  | GRUPO UM ~ MARCHA SOBRE A CIDADE EDITIO PRINCEPS 01 ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion Recorded: 1977 - 1979 Released: 2002
This is the reissue of the debut album by legendary Brazilian Grupo UmFind albums by this artist, which was the pioneering Jazz-Rock-World Fusion ensemble in the country. The group was founded by musicians who played with legendary Brazilian figures like Hermeto PascoalFind albums by this artist and Egberto GismontiFind albums by this artist and consisted of brothers Lelo NazarioFind albums by this artist (keyboards) and Zé Eduardo NazarioFind albums by this artist (drums), bassist Zeca AssumpcaoFind albums by this artist, percussionist Carlinhos GoncalvesFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Mauro SeniseFind albums by this artist. This reissue presents the original album (six tracks) with two bonus tracks, one being an outtake and the other originating from the first attempt to record this album two years earlier, which features saxophonist Roberto SionFind albums by this artist. All the material is original and was composed by the ensemble members, mainly by the Nazario brothers.
Stylistically the album is close to the early Weather ReportFind albums by this artist albums, but with more emphasis on the Brazilian folkloristic accents and in many respects with more freedom and space. Of course this was almost a decade after the early Weather Report albums were recorded and the influence took its time to reach Brazil, but Grupo Um really showed they can do it as good if not better and with vengeance. Some of the free form passages on this album are among the best ever in this particular idiom and in retrospect leave many contemporary ensembles way behind.
Although it might sound pompous or over exaggerated, this album is an absolute classic of the Jazz-Rock-World Fusion idiom, with very few equals and in almost forty years since it was recorded there was hardly anything better recorded in this style than this album. It took me ten years to get a copy of this album (courtesy of Zé Eduardo) but it was more than worth the wait. It is an eye (ear) opener of a monumental scale and although it´s impossible to find, try to get it!

  | LELO NAZARIO ~ “SE…” EDITIO PRINCEPS 03 ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1987
3rd album by the superb Brazilian keyboards player Lelo NazarioFind albums by this artist, who ranks among the most distinguished Brazilian musicians of the new generation. Apart from his solo work he is also a member of Brazilian groups Grupo UmFind albums by this artist and Pau BrasilFind albums by this artist. With his older brother / drummer Zé Eduardo NazarioFind albums by this artist, he also leads the trio PercussônicaFind albums by this artist (see their fantastic album on this site). Lelo’s first “boss” was the legendary Brazilian musician Hermeto PascoalFind albums by this artist, when Lelo played, alongside his brother again, in his group in the 1970’s. He is not only an extraordinary virtuoso, but also a great composer with profound understanding of jazz and contemporary classical music. This album is a true landmark of modern music, mixing jazz, electronic sounds and contemporary classical motifs with some Brazilian folklore – an irresistible stream of musical ideas brilliantly performed. All the other players on this album are superbly accomplished with deep sensitivity for this music. This edition is a release of the original LP with bonus tracks recorded in the 1990’s. I can hardly think of an album I enjoyed more than this one in a long while. A must!

  | SOM NOSSO DE CADA DIA ~ A PROCURA DA ESSĘNCIA: AU VIVO 1975-1976 EDITIO PRINCEPS 04 (Barcode: 7898901556046) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1975 - 1976 Released: 2004
These live recordings are the only available document of the legendary Brazilian 1970s Prog / Fusion band Som Nosso De Cada DiaFind albums by this artist. Following the release of their debut album SnegsFind albums by this artist in 1974, the band embarked upon intensive touring and performances, but the lack of commercial success, lack of interest from record labels, etc. (the usual hardships of 1970s Prog artists) led to internal frictions and four years after the band was formed it disbanded and disappeared from the scene. The band recorded their 2nd legendary album AmazôniaFind albums by this artist in 1975, which was picked by CBSFind albums on this label Brazil, but released only two years as Som NossoFind albums with this title with intensive overdubs and remix, completely changing the original masterpiece into a commercial funk album. These live recordings present the group in its full glory playing their great material, including the full original version of the “Amazônia” suite. Most of the tracks are extensive instrumental improvisations, mostly over 10 minutes long and one over 17 minutes long, which show the virtuosity of the players. The double keyboards line and exceptional spacey lead guitar offer endless peaks of energy floating somewhere between early Pink FloydFind albums by this artist and Weather ReportFind albums by this artist. This is fantastic music and in spite of the technical flaws of the recording every fan of good music should be grateful this is available for us to enjoy. Most warmly recommended!

