CHICK COREA ~ SEPTET
ECM 1297 (Barcode: 042282725820) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1984 Released: 1985

This remarkable album by pianist / composer Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist marks his first full-scale entry into contemporary Classical music. It includes his five-part suite for septet (piano, string quartet, flute and French horn) and another shorter piece, originally composed for guitarist Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist. The septet consists of Classical musicians and includes flautist Steve KujalaFind albums by this artist, who also recorded a duo album with Corea ("VoyageFind albums with this title"). The music, although intended as contemporary Classical, hints clearly to the composer´s Jazz background, both rhythmically and melodically. Beautifully performed, with some exceptional flute solos, this is a piece of music that is worthy of habitual revisits, satisfaction guaranteed. A must to Jazz-Classical Fusion fans and Corea connoisseurs!

PACO DE LUCIA / AL DI MEOLA / JOHN MCLAUGHLIN ~ THE GUITAR TRIO
VERVE 533215 (Barcode: 731453321526) ~ SPAIN ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1996 Released: 1996

14 years after recording their last acoustic guitar album together, Paco De LuciaFind albums by this artist, Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist and John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist - three guitar geniuses - get together again to deliver a follow up. This album is every bit as good as their previous encounters. There is no evidence whatsoever of weariness, on the contrary – age seems to agree with them, refining their musical instincts. As usual, the music was all composed by the players themselves, except one bossa-nova, which gets a superb treatment. The format of duos and trios seems to be a perfect vehicle for all three players to express their outstanding abilities and they explore it to the extreme. There is really not much to say here, except recommend this album to every music lover – satisfaction guaranteed.

PACO DE LUCIA / JOHN MCLAUGHLIN ~ PACO AND JOHN – LIVE AT MONTREUX 1987
EAR MUSIC 4029759132035 (Barcode: 4029759132035) ~ SPAIN ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1987 Released: 2016

This is a 2CD live album documenting the 1987 appearance by the guitar duo of Spanish guitar virtuoso Paco De LuciaFind albums by this artist and British guitar wizard John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist at the Montreux Jazz Festival. The two recorded a couple of revolutionary guitar trio albums in the early 1980s together wit American guitarist Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, which achieved worldwide acclaim and were superb examples of the Jazz-World Music Fusion. Almost a decade after the concert captured here (in 1996) the trio reunited to record their final album together. The album presents nine tracks (one a medley of two compositions), two solo (one each) and then seven duo performances, which include original compositions by De Lucia and McLaughlin, a Jazz standard, and one composition each by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Egberto GismontiFind albums by this artist. The music is excellently recorded and allows all the subtle nuances of the two guitars to be heard perfectly.

The music and the performances are of course Godly by any standard, as these two musicians are perfectly bonded not only by their sublime talents but also a deep personal friendship and affinity. After years of playing together they created a wonderful amalgam of their individual playing styles and idiosyncrasies, which separately are almost unbridgeable, into a perfect unity. The music bridges genres and styles, cultural influences and playing techniques, which of course is quite common today but was less obvious at the time.

It is important to understand that this music goes far beyond showing off individual talents, and is first and foremost and attempt to bring people together. It is also completely universal and although obviously immediately appealing to lovers of the guitar, in is able to penetrate the heart of every true music connoisseur. The passing time made it vividly clear that this music is absolutely timeless and should be cherished forever!

AL DE MEOLA / JOHN MCLAUGHLIN / PACO DE LUCIA ~ SATURDAY NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO
EAR MUSIC 4029759177913 (Barcode: 4029759177913) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1980 Released: 2022

This is a sensational archival album, which presents for the first time the material by the legendary trio of American guitarist Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, British guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist and Spanish guitarist Paco De LuciaFind albums by this artist, recorded at the Saturday concert following the Friday concert that produced one of the most iconic Jazz-World Fusion and Jazz Guitar albums “Friday Night In San FranciscoFind albums with this title”. The album presents seven tracks, six of which are original compositions by the trio members and one is by Brazilian guitarist / composer Luiz BonfaFind albums by this artist.

None of the compositions on this album appear on the original album, which is even more spectacular. Four of the tracks present performances by the trio and three are solo performances by each of the trio members, which is also quite different from the original album, which offered three duets and two trio performances, one recorded a few months later in the studio. In short this new album is a completely new addition to the original album, and a wonderful “missing link” to the music the trio played at the time, i.e. during the 1980 concert tour.

The music is of course everything one expects from these three Maestros, an incredible amalgam of styles and passions, which puts together Jazz, Fusion and Flamenco into one steaming pot, which works.

