by their European counterparts, they create a truly unique Canadian musical voice.

  | MILLER, PHIL ~ DIGGING IN CUNEIFORM 034 ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene
Legendary guitarist Phil Miller recorded this album in 1991 with his regular companions, also known as `In Cahoots` (Baker, Lemer & Pyle). The music here is much more jazz oriented here that Miller`s adventures with the top Prog Canterbury ensembles (Hatfield, National Health), but his unmistakable brilliance and tone are all here for us to enjoy. Phil is a unique guitarist and this album proves it yet again.

  | SOFT MACHINE ~ SPACED CUNEIFORM 090 ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene Recorded: 1969
Soft MachineFind albums by this artist were one of the most influential Prog bands of all times. The group kept changing through the years, from an early psychedelic style via a long period of free improvisational jazzy music right back to Jazz-Rock Fusion, but it was always on the edge and miles ahead of the rest. This recording presents a strange piece of music composed originally for a ballet performance.

  | BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH ~ TRAVELLING SOMEWHERE CUNEIFORM 152 (Barcode: 045775015224) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1973 Released: 2001
The saga of the British ensemble Brotherhood Of BreathFind albums by this artist and their leader pianist / composer Chris McGregorFind albums by this artist stretches back in time and space to South Africa in the early-1960s, where McGregor founded the first mixed-race Jazz group in the country, the Blue NotesFind albums by this artist. For the Apartheid regime mixed-race groups were hardly a welcome activity and the group suffered many hardships and found it difficult to perform for the white public. In 1964 the group got permission to travel to Europe and eventually arrived in London, where they decided to stay. The Blue Notes played around UK initially as a sextet (McGregor – piano, Dudu PukwanaFind albums by this artist – alto sax, Nick MoyakeFind albums by this artist – tenor sax, Mongezi FezaFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Johnny DyaniFind albums by this artist – bass and Louis MoholoFind albums by this artist – drums) and later as a quintet (after Moyake returned to SA). In spite of the fact that they were one of the most innovative and inspiring Jazz acts at the time, they never achieved proper recognition. The pioneering work of Jazz-World Fusion, with the emphasis on African music, which the group presented, was surely quite ahead of its time. By the early 1970s McGregor managed to form a large ensemble, combining the Blue Notes players with some of the most prominent British Jazz musicians of the time, which was called Brotherhood Of Breath. The resulting ensemble was surely one of the highlights of the British Jazz scene in the early to mid-1970s, offering an incredibly powerful stage act, which included a superb amalgam of modern Jazz, Free, Improvised Music and strong African music influence. The ensemble recorded but a few studio albums, but luckily many of their splendid concerts were recorded by radio stations and festivals, mostly around Europe, where they were always received warmly. This album documents a performance captured by the German Radio Bremen and is a superb example of what they were all about. The lineup (which changed slightly over time) includes: Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist, Marc CharigFind albums by this artist and Mongezi Feza – trumpet, Nick EvansFind albums by this artist and Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist – trombone, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist, Dudu Pukwana and Gary WindoFind albums by this artist – saxophone, Chris McGregor – piano, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist – bass and Louis Moholo – drums. | RAY RUSSELL ~ GOODBYE SVENGALI CUNEIFORM 223 ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Ray Russell is one of the most interesting figures on the UK music scene. He is responsible for some pioneering guitar work in the late 1960’s / early 1970’s in several proto-Prog and early Jazz-Rock groups (see Rock Workshop) and later fusion innovations with his group RMS during the 1980’s. While in RMS, Russell met the legendary arranger Gil Evans, who also performed and recorded with the group. This album is inspired and dedicated to Gil Evans (“Svengali” was his nickname in the jazz circles). The material includes one historical recording with Gil Evans from 1988, which is believed to be Gil’s final recording session (he died soon after). The rest of the album includes compositions inspired by Evans and performed by a mighty set of musicians, including Simon Phillips and Mo Foster from RMS, Gary Husband and many others. Ray displays his guitar pyrotechnics all along, proving once again that he is far from retirement.

