  | BEACH BOYS ~ THE SMILE SESSIONS (DELUXE EDITION) CAPITOL 5099902766324 (Barcode: 5099902766324) ~ USA ~ Classic Pop Recorded: 1966 - 1967 Released: 2011
If any album in the history of recorded music deserves the “legendary” status, “SmileFind albums with this title” is certainly a worthy candidate. Devised as a follow up to the brilliant “Pet SoundsFind albums with this title” album by The Beach BoysFind albums by this artist and their resident genius / creative director Brian WilsonFind albums by this artist, it was supposed to be the Mother of all albums, the ultimate musical thrill and the decisive blow in the Beach Boys / BeatlesFind albums by this artist imaginary competition.
Wilson devised the idea and technique for what was supposed to become the “Smile” album when he started to record to famous “Good Vibrations” single, while still working on “Pet Sounds”. From the summer of 1966 and months into 1967 Wilson recorded hours upon hours of material, which was to be later edited into finished songs using elaborate studio wizardry, splicing, overdubbing and any previously known trick in the book, and then some. Unfortunately Wilson became increasingly erratic and disturbed as the work progressed, fighting with his own demons, fears and drug abuse, which eventually led to abandoning the project / album completely.
Luckily for us, music lovers, the session tapes of the “Smile” project were saved, some of them circulating in the bootleg circles for many years. Jump forward to 2004, when the rejuvenated Wilson, in much better mental state and drug free decided to revisit the “Smile” concept and recorded a contemporary version of the “Smile” songs, a project, which was very well received both by critics and public alike. This led to Wilson’s work of reconstruction of the “Smile” album, using the original tapes, which was eventually released in late 2011 as “The Smile Sessions” in several versions: a normal 2CD version, a Deluxe 2CD Box Set (this one) and the lavish and extravagant Special Edition Deluxe Box Set with 5 CDs, 2 LPs and 2 singles.
So much for the history behind this album, and now let’s talk about the musical content; in retrospect it’s obvious that “Smile” was definitely a brilliant piece of music and a work of a visionary Artist. The completely innovative approach to creating music, at least as far as Pop was concerned, marks “Smile” as a prophetic and pioneering step forward. The question is, however, if now, almost five decades later, the music manages to retain its vitality, credibility and conceptual integrity? Regardless of what the subjective answer the above question is, one must admit that the music still sounds damn good, especially those sublime melody lines, vocal harmonies and layers upon layers of sound all falling into place like pieces of a complex puzzle.
The bonus material enables us a glimpse into the creative process of recording this music step-by-step, sound upon sound, which is still truly amazing. Perhaps this version of “Smile” is not as grand as it might have been if it was ever finished back then, but it is the best we’ll ever get, so let’s enjoy it. It is certainly worthy an honorable place in any serious record collection, as long as people still remember who the Beach Boys were. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | BRIAN WILSON ~ THAT LUCKY OLD SUN (LIMITED EDITION) CAPITOL 5099923414228 (Barcode: 5099923414228) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock
This is the seventh studio album by legendary American singer / pianist / songwriter Brian WilsonFind albums by this artist, recorded with a large group of musicians, including brass and string sections. Multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Scott BennettFind albums by this artist gets co-writing credits on most of the songs and Van Dyke ParksFind albums by this artist recites short narratives. The album presents seventeen tracks, four of which are narrations, dividing the rest of the tracks into five song cycles. The Limited Edition set adds a DVD with a documentary and live performances of two songs.
The music is everything one may expect from Wilson: brilliant melodies and exquisite vocal harmonies combined into the sunny California vibe, which makes this album the closest to Wilson’s Beach BoysFind albums by this artist sonic legacy.
This is perfect Pop / Rock music of its kind and Wilson remains a Master of the trade when it comes to composing and performing it. It is the 21st Century but the music remains completely valid and enjoyable despite the passing time. Whatever happened (or didn’t) in music in the meantime, a great melody and perfect harmonizing always works, at least for me.
Overall, as long as Wilson is able to produce such wonderful albums, I’ll be always happy to listen to them and enjoy them, being grateful for his talent. Every Beach Boys / Wilson follower should find this absolutely indispensable.