Overall, this music should have been released at the time as part of a double album with the original material, but better late than never, as long as it is not lost in the vault. Essential and classic stuff, which deserves to be heard and learned from. With De Lucia no longer with us, this is a tribute to his memory. Absolutely not to be missed!

AL DI MEOLA ~ ACROSS THE UNIVERSE
EAR MUSIC 4029759140313 (Barcode: 4029759140313) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Pop Fusion

Recorded: 2019 Released: 2020

This is an album by American guitar hero Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, his second release paying tribute to the music by The BeatlesFind albums by this artist, following the “All Your LifeFind albums with this title” album from 2013. Di Meola plays several guitars, bass, drums and percussion, which makes this almost a solo album, but there are also some strings and brass arrangements and the Indian tabla player Amit KavthekarFind albums by this artist, Italian accordionist Fausto BeccalossiFind albums by this artist and American trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist play on selected tracks. The album presents fourteen tracks, all familiar songs composed by The Beatles.

The music takes the Pop songs into the Jazz-World Fusion world, which is the turf where Di Meola feels most comfortable, and the virtuosic guitar improvisations and dense arrangements transform the songs into new environment, but leave enough of the original melodies so the listener is able to recognize them without much effort.

Personally this album is a bit too busy for me, i.e. too many things are happening all at once, and since The Beatles music has been utterly explored almost to death, the entire enterprise leaves me somewhat cold, but I do appreciate the musicianship and talent involved.

Overall, this is a nice display of Di Meola’s abilities, but somewhat hectic and populist as far as I am concerned. But guitar aficionados and Beatles deadheads will love this to bits.

AL DI MEOLA ~ ALL YOUR LIFE
IN-AKUSTIK 9128 (Barcode: 707787912822) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2012 - 2013 Released: 2013

This is a solo guitar album by American Jazz guitarist / composer Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, which, as the title suggests, is a tribute to the music of The BeatlesFind albums by this artist. The album presents fourteen tracks, all composed by John LennonFind albums by this artist / Paul McCartneyFind albums by this artist and recorded during three separate sessions at London’s Abbey Road Studios, where The Beatles recorded their music originally.

Di Meola’s interpretations of the songs are often quite remote from the original, which of course is hardly surprising. Therefore, although a tribute, the album is to no lesser extent also an original creation by the guitarist. All the music is performed using different acoustic guitars, sometimes overdubbed, with a strong Latin / Flamenco / Mediterranean accents, which characterize Di Meola’s musical path since his early days. His guitar performances are of course absolutely brilliant, and completely devoid of flashy show-off licks that many guitar players are often guilty of.

Overall, this is an intense, beautiful and superbly performed album, which should keep all guitar loving fans perfectly happy. Beatles’ fans might find this music be quite remote from the popular versions of these songs, but then again it’s been almost six decades since the original songs were recorded, so perhaps it’s time to move on musically. Brilliant stuff!

AL DI MEOLA ~ CIELO E TERRA / SOARING THROUGH A DREAM / TIRAMI SU
BGO 0879 (Barcode: 5017261208798) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1985 - 1987 Released: 2009

Guitarist / composer Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist is a brilliant example of a musician, who never stands still and keeps changing and improving in time, rather than hanging on to the fame and success achieved in a distant past. A superb Master of his instrument, Di Meola´s journey through music is an epic story beginning in the early 1970s in the epicenter of the then exploding Fusion movement as a member of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist, and continuing with a long succession of solo recordings, which is now in its 4th decade.

This brilliant reissue covers the transitional period in Di Meola´s career in the mid-1980s, when he was moving away from Fusion deeper and deeper into his own unique niche, which combines Jazz and World Music, creating some of the most beautiful music imaginable. Included here are all three albums Di Meola recorded for the ManhattanFind albums on this label Records label, which clearly show his transition as well as the gradual switch to acoustic guitar. Although quite different from each other, the logical development is clearly omnipresent and quite fascinating.

The three albums were recorded in three different settings: the first is a duet, the second a quintet and the last a septet, with some superb musicians taking part: the great Brazilian percussionist Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist, drummer Danny GottliebFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Kei AkagiFind albums by this artist, bassist Harvey SwartzFind albums by this artist, percussionist Mino CineluFind albums by this artist and other distinguished players. Almost all of the music included here was composed by Di Meola, with just a few exceptions, all of it brilliant and moving. This is the stuff that makes listening to music a real pleasure, brilliant, intelligent, emotional and everlasting. A must!

