MARCIN BOZEK / DANNY KAMINS ~ IGNORANTKA
NOT ON LABEL ~ POLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2024 Released: 2025

This is a live album by a duo comprising of Polish Jazz bassist / composer Marcin BozekFind albums by this artist and American saxophonist / composer Danny KaminsFind albums by this artist, recorded at the Ignorantka club in Lodz. The album presents just four lengthy tracks, which remain uncredited, as usual in the Free Jazz / Improvised Music milieu.

Both Bozek and Kamins are veterans of the Avant-Garde scene in their respective countries, which means that listeners familiar with their recording legacy won’t be surprised by what this album presents. The Improvised Music scene, despite the commonly accepted attitude of the mainstream Jazz snobs that “it all sound the same”, is in fact quite diversified and ranges in many parameters. If one examines the actual degree of freedom, i.e. the lack of melodic / harmonic / rhythmic motifs, this music could be classified as pretty extreme within the idiom. Yet it still includes many other characteristics, like interplay and continuity, which make the music “listenable” and often even fascinating.

Personally I have always regarded Bozek as a highly talented bassist, and his performances here fully justify that opinion anew. Although the sound of the sopranino saxophone is pretty annoying, which for some people might be beyond their suffering threshold, Kamins is obviously a talented improviser and an excellent partner in this duo setting. The usual problem with this music is the fact that whatever aesthetic / intellectual value it might hold at the moment of its creation, it is almost completely forgettable the moment the music stops, and it is doubtful that anybody might wish to listen to it repeatedly, making the concept of recording it for posterity rather futile. But that of course is not my decision.

Overall, this is a challenging, but interesting Free Jazz / Improvised Music adventure, which might have been mesmerizing when heard live, but is way less absorbing on record. Nevertheless, it is a document of a moment, which is the whole idea of Improvised Music, and as such it is absolutely worth of being heard, at least once.
