ADVENT ~ CANTUS FIRMUS
NOT ON LABEL (Barcode: 702987024726) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1992 - 2006 Released: 2006

Every time an album like Cantus FirmusFind albums with this title by AdventFind albums by this artist lands in my lap a lot of questions pop up immediately. Since I consider myself quite knowledgeable in all matters Prog, the most intriguing one being “How came I’ve not heard about this band earlier, considering this is their 2nd album?” Mind you this happens very rarely and even more so when the album in question is as phenomenal as this one, almost unbelievably phenomenal. Let me start with a bold statement here: “This is one of the best Prog albums ever made!” I know many of my readers at this point start shrugging and say: “Here he goes again”. Let me try and explain (to the best of my ability) why I think this statement is 100 % true. Since this album was recorded in the 2000’s, the musicians had the benefit of perception of the Progressive Rock’s vast tradition accumulated during the genre’s 30+ years of history, thus being able to incorporate this insight in their creation. I emphasize the role of perception here (either conscious or subconscious) in contrast to an attempt to imitate, which of course makes all the difference. This album creates a perfect amalgam of the entire genre’s tradition up to that point (I mean the mainstream of the tradition centered on Symphonic Prog) and is in a sense a concise summary of the genre’s essence. In other words when asked (for the millionth time) “What is Prog?” I can now calmly say: “Listen to this album – everything you need to know about Prog is there.” Of course some influences on this music are immediately more obvious than others, the main one being Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist. Starting with the a cappella opening tune and the use of muliti-layered vocal harmonies throughout the album, the quirky rhythm changes and the devilishly clever concatenation of short themes into a continuous musical epic (like in the central 18+ minutes long tour de force piece here). Another thing is that in every respect (i.e. stylistically, sonically, conceptually, etc.) this album really belongs in the 1970’s. Not that is sounds dated (God forbid), but the fact that it was made in the 2000’s makes this entire venture a true miracle. Life is not fair of course, so just imagine this album released with Gentle Giant on the cover and I can assure you that it would have been considered one of the (if not the) best GG releases. Well, it has Advent on the cover, which should make no difference, but unfortunately it does. The only solace can be found in the fact that if one wishes to imagine how GG would have sounded in the 2000’s, all one has to do is to listen to this album. If you are a food connoisseur, this album is a French meal with a dash of YesFind albums by this artist as a starter, great Emerson, Lake & PalmerFind albums by this artist soup with main course a la Gentle Giant and a GenesisFind albums by this artist dessert. Add to this a vintage red vine full of talent, imagination, creativity and instrumental perfection and you get a perfect Prog meal called “Cantus Firmus”. A bit about Advent: They are an American quartet with a guitarist, two brothers who play keyboards and a drummer. One of the brothers is the lead vocalist and the other supplies the vocal harmonies (makes perfect sense). The double keyboards provide a rich, orchestral sound which plenty of opportunities to insert a multitude of interesting ditties, which require repetitive listening in order to be noticed and appreciated. The album includes bonus material recorded for but not included on the band’s debut release, which is every bit as strong as the rest of the album. There is no way to finish this but with another (shouted) question: “Where (and when) is the next album?!!!” Absolutely essential.

ARABESQUE ~ TALES OF POWER
SHROOM 2111 ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1976 - 1979

Re-discovered by the same company that brought us HandsFind albums by this artist, this material recorded by ArabesqueFind albums by this artist was never released on record. It is probably one of the finest examples of US Prog ever recorded, with immensly complicated compositions, great instrumental passages and constant mood changes. Stylistically somewhere between Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist and Happy The MenFind albums by this artist.

ARTHUR BROWN ~ TANTRIC LOVER
LEMON 147 (Barcode: 5013929774728) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2000 Released: 2009

This criminally overlooked album by British maverick Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist marks his return to active musical life following the stroke he suffered, while on stage, in 1994. Older and more relaxed, Brown got together a superb acoustic band to accompany him on this album, which featured such distinguished players as drummer Malcolm MortimoreFind albums by this artist (Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist), guitarist Rik PattenFind albums by this artist, bassist / cellist Stan AdlerFind albums by this artist and several others. The set of twelve new songs written by Brown are all brilliant both musically and lyrically and his vocal delivery, especially against the acoustic background, is breathtaking. Brown´s voice seems to be completely untouched by time and his almost operatic range and intelligent dynamics is second to none. Since the original release of this album (on the VoiceprintFind albums on this label label) is now out of print, this is a great opportunity to get to know this marvelous album – don´t miss it as it is as good as his legendary debut recording, quite different of course, but equally brilliant. Wholeheartedly recommended!

