This is the 9th album by Czech pianist / composer Nikol BokovaFind albums by this artist, recorded with her regular trio, which includes bassist Martin KocianFind albums by this artist and drummer Michal WierzgonFind albums by this artist. It is the first live recording by this trio. From the fourteen tracks presented on this album, all of which are original compositions by Bokova, eight present the entire suite released on her previous album entitled “FeathersFind albums with this title”, and the rest originate from earlier albums. The sound quality of this live recording is impeccable, although somewhat unusual, at the first encounter, and takes a moment to get acquainted with.
These live performances are of curse somewhat different from the studio recordings, and present different aspects of the music and the trio, and as such offer an interesting new facet of the music. It is obvious that several years of playing together made the trio a precise and ideal tool, which is able to present the music in the best possible form.
The performance is dominated by lyricism and gentle melodic themes, which are ideal for delicate conversations between the piano and the rhythm section, which supports the pianist with great thoughtfulness and empathy. This makes the trio sound like one organic body throughout the entire performance, both on the quiet and relaxed parts and even more so on the more energetic / complex pieces, which border on free improvisation, and which are a completely new aspect of Bokova’s expression palette.
Overall, this is another splendid addition to Bokova’s fast growing recorded legacy, which now includes also live recordings. She is slowly building her very own voice and ambience, which are instantly recognizable, a position rarely achieved by Artist her age. This means that there is a lot more to be expected from her in the future. I can’t wait to hear it all!
