GEORGE DUKE ~ MY SOUL–THE COMPLETE MPS FUSION RECORDINGS(MOST PERFECT SOUND EDITION)
MPS 751504 (Barcode: 602517515048) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1971 - 1976 Released: 2008

US keyboardist George DukeFind albums by this artist is one of the most colorful and versatile figures on the Jazz-Rock Fusion scene. His career stretches ways back to the mid-1960s and lasts to this very day. Starting as a classic Jazz pianist, Duke gradually moved from straightforward Jazz into Jazz-Rock Fusion, abandoning the acoustic piano in favor of the electric one and later adding a myriad of synthesizers to his workshop. His stints with Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist (twice) and Cannonball AdderleyFind albums by this artist (where he replaced Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist) in his formative years influenced his musical path tremendously and it was Zappa who pushed him towards using synthesizers and exploring new musical vistas.

Duke’s development and gradual change of style and musical vocabulary was brilliantly captured on his recordings for the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label. His connection with MPS was quite accidental and recording for a small European label was quite unusual for US Artists at the time, but in retrospect Duke couldn’t have made a better decision, as the label allowed him total artistic freedom, which was almost impossible to achieve on the US scene. He recorded a total of nine albums for MPS, seven of which are collected in this superb Box Set.

His first recording for MPS dating from 1966 was still very much a classic Jazz affair, which stylistically does not belong to his Fusion period, was not included here (perhaps a correct decision as far as the title goes, but as it is still unavailable on CD, it would be nice to have it reissued as well). The last recording for MPS, a solo keyboards project, is also omitted, for contractual bullshit reasons, as it caused a big legal dispute at the time, with Duke changing labels from MPS to EpicFind albums on this label. That album was reissued as “The 1976 Solo Keyboard AlbumFind albums with this title” on the Wounded BirdFind albums on this label label (the original MPS title was “The DreamFind albums with this title”).

However, the remaining seven albums (“SolusFind albums with this title” and “The Inner SourceFind albums with this title”, which were released together as a double LP, “Faces In ReflectionFind albums with this title”, “FeelFind albums with this title”, “I Love The Blues, She Heard Me CryFind albums with this title”, “The Aura Will PrevailFind albums with this title” and “Liberated FantasiesFind albums with this title”) recorded between April 1971 and January 1976 are included in their entirety, beautifully remastered. These four CDs include such an immense amount of music, which is so versatile stylistically and conceptually, that it constitutes a tremendous and essential document of the era.

As far as Duke’s playing and even more importantly his compositional skills, this is a beautiful portrait of an Artist, which every fan and music lover will cherish. The players on the sessions present here constitute a long list of some of the best Jazz and Fusion musicians active at the time, too long to be included here. For the inquisitive listeners let me just mention that even Frank Zappa is present (albeit incognito) on two tracks, as are many members of his Mothers Of InventionFind albums by this artist. There is something for everyone here and overall this Box Set is one unadulterated, intense plateful of fun and musical ingenuity. Absolutely essential!
Side Note
The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.

In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.

Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.

In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.

Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

PASSPORT ~ CROSS-COLLATERAL
WOUNDED BIRD 0107 (Barcode: 664140010727) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2001

6th album by the brilliant German Jazz-Rock group PassportFind albums by this artist, very similar to its predecessor. Same personell and the same typically European approach to fusion, with brilliant compositions and delicate, yet sophisticated and mind-blowing instrumental delicacies. This music is totally uneffected by time and in fact perhaps even gets better with time passing by, as good wine. A must to any serious music lover.

FUNK FACTORY ~ FUNK FACTORY
WOUNDED BIRD 0116 (Barcode: 664140011625) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2007

1st and only album by a one-time recording project organized by the brilliant Polish Jazz musician Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist and his wife Urszula DudziakFind albums by this artist, following their move to the USA and after recording of several exquisite albums for the Columbia label. The album is to a large extent a cheek-in-tongue joke by Urbaniak in response to the "accusations" by his fellow American colleagues, that Eastern European musicians are not "funky". Here we have a proof that Urbaniak and his cohorts can play Funk as well as any American musician, and perhaps even better, as his Funk is so much more sophisticated and multilayered than anything else recorded in that style.

Together with Urbaniak and Dudziak a couple of two other talented Polish musicians also take part in this project: virtuoso keyboardist Wlodek GulgowskiFind albums by this artist and singer Bernard KafkaFind albums by this artist, founder and leader of the superb Polish vocal group NOVIFind albums by this artist. In addition to the four Poles, a sensational American rhythm section was assembled, with bassists Anthony JacksonFind albums by this artist and Tony LevinFind albums by this artist, drummers Steve GaddFind albums by this artist and Gerald BrownFind albums by this artist and guitarists Barry FinnertyFind albums by this artist and John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist. Urbaniak burns his electric violin with the usual passion and virtuosity and Dudziak performs magic with her voice. The music was all written by Urbaniak, Gulgowski and Kafka, so here we have Polish Funk, which funks away all that´s funky. Although completely obscure, this is a great album, which hopefully can now be discovered by a wider audience after being reissued on CD. A must for all Polish Jazz enthusiasts!

1st album by this magnificent guitar duo: American Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist and Belgian Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, both established virtuosi with impressive record, who cooperate here to combine their talents in order to create a whole, which is even greater than the sum of its parts. Although both guitarists are mostly known for their activity in Jazz-Rock Fusion, this album presents them in completely acoustic setting, exchanging riffs, chords and ideas. The result is a beautiful conversation of two Masters, both technically and aesthetically awe inspiring. The music on this album was mostly written by Catherine, but they also play one Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist composition and a striking version of a Django ReinhardtFind albums by this artist tune. 8th album by the brilliant German Jazz-Rock group PassportFind albums by this artist, still with the original quartet. Similar in style to the previous albums, with more great compositions and excellent playing. Passport`s ability to deliver new albums and keeping a consistent level of excellence was their trademark. PASSPORT ~ MAN IN THE MIRROR
WOUNDED BIRD 0144 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

1983 album. Same line-up as on the prevoius album and similar style, with good compositions and flawless performances. However, considering the musical climate of the 80`s, the fusion was running out of steam and record labels were unwilling to release albums in the genre. All this and Doldinger`s age in view, from now on future Passport albums will be few and far apart.

LENNY WHITE ~ STREAMLINE
WOUNDED BIRD 0164 ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

4th album from 1978. As it seemed impossible to make anything better then White`s previous album, he changed the direction again, going more into the funky groove, with some smokin` vocal numbers (one featuring queen of soul Chaka Khan). However there is still plenty of real instrumental fusion stuff, and some absolutely outstanding bass playing by the superb Marcus Miller.

WOUNDED BIRD 0173 (Barcode: 664140017320) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1978 - 1979 Released: 2005

4th and 5th albums (originally released on the AsylumFind albums on this label label) combined here as one set. By the end of the 1970s Jan HammerFind albums by this artist moved completely into rock and these two albums are his best achievements in that genre. He could still write excellent songs and as these two albums feature three very good vocalists: Colin HodgkinsonFind albums by this artist – also a great bass player (Back DoorFind albums by this artist, Brian AugerFind albums by this artist), Bob ChristiansonFind albums by this artist and Glenn BurtnickFind albums by this artist, the result was surprisingly good. Quite close to Prog, these two albums include excellent instrumental work by Hammer, who uses the electronic keyboards like a true virtuoso. Just listen to his interpretation of Jimi HendrixFind albums by this artist’ “Manic Depression” to appreciate his abilities. As these two albums were unavailable for ages, it’s good to seem them back in circulation. People who are not familiar with this music might be quite surprised listening to them now.

JOHN KLEMMER ~ FINESSE / MAGNIFICENT MADNESS
WOUNDED BIRD 0197 (Barcode: 664140019720) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1980 - 1983 Released: 2005

Brilliant American saxophonist John KlemmerFind albums by this artist is one of the most versatile and talented Jazz players in the last few decades. His initial influence was the saxophone legacy of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist and to this date he is one of the best post-Coltrane players around, but his career found him playing in many different settings ranging from Free-Jazz to Smooth-Jazz. However, regardless of the musical environment, Klemmer´s saxophone playing is always beyond reproach and his improvisational skills are breathtaking, as is his amazing tone on tenor saxophone and the echoplex electric saxophone, which he introduced into Jazz. He is also a brilliant composer and his lyrical melodies are among the finest out there. "FinesseFind albums with this title" was Klemmer´s 4th and last album for the ElektraFind albums on this label label and it comprises of his original compositions, played by a wonderful quintet with keyboardist Russell FerranteFind albums by this artist, bassist Bob MagnussonFind albums by this artist, drummer Roy McCurdyFind albums by this artist and percussionist Steve FormanFind albums by this artist. "Magnificent MadnessFind albums with this title" was his 1st album on Elektra and includes covers as well as his original compositions. Although on the lighter side of Jazz, these two albums include quite amazing musicianship and Klemmer´s saxophone sound can melt ice any time. Recommended to listeners, who enjoy good melodic Jazz, which does not compromise the music quality and does not cross over to elevator music.

