ARTHUR BROWN ~ VAMPIRE SUITE TRACK 1035 (Barcode: 823566010029) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 2003 Released: 2003 This is another criminally overlooked album by the great British Rock singer / songwriter / bandleader Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist, the unsung hero of the British scene. The album was recorded with drummer Mark BrzezickiFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Josh PhilipsFind albums by this artist (ex-Procol HarumFind albums by this artist), bassist Richard StudholmeFind albums by this artist and guitarist Roger ManningFind albums by this artist. Several additional musicians play on selected tracks, including a brass section. The album includes two CDs: CD1 presents a thirteen-tracks musical suite, while CD2 presents a recitation of the fifty+ minutes long story, which is the concept behind the suite. All the music is co-credited to Brown, Brzezicki and Philips. The music is absolutely brilliant, exactly what one might expect from Brown, with great melodic Rock oriented songs, great Brass arrangements, superb Hammond organ solos and everything needed to make it a gas. Brown is in incredible form and so are all the musicians, and the resulting album has not a dull moment. Brown’s operatic / theatrical vocals lost nothing of their charm over time and the album proves that he was active “behind the scenes” continuously over the years, in complete contrast to his “one hit wonder” status. Overall, this is a wonderful Rock album, full of great songs and superb instrumental work, which should keep every Rock / Prog fan absolutely happy. Unfortunately, the album disappeared into the haze many years ago, but it is certainly worth searching for. Satisfaction guaranteed – there is only one Arthur Brown out there and he is an absolute wizard.

CHRIS FARLOWE ~ WAITING IN THE WINGS MIG 00962 (Barcode: 885513009623) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1991 Released: 2013 This is a reissue of an album recorded by the British Blues-Rock vocalist Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist in the early 1990s, following a five years long period of inactivity in the recording studio. The songs on this album were recorded during several studio sessions, featuring different lineups. Despite the stellar team of musicians and a very solid collection on songs, the album was rejected by the Major record labels and was finally released on a tiny Spanish label BarsaFind albums on this label Records (originally titled simply "Farlowe") and than on FreestyleFind albums on this label Records in UK (with a different mixes of two songs), but disappeared from the market almost immediately. This reissue adds four bonus tracks, two of which are the original mixes of the two a/m songs and two more, which are live recordings. Obviously produced for the US market, this album has a much more Rock oriented sound and luster, taking Farlowe away from his Blues-Rock roots. Nevertheless it is still a very solid album as far as Farlowe´s vocal delivery is concerned and for his many fans this album deserves a proud place in their collection. Sadly it will take another five years for Farlowe to record another studio album.

The album was recorded by Figiel playing the Hammond organ and with an excellent team of musicians that included guitarist Dariusz KozakiewiczFind albums by this artist, bassist Marian SiejkaFind albums by this artist and drummer Janusz StefanskiFind albums by this artist. This reissue adds two alternate takes as bonus tracks. The music is absolutely brilliant, from start to finish, incorporating early Progressive Rock and Fusion explorations, soaked in the sublime sound of the Hammond organ – somewhere between Procol HarumFind albums by this artist and Jimmy SmithFind albums by this artist. Figiel´s original composition are grandiose, wonderfully melodic and full of sublime lyricism, and his treatment of the Chopin piece puts most of the countless attempts by Polish Jazz musicians to something similar completely to shame. This is undoubtedly one of the greatest Polish Jazz / Fusion hidden gems and GADFind albums on this label Records deserves the gratitude of all Polish Jazz fans for bringing it back to life. It is had to believe that music recorded five decades ago can be so up to date and fresh, completely timeless and aesthetically perfect. Hearing is believing in this case… Of all the wonderful reissues on GAD Records this is definitely one of my all time favorites!