  | SOFT MACHINE ~ GRIDES CUNEIFORM 230/231 (Barcode: 045775023021) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2006
The Soft MachineFind albums by this artist archives keep offering new treasures on a pretty regular basis, taking the fans by surprise time after time. This album offers a live recording in Amsterdam from October 1970 (with the classic lineup Elton DeanFind albums by this artist, Hugh HopperFind albums by this artist, Mike RatledgeFind albums by this artist and Robert WyattFind albums by this artist), shortly after the release of ThirdFind albums with this title. The material includes some of the material from Third and early versions of material from the forthcoming FourthFind albums with this title. As usual with SM, although we all heard these tunes before, they do play them quite dramatically differently each time, so there is no fear of redundancy. In addition, this time the sound quality is truly great. As if the newly discovered materiel was no enough, this release also includes a 20 minutes DVD filmed in 1971 by Radio Bremen (at the same day when the VirtuallyFind albums with this title album material was recorded, but a different set). This is the first ever SM DVD material, which of course should make all the SM fans ecstatic. Essential to all SM fans and Canterbury aficionados!

  | HARRY MILLER / ISIPINGO ~ WHICH WAY NOW CUNEIFORM 233 (Barcode: 045775023328) ~ UK ~ Jazz Released: 2006
Originally from South Africa, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist was one of the main forces on the UK jazz scene in the 1970s. He recorded and performed with all the major players during that period (John SurmanFind albums by this artist, CentipedeFind albums by this artist, Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, Keith TippettFind albums by this artist, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, King CrimsonFind albums by this artist, Julie TippettsFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and Chris McGregorFind albums by this artist´s Brotherhood Of BreathFind albums by this artist) and his contributions were very significant in the development on that wonderfully diverse and prolific period. He and his wife founded the legendary OgunFind albums on this label label, which released many of that period’s essential recordings and documented the scene probably more efficiently than any other UK label at the time. Miller’s sextet IsipingoFind albums by this artist (Nick EvansFind albums by this artist - trombone, Mongezi FezaFind albums by this artist - trumpet, Harry Miller - double bass, Louis MoholoFind albums by this artist - drums, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist - alto sax and Keith TippettFind albums by this artist - piano) recorded only one studio album and therefore this high-quality recording from 1975 by Radio Bremen is an invaluable addition to both Miller’s discography and the overall documentation of this illustrious period in UK jazz. The music is somewhat similar to the output of Chris McGregor´s Brotherhood of Breath (as is the group’s lineup), which played a special kind of jazz strongly influenced by Africa music, called “kwela”. Isipingo is just a bit more on the jazzy side of things. For the many fans of 1970s UK jazz this is a must of course.

  | NEBELNEST ~ ZEPTO CUNEIFORM 234 (Barcode: 045775023427) ~ FRANCE ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006
3rd album by the excellent French RIO band NebelnestFind albums by this artist. Reduced to a trio, with the original guitarist making a guest appearance, the band produces more of their dark Symphonic Prog, with strong RIO elements. There are long improvised passages and use of dissonance, all of this well framed in the scope of the compositions. The pace of the album is quite relentless and the music intense and complex. Some influences from the early RIO bands (like MagmaFind albums by this artist) can be found occasionally, but most of the material is completely original. The more adventurous Prog listeners should enjoy this stuff immensely and the only pity is that the band produces a new album only every four years.