LENNY WHITE ~ ATTITUDE
WOUNDED BIRD 0232 (Barcode: 664140023222) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1983 Released: 2005

6th album by one of the most versatile US drummers, who played in such different settings as Miles Davis (late 1960s), Return To Forever (mid 1970s) and a myriad of projects spanning everything between mainstream jazz, fusion and funk in later years. His early solo projects were all oriented towards Fusion, but he continuously moved from Fusion towards Funk / Soul, incorporating more vocals and commercial arrangements. Of course this does not mean that his music was bad, as it never was and a player of caliber had always something to offer. This album, although characterized by a commercial sound, presents some high quality Funk music with truly excellent rhythmic approach. The presence of the legendary bass player Marcus Miller turns this into a classic Funk that generation of players studied later on. Definitely on the lighter side of things, but still a damn good listen.

WOUNDED BIRD 0299 (Barcode: 664140029927) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2008

1st album by one of the most important European Jazz-Rock Fusion ensembles, German band PassportFind albums by this artist, founded and led by reedman / composer Klaus DoldingerFind albums by this artist. By the early 1970s the German Jazz scene was bursting with talent and excitement with the new generation of players slowly taking their place among the veteran musicians. The European Jazz, which went through a process of rapid development in the previous decade, freeing itself form the rigid constrains of American Jazz tradition, created a completely new universe of music. With the entry to the new decade many of the European musicians crossed over from modern and Free Jazz into Jazz-Rock Fusion, with s feverish rush of activity in that field. Passport was one of many German bands appearing for the first time on the scene at the time, but it proved to be one of the most inventive and in retrospect most influential band of the era, lasting for decades with many personnel changes, but always inventive and musically fulfilling. JERRY GOODMAN / JAN HAMMER ~ LIKE CHILDREN
WOUNDED BIRD 0430 (Barcode: 664140043022) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1974 Released: 2006

Only album by this duo, formed following the demise of John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist’s Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist Mk. I in 1973. Jerry GoodmanFind albums by this artist and Jan HammerFind albums by this artist were the founding members of MO and played on the seminal three first albums by the group. This album is quite different from the fiery pyrotechnics used in MO and concentrates on presenting a gentler and more personal side of both musicians. Hammer composed most of the music for this album (with Goodman contributing on three tracks), which varies a lot stylistically between Funk, Fusion and Progressive. Between the two of them they play a myriad of instruments, with Hammer handling all keyboards and percussion and Goodman playing electric and acoustic violins and guitars. Hammer shines on the moog synthesizer, his main solo instrument, and Goodman displays again his amazing violin technique, which resembles his work with FlockFind albums by this artist (before MO). The album lost none of its charm in time and is still a prime example of well-played and sophisticated Fusion music. Since Goodman’s recording heritage is rather sparse, it’s great to see this album back in circulation. Recommended!

JAN HAMMER ~ OH, YEAH?
WOUNDED BIRD 0437 (Barcode: 664140043725) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1976 Released: 2006

2nd album by keyboards wizard Jan HammerFind albums by this artist, best known from his stint with the original Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist. Born in Czechoslovakia, Hammer left his native country after the Soviet invasion in 1968 (same as many other prominent Czech musicians) and emigrated to the US, where he attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston. He first played jazz (for Sarah VaughanFind albums by this artist) but joined MO, as he was more interested in the Jazz-Rock Fusion, which exploded in the early 1970s. His memorable contributions to the MO sound are classics to this very day. After the demise of the original MO Hammer recorded an album with fellow ex-MO member Jerry GoodmanFind albums by this artist (Like ChildrenFind albums with this title) and a year later released his first solo album (The First Seven DaysFind albums with this title) and formed the Jan Hammer Band with which he performed extensively. On this album Hammer continues the musical direction set by his debut, which is basically a funkier and rockier version of Fusion. The band includes another talented US violin player Steven KindlerFind albums by this artist and percussionist David Earle JohnsonFind albums by this artist (with whom Hammer also recorded a duo album) and resembles at times the MO sound. The only disappointing thing is the (fortunately rare) usage of vocals, which although quite OK, contribute little to the otherwise solid album.

I thought that I remembered enjoying this album 20+ years ago, and the first track matched my memory (and Adam´s praise) but I have to say that when the vocals came in (and there are quite a few vocal tracks in different styles) that they seemed to me pretty cheesey and put the CD firmly on my list labelled "how do I get rid of these discs that I will never listen to again?"

He is also a brilliant composer and his lyrical melodies are among the finest out there. This was Klemmer´s 3rd album for the Elektra label and it is completely different from the other three albums he recorded for the label. Any solo instrumental album is a major challenge and sometimes the musician involved, regardless of his talent and virtuosity, is unable to produce an album´s worth of music, which keeps the listener interested. On this, his second solo saxophone effort, Klemmer is simply brilliant from start to finish and his improvisations are breathtaking. The superb tonal qualities of his instrument and the flow of the music, either lyrical or at faster-then-light speed is flawless. Klemmer comes back to the days when he was an avid Coltrane disciple and his excursions remind the Master´s greatest moments. The music, all composed by Klemmer, includes melodic themes of depth and beauty, which are great vehicles for his improvisations. There is one vocal track on the album, which might seem out of place for the Jazz buffs, but the rest of the album is all pure improvised Jazz. Highly recommended!

Another live recording of the superb Don Ellis Big Band, just a year after the momentous Fillmore show. The band went through some important changes in that year, with the Bulgarian pianist Milcho Leviev joining the ranks of the players and the addition of the string quartet to the band’s permanent personnel. Ellis wrote himself most of the material for this album, with arrangements done by some of the band members. The unusual rhythmic patterns are strongly present here with Leviev introducing the mesmerizing Balkan timing. This is Big Band music at its best: fresh, challenging and always full of surprising and often humorous moments. The music is still strong and the playing excellent, but it is obvious that there is no much future in this and the band is running out of steam, which of course is a great pity as Passport were definitely one of the best bands ever.

DAVE PIKE ~ JAZZ FOR THE JET SET
WOUNDED BIRD 1457 (Barcode: 664140145726) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1966 Released: 2006

Vibraphonist Dave PikeFind albums by this artist has been active on the US jazz scene since the mid-1950s, playing in a variety of bands. In the early 1960s Pike joined the Herbie MannFind albums by this artist band, where he stayed for several years, playing an amplified vibraphone (one of the first musicians to do so). After leaving Mann’s band he recorded a few albums (this being one of them) and in 1968 he left for Europe, where he stayed for several years leading the Dave Pike SetFind albums by this artist, which was one of the most advanced and sophisticated early jazz-rock ensembles. With the Set he recorded a series of brilliant albums for the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label (sadly mostly not available on CD), which featured the absolutely top European players at the time, including guitarist Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist and many more. In the mid-1970s Pike returned to the US, where he continued to perform and occasionally record. This album is quite unique in many ways: it was produced by Herbie Mann and features some of the best players on the scene, including Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist (plying the organ – the only time that happened!) and trumpeter Clark TerryFind albums by this artist. The material includes several original tunes (by Hancock and Pike) and lovely arrangements of great (then contemporary) Pop songs, creating one of the nicest ever jazz-pop albums (typical of the mid-1960s), with that incredible sound that makes my heart melt each time I hear it. Perhaps my nostalgia slightly clouds my judgment, but this is a most pleasant album, full of joy and naivete, so rare these days. Superb!

KEITH JARRETT ~ THE MOURNING OF A STAR
WOUNDED BIRD 1596 ~ USA ~ Jazz

After leaving Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett led two parallel groups - one in the US with the great Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and Dewey Redman and the other in Europe with Scandinavian players Jan Garbarek, Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen. The US group recorded a series if revolutionay and exciting albums starting in 1971, of which this is the first (as a trio). Jarrett was still developing and perfecting his most personal style and these recordings give a fascinating glimpse at that process.

