MILLER ANDERSON ~ BRIGHT CITY
MIG 00802 (Barcode: 885513008022) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2013

This is a reissue of the debut album as a leader by British vocalist / guitarist / songwriter Miller AndersonFind albums by this artist, one of the great unsung heroes of the British Blues-Rock scene, who is still active at the time of writing. After spending three years with the Keef Hartley BandFind albums by this artist as its vocalist / lead guitarist and recording five splendid albums with the band ("HalfbreedFind albums with this title", "The Battle Of North West SixFind albums with this title", "The Time Is NearFind albums with this title", "OverdogFind albums with this title" and "Little Big BandFind albums with this title"), he recorded this album with a dream team of musicians which included Keef Hartley Band keyboardist Peter DinesFind albums by this artist and bassist Gary ThainFind albums by this artist, as well as drummer Eric DillonFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Mick WeaverFind albums by this artist, guitarist Neil HubbardFind albums by this artist, vocalist Madeline BellFind albums by this artist and Jazz musicians: flautist Lyn DobsonFind albums by this artist and trumpeter Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist. The album presented seven original songs, all written and composed by Anderson and was originally released on the cult DeramFind albums on this label label. This reissue adds one bonus track, which is a live version of one of the album´s original songs, recorded almost four decades later.

The album presents a stunning collection of songs which cover a diverse spectrum of music that thrived at the time, moving elegantly between Blues-Rock, Folk-Rock, Prog-Rock and Jazz-Rock, emphasizing the lack of stylistic snobbishness and pompousness. These musicians were able to play delicate Folksy ballads, heavy Rock riffs and Jazzy improvisations with the same ease, completely naturally and always with full dedication. No wonder this music sounds so much better than the garbage marketed on the music market today, as it belongs to a completely different universe of musical values.

Anderson emerges on this album not only as a great vocalist and guitarist, but also as a superb songwriter. Each of these tunes is a little Rock gem, which lost absolutely nothing of its glamour over time. Sadly Anderson did not make another recording under his own name for almost three decades following the making of this album and returned to active recording career only by the turn of the Millennium.

Although not mentioned on the album´s packaging, the original master tapes were probably remastered, as the CD has a great sound quality, faithfully retaining the unique sound of the early 1970s, which of course is absolutely brilliant. This album is an absolute must to connoisseurs of the British Blues-Rock scene in particular and British Rock in general, a great trip down the memory lane and an important glimpse at a point in history, when music simply kicked ass. Wholeheartedly recommended!

GEORGIE FAME ~ THE COMPLETE LIVE BROADCASTS I
RHYTHM AND BLUES 065 (Barcode: 5060331752226) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1964 - 1967 Released: 2021

This is an archival 2CD album presenting the BBC broadcasts by the British vocalist / organist / songwriter Georgie FameFind albums by this artist and his group The Blue FlamesFind albums by this artist. The first CD presents thirty-three tracks recorded between December 1964 and December 1965. The second CD presents thirty-one tracks recorded between February 1966 and July 1967, and includes four tracks recorded with the vocalist LuluFind albums by this artist and eight tracks recorded with The Harry South Big BandFind albums by this artist.

Fame, my all-time favorite British vocalist, was quite a strange phenomenon on the burgeoning local Rhythm And Blues scene, which give birth to an immense number of groups like The Rolling StonesFind albums by this artist and eventually the entire British Rock scene. While the majority of these musicians followed initially the Blues trail, Fame (and a few others) was much more involved with Jazz influences, which are clearly evident on the tracks present here. The Blue Flames included a three-man horn section with trumpeter Eddie ThorntonFind albums by this artist and saxophonists Peter CoeFind albums by this artist and Glen HughesFind albums by this artist, as well as Jazz drummer Bill EydenFind albums by this artist, guitarist Colin GreenFind albums by this artist, bassist Tex MakinFind albums by this artist and percussionist Speedy AcquayeFind albums by this artist. In time saxophonists Lyn DobsonFind albums by this artist and Johnny MarshallFind albums by this artist, trombonist Derek WadsworthFind albums by this artist and drummers Mitch MitchellFind albums by this artist and Hughie FlintFind albums by this artist all played in Fame’s band.

The material includes a mixture of Fame’s early hits (“Yeh Yeh” and “In The Meantime”) and less know material, all perfectly recorded and although in mono, sound brilliantly fresh, and considering the fact that this is the first time they can be enjoyed in full, this album is worth its weight in gold. Since I was convinced that I owned everything Fame has ever recorded, this was a huge surprise and the fact that a second volume of stuff is in preparation is even more exciting. Can’t wait!

For Fame followers this stuff is absolutely essential and none of them would like to miss this (or the next volume) in their collections. Heaven on earth!