  | SOFT MACHINE ~ MIDDLE EARTH MASTERS CUNEIFORM 235 (Barcode: 045775023526) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene Recorded: 1967 - 1968 Released: 2006
Although the last decade witnessed an abundance of live Soft MachineFind albums by this artist releases, it is always welcome to discover yet another piece of the mysterious musical phenomenon that surrounded this band. Soon after the band was formed in 1966 and even before the first album was recorded they lost Daevid AllenFind albums by this artist and the remaining trio (Kevin AyersFind albums by this artist, Mike RatledgeFind albums by this artist and Robert WyattFind albums by this artist) carried on with their unique psychedelic sound and vision. The music contained on this album presents the band live at the legendary London’s Middle Earth club (the successor of the no less legendary UFO club). Two sessions, one from late 1967 and the other from early 1968, recorded by the experimental sound technician Bob WoolfordFind albums by this artist, remained completely forgotten for almost 40 years, to be recently unearthed by (or rather for) the owner of CuneiformFind albums on this label Records, who is a restless SM aficionado. Considering the sound quality of the original recording, some painstaking efforts have been made to restore this music to an audible quality and maintain the atmosphere of the original setting. The result is quite impressive and although the vocal parts are badly under-recorded the entire set has its magic, especially the sound of fuzz organ being pounded mercilessly during the extended instrumental improvisations. For the many SM fans, this is a unique document of the early days and a key factor in understanding the band’s development.

2nd album by Hugh HopperFind albums by this artist (and the first release after he left Soft MachineFind albums by this artist), released originally on the tiny Norwegian Compendium label (same label that originally released Henry CowFind albums by this artist’s ConcertsFind albums with this title and other weird but wonderful music). Musically the album belongs very strongly to the Soft Machine experimental Jazz-Rock of the ThirdFind albums by this artist, FourthFind albums with this title, FiveFind albums with this title & SixFind albums by this artist period (when Hopper was still a member of the group). Hopper enlisted eight great musicians (Mark CharigFind albums by this artist, Elton DeanFind albums by this artist, Dave StewartFind albums by this artist, Gary WindoFind albums by this artist and others), all members of the flourishing Canterbury scene and UK Jazz circles (members in groups like Brotherhood Of BreathFind albums by this artist, GilgameshFind albums by this artist, Hatfield And The NorthFind albums by this artist, IsotopeFind albums by this artist, Keith TippettFind albums by this artist Sextet, etc), who make up the duos, trios, quartets and quintets that play on this album. He wrote all the music, except one track, which was composed by Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist. This album is considered Hopper’s most consistent release ever and sounds as fresh today as when it was first recorded. For all Canterbury scene and SM fans this is an absolute must and it’s a great joy to see this album available again. Brilliant stuff!

This extraordinary album contains a previously unreleased recording of Graham CollierFind albums by this artist’s Big Band performance of his suite “Hoarded Dreams”. The music was commissioned by the Arts Council of Great Britain (UK Government body that over the years faithfully supported UK Jazz scene and provided endless opportunities for UK musicians to compose and record) for the 1983 edition of the Bracknell Jazz Festival. This extraordinary reissue project brings back to life the recording legacy the cooperation between of two of the legendary figures of the UK Avant-Garde scene: pianist Steve MillerFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Lol CoxhillFind albums by this artist. It spans the years 1971 to 1974 and includes the two albums they recorded together as well as additional live material by the duo, solo pieces by Miller and the group DeliveryFind albums by this artist of which they were both members. Except for the Delivery recordings, which was the prototype of the Canterbury scene to develop later into groups like CaravanFind albums by this artist, Soft MachineFind albums by this artist, Hatfield And The NorthFind albums by this artist and many more, most of the material is very experimental and Avant-Garde, which would characterize the direction Coxhill was to pursue later on, when he became an integral collaborator to the UK Free Jazz scene. Additional musicians include such Canterbury scene icons as Steve’s brother Phil MillerFind albums by this artist (guitar), Richard SinclairFind albums by this artist (bass), Pip PyleFind albums by this artist (drums), Robert WyattFind albums by this artist (percussion) and others. This is by no means easy listening stuff, but those music lovers, who are ready to make the special effort and undertake the intellectual challenge to penetrate this complex mesh of creativity, are in for a treat. 6th album by the excellent Italian group Deus Ex MachinaFind albums by this artist recorded and filmed (as it comes with an accompanying DVD) at the Paris club "Le Triton", famous for its association with Prog, RIO and Jazz. The club has a recording studio on the premises, which enables recording both studio and live material in high quality. The group, fronted by the incredible singer Alberto PirasFind albums by this artist, whose voice is of truly operatic quality, plays a strange mixture of Jazz-Rock Fusion, RIO and Avant-Garde, completely unique and amazing. The lyrics are both in Italian and Latin (they were all Latin on their previous album "CinqueFind albums with this title") and were written by Piras; the music was all composed by guitarist Maurino CollinaFind albums by this artist and keyboardist Fabrizio PuglisiFind albums by this artist. The DVD includes a complete live concert filmed at the club as well as other bonus material like interviews with the band members and earlier video clips going back to the early days of the group in the 1990s. A must for RIO and Fusion enthusiasts alike and considering the success of their previous album, very little encouragement is needed to make people go for this one.