AL DI MEOLA ~ CONSEQUENCE OF CHAOS
TELARC 83649 (Barcode: 089408364921) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006

There are quite a few parallels between guitar Masters Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist and John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist. Each has a very unique and personal style of course, but both alternate between the electric and acoustic version of their instrument and both ventured deeply into wold music influences (Di Meola absorbing Flamenco and Tango and McLaughlin exploring Indian music) during their extensive careers, returning to the Jazz-Rock Fusion (which was their Alma Matter) periodically. And of course they recorded together several times. This album takes Di Meola back to his roots, which are of course his work with Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist. Returning to his electric guitar and with Chick as guest (playing some fiery solos), the atmosphere is reminiscent of the RTF hay days. All the superb participating musicians (Steve GaddFind albums by this artist – drums, John PatitucciFind albums by this artist – bass, Barry MilesFind albums by this artist – keyboards and others) perform beautifully and the music (written entirely by Di Meola) flows with grace and elegance. Although strong world music influences are still present, the Fusion sound is predominant and unmistakable. It is heartwarming to see that Di Meola manages to produce such a consistently excellent music over the years, for which he deserves praise and respect. The usual TelarcFind albums on this label exquisite sound quality is an additional factor making this a truly excellent album. Highly recommended!

AL DI MEOLA ~ ELEGANT GYPSY & MORE - LIVE
EAR MUSIC 4029759122494 (Barcode: 4029759122494) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2018

This is a live album by American guitar hero Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, recorded during his 2017 US tour, on which he was supported by a splendid group of musicians, which included keyboardist Phil MagallanesFind albums by this artist, percussionist Gumbi OrtizFind albums by this artist, bassist Elias TonaFind albums by this artist, drummer Luis AliceaFind albums by this artist and violinist Evan GarrFind albums by this artist. Keyboardist Philippe SaisseFind albums by this artist replaces Magallanes on three tracks. The album presents ten tracks, seven of which were composed by Di Meola, one is by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, another one is by Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist and finally one is a surprising gesture towards Led ZeppelinFind albums by this artist. The recording quality and sound are a bit loud, but appropriate for the energy that prevailed on stage.

As the title suggests, Di Meola revisits three tracks from his 2nd solo album “Elegant GypsyFind albums with this title”, one from the “Kiss My AxeFind albums with this title” album and the rest reflect the entire span of his long career, including his stint with Corea, his fascination with Piazzolla and his early Rock influences. All the compositions have been rearranged and “upgraded” to contemporary sound and speeded up to contemporary steroidal tempi.

All the musicians are of course superb performers and Di Meola lost nothing of his phenomenal abilities and virtuosity, so the album becomes a nice nostalgic trip down memory lane and a showcase of spine-chilling guitar pyrotechnics, which should keep Di Meola’s fans utterly happy.

Overall, this is an excellent live recording of the Jazz-Rock Fusion chapter of Di Meola’s splendid chapter. Personally I much prefer his laid-back, acoustic Jazz-World Fusion recordings, which are absolutely stunning, but of course it is very difficult not to enjoy this facet of his career, which brought him to the world’s attention at the first place.

AL DI MEOLA ~ FLESH ON FLESH
TELARC 83543 (Barcode: 089408354328) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2002 Released: 2002

Ever since Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist’s early days as a member of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist (with whom he recorded three splendid albums in the mid-1970s: Where Have I Known You BeforeFind albums with this title, No MysteryFind albums with this title and Romantic WarriorFind albums with this title) and then as a solo recording artist since 1976, his output has been consistently excellent. This remarkable career now stretches over 4 decades and Al seems to be going as strong as ever. A master of both the electric and the acoustic guitar, Di Meola refined his style over the years. Finesse and delicacy, replaced the youthful zest and energy, as demonstrated on his early albums by his guitar pyrotechnics. The love of Fusion was expanded and enriched by love of World Music, which presents an infinite source of inspiration. The 1990s saw Di Meola getting involved extensively with World Music, when he formed his group called World Sinfonia (with some of the best musicians from all over the world) and recorded a tribute to the great Argentinean composer Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist. In 1998 Di Meola signed with the excellent TelarcFind albums on this label label, famous for it’s superb sound recording quality, and this is his 4th release on that label. As usual the music is a tasty mixture of fiery Fusion and elegant World Music. Di Meola switches between the acoustic and electric guitar according the mood of the music. Also as usual, he includes some distinguished guests to play along with, this time the legendary Cuban keyboards player Gonzalo RubalcabaFind albums by this artist (who adds some of his own fire to the proceedings) and veteran bass virtuoso Anthony JacksonFind albums by this artist, who played with Di Meola on his early Fusion albums. Although Di Meola usually writes all the music on his albums, this time a Chick Corea composition was also included to celebrate the Di Meola / Jackson reunion. All together another triumphant achievement for Al and a superb musical experience. Most warmly recommended.

