  | AGNIESZKA HEKIERT ~ STORIES UNIVERSAL 028947651475 (Barcode: 028947651475) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2012 Released: 2012
Polish Jazz vocalist / composer Agnieszka HekiertFind albums by this artist, who combines the careers of a vocalist and a successful vocal coach for TV reality shows, released this album eight years after her last release called "Night And Day SwingFind albums with this title", which she recorded with the pianist / composer Krzysztof HerdzinFind albums by this artist and his trio. In the meantime she also recorded the "European ImpressionsFind albums with this title" album with my dear friend, the great Polish saxophonist / composer Leszek ZadloFind albums by this artist, which unfortunately remains unreleased so far. From that session she carried over the Bulgarian pianist / composer Konstantin KostovFind albums by this artist (who studied with another friend of mine, the Russian pianist / composer Leonid TschischikFind albums by this artist, now living and teaching in Germany), who is her closest collaborator on this album. The other musicians, who constitute the piano trio on this album, are bassist Robert KubiszynFind albums by this artist and drummer Cezary KonradFind albums by this artist. Guest appearances also include Herdzin on flute (yes I smiled too), vocalist Kuba BadachFind albums by this artist and the superb Atom String QuartetFind albums by this artist.
The album includes twelve songs, four of which are Kostov / Hekiert originals, another four are by Hekiert or feature her lyrics, one is a standard, one is a song by StingFind albums by this artist, another one by Polish vocalist KayahFind albums by this artist and the last of mysterious Far East source (sic!); overall quite a mishmash of styles and influences, which are unified by the arrangements (the arranger is not listed) and excellent performances by the piano trio. Kostov is a brilliant player, which is evident both on his solo spots and his skillful accompaniment, and so are of course veterans Kubiszyn and Konrad.
Hekiert is a talented vocalist, singing lyrics and vocalese with obvious ease and technical proficiency. Most of the vocals are in Polish, which of course is highly commendable, with few exceptions, which are unfortunately less impressive. Overall the vocal parts are kept within very safe limits of mainstream Jazz, which is somewhat lacking, as she obviously could have taken a few more risks and less obvious choices. Perhaps the fact that the album was released by Universal signifies an attempt to produce a much wider accessible music? In any case compared to some truly exciting vocal albums released in 2012 in Poland, this one sadly does not challenge any of them.
Connoisseurs of vocal Jazz will find this a pleasant listening experience, with excellent instrumental parts and professional vocal performances, no less and no more.

  | WORLD ORCHESTRA ~ LIVE IN GDANSK UNIVERSAL 028948107599 (Barcode: 028948107599) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2011 Released: 2013
The World Orchestra is a brainchild of Polish Jazz saxophonist / composer Grzech PiotrowskiFind albums by this artist, who managed to create an international ensemble of dozens of musicians from all over the world, which performs a sort of Jazz-World Fusion music, based on melodic themes with strong ethnic flavors. This album presents a live recording by the World Orchestra, featuring some world-famous World Music artists, like the Bulgarian kaval player Theodosii SpassovFind albums by this artist, Finnish kantele player Sinikka LangelandFind albums by this artist, the Bulgarian Voices AngeliteFind albums by this artist choir and many others. Polish artists included Atom String QuartetFind albums by this artist, pianist Marcin WasilewskiFind albums by this artist and a large orchestra; all in all 84 (according to the liner notes) musicians on one stage. They perform fourteen pieces, most of which were composed by Piotrowski, with a few exceptions.
Although the logistics behind this project must have been staggering and the basic idea of combining musical cultures is definitely commendable, the overall result is very problematic. There is no common bond linking the different pieces together, no thematic thread, not even a loosely devised common denominator. As a result each of the pieces more or less works on its own, but is not connected to anything before and after it and the entire concert becomes a sort of tribute to different folkloristic themes, but not more. Although all the musicians involved are true masters of their respective trade, the lush orchestral arrangements and the ambience of Smooth Jazz floating above create a typical overproduced easy-listening music, which keeps the brain in a state of blissful lethargy.
This kind of domesticated World Music is very popular since it is accessible to large crowds, who would definitely have a problem to stomach some authentic Folklore and need the sugary envelope to be able to swallow it. Of course one can wonder is this is the correct way to bring new musical thrills to people, but that becomes a question of moral / artistic choices.
The CD is accompanied by a DVD of the same concert, which adds no additional music beyond the contents of the CD and is therefore completely redundant.

The Dutch Blues-Rock scene in the late 1960s / early 1970s was definitely the strongest on the Continent and second only to the British scene at the time. The band Cuby And The BlizzardsFind albums by this artist was the undeniable king of the scene. Led by vocalist / harmonica player Harry MuskeeFind albums by this artist, a.k.a. Cuby, the band changed its lineup many times over the years, but always featured exceptional players, especially lead guitarists. | TOMASZ STANKO ~ EGZEKUTOR (SOUNDTRACK) UNIVERSAL 044001434723 (Barcode: 044001434723) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2001 Released: 2001
Polish trumpet virtuoso / composer Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist is universally recognized as one of world´s top Jazz musicians since many years. However, his contributions as composer of music for cinema is somewhat lesser known, which is a pity. Stanko´s work in that area started way back to the early 1970s, but even earlier, when he was a member of the legendary Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist ensemble, he already became intimate with the art of writing for cinema from his mentor, who was one of the greatest soundtrack creators ever, mostly known for his work for Roman PolanskiFind albums by this artist. It is therefore understandable that Stanko´s music for films would become heavily influenced by Komeda´s approach, which culminates with this soundtrack, written to a brilliant film by Polish director Filip ZylberFind albums by this artist. In fact this is the second time Stanko contributes the soundtrack to a film by Zylber, with "A Farewell To MariaFind albums with this title" being the predecessor to this one. Stanko is accompanied by some impressive players on this album, most notably by singer Justyna SteczkowskaFind albums by this artist, who contributes some breathtaking vocalese parts. Also present are Janusz SkowronFind albums by this artist on synthesizer, Slawomir KurkiewiczFind albums by this artist on bass, Michal MiskiewiczFind albums by this artist on drums, and Zbigniew BrysiakFind albums by this artist on percussion, as well as a string quartet. But Stanko´s trumpet dominates this music completely and overwhelmingly, when it plays completely solo or is accompanied by other instruments. Stanko´s virtuosity and magic sound are truly magnificent and supported by the atmospheric and often melancholic melodic motifs, the overall effect is simply stunning. It is a rare occasion when a soundtrack stand alone as a full fledged Jazz album, and this is a superb example of this being the case. I can only say that every Stanko fan should try and listen to this album, even if finding it today, only 10 years after it was released, is virtually impossible. The album was released as a double set with a CD and DVD Audio (Surround Sound) version of the music, which present different mixes of the same music. An absolute must!

  | JOACHIM KUHN ~ UNIVERSAL TIME UNIVERSAL 044001667121 (Barcode: 044001667121) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 2001 Released: 2002
This is an album by German pianist / composer / bandleader Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, recorded in a trio setting with American bassist Scott ColleyFind albums by this artist and Cuban drummer Horacio HernandezFind albums by this artist. French saxophonist / bass clarinetist Michel PortalFind albums by this artist and American saxophonist Chris PotterFind albums by this artist guest on selected tracks. The album presents eleven tracks, nine composed by Kuhn and two by Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist. Kuhn plays piano on nine tracks and saxophone on two tracks.
The music is a brilliant example of modern European Jazz with a large degree of Freedom and Improvisation, but based on strictly and brilliantly composed themes. The lineup shifts between trio, quartet and quintet settings, and allows wonderful interplay between these exceptional musicians. Kuhn is undoubtedly one of the most unique and innovative European Jazz musicians, and this album, as in fact all of his recordings, clearly show why.
Kuhn dominates the proceedings with his virtuosic piano parts, mostly played at a hyper-fast tempo, but all the musicians get a chance to solo and show their chops, and the excellent rhythm section manages to keep standard time most of the time. For me, Kuhn is one of the greatest and most talented weavers of wonderful melodies, and this album is full of these.
Overall, this is a superb album and sadly one of the lesser known in the extensive recorded legacy by Kuhn, which is absolutely worth being discovered, although it is not easy to be found these days. The hair-raising virtuosity of Kuhn has but a few equals in modern Jazz and he never recorded an album, which is not worthy of an honorable place in a serious modern Jazz record collection.

  | METTE JUUL ~ CHANGE UNIVERSAL 060257796101 (Barcode: 060257796101) ~ DENMARK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2019 Released: 2019
This is the fourth album by Danish Jazz singer / guitarist / songwriter Mette JuulFind albums by this artist recorded with a team of excellent musicians: Swedish bassist Lars DanielssonFind albums by this artist and Danish keyboardist Heine HansenFind albums by this artist who play on most of the tracks and three guitarists playing on selected tracks: Swedish Ulf WakeniusFind albums by this artist (three tracks), Israeli Gilad HekselmanFind albums by this artist (two tracks) and Danish Per MollehojFind albums by this artist (one track). The album presents thirteen tracks, five of which are written or co-written by Juul and the rest are her interpretations of standards.
The music is a collection of intimate trio, duo and solo performances, completely acoustic and minimalist, with the "more is less" attitude clearly in mind. The bass and piano trio sessions are kept in a classic vocal Jazz atmosphere, whereas the solo and duo tracks with the guitarist have a slightly Folksier ambience.
The material is carefully selected to suit Juul´s vocal abilities, which allows her to be relaxed and feel herself for the entire duration of the album. As usual for a non-native English speaker the accent and pronunciation are evidently "foreign" (well Scandinavian obviously), but in this case it is rather charming than obtrusive. The vocal stylistics and mannerisms are somewhat similar to those of the great Karin Krog, which of course is meant as a compliment.
The instrumental performances are of course perfect in every respect. Both the trios and the duos with the guitarists keep the focus on the vocalist accompanying her amicably and creating the appropriate ambience rather than being dominant. In the age when making music is usually associated with overloading the listener´s ears with a wall of synthetic noise, such modest and delicate approach is most welcome and commendable.
Overall this is wonderful, subtle and delicate piece of music, which is full of great instrumental performances and heartfelt vocals, superb choice of songs and a straightforward, honest delivery, despite its sophistication and artistry. Warmly recommended!

