CHRIS FARLOWE ~ FARLOWE THAT!
MIG 00852 (Barcode: 885513008527) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock

Recorded: 2003 Released: 2013

This is a reissue of a great album by British Blues-Rock vocalist Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist, recorded with a superb band comprising of guitarist Norman BeakerFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Dave BaldwinFind albums by this artist, bassist John PriceFind albums by this artist and drummer Paul BurgesFind albums by this artist (same as this album´s predecessor "Glory BoundFind albums with this title"). A brass section and guest musicians are also present, including the great guitarist Miller AndersonFind albums by this artist and the legendary singer / songwriter Van MorrisonFind albums by this artist, who contributed one of his songs on his album and sings on it with Farlowe. The original album includes fourteen songs and this edition adds two bonus tracks to the original album.

The music on this album marks a significant return to more Blues-Rock oriented material, contrary to the dominant Rhythm And Blues / Soul orientation of the two preceding albums. Farlowe´s voice is as strong and expressive as always and the passing of time seems completely unnoticed. His performances are full of vigor, power and the usual heartfelt honesty and emotion.

This is another proud addition to the flawless recorded legacy created by Farlowe over the years. Obviously this is a must to all Farlowe fans and an opportunity to grab a copy of this in case you don’t have the original album. They don´t make much music like that any more so if you like your Blues-Rock sounding like it did once, this is definitely it!

GIDI GOV ~ MOON DANCE
HED ARZI 64343 (Barcode: 7293372434396) ~ ISRAEL ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2003 Released: 2003

6th album. With a career stretching over more than thirty years Gidi GovFind albums by this artist is today a mythical figure on the local Israeli music scene. Since his early days as the lead singer of the legendary group KaveretFind albums by this artist and up to date he maintained an unprecedented and uncompromising standard of musical excellence, refusing to participate in any sort of trendy escapades. His unique and very personal way of singing can be compared to the great American and European performers like Frank SinatraFind albums by this artist, Tom WaitsFind albums by this artist, Van MorrisonFind albums by this artist and many others, all of whom posses not only a remarkable voice but also a deep understanding of music and a high level of emotional involvement with it. Although Gov usually performs material written specifically for him (in most cases by his friends Yoni RechterFind albums by this artist and Eli MoharFind albums by this artist), for this special project he collected a string of classic international vocal standards (and some Israeli evergreens from his past), which were beautifully translated into Hebrew by Eli Mohar and exquisitely arranged by Adi RenertFind albums by this artist (one of Israel’s great jazz musicians and arrangers). The ensemble accompanying Gov includes the creme de la creme of the Israeli jazz players and the entire album is beautifully recorded and produced (IMO this is the best ever production in this country). The choice of material might have easily resulted in some tackiness, but Gov’s incredible talent to interpret tacky material (like Armstrong’s “It’s A Wonderful World”) with enough twist to make it interesting works like a charm. His interpretation of Van Morrison’s “Moondance” is simply divine and the rest of the material is equally excellent. Age seems to be smiling upon Gov as the experience and seasoning turned him into a world-class performer by any standard. I absolutely adore every minute of this great album and urge everybody with sensitive ears to give it a try.

VAN MORRISON ~ ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE
EXILE 044003369580 (Barcode: 044003369580) ~ IRELAND ~ Pop & Rock

Recorded: 2023 Released: 2023

This is the 45th studio album by the legendary Northern Irish singer / songwriter Van MorrisonFind albums by this artist. The album presents nineteen tracks, all of which are Morrison’s take on Rock And Roll, Rhythm And Blues and Country songs, written by others, similar to his previous album dedicated to Skiffle. He is accompanied by a team of excellent instrumentalists, who played on his latest recordings, which includes organist Richard DunnFind albums by this artist, pianist Stuart McIlroyFind albums by this artist, guitarist Dave KearyFind albums by this artist, bassist Pete HurleyFind albums by this artist, drummer Colin GriffinFind albums by this artist and a few other players and background vocalists.

Despite his age (78 years young) Morrison is in great condition, full of vigor and creative powers and his vocal abilities are absolutely unblemished. This is the second time he returns to the music that fascinated him in his early days, and he does so with obvious love and affection. His arrangements and in some cases expansions of the original material are all tasteful and faithful to the original style, and as such work out splendidly.