MATTHEW FISHER ~ MATTHEW FISHER / STRANGE DAYS ANGEL AIR 510 (Barcode: 5055011705104) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1980 - 1981 Released: 2018 This is a reissue / remaster of the third and fourth albums by the British keyboardist / songwriter Matthew FisherFind albums by this artist, primarily known as one of the founders of the legendary British band Procol HarumFind albums by this artist and co-composer of one of the most iconic Rock songs of all time “A Whiter Shade Of Pale”. The first album, recorded in 1980, is still very close in its concept to the classic Procol Harum sound and style, with beautiful ballads and intricate instrumental arrangements. Fisher’s ability to weave wonderful melodies is fully intact and although the material is more Rock / Pop oriented than the Prog attitude, which was dominant in the earlier work, it is still great Classic Rock material. Fisher wrote all the ten songs himself. The second album, recorded just a year later, is somewhat more New Wave oriented, with a less elaborate instrumental support, but still remains as an excellent collection of songs, which sound great despite the time that passed since. Fisher co-wrote all but two of the ten songs with the ex-ZombiesFind albums by this artist bassist / vocalist Chris WhiteFind albums by this artist. Overall, this is a nice reminder of the many talents that flooded the British Rock scene in its formative years, following their fate and work in later days. Perhaps not essential material, but definitely worthy being revisited with a nostalgic tear in the eye corner. They don’t write songs like that anymore!

The group consisted of vocalist Brian KeithFind albums by this artist, organist Paul RaymondFind albums by this artist, guitarist Mick GrabhamFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Mick GrahamFind albums by this artist), bassist Nigel OlssonFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony MurrayFind albums by this artist. After the band fell apart in 1969, the band members moved on to play in many different groups, most notably Grabham who later joined Procol HarumFind albums by this artist. This remastered material offers 3 CDs full of great music. The first CD presents the mono version of the band´s debut album "Two Sides Of A PennyFind albums with this title" and six bonus tracks taken from singles. The second CD presents the stereo version of the debut album and fourteen bonus tracks all taken from BBC radio sessions. The third CD offers the band´s second album "CurrencyFind albums with this title" and seven bonus tracks, six of which are singles and one is an outtake from the album. The music is a fascinating journey into the British music scene in the late 1960s, and follows the transformation of the group from a Pop outfit into a tight unit playing Psychedelic Rock and early Prog Rock, which sounds absolutely sensational fifty years later. The group members wrote most of the material by themselves, with a few exceptions, and it lost nothing of its charm over the years, sounding infinitely better that anything passing for music these days. The later material is especially interesting in view of the fact that Plastic Penny are almost completely forgotten today, but their second album is a shining beacon of early Prog Rock, which is never mentioned anywhere. It is absolutely great to have this material available and back in circulation, as it is both of excellent quality and great historical value. It is of course warmly recommended to all early British Prog lovers, especially those who never ever heard about Plastic Penny in their lives – you are in for quite a shock!

The musical direction of this album is slightly more diverse than the two previous albums, adding some Pop / Rock oriented material, although the double keyboards dominating sound is still in place and the bombastic Blues based, Gothic and Psychedelic soundscapes are present again, making it clear that this is Procol Harum at its best. In retrospect this album shows that the group was in a constant state of searching, as all great Artists are. This album was to be the last of the trilogy of the epic first three albums by the group recorded in the 1960s which started with the formative "A Whiter Shade Of Pale". The album still sounds great after all those years, and is a refreshing experience for people who have not listened to it for a while. It seems that most of Rock had to say was more or less already articulated by the end of the 1960s. To the many fans of the group this is of course a must have item in their collections. An evergreen by all means and en essential Classic Rock / early Prog milestone!

The songwriting is still very strong and these tracks lost nothing of their charm and power over the years. In retrospect this album is a second part of the bridge between the epic first three albums by the group and the rest of their 1970s recordings, which moved beyond the initial concept, which started with the formative "A Whiter Shade Of Pale". The album still sounds great after all those years, and is a refreshing experience for people who have not listened to it for a while. It seems that everything that Rock had to say was more or less already articulated by early 1970s. To the many fans of the group this is of course a must have item in their collections. An evergreen by all means! The live tracks prove that Procol Harum was always a formidable live act and their ability to adopt new players into their lineup as rapidly as they did is still remarkable. Overall this is a brilliant piece of Rock history, which deserves an honorable place in any serious Rock music collection.

