  | AMAZING BLONDEL ~ ENGLAND / BLONDEL BGO 0914 (Barcode: 5017261209146) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1972 - 1973 Released: 2010
4th and 5th albums by British band Amazing BlondelFind albums by this artist, which were quite an unusual "bird" among the flourishing UK Folk-Rock flock in the late 1960s / early 1970s. Although many British bands often relied on traditional folk material and even went back several centuries in search for inspiration (PentangleFind albums by this artist, Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist, GryphonFind albums by this artist and even Jethro TullFind albums by this artist), none of them dedicated their entire musical scope to English Early Music, Elizabethan song and minstrelsy, which is exactly what Amazing Blondel did. Formed by Terry WincottFind albums by this artist and John GladwinFind albums by this artist, the band was soon after expanded to a trio with the addition of Eddie BairdFind albums by this artist. The duo managed to record the debut album "The Amazing Blondel And A Few FacesFind albums with this title" for the obscure BellFind albums on this label label and after expanding to a trio they joined the roster of IslandFind albums on this label Records, recording a series of albums for that label, of which the two albums included here were the last. The very fact that a major record label would sign such an unusual fact is a reflection of the times and the character of the legendary Island owner Chris BlackwellFind albums by this artist, who collected on his label a staggering crew of music makers, promoting music on the basis of its merit rather than on its commercial potential – happy and sadly long time gone reality. These two albums are some of the most memorable and unusual musical documents of that era of Artistic freedom. "EnglandFind albums with this title" features music, almost entirely written by Gladwin, who also sings the lead vocals, is completely acoustic and played on instruments, which were used centuries ago and based entirely on the English Early Music format. The lyrics are also kept in the general spirit of the era, spiced with humorous tongue in cheek tidbits. "BlondelFind albums with this title", recorded following Gladwin´s departure from the group, is slightly more Rocky and features Steve WinwoodFind albums by this artist on bass guitar and Simon KirkeFind albums by this artist (FreeFind albums by this artist) on drums as well as many other guest artists including Paul RodgersFind albums by this artist, who sings on one track. In retrospect these two albums remain an ageless masterpiece, unrivaled to this very day and I can hardly imagine any Folk-Rock enthusiast´s record collection, which does not include them. For people who never came across this band before, this reissue is a splendid opportunity to fill a gap, which is unforgettable. Grab it!

  | DANDO SHAFT ~ DANDO SHAFT / LANTALOON BGO 550 (Barcode: 5017261205506) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1971 - 1972 Released: 2002
2nd and 3rd albums by the brilliant British Folk-Rock band Dando ShaftFind albums by this artist. Soon after they recorded their debut album "An Evening With Dando ShaftFind albums with this title", the group expanded to a sextet with the inclusion of female vocalist Polly BoltonFind albums by this artist, which brought them closer sound-wise to other Folk-Rock ensembles like PentangleFind albums by this artist, Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist and Steeleye SpanFind albums by this artist. Stylistically they were closest to Pentangle, as their music was much influenced by Jazz and included a lot of instrumental improvisation, but they differed from most other British bands of the genre by performing all original material, rather than relaying on traditional folklore. The core of the group consisted of guitarists Kevin DempseyFind albums by this artist and Dave CooperFind albums by this artist, multi-instrumentalist Martin JenkinsFind albums by this artist (who excelled on the mandoline), bassist Roger BullenFind albums by this artist and percussionist Ted KayFind albums by this artist – an all acoustic ensemble with beautiful sound and superb instrumental qualities. The first of the two albums included here is especially magical, and often considered as one of the genre´s finest recordings. The second album is slightly more adventurous and Prog oriented, and therefore less favored by the folkies, but in retrospect it stands the tides of time beautifully. Collectors should note that the first album included here was originally released on the short-lived Prog offshoot of RCAFind albums on this label, called NeonFind albums on this label Records. Unfortunately the band fell apart after recording the second album included here, only to ne reunited for one more album five years later. Another live recording was done in the late 1980s. But the first three Dando Shaft albums are definitely a prime example of the British Folk-Rock, which remain almost unsurpassed to this very day. A must!