ARTHUR BROWN ~ THE VOICE OF LOVE
COTE BASQUE 07002 (Barcode: 823566433125) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007

This is a criminally overlooked album by the great British Rock singer / songwriter / bandleader Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist, the unsung hero of the British scene. The album was recorded with multi-instrumentalist Nick PynnFind albums by this artist, who also arranged most of the songs, guitarist Rik PattenFind albums by this artist and drummer Mark St. JohnFind albums by this artist, who arranged two of the songs. A couple of additional musicians also participate. The album presents eleven songs, eight of which are originals by Brown and three are arrangements of songs written by others, including a stunning version of the legendary “Kites”, which was a hit for Simon Dupree and the Big SoundFind albums by this artist (i.e. early Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist) in 1967.

The music, which is almost completely acoustic and offers a somewhat Folkish sound, is mostly ballad oriented and quite atypical of Brown’s extrovert / extravagant image. It presents a unique opportunity to hear Brown as a lyrical vocalist, but obviously his idiosyncratic vocal characteristics are all firmly present, including the falsetto / vibrato parts, which show his operatic-like abilities. But all in all the album is a beautiful collection of “love songs”, with the Brownish twist of course.

Overall, this is a brilliant and sadly obscure album by one of the most talented and multifaceted heroes of the British Rock scene, which exposes the gentler side of his musical personality. Loaded with great melodies and excellent instrumental work, this is a gem from start to finish, and since it can still be found (with some difficulty), I wholeheartedly advice to grab a copy while still available.

CATHEDRAL ~ STAINED GLASS STORIES
SYN-PHONIC 03 ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1978 Released: 1996

Only album by CathedralFind albums by this artist, one of the best and universally acclaimed US first generation Prog bands (not to be confused with the band Cathedral, which existed in the 1990s). Although the influences of UK classics (YesFind albums by this artist, GenesisFind albums by this artist and Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist) are obvious, Cathedral managed to avoid just copying the masters and created a classic album in the Symphonic Prog genre, which is still very much respected and loved.

COLOSSEUM ~ RESTORATION
REPERTOIRE 1430 (Barcode: 4009910143025) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock

Recorded: 2021 Released: 2022

The legendary British Prog / Fusion band ColosseumFind albums by this artist returns with a new album eight years after their previous studio recording. The lineup, still a sextet, includes three “founding” members: vocalist Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist, guitarist Clem ClempsonFind albums by this artist and bassist Mark ClarkeFind albums by this artist, and three new members: keyboardist Nick SteedFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Kim NishikawaraFind albums by this artist and veteran drummer Malcom MortimoreFind albums by this artist (Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist). The album presents ten songs, most written by the band members, with a couple of songs written by others.

The music is mostly Blues-Rock oriented, and has less (if any) Jazz influences than the previous albums, despite the saxophone present in the lineup. The songs are all solid and highly melodic, but lack the “twist” present in the old Colosseum material.

Farlowe is still a formidable vocalist and Clempson still plays some great guitar solos, but the band is but a shadow of the old Colosseum image. Of course they are better than most contemporary Rock bands, but that is hardly a challenge after all.

Overall, this is a very nice Blues-Rock / melodic Rock album, perfectly executed by veteran musicians, which is a great fun to listen to, but appearing under the Colosseum name is somewhat a misappropriation IMHO. Assumably Colosseum fans will all get a copy…

Debut album by one of the most impressive, extraordinary and eclectic bands in the Prog Rock History. Gentle Giant was known for the complexity and sophistication of its music and for the varied musical skills of its members, all of them, except the first two drummers, were multi-instrumentalists. The Shulman Brothers (Derek, Ray and Phil), Kenny Minnear, Gary Green and Martin Smith with additional musicians (Paul Cosh, tenor horn on ´Giant´ and Calire Deniz, cello on ´Isn´t it quiet and cold´) were a great ensamble. The band´s music was considered complex even by progressive rock standards, drawing on a broad swathe of music incluiding Folk, Jazz, Bluez, Classical Music, Baroque, Mediaeval Music, Modernist Chamber Music elements. In this work, we found multi-part vocal harmonies, complex lyrics, frequente changes in tempo, frequent use of syncopation and polymeters, use of complex melodies, frequently contrasting harmonies with dissonance, extreme use of instrumental and vocal counterpoint, use of clssical and mediaeval instrumentation, use of musical structures typically associated with Classical Music (madrigal, fuga, etc, etc) and the consistent use of stated exchanged and recapitulated muscial themes exchangend between instruments. ´Giant´,´ Alucard´,´Nothing to all´,´Funny ways´, ´Why not?´, are excelent tracks of this extraordinary albumn. The group´s unique approach to writing, singing, performing and arranging their music set then apart from all the rest of Prog movement, which was at its peak at the time. Packed with incredible talent and unorthodox stylistic idiosyncrasies, Gentle Giant were giants indeed and they managed to change the face of music and influence generations of contemporary and future musicians. The sextet was capable of producing a complex instrumental sound and incredible vocal pyrotechnics, based on madrigal-like choir techniques. Musically they also used unusual chord structures and strangely odd meters, crating stunning pieces of unparalleled intricacy. The result is absolutely unsurpassed by any other Prog outfit active at a time and each of their early albums, this one included, is an absolutely timeless masterpiece. Absolutely essential!