  | HERMETO PASCOAL ~ A MUSICA LIVRE DE HERMETO PASCOAL UNIVERSAL 4988031427828 (Barcode: 4988031427828) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 1973 Released: 2021
This is a reissue of the second album by the Brazilian Jazz multi-instrumentalist / composer / bandleader Hermeto PascoalFind albums by this artist. Recorded with several of the best Brazilian instrumentalist at the time and an orchestra. The album presents six tracks, three of which were composed by Pascoal and the remaining three by other Brazilian composers / songwriters.
The music is a magical amalgam of Pop, Brazilian Folklore and Jazz, beautifully arranged by Pascoal, creating often complex musical vistas and orchestral sound. The album is an excellent example of the depth of Brazilian music, and of course the Genius of Pascoal, which are way beyond the simplistic image of Samba and Bossa Nova, which most people associate with music originating in Brazil.
The players are of course all excellent, and the music flows fluently, featuring many short, but superb solos by the musicians involved. The music is brilliantly arranged and orchestrated by Pascoal and there is not a dull moment on this album, from start to finish.
Overall, this is an excellent example of Brazilian Jazz-World Fusion, which offers a diverse collection of musical trends, brilliantly arranged and performed by some of the best Brazilian musician, all under the watchful eye / ear of Hermeto Pascoal, who is one of the greatest musical Geniuses on this planet.

  | DIDIER LOCKWOOD ~ GLOBE-TROTTER UNIVERSAL 602498093245 (Barcode: 602498093245) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2003 Released: 2003
This is a wonderful double album by veteran French violinist / composer Didier LockwoodFind albums by this artist, one of the Masters of the French Jazz Violin School. The first CD presents Lockwood in a quartet setting with organist Benoit SourisseFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Stephane GuillaumeFind albums by this artist and drummer Andre CharlierFind albums by this artist and a few guest artists. Together they perform ten original compositions, five by Lockwood, three by Sourisse and one each by Guillaume and Charlier. The second CD presents seventeen short pieces performed on solo violin, all composed by Lockwood.
The music is strongly influenced by World Music elements, as suggested by the album´s title, and incorporates both melodic and rhythmic ingredients from many different folk sources. Everything is executed with typical French elegance and finesse and Lockwood proves that he is still at the top of his creative powers. The typical French sound of violin and Hammond organ, which was born with the early Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist´s trio with Eddy LouissFind albums by this artist on organ in the late 1960s, is still one of the most exciting and aesthetically fulfilling approaches in European Jazz and Lockwood skillfully repeats that approach here.
The solo violin pieces are a delightful journey into the world of solo violin. The pieces were recorded live during Lockwood´s performances on the stages around the world and collected here to be presented as a kaleidoscope of musical pieces influenced by many different places and Cultures. Lockwood uses synthesizers and other electronic devices to accompany him on these pieces, but they are essentially solo violin performances, which are all cleanly breathtaking. This CD is simply a text book of modern violin playing and should be studied by all young musicians learning to play that instrument.
This is definitely a most gratifying album in every respect and an absolute must for the Jazz violin fans and all lovers of European Jazz at its best.

  | PINK FREUD ~ PUNK FREUD UNIVERSAL 602517235328 (Barcode: 602517235328) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2005 Released: 2008
This is the 5th album (and the first on UniversalFind albums on this label) by Polish ensemble Pink FreudFind albums by this artist, which managed to gain considerable popularity on the local scene, both with Jazz and non-Jazz listeners and critics alike. Formed in 1998 by bassist / composer Wojtek MazolewskiFind albums by this artist, the group changed its lineup several times over the years but succeeded to maintain its popularity and gradually achieved a cult following and a large fan base. Musically the group offers a unique amalgam of genres and musical directions, originating with Jazz and improvisation, but also encompassing elements of Punk Rock, dub, jungle, drum and bass and electronic music. In many respects it is a direct continuation of the Yass movement, which flourished in Poland in the 1990s, and could be referred to as post-Yass. Since Yass was initially intended as an expression of rebellion against the established Jazz canons, which many young musicians felt to be stagnant, post-Yass took the rebellion a bit further out, emphasizing the cross-genre trend, groove and even dance elements, which resulted in the music being much more widely accessible. As opposed to the intellectual image that Jazz is usually associated with, this music is intelligent fun music, with some Jazz associations, and should be treated as such, no more and no less. On this album Pink Freud appear as trio with the leader and two other founding members: trumpeter Tomasz ZietekFind albums by this artist and drummer Kuba StaruszkiewiczFind albums by this artist. Saxophonist Tomasz DudaFind albums by this artist appears on five of the ten tracks and two female strings players guest on two of the tracks. Nine of the ten tracks on this album are original compositions by the participants and the last track is their interpretation of a Charles MingusFind albums by this artist tune. The music is a typical Pink Freud mix of musical ideas, stylistically all over the place, but unified by the highly energetic and expressive delivery. The music definitely retains the rebellious spirit and often lacks the precision and flawlessness a Jazz fan might expect, but one must not forget this music is not about these qualities at all and therefore should not be judged by them. The ultimate question is the overall impression and effect this music has on a listener and if it is successful to make the listener spend an hour having fun while listening, it achieved its goal. Let´s make no mistakes here; parts of this music are quite complex and advanced, requiring attentive listening and seriously challenging the listener´s ear. Some listeners will mentally "skip" these parts at first, but might (hopefully) discover them later. Regardless of what one might think about Pink Freud and their music, one thing is sure: they can not be ignored. Definitely worth investigating!

  | ANNA MARIA JOPEK ~ ID (POLISH EDITION) UNIVERSAL 602517348424 (Barcode: 602517348424) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2006 - 2007 Released: 2007
Twelve brilliant albums in just ten years are surely an awe-inspiring record for even a most accomplished musician. Polish singer / composer / lyricist extraordinare Anna Maria JopekFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. AMJFind albums by this artist) seems to be unstoppable in her continuous path towards a secure position in the Pantheon of contemporary Jazz vocal achievements. Classically trained (at The Warsaw Music Academy) as a concert pianist, her Jazz singing was a second career opportunity, inspired by her stint at the Manhattan School of Music. The world of Jazz opened an entire new universe, which she embraced wholeheartedly and never looked back. Stars certainly smiled upon her as her career in her native Poland literally exploded, with her albums reaching Gold and Platinum sales one after another.
Her big international break happened when Pat MethenyFind albums by this artist agreed to record an album with AMJ entitled "UpojenieFind albums with this title" (note also Metheny’s memorable cooperation with Israeli singer NoaFind albums by this artist a.k.a. Achinoam NiniFind albums by this artist). This opened a gate for AMJ to cooperate with many more world-class musicians, as demonstrated on this album. AMJ sings mostly songs she either wrote herself or were written by her husband / musical soul mate Marcin KydrynskiFind albums by this artist. Over the years the couple created a vast songbook, which deserves praise and admiration for it’s consistent quality. This album is in many respects a glorious expansion of AMJ’s already remarkable accomplishments.
The creative process took over a year until fruition, with recordings in studios located across Poland, Paris and New York, with tragic personal events lurking in the background, which inevitably had a momentous influence on the outcome. The list of participating musicians is very impressive and includes such renowned Jazz and World Music artists as saxophonist Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist (his solos are a sweet reminder of his fabulous work alongside StingFind albums by this artist), percussionist Mino CineluFind albums by this artist, bassist Christian McBrideFind albums by this artist, bassist Richard BonaFind albums by this artist, singer and oud player Dhafer YoussefFind albums by this artist, singer and guitarist Oscar Castro NevesFind albums by this artist and percussionist Manu KatchéFind albums by this artist. Top Polish players like Robert MajewskiFind albums by this artist (flugelhorn) and Leszek MozdzerFind albums by this artist (piano) also participate, alongside AMJ’s regulars: Pawel Bzim ZareckiFind albums by this artist (keyboards), Marcin Kydrynski (guitar) and Marek NapiórkowskiFind albums by this artist (guitar). The music (as already mentioned) is an extension of AMJ’s existing repertoire, with the usual deeply lyrical / melancholic ballads and highly expressive vocal improvisations beautifully spiced with World Music elements. Vocal duets with the African / Middle-Eastern motifs sung by Youssef are among the best of the kind ever attempted.
Although profoundly melodic, AMJ’s music is full of surprises, with ever changing rhythm patterns, unusual harmonies and intelligent instrumentation. Songs are often multi-layered and complex technically, but the overall effect is easy on the ear and goes straight into the listener’s heart. This fantastic talent to weave this musical tapestry is something I admire in AMJ above all her many virtues. Of course her outstanding delivery is right on the money time after time. Regardless of the mood, tempo or harmony, her deep voice modulating between whisper and shout remains clear, expressive, sexy and enchanting. The entire album is very skillfully put together, with exceptional sound quality and superb recording. Definitely a masterpiece of contemporary Jazz-World Fusion and an essential piece of evidence pointing to the fact that music (and Art in general) know no bounds, no borders and no limits. 100 % Brilliant!
Side Note: This is a Polish edition of the album. Apparently an international edition (with different contents) is due to be released later this year. Well, I can’t wait to put my hands on that. BTW the album went Platinum in Poland just 3 weeks after its release – apparently I’m not the only person who loves this stuff.