  | SANDY DENNY ~ LIKE AN OLD FASHIONED WALTZ (DELUXE EDITION) ISLAND 602537002887 (Barcode: 602537002887) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1973 Released: 2012
This is the third solo album by the British singer / songwriter Sandy DennyFind albums by this artist, the undeniable Queen of the British Folk-Rock movement, which flourished from the late 1960s to the mid 1970s. Danny fronted the best Folk-Rock groups of the day, such as StrawbsFind albums by this artist, Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist and FotheringayFind albums by this artist and later concentrated on her splendid solo career, recording four excellent solo albums for IslandFind albums on this label Records. Her life and career was abruptly cut short by her tragic and untimely death at the age of 31.
This album is quite different from Denny´s previous work, less Folk-Rock oriented and with some gentle Jazz touches, an influence she absorbed from her father. Most of the material is original, but a few Jazz standards are also included. The overall atmosphere of the album is deeply melancholic and very introvert, nostalgic and somewhat dark, beautifully performed by her and a superb band, which includes many British Folk-Rock heroes, like guitarists Richard ThompsonFind albums by this artist and her husband Trevor LucasFind albums by this artist, keyboardist John BundrickFind albums by this artist, drummer Dave MattacksFind albums by this artist and others. Several notable British Jazz players also take part, like saxophonist Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and bassist Danny ThompsonFind albums by this artist. Denny´s angelic voice and her unique vocal style are simply stellar. Several of the songs feature beautiful orchestral arrangements.
This new 2CD edition adds a plethora of bonus material, which includes outtakes, demos, alternate versions and previously unreleased live material, which is all worth its weight in gold. It’s a proper tribute to Denny´s remarkable talents and wonderful output she left us to enjoy forever. It is an absolute must to every Folk-Rock fan anywhere on this planet!

  | SANDY DENNY ~ LIVE AT THE BBC ISLAND 984992 (Barcode: 602498499283) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1966 - 1973 Released: 2007
This lavishly and lovingly produced Box Set collects all existing (audio & video) BBC recordings by Folk-Rock heroin Sandy DennyFind albums by this artist, who was not only one of the most distinctive voices of the Golden Age but also a superb songwriter. This collection spans from 1966 to 1973 and covers her solo career, which was before and after her being a member of StrawbsFind albums by this artist, Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist and FotheringayFind albums by this artist. Most of the material included here presents Sandy as “naked” as a singer can appear – just her hair-raising vocals and acoustic guitar or piano (only a few tracks include other backing musicians), which of course is for the best as she never really needed anything more. Her angelic and deeply penetrating voice and her theatrical ability to express the lyrics are so powerful that the experience is almost unparalleled. Most of the songs are her own (music & lyrics) and just a few are her arrangements of traditional folk material. The DVD includes the only footage in existence of Sandy performing. The set also includes beautiful photographs and excerpts of Sandy’s diaries. Sandy’s tragically premature death in 1978 put an end to her exquisite input to the world of music and she is sadly missed. I don’t think anything more needs to be said here – this is absolutely brilliant stuff, beyond essential for anybody who truly loves music and a must in any decent music collection.

  | SANDY DENNY ~ RENDEZVOUS (DELUXE EDITION) ISLAND 602527993607 (Barcode: 602527993607) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1976 - 1977 Released: 2012
This is the fourth and last solo album by the British singer / songwriter Sandy DennyFind albums by this artist, the undeniable Queen of the British Folk-Rock movement, which flourished from the late 1960s to the mid 1970s.
This album was separated by almost three years from its predecessor, which saw Denny rejoining Fairport Convention and recording her fifth album with the group called "Rising For The MoonFind albums with this title" (the group´s tenth album). She also carefully prepared the songs for this album, which are again a change of direction, this time more towards Pop / Rock, emphasized by the inclusion of one of Elton JohnFind albums by this artist´s songs as one of the three non-original songs on this album. As usual she is accompanied by fabulous musicians including many British Folk-Rock heroes, like guitarist Richard ThompsonFind albums by this artist, keyboardist John BundrickFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave PeggFind albums by this artist, drummer Dave MattacksFind albums by this artist and others. Guest star appearances by Steve WinwoodFind albums by this artist and Acker BilkFind albums by this artist are also present. Denny´s angelic voice and her unique vocal style are simply stellar. Several of the songs feature beautiful orchestral arrangements, which were criticized at the time for being a bit overshadowing Denny´s performances, but the certainly don´t make that impression in retrospect and are just right for the occasion.