3rd album by seminal British Prog band Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist, which was their first attempt to create a concept album around a story about three childhood friends drifting apart in time, resulting in one of Prog´s timeless masterpieces. GNIDROLOG ~ IN SPITE OF HARRY`S TOE-NAIL / LADY LAKE
BGO 637 (Barcode: 5017261206374) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2004

1st and 2nd albums by brilliant British Prog outfit GnidrologFind albums by this artist, one of the best representatives of the genre, who for some incomprehensible reason failed to make any impact at the time and were largely discovered decades later by new generation of Prog fans. Led by twin brothers Colin GoldringFind albums by this artist (lead vocals) and Stewart GoldringFind albums by this artist (lead guitars), the group also included Peter CowlingFind albums by this artist on bass and Nigel PegrumFind albums by this artist on drums. Saxophonist John EarleFind albums by this artist joined the group in time for the second album. All the group members played additional instruments and as an ensemble were able to produce a most impressive instrumental variety. Their true strength however was the incredibly complex music they composed, which was more advanced than that of most of their contemporaries. Frequent tempo changes, quirk passages, uneven beats, in short everything that makes music interesting, were all part of their musical trademark. Although the band obviously had their unique voice and did not copy or was not especially influenced by any of their peers, Prog aficionados will find in their music traces of King CrimsonFind albums by this artist, Jethro TullFind albums by this artist, Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist and basically any known British Prog act active at the time, although to be completely fair it is worth mentioning that Gnidrolog probably used (or invented) many of the tricks of the trade before any of the others did. Following the complete commercial failure of the two albums, the group disbanded and was never heard about again, until they re-surfaced with a re-union recording almost 30 years later. These two albums firmly belong to the early Prog Canon and are worthy of discovery by anybody who missed them until now. Absolutely classic stuff!

HANDS ~ HANDS
SHROOM 96001 ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1977 - 1980

1st album by the little known band HandsFind albums by this artist, which recorded a Prog gem, considered by many to be one of the best ever US releases. Very much in the Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist tradition, with sophisticated melodies and rhythm changes. Mostly instrumental, including violin, with great interplays between the group members. Delightful and an absolute must!

MOETAR ~ FROM THESE SMALL SEEDS
NOT ON LABEL ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2010 Released: 2010

This is an excellent debut album by US Prog group MoeTarFind albums by this artist, which consists of vocalist Moorea DickasonFind albums by this artist, guitarist Matthew HeulittFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Matt LebofskyFind albums by this artist, bassist Tarik RagabFind albums by this artist and drummer David M. FloresFind albums by this artist. Of the eleven tracks on this album the bassist composed and wrote the lyrics to nine and the remaining two are by the keyboardist. Listening to the album for the first time might be quote a shock, as one doesn´t expect anything nearly as good as this from an unknown band, but miracles obviously do happen. The vocalist´s incredible ability to lead the complex melody lines is phenomenal and the rest of the band members do an excellent job from start to finish, maintaining a magic atmosphere, which is completely unique and fresh. The rhythmic patters are quirky and most of the time up tempo with a dazzling irregularity, which makes the listener (at least in my case) glow with happiness – it is like listening to Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist for the first time. I really hope these musicians will be able to repeat this incredible level of musicianship and composition in their next release, but even if they fail they already created one masterpiece, which is more that most bands ever do. This is an absolute must for every Prog fan on this planet. Bloodcurdling stuff!

