This is an album by British singer / songwriter Rod StewartFind albums by this artist and pianist / composer / bandleader Jools HollandFind albums by this artist, who leads The Rhythm And Blues OrchestraFind albums by this artist, which accompanies Stewart. The album presents thirteen tracks, all of which are famous songs from the Swing Era and Rhythm And Blues Era, with a lovely Jazz oriented arrangements.
Although Stewart is mostly associated with Pop and Rock, he is a big Jazz lover, and his “The Great American SongbookFind albums with this title” series of four albums, recorded between 2002 and 2005, is a superb testimony of his hidden Jazz sympathies. In many respects this album is a continuation of that series.
Stewart’s husky voice is still quite intact and his feel and swing are phenomenal, as always. The orchestral arrangements are sublime and the whole album is a true joy, not to be taken too seriously but enjoyed with open heart.
Overall, Stewart was always one of my favorite British vocalists, and this album is such a great trip down the memory lane, that I simply can’t resist enjoying it. Since the gaps between the songs are extremely short, this album is an ideal soundtrack for a great party – however not many of us old timers have the stamina and endurance to dance for the entire duration ;)