  | PINK FREUD ~ ALCHEMIA UNIVERSAL 602517578845 (Barcode: 602517578845) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007
This is the 6th album by Polish ensemble Pink FreudFind albums by this artist, which managed to gain considerable popularity on the local scene, both with Jazz and non-Jazz listeners and critics alike. As opposed to the intellectual image that Jazz is usually associated with, this music is intelligent fun music, with some Jazz associations, and should be treated as such, no more and no less. This album, which was recorded live at the legendary Jazz club "Alchemia" in Krakow, finds Pink Freud in an expanded quintet lineup, with trumpeter Tomasz ZietekFind albums by this artist and drummer Kuba StaruszkiewiczFind albums by this artist supported by saxophonist Tomasz DudaFind albums by this artist (who recorded with the group earlier) and brilliant young keyboardist Marcin MaseckiFind albums by this artist. Five of the six expanded tracks (all over 10 minutes long) on this album are originals by the band members and the remaining one is their interpretation of a Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist tune. In many respects this album is a "back to the roots" experience for the band, which returns to extensive Jazz improvisation, which although always present at the root of their music, was often subdued on their previous albums. The special atmosphere and ambience of the club and above all the presence of Masecki transform the band into a full-fledged Jazz combo and a great one at that. The trumpet / saxophone front line enables the players to stretch out, supported comfortably by a full rhythm section, with Masecki supplying some breathtaking solo spots as well. The emotional and more importantly musical level of the band heard here surpasses everything they managed to achieve earlier, and is truly exquisite. True to their basic approach, the band emphasizes personal expression and spontaneity rather that elaborate skills or scholarly musical background. For listeners, who can appreciate such approach to music, this is quite an experience. But this music is important enough to be heard by any music connoisseur and definitely should be re-visited for in-depth listening experience. Great stuff!

  | WOJTEK MAZOLEWSKI ~ GRZYBOBRANIE UNIVERSAL 602517939738 (Barcode: 602517939738) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2007 Released: 2008
This is the debut solo album by Polish bassist / composer Wojtek MazolewskiFind albums by this artist, well-known as the founder / leader of the legendary Polish Jazz ensemble Pink FreudFind albums by this artist, which managed to achieve considerable success on the local and international scene. He is supported on this album by a group of musicians, who were at the time members of Pink Freud or were associated with the group in one way or another. They are: trumpeters Kamil SzuszkiewiczFind albums by this artist and Tomasz ZietekFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Irek WojtczakFind albums by this artist and Tomasz DudaFind albums by this artist, pianist Marcin MaseckiFind albums by this artist and his wife Candelaria Saenz ValienteFind albums by this artist, who provided the vocal parts, drummer Kuba StaruszkiewiczFind albums by this artist and percussionist Lukasz MoskalFind albums by this artist. The album includes nine tracks, which although not specifically accredited to Mazolewski on the album´s cover, are his compositions.
Recorded shortly after the excellent "AlchemiaFind albums with this title" album, which Mazolewski recorded with Pink Freud, this solo album is in many respects a continuation of the musical direction initiated there, i.e. a return to highly improvised Jazz. The music is not completely free and is based on pre-composed motifs, but with a lot of freedom awarded to the individual musicians, leading to lengthy expanded improvisations. Being very atmospheric, it develops slowly from delicate hints and low volume statements, gradually arriving at magnificent crescendos, with all the musicians playing together. There are many World-Music influences, some more obvious than others, like the distinctive Flamenco feel on the pieces featuring the Spanish vocals, which Candelaria delivers with a chilling sensitivity.
Although all the performances on this album are truly outstanding, I personally think that the work done by Masecki is the dominant factor, which turns this music from excellent to absolutely brilliant. The piano parts just keep everything together, filling the blanks and hinting towards the possible directions to be taken by the entire ensemble. Although not really up-front most of the time, his contribution is simply invaluable.
This is a complex album, which requires several (if not many) listening session in order to truly digest it and to appropriately comprehend its depth as well as appreciate its beauty. Regardless of one´s favorite Jazz sub-genre, there is definitely something for everybody here, without compromising the quality or musical truthfulness herein.
This is something no serious Polish Jazz lover should ignore, so if you don´t have it yet, get it as soon as possible. This stuff is timeless and although only a few years old, already feels like a classic.

This phenomenal Box Set, or rather book set, combines three albums by Polish vocalist / songwriter Anna Maria JopekFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. AMJFind albums by this artist), recorded over a period of several years in the mid 2000s. It includes the album "IDFind albums with this title", a CD full of demos and outtakes which did not make it to be included on "ID" and the live album "JO & COFind albums by this artist". Together these three CDs summarize the "ID" period, which was a groundbreaking step in AMJ´s development as an artist. Packaged with a marvelous book full of black & white photographs of AMJ and the participating musicians, elegantly designed and exquisitely printed, this is a piece of Art in every sense of the word.
Surrounded by a group of wonderful musicians form Poland and the world over she performs mostly self-written songs, mixing Jazz and World Music with the typical Polish melodic / lyrical atmosphere, which dominates the proceedings. The list of world famous musicians participating on "ID" is most impressive and includes saxophonist Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist, bassists Christian McBrideFind albums by this artist and Richard BonaFind albums by this artist, drummer Manu KatchéFind albums by this artist, percussionist Mino CineluFind albums by this artist, oud player / vocalist Dhafer YoussefFind albums by this artist, guitarist / vocalist Oscar Castro NevesFind albums by this artist and pianist Tord GustavsenFind albums by this artist. The live album includes also organist Jan SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Henryk MiskiewiczFind albums by this artist, bassist Robert KubiszynFind albums by this artist and drummer Pawel DobrowolskiFind albums by this artist.
The music presents a complex panorama of sounds and ideas, which include many cross-genre excursions, vocal experiments, poetic vistas and intimate dialogs between the Artist and the world that surrounds her. AMJ has one of the sweetest voices on this planet and her big artistry is all about not to make sugary music, which would be quite natural for many other singers. She also has an incredible sense of rhythm in general and Jazzy swing in particular, which is quite rare. Her affinity to music originating beyond her native Polish / European sphere of influence is also quite remarkable. All these, combined with her unique expressionism as a singer and delicate, elegant, intricate vocal delivery make her one of my favorite singers of all times.
AMJ enjoys a superstar status in Poland, which usually is a sign of tasteless commercialism and total lack of any artistic values. Her ability to be extremely popular and at the same time produce first class music is therefore especially impressive. Although some snobbish Jazz circles in her country deem her commercial and populist, this is simply completely unjustified and probably a sign of narrow-mindedness if not worse. I find it hard to believe that anybody listening to this music would feel anything but total admiration, as it is simply perfect.

He is joined by another upcoming (at the time) German Jazz musician, saxophonist Klaus DoldingerFind albums by this artist, who like Kuhn would be playing one of the leading roles on the German Jazz scene in the years to come. The two soloists are accompanied by German organist Ingfried HoffmannFind albums by this artist and a Dutch rhythm section comprising of bassist Hermann SchoonderwaltFind albums by this artist and drummer Cees SeeFind albums by this artist. Together the quintet performs twelve tunes, one of which is an original composition by Kuhn and the rest are compositions by German Jazz composers (no American standards are used).
The music is almost completely within the Swing idiom, which Kuhn perfected during the years he played in the US, but the sound is somewhat different from the American model: the improvisations are less constrained to the basic melody lines and the combined sound of the clarinet, saxophone and organ is more modern than the sound of typical American Swing combos at the time. There are traces of Bebop on one hand and Rhythm And Blues on the other, and the overall feel of the quintet is fresh and wonderfully sparkling.
Although recorded well over half a Century ago, this music lost absolutely nothing of its charm and intrinsic beauty. The performances are perfect in every way and the wonderful melodies are evergreens, which withstand the passing of time effortlessly. This album is an extraordinary document of the time of its making, beautifully preserved and even enhanced by today´s remastering techniques.
Overall this album is a superb piece of music, which documents the early days of German / European Jazz and enables the listeners to discover the early work of Rolf Kuhn and Klaus Doldinger, two of the brightest European Jazz stars, who made an enormous contribution to the genre over the years. This album is a must for all Kuhn fans and listeners interested in the history of European Jazz, not to mention of course Swing lovers, many if which are still among us, even if they don´t admit it.

  | PINK FREUD ~ MONSTER OF JAZZ UNIVERSAL 602527377025 (Barcode: 602527377025) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2009 Released: 2010
This is the 7th album by Polish ensemble Pink FreudFind albums by this artist, which managed to gain considerable popularity on the local scene, both with Jazz and non-Jazz listeners and critics alike. This album was recorded by an expanded sextet version of the group, which includes, apart from the leader, trumpeters Adam Milwiw-BaronFind albums by this artist (son of the great Polish saxophonist Piotr BaronFind albums by this artist) and Tomasz ZietekFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Tomasz DudaFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Jerzy RogiewiczFind albums by this artist and drummer Kuba StaruszkiewiczFind albums by this artist. Of all the Pink Freud albums, this is the most "radical" one, with the electronics, dub and jungle elements taking the lead, pushing the Jazz improvisations aside considerably. As a result this album will be probably the least "appealing" to listeners with a strong Jazz background. Of the twelve tracks present on the album, eleven are original compositions by the group members and the remaining one was adopted from a composition by the British electronic duo AutechreFind albums by this artist, a choice which hints as to the general direction of this album. Although there is plenty of inspired blowing by the horns, the overall mood is somewhat hectic and lacks a clear musical direction. There is an apparent absence of well formed melody lines, which characterized the groups´ earlier outings. As much as the group´s intention to continue their restless journey in search of new expressions is commendable and admirable, it often is a treacherous path which could lead to disaster if moderation is not applied. One must hope that they will re-invent themselves anew with their future efforts, leaving this one behind as a document of their quest. Of course there is plenty of music here to be enjoyed and the album is worth listening to, even if one somehow expects something more from such a great group.

