EGBERTO GISMONTI ~ MUSICA DE SOBREVIVENCIA
ECM 1509 (Barcode: 731451970627) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1993 Released: 1993

This is an album by Brazilian guitarist / pianist / composer Egberto GismontiFind albums by this artist, recorded with his quartet, which also includes keyboardist / guitarist Nando CarneiroFind albums by this artist, cellist Jacques MorelenbaumFind albums by this artist and bassist Zeca AssumpcaoFind albums by this artist. The album presents six tracks, all original compositions by Gismonti.

The music is a wonderful amalgam of Jazz and Brazilian folkloristic themes, which brought Gismonti worldwide fame and admiration. On this album there are also strong ties to Classical Music forms, and the final piece, which lasts for over half an hour, has a structure of a suite and sounds much like a Classical piece.

On this album Gismonti concentrates mostly on his compositions, although the performances are as brilliant as always. The music is mostly highly melodic and the absence of percussion instruments emphasizes the focus on melody rather than rhythmic elements, although those are intrinsically present with the music.

Overall, this is a wonderful album by a great musician, but people expecting to hear the familiar Brazilian rhythmic elements will be disappointed, as this music is mostly chamber / melancholic and introvert. But the patient music lovers should find this to be as brilliant as everything else Gismonti ever recorded.