KEITH JARRETT ~ BIRTH
WOUNDED BIRD 1612 ~ USA ~ Jazz

Originating from the same session as `The Mourning of a Star`, this quartet recording presents the birth of Jarrett`s US group, which continued to record some amazing music in years to come. There is much experimentation here, with musicians switching instruments and playing quite freely, but the genious is eveident already. Challenging, but intellectually rewarding, this is a piece of jazz history.

DON ELLIS ~ CONNECTION
WOUNDED BIRD 1766 (Barcode: 664140176621) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2005

This album is quite different from the extraordinary Don Ellis Big Band live albums. Recorded in studio it enables (and produced by no other than the legendary Teo Macero of Miles Davis fame) Ellis to emphasize the more intricate arranging tricks (his own and some guest arrangers like Dick Halligan – ex-BS&T), which are virtually impossible to perform live. The album includes eleven shorter tunes, mostly Ellis unusual (and often humorous) treatment of jazz, pop and even Prog songs (Roundabout by Yes and Conquistador by Procol Harum). Exploiting the exceptional skills of his band members, which include the brilliant pianist Milcho Leviev, Ellis creates a charming collection of tunes, which lost nothing of its originality and interest over the years and remains a classic Big Band album. The album also includes the theme Ellis wrote for the classic thriller “The French Connection”, which gave the album its title.

In spite of the negative (to say the least) critics and dwindling sales, BS&T were till a superb group, which was completely unparalleled in their ability to mix rock rhythms with intricate jazzy arrangements and deliver time after time some uplifting and spirited performances. Fisher handles the vocals very well and although his vocal abilities lack the magic of David’s timbre, he handles the songs with taste and feeling. Swedish guitarist Georg WadeniusFind albums by this artist adds a rockier dimension and the brass players kick ass as usual. Call me a sucker, but I just love this stuff. When this little gem was finally released by the adventurous VortexFind albums on this label label (a subsidiary of AtlanticFind albums on this label), after being recorded a few years earlier, US vibraphonist Dave PikeFind albums by this artist had already moved to Europe, following the footsteps of many US Jazz players who felt stifled by the local scene, which was nonresponsive to innovation and outright hostile to forward musical ideas. In Europe Pike formed the wonderful Dave Pike SetFind albums by this artist and recorded a series of superb albums for the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label. This is the last album he recorded before leaving for Europe and it is weird in every sense as much as it is revolutionary. The use of electronic effects and studio trickery, overlaid on top of straightforward (more or less) Jazz playing was surely quite innovative at the time. He assembled a wonderful team of musicians with saxophonist Lee KonitzFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / clarinetist Eddie DanielsFind albums by this artist, pianist Don FriedmanFind albums by this artist, bassist Chuck IsraelFind albums by this artist and drummer Arnie WiseFind albums by this artist. Recorded: 1996 Released: 2006

2nd album by the Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist trio, which includes two jazz giants: Bill FrisellFind albums by this artist on guitar and Charlie HadenFind albums by this artist on bass. Baker is of course mostly known as a rock superstar for his role in the legendary CreamFind albums by this artist (also a drums / bass / guitar trio), but since the 1990s he returned to active duty as a jazz drummer, with a variety of projects in the jazz realm, this trio being one of them. Of course Baker always was a jazz drummer, long before he played for rock audiences. His work with the Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist in the early / mid 1960s is just one of the manifestations of his jazz background, but it even goes far back to the 1950s UK trad bands. Baker was always one of the most original drummers and generations of drummers studied his every beat. He is heavily influenced by African rhythms and he played and studied African percussion for many years. All this adds up to make him a most atypical jazz drummer, immediately distinguishable from any of his peers. The sound and the music are quite different from most guitar trios, to some extent due to Baker’s unusual approach to drums, but also due to the choice of the material. Only two standards (by Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist and Charlie ParkerFind albums by this artist) are present, all the rest of the music was penned by the trio members. The level is of course none less than exceptional, only to be expected from such distinguished players. This is a very interesting and different jazz album, worthy of investigation.

These albums were recorded while Purim was at the peak of her popularity in the US, and she flirts with some Smooth Jazz and Latin Jazz material, in addition to her usual Brazilian Jazz, but they are nevertheless still absolutely gorgeous. Some of the best US Jazz musicians at the time accompany her on these albums, including of course her husband drummer / percussionist Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, bassist Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist, keyboardists George DukeFind albums by this artist and Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist and numerous others.

CD2 includes the album “Nothing Will Be As It Was…TomorrowFind albums with this title”, from 1977, which presents eight tracks, and the album “Carry OnFind albums with this title”, from 1979, which presents ten tracks.

To this very day Purim is one of the most important Jazz vocalist of all time, a pioneer of the Brazilian Jazz wave that swept the world in the 1970s and a very gifted songwriter as well. She is one of my favorite vocalists and I am incredibly happy to have had the opportunity to meet her several times.

Overall, these are excellent vocal Jazz / Jazz-World Fusion albums, which are absolutely an essential addition to every Vocal Jazz collection and which lost absolutely nothing of their brilliance over time. The reissue is a most welcomed opportunity to grab a copy of the them. Purim’s many followers need no encouragement of course and many young Jazz vocalists can learn a lot from these recordings. Sublime stuff!

DON ELLIS ~ AT FILLMORE
WOUNDED BIRD 3024 (Barcode: 664140302426) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2005

For just about a decade (the Golden Decade as a matter of fact 1965-1975) trumpeter Don Ellis led one of the most sensational jazz Big Bands in history. A visionary musician, composer, arranger and bandleader, Ellis took the Big Band vehicle places it never went before and probably was never intended to go beforehand. His Big Band was unusual in every respect, as it included an extended brass section, rhythm section with two or even three drummers and bass players, a string section and a score of electronic devices like the ring modulator. The sound of the band in full swing was overwhelming and breathtaking, especially when it performed some of the more wacky music with strange time signatures like 5/4 or 15/16. Ellis was open to musical influences from all over the globe and when the brilliant Bulgarian pianist Milcho Leviev joined the band soon after arriving in the US, the Balkan rhythmic patters soon became also part of the regular repertoire. Ellis suffered a heart attack in the mid 1970s and died untimely in 1978, a great loss to the world of jazz and music in general. This album presents the Don Ellis Big Band at its peak, recorded in 1970 at the Fillmore West. A superb set of compositions and arrangements suit the abilities of the players perfectly and this music is so powerful and sophisticated that no serious jazz lover should ever consider ignoring it. A few words about the Fillmore: Fillmore’s (East and West) owner Bill Graham was a man of great musical taste and open mind. He booked some of the most popular acts of the time as well as some of the most obscure ones and what’s even more important he disregarded genres completely, giving Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix the same amount of respect and hospitality. We should cherish his memory for organizing so many of the momentous and historically important concerts at his venues, many of which turned out to be recorded for posterity.

DELANEY & BONNIE & FRIENDS ~ TO BONNIE FROM DELANEY
WOUNDED BIRD 326 (Barcode: 664140032620) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2016

This is fourth album by American singer / songwriter couple Delaney BramlettFind albums by this artist and Bonnie BramlettFind albums by this artist, known as Delaney & BonnieFind albums by this artist and later on as Delaney & Bonnie & FriendsFind albums by this artist. This album, their second release on AtcoFind albums on this label Records, was recorded and released in 1970 with a new version of "Friends", since the previous version of "Friends", which accompanied them on the live album "On Tour With Eric ClaptonFind albums with this title" was practically hijacked by Leon RussellFind albums by this artist to accompany Joe CockerFind albums by this artist on his US 1970 tour, which produced the legendary "Mad Dogs & EnglishmenFind albums with this title" album. The new "Friends" retained only keyboardist Bobby WhitlockFind albums by this artist from the previous band, but offered an impressive list of players, such as guitarists Duane AllmanFind albums by this artist (who played slide guitar) and Charlie FreemanFind albums by this artist and many others, including the Memphis HornsFind albums by this artist brass section, which took part in the recording of their debut album "HomeFind albums with this title". The album presents twelve songs, which are the usual mixture of Bramletts´ originals and Rock / Rhythm And Blues classics.

Musically the album presents the already established Delaney & Bonnie formula, mixing Rhythm And Blues, Soul and Country music with Rock instrumentation and featuring the duo´s vocal harmonies and Bonnie´s heartwrenching vocal pyrotechnics. Combined with superb instrumental work by the "Friends", the music is full of energy and genuine enthusiasm spiced with talent and good taste, which at that time was still around.

