  | ASSOCIATION P.C. / JEREMY STEIG ~ MAMA KUKU PROMISING MUSIC 44100 (Barcode: 602517542846) ~ NETHERLANDS ~ Jazz Recorded: 1973 Released: 2008
Association P.C.Find albums by this artist was one of several multi-national Jazz groups active in Europe during the late 1960 / 1970 explosive period of creative activity, which resulted in establishment of the European Jazz and its emancipation from the American Jazz traditions. With Britain as one epicenter of the new music, Netherlands, Germany and France were the other one. Their geographic proximity enabled the existence of multi-national groups, as the musicians were able to meet, rehearse and tour, all within a driving distance from their respective homes. These countries also had a common cultural background, which served as common bond between the musicians. The original group was formed by Dutch drummer Pierre CourboisFind albums by this artist (his initials are in the group’s name) with fellow Dutch players Jasper van`t HofFind albums by this artist – keyboards and Peter KrijnenFind albums by this artist – bass and the German guitarist Toto BlankeFind albums by this artist. Krijnen was soon replaced by German bass virtuoso Siggi BushFind albums by this artist. After van’t Hof left the group to form his own outfit (the legendary Pork PieFind albums by this artist), he was replaced by German keyboardist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist. The group recorded five albums, four of them on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label, and this was the last of them. The idea for recording an album with American flautist Jeremy SteigFind albums by this artist was initiated by the legendary Jazz critic and resident MPS producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, who heard Steig perform at the Munich Jazz Festival, which was organized as one of the events for the Munich Olympic Games in 1972. Berendt was always looking for unusual musical combinations and inspired the (then) forming European Jazz scene by his unequivocal support and prophetic vision. Steig, although American, was always associated with the Avant-Garde and pursued his own search to expand his horizons beyond the stagnant Jazz mainstream. Therefore his rapport with the young European musicians, who were also on a quest to discover the unknown, happened naturally, as Berendt envisioned. The album was recorded live, another wise decision by Berendt, as the character of the music simply suited a spontaneous situation perfectly. Although Association P.C. is often associated with the European Jazz-Rock Fusion (probably due to the fact that electric guitar and keyboards were used), is fact the group had nothing to do with that genre. Blanke and Kuhn will later on play in or lead Jazz-Rock Fusion ensembles, but in that group they played quite a different sort of music, trying to expand Free Jazz (which served as a departure point) into Improvised Music. Steig understood that instinctively and cooperated beautifully. The peak of the album is reached on the 21+ minutes long spontaneously improvised piece, which was the original B-side of the LP. The performances are of course inspired and uplifting, as the musicians were all virtuosi and masters of their trade in spite of their young age. In retrospect the album caught for posterity a glorious moment and a fragment of what was happening on the European scene at the time, which makes it an immensely important document, in addition to being a superb musical experience, completely relevant to this very day. Kudos to Promising MusicFind albums on this label for the excellent remaster and elegant packaging of the reissue. A must!

  | EUGEN CICERO ~ ROKOKO-JAZZ MPS 4029759152477 (Barcode: 4029759152477) ~ ROMANIA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion Recorded: 1965 Released: 2020
This is the reissue / remaster of the debut album by Romanian pianist / composer Eugene CiceroFind albums by this artist, recorded in a trio format with German bassist Peter WitteFind albums by this artist and Swiss drummer Charly AntoliniFind albums by this artist. The album presents six tracks, one of which is an original composition by Cicero and five are interpretations of Classical Music pieces by various composers. The original liner notes of this album, written by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, are reproduced in the album’s packaging.
Cicero escaped Romania in 1962 via Berlin, settling first in Germany and later in Switzerland. He had a long career playing Jazz / Swing interpretations of Classical Music pieces and recorded dozens of very successful albums in that idiom. This album, which earned him immediate recognition, was one of the earliest album recorded by the SABAFind albums on this label (later MPSFind albums on this label) label and offers a spectacular sound quality.
Although he operated in the same idiom like Jacques LoussierFind albums by this artist, Claude BollingFind albums by this artist and others, his brilliant technique and intelligent cross-manipulation of the genres, as well as a superb Swing, made him very unique and he managed to avoid the kitsch many of such artists often dived deeply into.
Overall, this is a lovely cross-genre outing, which is witty and elegant, and a pure joy to listen to, and definitely a must for all Jazz-Classical Fusion lovers. It is delightful to have this gem back in circulation. Wholeheartedly recommended! Side Note The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.
In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.
Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.
In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.
Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

  | CONTEMPORARY QUARTET (OLES / MAHALL / TIBERIAN / OLES) ~ PLAYS MUSIC OF BACEWICZ, KISIELEWSKI, KOMSTA, LUTOSLAWSKI, PENDERECKI NOT TWO 744 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion Recorded: 2002 Released: 2002
This is an excellent album by four European Jazz musicians: German clarinetist Rudi MahallFind albums by this artist, Romanian pianist Mircea TiberianFind albums by this artist and Polish brothers: bassist Marcin OlesFind albums by this artist and drummer Bartlomiej OlesFind albums by this artist (collectively known as Oles BrothersFind albums by this artist). They are collectively called Contemporary QuartetFind albums by this artist and on this album they perform nine pieces based on compositions by five Polish contemporary Classical Music composers: Krzysztof PendereckiFind albums by this artist, Stefan KisielewskiFind albums by this artist, Grazyna BacewiczFind albums by this artist, Witold LutoslawskiFind albums by this artist and Marzena KomstaFind albums by this artist. Two additional compositions are by Bartlomiej Oles.
The album beautifully emphasizes the proximity between contemporary Jazz and contemporary Classical Music, combining the written parts and improvised parts completely naturally to such extent that the listener is not able to distinguish between them. Of course the idea is to express the symbiosis between the two musical idioms, rather than show them side by side.
The majority of the music (five compositions) is by Krzysztof Penderecki, who is undoubtedly the most "revisited" contemporary Classical composer by the Polish Jazz musicians. In the liner notes Oles Brothers refer to the legendary recording back in 1971 of a concert initiated by my friend Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, which involved the Free Jazz Orchestra consisting of the top Free Jazz musicians of the day performing the composition "Actions" written by Penderecki, an innovating and daring concept at the time. Over time such interactions became gradually more common, as this album proves.
This is demanding music, which requires attentive listening and open-mindedness, but as usual in such cases is very rewarding. Connoisseurs of Jazz-Classical Fusion and Avant-Garde musical excursions should find this most interesting. Although recorded almost 15 years ago and somewhat forgotten, this music deserves to be re-discovered and listened to, as it obviously is absolutely ageless.

  | WOLFGANG DAUNER ~ FREE ACTION PROMISING MUSIC 44105 (Barcode: 602517554993) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1967 Released: 2008
German pianist / composer Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist was one of the most important forefathers of European Jazz. A prolific composer, bandleader and activist, his contribution to the establishment of European Jazz and its emancipation from the restrains of the American Jazz tradition is truly immense. Dauner, who in addition to his musical activities, was also a prolific painter, always looked at music as an expression of an overall aesthetic / cultural point of view, with philosophical / social and even political undercurrents. Over the years Dauner created a most impressive body of work, encompassing many quite different styles and directions, spanning straightforward (but always unique) Jazz, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Free Jazz and Improvised Music.
In the mid-1970s Dauner formed the revolutionary United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist – a multi-national group of superb European players, which brought Jazz-Rock Fusion to a level of absolute Art. He also co-founded the independent MoodFind albums on this label Records label, which for many years documented some of the most important and unconventional European music (mostly Jazz). His early recordings on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label (as leader and sideman) are in retrospect perhaps the most important from the historical point of view, as they demonstrate the boldness, inspiration and urge to explore uncharted musical territories.
Encouraged and supported by the legendary Jazz critic and resident MPS producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, Dauner could freely express his visions, regardless how bold they might be, especially at the time. For this recording Dauner formed a septet, which included some of his regular cohorts like cellist / bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and American (but living in Germany) drummer Fred BracefulFind albums by this artist. He added three excellent German young players: saxophonist Gerd DudekFind albums by this artist (who would later become one of the central figures of German Improvised Music and Free Jazz), bassist Jurgen KargFind albums by this artist and drummer / tabla player Mani NeumeierFind albums by this artist (later a member of the legendary Guru GuruFind albums by this artist group). As the last member of the septet Dauner selected the then little known French virtuoso violinist Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, who was of course destined to achieve worldwide recognition later on.
The septet performs five of Dauner’s compositions, which provide a skeletal framework for group improvisations by the band members. The double bass / drums lineup allows for complex rhythmic patterns to evolve, and of course there is plenty of space for individual solo spots, but overall the music is mostly a group effort, Dauner uses “prepared piano” (i.e. differently tuned one) to achieve some novel sound approach. In retrospect this is a superb document of the birth of European Jazz, which takes the Free Jazz idiom and pushes it (here still ever so gently) into the Improvised Music realm. The music lost none of its power and inspiration over the years and for a “first time” listener should be quite an ear opener. Kudos to Promising MusicFind albums on this label for the excellent remaster and elegant packaging of the reissue. A must!