GROUP SOUNDS FOUR & FIVE ~ BLACK & WHITE RAGA
JAZZ IN BRITAIN 14 (Barcode: 5060774190128) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1965 - 1966 Released: 2021

This is an archival album by the British Jazz quintet Group Sounds FiveFind albums by this artist, and quartet Group Sounds FourFind albums by this artist, both offspring of the quintet founded by trumpeter Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Lyn DobsonFind albums by this artist, which also included pianist Ken McCarthyFind albums by this artist, bassist Ron RubinFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. The quartet includes Lowther, Dobson, Jack BruceFind albums by this artist on bass and Hiseman. The album presents four tracks by the quintet and three tracks by the quartet, all taken from radio broadcasts. The material includes original compositions by Bruce, Dobson and McCarthy, a couple of standards, a piece by John ColtraneFind albums by this artist and a piece by Mike TaylorFind albums by this artist.

The music is everything one might expect to hear at the time by British Jazz musicians, who were defining the modern British sound, still very much entangled into the Bebop tradition on one side, and searching to find their own voice on the other. There is enough originality and innovation herein to make it a fascinating historic document of the era.

Of course the three quartet tracks with Bruce are especially interesting, both because his rare appearance in the strict Jazz idiom and his very open, almost free composition included here, which is a preamble to his wonderful “Things We LikeFind albums with this title” album recorded a couple of years later. The quintet tracks are slightly less challenging, but the title track, which lasts for twelve minutes, is a masterpiece in every respect.

The personal performances are stellar, including Hiseman, who takes a long solo both with the quartet and the quintet. Although the quintet offers a “bigger” sound, the piano is somewhat under-recorded and lost in the mix, which is a pity. But the overall sound quality however is excellent and the music sounds bright and clear.

Overall this is the most interesting CD release by the new Jazz In Britain label so far, hopefully pointing in the right direction. For British Jazz fans, who wish to learn more about the birth of the unique character of late 1960s sound, which revolutionized the idiom, this album is the “missing link” and an absolute must have.

MANFRED MANN ~ ORIGINAL ALBUM SERIES
PARLOPHONE 825646285297 (Barcode: 825646285297) ~ UK ~ Classic Pop

Recorded: 1963 - 1966 Released: 2014

This Box Set collects the four UK albums recorded by the first version of the British Pop group Manfred MannFind albums by this artist, released originally on the HMVFind albums on this label label, and the first solo album by their vocalist Paul JonesFind albums by this artist, and includes material recorded between 1963 and 1966, a period spanning just over three years. The original members of the group were: keyboardist / vibraphonist Manfred Mann, drummer Mike HuggFind albums by this artist, guitarist / saxophonist / flautist Mike VickersFind albums by this artist (all of them coming from a Jazz background), bassist Dave RichmondFind albums by this artist, soon to be replaced by Tom McGuinnessFind albums by this artist and vocalist / harmonica player Paul Jones. By autumn 1965 Vickers left, McGuinness moved to guitar and the band was joined by Jack BruceFind albums by this artist on bass, Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist on trumpet and Lyn DobsonFind albums by this artist on saxophone, all three being prominent members of the new generation of British Jazz players.

Listening to these four albums (the Jones´ album is of secondary importance) clearly illustrates not only their many qualities but also their rapid progress from early American influenced Rhythm And Blues and Rock And Roll to their own individual style, which embraced sophisticated chord changes, complex rhythms, a tendency towards Jazz improvisation and a love of instrumental compositions, combined with exquisite sense of melody.

In order to fully appreciate the group´s incredible journey it is recommended to get a copy of the incredible Manfred Mann anthology "Down The Road Apiece: Their EMI Recordings 1963-1966Find albums with this title", which includes absolutely everything they recorded during those early years. Of course also the second part of their output, released on the FontanaFind albums on this label label, which finds the band fronted by their second vocalist Mike d`AboFind albums by this artist, is equally fascinating and worth investigating.

As I have been saying for decades, it is painfully obvious, especially now in retrospect that Manfred Mann were one of several British groups infinitely better musically than The BeatlesFind albums by this artist; a statement I have been bitterly criticized for, but which I am ready to repeat any time. This music simply proves my point to anybody who is willing to listen with an open mind. Wholeheartedly recommended!
Side Note
The "Original Album SeriesFind albums with this title" by Warner Bros.Find albums on this label, the "Original Album ClassicsFind albums with this title" by SonyFind albums on this label, the "5 Original AlbumsFind albums with this title" by UniversalFind albums on this label, the Box Sets by RhinoFind albums on this label and other similar releases are an archetypal example of how good intentions turn sour. Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases has been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard for the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires as to treat our Cultural Legacy with respect and loyalty.