  | ANNA MARIA JOPEK ~ LUSTRA UNIVERSAL 602527835242 (Barcode: 602527835242) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2010 - 2011 Released: 2011
Polish vocalist extraordinaire Anna Maria JopekFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. AMJFind albums by this artist) never stops to amaze her faithful fans and devoted listeners, but this, her latest Box Set (or rather book set), which consists of not one, not two but three full-fledged musical projects released simultaneously, is simply awe-inspiring. The three projects, entitled "PolannaFind albums with this title", "HaikuFind albums with this title" and "SobremesaFind albums with this title", were also released separately, but this set includes all three of them packaged with a marvelous book full of photographs and background information, elegantly designed and exquisitely printed, in a format similar to her previous 3 CD set "Dwa Serduszka Cztery OczyFind albums with this title", released three years earlier.
The three projects, although diametrically different from each other, form a coherent "whole", which reflects AMJ´s complex artistic vision of this world, which bridges different cultures, traditions and backgrounds, finding the common beauty in all of them, and engulfing her inner spirit. Obviously she feels completely "at home" with her music, regardless if it is rooted in the Polish melancholy, Japanese introversion and minimalism or Portuguese / African pulsations. Spanning the entire world this music is simply a living proof that geography, language and nationality have absolutely no meaning when artistic expression is concerned.
As usual AMJ is surrounded by excellent musicians, some from Poland, other from around the world. The list is very long and can be studied by reading the book, but the most significant names include Japanese pianist / composer Makoto OzoneFind albums by this artist, Cuban pianist / composer Gonzalo RubalcabaFind albums by this artist, American keyboardist / producer Gil GoldsteinFind albums by this artist and many more. Polish musicians include, among others, bassist Robert KubiszynFind albums by this artist and drummer Pawel DobrowolskiFind albums by this artist. The music on all the albums is superbly recorded and mastered, being not only perfect musically but also sublime sonically even to the most uncompromising sound quality connoisseurs. This is a "total" listening experience, which is so incredibly rare these days.
I must say that every time I confess my love of AMJ´s work my Jazz friends give me a "funny" look, which I find often infuriating. This is not Free Jazz, it´s not freely improvised music, and in fact it is only marginally Jazz at all, or rather a Jazz-World Fusion. So what? I find it fulfilling, challenging, aesthetic and meaningful nevertheless. The fact that this music can be enjoyed by a wide circle of listeners without losing an iota of quality and dedication testifies of its inherent value, which I´m always ready to defend.
So overall this is a serious piece of excellent music, diverse and surprising, deeply heartbreaking at times and unboundedly cheerful at others, but always honest and straight to the point, again a rare quality these days. Keep doing what you are doing girl, never look back!

  | KRZYSZTOF HERDZIN ~ LOOKING FOR BALANCE UNIVERSAL 602527877860 (Barcode: 602527877860) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2010 Released: 2011
Polish pianist / composer / arranger Krzysztof HerdzinFind albums by this artist is without a doubt not only the most versatile musician in his country, but also extremely prolific and obviously accordingly talented. He likes to work with as many different musical settings as possible, from a piano trio to large scale orchestral extravaganzas, seemingly with equal ease and success. This is one of such "out there" projects, which features Herdzin´s original music played by a Jazz ensemble and accompanied by a full scale string and woodwinds orchestra.
The ensemble comprises of Herdzin´s regular trio, with bassist Robert KubiszynFind albums by this artist and drummer Cezary KonradFind albums by this artist, and three guests: guitarist Marek NapiorkowskiFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Piotr BaronFind albums by this artist and Swiss harmonica player Gregoire MaretFind albums by this artist (of Pat MethenyFind albums by this artist Group fame), who is the featured soloist. The Sinfonia VivaFind albums by this artist Orchestra is responsible for the orchestral parts.
The music belongs broadly to the Jazz & Strings format, which of course was tried many times before. The Jazz ensemble plays a set of very melodic, relaxed and lyrical compositions, taking solos in turn, with Maret being the principle soloist. The harmonica is relatively rarely used as a solo instrument in the Jazz framework and with the exception of a few known cases (most notably the Belgian Toots ThielemansFind albums by this artist) is usually associated with less challenging music. Of course in the hands (and mouth) of a very talented player it can sound quite virtuosic, as is the case here, but it adds another dimension of "sweetness" to the proceedings, which borders with overdoing it. Personally Baron´s contributions on this album are the most interesting, albeit being decisively too limited.
The orchestral arrangements are elegant and kept in good taste, playing only the second fiddle (pun intended) in the proceedings. Although excellently played and masterfully arranged, they seem to be merely ornamentation, contributing little to the actual musical content other than setting an atmospheric background. There is definitely a fine balance and cooperation between the ensemble and the orchestra, but full musical integration is not achieved here, perhaps purposely. Herdzin of course proves that he can easily handle the orchestral arrangements any way he pleases.
Overall this is a very nice album, which many listeners will find pleasing and enjoyable. For hardcore Jazz fans this might be a bit too sweet to swallow (especially those with diabetes like myself), but nevertheless it is professionally executed classy music, accessible to a wide audience, which definitely has its merits.

  | FRANK SINATRA ~ THE CONCERT SINATRA (EXPANDED EDITION) UNIVERSAL 602527968070 (Barcode: 602527968070) ~ USA ~ Classic Pop Recorded: 1963 Released: 2012
This wonderful album by Frank SinatraFind albums by this artist, released unfortunately under a somewhat misleading title, is a studio recording (not as the title might suggest), made with a huge orchestra (arranged and conducted by the fabulous Nelson RiddleFind albums by this artist) and including material, which Sinatra did not perform usually on stage. What the "concert" part of the title did suggest was that this material is more "serious" and deserved to be performed in a concert hall. The huge orchestra and the exceptional care about the recording quality were all part of the same "serious" status applied to this recording. Whatever the original intentions were at the time, this album allows the listener a rare opportunity to hear Sinatra singing more challenging (both musically and lyrically) material, with he does wholeheartedly and admirably. Riddle´s marvelous orchestration turns each and every one of tracks into an instant classic and in retrospect this album retains all its original beauty and aesthetic finesse.

Every time I hear Frank SinatraFind albums by this artist sing, my heart melts and yet at the same time I get mad remembering what so many sanctimonious Jazz critics had to say about him and his contribution to Jazz. Let me tell you smug ignoramuses: Sinatra had more feel for Jazz in his pinky than most other Jazz vocalists you rave about. Anybody with a pair of ears used as musical devices rather than decoration will tell you that these recordings by Sinatra, accompanied by the divine Count Basie OrchestraFind albums by this artist, are pure, unadulterated Jazz classics, which stand the test of time better than most others recordings of the era. This album brings together the two studio albums Sinatra made with Basie: "An Historic Musical FirstFind albums with this title" (arranged and conducted by Neal HeftiFind albums by this artist) and "It Might As Well Be SwingFind albums with this title" (arranged and conducted by Quincy JonesFind albums by this artist), recorded a couple of years apart in the early 1960s, when both Sinatra and Basie were at their absolute artistic peak. The repertoire includes many Sinatra classic standards, which he performed repeatedly over the years live, with these particular versions being definitely remarkable. An absolute classic!

  | PINK FREUD ~ HORSE & POWER UNIVERSAL 602537026203 (Barcode: 602537026203) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2011 Released: 2012
This is the 8th album by Polish ensemble Pink FreudFind albums by this artist, one of the country´s top acts both in the Jazz and non-Jazz spheres. Formed in 1998 by bassist / composer Wojtek MazolewskiFind albums by this artist, the group changed its lineup several times over the years but succeeded to maintain its popularity and gradually achieved a cult following and a large fan base home and abroad. This album was recorded in a new quartet lineup, which features, alongside the leader, trumpeter Adam Milwiw-BaronFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Tomasz DudaFind albums by this artist and for the first time new drummer Rafal KlimczukFind albums by this artist. All the ten tracks on this album are original compositions by the group members with Mazolewski being credited or co-credited for all but one composition. In full contrast to their last album ("Monster Of JazzFind albums with this title"), recorded almost three years earlier, this album is a complete stylistic "about face", marking the group´s return to almost acoustic Jazz, with the electronic, dub and other non-Jazz elements completely gone. Of course this is still Pink Freud, with their unique brand of post-Yass, characterized by non-Jazz rhythm patterns, nonchalant treatment of chord changes and other signs of the "coolness" poise, but also full of passion and surprising ventures into Free Jazz soloing and funky bass parts, all of these happening out of the blue, which of course is absolutely marvelous, if one likes such atypical musical approach. And those great melodies, which were almost completely lost on the preceding album, are back, haunting the listener, turning him into a humming zombie. People familiar with Mazolewski´s activities should not be taken by complete surprise by this album, since his excellent solo album "Smells Like Tape SpiritFind albums with this title", released in between the two last Pink Freud albums, already hinted as to the return of the prodigal son to Jazz. So here we have a group that changes like the proverbial chameleon, adopting to contemporary developments and returning to the tradition, and yet managing to keep their musical originality and integrity intact, which is definitely a great accomplishment. Above all, this music, apart for its quality, intelligent compositions and excellent execution, manages to be such fun. Imagine hearing this stuff live and one can understand why the group mesmerizes audiences all over the world taking no prisoners. So regardless if this music is driven by horse power, steam power or nuclear power, it is worthy of music connoisseurs attention and should not be missed, for fun´s sake. Brilliant stuff!