7th album from 1971 and the only concept album by FC, based on the life story of of John `Babbacombe` Lee, a Victorian-era condemned murderer. All songs are originals by the group members, except one traditional. This is probably the band`s most serious and complex album, but nevertheless it is as beautiful as all the others. An absolute classic of the Folk / Prog genre. Limited Edition

  | FAIRPORT CONVENTION ~ FAIRPORT CONVENTION (EXPANDED EDITION) POLYDOR 044006829128 (Barcode: 044006829128) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1967 - 1968 Released: 2003
This is the debut album by the legendary British Folk-Rock group Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist, which was one of the pioneering and groundbreaking recordings of that genre in Britain. The group was a sextet at the time and comprised of lead vocalist Judy DybleFind albums by this artist, vocalist Ian MacDonaldFind albums by this artist, guitarist Richard ThompsonFind albums by this artist, vocalist / guitarist Simon NicolFind albums by this artist, bassist Ashley HutchingsFind albums by this artist and drummer Martin LambleFind albums by this artist. A band fronted by a female vocalist was a novelty on the British scene. The debut album presented twelve songs, seven of which were originals and five were American Folk-Rock songs.
The musical setting of the debut album clearly shows the band influenced by American Folk-Rock, especially early American Electric Folk-Rock bands like Jefferson AirplaneFind albums by this artist, ByrdsFind albums by this artist, Left BankeFind albums by this artist etc., and singers / songwriters like Bob DylanFind albums by this artist, Joni MitchellFind albums by this artist, Leonard CohenFind albums by this artist, Tim HardinFind albums by this artist and others. Created at the very peak of Flower Power, the album was also influenced by Psychedelia, Avant-Garde Jazz and contemporary Classical music, as appropriate for the period. These influences are much more subtle that those of the American Electric Fork-Rock, but they are the reason why this album is not a stylistic carbon copy but an original attempt to find their own artistic expression and in many respects is much more complex than albums by their American counterparts.
The album was almost completely ignored at the time of its release, which prompted the band to switch to Island Records, where they subsequently released the bulk of their legendary classic material, with Dyble being replaced by the superb Sandy DennyFind albums by this artist. In retrospect the album sounds a bit naïve today, but all things considered it still is a great piece of music and a wonderful document of the times, definitely worth revisiting.
This remastered and expanded edition adds for bonus tracks, which include a rare studio track, the band´s first single and a couple of live French TV recordings as well as a nice booklet with rare photographs and informative comments by Hutchings. This is a first rate treat for the band´s many fans.

  | FAIRPORT CONVENTION ~ LIVE AT ROCKPALAST REPERTOIRE 1437 (Barcode: 4009910143728) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1976 Released: 2022
This is an archival live CD / DVD album by the legendary British Folk-Rock group Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist, captured live in Germany on March 23, 1976 for the TV program Rockpalast. The group included at the time vocalist / violinist Dave SwarbrickFind albums by this artist, bassist / mandolinist Dave PeggFind albums by this artist, drummer Bruce RowlandFind albums by this artist, Breton guitarist Dan ar BrazFind albums by this artist, fiddler Roger BurridgeFind albums by this artist and pianist Bob BradyFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, mostly written by Swarbrick or traditional songs arranged by him. The CD and DVD present the same material.
The group was supporting their 11th studio album “Gottle O`GeerFind albums with this title”, where most of the songs on this album come from, but some older favorites are also included. The band is in its usual top form and brilliant Folk-Rock feel prevails, mixed with some typical British sense of humor. All these musicians are absolute masters of their respective instruments and listening to them performing brings some mighty fine memories of the times long gone. The great sound quality of this recording add to the overall pleasure.
Overall, this is an excellent time capsule of the British Folk-Rock movement, which ruled the British Isles music scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s, to be later largely forgotten. Any previously unreleased material by Fairport Convention is always a pleasant surprise, so just grab a copy!