AL DI MEOLA ~ HEART OF THE IMMIGRANTS
WOUNDED BIRD 9052 (Barcode: 664140905221) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1993 Released: 2005

Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist’s amazing talents as composer and guitarist have been with us since the early 1970s, when he captured the world’s attention as the guitarist of Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist. After leaving RTF in late 1976 Di Meola started to record a series of solo albums, alternating between acoustic and electric guitar. The first years of his solo career were dedicated to the Fusion genre, but gradually he incorporated many other musical elements in his work, such as classical and world music. He also cooperated with John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist and Paco de LuciaFind albums by this artist in a series of acoustic guitar trio recordings, which rank amongst the most revered albums of such type. This beautiful album presents Al’s on acoustic guitar with a group called “World Sinfonia”, playing superb instrumental music influenced by world music elements, the Argentinean tango in particular. In fact this is a second album in which Di Meola pays tribute to the Argentinean genius Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist. Although only four of the included tracks were composed by Piazzolla, the rest of the music, composed by Di Meola, is close in spirit to the Master’s legacy. The bandeneon virtuoso Dino SaluzziFind albums by this artist is another world famous group member taking part in these recordings and his contribution help immensely to create the authentic tango atmosphere. The entire album is a masterpiece of musical creation, exciting, emotional and incredibly beautiful all the way through. One would have to be completely deaf to stay indifferent to this enchanting music.

AL DI MEOLA ~ MOROCCO FANTASIA
IN-AKUSTIK 9132 (Barcode: 707787913225) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2008 Released: 2017

This is a live album by American guitarist / composer / bandleader Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, recorded live in Morocco with his World SinfoniaFind albums by this artist ensemble and local guests. The ensemble includes accordionist Fausto BeccalossiFind albums by this artist, guitarist Peo AlfonsiFind albums by this artist, bassist Victor MirandaFind albums by this artist, percussionist Gumbi OrtizFind albums by this artist and drummer Peter KaszasFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight tracks, seven of which are original compositions by Di Meola and one is by Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist.

The music is nothing short of sublime, especially with the live ambience, continuing Di Meola’s fascination of World Music, especially the Mediterranean musical cultures. The brilliant amalgam of Flamenco, Spanish, Italian, Eastern European and Arabic elements is completely unique and this period of recordings with the World Sinfonia is definitely the most refined and satisfying in his long and prolific career.

Although the local guest musician’s contributions are only marginal, they add to the entire atmosphere of Word unity in music, strengthened by the enthusiastically worm reception by the audience. The concert was also released in video version, for those interested.

Overall, this is spectacular illustration of how music can be completely borderless and universal, and how well it can work together regardless of its origin. Di Meola is not only a great virtuoso, but perhaps more importantly a superb integrator of World Cultures, for which he deserves the highest applaud. This album is a must to all Jazz-World Fusion fans.

Following his early years dedicated to Jazz-Rock Fusion, Di Meola immersed himself completely in the amalgamation of his amazing virtuosity as a guitarist and his rare melody weaving talent with World Music, creating over the years a brilliant collection of Jazz-World Fusion albums, definitely some of the best specimens of the genre.

This album offers a wide spectrum of influences, from his natural strong Latin roots, to European and Middle Eastern Folklore, some Classical and other sources, creating a sizzling, beautifully melodic and rhythmically fascinating music, which is both accessible and highly aesthetic. Over the years Di Meola emerged as one of the most consistent American Jazz and Jazz-World Fusion recording artists, with unparalleled Artistic vision.

AL DI MEOLA ~ SCENARIO
CBS 5099702571821 (Barcode: 5099702571821) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1983 Released: 1983

This is the 6th studio album by American guitarist / composer Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, recorded in 1983 and his last release on ColumbiaFind albums on this label Records. Most of the tracks were recorded by Di Meola and keyboardist Jan HammerFind albums by this artist, who play all the instruments. Bassist Tony LevinFind albums by this artist and drummer Bill BrufordFind albums by this artist play on one track and drummer Phil CollinsFind albums by this artist plays on another track. The album presents nine tracks, four of which were composed by Di Meola, two by Hammer and three co-composed by them both.

Although the music on this album is not diametrically different from earlier Di Meola efforts, being a mixture of superb melodies, Jazz licks, Fusion Groove and Folkloristic accents, the sound of the album is dominated by synthesizers and early electronic devices, which was the curse of the 1980s. The presence of Hammer as the main co-contributor / composer also influenced the result, and Hammer’s passion with electronic music is omnipresent here. The resulting music sadly sounds dated today, despite the obvious talents of its creators.