  | NATHAN DAVIS ~ THE HIP WALK MPS 4029759181163 (Barcode: 4029759181163) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1965 Released: 2023
This is a reissue / remaster of an album by American saxophonist / flautist / composer Nathan DavisFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quintet setting with trumpeter Carmell JonesFind albums by this artist, Belgian pianist Francy BolandFind albums by this artist, bassist Jimmy WoodeFind albums by this artist and drummer Kenny ClarkeFind albums by this artist. The album was produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and was the second Davis’ recording for the SABAFind albums on this label Records, the precursor of the legendary MPSFind albums on this label Records label. The album presents seven tracks, five of which are originals by Davis and two are standards.
Davis, Jones, Woode and Clarke were among the many American expatriates living in Europe at the time of the recording, escaping their home ridden by racism and social unrest and finding recognition, fame and admiration in Europe, often with extensive help from Berendt, who tried to offer them recording opportunities as much as he could. This reissue features the original liner notes Berendt wrote for the album, which are a brilliant example of his work, from which I learned so much.
Davis never achieved a wide recognition in the US, although he definitely was a superb player and composer. Most of his early recordings were done in Europe and upon his return to the US he concentrated on teaching.
The music is all mainstream Bebop oriented Jazz, with excellent performances by all the participants and offers a wonderful recording quality, for which the legendary SABA studios was world-famous, now even improved with the excellent remaster.
Overall, this is a superb snapshot of American Jazz in Europe, captured for posterity by the SABA / MPS enterprise, with Joachim Berendt at the helm. The music still sounds as fresh and vivid as it was almost sixty years ago, making it everlasting. | DON ELLIS ~ HAIKU PROMISING MUSIC 44113 (Barcode: 602527326337) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion Recorded: 1973 Released: 2010
The trumpeter / composer / bandleader Don EllisFind albums by this artist was probably the most "progressive" and open-minded American Jazz musician of his time. He experimented with odd meters, World Music / Folklore themes and hired European musicians as members of his ensembles and Big Band. His contacts with Europe were excellent and his friendship with legendary producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and the German MPSFind albums on this label label led to the release of two of his albums on MPS, when his US label ColumbiaFind albums on this label refused to record his novel ideas. These were sadly among his latest recordings prior to his untimely death just a few years later. This album was a second of the two MPS recordings and contains a beautiful suite for trumpet, Jazz group and orchestra, with ten themes based on ten short Japanese Haiku poems. Ellis plays wonderfully on this album, as do his colleagues: Bulgarian keyboardist Milcho LevievFind albums by this artist, legendary bassist Ray BrownFind albums by this artist, drummer John GuerinFind albums by this artist and guitarists Larry CarltonFind albums by this artist, David CohenFind albums by this artist and Tommy TedescoFind albums by this artist. The music is also wonderful, mostly melodic and gentle, but with the great orchestral arrangements and trumpet solos on top the overall effect is truly gorgeous. In many respects this is "the other side" of Ellis, compared to his highly energetic Big Band albums on Columbia. Brilliant stuff!

  | BILL EVANS ~ SOME OTHER TIME: THE LOST SESSION FROM THE BLACK FOREST RESONANCE 2019 (Barcode: 096802280276) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1968 Released: 2016
This is a sensational archival album by the greatest Jazz pianist of all time, Bill EvansFind albums by this artist, recorded in a classic piano trio setting with bassist Eddie GomezFind albums by this artist and drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist. The music was recorded at the legendary MPSFind albums on this label Records studio in Villingen, Germany, on June 20, 1968, by the owner of the label Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) and produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. The material was subsequently not released, despite several attempts, and remained in the MPS vaults for almost five decades, to be finally released by ResonanceFind albums on this label Records.
The recording took place just five days after Evans and the trio recorded the iconic live album “At The Montreux Jazz FestivalFind albums with this title”. The 2CD album presents eleven tracks on CD1, which were selected for the intended MPS album, which never materialized, and ten tracks on CD2, which are outtakes and alternate takes, all of course worth being heard. Evans did eventually record an album for MPS some six years later, the groundbreaking orchestral “SymbiosisFind albums with this title”, which is a completely another pair of shoes.
The music consists of a mixture of standards and Evans’ originals, executed with passion and elegance, which were always the essential ingredients of Evans’ music. There are trio, duo and solo performances. The phenomenal and literally symbiotic relationship between Evans and Gomez is omnipresent and the bass gets a prominent presence in the mix and numerous solo spots, in contrast to the drums, which are almost completely far in the background, when present at all. DeJohnette was a member of the trio for just a few months and this is perhaps why his role on this album is minimized, which results in most of the music sounding like a piano / bass duo, which of course does not lessen any of the music’s magic quality.
Overall, this is a wonderful addition to the Bill Evans recorded legacy, covering a lesser documented period of his activity. For the many Evans’ followers it is of course a must, and although it does not reveal anything previously not captured on record, it is certainly a superb piece of Jazz history

  | DIZZY GILLESPIE ~ 20TH AND 30TH ANNIVERSARY MPS 4029759115540 (Barcode: 4029759115540) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1968 Released: 2016
This is a reissue of an album by American trumpeter / composer / bandleader Dizzy GillespieFind albums by this artist, which was his only album for MPSFind albums on this label and which was produced by the legendary Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. Gillespie, one of the Godfathers of Bebop, leads the incredible Reunion Big Band, which includes some of the best American Jazz musicians of the period, like trumpeters Jimmy OwensFind albums by this artist and Dizzy ReeceFind albums by this artist, trombonist Curtis FullerFind albums by this artist, saxophonists James MoodyFind albums by this artist and Sahib ShihabFind albums by this artist and many others. The album was recorded live at the Berlin Philharmonic during the concert that opened the 1968 edition of the annual Berlin Jazz Festival. The album presents six compositions, four of which were composed or co-composed by Gillespie.
The music is the epitome the Bebop sub-genre in every respect, but here it gets expanded into the Big Band environment, which has a spectacular effect. The tight and catchy Bebop compositions are arranged into mini-suites with full blown orchestrations and lengthy solos, creating a continuous ecstatic up-tempo frenzy.
The album is full of great individual statements and the Big Band plays like a perfectly oiled mean Jazz machine, which takes no prisoners. The overall result is a classic Jazz album, which marks the peak of the Bebop sub-genre, which means that any subsequently recorded Bebop albums are basically redundant and derivative.
The original liner notes by Berendt tell the story of the album and its historic background, including what the two anniversaries mean, and as everything else written by Berendt are a great fun to read. Superbly recorded, this is an archetypal Jazz recording, which deserves to be a part of every serious Jazz collection. It´s great to have it back in circulation. This is a reissue / remaster of an album released on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label Records, recorded during a session set up in Copenhagen by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, which captures a bunch of American Jazz expatriates staying in Europe in the 1960s, headed by saxophonist Dexter GordonFind albums by this artist and trombonist Slide HamptonFind albums by this artist. Also present are pianist Kenny DrewFind albums by this artist and drummer Art TaylorFind albums by this artist, Jamaican trumpeter Dizzy ReeceFind albums by this artist, also living in Europe and the only local guy, brilliant Danish bassist Niels-Henning Orsted PedersenFind albums by this artist. The album presents six tracks, three of which are original compositions by Hampton, who also arranged all the tunes, and the other three are standards. The album’s booklet includes the original liner notes by Berendt and new liner notes for the remastered edition.
The music is pretty straightforward mainstream Jazz, perfectly performed by these great musicians away from home. The sound quality of the original album was excellent and this new remaster adds to the clarity and separation, making it a delightful listening experience for the many Dexter Gordon fans, who is captured here at the peak of his European career. He spent fourteen years of his life in Europe and returned to the US only in 1976.
Overall, this is a great reminder of the American expatriate wave, which brought many Jazz musicians to Europe in the 1960s and 1970s, greatly contributing to the development of the local Jazz scene, although it was already developing a strong unique form of the genre at the time. Grappelli and Reinhardt founded the Quintette du Hot Club de FranceFind albums by this artist in 1934, which is considered the first original European Jazz ensemble, which mixed many European musical traditions with Swing in a most unique way. That music can be heard here, in a somewhat updated form, performed by four outstanding virtuosi, and it still sounds absolutely stunning today. I have been privileged to meet all these musicians in person, but sadly only Catherine is still with us today.
Overall, this is a sublime piece of music, which pays tribute to the sources of European Jazz with respect and stunning virtuoso performances. Music just doesn’t get much better than this often. | JIM HALL ~ IT`S NICE TO BE WITH YOU MPS 4029759097303 (Barcode: 4029759097303) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1969 Released: 2014
This is a reissue of a little known album by legendary American guitarist Jim HallFind albums by this artist and his trio, which included American (resident in Europe) bassist Jimmy WoodeFind albums by this artist and Swiss drummer Daniel HumairFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded in Germany for the MPSFind albums on this label label and produced by Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. It presents eight tracks, three of which are original compositions by Hall, one is by his wife and the remaining four are standards.
Considered the guitarists´ guitarist, Hall was one of the great pioneers of Jazz guitar and often described as the last of the classic Jazz guitar Masters. His recording career started rather slowly and this album is one of the few albums recorded before 1970. The accompanying trio plays along with the complex phrases, providing a most amicable backing the guitarist might have hoped for.
The music, although mainstream, is very interesting, mostly due to the very unique way Hall is playing, using both single notes and chords in a very unusual way, setting him apart from all other Jazz guitar players at the time. In many ways his playing was more "European" than his American counterparts, putting elegance and restraint before speed and showmanship.
The overall atmosphere of this album is all about intimacy, virtuosity and sharing the love of music between the musicians and the listeners. Obviously it sounds perfectly contemporary almost five decades later and still pretty amazing today.
This forgotten little gem is definitely worth being discovered!
| DON SUGARCANE HARRIS ~ CUP FULL OF DREAMS PROMISING MUSIC 44115 (Barcode: 602527615967) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1973 Released: 2011
This is the 4th album on the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label by US virtuoso violinist / composer Don Sugarcane Harris. His stints with John MayallFind albums by this artist and Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist exposed his name to international Blues and Rock audiences, but his association with MPS placed him in the company of other great violinists during the "Violin Summit" projects run by legendary producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and established his well deserved reputation as exceptional player, composer and improviser. Harris composed all the music on this album, which is Blues related, but stretches far beyond the basic Blues structures and displays wonderful melodic qualities. He is supported by a great band, which includes keyboardist Dewey TerryFind albums by this artist, bassists Larry TaylorFind albums by this artist and Victor ConteFind albums by this artist, drummer Paul LagosFind albums by this artist and two superb guitarists: Harvey MendelFind albums by this artist and Randy ResnickFind albums by this artist. Saxophonist Richard AplanFind albums by this artist plays on one track. His advanced improvisations take the music beyond the Blues / Blues-Rock settings and turn it into a kind of Blues-Jazz Fusion, completely unique and charming. In retrospect the album lost none of its magic and still sounds fresh and invigorating. Sadly no longer with us, Harris recorded only sporadically after his MPS days, which is a great pity. This is a must to all violin lovers, but every music connoisseur should find something of interest here. Warmly recommended!