  | FAIRPORT CONVENTION ~ RISING FOR THE MOON (DELUXE EDITION) ISLAND 602537492527 (Barcode: 602537492527) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1974 - 1975 Released: 2013
This is the 10th studio album by British Folk-Rock legends Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist, the band that basically established Folk-Rock as a genre on the British Isles. It is also one of the two albums (together with "Live ConventionFind albums with this title", which preceded it) to feature the diva of the genre Sandy DannyFind albums by this artist in her second stint with the group. Sandy left the group after recording three groundbreaking albums with them in 1969 (their second to fourth albums: "What We Did On Our HolidaysFind albums with this title", "UnhalfbrickingFind albums with this title" and "Liege & LiefFind albums with this title") to follow her solo career and rejoined them in 1974 after she married Trevor LucasFind albums by this artist, the band´s guitarist at the time. The band also included violinist Dave SwarbrickFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jerry DonahueFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave PeggFind albums by this artist and drummer Dave MattacksFind albums by this artist (who was replaced by Bruce RowlandsFind albums by this artist during the recording session). This was also the first album featuring only original material written by the band´s members and no arrangements of traditional tunes were used.
Danny was obviously quite dominant on this album, both as a writer, contributing seven of the eleven songs on the album, and of course as the lead singer, an area she had absolutely no competition in from any other female vocalist at the time. As a result this is one of the strongest albums Fairport Convention recorded during their illustrious career. This deluxe edition of the album includes some bonus tracks and a second CD with the legendary live concert recorded at the LA Troubadour in 1974 released here in its entirety for the first time.
In retrospect this is a classic album of the British Folk-Rock legacy and with the added value of Sandy Danny´s presence an extraordinary piece of music history, worthy of an honorable place in any serious record collection.

  | FAIRPORT CONVENTION ~ ROSIE UNIVERSAL JAPAN 9485 ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock
8th album from 1973. After several more personell changes the bands still sounds great, especially with Dave Swarbrick on violin and previous members Sandy Danny and Richard Thompson (and his wife Linda) as guests. The sound and feel of this album is more `modern` and less folky, but the quality of the music and the musicians is excellent, as always with this group. Limited Edition

  | G. F. FITZ-GERALD ~ MOUSEPROOF SUNBEAM 5016 (Barcode: 5051125501618) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1970 Released: 2006
Scottish guitarist / singer / songwriter G. F. Fitz-GeraldFind albums by this artist recorded his only album with a bunch of excellent musicians, including some legendary figures like singer Judy DybleFind albums by this artist (Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist), tabla virtuoso Sam GopalFind albums by this artist, sax and flute player Geoff LeighFind albums by this artist and many others. The album was a complete commercial failure at the time of its release, disappearing entirely from the market, to be remembered only by a very few people who ever heard it as a gem of great interest. Finally after so many years the album was reissued, for all of us to enjoy. Fitz-Gerald moved on in the meantime into experimental improvised music (see his album with Lol CoxhillFind albums by this artist) and never recorded in the studio again. The album lost nothing of its original charm and magic and after all these years it’s still an absolute gem. Resembling the efforts of groups like ComusFind albums by this artist and perhaps Third Ear BandFind albums by this artist, this is a completely zany, funny, crazy, wonderful mixture of Psychedelics, Jazz, early Improvised Music and Folk. As usual with such mixtures, it is absolutely beyond any specific genre and placing it under Progressive Rock is the best I can do. I really recommend to everybody to try and get hold of a copy of this – it very well might eventually become your favorite album – you never know. Brilliant stuff!

