MOSAICO ENSEMBLE ~ LOESS
NOT ON LABEL (Barcode: 647679258846) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017

This is the debut album by young Israeli quartet called Mosaico EnsembleFind albums by this artist, which consists of pianist Dvir SadehFind albums by this artist, oud and hang player Liav BaruchFind albums by this artist, bassist Dror TubulFind albums by this artist and percussionist Shimri AchiamFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven original compositions, all co-credited to Baruch and Sadeh.

The music is a typical Israeli Jazz-World Fusion, which encompasses a plethora of traditional influences of Jewish, mostly Sephardic music, Middle Eastern flavors and rhythmic patterns, European aesthetics, all these combined with Jazzy improvisation. The melodies are mostly melancholic, beautifully woven and perfectly suited for this specific musical dialect. The balance between the Western elements, as represented by the piano, with the Eastern ones, as represented by the oud and percussion, combined with the bass pulsations, which are the Jazz anchor, create a unique amalgam, which sounds both intelligent and enjoyable. In general the music is delicate and rather minimalistic, following the "less is more" principle, which works delightfully here.

The individual performances by all the members of the quartet are just right for this kind of music. Sadeh plays a very European piano, while Baruch and Achiam are all about the Orient, and as already mentioned Tubul is the Jazz link within these explorations. Together they work perfectly as an ensemble, which is the main reason why this music sounds as well as it does. The more Jazz oriented listeners should keeps their ears wide open and discover some nice veiled "quotations".

Overall this is a delightful Jazz-World Fusion album, full of superb music and musicianship, which should keep connoisseurs of the Middle Eastern flavor in that idiom ecstatically happy. Very well done and wholeheartedly recommended!
