  | RHYTHMSECT ~ THIS IS DARK FUNK AUDIO CAVE 2024/006 (Barcode: 5908298549865) ~ POLAND ~ Avant-Garde Rock Recorded: 2022 Released: 2024
This is the debut album by the Polish duo RhythmsectFind albums by this artist, comprising of drummer Grzegorz PlutaFind albums by this artist and bassist PatyrFind albums by this artist, who are joined by saxophonist Piotr LyszkiewiczFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tracks, uncredited on the album’s artwork and assumed to be co-composed by the three participants. The album lasts for just over half an hour and is more an EP than a full album.
The music is an attempt to define / create a new sub-genre, which the musicians define as “Dark Funk”, which is pretty descriptive of the contents. The notion offers a dense bass-drums rhythmic background, which is quite Funky, with Free-Jazz oriented saxophone improvisations and electronic on top, with strong relations to dub and drum and bass, which have been with us for decades.
The cumulative effect of the music is pretty Funky and Groovy, no doubt, and a bit “dark” as well, but it certainly does not offer any substantial innovation, groundbreaking new musical path, yet alone defines a new sub-genre or offers anything not previously heard. In addition, it is not really that interesting and after a few tracks the music becomes repetitive and honestly quite boring, with the eternal “Quo Vadis” hanging overhead?
Overall, as much as I am totally in favor of experimentation and exploration of new musical avenues, both in Jazz and other genres, sadly this album represents rather a step backwards into already widely explored territory, than a step forward into uncharted territory, which is conflicting with the Avant-Garde’s ideological propensity.