  | KRZYSZTOF HERDZIN ~ JESTES SWIATLEM UNIVERSAL 602537293872 (Barcode: 602537293872) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz & Poetry Recorded: 2012 Released: 2013
The Jazz & Poetry sub-genre is one of the pillars of Polish Jazz in particular, but also Polish Music in general, as it appears on the scene in many variations and crosses genre boundaries between Pop, Rock and Jazz since many decades. The abundance of great poets and poetesses as much as composers and performers, the intrinsic Polish lyricism and melancholy and the intellectual elitism of Polish Art evidently produce a fruitful ground for such meetings between words and music, which happen in the Polish Culture more often then anywhere else in the world.
This album by celebrated Polish Jazz pianist / composer / arranger Krzysztof HerdzinFind albums by this artist is his contribution to the Jazz & Poetry legacy. It presents eight original compositions and one arrangement of a song by the Polish 19th Century Romantic composer Karol KurpinskiFind albums by this artist to the words of a late 18th / early 19th Century poet Franciszek KarpinskiFind albums by this artist, the father of Polish Sentimentalism. Of the eight compositions by Herdzin, one (the title track closing the album) is an instrumental and the others have lyrics by contemporary Polish poets: Konstanty Ildefons GalczynskiFind albums by this artist (one of my favorite Polish poets) and Kazimierz Przerwa-TetmajerFind albums by this artist.
Herdzin assembled a dreamy team to record this music, which features him on keyboards and a plethora of other instruments, bassist Robert KubiszynFind albums by this artist and drummer Cezary KonradFind albums by this artist. Guitarist Marek NapiorkowskiFind albums by this artist guests on five tracks. The vocal tracks are sung by the legendary Anna Maria JopekFind albums by this artist, Dorota MiskiewiczFind albums by this artist and Grzegorz TurnauFind albums by this artist. Herdzin himself sings on one track and adds background vocals on two more.
In spite of the truly excellent instrumental accompaniment and no less excellent vocals, the focus of this album is the original music, which spotlights Herdzin´s talent as a composer. Diverse and often even contrasting in the many tempi and cross-genre excursions, from deep lyricism to exotic World Music themes, this music remains constantly beautifully melodic and round. It fits the various poems used as the lyrics perfectly, which is always a great challenge for any composer. Even though Herdzin is still a relatively young musician, his enormous experience and his many talents come to full fruition herein.
The instrumental work is pretty exciting as well, with Herdzin changing instruments more often that he changes his socks, playing all of them quite well, Kubiszyn playing some very nasty fretless bass parts that make the hair on your neck curl, Konrad keeps the entire ensemble rolling like only he can, and Napiorkowski adds some superbly tasty ornamentation. All three (or four in fact) vocalists are without reproach, with Jopek being (for me) divine as always, but the others not falling behind by any means. Turnau, who specializes in the Jazz & Poetry niche, sings most of the vocals, always with sensitivity and exquisite diction.
So here we have it, another great album by Maestro Herdzin, whose inexhaustible energies know no limits. Jazz & Poetry buffs will of course love this to bits, but for any cultural music connoisseur this is a piece of music worthy admiration and a source of many pleasurable moments.

  | STANISLAW SOJKA ~ W HOLDZIE MISTRZOWI - LIVE UNIVERSAL 602537329854 (Barcode: 602537329854) ~ POLAND ~ Blues-Rock Recorded: 2013 Released: 2012
This is a live recording of a concert by veteran Polish Blues / Jazz / Rock vocalist Stanislaw SojkaFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Soyka) and his band, performing songs by Poland´s greatest ever singer / composer Czeslaw NiemenFind albums by this artist. Niemen composed all the nine songs performed here, three of which also have his lyrics and others are by other lyricists or poems written by Polish poets. Sojka also plays piano and the band comprises of seven players, including a brass section, and a guest guitarist Tomasz JaskiewiczFind albums by this artist, original member of the band AkwareleFind albums by this artist, Niemen´s first group, which recorded many of these songs originally.
Considering Niemen´s legendary status on the Polish scene, any attempt to tackle his material is a priori a potentially perilous affair. No other Polish vocalist managed, in the decades that followed, to come even close to Niemen´s power of expression and vocal virtuosity. Therefore this album, although a tribute, faces enormous challenges, which unfortunately prove insurmountable even to such an experienced and talented artist as Sojka. Niemen´s songs needed to be rearranged quite radically in order to fit within Sojka´s vocal range. In addition the instrumental accompanied was updated, which distances the songs from their original Rock setting and places them into a comfortable middle-of–the-road relaxed Pop setting with slight Jazzy overtones. Overall the album sounds incredibly nice, which of course is its key problem; Niemen´s music might mean many different things to different people, but "nice" was never among them.
The music is played perfectly and beautifully recorded, with a warm, clear sound quality, especially so for a live recording. The audio CD is accompanied by a DVD capturing the same concert, so the listener has a choice of just listen to or also watch the proceedings.
Personally, I find little affinity for this project, which simplifies and even to some extent trivializes the original songs in my opinion, but I´m sure many others will find this a most pleasurable listening experience. Luckily I still have the original Niemen recordings to keep the memory alive and the fire burning.

  | SLAWOMIR JASKULKE ~ MOMENTS UNIVERSAL 602537345595 (Barcode: 602537345595) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2012 Released: 2013
This is the fifth solo album by Polish Jazz pianist / composer Slawomir JaskulkeFind albums by this artist and his second solo piano recording. Jaskulke has been a dominant figure on the young Polish Jazz scene since the turn of the Century, participated in numerous projects and recorded over thirty albums, mostly as a sideman. This album presents eight original compositions by Jaskulke the composer, which all receive an extended treatment by Jaskulke the pianist.
The immediate impression of the music on this album is quite surprising, especially to people who are familiar with Jaskulke´s earlier recordings. It seems he went through a deep transformation over time, during which the Classical music influence won over his initial focus on Jazz, taking him towards new pastures. One might even quite seriously wonder if this music is Jazz at all; a serious question not about how to label this music, which of course is irrelevant, but how to react to it aesthetically. A sort of question one might also ask about the solo piano works of Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist, where there is no clear answer to that dilemma. The music is melodic, lyrical and melancholic, with few, if any, rhythmic changes. After stating the melodic theme of each composition, Jaskulke enters a hypnotic, dreamlike phase of variations (rather than improvisations), returning intermittently to the melodic theme. Any listener, without prior knowledge of the artist involved, would most probably come to the conclusion that this is contemporary Classical piano music.
Gone is Jaskulke´s percussive attack on the keyboard, his long arpeggios and his youthful carefree chutzpah, all to be replaced by poise, introvert soul-searching and almost lethargic delivery. Obviously his excellent technique as a player is still very much there, but it is less dazzling and flamboyant. Are we talking about "growing up" I wonder, a wiz-kid becoming a celebrity? I have no answers only a lot of questions, but it seems a bit early in his career to "take it easy".
At least the music is all beautifully recorded, with an incredible sound quality, ambience, balance, separation, etc. A Steinway and a superb recording engineer are always worth their cost in gold. This is (sound wise) as good as any ECM recording!
I´m pretty sure this album will win many ecstatic reviews and make numerous listeners very happy. Good for them! It probably even deserves it; and it must be simply me looking for the imperfections of the universe. Talking of which I wonder is the fact that several albums I didn´t fall head over heels in love with lately were all released by UniversalFind albums on this label Music Polska? A coincidence, one wonders?

This is the third album by Polish Jazz vocalist Anna GadtFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Ania StepniewskaFind albums by this artist) and her first collaboration with the fabulous RGGFind albums by this artist trio: pianist Lukasz OjdanaFind albums by this artist, bassist Maciej GarbowskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Krzysztof GradziukFind albums by this artist. The album consists of eleven original songs, ten of which were composed by Gadt and nine of which feature her lyrics, all in English. The tenth song uses a quote by American poet Ralph Waldo EmersonFind albums by this artist, combined with another quote by American opera singer Beverly SillsFind albums by this artist, with the entire quote credited only to Emerson? The remaining song was composed by Garbowski and features lyrics by Polish poet Miron BialoszewskiFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded at Poland´s finest recording facility, Studio Tokarnia, engineered as usual by the man with a pair of best ears in Poland, the studio owner Jan SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist.
At the first glance this album had the potential to achieve the status of one of the best Polish Jazz recording in 2013: the finest Polish Jazz piano trio active on the scene, fascinating music, highly sensitive vocal delivery, superb sound quality, in short a dream come true. Sadly this potential proved to be unfulfilled as a result of committing one single mistake, the same unforgivable mistake which hunts the Polish Jazz vocal scene consistently since decades, namely the unexplainable desire to sing in English. Why on earth would anybody, who is not a natural English speaker, want to sing in that langue is a total mystery to me? It is plainly obvious that the articulation, the pronunciation and the accent will be always against you, so why even try? Time after time all Polish Jazz vocalist fall into the same trap and nobody´s learning; what a pity. This album is no different; the vocals sung in English sound odd, unnatural and even bizarre at times. As if to prove the case, the only song with the Polish lyrics is simply heavenly and untouchable, as are the moments when Gadt is utilizing wordless vocalese. On the bright side, the music composed by Gadt is simply excellent from start to finish. Intelligent, atmospheric, versatile, moving, in short she made no mistakes whatsoever in that department and deserves all the praise.
Of course there are plenty of wonderful moments left to be enjoyed. The trio plays delightfully from start to finish and stands up to the challenge of accompanying a singer, which is quite different and in many respects more difficult that playing by themselves. Together with their astounding album "SzymanowskiFind albums with this title" released earlier this year, these two recordings firmly reassure their prime and unchallenged standing, which withstood the ground shaking personnel change they went through. They are simply beyond words. The way the trio improvises "around" the songs Gadt composed is simply a genius at work. In spite of the problem created by singing in English, Gadt is obviously a great vocalist, with exquisite sensibility, musicality and musical intelligence. All these qualities come through against all odds in these circumstances. One can only imagine what a brilliant, superb album this would be if she had decided to use Polish lyrics.
All things considered this is an amazing album after all, even magnificent at times. A magnificent failure? Well not quite, simply just another step on the long way which has no beaten tracks and leads to a place worth going. You win some, you lose some, c´est la vie…

This is the expanded reissue / remix of the seminal live album by iconic British Rock group Deep PurpleFind albums by this artist, recorded in Osaka and Tokyo during three consecutive nights on August 15, 16 and 17, 1972. The album was recorded by the original Mk II lineup of the group with vocalist Ian GillanFind albums by this artist, guitarist Ritchie BlackmoreFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Jon LordFind albums by this artist, bassist Roger GloverFind albums by this artist and drummer Ian PaiceFind albums by this artist.
The Box Set presents the full concerts played during the three nights on CD1 to CD3 and the encores of all three nights on CD4. There is also a DVD with a documentary about these concerts and other material, as well as a replica of a 7” Vinyl single released in Japan during the tour and a plethora of printed materials.
The set list of the three concert is identical, as are the encores (with one exception). This provides the fans with an opportunity to compare these concerts looking for subtle (and sometimes less subtle) differences between them. Of course, every live concert is different from another, but the creativity of these musicians is truly amazing and in fact they are able to create many variations of the same tunes in a most astonishing way.
This album has been hailed for generations as “the best live Rock album of all time”, and it certainly deserves an honorable place on a pedestal of most memorable live recordings for its sheer power, ingenuity and brilliant music, uniquely combined into one. The new remixes might surprise listeners, who have listened to the earlier versions of this album (and who hasn’t?), as it offers a much more detailed separation between the instruments and clear sound. Of course even if you already have an earlier version, this Box Set is worth having, except for the fact that it now has an astronomical price rag.
Overall, this is a monumental historic Rock document, which is an essential part of every decent Classic Rock record collection, not necessarily in this expanded version. If your wife is bothering you about wasting money on buying records, tell her that this album is now worth over ten times as much as you paid for it ten years ago ;) Best investment ever!