As a result, this is the least successful album by Di Meola in retrospect, with his guitar playing hardly present and the World Music influences appearing only sparingly. Perhaps the pressures form the record label to produce a more commercial product were behind the scenes. Happily, Di Meola returned back on track with his following albums.

Overall, this is a reminder of the closing chapter of Di Meola’s stint with Columbia, which does not maintain the same vitality and freshness as his earlier albums, which still sound quite brilliant today. Of course for Di Meola completists, this album worthy its place in the collection, but not essential to general public.

The music is the usual splendid mixture of superb melodies, Jazz licks, Fusion Groove and Spanish / Latin / Mediterranean / Flamenco Folkloristic accents, which was De Meola’s home turf. There is plenty of brilliant guitar playing by Di Meola and excellent parts by the guest artists, and although these two albums are not surprising or innovative as far as Di Meola’s output in the first decade of his career is concerned, they withstand the test of time splendidly and still sound great today.

Overall, this is a marvelous reminder of the early days of Di Meola’s recording career, full of virtuosity, superb compositions and passionate performances by him and his cohorts, which were the leading American Fusion musicians at the time. AL DI MEOLA ~ THE INFINITE DESIRE
TELARC 83433 (Barcode: 089408343322) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1998 Released: 1998

This is Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist’s debut album for the excellent TelarcFind albums on this label label, a move which seemed quite unusual at the time as the label was mostly associated with releases by the old generation of straight-ahead mainstream jazz players. In retrospect Telarc turned out to work extremely well for Di Meola, as the label´s renowned sound quality suits perfectly his delicate music. On the album Di Meola continues and expands the format he’s been following since the late 1980s, which is a crossover between Fusion and World Music influences. As usual, he wrote all the music on the album, which reflects perfectly his constant development as a musician and composer. The innovation on this album is Al’s usage of guitar synthesizer, although he switches between his electric (or in this case electronic) and acoustic guitars quite often. Almost every track on this album features a different lineup, with numerous guest musicians appearing alongside Di Meola (like Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist - piano, Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist - drums, John PatitucciFind albums by this artist - bass and others), which of course makes the album more interesting instrumentally. Although Di Meola’s output is consistently excellent, this is definitely one of his best albums and a most warmly recommended addition to any serious record collection.

This is an album by American guitar hero Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, his first studio release in four years, recorded in several studios around the world and with many different musicians participating on selected tracks. The recording details are not specified on the album’s artwork, but Di Meola states that the music was developed during the last four years, starting during the “dark period” of the Pandemic and slowly taking the shape presented here. Di Meola played many different instruments on this album: guitars, bass, keyboards and percussion, as well as wrote the orchestral arrangements. Some of the musicians participating on the album include keyboardist Derek WielandFind albums by this artist, guitarist Hernan RomeroFind albums by this artist, percussionist Gumbi OrtizFind albums by this artist, tabla player Amit KavthekarFind albums by this artist and others. The 2CD album presents fifteen tracks, all composed and arranged by Di Meola. The album offers stunning recording sound and aural quality.

Stylistically Di Meola continues his magnificent journey through the infinite varieties of World Music, spiced with Jazzy improvisational accents, this time also enhanced by orchestral arrangements, which touch upon Flamenco, Latin, Gypsy, Indian, Middle Eastern and other musical traditions. In many respects this album sums up Di Meola’s musical path during the last four decades, since he switched from Jazz-Rock Fusion towards World Music inspirations. As an avid follower of his work, I’d say that this album is his Magnum Opus, considering the wealth of musical ideas and the artistic and aesthetic consistency of its contents. It is a true Masterpiece, embracing music without boundaries and respecting the diversity and magic that World Music is able to bestow upon the listener.

Overall, this is a triumphant return by one of the most creative and honest musical personalities, which offers an abundance of beautiful Jazz-World Fusion vistas, which take the listener literally on an “around the world” musical journey, presented elegantly and played magnificently. There is not a dull moment on this album from start to finish, and once the music is over, one simply compelled to repeat the experience again! Beyond recommendation!

AL DI MEOLA ~ WINTER NIGHTS
TELARC 83458 (Barcode: 089408345821) ~ UK ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1999 Released: 1999

This is an album by American guitar hero Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, recorded with Ukrainian bandura player Roman HrynkivFind albums by this artist and Di Meola’s faithful companion Hernan RomeroFind albums by this artist on percussion. The album presents fifteen tracks, most composed by Di Meola, some co-composed with Hrynkiv, some by other composers and finally some traditional Christmas songs. Although usually considered as Di Meola’s “Christmas album”, it has in fact little to do with Christmas songs as such, other than the atmosphere of the music and inclusion of a few Xmas favorites.