OAKSENHAM ~ CONQUEST OF THE PACIFIC
MUSEA 4727 (Barcode: 3426300047274) ~ ARMENIA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007

2nd album by the phenomenal Prog band OaksenhamFind albums by this artist from Armenia, following the privately issued debut. The instrumental sextet (flute, violin, guitar, keyboards, bass and drums) and several guest musicians (harp and a woodwind ensemble) have at their disposal the power of an entire chamber orchestra, which suits their music perfectly. The music itself is a magnificent amalgam of Classical and classic Prog, which is sometimes called Chamber Prog, but it truly goes beyond all attempts of categorization. Most of it is original, including the incredible suite (almost half-hour long), composed by the band’s bassist Vahagn PapayanFind albums by this artist, which gives the album its title. The band did include two covers of Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist tunes (“Talybont” and “On Reflection”), obviously in an attempt to disclose their influences, but these superb arrangement enhance the original compositions to such a divine level that one could see them as new creations. The entire effect is completely stunning and I must admit I have never heard such a perfect cross-genre amalgamation before. This music is such a great example of how musical ideas can grow in the future, with no limitations and pre-conceptions. This is a delicious meal of musical intelligence, complexity, ingenuity and good taste. Definitely the best Prog album of 2007 and one that should join the very few albums that truly deserve to become a part of Prog’s canon for future generation to enjoy and admire. The fact that it comes from Armenia of all places only proves that the main focus on music creativity moved away from the historical cradles of Prog. Any music lover, even strictly Classical music listeners, should be able to delight in this magnificent opus and for Prog fans this is as essential as air. Absolutely essential!

PENTWATER ~ OUT OF THE ABYSS
SYN-PHONIC 07 ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1973 - 1976 Released: 1990

This is the "posthumous" (released after the group disbanded) album by American Prog group PentwaterFind albums by this artist, which comprised of founding members multi-instrumentalist Mike KonopkaFind albums by this artist and drummer Tom OrsiFind albums by this artist and guitarist Phil GoldmanFind albums by this artist (who was later replaced by Ron FoxFind albums by this artist), keyboardist Ken KappelFind albums by this artist and bassist Ron LeSaarFind albums by this artist. The album includes eight studio tracks recorded between 1973 and 1976 and one live track from 1976. The music is all original and was composed mostly by Konopka and Kappel. This material was recorded before their only eponymous album was recorded and released in 1977, shortly before they disbanded in 1978. They re-united in 2002 and recorded a new album "Ab-DulFind albums with this title".

It is quite clear in retrospect that Pentwater was one of the most interesting American Prog outfits active in the 1970s, with only a handful of competitors like HandsFind albums by this artist and a few others. The album clearly shows that they were original, dedicated and above all honest, clearly admitting influences (Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist, etc.), which are detectable but never overshadow their own unique sound and musical direction. Everything that great Prog requires in present here: superb expanded and multi-thematic compositions, frequent tempo changes, long instrumental improvised passages, in short Prog heaven.

Sadly Pentwater shared the fate of many other Prog acts, simply by being too good to be "popular" enough in order to achieve commercial success. But their recorded legacy is a fine example of what great Prog was all about then, which is still very much valid today. Hopefully they will be re-discovered by the new generation of Prog lovers, who should definitely try and find this gem rather than getting the umpteenth release by dinosaurs who forgot to leave the stage. Buy or die!

ROOTS OF CONSCIOUSNESS ~ ROOTS OF CONSCIOUSNESS
SYN-PHONIC 12 ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1989 - 1993 Released: 1994

This is the only album by American Prog group Roots Of ConsciousnessFind albums by this artist, which comprised of guitarist / vocalist Brian NeuwirthFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Bill SchuesslerFind albums by this artist, bassist Mat MillerFind albums by this artist and drummer Robert StallingsFind albums by this artist. Neuwirth composed all but one of the albums ten tracks and most of the lyrics and was the most dominant musician in the group. Several guest musicians also participate on selected tracks.

The album is one of those obscure Prog gems that almost nobody knows about but deserves a much wider recognition for being one of the best American Neo-Prog efforts of the early 1990s. It took the group four years to complete this album, as it often happens with self produced efforts, and it is very well made indeed. The music is deeply rooted in the 1970s Prog tradition, but avoids the trap of being derivative or obviously copying any specific sources. It has many of the GenesisFind albums by this artist theatrics, most obvious in Neuwirth´s vocal delivery, but also the complexity of Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist and other characteristic Prog qualities. However the group remains completely unique and these references to past models are more hints that clearly conveyed statements.

The music and the performances are rock solid from start to finish, with great vocals, intelligent lyrics and excellent instrumental passages, in short a great Prog album by any standard. It´s a pity they never carried on and recorded more music, but at least they can be proudly remembered by this one. Grab it if you can!