  | DON SUGARCANE HARRIS ~ SUGAR CANE`S GOT THE BLUES PROMISING MUSIC 44102 (Barcode: 602517545731) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1971 Released: 2008
American violinist Don Sugarcane HarrisFind albums by this artist was one of the very few great Blues / Rock / Fusion artists playing the fiddle. He came to prominence as a member of the revolutionary John MayallFind albums by this artist’s BluesbreakersFind albums by this artist group and later as a member of Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist’s groups. This album, recorded live during the Berliner Jazztage Festival, presents Harris both as a leader and a participant in the legendary “Violin Summit” super-group, assembled by producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. The solo appearance is in fact an offshoot project of the “Violin Summit”, which was a series of recordings on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label, which celebrated the role of the violin in Jazz, Blues, Jazz-Rock Fusion and Rock and produced probably the most interesting document of music by violinists in the late 1960s / 1970s. The “Violin Summit” projects were based on a concept of a rhythm section and a series of violinist playing solo and in various combinations. The 1971 version of “Violin Summit”, which produced the “New Violin SummitFind albums with this title” double album, included also such great violin players as Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist (France), Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist (Poland) and Nipso BrantnerFind albums by this artist (Germany) – none of them is heard here – and a fantastic rhythm section consisting of the Norwegian guitarist Terje RypdalFind albums by this artist, German keyboardist Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist, New Zealander (resident in UK at the time) bassist Neville WhiteheadFind albums by this artist and British drummer Robert WyattFind albums by this artist. On the solo night Rypdal is replaced by German guitarist Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist. Surrounded by such illustrious musicians, Harris plays his heart out, improvising more daringly than ever before, no doubt inspired by the incredible performances by his European partners, who were musically much more advanced that Harris’ usual American companions. Overall the album presents a great event captured for posterity, with some amazing musical moments documenting the formation of the European Jazz-Rock Fusion, which bridges between such distant genres as the Blues and Free Jazz with elegance and vision. Beautifully remastered and packaged, this album is definitely worth investigation and attentive listening.

  | JOE HENDERSON ~ MIRROR MIRROR MPS 4029759113478 (Barcode: 4029759113478) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1980 Released: 2016
This is a reissue of an album by American saxophonist / composer Joe HendersonFind albums by this artist, which was his only album for MPSFind albums on this label and which was produced by the legendary Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. Henderson is supported by a wonderful team of top American Jazz musicians: pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, bassist Ron CarterFind albums by this artist and drummer Billy HigginsFind albums by this artist. The quartet performs six tunes, five of which are original compositions: two each by Corea (including the title tune) and Carter and one by Henderson and the remaining one is a standard.
The music is a perfect document of Henderson at his artistic peak, playing his heart out with his usual virtuosity. Although basically a mainstream Bebop album, there are many moments on this album where the quartet moves into less restrained area, with Henderson´s expanded solos being among his strongest in his career.
Corea fans will find him playing acoustic piano brilliantly, as usual in his case, also exploring the Free territory occasionally, as he so often did during his career. Carter and Higgins play amicably all the way through and of course their vast experience and talent are felt very strongly.
Overall this is a neglected gem, which Jazz lovers simply should have in their collections. Perfect execution, superb sound quality and a piece of Jazz history; one simply can´t ask for anything more than this. This album is little known to American Jazz fans since it was released only in Germany and this reissue is a great opportunity to close a gap in a record collection! | JUTTA HIPP ~ THE GERMAN RECORDINGS 1952-1955 SWR JAZZHAUS 423 (Barcode: 730099042352) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1952 - 1955 Released: 2015
This is a brilliant collection of early recordings by the German pianist Jutta HippFind albums by this artist, made in Germany before she left the country to continue her career in the US. The material collects four sessions of radio recordings produced by Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and Dieter ZimmerleFind albums by this artist. Hipp is accompanied by the best Jazz musicians active at the time in Germany: saxophonists Hans KollerFind albums by this artist and Joki FreundFind albums by this artist, trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, guitarist Attila ZollerFind albums by this artist, bassists Franz RoederFind albums by this artist and Harry SchellFind albums by this artist and drummers Karl SannerFind albums by this artist and Rudi SehringFind albums by this artist. There are seventeen pieces in total on this album, most being standards with just a couple of originals, one each by Mangelsdorff and Freund.
Hipp plays brilliantly on all these pieces and her presence fully justifies her extraordinary status of the great revelation of early German Jazz. Sadly shortly after her arrival in the US and recording just three albums in 1956, she abandoned music completely and disappeared from the scene.
Although the music on this album comprises mostly of American Jazz standards, Hipp has a very unique approach and inserts many peculiar twists and turns, that make these standards sound differently from how they sound when performed by American musicians, which hints as to the development of European Jazz, which was about to erupt just a few years later.
The music is wonderfully remastered and sounds fresh and vibrant, which turns this album not only into an important historical document but also a great fun to listen to. This album is warmly recommended to all fans of European Jazz who follow its development closely.

This is a reissue of an album by American trumpeter / composer Freddie HubbardFind albums by this artist, which was his first of two albums for MPSFind albums on this label and which was produced by the legendary Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. He is supported by saxophonist Eddie DanielsFind albums by this artist, pianist Roland HannaFind albums by this artist, bassist Richard DavisFind albums by this artist and drummer Louis HayesFind albums by this artist. The album presents one original composition by Hubbard and three standards.
This album marks a transition period between Hubbard´s recordings for Blue NoteFind albums on this label and AtlanticFind albums on this label, which established him as one of the top American Bebop and Hard Bop trumpeters (and to a degree a Free Jazz pioneer), and his move to CTIFind albums on this label, which marked a slightly more commercial and Fusion oriented period. This album was recorded during an informal recording session, organized by Berendt during a break in Hubbard´s European tour and the relaxed and casual atmosphere dominates the proceedings. BTW the same session also produced another album: Richard Davis´s "Muses For Richard DavisFind albums with this title".
The music is everything one might expect from the stellar lineup, i.e. superbly played mainstream American Jazz, which unfortunately introduces nothing new to the Jazz idiom per se and by the time it was recorded was already passé to some extent. Of course Hubbard and his cohorts pay their asses off and their virtuosity is hair-raising. Combined with the first-rate recording quality and the great remaster, this album is a superb example of Hard Bop at its best, full of exciting soloing and outstanding teamwork.
Lovers of mainstream American Jazz should be perfectly happy with this release, which brings this album back into circulation (although it was already reissued on CD in 1988 and 2009, but long time gone from the market). Together the sextet performs four extended compositions, two originals composed by Iturralde and two arrangements of Flamenco pieces composed by the great Spanish composer Manuel de FallaFind albums by this artist.
Conceived by the legendary producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, this is one of the earliest and most striking examples of Jazz-World Fusion in European Jazz, which retains all of its beauty and elegance to this very day. Of course Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and Gil EvansFind albums by this artist recorded "Sketches Of SpainFind albums with this title" a few years earlier, producing a classic example of the genre, but this album merges Jazz and the folkloristic elements much more naturally and symbiotically.
The music allows plenty of space for all the participants to play stretched solos and the listener is fully exposed to their abilities. Iturralde plays some very proficient statements and his sound and phrasing incorporates a distinctive Spanish flavor. De Lucia is brilliant as always and his acoustic guitar emits an unstoppable cascade of notes. Overall the music is simply wonderful from start to finish and manages to move and excite, displaying elegance and grace of rare quality.