Brooker´s incredible vocals and the group´s instrumental work are superb in every respect and the production manages to emphasize perfectly their unique ambience. They were also incredibly effective when playing live, as evident on the two bonus CDs. Overall this is one of the strongest albums in the Procol Harum impressive legacy, which offers a wonderful example of their unique stylistic idiosyncrasy, which knows no parallels. It lost absolute nothing of its power and elegance over time and sounds every bit as wonderful as it did at the time of its release. It is obviously an essential item in any serious Classic Rock / Prog collection.

This remastered and expanded edition adds a CD with eleven bonus tracks; demos, alternate takes and alternate mixes and two tracks from a BBC session, those being the only two tracks that are previously unreleased. The musical direction of this album is somewhat different from the three previous albums, being decidedly more Rock oriented, although the double keyboards dominating sound is still in place. The songs are shorter and more concise, featuring more guitar riffs and up-tempo songs, with shorter instrumental passages, flirting with early Hard Rock. In retrospect this album is a bridge between the epic first three albums by the group and the rest of their 1970s recordings, which moved beyond the initial concept, which started with the formative "A Whiter Shade Of Pale". The album still sounds great after all those years, and is a refreshing experience for people who have not listened to it for a while. It seems that everything that Rock had to say was more or less already articulated by 1970. To the many fans of the group this is of course a must have item in their collections. This DVD documents the final concert of the tour upon the band’s return to UK. The unusual setting for the concert – a church – adds a dramatic background to this spectacular event and makes this DVD even more spectacular and theatrical than expected. Brooker manages to balance the group´s parts and the orchestral / choral parts into a non-conflicting tapestry of sound, which achieves a striking result. It is quite difficult to imagine today (2019) how pioneering and forward thinking this album really was at the time, when idioms like cross-genre / multi-cultural / multilateral were not even invented. The music was neatly sub-divided into serious (i.e. Classical Music) and popular (i.e. Pop / Rock) with Jazz being a strange fruit and World Music still being largely undiscovered. Any attempts to create something which defied these "norms" were usually met with suspicion and often outright animosity. But of course these were also the years of great musical discovery (The Golden Decade 1965-1975), as this wonderful album proves. Overall this is definitely an absolutely essential piece of Rock history and a must in any decent record collection, which any true music connoisseur should be proud to own. A timeless gem!

Brown´s lyrics are perhaps less ominous and mysterious, but they are full of his whimsical metaphors and dry British humor, which is all for the best. The songs vary in their intensity and expressiveness, but the best of them are certainly up to par with the great legacy of Procol Harum at its best. Overall it is mostly "more of the same", which in the case of a band like Procol Harum is quite a compliment. I had a great fun listening to these songs and the idea that someone is still able to write music like this is a lifesaver. Not everything has to change in time, and for Classic Rock fans staying in the past means staying alive. Wholeheartedly recommended!

Brooker´s incredible vocals and the group´s instrumental work are superb in every respect and the group was also incredibly effective when playing live, as evident on the bonus CD. The initial reception to the album was very cold and the album did not chart on either side of the pond, which of course had nothing to do with the quality of the music, but with the changing musical atmosphere and the Punk revolt against anything reasonably musical. Overall this is another strong album in the Procol Harum impressive legacy, which offers a wonderful example of their unique stylistic idiosyncrasy, which knows no parallels. It lost absolute nothing of its power and elegance over time and sounds every bit as wonderful as it did at the time of its release. It is obviously an essential item in any serious Classic Rock / Prog collection.