  | AKINETÓN RETARD ~ AKINETÓN AO VIVO EDITIO PRINCEPS 06 ~ CHILE ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 2004
4th album (recorded live in Chile and Brazil) by the exquisite Chilean band Akinetón RetardFind albums by this artist, which is probably the most eloquent South American representative of RIO, but taking the original RIO musical ideology far and out beyond any preconceived notions. The music is as “crazy” as it gets, incorporating the freedom and virtuosity of European RIO groups, traces of MagmaFind albums by this artist (including linguistic mambo-jumbo), free jazz and you name it – completely far out but so breathtakingly good and absorbing that you feel completely drenched after an attentive listening session. Definitely not recommended for the weak-hearted, but compulsory for the adventurous listener with wide musical horizons. The album presents music taken from the three studio albums the band recorded and adds new material heard here for the first time. As usual in a live recording, there is much more space for extended soloing, which of course is always welcome. Any attempt to describe this music any further would be completely useless – just grab this and have a time of your life!

  | PÉ ANTE PÉ ~ IMAGENS DO INCONSCIENTE / PÉ ANTE PÉ EDITIO PRINCEPS 07 (Barcode: 7898901556077) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion Recorded: 1980 - 1982 Released: 2005
This is a reissue of the only two albums recorded by the legendary Brazilian Jazz / Fusion group Pé Ante PéFind albums by this artist, originating from Sao Paulo. The eponymous debut album was recorded in an octet setting in 1980 and the sophomore release was recorded a couple of years later in a quintet setting. Together with bands like Divina IncrencaFind albums by this artist, Grupo UmFind albums by this artist, Pau BrasilFind albums by this artist and a few others they were the pioneers of the new instrumental music in their country. The core of the group consisted of pianist Homero LotitoFind albums by this artist, drummer Caito MarcondesFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Teco CardosoFind albums by this artist and guitarist Jarbas BarbosaFind albums by this artist, who play on both albums. All the music was original, composed by the members of the group, with Lotito contributing the majority of the compositions.
The music, as expected, offers a wonderful amalgam of beautiful melodies and typical Brazilian rhythmic patterns, which although well advanced and complex, sounds perfectly enjoyable throughout. All the musicians involved offer high proficiency and palpable dedication, often willing to explore less obvious territory.
Although Brazil was always a highly musical country, such advanced and unusual music was entirely novel and pioneering at the time, offering a glimpse of Jazz avant garde approach, which arrived in Brazil a couple of decades after it was explored in US and in Europe, quite similar to Progressive Rock, which also blossomed in South America about two decades after its hay days in Europe.
This music sound remarkably fresh and astute today, almost four decades after it was recorded, which of course means that it lost nothing of its original ingenuity and aesthetic values. Obviously it is a remarkable piece of Brazilian music history, but this reissue is also in extremely high demand by record collectors worldwide (not to mention the original LPs, which reach astronomical sums in the collectors´ circles).
Overall this is a true gem of Brazilian / South American Jazz / Fusion, which deserves an honorable place in any serious record collection. Highly recommended!