British Rock legends Deep PurpleFind albums by this artist, in their second incarnation called Mk II, were one of the definitive bands of all times and this live recording captures the band at their absolute peak form, resulting in an iconic album which is an integral part of the pantheon of live Rock albums. The band was an incredible amalgamation of talent and included the fierce rhythm section: bassist Roger GloverFind albums by this artist and drummer Ian PaiceFind albums by this artist, two absolutely stupendous instrumentalists: organist Jon LordFind albums by this artist and guitarist Ritchie BlackmoreFind albums by this artist and a charismatic, energetic and unstoppable vocalist Ian GillanFind albums by this artist. Between them they also shared a rare ability to write incredible catchy riffs that stuck with the listener forever and some of the most beautiful Rock melodies ever composed. As a result at that time they had only very few competitors to the "Kings of Rock" title.
Originally this album was released as a double LP, a tradition that started in the late 1960s and continued for the decade to come, with most top Rock acts releasing at least one double live album during their career. The album included seven original Deep Purple tunes, originating from the three studio albums that preceded this recording: "In RockFind albums with this title", "FireballFind albums with this title", and "Machine HeadFind albums with this title". The average playing time of each of these tunes is over ten minutes, which means these were expanded versions, full of long solo spots, improvised passages and a general mayhem and race with the devil. The level of musicianship, energy, inventiveness and sheer stunning brilliance is simply astounding.
This Deluxe edition of the album adds a second CD of previously unreleased material recorded at the same concerts that produced the original album, and includes mostly encores the band played at the time. It includes songs which were not included on the original album, one of which is the band´s cover of a classic Rock song (they rarely played covers so this is a treat). Of course one can only speculate when the complete recordings done on the three nights in Japan will be released in their entirety.
In retrospect this is a piece of the Holy Grail, which appeared on earth for a brief decade and then was lost again. Nobody makes music like this any more and probably nobody will ever do. Thank God for sound recording and record labels for sharing this Ambrosia with us (for a fee, mind you). I pity the generations that came after ours for being ignorant of this music´s existence.

  | ANNA MARIA JOPEK / GONZALO RUBALCABA ~ MINIONE UNIVERSAL 602557398083 (Barcode: 602557398083) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017
Polish Diva Anna Maria JopekFind albums by this artist reached a stage in her career, which places her outside the helter-skelter of the local music scene, basically free to do whatever she loves to do. This magnificent album is a result of her desire to re-examine the Polish popular music of the pre-WWII period, the music of her Grandmother and the music of Warsaw, the Warsaw Tango, which thrived in the city´s nightclubs but was also on the lips of Warsaw people during their daily mundane lives. The passionate songs about love, desire, betrayal and despair and love again, which squeezed tears from women´s blue, black, green or brown eyes since the beginning of humanity.
These songs were written by such highly talented composers like Wladyslaw DanFind albums by this artist (Danilowski), Zygmunt BialostockiFind albums by this artist, Jerzy PetersburskiFind albums by this artist, Artur GoldFind albums by this artist and others and featured lyrics by poets like Andrzej WlastFind albums by this artist, Julian TuwimFind albums by this artist, Zenon FriedwaldFind albums by this artist and others; and yes they were mostly Polish Jews, which means that many of them did not survive the Holocaust: Bialostocki, Gold and Wlast perished in the Warsaw Ghetto or in concentration camps. Therefore this album is not only a tribute to the Polish Tango, but also homage to its creators.
The album´s eleven tracks present eight Polish evergreens, one classic non-Polish song, which Jopek performs as a vocalese, and two short piano fragments related to two of the songs. Jopek selected an ideal partner for this recording in the brilliant Cuban pianist Gonzalo RubalcabaFind albums by this artist, whose virtuosity but more importantly incredible sensitivity and understanding of the tango rhythmic intricacies turn this album into a true masterpiece. The rhythm section consists of two renown Cuban musicians: bassist (electric and acoustic) Armando GolaFind albums by this artist and drummer Ernesto SimpsonFind albums by this artist. Together, in the minimal vocals / piano trio format, they create their magic, delicate, somewhat subdued and melancholic, but always directly penetrating the soul.
This album stands out on its own in many respects, beyond comparison and competition, a mature piece of Art, which immediately enters the Polish Jazz vocal Hall of Fame, even if Jazz is not really its focal point. Jopek´s interpretations of these songs could be considered theatrical rather than straightforward Jazzy, but combined with the exquisite accompaniment the album stays within the Jazz idiom for the entire duration.
And most importantly, as usual in such cases, is the fact that this is not just one more vocal Jazz album; it is way more in every sense: aesthetic, conceptual, historical and cultural. It is a symbol of good taste, respect of one´s tradition and roots, continuity and Artistic consistency, being a true beacon of Polish Culture in the best meaning of the term. My deepest heartfelt thanks to you my Dear Anna Maria!

  | MATEUSZ SMOCZYNSKI ~ BEREK UNIVERSAL 602557610710 (Barcode: 602557610710) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017
This is the third album as a leader by Polish violinist / composer Mateusz SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist, recorded again in a quintet setting with guitarist Konrad ZemlerFind albums by this artist, his older brother pianist Jan SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Wojciech PulcynFind albums by this artist and drummer Michal MiskiewiczFind albums by this artist. The album presents twelve original compositions, one of which is repeated twice, seven of which were composed by Jan Smoczynski, two were composed by Mateusz Smoczynski, two were co-composed by the Smoczynski brothers and one is credited to all five members of the quintet. The album was recorded in the legendary Studio Tokarnia and engineered by Jan Smoczynski, with spectacular sound fidelity.
In the last decade Mateusz Smoczynski, both as a solo artists and member of the already legendary Atom String QuartetFind albums by this artist, has been consistently paving his way to the Top of the Polish Jazz violin school, which has very little competition in any other part of the world. That top, extremely overcrowded by young musicians, is simply exploding with talent and incredible dexterity, to the delight of Jazz lovers, both in Poland and the world over, and is just one of the symptoms that characterize the Polish Jazz scene in general.
On this album Mateusz Smoczynski does not have to prove anything anymore, and therefore he is able to concentrate on his total delivery of the music, his personal style and the finesse of his skills. The exquisite compositions by Jan Smoczynski suit ideally his expressive style and their intrinsic elegance and lyricism, as well as superb Swing are simply ideal vehicles for the music to come forward.
Of course he is splendidly supported by the members of the quintet, all of which are Top Polish Jazz players with extensive experience and outstanding talents. The almost completely acoustic sound of the album allows for delicate and intricate interactions between the musicians, full of mutual respect. The round sound of the quintet, and the blooming sound quality, create a wonderful aural experience, which should leave no listener cold.
The music is a wide amalgam of many influences, none of which are particularly dominant, but to a sensitive ear are obviously audible, such as some Classical stylistic hooks, Polish Folklore motifs, tribute to past Polish Jazz violin legends, and many others. Of course these elements are perfectly well balanced and manage to create a new entity, which simply speaks for itself.
Overall this is a "perfect" album, one that has nothing that should be changed or added to it in any sense. It is beautifully performed and offers wonderful music, full of European aesthetics. There are no false pretences, no exhibitionism and no boring derivative fillers, just honest, straightforward great music from start to finish. So far definitely one of the best offers in 2017 that landed on my desk (or in my ears). Chapeau bas!

  | PETER FRAMPTON ~ ALL BLUES UNIVERSAL 602577644245 (Barcode: 602577644245) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock Recorded: 2019 Released: 2019
This is the 17th solo album by legendary British guitarist / vocalist / songwriter Peter FramptonFind albums by this artist, recorded with his regular band, which includes keyboardist Rob ArthurFind albums by this artist, guitarist Adam LesterFind albums by this artist, drummer Dan WojciechowskiFind albums by this artist and bassists Glenn WorfFind albums by this artist or David LabruyereFind albums by this artist. Several guest musicians appear on selected tracks. The album presents ten tracks, all Blues classics and obviously Frampton’s favorites.
Following almost six decades of music career as member of The HerdFind albums by this artist and Humble PieFind albums by this artist, and a solo artist since 1971, which produced, among others, one of the top live Rock albums of all time, the iconic “Frampton Comes AliveFind albums with this title”, Frampton returns to his youth influences, paying tribute to the Blues. The selection of songs is impeccable and his abilities as a guitarist and vocalist, despite the diagnosed illness, are still absolutely stunning. The Blues was always an essential part of his musical persona, and this album proves why.
An interesting choice of including Miles DavisFind albums by this artist’ “All Blues”, as one of the covers and the album’s title, which gests a sensational rendition herein, emphasizes the omnipresence of the Blues in all forms and shapes of music.
Overall, this is a wonderful Blues Rock album, with superb guitar work, heartfelt vocals and a tinge of nostalgia, which no Blues fan ignore. Chapeau bas to one of the heroes of my youth, who still kicks ass way more convincingly that anybody half his age, despite the fact that our days are numbered!

