  | ANTONIO DAYYANI ~ TROP OP APRIL 142 (Barcode: 5709498114224) ~ DENMARK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2024 Released: 2024
This is the 2nd album by Danish Jazz drummer / composer Antonio DayyaniFind albums by this artist, recorded with an unusual sextet, which includes guitarist Kahlo Heiman KrillFind albums by this artist, pedal steel guitarist Magnus Munk TaekkerFind albums by this artist, pianist Andrea MaagaardFind albums by this artist, bassist Harald HagelskjaerFind albums by this artist and trumpeter Jon AskjaerFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, eight of which are original compositions by Dayyani and one is an arrangement of a traditional Folk song. The total playing time is slightly over half an hour, which hardly qualifies as a full-fledged album, but here we go.
The music, however, is beyond reproach, presenting somewhat typical Scandinavian climates, flirting with time signatures and beautiful melodies floating in space, all excellently performed by the sextet. The soloing is rather limited, and the focus is on ensemble performances, but there is enough exposure to recognize the wonderful trumpet sounds and the gentle melodic piano parts, but everybody on board contributes to the outcome. The sound of the pedal steel guitar is bit weird, but not entirely out of place, and certainly spices the proceedings.
As it often happens in Jazz, the drummers are often excellent composers, and this album certainly attests to that rule. Although the slow tempo often works against many albums, in case of Scandinavian recordings it is almost expected, and experienced listeners are certainly used to it by now. Altogether, it is a truly nice aural experience, which except for the short playing time, is otherwise definitely worth exploring!
Overall, this is a fine, a bit unusual sounding album, even for Scandinavian Jazz, but full of beautiful sound vistas and unexpected explorations, which definitely offers a fresh approach, and as such is highly recommended!