  | FOTHERINGAY ~ NOTHING MORE: THE COLLECTED FOTHERINGAY ISLAND 602547184825 (Barcode: 602547184825) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2015
This marvelous Box Set collects all the know recordings by the shot-lived Folk-Rock group FotheringayFind albums by this artist, formed by the divine singer / songwriter Sandy DennyFind albums by this artist, after she left Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist in late 1969 shortly after the group completed the recording of their epic fourth album "Liege & LiefFind albums with this title". Denny joined forces with her partner at the time, vocalist / acoustic guitarist Trevor LucasFind albums by this artist and they drafted into the group American-born lead guitarist Jerry DonahueFind albums by this artist, bassist Pat DonaldsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Gerry ConwayFind albums by this artist, who all sung occasional backing vocals.
Denny´s decision to leave Fairport Convention was primarily prompted by her will to sing her original material and move the traditional material a bit into the background and Fotheringay gave her the opportunity to do exactly that. In addition the group had a more Rock oriented sound, with incredible lead guitar work by Donahue. By mid-1970 the group released their first eponymous album, which met with positive reaction by the critics, but sadly achieved only limited commercial success, probably because it was unjustly compared to Fairport Convention, rather than recognized as a completely new direction.
By late 1970 the group has begun recording their follow up album, but things started to disintegrate rapidly and by early 1971 Fotheringay disbanded, with the second album uncompleted. Shortly afterwards Denny launched her career as a solo artists, briefly rejoining Fairport Convention in 1974-1975 and then continued her solo career until her tragic death in 1978. The "Fotheringay 2Find albums with this title" album was reconstructed from the abandoned studio master tapes and partly re-recorded and was finally released in 2008.
In retrospect this collection is a tribute to the incredible talents of Sandy Denny, who remains to this very day the absolute Empress of British Folk-Rock. Her legacy, all recorded in a span of a single decade, constitute some of the most beautiful singing and songwriting in the history of popular music.
This collection includes both Fotheringay albums, a plethora of bonus tracks, demos, alternate tracks, radio broadcasts and live concerts, all spread over three CDs. BBC TV performances are included on a DVD, which is also included. The accompanying booklet is informative and comprehensive and includes many wonderful photographs of Denny and the band members.
This is a remarkable piece of British music history, which to this day sounds almost too good to be true and constitutes an essential part of any decent music collection. Simply a must!

1st album by the wonderful British Prog group GryphonFind albums by this artist, one of the most unique and sophisticated bands to appear on the scene in the 1970s. Formed by students at the Royal Academy of Music in London, the band members were all well educated in classical music, which was evident both in the level of their compositions, as well as in their superb performing skills. Founded by Richard HarveyFind albums by this artist (keyboards, woodwinds and guitars) and Brian GullandFind albums by this artist (woodwinds – especially bassoon – keyboards and vocals), who both shared a deep love for early music, Renaissance and medieval church music, as well as British folk, which determined the group´s musical direction. Combining these elements with some contemporary Rock elements, they managed to achieve a completely unique sound and musical vision, which was somewhere between Folk-Rock groups like PentangleFind albums by this artist and Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist and Early British music ensembles like Amazing BlondelFind albums by this artist. The pair was joined by guitarist Graeme TaylorFind albums by this artist and the trio started performing mostly in the Folk-Rock circles. Later expanded to a quartet, when joined by drummer David OberleFind albums by this artist, the group finally crystallized their stylistic approach. Signed by the legendary TransatlanticFind albums on this label label, they recorded 4 classic albums for the label, all of which are superb examples of British Folk-Rock / Prog and essential pieces of the wonderful puzzle created at the time. The original Pentangle lineup featured on these albums included the charismatic vocalist blessed with an angelic voice: Jacqui McSheeFind albums by this artist, two exquisite and virtuosic guitarists: John RenbournFind albums by this artist and Bert JanschFind albums by this artist and superbly Jazzy rhythm section: bassist Danny ThompsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Terry CoxFind albums by this artist, which together were unparalleled to any other outfit at the time and presented a brilliant amalgam of British Folk, Rock and Jazz, spiced with virtuosic vocal harmonies and instrumental parts. The music is a mixture of superb original material and fabulous arrangements of traditional tunes, all spotlessly and wonderfully performed by the group´s members.
Pentangle basically established the rules of Folk-Rock, Prog-Folk, Jazz-Folk and similar sub-genres, for generations to come and all British Folkies from that time on tried to follow their steps, as the genre flourished between late 1960s and late 1970s. The competition was fierce with such excellent acts as StrawbsFind albums by this artist, Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist, Steeleye SpanFind albums by this artist and others, but Pentangle maintained the leading position until the band fell apart in 1973, only to return by the early 1980s, but that is another story altogether.
This Box Set includes hours of exquisite music, which although closely related to British Folk encompasses various other genres and is diverse, elegant, interesting and entertaining. I can hardly imagine any serious music collection not including this music and if someone does not already own these albums on vinyl or earlier CD reissues, this Box Set is the ultimate solution. An absolute must have by any standard!