  | FRANK SINATRA ~ WATERTOWN (DELUXE EDITION) CAPITOL 602445380206 (Barcode: 602445380206) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Pop Fusion Recorded: 1970 Released: 2022
This is a new edition of the brilliant album by iconic American vocalist Frank SinatraFind albums by this artist, originally released in 1970. The album was a completely unique true “concept album” in Sinatra’s recording career, rather than a collection of unrelated songs. All the songs on this album were co-written by Bob GaudioFind albums by this artist and Jake HolmesFind albums by this artist and tell a life story of a man from a small American town. This new edition has a restored sound quality, eight bonus tracks and an extensive booklet, which background information about the concept, the story and the recording of this unique piece of music.
As usual with Sinatra’s albums, he is accompanied by an orchestra, which performs lush and often intricate instrumental parts, arranged by the best professionals on scene. This is the only Sinatra album, on which he added his vocals on top of pre-recorded orchestral parts. His usual modus operandi was recording live with the orchestra, but the complexity of the lyrics and the music in this case persuaded him to change the approach for just this one album.
Although at the time of its release the album was a complete commercial failure, being the worst selling Sinatra album in all time, in retrospect it is a true masterpiece, which was simply way ahead of its time. The idea of “concept albums” was just about starting to evolve in Pop and Rock, but again in retrospect, many Sinatra’s earlier albums pioneered this tendency already a decade earlier.
As for Sinatra’s performances, he is of course absolutely divine from start to finish. For me he always was the greatest American vocalist across the board, not only because of his technical abilities, but mainly due to his completely unique approach to the interpretation of the lyrics, where every word, or even syllable, has a meaning. The ideal amalgam of brain and heart that Sinatra was able to achieve remains to be unparalleled to this very day and his collected recording legacy is simply a colossal Cultural and Artistic treasure.
Overall, this is sadly a little know gem in Sinatra’s long and glorious career, which deserves a special attention and it is great to see it receiving this special treatment and being brought again on the market. It is, after all, a true treasure trove!
Side Note
Although not a Jazz album per se, everything Sinatra recorded swung, and if it got that swing…

  | BEACH BOYS ~ SAIL ON SAILOR - 1972 (SUPER DELUXE EDITION) CAPITOL 602445859146 (Barcode: 602445859146) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1972 - 1993 Released: 2022
This is another mammoth 6CD Box Set expanded reissue of albums recorded by the legendary American Rock group The Beach BoysFind albums by this artist. The material includes mostly music recorded in 1972, but some live recordings included here go as far as 1993. The vast majority of the material is previously unreleased. Here is more detailed information:
CD1 presents the album “Carl And The Passions – So ToughFind albums with this title” with eight original tracks and eight bonus tracks.
CD2 presents the album “HollandFind albums with this title” with nine original tracks and seven bonus tracks, as well as the six-part suite “Mount Vernon And Fairway (A Fairy Tale)”.
CD3 presents eleven tracks recorded live at the Carnegie Hall on November 23, 1972.
CD4 presents fifteen more tracks from the Carnegie Hall concert.
CD5 presents twenty-one tracks from various 1972 sessions.
CD6 presents twenty various tracks, including six live versions of the songs from the two albums recorded between 1973 and 1993 and other studio recordings.
Renowned for their sublime vocal harmonies and divine songwriting, mostly by Brian WilsonFind albums by this artist, The Beach Boys produced some of the finest American Rock music ever, which loses nothing of its power, beauty and Artistic vision over the time. They had few competitors at the time and of course the music shines brightly in comparison to the non-music that surrounds us today. Sadly, the material included here marks more or less the final stage of their illustrious career, although Brian Wilson still produces great music today.
Overall, this Box Set is an obvious labor of love and a treasure trove of sublime timeless music. Although such detailed recording documents are perhaps most interesting to true fans of the group (those who are still with us, like myself), they are also extremely educative, to show the new generations what great music is all about. Personally, I love every second of those 6 CDs, which bring fond memories of times long gone. Nostalgia? Perhaps, but surely also way beyond…