  | NENĘ ~ MINUANO / BUGRE EDITIO PRINCEPS 09 (Barcode: 7898901556091) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz Recorded: 1982 - 1985 Released: 2005
3rd and 1st albums (recorded 1985 & 1982) by Brazilian Master drummer, percussionist and pianist NenęFind albums by this artist, who is one of the icons of Brazilian Jazz. Nenę played for many years in groups led by Brazilian superstars Hermeto PascoalFind albums by this artist and Egberto GismontiFind albums by this artist, and later established himself on the international scene by participating in many recordings by some of the most important Jazz musicians around the world. This wonderful reissue brings back to light two of his solo albums, which were impossible to find for years. “MinuanoFind albums with this title” was recorded in France with several superb Brazilian musicians and French guests. It is considered as one of the best Brazilian Jazz albums and a masterpiece on its own right. “BurgeFind albums with this title” was recorded in Rio De Janeiro with the participation of the best Brazilian players at the time and is also exceptionally good. All Brazilian Jazz lovers will have a feast with this music, with the wonderful melodies, samba and bossa nova rhythmic intricacies and superb performances by the soloists, all this in addition to the excellent composition and arrangements all by Nenę. Brilliant!

  | LELO NAZARIO ~ AFRICASIAMERICA EDITIO PRINCEPS 10 (Barcode: 7898901556107) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006
5th album by Brazilian keyboards player Lelo NazarioFind albums by this artist, one of the pioneers of Brazilian jazz and fusion. As the album’s title suggests, Nazario combines rhythmic influences from a variety of ethnic sources into his jazz / fusion compositions, often creating polyrhythmic backgrounds for his beautiful compositions. The album follows the path set by Nazario’s previous album and although recorded eight years later, it is a natural follow up to the approach developed earlier. He is a superb instrumentalist and even more importantly an amazing composer, always full of surprises and able to create a wide range of emotions in his music. Surrounded and supported by the most talented players on the contemporary Brazilian jazz / fusion scene (Teco CardosoFind albums by this artist – flute and saxes, Felipe AvilaFind albums by this artist – guitar and others) Nazario manages to reach the highest levels of expression for his music. I particularly enjoyed his performances on the electric piano, which remind me fondly of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s glory days with Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist. This is a great example of how great jazz / fusion music is created outside of the commonly accepted path set mostly by US players. Most warmly recommended and an assured eye (ear) opener!

  | ARMAZÉM ABAPORU ~ PEDRA GRANDE EDITIO PRINCEPS 11 (Barcode: 7898901556114) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2001 - 2005 Released: 2007
1st album by the excellent Brazilian group Armazém AbaporuFind albums by this artist, which continues the work of distinguished Brazilian Masters Hermeto PascoalFind albums by this artist and Egberto GismontiFind albums by this artist. Their music is a wonderful amalgam of traditional Brazilian music with Jazz and Prog. All six members of the group are excellent instrumentalists and the compositions are truly outstanding - complex both rhythmically and melodically, yet enormously enjoyable. This is one of the cleverest Jazz and World Music combinations I’ve ever heard and repeated listening reveals new aspects of the music every time. This new edition includes their debut album recorded in 2001 (and released privately) and live material recorded in France during their 2005 tour. This is essential listening for anybody who wished to expand his or her musical education beyond the trivial and a truly intelligent music.

  | NIVALDO ORNELAS ~ Ŕ TARDE / VIAGEM ATRAVÉS DE UM SONHO EDITIO PRINCEPS 13 (Barcode: 7898901556138) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz Recorded: 1980 - 1983 Released: 2007
2nd and 3rd albums by the legendary Brazilian saxophonist Nivaldo OrnelasFind albums by this artist, who is one of the most prominent players on the local scene for many years. In the 1970s Ornelas was a member in the ensembles led by Brazilian Masters Hermeto PascoalFind albums by this artist and Egberto GismontiFind albums by this artist. He released the album Ŕ TardeFind albums with this title in France and later used some of the tracks on this album and more material to release the Brazilian version of the album called Viagem Através De Um SonhoFind albums with this title. Some 20 top Brazilian Jazz players take part in this recording and it is a true gem, with beautiful melodies and exceptional soloing. Ornelas wrote almost all the music on this album, which is firmly based in both Jazz and Brazilian music, with the flavors of coffee, Carnival, almost naked ladies and relaxed seashores, which come to mind immediately when listening to this sensuous music. To people familiar with Brazilian Jazz this is just another jewel in the crown, and people who enjoy good quality music should really discover this wonderful treasure.