This splendid recording by the legendary British Jazz ensemble Brotherhood Of BreathFind albums by this artist, led by pianist / composer Chris McGregorFind albums by this artist, captures the band at the Berliner Jazztage festival and presents the initial phase in their development as one of the most original and influential bands of the era. The lineup (which kept changing slightly over time) includes: Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist and Marc CharigFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Nick EvansFind albums by this artist and Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist – trombone, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, Dudu PukwanaFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and Gary WindoFind albums by this artist – saxophone, Chris McGregor – piano, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist – bass and Louis MoholoFind albums by this artist – drums. Relatively little known and surely deserving more recognition, the British Jazz-Rock Fusion band IsotopeFind albums by this artist, led by guitarist Gary BoyleFind albums by this artist, recorded just 3 albums between 1974 and 1976, and these were soon out of general circulation. The only live recordings by the band available so far were the BBC sessions on HuxFind albums on this label Records, and therefore this collection of live material is a most welcome addition to the band´s recorded legacy. Recorded between 1974 and 1975, the material captures the second incarnation of the band, which included Boyle on guitar, Laurence ScottFind albums by this artist on keyboards, ex-Soft MachineFind albums by this artist bassist / composer Hugh HopperFind albums by this artist and drummer Nigel MorrisFind albums by this artist. Percussionist Aureo de SouzaFind albums by this artist was also a member of the band for several months, and the full quintet appears here for the first time on record. The three dates include a Radio Bremen performance (the Radio Bremen is a superb source of material for 1970s British music, second only to the BBC), the only US tour Isotope made in 1975 and an earlier UK recording from 1974. The music includes some of the material recorded on the 2nd Isotope album "IllusionFind albums with this title" and other pieces previously unheard, composed mostly by Boyle and Hopper. For Isotope fans this is an absolute delight, but any fun of the 1970s British Jazz-Rock scene will find this material indispensible.