The Neo QuartetFind albums by this artist, a string quartet playing electric string instruments, and actor Tomasz BorkowskiFind albums by this artist, who recites poetry, are also on board. The album presents six tracks, all original compositions by Jaskulke.
The concept behind the album is an attempt to “remake” one of the most iconic Polish Jazz albums of all time, Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist’s “Meine Susse Europaische HeimatFind albums with this title” Jazz & Poetry masterpiece, produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, which presented Komeda’s compositions accompanying contemporary Polish Poetry (translated into German), recorded in 1967, hence the album’s title.
This album utilizes six of the same poems (in original Polish version), which were included on the a.m. album, and the same quintet instrumentation, but all the music is new and composed by Jaskulke and adds the string quartet. This is the second album by Jaskulke, which proposes to “remake” Komeda’s music, following the 2018 album “Komeda RecomposedFind albums with this title”.
The sheer boldness of attempting to “remake” an icon might seem suicidal, to say the least. The result should be judged on its own merit, rather than in comparison to the source of inspiration, as such comparison simply does not materialize itself. My opinion about producing new versions of Komeda’s music is widely known, so I won’t repeat it herein.
The music is overtly melodic, full of sentimental lyricism and melancholy, which falls easy on the ear but lacks the depth suitable for the accompanying poetry. The performances are spotless, as expected from the participating musicians, but not particularly exciting. I wandered why this album was completely unnoticed at the time of its release, thinking it was all due to the pandemic, but now after hearing the music I see there were other reasons…
Overall, this is another Komeda inspired album, which contributes little to his memory, despite the fact that the music is fine and the performances are highly professional. I certainly don’t regret buying a copy, if only to hear my beloved poetry.

It presents seven tracks, six of which are original compositions by the quintet members (four by LaBarbera and one each by Stuart and McCloud) and one comes from outside the quintet.
The music is modern Jazz, quite straightforward but excellently played by these gifted musicians. The double saxophone front line offers plenty of fine soloing, interchangeably with the guitar solos, and the rhythm section works like clockwork, which is hardly surprising with Jones at the helm.
Overall this is a solid mainstream offering, with excellent original compositions and a good modern Jazz feel, which should make all Jazz listeners happy. LaBarbera is obviously a very gifted composer and saxophonist and his contributions here are truly exemplary. His solos often move into a much more ambitious territory, touching upon Free Jazz.

  | KRZYSZTOF KOMEDA ~ KRZYSZTOF KOMEDA W POLSKIM RADIU VOL.07 – LITANIA POLSKIE RADIO 1939 (Barcode: 5907812249397) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1967 Released: 2016
This is the seventh installment in a new series of albums launched by the Polish Radio, which presents radio recordings by the Godfather of Polish Jazz, pianist / composer / bandleader Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist. Komeda is of course the most familiar name associated with Polish Jazz and his legacy is of crucial importance to Polish and European Jazz. Considering the fact that Komeda´s studio recordings are relatively scarce, the radio recordings are in fact the main source of his recorded legacy, as they include among others the Jazz Jamboree festival appearances by Komeda and his various ensembles over the years.
The music presented here is part of the very last recordings made by Komeda before his death, all done in October 1967, which was a very busy time for him just before he left Poland for the US on December 17, 1967 and returned already in a comatose state following his tragic accident in October 1968.
Between October 7 and October 10, 1967 the Komeda Quintet with trumpeter Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Roman DylagFind albums by this artist and Swedish drummer Rune CarlssonFind albums by this artist recorded in Baden Baden, Germany the seminal album "Meine Susse Europaische Heimat: Dichtung Und Jazz Aus PolenFind albums with this title", which was produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. The album was originally planned to be recorded in May 1967, and most sources state this as the recording date, but due to Komeda´s illness the recording was in fact postponed and took place as stated above. This album created a great stir behind the Iron Curtain and presented openly Polish Jazz and Polish Poetry to the Western public for the first time.
Dylag, who was living in Sweden at the time, and Carlsson arrived in Germany from Sweden invited especially for this recording and continued together with the rest of the Quintet (riding two cars) to Warsaw, where the Komeda Quartet (Quintet less Namyslowski) played a concert on October 14, 1967 during the Jazz Jamboree Festival. The concert included Komeda´s extended composition "Night Time, Day Time Requiem" dedicated to the memory of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, composed shortly after Coltrane´s death in July 1967, which is included here.
Immediately following the Jazz Jamboree appearance, most probably on October 16 or 17, 1967, the Quintet recorded a session at the Polish Radio studio, which included six tunes, including "Litania" and another version of "Night Time, Day Time Requiem", both of which are included here. The other four tunes were already included on the previous album of this series
The Quartet also recorded a concert for the Polish Television, which also presents "Night Time, Day Time Requiem" and a mega rare interview with Komeda conducted by Polish Jazz critic and broadcaster Roman WaschkoFind albums by this artist.
Considering the fact that Dylag and Carlsson had visas to stay in Poland for just one week, and left Poland immediately before the visas expired, it is certain that all the music recorded in Poland was recorded within that particular week.
The music reflects beautifully the development of Komeda as a pianist / composer / bandleader in the last period of his activity. Coltrane´s death had an immense influence on Komeda, who was a great admirer of the American Giant and followed his path of discovery closely. The piece dedicated to Coltrane is spiritually the closest piece of Polish Jazz music to the music of Coltrane during his latest period.
It is fascinating to compare the two versions of "Night Time, Day Time Requiem"; the earlier live version, played by the Quartet, is masterly performed but still not fully emotionally developed, while the emotional elements erupt on the second version, recorded just days later by the Quintet. Therefore this album is certainly one of the most important Komeda albums, catching Komeda at his absolute peak as a composer with the magnificent "Litania" and performer with the music dedicated to Coltrane.
The recordings are splendidly restored and remastered and nicely packaged in an elegant digipak / slipcase, but there is no in-depth background material about Komeda and his music; however considering the plentitude of published material and several excellent books on the subject, an intelligent listener can easily bridge the knowledge gap. The only small reservation one might have is the fact that these recordings have been already released many times, more or less legally on the somewhat untamed Polish music market, which means they is already owned by the serious Polish Jazz collectors, probably more than once.
Side Note:
On the album´s liner notes the two versions of "Night Time, Day Time Requiem" are listed in reverse order to the order they actually appear on the CD. Also the recording date of the studio version of "Night Time, Day Time Requiem" is listed as 1968, which is not possible as stated above.

  | KRZYSZTOF KOMEDA ~ MEINE SUSSE EUROPAISCHE HEIMAT: DICHTUNG UND JAZZ AUS POLEN ANEX 401 (Barcode: 5907513047957) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz & Poetry Recorded: 1967 Released: 2012
This is not just an album; for people who love Polish Jazz and Polish Culture, this is a monumental piece of Art and History… And for Polish Jazz this is probably the most important recording ever made, surely as far as international exposure of Polish Jazz is concerned.
This album was devised, planned and eventually completed thanks to the efforts of Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, a German writer, critic, producer (and my dear personal Friend and Mentor), one of the most important figures on the European Jazz scene during its formative years. Berendt, a devoted intellectual, was an enthusiastic supporter of early multi-media collaborations involving Jazz, especially in the Jazz & Poetry realm, fell in love with Polish Jazz from the moment he heard it during the groundbreaking second Sopot Jazz Festival in 1957, which he attended accompanying a delegation of German Jazz players.
The plans to make this album were planted in his mind then and there, but unfortunately the Iron Curtain, the invisible great divide splitting Europe in two during the Cold War era, was stronger than the goodwill of the people who wanted to make it happen. It took a whole decade until Berendt was able to invite pianist / composer Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist and his group, which included trumpeter Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Roman DylagFind albums by this artist and Swedish drummer Rune CarlssonFind albums by this artist, to his SWF radio studio in Baden-Baden to finally record the music.
In parallel Berendt invited the German translator Karl DedeciusFind albums by this artist, who was the most important and pioneering translator of Polish and Russian literature and poetry into the German language, to select and translate the poems, which were to be combined with Komeda´s music and recited by actor Helmut LohnerFind albums by this artist. Dedecius made a brilliant job, obviously a labor of lave for him, both as a translator and editor, selecting twenty four poems by Polish poets, many of which were at the time relatively obscure and politically "problematic" for the Socialistic regime. In retrospect two of these poets: Wislawa SzymborskaFind albums by this artist and Czeslaw MiloszFind albums by this artist were eventually to be awarded the Nobel Prize in literature – not a bad guess indeed.
By the time this album was recorded Komeda was of course already the undisputed Godfather of modern Polish Jazz, as well as a world-famous composer of film music, most notably those directed by Roman PolanskiFind albums by this artist, but also many others. His quintet was one of the best European Jazz ensembles at the time, which of course is clearly evident on this recording. Komeda´s themes are perfect companions to the poems, full of lyricism and deep emotions, expressive and often quite free form, enabling the soloists to expand the basic structure into improvised passages.
The album was originally released in West Germany by EMI / ColumbiaFind albums on this label in 1967 and the original vinyl is a super-rare collectors´ item. This new edition adds as bonus tracks three of the themes used on the original album, recorded in extended instrumental versions by the same quintet, which are of course sensational. The album is beautifully packaged in a book-like digipak, which includes the original liner notes by Berendt and many splendid photographs. The texts (both Polish and the German translations) of the poems are unfortunately not included (except one), which is a pity, but obtaining all the copyrights was probably too much of a nightmare. An extended essay about this album should have also been appropriately written.
The fact that this album was not available (at least in a proper form) for forty five years is a shame and this new edition falls under "better late than never" category. Polish Jazz connoisseurs should of course be delighted, finally being able to savor this timeless piece of Art. I can´t imagine any serious Polish Jazz enthusiast not having this album in their collection. I think I can see the late Joachim Berendt smiling, somewhere in the "higher sphere", seeing his brain-child resurrected…

  | KRZYSZTOF KOMEDA ~ SOPHIA`S TUNE POWER BROS 00167 (Barcode: 4011550716729) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1965 Released: 1998
This album presents a live recording by a quintet led by Polish pianist / composer Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist, the legendary Godfather of Polish Jazz, recorded live at the Copenhagen Montmartre Jazz club. At that time Montmartre was one of the most important European Jazz venues and had the privilege of hosting the crème de la crème of worldwide Jazz performers, which testifies as to Komeda´s reputation in Scandinavia. The quintet also includes trumpeter Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist, Danish bassist Bo StiefFind albums by this artist and drummer Simon KopelFind albums by this artist. They perform three original Komeda compositions, one of which ("Svantetic") gets an expanded treatment of over 20 minutes. The same composition was recorded later the same year as part of the legendary "AstigmaticFind albums with this title" album. The remaining two compositions are: "Repetition", which was recorded a couple of years later on the also legendary "Meine Susse Europaische Heimat" album of Jazz and Polish poetry (produced by Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist) and "Sophia´s Tune" dedicated to Komeda´s wife Zofia. The performances are absolutely stunning as this is European Jazz at its absolute peak, eons ahead of its time and light-years ahead of anything else played at the time. Stanko´s trumpet, already at that time, prophesizes the fact that he will have no competitors, as we can witness now, almost 50 years later. Komeda´s music is so completely enthralling and engulfing that is remains completely untouched by time, resistant to fads and fashions and intrinsically timeless. This time capsule, which we are lucky to be able to listen to, is a Godsend. Absolutely essential! Enhanced CD with CD-ROM contents!

