JOELLE LEANDRE / ANDRZEJ KARALOW ~ FLINT
ENSEMBLAGE 5906601652714 (Barcode: 5906601652714) ~ POLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2025 Released: 2025

This is an album by the duo of Improvising Music Artists: French bassist Joelle LeandreFind albums by this artist and Polish pianist / composer Andrzej KaralowFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, all completely improvised, together lasting slightly over half an hour and released on the small Polish label EnsemblageFind albums on this label, which specializes in Improvised Music recordings, established in 2025, with four releases so far.

Leandre (born 1951) is one of world’s most prominent Improvising Music Artists, with a career going back almost five decades and a most impressive and one of the largest recording legacies in the field, with the leading representatives of the genre all over the globe.

Karalow (born 1991) is associated with Classical Music and has an academic career, is devoted mostly to contemporary music and improvisation. He also recorded albums, mostly on small independent Polish labels, and is one of the founders of the Ensemblage label.

The music, although obviously completely improvised, is distinctly related to Classical Music, rather than Jazz, which is a result of Karalow’s background and Leandre’s versatility, allowing her to fit any musical setting with ease. As usual in the case of Improvised Music, the music is very demanding and requires patience and “out of the box” approach. It lacks some of the spontaneity and vigor usually present in Jazz related Improvised Music, and as such is probably more accessible to listeners of contemporary Classical Music, but of course this is a very personal matter of taste.

Overall, this is an interesting, albeit quite complex and intricate piece of music, suitable for a selected group of listeners of contemporary Improvised Music with a Classical Music ambience. Happily, for us all, such ambitious projects are still being created these days and still are being listened to, despite the overwhelming trends of mediocre rubbish.