In spite of the success of the preceding live album, this album did not come near to the same level of success and remained highly regarded by some critics and Delaney & Bonnie devotees, but in retrospect disappeared into oblivion, which is a great pity as the music it offered was excellent all through and certainly worth being remembered. On the other hand considering the quality of music that was being produced at an incredible rate at the time, many classic Rock albums shared the faith of this one.

It is great to see that the album is available on CD thanks to the outstanding work by the Wounded BirdFind albums on this label Records reissue label, which means it can be enjoyed by people who still remember it when it happened in real time as well as being (hopefully) discovered by some younger listeners. Wholeheartedly recommended!

WYNTON MARSALIS ~ CITI MOVEMENT
WOUNDED BIRD 3324 (Barcode: 664140332423) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1993 Released: 2008

This breathtakingly beautiful album is not only one of best works to date by trumpeter / composer Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist, but also one of the best Jazz recordings of the 1990s and a masterpiece of the genre. Performed by the Marsalis septet, which included trombonist Wycliffe GordonFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Wes AndersonFind albums by this artist and Todd WilliamsFind albums by this artist, pianist Eric ReedFind albums by this artist, bassist Reginald VealFind albums by this artist and drummer Herlin RileyFind albums by this artist, this immensely complex body of music was composed as the score for the ballet "Griot New York". The double album includes three musical suites, each of these split into several subsections. In many respects this recording is a culmination of the Marsalis´ career up to that moment as a player, bandleader and most of all as a composer and arranger. The music encompasses a wide stylistic range, covering all subgenres of classic Jazz, from New Orleans, Swing, Bebop and Hard Bop, Modal music and even traces of 1960s Avant-Garde. Well over two hours long, the album includes a myriad of themes and melodies, flowing over ever changing rhythmic patterns and expressing different moods. The orchestration allows for dynamic fluctuations, whereas some fragments are performed by solo piano and others feature the full power of the ensemble with the horns screaming at full blast. Although there are plenty of inspired solos, the music is obviously intended to be in the centre of the listener´s attention, rather than the abilities of the individual performers. With this album Marsalis achieved finally the status of a brilliant composer, which complimented his virtuosic ability as a player, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is much more than a "pretty face" hyped by his label´s PR machine. This album is way more than just a platter with some music on it – it is a sublime lesson in Jazz history and essence, proving the genre´s noble status as intelligent and highly creative Art Form. In times when music is being whored and presented as a worthless mass product for imbeciles, this gem serves as a beacon showing the path for true music. Absolutely essential!

BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS ~ NEW CITY
WOUNDED BIRD 3484 (Barcode: 664140348424) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2005

8th album by BS&T, which marks the triumphant return of David Clayton-Thomas as the lead singer, following his failure to launch a successful solo career. David’s extraordinary and powerful voice was always the ideal counterpart to the band’s sound and his return brings the band instantly to the level of former grandeur. His ability to sing ballads and bluesy rockers with the same level of confidence uplifts the band’s overall performance significantly and as a result this album sounds every bit as strong as the earlier ones David took part in. To me the album sounds as great today as it did when I first heard it over 30 years ago and it is a godsend to have it available again. If you like the first four BS&T albums, you must have this one as well.

MICHAL URBANIAK ~ FUSION III
WOUNDED BIRD 3542 (Barcode: 664140354227) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2012

This is a reissue of the third (and last) US album by Polish Jazz violinist / composer Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist, released originally on the ColumbiaFind albums on this label label in 1975. In retrospect it is also one of the best Fusion albums ever recorded on this planet. Urbaniak, a veteran of the Polish Jazz scene, first came to prominence as the member of the legendary groups led by the Godfather of Polish Jazz, pianist / composer Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist. While with Komeda, Urbaniak played the saxophone and switched to violin only after founding his own group in the late 1960s, when he also changed his musical direction from Modern / Free Jazz to Fusion, inspired by the groundbreaking innovations created at the time by Miles DavisFind albums by this artist.

In his group he included his wife, the extraordinary singer Urszula DudziakFind albums by this artist and together they quickly developed a completely unique type of Fusion, which was light years ahead of anything else happening in that genre at the time anywhere in the world. Mixing Jazz, Rock, Folklore and Avant-Garde vocals, they established a completely new approach to composition and multilayered complexity, as documented on the two albums the group recorded as part of the legendary "Polish Jazz" series of albums, which was simply brilliant.

Frustrated by the state of affairs in his country, which suffered under a Socialist Regime and harsh economic conditions, Urbaniak, like most of his colleagues, constantly looked for an opportunity to leave Poland and establish a career behind the Iron Curtain. He managed initially to record a couple of albums in West Germany for the SpiegeleiFind albums on this label label, but the real break came when Columbia offered him a recording deal. He and his wife left Poland and settled in the USA, as did several other Polish Jazz musicians at the time, like his ex group member pianist / composer Adam MakowiczFind albums by this artist for example.

The three albums Urbaniak recorded for Columbia (and several more for other US labels, especially the dazzling "Funk FactoryFind albums with this title" album recorded shortly after this one and also reissued on Wounded BirdFind albums on this label) were outstanding and simply much better than anything the local scene could muster, but unfortunately Urbaniak´s US career never really took off, same as the careers of all other Polish Jazz musicians who tried to make it there, in spite of their immense talents. The reason was simply the narrow-mindedness of the US Jazz community (listeners and critics alike), which considered Jazz to be exclusively an American Art Form and failed to recognize anything originating outside of the US as artistically valid and meaningful, even if it hit them in the face.

On this album Urbaniak is accompanied by top US Fusion players like guitarist John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist, bassist Anthony JacksonFind albums by this artist and drummer Steve GaddFind albums by this artist, as well as Polish compatriot keyboardist Wlodek GulgowskiFind albums by this artist. Guitarist Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist guests on one track, guitarist Joe CaroFind albums by this artist guests on another and Polish vocalist Bernard KafkaFind albums by this artist guests on yet another track. Drummer Gerald BrownFind albums by this artist replaces Gadd on two tracks. Dudziak´s vocals are simply out of this world and alone are worth listening to this album repeatedly.

Urbaniak wrote almost all the dazzling music except for three tracks: a Dudziak improvisation, a superb composition by Polish saxophonist Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist, which fits this album´s mood like a glove and one tune by Gulgowski.

As already said, this is timeless, heavenly, unparalleled music, which I´ve been listening to in the last almost 40 years without any trace of getting tired by it any time soon. This is an absolutely essential Fusion music, and anybody who has not heard this music does not know the true meaning of Fusion. God bless Wounded Bird for finally releasing this divine album on CD!

EARTH OPERA ~ EARTH OPERA

1st album from 1968. Earth Opera were one of those obscure US proto-prog bands that made a couple of great albums and disappeared. 2nd album. Slightly different and more `organized` then the debut album, this one is also a better of the two. Great tunes and some excellent playing make it one of the most memorable recordings of the era. The 10+ minutes long title song is a good example of early Prog, with convoluted themes and long solos. Almost forgotten, but revived on this reissue, some great music that survived the recycle bin.

Other musicians playing on the album included percussionist David Earle JohnsonFind albums by this artist, drummers Lenny WhiteFind albums by this artist and Gerry BrownFind albums by this artist, electric bassist Francisco CentenoFind albums by this artist and a couple of others. The album presents ten tracks, seven of which were composed by Vitous, two by Jakubovic and one co-composed by them both.

This is relatively a little known album by Vitous, despite the fact that it is one of his most interesting recordings, mixing elements of Fusion and World Music. The superb team of international musicians, and especially the presence of Rimona Francis and Jaroslav Jakubovic, make it completely unique in Vitous’ recording legacy.

Overall, it is great to have this superb album on CD, and Weather Report fans should grab a copy instantly, before it disappears from the market like all other great reissues. I have no idea how I missed it till now?

BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS ~ MORE THAN EVER
WOUNDED BIRD 4233 (Barcode: 664140423329) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1976 Released: 2003

9th album by BS&T, which was the last studio album they recorded for Columbia (the label released some live recordings years later). The title is quite ominous, as this is their best effort of the later years, every bit as strong as the early albums and blessed with the same characteristics – incredible vocals, clever arrangements, superb playing and great tunes. Unfortunately for the band their fate was sealed by that time and soon after they were no more. Although David Clayton-Thomas carries the BS&T name to this very day and some albums were recorded in the last 30 years, the original 9 Columbia albums are their true legacy to be remembered and cherished for eternity. They brought me many happy moments in the years that passed and I hope some of you will experience the same with this music.

