ALBERT MANGELSDORFF / PERCUSSION ORCHESTRA ~ LANAYA
PLAINISPHARE 2209 (Barcode: 3561302220925) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1993 Released: 2001

This is a reissue of a live album by German trombonist / composer / bandleader Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist recorded with the Percussion OrchestraFind albums by this artist, a quartet of percussion instrumentalists led by Swiss percussionist Reto WeberFind albums by this artist, Ghanaian African percussion Master Nana Twum NketiaFind albums by this artist, Iranian zarb player Djamchid ChemiraniFind albums by this artist and Adama DrameFind albums by this artist, a djembe player from Burkina Faso. The album presents seven tracks co-credited to Mangelsdorff and the percussionists.

It is probably the least known recording by Mangelsdorff and shows his incredible versatility and interest in music originating from different location around the globe. The music is quite unusual and finds Mangelsdorff improvising on top of the rhythmic patterns performed by the percussionists, which is definitely quite different from the usual Jazz / Improvised Music environment usually associated with Mangelsdorff. But his devoted fans (like yours truly) and lovers of his trombone virtuosity, should find this album quite fascinating.

Overall, this is a very atypical recording, which is of interest mostly to percussion lovers and devoted Mangelsdorff fans, who are open to hear him performing out of his usual musical environment.