11th release by the extraordinary Belgian ensemble Univers ZeroFind albums by this artist, surely one of the most innovative, revolutionary and prophetic music makers in contemporary music history, which presents for the first time archival material of previously unreleased live recordings. These recordings capture the last two lineups of the ensemble in the mid-1980s, before the band´s long sabbatical: the quintet which recorded "UzedFind albums with this title" in 1984 and the septet which recorded "HeatwaveFind albums with this title" in 1986. The bands unique ability to combine contemporary classical influences with Jazz, Rock and Improvised Music is a momentous testimony of music´s cross-genre validity and conceptual pollination. The ensemble´s leader and principal composer drummer Daniel DenisFind albums by this artist is blessed not only with exceptional talents as a musician, but also with the persistence and feeling of apostolic urge to "spread the gospel" against all odds. Although the music of Univers Zero is primarily known only to a tiny group of music connoisseurs around the world, its true significance is colossal and it will undoubtedly stay in the Pantheon of everlasting musical achievement. | TATVAMASI ~ PARTS OF THE ENTIRETY CUNEIFORM 371 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion Recorded: 2013 Released: 2013
This is the debut album by Polish quartet TatvamasiFind albums by this artist, led by guitarist Grzegorz LesiakFind albums by this artist, which also includes saxophonist Tomasz PiatekFind albums by this artist, bassist Lukasz DownarFind albums by this artist and drummer Krzysztof RedasFind albums by this artist. The album comprises of seven original instrumental pieces, all composed by the leader and was released by the prestigious US CuneiformFind albums on this label label, one of the world´s leading labels specializing in new cross-genre music, with an impressive catalogue of releases. This makes Tatvamasi one of the very few young Polish groups to earn international attention already with their debut album, which is quite impressive.
Although the leader´s background and personal history spin a fascinating tale, the listener should judge the music as it presents itself herein. A cross-genre creation indeed, this music escapes classification and easy categorization, which is actually quite a common phenomenon, especially among the young Polish ensembles, which surprisingly pop up on the local scene with astounding vitality and incredible talent. Tatvamasi are no different and again it´s almost impossible to believe that this is a debut recording and a work of such young artists.
The music shows traces of what started many decades ago as British Jazz-Rock Fusion, amalgamating Jazzy improvisation and Rocky rhythmic patterns. Of course this music is as contemporary as it gets, standing firmly within today´s music as far as the overall ambience and dynamics are concerned, paying respectful tribute to its origins. But beyond Jazz–Rock there are plenty of other influences present, often very diverse from each other, like Punk, World Music, Ambient, Minimalism and of course Free Jazz and Improvised Music. Considering the fact that this music was recorded practically live in the studio with no overdubs and other studio wizardry, what we hear is what happened, with the creative flow being captured on the fly.
The personal contributions by the four musicians are all commendable; the leader weaves some truly beautiful melody lines and memorable riffs; the saxophonists manages to float high above during his improvisations and the rhythm section keeps the often difficult music in check, driving the dynamics and leading the way securely through the many twists and turns.
The album is a breeze of fresh air and a great fun to listen to. The diversity of the pieces, which are mostly quite extensive, keep the listener on his toes at all times. There is so much happening here that several listening sessions are necessary to really "get" this music at its full bloom. Of course listeners used to improvised music will be able to appreciate this music instantly.
This is a most impressive debut release, promising interesting future and establishing once more the Polish scene as one of the leading sources of new and fascinating music. Very well done indeed!

  | SOFT MACHINE ~ THE DUTCH LESSON CUNEIFORM 490/491 (Barcode: 045775049021) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1973 Released: 2023
This is an archival live album by the iconic British Prog / Fusion group Soft MachineFind albums by this artist, recorded in Rotterdam on October 26, 1973. At the time this recording was made Soft Machine consisted of saxophonist / oboist / pianist Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Mike RatledgeFind albums by this artist, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist. The 2CD album presents fifteen tracks, all composed or co-composed by the group members.
The group released the album “SevenFind albums with this title” before this concert was recorded, but none of the material from that album, except for one track, does not appear on this live album. One of the tracks that would appear on their next album “BundlesFind albums with this title” is also present, and the rest of the material originates mostly from “SixFind albums with this title”.
The music is mostly Jazz-Rock Fusion oriented, with lengthy tracks (in three cases over ten minutes in duration), with a double keyboards and dense rhythm section dominating the proceedings. Some hypnotic / Psychedelic moments are also present and there are definitely no dull moments for the entire duration. The sound quality is admittedly quite good for a live amateurish recording originating in the seventies. Although the album itself offers very little previously unheard aspects of the Soft Machine phenomenon, every second of their music, especially in such sound quality, is always welcome. Every time when one thinks the sources have been exhausted, some new recording pops out, which adds to the enormous live recording legacy by Soft Machine, mostly released by the CuneiformFind albums on this label label.
Overall, this is an excellent addition to the recorded legacy by one of the most important groups in British Prog / Fusion history, which despite the fact that it was recorded fifty years before being now released, is still completely valid and offers imaginative, ambitious music. An absolute must, of course, to the many Soft Machine completists, and quality music connoisseurs the world over. Considering the fact that Soft Machine still exists and I will hear them perform very soon, obviously adds to the joy of listening to this album.