WYNTON MARSALIS ~ J MOOD
WOUNDED BIRD 4308 (Barcode: 664140430822) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1986 Released: 2007

Following the departure of saxophonist Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist tightened his group into a quartet. The decision at the time not to replace Branford with another saxophonist and create a trumpet quartet, seemingly a more limited musical vehicle, was a completely conscious one and as far as Wynton was concerned he needed to concentrate the attention totally on his performances, polishing his technique and pushing his skills as player and composer beyond anything previously witnessed. The quartet with excellent new pianist Marcus RobertsFind albums by this artist, bassist Robert HurstFind albums by this artist and drummer Jeff WattsFind albums by this artist became an incredibly tight unit, able to deliver music of the highest quality and always challenging the listener with its virtuosity and intelligence. Wynton´s compositions became more flexible and presented a wider scope of emotional delivery. This album presents a gentler, more lyrical Wynton, playing mostly his original compositions, most of which are slow tempo ballads. The relaxed and almost lush atmosphere of the music brings up gentle memories of some of the early Miles DavisFind albums by this artist work, but Wynton plays more around with the sound as opposed to Miles dance with timing. The rhythm section is simply perfect. Roberts arises as one of the greatest pianist of the era, which he later proved time after time on his solo recordings, delivering incredible solos and superb accompaniment. Hurst and Watts keep the timing like an atomic clock, but allow enough of creative delivery to keep the music interesting not only on the melodic level, but on the rhythmic level as well. Overall this is a "perfect" Jazz album in every sense – everything is just right on and everything clicks in perfect harmony. Although rarely mentioned as a classic Jazz recording, perhaps due to the fact that it lacks the groundbreaking element of radical innovation, nevertheless this is a Classic (with a capital C), worthy of a honorable place in any serious Jazz collection.

WYNTON MARSALIS ~ LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY
WOUNDED BIRD 4675 (Barcode: 664140467521) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1986 Released: 2007

Recorded live during a couple of nights at the Washington, D.C. club Blues Alley, this album captures 25 years old trumpeter / composer / bandleader Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist and his quartet doing their thing. Marsalis was already a "living legend", after spending the last half decade in the epicenter of public (Jazz and otherwise) eye. Behind him a series of Jazz and Classical Music recordings, received with almost universal applause and a long string of standing ovations at clubs and concert halls, which fallowed his live appearances. It was time to share the excitement of a live performance with a wider audience via a live recording and perhaps prove once and for all that the "living legend" status was not hype, but was based on solid grounds. The quartet, which earlier that year recorded the splendid "J MoodFind albums with this title" album, consisted of Marsalis, pianist Marcus RobertsFind albums by this artist, bassist Robert HurstFind albums by this artist and drummer Jeff WattsFind albums by this artist. The double album presents the music at the natural order of performance (with obvious editing), with each of the two records covering a separate night, two sets each night. This results in some of the tunes to be repeated twice, which of course is highly educational, as the performances are completely different, as appropriate for Jazz. The music, mostly written by Marsalis, with a few standards included as well, is mostly up tempo, which suits better a live performance situation and perhaps purposely allows the leader to "show off", proving his point. Regardless of the background information, hidden agendas and other less relevant factors, the music captured on this album is absolutely outstanding, turning it into one of the best live Jazz albums ever recorded. Wynton plays like a Greek God, with flow, technique, sound and virtuosity unparalleled by any of his peers, hitting the high register with might and sustain worthy of Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist. The pianist delivers incredible solos, full of sublime contents both lyrically and rhythmically and the bass / drums backbone drives the music at a neck-breaking speed with elegance and zest. Whatever one might think of Wynton Marsalis as a person becomes completely irrelevant in view of the music presented here – he is a phenomenal performer and a great asset to the music, which really is all that matters. Absolutely essential piece of music!

JAN HAMMER ~ MELODIES
WOUNDED BIRD 5003 (Barcode: 664140500327) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1977 Released: 2005

3rd album and the last released as under the Jan HammerFind albums by this artist Group flag. With time Hammer gets completely disassociated with the jazz and fusion elements and moves steadily towards rock. This album marks the transition very clearly, with some fusion elements still there (especially in the instrumental passages), but rhythmically the music is all funk. Hammer’s fusion fans were of course devastated watching him deserting the genre he so excelled in, but Hammer was determined to move on. Therefore it would be unfair to judge this album from the fusion perspective. As a funk album this is still a very good album by any parameter. The melodies are well written, the rhythmic part is as funky as they get and even the vocals (fortunately Hammer does not attempt to sing by himself and leaves the job to people who can sing) are more than adequate. Hammer can still play the hell out of his keyboards, making them sound more and more like a guitar. Worth investigating.

WYNTON MARSALIS ~ THE MAJESTY OF THE BLUES
WOUNDED BIRD 5091 (Barcode: 664140509122) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1989 Released: 2007

Following the initial period of intense search of his own musical identity, which lasted for about five years, trumpeter / composer Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist switched gears into the next phase of his illustrious career. The metamorphosis was slow and gradual, but the direction and the ultimate goal were pretty clear from the very early stages. Marsalis decided to treat his relationship with music not as a profession, where the most important facet of a musician is his skill and power of expression (or improvisational ability in Jazz), but rather as an almost messianic quest to turn music into a total art form, emphasizing its historical, philosophical, aesthetical, social and even political aspects. His albums, and often album cycles, would be much more that a series of sounds captured for posterity in a recording studio – they would become conceptual messages, in which the music would be just one layer of the total memorandum he wanted to communicate and get across, in order to educate, influence and often even preach. It didn´t take long for the music critics and later on Jazz audiences as well to start giving Marsalis a "funny" look, and later on commence a direct assault of disapproval and personal harassment. Prophets and visionaries have always suffered from public displeasure since the early days of human history, a phenomenon repeating itself time after time. This superb album is the first significant example of the "new" Marsalis. Completely emancipated from the Miles Davis complex, which haunted him from day one, he changed his relationship with the music and his instrument. From now on he was about to immerse into the roots of Jazz and present the history of the music, revitalized and interpreted his way, and where to find a better starting point than the Blues. Taking a trip back to his roots and origins, Marsalis creates a tribute to New Orleans, the cradle of Jazz. In order to express his musical ideas he realizes that he needs a larger ensemble to express his new musical vistas and therefore the quartet he used up to this point is expanded to a sextet (on this album) and soon after into a septet (a classic Jazz lineup), which would be his main vehicle for many years subsequently. The sextet includes Marsalis, saxophonists Todd WilliamsFind albums by this artist and Wes AndersonFind albums by this artist, pianist Marcus RobertsFind albums by this artist, bassist Reginald VealFind albums by this artist and drummer Herlin RileyFind albums by this artist. The album presents two separate music cycles: the first a recording by the sextet, playing music written by Marsalis, which is a modern version of early New Orleans Jazz, the second, called "The New Orleans Function" is performed by a sextet comprising of Marsalis and five veteran New Orleans musicians, again performing music written by him. The most unusual piece of the album is a lengthy sermon, delivered passionately over a musical background, lamenting the fate of the Blues in modern times (and clearly easily applicable to Jazz in general, or even all music or all culture). The sermon was written by journalist Stanley CrouchFind albums by this artist, who was a heated Marsalis supporter from day one and part of ColumbiaFind albums on this label´s PR machine promoting Marsalis to the status of a superstar. His somewhat "overheated" (read pompous) style turned out to be one of the factors, which led to the public "mutiny" against Marsalis´ domination of the Jazz scene. But disregarding the above, the sermon, obviously expressing Marsalis´ views at the time, is completely in par with the concept of this album and plays a vital role in expressing the ideology behind it. The entire strength and superb quality of the album is remarkable and a true work of art. The New Orleans Jazz is revitalized and presented in its full glory, placing this exquisite music back on the center stage after being almost completely forgotten and abandoned, except for a miniscule community of musicians and fans. Marsalis´ ability to love, understand and convey the roots of Jazz is a rare gift, and the Jazz fans from this album on will be exposed to more of the forgotten Jazz treasures thanks to his consistent effort to uncover them. Brilliant piece of music and an essential listening experience!