It is very difficult to find today an Artists, who is able to maintain a career for six decades, without losing any of its momentum, quality or good taste and Morrison surely deserves our appreciation for keeping the flame burning. His ability to cross genres at will, always remaining relevant, is absolutely precious.

Overall, this is another great album by a great Artists, who manages to remain relevant and creative as the time passes by. Morrison pushes aside all fads and fashions and remains true only to himself, doing what he does best, i.e. singing his heart out. Regardless if you like early Rock at all, this music is both entertaining and valuable, in complete contrast to everything happening around. Well done, indeed!

VAN MORRISON ~ ASTRAL WEEKS (EXPANDED EDITION)
WARNER BROS. 081227952310 (Barcode: 081227952310) ~ IRELAND ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2015

This is the remastered and expanded reissue of the iconic debut (see Side Note below) album by the celebrated Northern Irish singer / songwriter Van MorrisonFind albums by this artist. Recorded in a relaxed atmosphere and accompanied by a bunch of superb Jazz musicians: bassist Richard DavisFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jay BerlinerFind albums by this artist, percussionist / vibraphonist Warren Smith, Jr.Find albums by this artist, drummer Connie KeyFind albums by this artist and flautist / saxophonist John PayneFind albums by this artist, Morrison delivers his heartbreaking vocals full of poetic imaginary, becoming an instant superstar. Although the album did not chart and produced no singles, in time it became one of the most revered singer / songwriter albums of all times.

The album includes a couple of older songs Morrison wrote earlier on and recorded demos of (see Side Note again), but most of the material was fresh and of course absolutely brilliant. The albums producer Lewis MerensteinFind albums by this artist later added orchestral arrangements by Larry FallonFind albums by this artist, but did not hurt the intimate atmosphere of the studio dates. The approach, that utilizes brass and a Jazzy rhythm section, which is present here, will in time become Morrison´s trademark, and which will continue for decades. Morrison´s vocal performances are, as usual, completely unique and incomparable to any other vocalist active at the time or since.

Morrison stunned the music word with his unique combination of musical and poetic qualities, which happens only very rarely. Similarly to Bob Dylan, he always has a message and the massage was delivered on the wings of beautiful, moving and sophisticated musical chariot.

The remastered sound and the bonus tracks are a very good reason to make this album a part of everybody´s music collection, as usual better late than never. Do not hesitate!

Side Note: Following his departure from the celebrated ThemFind albums by this artist group, Morrison´s first musical outfit, in 1966 he moved to New York and signed with BangFind albums on this label Records, prompted by his manager and co-owner of the label. Morrison recorded eight song demos for the label, one of which called "Brown Eyed Girl" became a hit single. Consequently the label released all the songs as an LP album in 1967, in complete violation of the contract with Morrison and without his knowledge. The album, called "Blowin` Your Mind!Find albums with this title" is often counted as Morrison´s debut album, although he always completely disassociated himself from it. Here you have another pathetic story about the "Music Industry".

Musically the album offers a certain return to Blues and Rhythm And Blues, but, as usual, it is a mixture of cross-genre songs, all blessed by Morrison’s outstanding ability to weave beautiful melodies and write heartfelt lyrics, like only a few others. There is also a slight jazz touch in the background, which characterizes everything Morrison recorded.

Overall, this is a piece of music that is worth being remembered, and although Morrison’s recorded legacy offers a few dozen releases, he never recorded a bad album and everything he ever put out is worth an honorable place in a decent record collection. Morrison’s brilliant melody lines and intelligent lyrics are a beacon of good taste and musical aesthetics, which remain consistent and unmatched since decades, and although his popularity wavers over time, his true qualities never do.

VAN MORRISON ~ HIS BAND AND THE STREET CHOIR (EXPANDED EDITION)
WARNER BROS. 081227952303 (Barcode: 081227952303) ~ IRELAND ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2015

This is the remastered and expanded reissue of the third album by the celebrated Northern Irish singer / songwriter Van MorrisonFind albums by this artist. Following his iconic debut "Astral WeeksFind albums with this title" and its follow up "MoondanceFind albums with this title" Morrison recorded this album in a much more relaxed atmosphere, keeping the mood and instrumentation of "Moondance" intact, but easing up on the intensity.

The album collects a few older songs Morrison wrote earlier on and others, which were newer but were not included on the first two albums. The Jazzy arrangements utilizing brass and a Funky rhythm section are already his trademarks, which will continue for decades. Morrison´s vocal performances are, as usual, completely unique and incomparable to any other vocalist active at the time or since.