  | BEATLES ~ LIVE AT THE BBC – THE COLLECTION CAPITOL 602537584475 (Barcode: 602537584475) ~ UK ~ Pop & Rock Recorded: 1963 - 1966 Released: 2013
This Box Set includes some of the numerous recordings the BeatlesFind albums by this artist made for the BBC during their early days, mostly recorded in 1963 and 1964. The material includes songs as well as studio chatter (speech tracks) and interviews. The latest material, which comprises of four individual interviews, was taped in late 1965 and early 1966.
Most of the material included here was never previously released in any form and is of course invaluable to the hordes of Beatle-maniacs, who fifty years later seem to be as zealous to hear and own every piece Beatle-related material, as they were in real time.
In retrospect this material is a fabulous trip down the nostalgia lane, which should make even the most hardened cynics smile here and there. More importantly, however, it shows the Beatles "naked", as they really were without walls of production trickery, studio gadgetry and the omnipresent influence of George MartinFind albums by this artist, who made the Beatles albums into what they eventually became – gems of Pop history.
Live the Beatles were actually pretty embarrassing, which becomes apparent immediately when the music starts. Their instrumental skills are nonexistent; the guitar solos are awkward and primitive, and so on. The only thing that actually works on these recordings are of course the vocal parts and vocal harmonies, which are not bad, but than again myriads of other vocalists at the time were at least as good, many being infinitely better. And even those show false notes here and there, are off key and in wrong tempi; in short anything but perfection.
The material is not that great either; most of it consists of covers of rock classics by contemporary artists and the few self-penned hits are pretty nice, but not extraordinary. In short if anybody wanted a piece of solid evidence to prove that the Beatles were just a pretty "average" group, at least in the early days, needs to look no further.
On the other hand this is a monumental piece of Pop history and another peek at the seemingly endless source of musical material owned by the BBC. God bless the Queen and the BBC for being there and having enough storage capacity to keep it all for posterity.

  | BRIAN WILSON ~ NO PIER PRESSURE (DELUXE EDITION) CAPITOL 602547215239 (Barcode: 602547215239) ~ USA ~ Pop & Rock Recorded: 2014 Released: 2015
In 2012 The Beach BoysFind albums by this artist celebrated half a century of musical activity, but that does not seem to slow the band´s founder, leader and creative Genius Brian WilsonFind albums by this artist, who keeps a hectic schedule working on several new projects since. This album is a result of that activity, being his eleventh solo studio album. It comprises entirely of new original songs written by Wilson, which of course calls for a celebration. Several guest artists appear on this album, including Beach Boys cohorts Al JardineFind albums by this artist and David MarksFind albums by this artist, and several much younger artists. This Deluxe Edition adds five additional songs that do not appear on the standard edition.
Wilson proves again that he has very little competition as far as writing beautiful melodic songs and no competition whatsoever as far as singing vocal harmonies. This album is a celebration of melodic vocal music, which is simply perfect, and which lost absolutely nothing of its impact over time. Classic qualities are here to stay and Wilson is a Master of his trade, basically saying: here I am, listen and shut up, unless you can do better.
The album was severely criticized by quite a few "reviewers" in the American press, which simply means they know absolutely nothing about music values. True, some of the production techniques are perhaps somewhat commercial and one track is pretty bad, but honestly these songs are miles ahead of the infinite number of crappy songs offered by others on today´s shameless music market. The vocal parts are simply brilliant, with absolutely no competition anywhere in sight, which the critics simply miss completely.
Overall this is the good old Brian Wilson, with a slightly updated production coating, but keeping his basic qualities intact. Anybody who can appreciate a great vocal harmony and a superbly crafted tune will definitely love this album, as for the others, who cares…

  | JOHNNY WINTER ~ THE PROGRESSIVE BLUES EXPERIMENT CAPITOL 66568 (Barcode: 724386656827) ~ USA ~ Blues-Rock Recorded: 1967 Released: 2005

Although recorded in 1967, it was released only two years later, when Winter signed with ColumbiaFind albums on this label and released his sensational debut album on that label, in attempt to "catch a ride" on his fame. Nevertheless this is a superb recording by itself and presents Winter already at the top of his powers, playing here in a trio setting with bassist Tommy ShannonFind albums by this artist and drummer Red TurnerFind albums by this artist. There are only very few guitar players as good as Winter, when it comes to playing the Blues and mixing it with Rock, so this is simply a classic of the genre and an absolute must for every Blues-Rock fan.

