This is an album by a Mandolinists Orchestra from the small Lower Silesian town of Ziebice, which includes eighteen mandolin players, vibraphonist, pianist, trumpeter, clarinetist, drummer and bassists Dariusz DzuganFind albums by this artist, who also composed and arranged all the music. The album presents thirteen tracks, which are intended to serve as a soundtrack to the 1910 silent movie “Frankenstein”.
To explain the background, Ziebice is very close to the town Zabkowice Slaskie, which was earlier called no other than Frankenstein and gave the name to the sordid legend as a result of the events that happened in that town in the year 1606. Look up the rest ;)
Although initially I considered this album as a curiosity stunt, especially due to the unusual 3D packaging, the music turned out to be quite interesting and perfectly suitable as a movie soundtrack. The compositions are all coherent, with melodic themes and a strong feel of suspense and tension perfectly created by orchestra. The mandolins create an effect, which would have been usually achieved by a string orchestra, but sounds much more interesting and rich.
I have not matched the music with the actual movie, to see if there is a possible synchronization. The original movie is only 16 minutes long, but the running time of the album is thirty-one minutes and a half, so no match here, but of course music can be faded out. Since the film is now in public domain, it would be nice to see it with this music in the background on DVD perhaps – just a suggestion for a Deluxe Edition? Actually there was an associated cue sheet of fourteen musical background pieces, which came out with the original movie, so there is almost a perfect match here.
Overall, this is a very nice piece of cinematic movie, which sounds perfectly on its own. The atmosphere and tension are perfectly achieved and the entire project makes perfect sense. Kudos again to Audio CaveFind albums on this label for releasing such a curious and unusual album regardless of the cost involved with the elaborate 3D packaging, which is one of the most original of its kind. Definitely worth checking out!
