JULIO RESENDE ~ SONS OF REVOLUTION
ACT 9980 (Barcode: 614427998026) ~ PORTUGAL ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2023 Released: 2023

This is an album by Portuguese pianist / composer Julio ResendeFind albums by this artist and his Fado JazzFind albums by this artist quartet, which also includes lute-like guitarra portuguesa player Bruno ChavieroFind albums by this artist, bassist Andre RosinhaFind albums by this artist and drummer Alexandre FrazaoFind albums by this artist. Vocalist Salvador SobralFind albums by this artist guests on one track. The album presents eleven tracks, all but one composed or co-composed by Resende and the remaining one arranged by him.

The music is strongly immersed in the Portuguese Fado music, with relatively little place left for Jazz improvisation, which makes it ideal for the many Fado connoisseurs, but less so for listeners who expect this to be a Jazzier album than it is in fact.

Although Resende is the leader and composer of most of the music, the sound of the guitarra portuguesa dominates the proceedings and leaves the piano somewhat on a second plane, which is probably intentional. Fado is a deeply spiritual / gloomy / melancholic music, which is definitely not for everybody and can be trying to an inexperienced listener.

Overall, this is definitely an interesting album for Jazz-World Fusion enthusiasts, especially those who are familiar with Portuguese Fado music, which offers fine performances by the quartet members, but requires patience and open-mindedness to get into.