The reincarnation of MO served as a project to take another look at the Fusion genre and reflect the changes that the genre went through. McLaughlin selected some of the best Fusion players for his group, with veteran Billy CobhamFind albums by this artist on drums, Swedish bass player Jonas HellborgFind albums by this artist (with whom he recorded several duo and trio albums later), and two excellent representatives of the second generation of US Fusion players: Bill EvansFind albums by this artist (the other Bill Evans) on sax and Mitchell FormanFind albums by this artist on keyboards. The music on this album is very different from what the first six MO albums presented. It is much more laid-back, relaxed, serene and cerebral. McLaughlin plays with layers of electronic sounds produced by his guitar synthesizer and Forman’s keyboards, with plenty of space for Evans to solo. The rhythm section is also much looser and provides just the right setting for this music. If you are just into the Fusion pyrotechnics as displayed on the early MO albums, this one will be a disappointment, but if you are into great music, you will truly appreciate this one. The fact that AtlanticFind albums on this label never reissued this album proves how blind and deaf the Majors are and I am grateful to Terry from Wounded BirdFind albums on this label to bring this superb music back to life.

DON ELLIS ~ PIECES OF EIGHT
WOUNDED BIRD 6000 (Barcode: 664140600027) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2006

Sensational reissue of a live recording by the Don Ellis Octet, which was available earlier only partially and is now restored to its full glory with almost an hour of previously unheard music. The album was recorded while Ellis thought a jazz course at the UCLA and features an ad hoc band assembled by him for this one time performance. However, in spite of the haphazard circumstances, the octet performs some first class music, composed mostly by Ellis (with a couple of standards and two tunes by saxophonist Tom Scott being the only exceptions). This is an extraordinary opportunity to hear the brilliant trumpet work by Ellis, which was much subdued when he led his famous Big Band. All band members play some great solos here and the ensemble performance is truly exceptional, which considering the circumstances, proves the incredible professionally of these players. Don’s fascination with world music is already evident here, although in subtle undertones. A beautiful jazz album, full of energy and joy and very highly recommended to all jazz buffs!

IDES OF MARCH ~ FRIENDLY STRANGERS: THE WARNER BROS. RECORDINGS
WOUNDED BIRD 6007 (Barcode: 664140600720) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1969 - 1971 Released: 2018

This is a remastered / expanded reissue of the entire material recorded by the American Rock / Brass Rock band Ides Of MarchFind albums by this artist, which includes their first two albums “VehicleFind albums with this title” and “Common BondFind albums with this title” and numerous singles released on Warner Bros.Find albums on this label Records. Fronted by a charismatic vocalist / songwriter Jim PeterikFind albums by this artist, who wrote most of the band’s material, the band included a brass section, which gave them the Brass Rock sound. Some of the material uses orchestral arrangements. Following the first two albums, Ides Of March released two additional albums on RCAFind albums on this label and disbanded in 1973, but reunited in 1990 and are still active today.

The music is a mixture of Pop, Rock and Brass Rock, with truly excellent songs by Peterik, who has the ability to weave wonderfully melodic songs, often more ambitious than the usual Pop material, especially when arranged with extended Brass Rock attires. Although rarely mentioned today, these two early albums are a wonderful reminder of the incredible level of American musicianship at time.

Fans of early ChicagoFind albums by this artist and Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist albums should really enjoy this music, in all its splendor, which is completely absent on contemporary music scene.

Overall, this is a wonderful reminder of how American Rock music sounded by the late 1960s / early 1970s, with Brass Rock being one of its most ambitious manifestations. Since Brass Rock recordings are relatively uncommon, this reissue is definitely a splendid opportunity to revive an interest in the genre’s history. Wholeheartedly recommended!

RENAISSANCE ~ NOVELLA
WOUNDED BIRD 6024 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

8th album from 1977. Considered by some as the last of the great Renaissance albums, marking the end of the `golden` era of the group, which started with `Prologue` in 1972. Annie Haslam delivers her wonderful vocal parts with feeling and grace and the compositions bear a strong classical influence. A true gem and a must for all the fans of melodic, relaxed, sometimes melancholic Prog.

ROBIN TROWER ~ THE COMPLETE ATLANTIC RECORDINGS
WOUNDED BIRD 6033 (Barcode: 664140603325) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock

Recorded: 1988 - 1990 Released: 2020

This is a 2CD reissue of the 11th and 12th solo studio albums by the legendary British Rock guitarist / songwriter Robin TrowerFind albums by this artist, released on AtlanticFind albums on this label Records in 1988 and 1990 respectively.

CD1 is the album “Take What You NeedFind albums with this title”, which was recorded in a quartet setting with vocalist Davey PattisonFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave BronzeFind albums by this artist and drummer Pete ThompsonFind albums by this artist. It presents nine tracks, all written by Trower or co-written with Bronze. This edition adds one bonus track, which is a live version of one of the original album tracks.

CD2 is the album “In The Line Of FireFind albums with this title”, which was recorded in a quintet setting with vocalist Davey Pattison, keyboardist Bobby MayoFind albums by this artist, bassist John ReaganFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony BeardFind albums by this artist. It presents eleven tracks, most written or co-written by Trower, with two originating from other sources. Two tracks feature lyrics by Keith ReidFind albums by this artist, Trower’s Procol HarumFind albums by this artist cohort.

Following his departure from the iconic Procol Harum, Trower pursues a solo career since 1973, with dozens of albums to his credit. He manages miraculously to stick to his own formula of creative Blues-Rock, which he follows in the sixth decade of his career. His guitar playing is still sharp and clear-cut and his vocals are still as powerful as always, and he does not need to reinvent himself or search for any new avenues, doing what he does best. His many fans love his music, and that’s what matters the most.

There are very few Rock personalities of his statue and legacy still standing today and every new album he releases is an unmistakable blast, on which he definitely takes, as usual, no prisoners.

Overall, these are excellent Blues-Rock albums, with beautifully melodic tunes, solid vocals and sensational guitar playing, which has but a few contenders. The reissue is a most welcomed opportunity to grab a copy of the them. Trower’s many followers need no encouragement of course and some of the self-proclaimed new guitar aces would be wise to take a listen. Brilliant stuff!

RENAISSANCE ~ A SONG FOR ALL SEASONS
WOUNDED BIRD 6049 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

9th album from 1978. Although received badly by the critics, this album is still quite good in every respect - wonderful compositions (including the great `Day of the Dreamer` and the album epic title song), Hasslam in superb form as usual and the musicians play their hearts out. Perhaps this was slightly more commercially oriented then the earlier material, but Renaissance were such professionals that they just could not produce a bad album.

The songs are shorter and more structured, lacking the long indtrumental passages of the earlier albums, but the level of songwriting is superb and Annie Haslam delivers some of her greatest performances. This piano-less quartet might sound slightly unusual at first, but just a few bars into the music it becomes clear that they are s superb unit of Master musicians. Both Farmer and Evans solo with confidence and flair, Williams displays his usual pyrotechnics, which is second to none, and Carter confidently and with virtuosity sets the pace and puts down the backbone at all time. His beautiful tone (excellently recorded) is overwhelming and inspiring. The music includes four compositions by Carter and two by Williams and although it´s not experimental or particularly innovating, is well structured and makes perfect sense musically, allowing plenty of space for soloing. Carter´s solos are of course, as always, full of inspiration and virtuosity and Williams proves to be a perfect partner – well they did play together for many years in the legendary Miles DavisFind albums by this artist second quintet after all. WOUNDED BIRD 7044 (Barcode: 664140704428) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Writing a score for a Hollywood movie was another bold step for trumpeter / composer Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist, a part of the process of expanding his milieu and establishing his career as a total musician / composer and now also arranger for a larger ensemble. The music, which is a set of 16 relative short pieces, constitutes a suite, which is coherent and makes sense as a piece of music meant to be listened to separately from the movie, something a very few soundtracks ever achieve. Stylistically it is mostly Blues based, paying a tribute to Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist orchestrations and compositional approach. The arrangements are clever and sophisticated enough to make the entire content flow without a moment of tediousness. The album also marks the first appearance of the new Marsalis Septet, which includes Marsalis, trombonist Wycliffe GordonFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Wes AndersonFind albums by this artist and Todd WilliamsFind albums by this artist, pianist Marcus RobertsFind albums by this artist, bassist Reginald VealFind albums by this artist and drummer Herlin RileyFind albums by this artist. The overall atmosphere of the album takes the listener deep into the 1930s, when Jazz was the popular music of the time, played in clubs and dancehalls. Mind you, this is not some kind of "retro" effort, but a conscious and deliberate artistic choice. If Marsalis meant to bring back the glory of that music back and expose it to contemporary listeners, he did extremely well. This is a most enjoyable album, which should bring on a smile of satisfaction, a job well done and a memorable experience. Recommended!