  | DIVINA INCRENCA ~ DIVINA INCRENCA EDITIO PRINCEPS 14 (Barcode: 7898901556145) ~ BRAZIL ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1980 Released: 2007
This is a reissue of the only album recorded by pioneering Avant-Garde Brazilian Jazz trio Divina IncrencaFind albums by this artist, which comprised of multi-instrumentalist Felix WagnerFind albums by this artist, bassist Rodolfo StroeterFind albums by this artist and drummer Azael RodriguesFind albums by this artist. The album also features three guest musicians, who play on selected tracks: saxophonists Mauro SeniseFind albums by this artist and Roberto SionFind albums by this artist and flautist Claus PremeFind albums by this artist. In addition to the eight tracks included on the original LP album, this remastered edition also includes five previously unreleased outtakes from the original sessions and one live track. All the music is original and all was composed by the trio members.
Together with such early Brazilian Jazz ensembles like Grupo UmFind albums by this artist and Pé Ante PéFind albums by this artist, Divina Increnca basically shaped to Brazilian Jazz an Jazz-World Fusion scene for years to come, creating for the first time original Brazilian Jazz rather than Bossa Nova music, which was more associated with Brazilian Folklore and adapted to Jazz by musicians from outside of Brazil. Divina Increnca was clearly the most advanced of these ensembles as far as Avant-Garde and Free Jazz is concerned and most of this album can be described as belonging to the searching music, which puts the individual freedom at the centre, but maintains a strong ensemble mood and presents clearly coherent melodic motifs.
Dominated by Wagner´s excellent piano parts, the album presents all the trio members and their guest as excellent instrumentalist, who are clearly able to swing when needed and to develop freely improvised passages, which are inspired and interesting. Although Free Jazz reached Brazil about a decade after it exploded in the US and Europe, the Brazilian response to the challenge was formidable, even if only within a small sphere of musicians.
Albums like this are sacred pieces of music history, which deserve to be preserved and brought back to life. As far as Brazilian music is concerned, the small Editio PrincepsFind albums on this label label made a superb job of it and its releases are all worth their weight in gold!

  | RAIZ DE PEDRA ~ TRAJETÓRIA EDITIO PRINCEPS 15 (Barcode: 7898901556152) ~ BRAZIL ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1983 - 1987 Released: 2008
1st album by brilliant Brazilian group Raiz De PedraFind albums by this artist, which combines Prog, Jazz and Brazilian elements into a unique experience, rarely achieved by others, released now for the first time on CD. Influenced by a wide scope of music from King CrimsonFind albums by this artist to Jan GarbarekFind albums by this artist and of course Brazilian Masters like Egberto GismontiFind albums by this artist and Hermeto PascoalFind albums by this artist, their music could be compared to some of the experiments by European RIO groups, but overall they are just completely in their own world, which of course is great. All the band members are splendid instrumentalists but the reeds player Márcio TubinoFind albums by this artist is simply phenomenal. The original album is expanded here with one early (pre album) track and live material taken from their 2nd (recorded live) album "Ao VivoFind albums with this title", which is sadly out of print now. I can wholeheartedly recommend this album to any Prog / RIO/ Jazz-Rock fan, as they will surely not only enjoy it, but also discover a new world of music, which surely deserves to be heard.