The music is beautifully melodic and quiet, but stylistically it is soaked with ethnic influences and offers another of Di Meola’s Jazz-World Fusion explorations, only slightly Xmas oriented. The guitar parts are less “busy” than usual and the bandura (Ukrainian plucked-string folk instrument) offers a nice harmony with the acoustic guitar.

Overall, this is a splendid opportunity to enjoy De Meola’s relaxed, acoustic guitar performances, splendidly, although minimally accompanied by his cohorts, and full of virtuosic guitar parts, as expected. Perhaps less known than his other albums, this is a pleasant encounter with his unusual talent, more intimate and immediate than usual, and as such most welcome.

AL DI MEOLA ~ WORLD SINFONIA
EAR MUSIC 4029759153726 (Barcode: 4029759153726) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1990 Released: 2023

This is a reissue / remaster of an album by American guitarist / composer Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, recorded in 1990 and the first to feature the “World Sinfonia” moniker, which would become the name of the ensembles accompanying him on his future recordings. He is accompanied here by Argentinean bandoneonist Dino SaluzziFind albums by this artist, Armenian percussionist Arto TuncboyaciyanFind albums by this artist, American percussionist Gumbi OrtizFind albums by this artist and guitarist / luthier Chris CarringtonFind albums by this artist (born in Venezuela). The album presents ten tracks, all original compositions by Di Meola.

The album marks a dramatic change in Di Meola’s musical direction, switching exclusively to acoustic guitar and choosing Jazz-World Fusion as his main interest, often playing tribute to the legendary Argentinean bandoneonist / composer Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist.

The music is absolutely exquisite and Di Meola obviously embraces the World Music elements wholeheartedly. Despite the delicate, intimate and almost minimalist setting, the music is rich and embraces many melodic and rhythmic tapestries, which sound absolutely marvelously and lost nothing of their grace and elegance over time. It is one of my favorite Di Meola albums since the day of its release.

Overall, this is a beautiful and highly influential Jazz-World Fusion album, which presents Di Meola not only as a Master guitar player, but also as a great composer. Strongly influenced by South American elements, it is one of his best albums, and offers a brilliant voyage, which is everlastingly enchanting. For Jazz-World Fusion fans and guitar aficionados, this album is an absolute must!

This meeting of three guitar geniuses - Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist and Paco De LuciaFind albums by this artist - captured live, produced one of the most commercially successful jazz albums in all times. FUSION SYNDICATE ~ A SPEEDWAY ON SATURN`S RINGS
PURPLE PYRAMID 4022 (Barcode: 889466402227) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2012 - 2023 Released: 2023

This is the second album by the Fusion SyndicateFind albums by this artist, a brainchild of American guitarist / composer / producer Fernando PerdomoFind albums by this artist, who assembled a group of Fusion / Prog superstars to record (mostly) his compositions with various lineups, which change from track to track. The collective lineup includes guitarists Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist and Jan AkkermanFind albums by this artist, keyboardists Rick WakemanFind albums by this artist and Brian JacksonFind albums by this artist, bassist Jah WobbleFind albums by this artist and Alphonso JohnsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Chester ThompsonFind albums by this artist, among others. The album presents eight tracks recorded in late 2022 and early 2023.

The album also presents four bonus tracks produced and composed by bassist / composer Billy SherwoodFind albums by this artist, which originate from the debut eponymous album by Fusion Syndicate from 2012, which is difficult to find these days. It features such Fusion giants like bassist Jimmy HaslipFind albums by this artist, guitarist Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, violinist Jerry GoodmanFind albums by this artist, drummer Billy CobhamFind albums by this artist and others.

Although featuring excellent musicians, the album has nothing new to offer musically and has no coherent concept per se. There is plenty of excitement and excellent soloing by the participants, as expected, but sadly it confirms the notion that Fusion, following a relatively brief period of creativity and Artistic productivity during the Golden Decade (1965-1975) has been mostly dormant, if not dead since.

Overall, this is a well-played typical Fusion album, which adds nothing new to the genre’s illustrious past, but offers a pleasant listening experience to the genre’s hard to die fans.

UWE KROPINSKI ~ SOLO
EDEL CONTENT 4029759080497 (Barcode: 4029759080497) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1985 Released: 2012

This is a reissue (first time on CD) of the excellent debut album by the East German guitarist Uwe KropinskiFind albums by this artist, recorded solo on acoustic guitar. Kropinski performs six pieces, all or which are his original compositions.