Of course it’s the strengths of the material that makes every album by Morrison, this one included, an instant classic. His somewhat throaty delivery and his modulations create a one of its kind sonic experience, which is absolutely mesmerizing and his melodies and lyrics are all a class of their own.

In retrospect this album is somewhat forgotten and neglected in the overall sizeable and incredibly rich Morrison´s legacy, which is a pity, as it is a charming gem of an album with so much great music within it. Hopefully this new edition will remedy the neglect and return it to its proper and well earned status.

The remastered sound and the bonus tracks are a very good reason to make this album a part of everybody´s music collection, as usual better late than never. Do not hesitate!

VAN MORRISON ~ KEEP ME SINGING
EXILE 602557035742 (Barcode: 602557035742) ~ IRELAND ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016

It is absolutely wonderful to feel that some sanity is left in this world and this new (as of the time of writing) album by the iconic Northern Irish bard Van MorrisonFind albums by this artist proves that the good old values are still very much intact. The album, his 36th studio release, presents twelve new songs and one instrumental piece, eleven of which were written by Morrison, one which was co-written by him and one which is his interpretation of a beautiful classic song by Alfred BraggsFind albums by this artist. Morrison is accompanied by a set of superb musicians, including Irish pianist Fiachra TrenchFind albums by this artist, who also wrote the string arrangements which appear on some songs, multi-instrumentalist Paul MoranFind albums by this artist, guitarist Dave KearyFind albums by this artist, bassist Paul MooreFind albums by this artist and others.

The music is everything one might expect from Morrison: a set of sublime songs, delivered with great sensitivity and taste, with Morrison still being in top form and singing as if the clock did not tick for him at all. There is the same deep melancholy, echoes of Blues and Celtic roots, gentle Jazzy accompaniment, in short the same golden formula that Morrison uses for years and which still delivers the goods. In many ways this album is a nostalgic trip to the early era of his career, as stylistically it is very much a closing of a circle.

Morrison has always been completely free of the mannerisms that destroyed so many musicians over time. He never tried to prove anything and was always himself, not trying to be anybody else. With fads and fashions swapping the entertainment world, Morrison was always an observer rather than a player, distancing himself by choice for the phony imagery surrounding the scene.

It is somewhat sad to think that saying someone did not change almost at all in the last fifty years it the biggest compliment one can pay that person. Listing to this album brings fond memories of "Astral WeeksFind albums with this title", "MoondanceFind albums with this title" and "His Band And The Street ChoirFind albums with this title", with these iconic albums sharing many of the same elements with this album. Fame and success, all well deserved, did not, thank God, take a heavy toll on Morrison, and we, the fans, have all the reasons to feel ecstatically happy about it.

If you are a member of the Generation Z, it is probably way too late for you to save your sanity, but this album might just about do it…We the Baby Boomers were simply born into it, which makes thing really easy. Life ain´t fair…

VAN MORRISON ~ LATEST RECORD PROJECT VOLUME 1
EXILE 4050538667905 (Barcode: 4050538667905) ~ IRELAND ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 2020 Released: 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic paralyzed the music world almost completely for months on end, surely as far as live performances are concerned, but for many artists the period of seclusion and distancing was an opportunity for more intensive recording activity than ever before. Northern Irish iconic singer / songwriter Van MorrisonFind albums by this artist managed during the pandemic to record a whole 2CD album, his 42nd studio release, with no less than twenty-eight new songs, all written (two co-written and one traditional) by him, a truly remarkable achievement for a 75 years old veteran.

Morrison is surrounded by a fabulous team of instrumentalists, which includes organist Richard DunnFind albums by this artist, pianist Stuart McIlroyFind albums by this artist, guitarist Dave KearyFind albums by this artist, bassist Pete HurleyFind albums by this artist, drummer Colin GriffinFind albums by this artist and a few other players and background vocalist. Guitarist Jim MullenFind albums by this artist guests on a couple of songs and vocalists Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist and P.J. ProbyFind albums by this artist guests on one song each.

The music is kept in a retro atmosphere, emphasized by the organ centered instrumental arrangements, all kept in the vein of a classic early Morrison, combining Blues, Country, Soul and Rhythm And Blues, but always completely filled with Morrison’s idiosyncrasy. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it is the name of the game here, and Morrison was always a Master of the game.