  | VOLKER KRIEGEL ~ LIFT! MPS 602527148595 (Barcode: 602527148595) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1973 Released: 2011
This is a reissue of the fourth album by German guitarist / composer / bandleader Volker KriegelFind albums by this artist. It was recorded with a team of top European Jazz musicians at the time, which include British saxophonist Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist, Polish violinist Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist, German bassist Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and Dutch percussionist Cees SeeFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, five by Kriegel and three by Weber.
The music is brilliant, as expected, and the album is a great opportunity to hear the atmosphere of musical camaraderie that swept Europe at the time this album was recorded, which resulted in many international projects like this one. For Polish Jazz enthusiasts this is a rare opportunity to hear Seifert on the verge of his tragically short international career before his death. It also shows the central role of MPSFind albums on this label Records in cementing the European Jazz idiom at the time, with a wide bridge between UK, Western and Eastern Europe, bringing musicians together to create and inspire each other. Of course producer / journalist and my Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist had a huge role in creating this scene in his capacity as producer for MPS Records and director of several German Jazz festivals.
Stylistically the music is a mixture of Jazz-Rock Fusion and Free Jazz, with highly expressive soloing by Sulzmann, Seifert and Kriegel and excellent support by the expanded rhythm section. Excellently recorded, as all MPS projects, this music lost nothing of its relevance over time and sounds absolutely fresh today.
Kriegel’s many fans will of course find his unique guitar playing style at its full exposure here, and his role as one of the central figures of European Jazz in the 1970s is also fully confirmed here.
Overall this is a definite “blast from the past”, which deserves to be heard, although it’s pretty tough to find a copy of this album today. Surely worth the effort of trying!
| JOACHIM KUHN ~ HIP ELEGY (MOST PERFECT SOUND EDITION) MPS 9808186 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist ranks among the most famous European jazz musicians. Brilliant pianist and composer, he has been active on the German jazz scene since the mid-1960’s, first playing with his older brother Ralf KuhnFind albums by this artist (a superb jazz clarinet player – see their excellent album on the American Impulse!Find albums on this label label, if you can find it) and later enjoyed a spectacular solo career, playing and recording with all the best jazz musicians around the world. As many of his German colleagues he played mostly free jazz in his early days and later expanded also to Jazz-Rock.
For this 1975 recording Kuhn assembled a stellar group of musicians: Japanese trumpeter Terumasa HinoFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist extraordinare Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, Brazilian percussionist Nana VasconcelosFind albums by this artist and an all-American rhythm section with John LeeFind albums by this artist on bass and Alphonse MouzonFind albums by this artist on drums. Together they play a set of Kuhn’s superb compositions, executed with elegance and virtuosity rarely heard elsewhere. Kuhn’s superb piano technique, of the classical concert hall scale, sets the tone, but he also uses electronic keyboards to paint layers of atmospheric backgrounds. Everybody enjoys plenty of space to improvise and the result is a Fusion fan’s dream come-true.
On a side note: the album was produced by Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and the music was first played at the jubilee concerts celebrating his 5,000th radio jazz program on the Sudwestfunk network – where Berendt worked for many years. | ROLF + JOACHIM KUHN QUINTET ~ TRANSFIGURATION MPS 602527224787 (Barcode: 602527224787) ~ GERMANY ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1967 Released: 2009
This is a reissue / remaster of the legendary album by the German Kuhn Brothers, clarinetists / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist and pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist. The quintet includes also German vibraphonist Karl BergerFind albums by this artist, French bassist Bernard GuerinFind albums by this artist and Italian drummer Aldo RomanoFind albums by this artist. The instrumentation mimics the classic lineup of the Benny GoodmanFind albums by this artist quintet, but the music is of course from another musical sphere. The album was conceived and produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, and was the first recording by the Kuhn Brothers following their unification in West Germany, but their third album overall, following the no less legendary “SolariusFind albums with this title” album recorded in 1964 and released in DDR on the AmigaFind albums on this label label and the “Re-Union In BerlinFind albums with this title” album recorded in 1965 and released in West Germany on the CBSFind albums on this label label. The album presents four tracks, three composed by Joachim Kuhn, and one co-composed by both brothers.
The album is an outstanding example of early European Free Jazz / Improvised Music, of the absolutely highest standard and imagination, which took the seeds of American Free Jazz of the period and took them to another plane, way more sophisticated, Artistic and imaginative. The performances are blood-chilling and absolutely unique, in many ways probably exposing the very peak of the Jazz creativity, which to be honest never managed to climb much higher than what can be heard here.
Although Joachim Kuhn is the focal figure of this album, and the music itself, Rolf Kuhn is for me the true hero of this session, considering the fact that he is deeply rooted in American Swing and Mainstream, playing in the US for many years, and yet manged to detach himself from that tradition in such a radical way, which is way more difficult than plunging into Improvising Music straight on, like his younger brother. Rolf’s death almost two years ago (2022) was a huge personal loss for me, since we have been Friends for so many years and I truly admired his talent and wisdom.
Overall, this is one of the most pivotal Jazz albums in European Jazz, despite the fact that it is only known by relatively very few Jazz listeners. I have owned a copy since day one and listened to this album countless times in the almost sixty years since it was released, and each and every time I managed to discover something new in the music. I can only hope some more listeners will discover it one day, although admittedly it is quite difficult to find a copy. This is a reissue / remaster of an album by German trombonist / composer / bandleader Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with German pianist Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist and American rhythm section: bassist Eddie GomezFind albums by this artist and drummer Elvin JonesFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight tracks, all original compositions, seven by Mangelsdorff and one by Jones. Three of the tracks are duos, one each with all the three members of the quartet. The album was produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and the booklet includes his original liner notes.
The music is stunningly brilliant and presents not only Mangelsdorff’s unique virtuosity, but also his sublime skills as a composer and his phenomenal ability to make contact with other musicians. In fact, he played with all these three musicians earlier on, but never together as a quartet. The three duos are beautiful examples of the “Art of the Duo” phenomenon, in which Mangelsdorff excelled throughout his career.
The album is one of several outstanding recordings Mangelsdorff made for MPS, all of which are milestones of European Jazz, and surely also are some of the most important examples of the role of trombone in Jazz, of which he was the greatest Master ever, and who revolutionized its role in modern Jazz, breaking all the limitations of the instrument.
Overall, this is a sublime example of the European Jazz achievements, which expanded the genre beyond its original boundaries and took it to new artistic levels, outgrowing the tradition beyond the imagination. A true gem deserving an honorable place in every serious Jazz record collection! This is a reissue / remaster of three iconic albums by the Godfather of modern German Jazz, trombonist / composer / bandleader Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist. All three albums were recorded for and released by the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label and all were produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. I had the pleasure to be in the studio where the first album was recorded and at the Berlin Jazz Days venue where the second album was recorded. All three albums were recorded in a trio setting: trombone / bass / drums.
The albums are:

“Trilogue - Live!Find albums with this title”, recorded in 1976 with American bassist Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist and drummer Alphonse MouzonFind albums by this artist.
“Albert Live In MontreuxFind albums with this title”, recorded in 1980 with French bassist Jean-Francois Jenny-ClarkFind albums by this artist and American drummer Ronald Shannon JacksonFind albums by this artist.
The music is absolutely stellar from start to finish and Mangelsdorff’s exceptional talent as musician, improviser and innovator is fully exposed here. Mangelsdorff proved that there are no limits to any instrument, only to human imagination. These intimate trios are a great display of Free Jazz / Improvised Music at their absolute best, not to mention the exposure of the trombone as a solo instrument.
Mangelsdorff’s contribution to the development of modern German / European Jazz was absolutely crucial at the early post WWII years, with an independent view of the Jazz Artform, quite separate from the American tradition. The privilege of meeting Albert Mangelsdorff and his brother Emil MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist and spending time with them is a worm memory, which I cherish to this day.
Overall, this is a brilliant package of three great albums on 2 CD, which holds some great performances by superb musicians, all of which, except Danielsson, are no longer with us. | ALBERT MANGELSDORFF QUARTET ~ NEVER LET IT END MPS 602517060029 (Barcode: 602517060029) ~ GERMANY ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1970 Released: 2008
This is a reissue / remaster of an album by German trombonist / composer / bandleader Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, recorded with his all German quartet, which includes some of the finest European Jazz musicians active at the time: saxophonist Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist, bassist Gunter LenzFind albums by this artist and drummer Ralf HubnerFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tracks, four composed by Mangelsdorff, two by Sauer and one by Hubner. The album was produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and his original liner notes (albeit only in German) are included on the album’s artwork.
Mangelsdorff, and his brother Emil MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, were the pillars of the modern German Jazz scene, which developed rapidly after WWII, both in West and East Germany, peaking in the late 1960s. Germany developed in time as an epicenter of the continental Jazz scene, with huge number of excellent musicians, brilliant club and festival scene and the strongest music recording industry, with legendary labels like MPSFind albums on this label, ECMFind albums on this label, EnjaFind albums on this label and many others, which produced the finest modern Jazz recordings in the world, leaving the US scene far beyond from that time on.
Albert Mangelsdorff was one of the most vital figures on that scene and his ever changing groups pushed the Jazz limits at all times. His absolutely unique virtuosity on the trombone changed the role of that instrument to an equally important position in the Jazz ensemble as trumpet and saxophone. I was lucky to meet him and see / hear him play and record on numerous occasions and he always left an enormous impression as a person and a musician.
His recorded legacy, which he managed to amass very prolifically, is one of the most important individual European Jazz legacies, which this album proudly represents. The music here presents a perfect amalgam of the Jazz tradition and the rapid development towards modern and Free Jazz.
Overall, this is one of the most interesting Jazz albums in European Jazz, despite the fact that it is only known by relatively very few Jazz listeners. I have owned a copy since day one and listened to this album countless times in the almost fifty years since it was released, and each and every time I managed to discover something new in the music. I can only hope some more listeners will discover it one day, although admittedly it is quite difficult to find a copy.

  | EMIL MANGELSDORFF & ALBERT MANGELSDORFF ~ EARLY DISCOVERIES SWR JAZZHAUS 459 (Barcode: 730099045957) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1953 - 1963 Released: 2018
This is a wonderful archive album by Godfathers of German Jazz, brothers Emil MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist (saxophone) and Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist (trombone). The 2CD album presents live ad studio recordings from the vaults of the German SWR broadcasting corporation, captured between 1953 and 1963 and produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. The various combos include the who’s who of the pioneering German Jazz musicians of the post WWII era, such as saxophonists Joki FreundFind albums by this artist, Hans KollerFind albums by this artist (Austrian resident in Germany) and Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist, clarinetist Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, bassist Peter TrunkFind albums by this artist, drummer Joe NayFind albums by this artist and many others.
The first CD presets twelve tracks recorded by the Albert Mangelsdorff quintet from 1961, which plays four original compositions by Albert Mangelsdorff and eight standards. The music offers the glimpse of how European Jazz musicians interpreted the American Jazz tradition, mostly Bebop influenced, nearing the inevitable departure towards the more advanced modern European Jazz.
The second CD presents three tracks by the German All Stars twelve-piece band (with Mangelsdorff brothers as members), all composed by Freund, and one track by the Albert Mangelsdorff / Peter Trunk duo composed by Albert Mangelsdorff, all recorded in 1963. Next come four tracks by the Joki Freund sextet (with Mangelsdorff brothers as members) playing four original compositions by Freund, recorded in 1957. This is followed by a track by the 1956 version of the German All Stars band, followed by another duo track by Albert Mangelsdorff and Hungarian (resident in Germany) guitarist Attila ZollerFind albums by this artist, recorded in 1953. The last three tracks offer a super-rare appearance by the Austrian pianist Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist recorded in 1957, before his departure to the US and world fame.
All the music is excellently recorded and offers a superb glimpse at the German Jazz scene at the late 1950s / early 1960s, when the European Jazz scene was making its formative first steps towards the independence from the American tradition, after mastering its trademarks. There is a plethora of wonderful solos and ensemble performances present, as well as examples of Albert Mangelsdorff’s love of the duo format, which dominated his entire career.
Overall this is a brilliant document of the era and a must to all European Jazz fans, interested in the history and the process of its development. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | CHARLIE MARIANO ~ HELEN 12 TREES PROMISING MUSIC 44104 (Barcode: 602517546547) ~ USA ~ Jazz
American saxophonist / composer Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist was a fascinating musical figure and a prime example of the difference between the American and the European approach to music in the late 1960s / 1970s. With an established career as a Bebop player in the US, Mariano left his home to travel extensively in the Far East, exploring the culture and music of India, Japan and other Asian countries. Upon his return the West, he settled in Germany and became involved with the local / European scene, not willing to return to the limited and narrow-minded American music scene at the time.
He was a member of many Avant-Garde groups, which at the time expanded the musical boundaries of both Jazz and Rock music, including such legendary outfits as EmbryoFind albums by this artist, Pork PieFind albums by this artist and United Jazz + Rock EnsembleFind albums by this artist. This recording for the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label, organized by the producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, presents a fascinating aspect of his activity at the time and in retrospect remains as one of his all time best albums. With a dreamy ensemble, which includes the Polish violin virtuoso Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist, Czech keyboards wizard Jan HammerFind albums by this artist, British superstars: bassist Jack BruceFind albums by this artist and drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist and Indonesian percussionist Nippy NoyaFind albums by this artist (resident in Germany), Mariano delivers a fantastic session, featuring six of his originals and one composition by Hammer. He plays soprano and alto saxophones, flute and his beloved Indian reed instrument called nagaswaram, which became his trademark.
The music is a great mixture of many musical elements, including strong World Music influences, some Free Jazz and some Jazz-Rock Fusion. This strange amalgam works extremely well, creating a unique atmosphere, which is on one hand different from most other efforts at the time and on the other hand includes them all. Seifert “steals” the show every time he plays, as his virtuosity is overwhelming, but the ensemble work is overall superb, with plenty excellent solos. Uneven rhythmic patterns, “strange” melodies, great performances – all the elements that make music interesting and challenging are here for the listener to enjoy. This is a true classic of the era when daring was considered part of the norm. This beautifully remastered and packaged reissue is most welcome by many Mariano and European Jazz fans all over the globe. A must!

  | BERNARD MASELI SEPTET ~ GOOD VIBES OF MILIAN FOR TUNE 0151 (Barcode: 5906395808663) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2017 Released: 2021
This is an album by veteran Polish Jazz vibraphonist / composer Bernard MaseliFind albums by this artist and his septet, which comprises of four vibraphonists (Maseli, Bartosz PieszkaFind albums by this artist, Dominik BukowskiFind albums by this artist and Karol SzymanowskiFind albums by this artist) and a rhythm section (pianist Boguslaw KaczmarFind albums by this artist, bassist Michal KapczukFind albums by this artist and drummer Marcin JahrFind albums by this artist), a classic “Summit” format, which I utilize since many years in my Singer Jazz Festival, and which was initially devised by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist.
The album is a tribute to one of the Godfathers of Polish Jazz, vibraphonist / composer / bandleader Jerzy MilianFind albums by this artist, a pillar of modern Polish Jazz and one of the greatest composers, especially of orchestral Jazz, on the European Jazz scene. It presents a live recording of a concert recorded a few years back, which offers seven tracks, six of which were compositions by Milian (one co-composed with Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist, another iconic figure of Polish Jazz) and one composed by Pieszka. The sound quality and clarity is excellent. The artwork features Milian’s wonderful paintings, an Artform Milian embraced after retiring from active performing life, which are reproduces in full color, for the first time in the many years of For TuneFind albums on this label Records history ;) The lines notes by Krzysztof BalkiewiczFind albums by this artist are well written and informative.
The music holds no surprises, perfectly executed by the professional team and beautifully weaved by the Master composer, with the expected focus on the vibraphone (and marimba) as the tool of delivery. The vibraphone is a very dominant instrument and the thought of four vibraphone playing simultaneously is pretty scary; fortunately, most of the time it is just one of the four vibraphones (or two of them) that plays at a given moment, which makes the music perfectly audible and balanced. Since the listener is not present at the performance, it would have been nice to have a list of who is soloing on which track, but credits aside, all the players do a perfect job, as does the excellent rhythm section, driving the music steadily and securely.
Overall this is an important tribute to the composing Genius of Milian and a very pleasant listening experience. For vibraphone enthusiasts this is of course a true feast. Of course it is also a well-deserved tribute to Polish Jazz history. Well done Gentlemen!