The music is an amalgam of Jazz and ethnic influences, obviously Spanish but also many others, beautifully melodic and fascinating rhythmically. Kropinski displays amazing virtuosic abilities and technique, which combined with his compositions, turn this album into a delightful and passionate listening experience.

The overall atmosphere is somewhat similar to the Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist acoustic recordings, but of course is completely unique and should not be considered as an attempt to copy anybody else. The album is also beautifully recorded and is a true delight from start to finish for acoustic guitar fans, losing nothing of its splendor over time.

This album is another proof of the diversity and strength of the East German music scene, which against all odds managed to stay up to date with everything that happened musically behind the Iron curtain.

Side Note: As all the East European countries under the Socialist regime, East Germany, or DDR as it was known at the time, had only one state owned and controlled Music Company, which released most of its productions on the AmigaFind albums on this label label. Among the many Amiga releases the legendary "orange J" series was dedicated to Jazz recordings, many of which were licenses from the West, but others were original productions, mostly of Jazz made in DDR. Some of these releases, like the one described above, were absolute gems.

Following the unification of Germany, the Amiga albums disappeared from the face of the earth and only in 2012 a German label reissued 15 Amiga Jazz albums on CD. They are all worth checking out!

MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA ~ MAHAVISHNU
WOUNDED BIRD 5190 (Barcode: 664140519022) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1984 Released: 2002

7th album by Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, recorded almost 6 years after the last album recorded by MO Mk. III (which means this was MO Mk. IV). In the years that passed between these two incarnations of MO John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist recorded several superb solo albums as well as trio albums with Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist & Paco De LuciaFind albums by this artist and of course led the ShaktiFind albums by this artist World-Fusion ensemble – a truly astonishing body of music. The reincarnation of MO served as a project to take another look at the Fusion genre and reflect the changes that the genre went through. McLaughlin selected some of the best Fusion players for his group, with veteran Billy CobhamFind albums by this artist on drums, Swedish bass player Jonas HellborgFind albums by this artist (with whom he recorded several duo and trio albums later), and two excellent representatives of the second generation of US Fusion players: Bill EvansFind albums by this artist (the other Bill Evans) on sax and Mitchell FormanFind albums by this artist on keyboards. The music on this album is very different from what the first six MO albums presented. It is much more laid-back, relaxed, serene and cerebral. McLaughlin plays with layers of electronic sounds produced by his guitar synthesizer and Forman’s keyboards, with plenty of space for Evans to solo. The rhythm section is also much looser and provides just the right setting for this music. If you are just into the Fusion pyrotechnics as displayed on the early MO albums, this one will be a disappointment, but if you are into great music, you will truly appreciate this one. The fact that AtlanticFind albums on this label never reissued this album proves how blind and deaf the Majors are and I am grateful to Terry from Wounded BirdFind albums on this label to bring this superb music back to life.

JOHN MCLAUGHLIN / AL DI MEOLA / PACO DE LUCIA ~ PASSION, GRACE & FIRE

Two years after recording their immensely successful live album Friday Night In San FranciscoFind albums with this title, the three guitar geniuses - John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist and Paco De LuciaFind albums by this artist - gathered to record a studio album, which reflects again their supernatural ability to improvise together in both the duo and trio formats. One could hardly find a better description for this music than the title of this 1982 album, which says it all. Their ability to exchange hot licks, as well as compliment each other by providing elegant background for the respective solos is truly phenomenal. The music is entirely acoustic of course and it is all composed by the three participants. There is a definite influence of Spanish, Flamenco and Gypsy folk motifs, strong jazzy feel and incredible musicality. They truly play with pleasure to please the listener, who should be able to discover new layers of intricate phrases with each repeated listening. A true classic!

MACIEK PYSZ ~ INSIGHT
33 RECORDS 231 (Barcode: 5020883337319) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2013

This is one of those unexpected pleasant surprises that arrive in my mail box from time to time, which are not only musical delights but also have a personal aspect, closing one of the infinite connections woven during my life as a Jazz activist. Maciek PyszFind albums by this artist is a Polish guitarist / composer resident in London since 2003 and is considered as one of the most interesting upcoming players on the scene. His cohorts are Russian bassist Yuri GoloubevFind albums by this artist, a classically trained player living now in Milan, and Israeli drummer Asaf SirkisFind albums by this artist, also resident in London, considered as one of the best players around. Of course Sirkis is one of the many "kids on the block" that grew up under my wings and received their first recording opportunity on my record label, hence I consider him as one of my "musical children" spread all over the world.