Since personally I could never get enough of Morrison’s brilliant songwriting and superb delivery, this album surely is not going to break the pattern. I had a blast listening to these songs, and although there were no surprises within, we all had enough surprises in our lives lately, so Van, please don’t you ever change!

God bless for being out there and for keeping the music same!

VAN MORRISON ~ LIVE AT ORANGEFIELD: BE JUST AND FEAR NOT
ORANGEFIELD 5061030860472 (Barcode: 5061030860472) ~ IRELAND ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2024

This is an archival live album by legendary Northern Irish singer / songwriter Van MorrisonFind albums by this artist, recorded in 2014 during his performance at his alma mater Orangefield Secondary School in Belfast, Northern Ireland, just before it was about to close its doors, fifty-five years after he performed there for the first time in 1959. The album presents sixteen tracks, all but two original songs by Morrison. The sound quality of the live recording is brilliant and Morrison and his band are in absolute top form.

Morrison performs some of his favorite songs he wrote over the years, and considering the quality and quantity of the material he managed to accumulate, it is no wonder that the music is absolutely delightful and moving, as obviously the concert could be seen as a retrospective journey, which touches all his admirers, even if these songs were already performed many times. He is simply unbeatable as far as writing great songs and singing them, which go directly to the heart.

Overall, this is an obvious must have for all Morrison fans the world over, especially since this album offers a wonderful flow and festive atmosphere, which can be felt for the entire duration. If you love Morrison, there is no need to think twice as it does not get any better. This album was released on a new record label owned by Morrison, called OrangefieldFind albums on this label Records, which is not widely distributed and can be a bit more difficult to find, so buying directly from the label seems to be the best option. Enjoy!

EXILE 044003379664 (Barcode: 044003379664) ~ IRELAND ~ Jazz-Pop Fusion

Recorded: 2014 - 2019 Released: 2024

This is the 46th studio album by the legendary Northern Irish singer / songwriter Van MorrisonFind albums by this artist. The album presents fifteen tracks, which are a selected from the vault of previously unreleased recordings, and others were newly re-arranged for a Big Band sound. The album emphasizes more explicitly than usual Morrison’s affinity to Jazz and the material is all carefully selected and offers the usual level of excellence, which he never ceases to deliver. Despite his advanced age, Morrison is still in great shape and hopefully will still continue to record new material. Although this album offers archival material, it is still a great piece of music, which for his many fans, myself included, delivers in full.

Overall, this is a collection of material from the vault, but the usual level of excellence is absolutely still here and it is a great pleasure to be able to listen to this music. Although the album was savagely criticized by “music critics”, for me it as good as anything Morrison released before. Keep it coming!

This reissue adds two bonus tracks: one alternate take and one previously unreleased song. This was the 5th album Morrison released in the 1980s.

Musically the album offers Morrison’s usual mix of Celtic, Blues, Folk, Gospel and Jazz influences. In some respects, this album returns to the early days of his career, with the songs being mostly lyrical, but he delivers, as usual, a mixture of cross-genre songs, all blessed by his outstanding ability to weave beautiful melodies and write heartfelt lyrics, like only a few others Artists are able to do.

Overall, this is a piece of music that is worth being remembered, and although Morrison’s recorded legacy offers a few dozen releases, he never recorded a bad album and everything he ever put out is worth an honorable place in a decent record collection. It is one of those Artists you can never have too much of…

VAN MORRISON ~ WHAT`S IT GONNA TAKE?
EXILE 602445497775 (Barcode: 602445497775) ~ IRELAND ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 2022 Released: 2022

This is the 43rd studio album by Northern Irish singer / songwriter Van MorrisonFind albums by this artist. The album present fifteen new original songs, all written by Morrison.

The clock seems to stand still for Morrison, as his creative powers and vocal abilities are definitely unaffected by his age (almost seventy-seven), enabling him to continue his career uninterrupted, now in its seventh decade. His music and lyrics remain completely relevant today and his wonderful amalgam of Blues, Gospel, Rock and Pop, with a dash of Jazz here and there, feels as great as it always did.

As usual, Morrison is surrounded by a well selected group of instrumentalists and backing singers, creating the familiar, organ soaked background, which suits his songs ideally, recreating the familiar experience again.

Overall, this is another great album by one of the last iconic figures in popular music, who left us an enormously rich recorded legacy, which should be reassured forever. There is no way not to love this music if one lived his previous albums, and of course this is a most welcome addition to his life’s work, which makes this world more bearable. Thanks for all those years of music!

