SONNY SIMMONS / MOKSHA SAMNYASIN ~ NOMADIC
SVART 331 (Barcode: 6430050662684) ~ USA ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2012 Released: 2014

This is a studio album by legendary American saxophonist / English horn player / composer Sonny SimmonsFind albums by this artist (born 1933) recorded with the French trio Moksha SamnyasinFind albums by this artist (bassist Thomas BellierFind albums by this artist, drummer Sebastian BismuthFind albums by this artist and sitar player Michel KristofFind albums by this artist). The album presents four original compositions, all co-credited to the four participating musicians.

Simmons, who is recognized as one of the earliest American Jazz Avant-Gardists, has a convoluted and fascinating biography. Following some pioneering Free Jazz recordings in the 1960s, he disappeared from the scene to return some three decades later and since the 1990s recorded a steady stream of albums, despite his advanced age.

The music on this album, although primarily improvised, is more ambient / psychedelic / atmospheric than Free Jazz oriented. Some World Music influences are also audible and the presence of sitar brings on obvious Indian Music associations. Simmons improvises most of the time over a drone-like background played by the trio, and the music develops slowly without much dynamics.

Overall this is a contemplative listening experience, which offers relatively well behaved improvisations over a steady, hypnotic rhythmic background, which could easily serve as background for meditation or a relaxed listening session.