Although hardly challenging musically, the album shows that the easier side of the Jazz spectrum can be masterly conceived and executed by highly professional musicians, who are Masters of their trade.
Overall, this is a long overdue reissue of a very enjoyable album, which is a perfect companion for sunny days and an effective antidepressant, which should help some of the Jazz snobs to relax once in a while. | ALPHONSE MOUZON ~ IN SEARCH OF A DREAM MPS 4029759097273 (Barcode: 4029759097273) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1977 Released: 2014
Conceived and produced by my Friend and Mentor, the celebrated Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, this wonderful and sadly little known album presents a recording by a Fusion supergroup headed by the great American drummer / composer Alphonse MouzonFind albums by this artist. A group of top Fusion players from both sides of the pond, the collective personnel includes, in addition to Mouzon, two more Americans: keyboardist Stu GoldbergFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Bob MalikFind albums by this artist. The European contingent comprises of Belgian guitar virtuoso Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, German pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and finally Czech bass magician Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist, who plays a funkiest electric bass ever on this album, in addition to his double bass, a very rare occurrence indeed.
Mouzon, aged 29 at the time this music was recorded (the "Happy Birthday" chant heard on the album is about that), was already a Fusion veteran, after being a founding member of Weather ReportFind albums by this artist (with Vitous) and later Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist´s Eleventh HouseFind albums by this artist. His technical proficiency and more importantly superb musicality earned his much respect among his peers and quite a following on the busy Fusion scene. This recording was Mouzon´s second album as a leader for the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label, also produced by Berendt, following the no less outstanding "VirtueFind albums with this title" recorded a year earlier.
Of the nine tracks on this album, six are original compositions by Mouzon, with the remaining three being originals by Catherine, Kuhn and Vitous. They are all superb pieces of music, based on great melodies, complex rhythmic patterns and stunning solo work by all the participants, reflecting Fusion at its best before the genre sadly dwindled into obsessive repetitious doodling.
Hearing this music almost forty years after it was recorded produces a striking realization that it lost absolutely nothing of its original freshness and sounds brilliant as ever, perhaps even more so today, considering what pretends to be music these days. Listening carefully to this album reveals a plentitude of musical details and ideas that went into creating this music, which require talent and dedication. Mouzon´s drumming on this album is of course a delightful reminder of better times.
As all the albums recorded for the MPS label, the recording quality of this album is simply marvelous, with precision and ambience unachieved by almost any other recordings and as such is a true delight to all audiophile music listeners, in additions to being a great document of the era when music truly mattered. | ALPHONSE MOUZON ~ VIRTUE PROMISING MUSIC 44110 (Barcode: 602517602410) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1976 Released: 2009
In the early 1970s the name of US drummer Alphonse MouzonFind albums by this artist was almost synonymous with Jazz-Rock Fusion as one of its most prominent drummers, rivaled only by Billy CobhamFind albums by this artist. His stints with Weather ReportFind albums by this artist and Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist´s Eleventh HouseFind albums by this artist are prime examples of his extraordinary abilities and technique. But Mouzon could play modern Jazz as well as Fusion, and he played with the best, including McCoy TynerFind albums by this artist and many other "conventional" Jazz musicians. This album is a brainchild of the legendary producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, who was a great fan of Mouzon´s playing and invited him to record for the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label twice, before recording this one with him as a leader. For the album Mouzon assembled quite an unusual quartet, incorporating one of the greatest (and often underappreciated) saxophonist Gary BartzFind albums by this artist, which seemed truly inappropriate, as Bartz was more then anything a player in the John ColtraneFind albums by this artist tradition, which was hardly "in place" in a Funk / Fusion setting. The result of course proves that all fears were completely unfounded and the quartet works like a dream. Completed by keyboardist Stu GoldbergFind albums by this artist (a frequent guest on the MPS label), whose feel for Fusion and Funk was beyond reproach, and bassist Welton GiteFind albums by this artist (a legendary bass player, who was a member of SteppenwolfFind albums by this artist! and played with a plethora of Rock, Pop and Jazz acts) the quartet performs a set of compositions composed by Mouzon, playing their ass off from start to finish, producing one of the most energetic and brilliant Fusion albums with no weak moments whatsoever. Mouzon is of course brilliant, a monster rhythmic (and polyrhythmic) driving power at all times. Both Goldberg and Bartz get plenty of solo space and the overall result is a Fusion orgy of unearthly proportions. Although this album is rarely mentioned as a Fusion "classic", it definitely deserves the status, which anybody listening to it should easily recognize. We should be grateful to Promising MusicFind albums on this label for reissuing this classic treasure! As usual, the remastering, sound quality, packaging and extensive liner notes are beyond reproach. Warmly recommended!

  | NIEMEN ~ LIVE IN HELSINKI 1973 GREEN TREE 169 (Barcode: 4015689001695) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1972 Released: 2018
This is an archival album, which presents live recordings by the greatest Polish Rock / Fusion musician of all times, vocalist / keyboardist / songwriter Czeslaw NiemenFind albums by this artist.
The first three tracks on the album were recorded during a concert at the Helsingin Juhlaviikot (Helsinki Festival), Finland captured on August 28, 1972 (not on the 26th as the CD info states) and recorded by Finnish National Broadcasting Company (YLE) and later broadcasted on Finnish Radio and TV. Polish TV years later broadcasted the concert giving the wrong recording year, which is why the wrong date is associated with these tracks here and on YouTube, where the TV recording can be found. Another Polish Rock group, KlanFind albums by this artist, was also invited to that festival and their performance captured on the same day by the YLE can be found on the "Live Finland 1972Find albums with this title" album released by the great archival record label GADFind albums on this label Records – this time completely legally and with restored sound quality.
The two other tracks were recorded at the "Jazz Now!" 1972 Olympic Games concert in Munich, Germany, captured on August 17, 1972 and recorded by the German TV, which can also be found on YouTube. German Jazz critic / author / activist and my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist was the Artistic Director of the entire "Jazz Now" series (August 17 to 20, 1972) and his love and knowledge of the Polish scene was the reason why Niemen was the only Artist from behind the Iron Curtain invited to take part in this highly prestigious event..
All the tracks feature the core of what was to become the most famous Polish Fusion band SBBFind albums by this artist: bassist / keyboardist Jozef SkrzekFind albums by this artist, guitarists Apostolis AnthimosFind albums by this artist and drummer Jerzy PiotrowskiFind albums by this artist, accompanying Niemen´s vocals.
The music is absolutely stunning, as expected, and even the dubious sound quality of these recordings is not able to spoil the unadulterated pleasure this music is still able to generate almost fifty years after it was initially performed. Niemen was always light years ahead of his contemporaries on both sides of the Iron Curtain, and the fact that he remains still relatively anonymous beyond Eastern Europe, despite his revolutionary contributions and pioneering spirit, is a crying shame.
It is a great pity that the entire legacy of Niemen´s recordings made outside of Poland and many of his live recordings remain unreleased and are available only unofficially, like all the Green TreeFind albums on this label titles. His third Box Set, which was to include all these treasures, remains sadly an unfulfilled dream.
For all Polish Rock / Fusion enthusiasts as well as for the numerous Niemen fans this is an essential piece of his discography, which is definitely worth having, despite its technical flaws.

The album was produced by my Friend and Mentor, Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, and was recorded at the celebrated SABA studio in Villingen, Black Forest, where so many of the great European Jazz albums were recorded between mid-1960s and late 1970s. It was one of the first recordings of a Polish Jazz ensemble made outside is their country and across the Iron Curtain, which was a sensational occurrence at the time. Berendt, who was an avid Polish Jazz lover and supporter, helped the Polish Jazz scene tremendously during its hard times. Sadly he is rarely remembered today, which is of course a crying shame.
Musically as well and sonically this is definitely one of the best recordings by NOVI, recorded at their creative peak. Chronologically this was their second album, but since it was not released in Poland (and still is not available there) it is not usually counted as part of their Polish discography. Both the vocal and the instrumental parts are absolutely perfect and are part on the vocal Jazz canon, created earlier on by the French vocal Jazz ensembles Les Double SixFind albums by this artist and The Swingle SingersFind albums by this artist.

He was signed by the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label and released six albums for the label with the Dave Pike Set between 1969 and 1972. An additional 2CD album was released in 2016 ("At Studio 2Find albums with this title") presenting a radio broadcast from the same period.
Although short-lived, the Dave Pike Set recorded some of the most advanced music at the time, combining Jazz with World Music, early Fusion and many Avant-Garde elements, crating a unique European Jazz sound, in spite of the fact that the leader was an American. Much of the credit goes of course the contribution of Kriegel´s highly idiosyncratic compositions and masterly guitar work and the rhythm section ability to swing in free time.
In retrospect this music sounds often more advanced and sophisticated than most of what is being released today, especially as far as innovation and originality is concerned. Although recorded over fifty years ago it is still completely relevant and original. Brilliant stuff!

  | JEAN-LUC PONTY ~ OPEN STRINGS PROMISING MUSIC 44116 (Barcode: 602527615936) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz Recorded: 1971 Released: 2011
This magnificent album by French virtuoso violinist / composer Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist is a great example of European Jazz at its best. The quintet, which recorded this album was Ponty´s regular group at the time, called ExperienceFind albums by this artist, and comprised of brilliant Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, German pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and American rhythm section: bassist Peter WarrenFind albums by this artist and drummer Oliver JohnsonFind albums by this artist. Ponty´s previous MPSFind albums on this label album "Sunday WalkFind albums with this title", recorded 4 years earlier, exposed Ponty´s revolutionary approach to his instrument, but this recording shows how much and how fast he advanced, moving from mainstream Jazz towards much more adventurous surroundings, often including Free, improvised passages. Of course his incredible sense of melody is still present, albeit subtly hidden sometimes. Ponty composed four of the five tunes (the first three are parts of a suite, which occupied Side A of the original LP). The last tune is composed by Kuhn. The playing is phenomenal all the way, both in the more melodic and the completely Free parts, perfectly summarizing the first period of Ponty´s musical journey. Not too long after recording this album Ponty will change his musical direction and create his own admirable brand of Fusion, which will bring him fame and international exposure. But this particular album remains his most notable Jazz achievement. Produced by the legendary Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, this is a must to all European Jazz fans and particularly those who love the violin. A classic!