VAN MORRISON ~ WHAT`S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?
BLUE NOTE 724359365121 (Barcode: 724359365121) ~ IRELAND ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 2002 Released: 2003

This is the 30th studio album in the vast and wonderful recorded legacy of the Northern Irish singer / songwriter Van MorrisonFind albums by this artist, which is still growing. I decided to go back and write about this album, as the COVID-19 days seem to be pushing hard for re-examination of one’s values and this is definitely one of my favorite Morrison’s albums, although I honestly love all of them. The reason is probably that this is definitely the album, which is closest to the Blues and Jazz side of Morrison, due to the superb Brass arrangements that dominate it. The album presents thirteen songs, ten of which are his originals, one is a traditional Jazz / Blues anthem arranged by Morrison, another a Blues standard to which he added some lyrics and one a British Jazz instrumental standard by veteran clarinetist Acker BilkFind albums by this artist (who plays on this track) with lyrics added by Morrison.

No less than sixteen musicians (and a string section on two tracks) accompany Morrison, five of which play the superb brass arrangements, with extensive soloing, which creates a distinct Bluesy / Jazzy aura, which together with Morrison’s idiosyncratic vocals is absolutely pure magic. The Rock / Blues side of the album is represented by the unreplaceable Hammond presence and guitar soloing, rounding up the overall setting.

It is nothing short of incredible to reflect upon the fact that over the years Morrison wrote hundreds of songs, with no “weak links” among them, a legacy only a very few Artists can claim. For over five decades now his songs were something one could always count on to bring nothing but joy and pleasure.

For Morrison fans, who might have missed this gem, try to find a copy as it is a true treasure. Highly recommended listening for people looking for some sanity in these crazy days…

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2006

Debut album by US keyboardist / vocalist Ben SidranFind albums by this artist, one of the greatest Jazz / Blues / Soul vocalists ever. Sidran originally worked in Rock (he was a member of the Steve Miller BandFind albums by this artist), but gradually moved away from Rock towards Jazz, where he made his real impact. He is a great keyboards player and his organ work is truly inspired. His warm voice is completely unique and he ranks among the top class vocalists like Tom WaitsFind albums by this artist and Van MorrisonFind albums by this artist. This album was recorded with many famous Rock and Jazz musicians and clearly sets the path for his future work. Considering the fact that it was unavailable for so many years, this is a most welcome reissue. Classic stuff!

THEM ~ THE COMPLETE THEM 1964-1967
SONY 888751505421 (Barcode: 888751505421) ~ IRELAND ~ Pop & Rock

Recorded: 1964 - 1967 Released: 2015

This compilation collects all the recordings by the Northern Irish group ThemFind albums by this artist, which owes its fame to the fact that it included the charismatic vocalist Van MorrisonFind albums by this artist as its lead singer and principal songwriter. Both LPs released by the group, all their singles, EPs and a plethora of demos, radio sessions and other rarities are included here, spread over 3 CDs, with the third CD consisting entirely of previously unreleased material. To be honest the title is a bit confusing and incorrect, since Them continued to record after Morrison left the group and their later output is quite interesting musically. But of course Them with Morrison at the helm are another story.

Musically Them were quite similar to other early Rock And Roll / Rhythm And Blues bands that swept the British Isles from the early 1960s on. They were perhaps a bit more Blues oriented than others, but basically the sound and melodic approach was pretty ordinary at the time. Of course Morrison´s songs had a catchy side to them and his unique vocals and delivery turned the group into a moderate success story both in Britain and across the pond.

The original songs written by Morrison, which are present herein, show his potential as a songwriter, which would fully blossom shortly after he moved on to start his solo career. The limited Pop format was not suitable for his complex poetic lyrics at the time, and only after the music went through Psychedelic Pop, Progressive Rock and the Summer of Love (mind you it all just took only a couple of years), the world was ready for the new poetic Van Morrison.

The lineup of the band went through countless changes and during the recording session many musicians from outside the group were used. In the liner notes Morrison talks about it at length and it shouldn´t surprise the more refined listeners to hear Jimmy PageFind albums by this artist on guitar from time to time.

Overall this collection is a superb historical document of the era and a must have item for Van Morrison fans. The remastered sound is excellent and the entire affair is a lovely trip down the memory line. Definitely worth investigating!