  | JON LORD ~ BEYOND THE NOTES CAPITOL 874180 (Barcode: 724387418028) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 2004 Released: 2004
Brand new addition to the already legendary output by the veteran Rock hero Jon LordFind albums by this artist. Lord`s life-long flirt with classical music comes to front again, as it did in the series of classical oriented albums he recorded in the 70`s. The formula here is similar to some extent, the difference being in the choice of shorter (and much more coherent) pieces rather then extended suites. Lord, as composer and performer, uses all the tools at his disposal - superb musicians (including Thys Van LeerFind albums by this artist on flute!), string sessions and string ensembles, vocals, etc. For music lovers who have the classical inclination this is a true delight!

  | DUKE ELLINGTON / BENNY GOODMAN ~ POLISH RADIO JAZZ ARCHIVES VOL.17 POLSKIE RADIO 1667 (Barcode: 5907812246679) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1934 - 1949 Released: 2014
This is the seventeenth installment in the new series of releases initiated by the Polish Radio, which presents archive Jazz recordings. Radio recordings are always a fabulous source of remarkable material, and as far as Polish Jazz history is concerned, the Polish Radio, which was a state monopoly for 45 years, recorded over time a plethora of invaluable material, which apart from the albums released by the Polskie Nagrania record company (also a state monopoly), is the only available additional source of Polish Jazz recordings. For many years Polish Radio recorded concerts presented during Poland´s most important Jazz venues, including the annual Jazz Jamboree Festival and many other festivals as well.
This album presents music recorded by the Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist Orchestra and several different ensembles and orchestra led by Benny GoodmanFind albums by this artist, recorded in the 1930s and 1940s and released on various labels (HMVFind albums on this label, ColumbiaFind albums on this label, CapitolFind albums on this label and RCAFind albums on this label) on 78 RPM shellac discs, which are part of the Polish Radio archives. The music was remastered from these original discs by Anna RutkowskaFind albums by this artist.
I must admit that I find this release quite surprising and consider its place in this series as purely accidental, as none of these recordings present music recorded in Poland by the Polish Radio nor does it feature any Polish Jazz musicians, and as such defies the purpose of the so far excellent effort to make this series special. The fact that these shellacs are part of the Polish Radio archive is definitely not a good enough reason for being included in this series. And additionally of course all this material is already available in the US and in Europe, after being remastered by the labels which released this music originally, in my higher quality, often in lavish Box Sets with extensive historical notes, etc. In short this effort is nothing short of bizarre and a sad waste of resources, especially in view of the fact that many other superb recordings in the Polish Radio vaults are still waiting to be released.
One can only hope that future releases of this series will return to the already established pattern, which served its purpose splendidly.

  | MANHATTAN TRANSFER ~ ORIGINAL ALBUM SERIES RHINO 081227983697 (Barcode: 081227983697) ~ USA ~ Pop & Rock Recorded: 1975 - 2000 Released: 2009
This Box Set collects five (seemingly randomly selected) albums recorded by the American vocal quartet The Manhattan TransferFind albums by this artist and released on the AtlanticFind albums on this label Records label between 1975 and 2000. The group was founded in 1969 by vocalist Tim HauserFind albums by this artist, who was the quartet´s leader for many years until his death in 2014. They recorded their debut in 1971 for CapitolFind albums on this label Records, which made little impact, and their career took off after switching to Atlantic Records and releasing their second eponymous album, included here. By 1978 the quartet´s stable lineup, which lasted until Hauser´s death, was established and included Hauser, Alan PaulFind albums by this artist, Janis SiegelFind albums by this artist and Cheryl BentyneFind albums by this artist. Israeli pianist Yaron GershovskyFind albums by this artist serves as the quartet´s musical director since the late 1970s.
Although similar to the European vocal Jazz ensembles like the Les Double SixFind albums by this artist, The Swingle SingersFind albums by this artist or the Polish NOVIFind albums by this artist ensemble, which revolutionized the vocal Jazz scene in the late 1950s and 1960s, Manhattan Singers were much closer to the American vocal tradition, which includes Gospel and Soul, rather than Jazz. As a result their music was always closer to Pop than to Jazz, which is plainly evident by listening to the albums in this Box Set. Although they do use vocalese and some improvisation, their arrangements and performances are always polished and round, avoiding risks and exploration.
Nevertheless they do what they do highly professionally and always sound exactly as what is expected of them, which makes them very popular worldwide. Overall this Box Set includes very nice vocal music, which is very easy to be loved, but has almost nothing to do with Jazz per se. It is of course great fun to listen to, especially while your brain is comfortably numb… Side Note The "Original Album SeriesFind albums with this title" by Warner Bros.Find albums on this label, the "Original Album ClassicsFind albums with this title" by SonyFind albums on this label, the "5 Original AlbumsFind albums with this title" by UniversalFind albums on this label, the Box Sets by RhinoFind albums on this label and other similar releases are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour. Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases has been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard for the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires as to treat our Cultural Legacy with respect and loyalty.
The Box Sets produced under these monikers have no discographical information whatsoever about the lineups, musician names, composers, lyricists, dates and places of recording, original release data and even basic copyright data (the last is strictly illegal BTW). Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, they are often edited and information (which would be in most cases too small to be readable) is removed. Most importantly these Box Sets don't include any booklet offering a historical background and perspective about the Artists and the Music, which are extremely important and vital to the preservation of our Culture and passing the knowledge to the next generations.
In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap. Considering the fact how many times this music has been sold over and over again by the labels, this is a crying shame!