The trio performs nine original compositions, all by Pysz (one co-composed with the Italian guitarist Gianluca CoronaFind albums by this artist), who was also in charge of the exquisite arrangements. The music is a wonderful amalgam of influences mixing Jazzy improvisations with multicultural backgrounds including Gypsy, Flamenco, Latin and Brazilian folklore and European Classical music. Rhythmic influences also touch upon Middle Eastern pulsations. Together these elements are wonderfully interwoven, producing a completely unique musical identity, which belongs to the guitar based Jazz-World Fusion universe pioneered by such luminaries as Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, Ralph TownerFind albums by this artist or John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, among others. Without any exaggeration, this music is every bit as good as the music created by these great Masters.

But the excellent compositions and arrangements are also accompanied by superb performances. All three players are obvious virtuosi, each capable of astounding performance, and when combined are capable of truly wondrous music making. Pysz has a superb technique but even more so a deep feeling. The acoustic / classical guitar laughs and weeps, switches between cheerful lightheadedness and moody melancholy. The single notes and the chords are always in harmonious relation to each other and to the two other musicians. Goloubev is already quite famous as a classical player, but his performances here show that his feel and respect for Jazz are of no lesser magnitude. Sirkis, who "holds his horses" and intelligently fits his percussive magic to the delicate acoustic surroundings, simply binds the entire musical experience into a complete and perfect artistic message.

As if all the above was not enough, the album is also superbly recorded, with an astonishing sonic ambience and dynamics of the highest quality, which turns the experience of listening to the music into a true delight. This is obviously "guitar heaven" for guitar buffs, but any true music connoisseur should find this album extraordinary in every sense. Wholeheartedly recommended!

The 2CD album presents ten tracks, all composed by the trio members, with one composition repeated twice and featuring Jamaican pianist Monty AlexanderFind albums by this artist on one of the versions. Three of the tracks are solo performances, one by each member of the trio. This album was recorded a year before the trio recorded their eponymous, and so far only studio album. This live recording offers a stunning sound quality.

The music is everything one might expect from these three instrumental virtuosi, who manage to avoid turning this into a competition and rather display a wonderful teamwork using their respective strengths the best possible way.

The music spans a wide range of stylistic explorations, but is mostly dominated by the Jazz-World Fusion influences, which Al Di Meola pursued predominantly at the time and his partners followed contentedly.

Overall, this is a breathtaking display of the instrumental abilities of three giant musicians, who complement each other wonderfully herein. The perform beautiful music and the album is not surprisingly full of pyrotechnical neck-breaking displays of instrumental virtuosity. Personally I prefer this live album to the studio album, which followed, as the live electric atmosphere present on this recording is simply electrifying, acoustically ;)

Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007

4th album by Japanese keyboards player Hiromi UeharaFind albums by this artist firmly establishes her position as one of the brightest stars of contemporary jazz. Her amazing compositions and breathtaking virtuosity are constant factors present on all of hers albums so far, which of course makes it really easy to decide if one should get anything she puts her name to. Although deeply rooted in jazz, on this album Hiromi takes a step towards Fusion by expanding her regular trio into a quartet with the addition of superb guitarist David FiuczynskiFind albums by this artist. Being a strong soloist, Fiuczynski adds another dimension to the music and the fiery exchanges between his guitar and Hiromi’s keyboards bring back fond memories of similar exchanges between Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist in Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist. But there is plenty of Hiromi playing the acoustic piano here to satisfy the more jazz oriented folks as well, so whichever way you look at this album it’s a gem. Anybody who already owns the previous Hiromi’s album will get this for sure but I urge people who are not familiar with her art to try her out – most of the people who listened to my (wholehearted) recommendations got hooked helplessly. "GoFind albums with this title" is a large scale suite, combining many musical elements, from Classical to Jazz, World Music and Rock. STOMU YAMASH`TA ~ GO… LIVE FROM PARIS
ESOTERIC 2086 (Barcode: 5013929718623) ~ JAPAN ~ Progressive Rock

Following the studio recording of the epic work "GoFind albums with this title" by the Japanese percussionist / composer Stomu Yamash`taFind albums by this artist, the same cast of musicians embarked on a tour, performing the music live. The Paris performance was captured on tape and later released as a double LP, released here on single CD. In many respects the live recording is by far superior to the studio version, easily explained by the lack of time limitations and other constrains present in the studio. The soloists (and especially Di Meola, whose playing is truly inspired and Winwood, whose vocals soared that night) can stretch almost at will and considering the strength of the participating musicians they always receive a sympathetic and masterly support. The orchestral arrangements being replaced by synthesizer work also take off some of the studio version rigidity. In short this is one hell of a concert, one of those once-in-a-lifetime special nights. If you like the studio version of "Go", this is a must, if you didn´t, you still might find this to be great after all. Definitely worth trying out!