Musically the album does not follow closely the classic Procol Harum sound and musical direction and in retrospect is the groups most straightforward Pop / Rock oriented album in their entire career. In spite of the double keyboards (piano and Hammond organ) the production shifts the overall soundscape into more contemporary (at the time) environment, which sadly damages the result. The basic melodies and the lyrics are still potentially great, but the album does not reach the same level of depth and the characteristic Procol Harum ambience, as one would have hoped for. As the A/M live album proves, the material was much better suited for concerts than for an intimate home listening experience. Nevertheless it is still a solid Classic Rock album, which can be enjoyed by the many fans of the group and an important document of the group´s illustrious musical legacy.

It is separated by twelve years from the group´s previous studio album "The Prodigal StrangerFind albums with this title". Although only two founding members of Procol Harum are still present on this album: vocalist / pianist Gary BrookerFind albums by this artist and Hammond organ player Matthew FisherFind albums by this artist, the sound and the musical style of the group remain pretty stable over time. The piano / Hammond organ double keyboards dominated sound, which has been the group´s trademark over time, is here and so are Brooker´s unique dramatic vocals. The group´s other members are guitarist Geoff WhitehornFind albums by this artist, bassist Matt PeggFind albums by this artist and drummer Mark BrzezickiFind albums by this artist. The album offers twelve new songs, almost all composed by Brooker except for a couple of Fisher´s contributions, and one instrumental piece by Fisher. The lyrics are as usual by the poet Keith ReidFind albums by this artist. Musically the album does not break any new ground, but it stays, as already mentioned above, faithful to the band´s tradition to produce highly melodic lyrical and even melancholic songs, which often amalgamate elements of British Folk and some Classical Music influences. It is perhaps more Rock oriented than earlier releases, but not dramatically so. Reid´s lyrics are, as usual, full of meaningful statements, moral and social observations and other characteristics of his writing, which are in complete contrast to contemporary monosyllable dominated monstrosities that pass for lyrics. The songs vary in their intensity and expressiveness, but the best of them are certainly up to par with the great legacy of Procol Harum at its best. Overall it is mostly "more of the same", which in the case of a band like Procol Harum is quite a compliment. The group extensive touring and their ability to produce new material gained them a solid following and fan base among the next generation of music lovers, that did not grown up in the glow of their early stardom, which can only be said about very few other Classic Rock groups out there. Wholeheartedly recommended!

Grosvenor played some fantastic guitar licks and the rhythm section was second to none with Ridley´s heavy but virtuosic pulsations and Kellie´s spectacular pyrotechnics. Although slightly patchy stylistically, since the band was still searching for its own unique approach, the variety of styles works well here and adds to the album´s appeal. This is definitely one of the strongest debut albums of Classic Rock and a diamond in any serious record collection. Essential listening experience!

With the inclusion of that album this Box Set would have become "The Complete Robin Trower Chrysalis Recordings", which beyond any doubt almost all people who bought this Box Set would have preferred! The live album was already released as part of the budget "Original Album SeriesFind albums with this title" series (two volumes), which in turn left out "Back It Up". So the fans and collectors got screwed for the second time! There is no limit to stupidity and meanness!

The original album was recorded shortly after Trower left the iconic Procol HarumFind albums by this artist, and was produced by Procol Harum keyboardist Matthew FisherFind albums by this artist. CD1 presents the original album with nine tracks. CD2 presents eight tracks, one of which is a single B-side, three are alternate mixes and four are live BBC recordings. Most of the songs were co-written by Trower and Dewar. All the tracks were newly remastered. Departing from Procol Harum unleashed the strong Blues affinity in Trower’s music, which would be his most significant musical influence, and which would dominate his solo career, which continues to this very day with dozens of highly successful recordings as a solo artist. His incredible guitar playing would become his trademark and mark him as one of the greatest British Blues-Rock guitarist in all time. Overall, this a nice reminder of this classic album released originally fifty years earlier, with some additional new material, which should make all Trower fans happy. More 50th Anniversary reissues are imminent.
