ANDRES THOR ~ HEREBY
LOSEN 269 (Barcode: 7090025832697) ~ ICELAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2021 Released: 2022

This is an album by Icelandic Jazz guitarist Andres ThorFind albums by this artist, recorded in a trio setting with French bassist Nicolas MoreauxFind albums by this artist and Icelandic drummer Magnus Trygvason EliassenFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original compositions, all by the leader.

The music is all strictly melody based and well within mainstream Jazz idiom. There is little, if any, Scandinavian feel associated with the music, so it lacks a specific identity and could have originated from anywhere. The melodies are round and somewhat lethargic, but listeners looking for a nice, relaxed, almost background music might enjoy it.

The performances are professional, as expected, with the guitar being up front for the entire duration, with a solid acoustic bass backbone and amicable drumming. Thor knows his instrument obviously, playing some nice licks and changing the sound of his instrument between one piece and another, which adds some diversity.

Overall, this is a pretty standard guitar trio album, with relaxed atmosphere and pleasant tunes, but not something that might turn one’s head. Guitar freaks might enjoy and appreciate the guitar sounds, but there is not much excitement otherwise.