WYNTON MARSALIS ~ WYNTON MARSALIS
WOUNDED BIRD 7574 (Barcode: 664140757424) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1981 Released: 2007

American trumpeter / composer / arranger / bandleader Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist is probably the most identifiable Jazz personality worldwide in the last three decades – Mr. Jazz himself! With Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and lately also Freddie HubbardFind albums by this artist no longer with us, Marsalis is also the greatest trumpet player still standing. Sometimes it seems that the responsibility that comes with these honorable positions appear to be just too much for Marsalis to handle, as he has been in the epicenter of a huge controversy concerning his personality, his public statements and even his musical achievements. It was all Guns (of appraisal) and Roses (of admiration) at first – everything just clicked for Marsalis: a prestigious recording contract with ColumbiaFind albums on this label Records, a massive PR campaign for his albums, Grammy nominations and awards and every other conceivable musical award in US and abroad (including the first ever Pulitzer Prize for music) and finally the appointment as Artistic Director of the "Jazz at Lincoln Center", a cushy and extremely well paid job, all these and more turned out to be just too much for his enemies (and he has many of those) to swallow. To say the truth, Marsalis has a mouth, which does not fall much behind his mouth´s extension, the trumpet. The man just loves to voice his opinions, and some of these are quite provocative and extremely controversial, all this on top his always highly stylish wardrobe and often snobbish behavior. All the above make Marsalis an easy target for hatred and criticism, mostly by bigots, short-sighted critics and most of all envious competitors. To tell the truth, I don´t dive a damn. For me, Marsalis was always, from day one, an example of a total musician. He not only has a tremendous gift, but he both feels and understands music, a rare combination with only a handful of musicians around the globe truly possess. His ability to perform and compose Jazz and Classical music only emphasizes his musical versatility and profound effort to study, learn and apply the acquired throughout his entire life. His love of early Jazz, from the Blues, the New Orleans Masters, Louis ArmstrongFind albums by this artist and up to Beboppers like Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist, and in parallel his disrespect towards Fusion and Free Jazz are fine by me. Not everybody has to love every kind of music and even not all kinds of Jazz… as long as they do whatever they do in such magnificent fashion as he does with his music, time after time. So here comes this album, his debut solo recording. As already mentioned, Marsalis is a perpetual student, and this was just his first step, so obviously he was relaying heavily on what he knew then, which for a trumpet player means one thing: Miles Davis. In many respects this album is a direct bridge between the classic Davis recording with the second quintet, almost two decades earlier. Although his quintet does not perform any of Miles Davis compositions or even tunes from the Master´s regular repertoire, the sound and stylistic approach is quite obvious. Emphasized by the fact that about a half of the album´s tracks feature that very same quintet´s rhythm section – Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist on piano, Ron CarterFind albums by this artist on bass and Tony WilliamsFind albums by this artist on drums, and Wynton´s brother Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist sounds remarkably like Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist on his saxophones, the associations just keep flowing. Is it imitation? Hell no! Not even in the slightest, although Marsalis would be called a Davis imitator from now no, even when he completely changed his modus operandi on the trumpet as he went along. Again, who gives a damn? This is a magnificent album, full of superb performances and uplifting music, masterly played from start to finish. Period! And when one remembers that Marsalis was just 20 years old when this album was recorded… give me a break… this is a revelation. But Marsalis was a fast learner and his subsequent recordings will surpass this album, as good as it is, by far. Maturity has this effect on people; they just get better with what they do in time, provided of course that they are as talented as Wynton Marsalis.
Side Note: The fact that Columbia dropped from its catalogue almost the entire recorded output by Wynton Marsalis is a sad and tragic testimony of our times. Columbia made a lot of money from his albums for decades, but considering the state of the music industry, there are no sentiments left. This reissue is released on the Wounded BirdFind albums on this label label; kudos to the label owner for keeping great music alive!

WYNTON MARSALIS ~ LEVEE LOW MOAN: SOUL GESTURES IN SOUTHERN BLUE VOL. 3
WOUNDED BIRD 7975 (Barcode: 664140797529) ~ USA ~ Jazz

This is the third part of the album trilogy, entitled "Soul Gestures In Southern BlueFind albums with this title", which finds trumpeter / composer Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist leading a sextet comprised of his regular band members: saxophonists Wes AndersonFind albums by this artist and Todd WilliamsFind albums by this artist, pianist Marcus RobertsFind albums by this artist, bassist Reginald VealFind albums by this artist and drummer Herlin RileyFind albums by this artist. Williams contributes one composition with the rest of the music being written by Marsalis. As expected, the music is a further exploration of the influence of the Blues on Jazz, and for me is the strongest of the three volumes perhaps due to the wonderfully crafted arrangements. Marsalis´ compositions, now clearly showing his love and respect for Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist, are beautifully balanced and serve as ideal vehicles for the quintet to express their individual skills both as soloists and ensemble players. His beautiful tone and obvious virtuosity can be heard here in depth and enjoyed to the fullest. Although some critics have described this album as "forgettable" and "disappointing" (to quote the less offensive epitaphs) it is quite brilliant from start to finish and a highly enjoyable music experience for any true Jazz enthusiast. WYNTON MARSALIS ~ THICK IN THE SOUTH: SOUL GESTURES IN SOUTHERN BLUE VOL. 1
WOUNDED BIRD 7977 (Barcode: 664140797727) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1991 Released: 2008

Just ten years after he first appeared on the scene as a solo artist bandleader, trumpeter / composer / bandleader Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist could present a résumé, which was unprecedented in Jazz history and was by far more impressive than many lifetime achievements by his peers. Twenty albums with Jazz and Classical Music recordings, countless performances around the world, numerous compositions, prizes and awards, all these wrapped up and commercialized by an intensive PR campaign by his record label ColumbiaFind albums on this label, presented a renaissance musician, a role model and a superstar. Marsalis was just 30 years old and his ego and probably his conscience drove him incessantly to prove himself worthy of this superstar status. His musical projects became ever more complex and encompassing and Columbia indulged him in view of his success. The album trilogy, entitled "Soul Gestures In Southern BlueFind albums with this title", was Marsalis´ final project about the sources of Jazz, New Orleans Blues / Jazz connections and the emergence of modern Jazz from this primeval genealogy. For this, the first of the three albums, Marsalis formed an ad-hoc quintet by inviting legendary saxophonist Joe HendersonFind albums by this artist to play with him, supported by his regular rhythm session comprising of pianist Marcus RobertsFind albums by this artist, bassist Robert HurstFind albums by this artist and drummer Jeff WattsFind albums by this artist. On a couple of tracks Watts was replaced by another Jazz legend Elvin JonesFind albums by this artist. The quintet performs five Marsalis´ compositions, which are designed to allow for extensive improvisations and interplay between the players. The music is intense and dramatic, revealing the composer´s tendency to intensify his music towards a more "chamber" direction, with layers of sound intertwined into the harmonic structure. Marsalis, Henderson and Roberts play some brilliant solos throughout the album and the overall level of musicianship is simply breathtaking. Surprisingly (or may be not) the trilogy received "icy" reviews, again accusing Marsalis of imitating or being overly influenced by Miles Davis in this project. In my view Marsalis at this point was completely cured from the Miles complex and if these recordings have anything to do with Miles, they are a loving tribute to the Masters legacy, not an imitation. Brilliant stuff!

Considering tha quality of music in the 80`s, which was really quite unbearable, they managed to stay on track on record albums without compromising the quality one iota.

JEAN-LUC PONTY ~ INDIVIDUAL CHOICE
WOUNDED BIRD 8098 (Barcode: 664140809826) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1983 Released: 2006

Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist’s 10th album for AtlanticFind albums on this label, which marks a radical change in his approach to music, expressed mainly in his extensive use of electronic sounds (as opposed to his earlier use of acoustic or electric violin). Using a complex array of synthesizers and other devices Ponty creates sonic vistas of great beauty and depth. Mind you the Fusion spirit is still very much there and no danger whatsoever of New Age senseless monotony – this is highly spirited music of great value. Although Ponty is by far the main performer, he does use a few supporting musicians like old buddy George DukeFind albums by this artist on mini-moog or Allan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist on guitar. As usual Ponty wrote all the music presented here and again he managed to come up with some formidable melodies, which lost none of their charm over the years. A must for all JLP fans and people with taste.