SENOGUL ~ SENOGUL
MYLODON 049 (Barcode: 3426300047038) ~ SPAIN ~ Progressive Rock

1st album by young Spanish Prog band SenogulFind albums by this artist, an instrumental quintet fronted by two lead guitarists Pedro MenchacaFind albums by this artist and Israel SánchezFind albums by this artist, with Eduardo SalueñaFind albums by this artist on keyboards, Pablo CanalisFind albums by this artist on bass and Alex ValeroFind albums by this artist on drums. The band plays a stunning set of self-composed material, full of long improvised passages with quirky rhythm changes and interchanging themes. A long list of guest musicians enhances the band’s sound with a variety of additional instrumentation, such as saxophones, flutes and even a whole choir on one of the tracks. The music is completely original but if parallels have to be drawn, Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist, Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist and some of the RIO bands come to mind. The music however manages to keep strong melodic character at all times, in spite of the extensive improvisations. It is truly heartwarming to hear such excellent music being made these days, contrary to the sea of boredom dominating the dwindling music market. Highly recommended!

SHESHET ~ SHESHET (30TH ANNIVERSARY EXPANDED EDITION)
NMC (ISRAEL) 82366 (Barcode: 7290011507602) ~ ISRAEL ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1977 Released: 2007

Eponymous album by Israeli group SheshetFind albums by this artist led by Shem Tov LevyFind albums by this artist, who also wrote almost all the music, and including the best local musicians at the time. This Prog / Jazz-Rock outfit created a great blend of western, Latin and middle-eastern music, which sounds as fresh today as it did at the time of the recording. Lead vocals are by Yehudith RavitzFind albums by this artist, who later became a major Israeli star. The compositions are heavily influenced by Prog (Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist in particular) and the album ranks among Israel’s all time best albums. The beautiful new edition includes as a bonus the extra-rare (just a few copies of the original LP are known to be in existence) second album by Sheshet, never previously released on CD, which the group recorded as soundtrack of the Israeli film “The Stretcher March” (see Side note). The only vocal track on the second album is sung by no other than Gidi GovFind albums by this artist, who also played a leading role in the film. The reissue of this album is a major feast for the Israeli Prog discography.
Side Note: Following the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the Israeli society entered a period of major upheaval and a radical re-examination of its values and social / political perspectives. The pioneering and bold film “The Stretcher March” was the first of its kind to openly examine the moral and psychological difficulties faced by soldiers in the IDF, a subject that was a complete taboo beforehand. This film and later other similar films and books written / published in the late 1970’s were all a result of this fascinating period in Israel’s society formative years.

T.A.O. ~ THE ABNORMAL OBSERVATIONS
UNICORN 5034 (Barcode: 777078913463) ~ POLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2005 Released: 2006

Excellent debut album by Polish Prog band T.A.O.Find albums by this artist, comprising of vocalist / guitarist Adam JurewiczFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Kamil UrbanskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Lukasz AdamczykFind albums by this artist and drummer Robert SztorcFind albums by this artist, which includes some great music, quite different and unique in comparison to most other Prog bands. Although somewhat influenced by Prog Metal bands like Dream TheatreFind albums by this artist, the band goes deep into the Prog history and uses phrasing developed earlier by groups like Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist and the Canterbury movement. Some heavy guitar riffs do appear occasionally, but the group is definitely at its best when playing quiet, often acoustic music, with splendid piano work by the keyboardist. The music is full of surprises, tempo changes and nice “eccentricity”, often synonymous with the best Prog heroes. Some slight Jazz influence is also present, making the entire musical experience an interesting musical journey. So far there is no sign of a follow up, so this might be their solitary effort, which would be a pity. In the meantime, this is definitely worth investigating, the sooner the better!

TESSERACT ~ TESSERACT
NOT ON LABEL ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1996 - 1997 Released: 1997

1st album by obscure US Prog quintet TesseractFind albums by this artist, which presents quite an ambitious, almost totally instrumental set of compositions, heavily influenced by Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist and Classical Music, sort of GG goes Baroque. The front instrument is the violin, played by obviously classically trained Karen BentleyFind albums by this artist, with keyboardists and the band´s main composer Don TillmanFind albums by this artist supplying all most of the melody lines using an array of instruments, including the Mellotron. The only non-original piece on the album is the band´s adaptation of a BachFind albums by this artist composition, which suits the bill. As nothing was heard from the band in over a decade now, this might be their only recording, but it is a little gem that well deserves to be remembered. The more classically inclined Prog lovers will definitely enjoy this album very much, as well as all GG aficionados. Recommended!