This is a reissue of one of the most iconic British Jazz albums in all time, the only studio album by the saxophone trio comprising of Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist (tenor saxophone / drums / percussion), Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist (alto saxophone) and John SurmanFind albums by this artist (baritone and soprano saxophones / bass clarinet / synthesizers). The album presents eight original compositions, co-credited to all three members of the trio.
I vividly remember the first time when I listened to this album in 1975, being completely knocked out of my socks. The sheer chutzpah by these three musicians doing something so unheard of, playing music galactically remote from anything around, boldly combining the entire Jazz legacy into a completely new universe, and most importantly not giving a toss about what the critics will say (more about this later), was nearly an out-of-body experience. I knew them personally and heard them playing live quite often, but this album was truly something else.
The trio came together many months before the studio album was recorded and their early work together can be found on the appropriately titled “Looking For The Next OneFind albums with this title” live album, released on CuneiformFind albums on this label Records in 2013. The time spent gigging together polished their act and level of interplay and by the time they entered the studio, they were completely a three-headed one-minded musical unit.
All three players were already established and highly regarded figures on the British Jazz scene at the time, taking an active role in the revolution, which led to the creation of the new, modern British Jazz, emancipated from the American Jazz traditions and limitations. But the meeting of the trio sparked a new level of creativity and “out of the box” thinking, like Surman’s fascination with synthesizers and creating layers of background sound, which he utilizes to this very day. The complexity of simultaneous triple soloing and harmonizing is staggering and has very few parallels to this very day.
The new album’s packaging features several reviews of the album, published at the time of its release, and beautifully portrays the rigidness and ridiculous conservatism the British music press suffered from at the time, which opposed the revolutionary trends bitterly.
Overall, this is a timeless Masterpiece in the purest meaning of the term. The music is still absolutely fresh and stunning, losing absolutely nothing of its ingenuity, brilliance and spirituality. In retrospect it sounds even more beautiful than it did at the time of its creation, probably due to the fact that we have been exposed to so much bad music over time, that this sounds like honey in the ears. I’d go as far as saying that anybody who did not hear this album, did not hear British Jazz at its absolute best.

  | TATVAMASI ~ THE HOUSE OF WORDS REQUIEM 103 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion Recorded: 2014 Released: 2015
This is the second album by Polish ensemble TatvamasiFind albums by this artist, led by guitarist Grzegorz LesiakFind albums by this artist, which also includes saxophonist Tomasz PiatekFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Jan MichalecFind albums by this artist, bassist Lukasz DownarFind albums by this artist and drummer Krzysztof RedasFind albums by this artist. The album consists of four lengthy compositions, all by Lesiak. Although not entirely unambiguous, it seems the music was recorded "live in the studio" as it includes applause, but the sound has all the characteristics of a studio recording, contrary to the statement that it was recorded during an open air concert.
Following their sensational debut album released on the American CuneiformFind albums on this label label, Tatvamasi continue their tale of success and manage to produce another piece of music, which is fascinating and highly original. The lineup, extended to quintet with the addition of the trumpeter, has more instrumental possibilities and skillfully uses that advantage on this album. All members of the ensemble contribute superb solo parts and participate in the group interplay amicably and intelligently.
The music, as usual with Tatvamasi, is quite beyond classification stylistically and merges many different cross-genre elements, mostly World Music melodic lines and repetitive chant-like progression, Rocky rhythmic patterns and Jazz improvisation. Lesiak´s guitar playing also uses electronic and ambient sound effects. The amalgamated sound produces a trance inducing environment, which allows the soloists to spread their wings and extrapolate into their personal dimensions. Hypnotic and absorbing, this music is simply irresistible.
In contrast to the three soloists, the rhythm section shows a remarkable restrain, simply driving the music skillfully ahead, but not drawing the listener´s attention away from the centerpiece. Nevertheless their contribution is an absolutely essential piece of the music, which would have been impossible without it.
Tatvamasi successfully pass the "second album" test with flying colors and hopefully will continue to produce more of their unique music in the future. As usual in such cases I can´t wait to hear their next album and in the meantime I invite every connoisseur of unusual, challenging music to get hold of a copy of this gem. Well done!