The Box Sets produced under these monikers have no discographical information whatsoever about the lineups, musician names, composers, lyricists, dates and places of recording, original release data and even basic copyright data (the last is strictly illegal BTW). Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, they are often edited and information (which would be in most cases too small to be readable) is removed. Most importantly these Box Sets don't include any booklet offering a historical background and perspective about the Artists and the Music, which are extremely important and vital to the preservation of our Culture and passing the knowledge to the next generations.

In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap. Considering the fact how many times this music has been sold over and over again by the labels, this is a crying shame!

MANFRED MANN ~ RADIO DAYS VOL. 1: THE PAUL JONES ERA
EAST CENTRAL ONE 1 (Barcode: 5060051334467) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1964 - 1966 Released: 2019

This is the first volume of an archive series collecting the BBC radio recordings by the various groups led by British keyboardist / composer / bandleader Manfred MannFind albums by this artist. This volume, recorded between 1964 and 1966 includes the recordings by the quintet lineup of Manfred Mann (the group not to be confused with the leader), which consisted of Mann on keyboards, Mike VickersFind albums by this artist on guitar, saxophone and flute, Tom McGuinnessFind albums by this artist on bass, Mike HuggFind albums by this artist on drums and vibraphone and finally the lead singer Paul JonesFind albums by this artist, who also played harmonica. The second CD of the 2CD set features the second lineup of the group formed when Vickers left and McGuinness switched to guitar, which includes the legendary bass player Jack BruceFind albums by this artist and two Jazz players: trumpeter Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Lyn DobsonFind albums by this artist, which obviously has a much more Jazz oriented sound and is a rare example of the early (1966!) British Jazz-Rock Fusion.

The album presents forty one tracks, which include songs, original announcements and interviews, altogether a superb historical glance at British Pop / Rock at its best. When Paul Jones decided to leave Manfred Mann to pursue a solo career, he was replaced by Mike d`AboFind albums by this artist, who is the hero of the next volume of this series.

In contrast to most British Pop / Rock groups at the time, Manfred Mann had a very strong Jazz / Blues background and outstanding instrumental competence, which was clearly heard in everything they played. To a trained ear it was pretty obvious that the group would rather play a more Jazz oriented material, which the constraints of the Pop idiom did not allow them to do at the time, but they did record many instrumental pieces (included here) which were bona fide Jazz material. With the explosion of the Progressive Rock a few years later, it was no surprise that Manfred Mann would follow that way full-heartedly.

The music included here is a fabulous proof that they don´t make music like this any more. The melodies, the playing and the superb BBC sound are all exactly right on the money and the joy of listening to this music goes way beyond a nostalgic glimpse at the past.

Overall this is an absolute must for all Manfred Mann fans and connoisseurs of British Pop / Rock of the mid-1960s period and a stunning historical document of the period, which should not be missed! The music was compiled by Greg RussoFind albums by this artist, who also wrote the informative booklet accompanying this album – great job mate!

SOFT MACHINE ~ ALIVE IN PARIS 1970
VOICEPRINT 045 (Barcode: 604388704200) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2008

Although the early period of the legendary Canterbury band Soft MachineFind albums by this artist is relatively well documented on record, especially in the last decade when many live recordings of the band have been unearthed, cleaned up and released, video material was so far almost completely nonexistent. Therefore if there is a Holy Grail of Canterbury scene, and of course of Soft Machine, this is it! This footage, filmed by French TV at the Theatre de la Musique is not only a stellar visual experience but also a great sonic document due to the theatre´s superb acoustic. The band is at their most creative peak of course and what´s more the quintet lineup here, including Lyn DobsonFind albums by this artist on saxes and flute, existed for a mere few months and is almost undocumented on record. Elton DeanFind albums by this artist, Mike RatledgeFind albums by this artist, Hugh HopperFind albums by this artist and Robert WyattFind albums by this artist are the band´s backbone and of course everybody plays their hearts out in glorious harmony and high-spirited atmosphere. I don´t need to emphasize how great and groundbreaking this music is (as I have done repeatedly so many times already), so let´s just say that this is an essential piece of music history, which deserves a place in any serious music collection.

VOICEPRINT 345 (Barcode: 604388318520) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2004

Recorded live in Holland (Breda), this album documents the brief period in the history of this legendary band Soft MachineFind albums by this artist (lasting only for about 3 months) when it included as a fifth member (in addition to the core members) the talented multi-instrumentalist Lyn DobsonFind albums by this artist. This marks a more jazzy sound then ever before, with both Dobson and Elton DeanFind albums by this artist exploring long and comples saxophone solos. The sound quality is surprisingly clear (as opposed to many other SM live recordings) and this is a most important document of the era.