  | SPIROGYRA ~ A CANTERBURY TALE CASTLE 1258 ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1971 - 1973 Released: 5050
Although originating from Canterbury, SpirogyraFind albums by this artist is not considered as part of the Canterbury Scene gang. They were a folk / rock or rather an acid / folk group, influenced as much by the British folk music as by the Psychedelic movement of the late 1960’s. Fronted by Martin CockerhamFind albums by this artist, who also wrote all of their material, and including the wonderful singer Barbara GaskinFind albums by this artist, they recorded only three albums: St. RadigundsFind albums with this title (1971), Old Boot WineFind albums with this title (1972) and Bells, Boots And ShamblesFind albums with this title (1973), all included here with additional, previously unreleased material. In retrospect it is quite clear that Spirogyra were one of the most accomplished representatives of the genre, sadly little known in comparison to other similar outfits like Steeleye SpanFind albums by this artist, Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist or The Incredible String BandFind albums by this artist (to which they were the closest in style). The quality of the material, as well as the truly excellent instrumental work (by additional band members changing from album to album) is amply documented here for us to enjoy. The albums stand the test of time with ease, being as moving and exciting today as they were when originally recorded. For fans of the genre this is an absolute must!

  | STEELEYE SPAN ~ ALL THINGS ARE QUITE SILENT: COMPLETE RECORDINGS 1970-71 CHERRY TREE 022 (Barcode: 5013929692206) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2019
This Box Set collects the reissues of the first three magnificent albums by the seminal British Folk-Rock group Steeleye SpanFind albums by this artist: "Hark! The Village WaitFind albums with this title" (1970), "Please To See The KingFind albums with this title" (1971) and "Ten Man Mop Or Mr. Reservoir Butler Rides AgainFind albums with this title" (1971). The group was formed by the Godfather of the British Folk-Rock movement bassist / songwriter Ashley HutchingsFind albums by this artist following his departure from Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist. The first lineup of the group, which recorded the first album in this collection, included also vocalist Maddy PriorFind albums by this artist, vocalist / multi-instrumentalist Tim HartFind albums by this artist, vocalist Gay WoodsFind albums by this artist and her husband multi-instrumentalist Terry WoodsFind albums by this artist. Following the departure of Gay and Terry, guitarist Martin CarthyFind albums by this artist and violinist Peter KnightFind albums by this artist joined the group and took part in the recording of the remaining two albums in this collection.
Steeleye Span was the absolute epitome of British Folk-Rock, performing mostly traditional British music with very few exceptions. The superb arrangements, which are based on wonderful vocal harmonies and exceptional instrumental work, made the group truly invincible in their idiom, and these sublime recordings are absolutely timeless and sound wonderfully contemporary to this very day.
Under Hutchings leadership the group showed deep respect towards the incredibly rich sources of traditional British music and brought it up to date with flair and elegance. Their approach was mimicked by many of their contemporaries and basically all Folk-Rock groups since can be referenced to these recordings. Prior´s exquisite vocals are an absolute treasure of this idiom and she remains invincible in her reign, with a long list of solo albums in addition to her work with Steeleye Span and other artists.
Only the third album in this collection is expanded by four studio bonus tracks. All three albums were reissued individually in 2005 / 2006 by CastleFind albums on this label Records and the second and third albums were expanded with the inclusion of wonderful BBC sessions, sadly not present here.
Overall this is an absolute essential material for all British Folk-Rock connoisseurs, since within the boundaries of that genre things don´t ever get better than what this Box Set offers.