  | FRANK ZAPPA ~ LUMPY GRAVY ZAPPA 3836 (Barcode: 824302383629) ~ USA ~ Avant-Garde Classical Recorded: 1967 Released: 2012
This is a reissue / remaster of the 3rd album by iconic American guitarist / composer / bandleader / visionary Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, originally released in 1968. The album presents just two continuous long tracks comprising of short fragments edited together, all composed by Zappa, with all of the material recorded in the studio in 1967 or earlier. This album was the second installment of the “No Commercial Potential” project, which also included the albums “We`re Only In It For The MoneyFind albums with this title”, “Cruising With Ruben & The JetsFind albums with this title” and “Uncle MeatFind albums with this title”.
The album was the first Zappa’s solo project and he does not play on it, but rather conducts a large orchestra comprising of almost sixty musicians, which he called Abnuceals Amuukha Electric Symphony OrchestraFind albums by this artist, and which does not include any members of The Mothers Of InventionFind albums by this artist. The album was commissioned and initially released in 1967 by CapitolFind albums on this label Records, despite the fact that Zappa was under contract with VerveFind albums on this label Records, which of course resulted in immediate legal dispute, which led to the Capitol album being withdrawn and re-released by Verve almost a year later in 1968, after Zappa reedited and expanded the orchestral album, adding inserts of spoken word / dialogue and music recorded earlier.
The orchestral music was a two-part oratorio, somewhat resembling symphonic musique concrête, which Zappa was interested in, and therefore is the first album on which Zappa demonstrates his interest and passion for Classical Music and large orchestral compositions, which of course would reoccur throughout his career.
Zappa shows on this album that he is able to write music, which amalgamates anything between Avant-Garde Pop and Rock and contemporary orchestral Classical Music. He appears as the first “total musician” on the Pop / Rock scene, a status he was able to hold till the day he died. From day one his extravagant personality and brilliant intelligence marked him as an outsider, a fate shared by most geniuses.
Ironically, despite the album’s Avant-Garde nature, it was exceptionally well received at the time of its release and even charted on the album list. This could have only happened in the late 1960s, when the last evidence of Human intelligence was still present on earth.
Overall, although fifty-five years passed since this music was recorded, this album remains an absolute Classic in every respect, which stands proudly as an icon of superb music, which still shines brighter than almost anything else recorded since. Zappa’s genius, not only as a musician, but also as a visionary and a brilliant observer of the human condition and American folly and deceit, remain completely relevant and are even more actual today than ever. Side Note Frank Zappa created a vast recorded legacy during his lifetime, which is continuously being expanded using music recorded and stored in his extensive vault. The albums officially released and approved by Zappa are numbered sequentially in the "Official Release" series, from #001 to the last release so far #126. The albums between #001 to #062 were released during Zappa's lifetime and all the others were released posthumously. There are countless unofficial / bootleg releases on the market as well.
Zappa's catalogue was remastered for CD release twice: in 1995 for the RykodiscFind albums on this label releases and again in 2012 for the ZappaFind albums on this label Records / UniversalFind albums on this label releases. The Zappa / Universal program includes 60 releases, which cover the entire catalog released during his lifetime (62 releases, except #013 "200 Motels" and the three Box Sets #043, #046 and #049 called "The Old Masters vol.I / II / III"), and 6 posthumous releases (#064, #065, #067, #068, #093 and #094), which were also included.