The extraordinary talents of the French violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist stretch over a magnificent career, which started in the 1960s and continues to this very day. His impact on the role of violin in modern music (jazz & fusion) is unparalleled and his compositional skills are equally impressive. The most important aspect of his contribution to music is his ability to mix his European lyricism with American rhythmic patterns, creating a unique amalgam of contemporary sound. Since the late 1960s Ponty was active on the US scene as member of Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist’s Mothers Of InventionFind albums by this artist and then John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist’s Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, where he contributed to the creation of the definitive Jazz-Rock Fusion foundations. While still a member of Mahavishnu Orchestra (1975) Ponty formed his own group and started recording a long series of brilliant albums for the AtlanticFind albums on this label label, of which this is the 2nd. With the help of brilliant musicians like Partice RushenFind albums by this artist on keyboards and Tom FowlerFind albums by this artist on bass (ex-Zappa) Ponty managed to give birth to a perfect Fusion album, which is as relevant today as it was on the day of its creation. He wrote all the music, which includes some of the most memorable melodies the genre was blessed with. The performances are also perfect in every respect and all in all this is one of Fusion’s cornerstones and an absolute must.

JEAN-LUC PONTY ~ OPEN MIND
WOUNDED BIRD 8185 (Barcode: 664140818521) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1984 Released: 2006

11th album for Atlantic and a conceptual follow up to its predecessor. This is essentially another solo effort with Ponty creating layers of sound using various synthesizers and then soloing and improvising on top. Chick Corea guests on two tunes and George Benson on another one, but the album is perhaps the most personal and intimate affair Ponty recorded at that period. The music, as usual all written by him, bears the distinct qualities of Ponty’s lyricism and European serenity, but remains focused and fascinating. Definitely a gentler side of Fusion, recommended to attentive listeners. JLP fans will of course love this to bits.

GEORGE DUKE ~ THE 1976 SOLO KEYBOARD ALBUM
WOUNDED BIRD 8208 (Barcode: 664140820821) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1976 Released: 2004

Keyboards player George DukeFind albums by this artist has always been one of my favorite musicians, mainly due to his phenomenal achievements during the first decade of his career. His early piano trio recordings (mid 1960s), his work with Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist (late 1960s) and finally his stint with Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist (early to mid 1970s) are all examples of pure genius and incredible musical versatility. Unfortunately by the end of the 1970s Duke phased out gradually from his jazz and fusion oriented activities and moved into pop, mostly as a producer. His recordings sine then bear little resemblance to the glory of his early days. During the 1970s Duke recorded a series of revolutionary and groundbreaking albums for the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label (sadly mostly not available on CD), which showcased his exemplary jazz-rock / fusion wizardry. This album, his first completely solo recording, was the last of these MPS recordings, released under the title “The Dream”. Duke re-mixed the album in 1980 and in 1982 it was released in the US on the EpicFind albums on this label label under this new title. Unavailable for many years, here it is finally back in circulation. The music, all composed by Duke, is a set of beautifully crafted melodies, played by an array of keyboards, sounding like an entire ensemble. Absolutely brilliant and timeless piece of music!

12th and last album for Atlantic, at least for a while, as he returned to record for the label again a decade later. Ponty returns to the group format, this time as quartet with the excellent Scott Henderson on guitar. With a full rhythm section behind him the music is closer to the usual Fusion form, but the synthesizer layers are still present, created by Henderson using the guitar-synthesizer. WYNTON MARSALIS ~ THINK OF ONE
WOUNDED BIRD 8641 (Barcode: 664140864122) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1983 Released: 2007

Whereas the eponymous debut album by American trumpeter / composer / arranger / bandleader Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist was somewhat a mixed affair, comprising of two different recording sessions with two different rhythm sections, this, his second album, is a well tempered affair. Finally heading his own permanent quintet, with brother Branford MarsalisFind albums by this artist on saxophones, the wonderful pianist Kenny KirklandFind albums by this artist, bassist Phil BowlerFind albums by this artist (or Ray DrummondFind albums by this artist on half of the tracks) and drummer Jeff WattsFind albums by this artist, Marsalis in truly in his element, firmly holding the reins of a leader. With Miles DavisFind albums by this artist influence still looming in the background, Wynton´s trumpet playing shows first signs of his lyrical side with less emphasis on the technical brilliance and more relaxed flow. He contributes three original compositions and the rest of the material includes a Kirkland and Drummond (one each) originals and standards by Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist and Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist. Wynton and Branford play well together, although a tension between the brothers was about to develop soon after, as a result of Branford´s tendencies towards more free-form improvisations while Wynton demanded a more conservative approach. Overall this is an incredibly solid album with no weak moments, flowing seamlessly from one tune to another, with brilliant soloing and tight but inventive rhythm section work. The 1980s were after all the age of the great return, when the two decades of experimentation first with Free form and improvised music and later with Jazz-Rock Fusion was pretty much over, leaving the Jazz musicians to re-invent modern Jazz using solid and well established ground while pushing the boundaries of virtuosity to the limit or perhaps beyond the limit – no other musician at the time was better at it than Wynton Marsalis and his crew. A classic!

WYNTON MARSALIS ~ BLUE INTERLUDE
WOUNDED BIRD 8729 (Barcode: 664140872929) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1992 Released: 2007

This album finds trumpeter / composer Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist leading a septet, his ultimate vehicle of choice after fronting smaller combos in the first decade of his career. The septet comprised of musicians, who played in his earlier groups with the addition of trombonist Wycliffe GordonFind albums by this artist, and included saxophonists Wes AndersonFind albums by this artist and Todd WilliamsFind albums by this artist, pianist Marcus RobertsFind albums by this artist, bassist Reginald VealFind albums by this artist and drummer Herlin RileyFind albums by this artist. The fact that Marsalis´ ensembles expanded from quartet to septet was consistent with other changes in his musical path where a bigger ensemble became necessary as a tool to enable performing an ever increasingly complex and broad scope of his compositions and sophisticated arrangements. But this album also marks another dramatic change with Marsalis abandoning the idea of writing separate "songs" or "tunes" and moving into creating expanded suites in which the separate parts would be combined into a thematic whole. "Blue InterludeFind albums with this title" was the first of such extended works, comprised of many melodies, moods and rhythmic patterns, glued together by an underlying central musical concept and idea. The music is absolutely stunning and the romantic theme of the work, as it is about love after all, shows the gentle and often humorous side of Marsalis. Stylistically the music is based on the entire heritage of "classic" jazz, from its New Orleans roots and up to the almost symphonic complexity of Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist´s Jazz suites. Marsalis´ handling of the trumpet is breathtaking, but all his cohorts are first class musicians and their individual contributions are excellent throughout. This is a small masterpiece in every aspect and an immensely pleasant listening experience from start to finish. No serious Jazz collection can be complete without this gem being included!

OREGON ~ VIOLIN
WOUNDED BIRD 9397 (Barcode: 664140939721) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1977 Released: 2019

This is a reissue of an album by the American ensemble OregonFind albums by this artist, which comprised of oboist Paul McCandlessFind albums by this artist, guitarist Ralph TownerFind albums by this artist, bassist Glen MooreFind albums by this artist and percussionist Collin WalcottFind albums by this artist, with legendary Polish Jazz violinist Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist. The album presents five tracks, the first of which is a collective improvisation, three are compositions by Towner and one is a composition by Moore.

Oregon, formed in 1970 by the above listed four founding musicians and still existing today (2019), has always been one of the most outstanding, open-minded and pioneering American music ensembles, characterized by its consistent search and exploration of new musical paths, which encompass Improvised Music, Jazz, World Music and Avant-Garde elements. The group enjoyed more appreciation in Europe than it ever did in the US and recorded for several European record labels after the initial stint with Vanguard Records, on which this album was initially released in 1978.

An incidental meeting between the members of Oregon and Seifert, which happened in France, let to their invitation extended to him to record an album together in 1977. Later on, in late 1978, Seifert also took part in the recording of a solo album by Moore. Seifert died in February 1979, aged thirty two, as a result of loosing his battle with cancer, which was one of the greatest tragedies in the Polish Jazz history.

On the album´s artwork Seifert is listed simply as one of the ensemble members, which is also perfectly reflected by the music. He developed an incredible affinity to the Oregon musicians, and the music sounds as if they have been playing as an organic unit since many years. His incredible violin parts blend perfectly with the other instruments, in a truly spiritual sense, way beyond just pure musical connection.

In retrospect this album is an extremely important part of Seifert´s sadly limited recorded legacy and shows him in his absolute prime, when his personal style reached maturity and confidence. It is one of his latest recordings, followed only by his last album "PassionFind albums with this title" and the above mention recording with Moore.

It is great to see this monumental album back in circulation and although a more proper reissue accompanied by extended liner notes would have been welcome, at least the music can be heard again. Of course this is an essential part of any serious Polish Jazz record collection or any refined music collection in general. A must!
