  | CAMEL ~ I CAN SEE YOUR HOUSE FROM HERE (EXPANDED EDITION) ESOTERIC 2158 (Barcode: 5013929725829) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1979 Released: 2009
8th album by British Prog legends CamelFind albums by this artist, which marks a transition period in the band´s history, which followed a five years of personnel stability and incredibly productive output, as documented by their albums released during that period. Following the departure of founding member / keyboardist Peter BardensFind albums by this artist soon after recording this album´s predecessor – "BreathlessFind albums with this title" – the remaining two founding members: guitarist Andy LatimerFind albums by this artist and drummer Andy WardFind albums by this artist recruited three new members to complete the new lineup: bass player Colin BassFind albums by this artist (Steve HillageFind albums by this artist), keyboardist Jan SchelhaasFind albums by this artist (CaravanFind albums by this artist) and American keyboardist Kit WatkinsFind albums by this artist (Happy The ManFind albums by this artist). The new quintet lineup recorded this album, with a guest appearance by Phil CollinsFind albums by this artist (GenesisFind albums by this artist) on one track. As to the music included on the album; although more consistent and ambitious than it´s predecessor, at the time of its release it was considered both by the band´s fans and critics as disappointing and way too "commercial" in comparison to the band´s earlier efforts. In retrospect, although different indeed, it still preserves an incredibly high musical standard and integrity, both on the compositional and performance level, and suggests that it was rather the fans, who disliked change, then the band, which propagated change, which caused the fracture. There is no doubt that this album belongs to the proud heritage of music left to us by one of the best British Prog bands in the genre´s history. Recommended!

  | DAVID CROSBY ~ THOUSAND ROADS ATLANTIC 075678248429 (Barcode: 075678248429) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock Recorded: 1993 Released: 1993
This is the third studio album by the iconic American singer / songwriter David CrosbyFind albums by this artist released four years after its predecessor "Oh Yes I CanFind albums with this title". The album was recorded in different studios, with many different musicians (almost fifty), including the "regulars" like bassist Leland SklarFind albums by this artist, drummer Russell KunkelFind albums by this artist and keyboardist Craig DoergeFind albums by this artist, as well as a long list of guest appearances by such legends as Phil CollinsFind albums by this artist, Jimmy WebbFind albums by this artist, Graham NashFind albums by this artist, Jackson BrowneFind albums by this artist and others. The album presents ten songs, only one of which (the title song) was written by Crosby and two were co-written by him (one with Collins and one with Joni MitchellFind albums by this artist).
Although this is still very much Crosby at his best as a singer, the fact that the songs are not his in most cases create an overall orientation towards Pop, more apparent than on any of his other albums. The instrumental work is of course superb all the way through, although again suffering a bit from the 1990s production drawbacks (too much keyboards).
In retrospect this is still very much an album worth remembering, despite the fact that it was rather neglected by his fans over time. Crosby is simply way too talented to make music not up to par with the best efforts out there. Sadly this album was to mark a twenty one years long period of absence as far as solo albums were concerned, except for the live album "It`s All Coming Back To Me NowFind albums with this title" released in 1995. His triumphant comeback with the album "CrozFind albums with this title" in 2014 marked a new period of ferocious activity, which continues to this very day.
This is definitely an album worth being rediscovered by all those Crosby fans that missed it at the time of its release, and of course a valuable lesson to young listeners, to get idea about what music is all about!

  | AL DI MEOLA ~ SCENARIO CBS 5099702571821 (Barcode: 5099702571821) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1983 Released: 1983
This is the 6th studio album by American guitarist / composer Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, recorded in 1983 and his last release on ColumbiaFind albums on this label Records. Most of the tracks were recorded by Di Meola and keyboardist Jan HammerFind albums by this artist, who play all the instruments. Bassist Tony LevinFind albums by this artist and drummer Bill BrufordFind albums by this artist play on one track and drummer Phil CollinsFind albums by this artist plays on another track. The album presents nine tracks, four of which were composed by Di Meola, two by Hammer and three co-composed by them both.
Although the music on this album is not diametrically different from earlier Di Meola efforts, being a mixture of superb melodies, Jazz licks, Fusion Groove and Folkloristic accents, the sound of the album is dominated by synthesizers and early electronic devices, which was the curse of the 1980s. The presence of Hammer as the main co-contributor / composer also influenced the result, and Hammer’s passion with electronic music is omnipresent here. The resulting music sadly sounds dated today, despite the obvious talents of its creators.
As a result, this is the least successful album by Di Meola in retrospect, with his guitar playing hardly present and the World Music influences appearing only sparingly. Perhaps the pressures form the record label to produce a more commercial product were behind the scenes. Happily, Di Meola returned back on track with his following albums.
Overall, this is a reminder of the closing chapter of Di Meola’s stint with Columbia, which does not maintain the same vitality and freshness as his earlier albums, which still sound quite brilliant today. Of course for Di Meola completists, this album worthy its place in the collection, but not essential to general public.

  | DAVE GREENSLADE ~ THE PENTATEUCH OF THE COSMOGONY BGO 170 (Barcode: 5017261201706) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1979 Released: 1994
2nd solo album by keyboardist Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist, known to Prog fans as a member of the legendary ColosseumFind albums by this artist and leader of his group GreensladeFind albums by this artist, originally released as a double LP accompanied by a stunningly produced science fiction book written and illustrated by Patrick WoodroffeFind albums by this artist, somewhat resembling the art of Roger DeanFind albums by this artist. This ambitious project remains to this day a great example of cooperation between music and graphic arts. The music written and performed by Greenslade on a plethora of keyboards (with some drum parts played by Phil CollinsFind albums by this artist and John LingwoodFind albums by this artist) marks his departure from the jazzy improvisational style he used previously into more classical / ambient direction, which disappointed many of his fans at the time of this album´s release. However, in retrospect, one must judge this music as part of the entire concept, which was highly innovative at the time. The album / book package definitely retains much of its artistic merit. The lavish CD reissue includes the complete music and a copy of the original book packaged together in a box-set. Definitely worth investigating, if you can get it.