  | RICK WAKEMAN ~ NO EARTHLY CONNECTION UNIVERSAL JAPAN 9295 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
5th solo album from 1976. After 4 extravagant epics from Six Wives to King Arthur, this is a much more `laid back` album and perhaps one of his best works of that period. The seven-piece bands that recorded the album (called the English Rock Ensemble) is tight and supportive and the methaphysical subject matter (yes it is another concept album) is well suited by the music. This is an album by veteran Polish Jazz-World ensemble KrokeFind albums by this artist, which consists of violist / multi-instrumentalist Tomasz KukurbaFind albums by this artist, accordionist Jerzy BawolFind albums by this artist and bassist Tomasz LatoFind albums by this artist. Percussionist Slawomir BernyFind albums by this artist guest on some of the tracks. The album presents ten original compositions three of which appear as reoccurring themes, together fourteen tracks, which were created as the soundtrack for the Warsaw´s Jewish Theatre performance of the spectacle "Rejwach", based on the book of the same title, directed by my Friend, Polish / American director Andrzej KrakowskiFind albums by this artist. All the music was co-composed by the Kroke members and their producer / sound engineer Dariusz GrelaFind albums by this artist.
The music is everything one can expect from Kroke, which in time reached the status of one of the leading ensembles active on the Polish scene, and which always emphasizes its empathy / connection with Jewish / Klezmer music in a most authentic, albeit at the same time completely original fashion. This music is completely up to date both in musical terms and its production approach, blending acoustic instruments with contemporary electronic sounds, as always with elegance and grace. Although the music has a distinct Jewish feel to it, it is also a rich amalgam of other influences, like Balkan and even Middle Easter tinges.
The themes are richly melodic, somewhat sentimental and lyrical, but never trivial or simplistic, which proves the true Artistry of its creators. "Rejwach" is a deeply charged spectacle and the music is in many aspects an antidote for the spectators, serving as a balancing factor between the often tragic subject matter and the world existing beyond the scene. It is undoubtedly one of the most successful and fitting original soundtracks created in Poland in the last few years.
But listeners, who had not been able to attend the theatre performance of "Rejwach" will be perfectly satisfied with listening to this album, which stands on its own ground perfectly securely as a separate piece of Art. Brilliantly performed by Kroke, superbly recorded and wonderfully put together, this is beautiful piece of music which is a true pleasure to listen to and surely deserves repeated periodic re-visits, as it is absolutely timeless and universal.
Hats off, my Friends!

This is the debut album by Polish vocalist / keyboardist / songwriter Anna RuttarFind albums by this artist recorded with a core trio featuring guitarist Andrzej GondekFind albums by this artist, bass guitarist Wojciech GasiorFind albums by this artist and drummer Szymon MadejFind albums by this artist. Bassist Michal KapczukFind albums by this artist and kalimba player Bernard MaseliFind albums by this artist guest on one track each. The album presents ten original songs, all composed and arranged by Ruttar. She also wrote lyrics to nine of the songs and one song uses a poem by American poet E. E. CummingsFind albums by this artist. Nine of the songs use English lyrics and only one uses Polish lyrics.
The album is an excellent example of sophisticated Jazz-Pop Fusion, with the beautifully melodic songs dressed up in a Jazzy (and sometimes Bluesy) arrangements, superbly performed by the participating musicians. Combined with intelligent and meaningful lyrics, these songs are a great fun to listen to from start to end, presenting a truly exquisite collection of diverse, coherent, and rare quality music. The vocals / bass duet, which is the most Jazz oriented song on the album, is an instant classic and the solo track closing the album is perhaps a road sign for the future?
Ruttar has a nice, expressive voice and makes a good use of her vocal abilities throughout the album. My usual grunt about Polish vocalist singing in English is not really needed this time, as she does a good job with the English pronunciation and her foreign accent is rather charming. Nevertheless I would have preferred of course if the songs all had Polish lyrics, like the closing song of the album.
Instrumentally the album is pretty minimalist, and the most important, and by all means superb, contributions are by the guitarist, who plays some absolutely stunning licks here, all perfectly matched to the music. The rhythm section does an ideal job, being supportive, precise and professional, and most importantly not getting in the way.
Overall this is a superb debut effort, which sadly slipped under the radar when released, probably simply for the reason that it was too good to noted. I´d truly love to here more music from Ruttar, at the earliest convenience. Delightful stuff!

Saxophonist Henryk MiskiewiczFind albums by this artist (Dorota´s Father) guests on one song. The DVD (filmed during the concert), included in the package, adds the concert´s intro, outro and a couple of songs not included on the CD.
I am happy to say that I managed to have a more modest (with just three pianists) version of this project perform at the 2018 Singer Jazz Festival, which was extremely successful.
As expected, all the performances are absolutely wonderful, a typical example of European haute Culture, where music, words and stage performance are combined to deliver an overall experience, which is more than just a sum of its ingredients. The album moves between Jazz & Poetry and highly lyrical popular music, all expertly arranged and brilliantly executed, especially in view of the fact that it was captured live.
This album delivers exactly what it promises: an extraordinary panorama of Polish Jazz piano, full of elegance, virtuosity and flair. Miskiewicz moves with ease from one song to another, with a chameleonic change of moods and emotions, as appropriate for a great performer.
For lovers of Polish Jazz in general and Polish Jazz piano in particular, this album is a superb introduction to the subject. Even for listeners beyond the Polish language sphere, this music easily penetrates and language barriers and should be completely accessible to every music lover.

  | EWA LIPSKA / ZBIGNIEW PREISNER ~ 2016 DOKAD? UNIVERSAL MUSIC POLSKA 602557360660 (Barcode: 602557360660) ~ POLAND ~ Sung Poetry Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017
This is a live recording of a concert, which presents a series of compositions by composer Zbigniew PreisnerFind albums by this artist with texts by poetess Ewa LipskaFind albums by this artist. The music is performed by several vocalists, including Lisa GerrardFind albums by this artist, Edyta KrzemienFind albums by this artist and others, a large mixed choir and many instrumentalists, including pianist Dominik WaniaFind albums by this artist, organist Jozef SkrzekFind albums by this artist, percussionist Slawomir BernyFind albums by this artist and others. Both Lipska and Preisner also contribute spoken / sung parts. The 2CD album presents twenty-two tracks, which are also available on the enclosed DVD.
The music, which encompasses Classical, Folkloristic and Popular music elements, offers a form of a contemporary oratorio, but the subject matter is completely secular, and touches on deeply philosophical / political / social matters, which trouble the Polish society, as much today as it did through the ages. Lipska’s tongue, sharp as a razor, is completely ruthless and slaughters holly cows by the dozen, often shockingly “in the face”, which often is the only way to jiggle people out of their lethargy. Preisner’s music fits the “wild” and provocative lyrics perfectly, creating an amalgam of somber, deadly serious atmosphere with seemingly lighter interludes of cabaret-like textures.
Of course one can always ponder on the effectiveness of “protesting” in Art, and the realization that even the most talented human beings, like Allen GinsbergFind albums by this artist and the entire Beat Generation, or Bob DylanFind albums by this artist and the entire Protest Generation, or Marek GrechutaFind albums by this artist, or Julian TuwimFind albums by this artist managed to change anything in the long run, prevent wars, social injustice or human stupidity. And yet, the Artists simply must do, what they do, since they just wouldn’t be Artists if they wouldn’t do what they do, hoping that someone will hear what they mean.
Overall, this is a monumental stage enterprise, which forces the listener to face a mirror, and which uses an entire arsenal of Cultural armament: music, poetry, spoken word, etc. to make one simple, but powerful statement: “wake up! I consider myself extremely happy to be able to count several of the protagonist of this ambitious masterpiece as my friends. Thank you for the words and the sounds!

  | KROKE ~ TRAVELLER (DELUXE EDITION) UNIVERSAL MUSIC POLSKA 602557487787 (Barcode: 602557487787) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017
In 2017 the Polish Jazz-World Fusion trio KrokeFind albums by this artist celebrates its 25th Anniversary and this album is a part of these celebrations. Violinist / multi-instrumentalist Tomasz KukurbaFind albums by this artist, accordionist Jerzy BawolFind albums by this artist and bassist Tomasz LatoFind albums by this artist founded the band in 1992 in Krakow, initially as a Klezmer oriented band, but over the years expanded their horizons to encompass a wide kaleidoscope of ethnic inspirations, which embrace the entire world. The Mediterranean musical spices are at the heart of their music, which amalgamates Jewish, Greek, Turkish, Balkan, Arabic and many other influences, creating a rich tapestry of sounds and rhythms, rarely accomplished by other ensembles of this kind.
Kroke invited an old friend and wonderful drummer / percussionist Slawomir BernyFind albums by this artist to take part in the recording of this album, which presents ten (or eleven on this Deluxe Edition) original pieces of music, mostly composed by the members of Kroke, some with the participation of Dariusz GrelaFind albums by this artist, who also helped to arrange and was in charge of the recording of this album, which offers a spectacular sonic result.
The music of Kroke is a soundtrack, which takes the listener from one place on the surface of our small planet, to another, doing so with grace and elegance. The transition feels completely natural and the music more hints than actually points to a specific location, leaving a lot to the listener´s imagination. The album´s title, which symbolizes Kroke´s experiences gained during their extensive voyages and their encounters with People and their diverse Cultures, also describes no less accurately the experience that the listener is going through while listening to the music, as if travelling on a magic carpet with new vistas appearing before his eyes and ears while the journey continues.
Of course the level of performances by the musicians involved in no less than spectacular all the way through, but in the overall picture the instrumental intricacies are less important than the total effect this music creates. Only repeated listening can be dedicated to the discovery of the infinite riches this music offers, the elaborate arrangements and the virtuosic solo parts.
Overall this album is a beautiful piece of World Music, which emphasizes the beauty of Cultures all over our planet and demonstrates what happens when openness and acceptance overcomes barriers of fear and estrangement.
The secret of cooking tells us to use as many seemingly incompatible spices in one dish, as long se we keep the proportions right. Kroke cooked a wonderful musical meal for us, which leaves us simply to feast on it. Like good wine, Kroke still gets better with the passing of time, which is a true celebration and a blessing!