  | IVO PERELMAN ~ THE COMPLETE IBEJI SESSIONS EDITIO PRINCEPS 16 (Barcode: 7898901556169) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz Recorded: 1994 - 1996 Released: 2008
This fantastic album collects together all the material recorded by Brazilian saxophonist Ivo PerelmanFind albums by this artist for the small independent US label IbejiFind albums on this label Records, which were released on two separate albums: “Soccer LandFind albums with this title” (1994) and “Tapeba SongsFind albums with this title” (1996), adding unreleased material and celebrating Perelman´s 20th anniversary as a recording artist. Perelman is one of Brazil´s top saxophonist, and one of relatively few Avant-Garde players, who continues the tradition of and incorporates influences from Albert AylerFind albums by this artist, Archie SheppFind albums by this artist and Peter BrötzmannFind albums by this artist, among others. He is a very prolific composer and player, releasing over 30 albums, mostly in the US, where he now resides, but this music was recorded when he was still in Brazil, with many other top Brazilian Jazz artists, including brothers Zé Eduardo NazarioFind albums by this artist (drums) and Lelo NazarioFind albums by this artist (keyboards), presenting a wonderful amalgam of Free Jazz with strong Brazilian influences. The power of Perelman´s expression and his virtuosity are rare and deserve a much wider attention than he actually gets, a fate shared by so many visionary artists. Any Free / Avant-Garde Jazz fan will definitely have a field day with this splendid album, just give it a chance!

  | GRUPO UM ~ A FLOR DE PLASTICO INCINERADA EDITIO PRINCEPS 18 (Barcode: 7898901556183) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion Recorded: 1982 Released: 2010
This is the reissue of the third and final album by the legendary Brazilian ensemble Grupo UmFind albums by this artist, led by brothers Lelo NazarioFind albums by this artist (keyboards) and Zé Eduardo NazarioFind albums by this artist (drums). On this album the lineup also included saxophonist / flautist Teco CardosoFind albums by this artist, bassist Rodolfo StroeterFind albums by this artist and guests: clarinetist Felix WagnerFind albums by this artist and narrator Regina PortoFind albums by this artist. This remastered edition presents the original album and three bonus tracks: an excerpt, an alternate version and one previously unreleased track from the original recording session. The music is all original and was composed mostly by Lelo Nazario.
In the three years that separated the recording of this album and their groundbreaking debut "Marcha Sobre A CidadeFind albums with this title", Grupo Um progressed dramatically towards new forms of expression and much more complex melodic / harmonic structures, embracing Free Form improvisation and electronics. As a result this album is less accessible to the average Jazz listener and much more suitable for lovers of Avant-Garde and contemporary music. The transformation is truly remarkable and the new music emphasizes the desire to experiment and move beyond conventions.
A conceptual change is expressed also by the fact that one of the tracks is a solo performance on a plethora of percussive instruments, beautifully executed by Zé Eduardo Nazario and another one is a fascinating duo by Stroeter and Cardoso. The folkloristic Brazilian elements are much more subtle and mostly subdued and the music becomes much more universal and unconstrained geographically.
Only by the fourth track on the album the core quartet returns to the Jazz-Rock-World Fusion idiom, familiar from the earlier albums, but the music is much more spacey and full of irregularities and wonderful twists and turns, both melodically and rhythmically. In contrast to the age of the musicians involved, this music is deeply mature and encompasses an entire musical universe.
The fact that Grupo Um did not continue to record more albums is a great pity, but at least it contributed a trilogy of instrumental music, that changed the face of Brazilian and South American music forever, even if this remains mostly a deep secret to most music listeners in their own country and the world over. I can only recommend to the listeners to follow later recordings by the Nazario Brothers and other musicians who were involved in the Grupo Um saga, as they are all fascinating.
Of course the album remains completely untouched by time and sounds as good today as it did at the time of its recording. Essential stuff!

  | VÔO LIVRE ~ VÔO LIVRE EDITIO PRINCEPS 19 (Barcode: 7898901556190) ~ BRAZIL ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1981 - 1985 Released: 2011
This is a reissue of the only album recorded by the Brazilian Hard Rock / Progressive Rock power trio Vôo LivreFind albums by this artist, originating from the Rio Grande do Sul state on the Argentinean border. It comprised of guitarist Luis BentoFind albums by this artist, bassist Chico CastroFind albums by this artist and drummer L.A. VieiraFind albums by this artist. All the music performed by the group was original and co-composed by all three band members. This remastered reissue expands the original eponymous album, which presented six tracks, with two bonus tracks originating from sessions for the aborted second album and a track recorded for a compilation some years later.
The music is typical guitar power trio Rock, based on basic melodies, catchy riffs and extended instrumental improvisations, which place it stylistically somewhere between late 1960s and early 1970s, although it was recorded in the 1980s. The Portuguese vocals add a nice exotic touch, but do not change the basic direction of the music. The sound quality of the album is somewhat muddy, but has a nostalgic tinge to it. Bento´s guitar work is the absolute highlight of this album and it is every inch as impressive as the work by many famous Rock guitar players worldwide.
Overall this is a nice trip down the memory lane, bringing back to life a forgotten chapter of South American Rock, which deserves to be remembered. This album is recommended to avid collectors, who already have all the obvious albums and wish to expand their horizons into uncharted territory and of course guitar freaks, who will discover again that great guitar players are all over this planet.