  | STEELEYE SPAN ~ HARK! THE VILLAGE WAIT CASTLE 1251 (Barcode: 5050749412515) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1970 Released: 2005
1st album by the finest UK Folk-Rock band in all times - Steeleye SpanFind albums by this artist. Although Steeleye Span had fierce competition to the title of the leading force in UK Folk-Rock in their early days from bands like Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist and PentangleFind albums by this artist, in retrospect they proved to be the winners in the long rum and emerged as the only band still active 35 years later. Their spectacular recorded legacy over the years not only managed to sustain a level of excellence rarely met by any other musical outfit, but also contains a cannon and core of the genre’s essence. The band was formed in the late 1969, when bass player Ashley HutchingsFind albums by this artist left Fairport Convention (after recording the seminal Liege & LiefFind albums with this title album) to start his own band and pursue a more traditional route than his former band was taking. Hutchings joined forces with Tim HartFind albums by this artist, Gay WoodsFind albums by this artist, Terry WoodsFind albums by this artist and the singer Maddy PriorFind albums by this artist to form the first version of Steeleye Span, which lasted only a few months, but managed to record this exceptionally beautiful album. Hart and Prior (who were a couple) were to remain in all the future versions of the band, with the cream of the crop of UK Folk-Rock players joining them on a less permanent basis. As on all the early Steeleye Span albums, the material consists of traditional Folk tunes, arranged and often altered by the band members. Prior’s superb vocals, vocal harmonies with other band members and exceptional instrumental work are all present here and will be the band’s trademark for years to come. The incredible sensitivity and respect for the origins of the music and incredible musicianship guarantees an unsurpassed mark of quality. Absolutely essential!

  | TREES ~ ON THE SHORE (EXPANDED EDITION) SONY BMG 705765 (Barcode: 886970576529) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1970 Released: 2007
2nd and final album by UK Folk-Rock group TreesFind albums by this artist. Although Trees existed for just a brief period of time – formed in 1969 and disbanded in early 1972 – they managed to release two seminal albums, which are considered classics of the genre. Trees had some similarities with other contemporary Folk-Rock ensembles (PentangleFind albums by this artist, Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist, Steeleye SpanFind albums by this artist, etc.): they were fronted by an exceptional female vocalist (Celia HumphrisFind albums by this artist) and they played arrangements of traditional British folk tunes in addition to their self-penned material. But there were also important differences, which made them unique: they were strongly influenced by the Psychedelic movement and they used a strong lead electric guitar (Barry ClarkeFind albums by this artist) rather than acoustic instruments. In retrospect both of their albums kept formidably the original magic over the years and are worthy of a special place in any serious Folk-Rock album collection. The bonus disc added to this beautiful edition is also quite unique and interesting: Following a sampling of one of the album’s songs by a contemporary pop group in 2006, the album returned to public attention with a bang. The original group members decided to remix most of the original album, adding (mostly) keyboards (Bias BoshellFind albums by this artist) and some guitar to bring the album up to contemporary sound. The result is quite brilliant and surprising. Although touching original material can be considered sacrilegious, in this case it works wonderfully. An early demo track and a BBC recording are also added. Definitely a treasure!

  | TREES ~ THE GARDEN OF JANE DELAWNEY (EXPANDED EDITION) SONY BMG 735671 (Barcode: 886973567128) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock Recorded: 1969 - 1970 Released: 2008
1st album by the little known UK Folk-Rock band TreesFind albums by this artist, which recorded just two albums before it disbanded. Trees followed the formula set by other contemporary Folk-Rock bands, like Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist, Steeleye SpanFind albums by this artist and PentangleFind albums by this artist), with female vocalist (Celia HumphrisFind albums by this artist) fronting the band, a repertoire consisting both of traditional British folk and self-penned material, mostly by the band´s bassist Bias BoshellFind albums by this artist. The main difference was the use of lead electric guitar (Barry ClarkeFind albums by this artist), which was featured much more prominently than other representatives of the genre usually allowed for, as well as the Psychedelic influence of the period, which other Folk-Rock bands largely ignored. Altogether a beautiful album and a classic of the genre, now finally remastered and expanded with four bonus tracks, two of which are recent recordings of songs that the band intended to include on this album, but never did. This is a long awaited reissue, which all Folk-Rock enthusiasts will find indispensible for their collection and enjoy immensely.