  | CEZARIUSZ GADZINA ~ MOSTY UNIVERSAL MUSIC POLSKA 602557812039 (Barcode: 602557812039) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2015 Released: 2017
This is an album by Polish (resident in Belgium) saxophonist / composer Cezariusz GadzinaFind albums by this artist, recorded with a host of top Polish Jazz musicians, which includes trumpeter Robert MajewskiFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Maciej SikalaFind albums by this artist, trombonist Grzegorz NagorskiFind albums by this artist, accordionist Cezary PaciorekFind albums by this artist, bassist Pawel PantaFind albums by this artist, percussionist Piotr IwickiFind albums by this artist and drummer Cezary KonradFind albums by this artist – a dream team by all respects. The album presents eight original compositions, all by Gadzina, all entitled "Bridge" in eight different languages ("Mosty" means bridges in Polish), symbolizing the connections between a plethora of genres and sub-genres present within the contemporary Jazz idiom.
Gadzina is primarily familiar for his work in the Jazz-Classical Fusion field and his previous recordings, including the excellent "The Fifth ElementFind albums with this title", testify to his affinity to this particular field. However, this recording seems to leave Classical Music out of the formula, concentrating on the Jazz side of Gadzina´s personality.
Stylistically the music sits well within the boundaries of modern mainstream Jazz language, offering excellent compositions and interesting arrangements, none of which are trivial or banal. The music is full of unexpected twists and turns, tempo changes and multiple themes, all within one composition, which of course makes listening to this music a real fun for true Jazz fans. The compositions are diverse enough to keep the listener interested and balance well between the beautifully melodic ballads and the up-tempo numbers.
The individual performances are all top notch, as expected from these highly experienced musicians. Personally I love the prominent presence of the accordion, a much neglected instrument in Jazz, and the percussion ornamentations, which add another layer of rhythmic contents. But of course the trumpet solo parts, excellent saxophone work, pulsating bass lines and everything else are just right. The overall octet sound is not to busy and allows all instruments to be perfectly audible.
Overall this is a great mainstream album, much more ambitious and advanced musically than the standard albums recorded in this genre. It is not about discovering any new territory, but offers novel approach to arrangement and very solid composition and performance standards. As such it deserves to be listened to and surely enjoyed as well.

  | KRZYSZTOF HERDZIN ~ LOOK INWARD UNIVERSAL MUSIC POLSKA 602557947120 (Barcode: 602557947120) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion Recorded: 2017 Released: 2017
This is a solo piano album by Polish Jazz pianist / composer / arranger Krzysztof HerdzinFind albums by this artist, who is a highly respected musician on the local scene, known for his professionalism and perfectionism. The album, which is Herdzin´s first solo piano venture, presents nine improvised pieces, which as the album´s title and the liner notes describe, are highly personal reflections of his musical life´s experiences, impulsively created on the spur of the moment.
In the last few years of his career Herdzin gradually moved away from Jazz towards other musical areas, mostly contemporary Classical Music and stage music. This album follows the same pattern, perhaps subconsciously, but it has very little to do with Jazz per se, and is much closer to Classical forms of expression. Although the melodic content is very fragmented, the overall mood is mostly lyrical and romantic, often quite minimalist. Herdzin uses mostly single notes and chords are being used sparingly, which creates tension and anticipation, but on the other hand makes the music somewhat difficult to follow after a while.
Overall this is an interesting experiment, which offers a unique glimpse of Herdzin´s complex musical personality. His customary listeners might find this music a tad too difficult to swallow, surely in the initial attempt, but this album grows on the listener in time. Herdzin is unquestionably a highly talented composer and performer, but he is often more appreciated by his peers than by the general public. It is good to see him let go of his disciplined approach and indulge in improvisation, even if the improvisation is somewhat imprisoned by his subliminal sense of order. I hope this album gets the exposure it deserves, and music connoisseurs will discover another facet of Herdzin´s music. Recommended!

  | ZBIGNIEW PREISNER / DOMINIK WANIA ~ TWILIGHT UNIVERSAL MUSIC POLSKA 602577477812 (Barcode: 602577477812) ~ POLAND ~ Special Products Recorded: 2018 Released: 2019
This is a sensational album which presents the music by celebrated Polish composer Zbigniew PreisnerFind albums by this artist, known as one of the most important cinematic contemporary music Masters, performed by virtuoso Polish pianist Dominik WaniaFind albums by this artist, who in the last decade conquered the Polish Jazz piano scene without much competition. The nine solo piano pieces composed by Preisner and interpreted by Wania present on this album are a magical window into the souls of both of these great Artists.
Last year, during the 2018 Haifa Film Festival, which celebrated the music of Preisner, I had the wonderful opportunity to spend many hours in his company, which provided ample opportunity to discuss music, philosophy, and life in general, while exchanging anecdotes and enjoying food together. Preisner the person turned out to be every bit as fascinating as his music.
Preisner´s music is always characterized by several basic qualities, which are intrinsically embedded into the fabric of the sonic visions he creates. They are melody, simplicity and melancholy. Anybody familiar with Preisner´s music is obviously aware of the fact that his music offers some of the most beautiful melodies to appear in cinematic music, which have an universal appeal capturing millions of music (and obviously cinema) lovers the world over. But his music also eschews complexity and unnecessary ornamentation, leaving the ground first and foremost to the melody. He is absolutely right when he states that no amount of sophistication and extrovert decoration is able to do anything, when the melody is lacking, and when the melody is great, not much more is needed. As to the melancholy, or even more precisely the typical "Polish Melancholy", which his music almost epitomizes, it is simply something that comes completely naturally to him, as it in fact happened to all great Polish composes since Frederic ChopinFind albums by this artist.
Dominik Wania is undoubtedly a great virtuoso, but his virtuosity is only one of his many qualities, which distinguish him from most of the other excellent piano players on the Polish scene. The most important of his qualities is his ability to find his very own adaptation of any kind of music he sets forward to perform. His Jazz recordings over the years prove his incredible stylistic diversity and sensitivity, finding him often in diametrically different musical surroundings, but there is not even one case which finds him unable to deal with the music at hand and that in the most spectacular way imaginable.
This album offers best of the two worlds: the wonderful compositions by Preisner with the incredible interpretation of these compositions by Wania. The pieces are all beautifully melodic and simple and melancholic, true pearls of Preisner´s creative powers. Wania´s fingertips take these melodies into his own world, adding his very own, often very subtle but always very evocative interpretation, which floats like another layer over the basic melody. The overall result is delicate, often minimalist, reflective and heartfelt, with the music achieving a state of a mantra lingering in the air.
I recall when Preisner told me about this project when we met and I assured him that he could have not found a more suitable piano Master than Wania to uplift his compositions to another emotional / spiritual level, this of course before I heard the music. After hearing the music it became obvious that his (and mine) instincts were just right on and the result turned out to be simply outstanding.
I don’t like to use "big" words in vain, but this album puts two Geniuses together, and thanks to Higher Powers the combined qualities simply came together like a dream. I can hardly imagine any true music connoisseur staying impartial to this music, which I have played often since I first received it, finding it always striking directly at my heart in days of low and high. I hope many more people can enjoy the same level of musical bliss!

  | ZBIGNIEW PREISNER / LISA GERRARD / DOMINIK WANIA ~ MELODIES OF MY YOUTH UNIVERSAL MUSIC POLSKA 602577665387 (Barcode: 602577665387) ~ POLAND ~ Special Products Recorded: 2018 Released: 2019
This is the second album that presents music by the distinguished Polish composer Zbigniew PreisnerFind albums by this artist, which is performed by top Polish Jazz pianist Dominik WaniaFind albums by this artist (see the album "TwilightFind albums with this title"), this time also featuring the Australian vocal Diva Lisa GerrardFind albums by this artist, who often cooperates with Preisner in various projects. The album presents nine original compositions, seven composed by Preisner and two co-composed by Preisner and Gerrard.
The music, as always with Preisner, is deeply lyrical and melancholic, combines multi genre elements and invokes cinematic visions. The minimalist piano / vocals format creates a deeply romantic atmosphere on one hand but also incredible tension and anticipation, which is even more emphasized by the usage of Gerrard´s "metaphysical language", which consists of nonexistent "words", which can be freely interpreted by the listener and sound like any language that is subconsciously in the listener´s head.
The musical format is somewhat similar to the Classical lieder and song cycles sung in solons across Europe in the 19th Century. And yet the music itself is essentially East European, both Slavic and Jewish, wonderfully brought back to existence by Preisner´s imagination.
Gerrard´s vocal parts are absolutely stunning, which is hardly surprising in view of her career. For me her ability to identify herself completely with the musical origins on this album, which are not her "natural" cultural habitat, is simply out of this world.
Wania, who leaves the focus of interest to Gerrard, as appropriate for the concept, is a sublime accompanist both technically and emotionally. Although on this album he has very little opportunity to solo, his delicate interludes, intros and outros and his playing behind the vocals are all impeccable. Although more closely related to his Classical education rather than to his Jazz explorations, he fully shows his aesthetics and incredible sensitivity, which are always part of his every recording project.
The great facet of Preisner´s music is always the feeling of familiarity it creates, even if this is the first time one hears it. He is always able to pull the right soul strings, which are common to all true music lovers.
Overall this is a beautiful, highly unusual and yet strangely familiar music, which is universal in its directness and intrinsic splendor. Completely avoiding any labeling, this music is simply breathtakingly penetrating!