  | ZÉ EDUARDO NAZARIO ~ POEMA DA GOTA SERENA E OUTROS POEMAS EDITIO PRINCEPS 22 (Barcode: 7898901556220) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion Recorded: 1977 - 2004 Released: 2014
This is a reissue of the debut solo album by Brazilian drummer / composer Zé Eduardo NazarioFind albums by this artist entitled "Poema Da Gota SerenaFind albums with this title", remastered and expanded by a plethora of bonus material and as a result presenting a fifty years career spanning retrospective release. Most of the music on this album was composed by Zé Eduardo Nazario, except for one piece composed by his brother / keyboardist Lelo NazarioFind albums by this artist and three others that are improvised pieces.
The debut solo album was recorded simultaneously with the recording of the third album by Grupo UmFind albums by this artist ("A Flor De Plastico IncineradaFind albums with this title"), of which he and his brother were members at the time. It consists of just two expanded pieces, each occupying one side of the original LP. Both are duets, first with saxophonist / flautist CacauFind albums by this artist and the second with Lelo Nazario on keyboards.
The bonus material includes unreleased recordings by Grupo Um, the duet with his brother called Duo NazarioFind albums by this artist and the group Quinteto ZenFind albums by this artist, spanning the years 1977 to 2004.
The overall level of the music is of course outstanding, as expected. The debut album is of course the most interesting material on this album both for historical / discographical reasons and the fact that it presents extremely bold ventures into Free Jazz and Improvised Music, which were completely pioneering at the time on the Brazilian scene. The Grupo Um material originates from a soundtrack the group was commissioned to create before they recorded their debut album. The Quinteto Zen material returns to the Jazz-World Fusion concept of interpretation of Brazilian music elements combined with Jazzy improvisations.
The album´s liner notes list a few dozen albums which feature Zé Eduardo Nazario contributions, including those by Brazilian legends like Hermeto PascoalFind albums by this artist, Egberto GismontiFind albums by this artist, Milton NascimentoFind albums by this artist and many others, which obviously are evidence of his many talents. This album is therefore a much deserved tribute to his life´s achievements. People interested in Brazilian music in general and Brazilian Jazz-Rock-World Fusion in particular should find this album indispensible.

  | FELIPE AVILA ~ QUASE TUDO EDITIO PRINCEPS 96 (Barcode: 7898901556961) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2008 Released: 2008
3rd album by Brazilian guitarist Felipe AvilaFind albums by this artist (member of the excellent group PercussônicaFind albums by this artist), who explores his own compositions this time, accompanied by an excellent group of fellow Brazilian musicians, including keyboardist Lelo NazarioFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Vinicius DorinFind albums by this artist, drummer NenęFind albums by this artist and many other great players. The music is very diverse, moving between straight-forward Jazz (with Brazilian flavor of course), atmospheric pieces and even freely improvised passages, all very elegantly performed and consistently absorbing. This is undoubtedly Avila´s best effort so far and a superb example of contemporary Jazz-World Fusion, which is by far the most interesting facet of modern Jazz these days. This music is uplifting and energetic, but always carefully held back before it becomes to obviously folkloristic, definitely not an easy task. For listeners, who enjoy cross-cultural excursions, this is a gem well worth investigating. Recommended!