  | JEAN-LUC PONTY ~ SUNDAY WALK MPS 4029759171379 (Barcode: 4029759171379) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz Recorded: 1967 Released: 2021
This is a reissue / remaster on an early album by French violinist / composer Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet setting with a European quartet, which also included German pianist Wolfgang DaunerFind albums by this artist, Danish bassist Niels-Henning Orsted PedersenFind albums by this artist and Swiss drummer Daniel HumairFind albums by this artist. The album presents five tracks, one each by Ponty, Dauner and Humair, one by American composer Denny Zeitlin and one standard. The recording was initiated by my Friend and Mentor, the producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, who wrote the liner notes for the original album, which are respectfully included in this album’s artwork.
At this early stage of his career, Ponty was already recognized as a great talent and continuator of the French violin Jazz school, following in the footsteps of Stephane GrappelliFind albums by this artist. But Ponty was not a mere keeper of the tradition, as his improvisation was close to John ColtraneFind albums by this artist and his musical path was about to include stints with Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist and other pioneers of Jazz-Rock Fusion, who established the genre.
The three partners Ponty selected to accompany him on this album were also, despite their young age, already amongst Europe’s most seasoned and talented young musicians. The immediate perfect rapport between the quartet members is evident from the very onset of the music and lasts unbroken till the very last note.
The original material is certainly as good, and in fact better than any standard the quartet might have picked to perform together, and the talents of all three composers was about to flourish for years to come. Although Orsted Pederson died in 2005 and Dauner in 2020, Ponty and Humair continue their brilliant careers now, fifty-five years after this classic gem was recorded.
Overall, this is one of the greatest gems of early European modern Jazz and a classic album in every respect, which has but a few equals over time. The fact that it is finally available on CD should make countless fans of violin Jazz ecstatically happy. This is an absolute must in every serious Jazz record collection. | BADEN POWELL ~ IMAGES ON GUITAR MPS 4029759113430 (Barcode: 4029759113430) ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 1971 Released: 2016
This is a reissue of an album by Brazilian guitarist / composer Baden PowellFind albums by this artist, which was his fourth album for MPSFind albums on this label and which was produced by the legendary Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, like all the six albums he recorded for the label. He is supported by French vocalist Janine de WaleyneFind albums by this artist and Brazilian bassist Ernesto GonsalvesFind albums by this artist, percussionist Alfredo BessaFind albums by this artist and drummer Joaquim Paes HenriquesFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, all by Powell. Two of the compositions credit the great Brazilian poet / composer Paulo Cesar PinheroFind albums by this artist as co-composer and the four compositions that feature vocals credit de Waleyne as co-composer. One of the tracks is a solo guitar performance, which was the initial idea for the entire album, but which was abandoned in favor of the more instrumentally diverse version eventually captured on record.
The music presents a wide variety of Brazilian music, including Samba, Bossa Nova, Choro and others, but the focus is of course Powell´s virtuosic guitar playing, which dominates the proceedings. His unique improvisational technique and complete control of the instrument are absolutely stunning. The vocalese parts sung by de Waleyne are also very innovative and daring and demonstrate the endless possibilities of the human voice in the Jazz context.
From a historic perspective this album is still an excellent example of Jazz-World Fusion, and considering the fact that it was conceived and recorded decades ago, it is a truly pioneering effort. Powell, who was more appreciated in Europe than in his native Brazil, paved the path for the popularity of Brazilian music worldwide, which started a few years before this album was recorded, but more importantly produced a highly aesthetic and artistic facet of it, which balanced the widely popular Pop version of the "Brazilian invasion".
As on most MPS albums, this music was superbly recorded and the sound of Powell´s acoustic guitar on this album is state of the art, rarely heard even on contemporary recordings. Brazilian music fans, guitar music fans and all connoisseurs of Jazz-World Fusion recordings should be happy to have this album back in circulation. | SUN RA / INTERGALACTIC RESEARCH ARKESTRA ~ IT`S AFTER THE END OF THE WORLD MPS 4029759097440 (Barcode: 4029759097440) ~ USA ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1970 Released: 2014
This is a reissue of a little known album by American keyboardist / composer / bandleader Sun RaFind albums by this artist, one of the most idiosyncratic, prophetic and theatrical personalities which populated the Jazz Planet (Earth or elsewhere). The album was recorded live in Germany during the 1970 Donaueschingen and Berlin Festivals for the MPSFind albums on this label label and produced by Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. It presents five tracks, all of which are original composition by Sun Ra, which are performed by an orchestra which includes twenty one additional players. Some of the more familiar names of the orchestra members include among others saxophonists John GilmoreFind albums by this artist and Marshall AllenFind albums by this artist, bassist Alan SilvaFind albums by this artist, and drummer Lex HumphriesFind albums by this artist.
The music, although pre-conceived and structured, is mostly freely improvised by the orchestra members, who play lengthy solos and engage in group improvisations. It is very dramatic and of course creates a kind of "space" ambience, which seems to be unattached to anything "earthly". I have seen and heard Sun Ra live many times over the years and this recording presents him at his most experimental stage of his musical "philosophy", which in many respects was also the most fascinating in retrospect.
If we ignore the hype and theatrics, this is one of the earliest examples of large scale collective improvisations, and as such is an important historic document of the development of Jazz and Improvised Music. The fact that these German festivals welcomed this extravagant music documents the openness and spirit of exploration that characterized the European Jazz scene at the time, often accepting American Jazz musicians, who were personae non gratae in their homeland.
This forgotten little gem is definitely worth being discovered! | PIOTR SCHMIDT INTERNATIONAL SEXTET ~ KOMEDA UNKNOWN 1967 SJ 062 (Barcode: 5902596066796) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2022 Released: 2022
This is an album by Polish Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader / label owner Piotr SchmidtFind albums by this artist, recorded with an international sextet, which includes Lithuanian saxophonist Kestutis VaiginisFind albums by this artist, Czech guitarist David DoruzkaFind albums by this artist, Polish pianist Pawel TomaszewskiFind albums by this artist, bassists American Harish RaghavanFind albums by this artist or Polish Michal BaranskiFind albums by this artist and drummers American Jonathan BarberFind albums by this artist or Polish Sebastian KuchczynskiFind albums by this artist. The sextet performs seven compositions, all by the Godfather of modern Polish Jazz, pianist / composer Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist.
The music is quite sensational, as six of these compositions by Komeda are recorded here for the first time, fifty-five years after they were created. They were originally written as part of the project originated by my Friend and Mentor, German producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, which resulted in the Jazz & Poetry album “Meine Susse Europaische HeimatFind albums with this title”, that combined Komeda’s music with contemporary Polish poetry. Krzysztof BalkiewiczFind albums by this artist, Polish archivist in charge of Komeda’s heritage, found these additional compositions, which were not used in the process of creating the above album and passed them to Schmidt, who arranged them and recorded with his sextet. Obviously such discovery is a major event as far as the history and legacy of Polish Jazz is concerned.
The music is everything that every Komeda fan (and therefore every Polish Jazz fan) might expect, full of brilliant melodic lines, lyricism and melancholy, which are the epitome of Polish Jazz, a big dash of tension and mystery, which characterize Komeda’s compositions and a series of brilliant performances by some of the best Polish, European and American musicians.
The album has all the ingredients of an instant classic, which of course is hardly surprising. Although these compositions were not included on the original album, they are by no means less perfect. The playing time restrictions of the LP format dictated the cruel choices, and the budget restrictions dictated the fact that the planned double LP project was rejected. I often wandered over the years where did those additional compositions disappear, and in my talks with Balkiewicz over the years the subject also came up. It is absolutely delightful to see the music being alive again and the prospect that it might inspire future Jazz generations is truly uplifting.
Overall, this is a monumental piece of Jazz history, a great discovery and a glorious occasion to discover another element of Komeda’s genius. Everybody involved in this project deserves my sincere thanks: the brilliant musicians, the archivist / detective, the people who brilliantly recorded the music, etc. Every true Jazz enthusiast on this planet should listen to this album, as not hearing it constitutes a big void in the ability to comprehend the European musical aesthetics.

Contrary to the above mentioned British encounters, which were more about improvising on Indian melodic themes, this meeting is based on Free Jazz, which makes everything much more intense and complex, but also interesting of course. Considering the fact that this music was conceived and recorded 45 years ago emphasizes Berendt´s visionary approach to music and his pivotal role in the development of European Jazz. This is not easy-listening material, but open-minded people will find this fascinating for sure. Not available for decades, this new edition is a momentous event for non-mainstream music. This is a reissue / remaster of an album by American clarinetists / composer Tony ScottFind albums by this artist, recorded with five Indonesian Jazz players, recorded and released originally in 1967. The album presents six tracks, three of which are arrangements of traditional Indonesian melodies, one is a Jazz standard, one is a composition by Hungarian guitarist / composer Attila ZollerFind albums by this artist and finally one is by legendary Indonesian musician Narto SabdoFind albums by this artist. The album was produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, demonstrating his extraordinary openness to music originating from all around the world and being an important pioneer / instigator of the Jazz-World Fusion genre, with this album being one of the earliest examples of this idiom. Berendt also wrote the extensive liner notes for this album, which are reproduced in full in the album’s booklet.
Scott was also one of the pioneers of Jazz World Fusion and he acquired an extensive knowledge of Folk music from many regions of the world, especially the Far East, incorporating those in his recordings since the mid-1960s. He left the US in the early 1970s and settled in Europe, playing and recording with many European Jazz musicians, including those behind the Iron Curtain. He was a sublime clarinetist throughout his entire career.
The music on this album offers an amalgam of Jazz elements and strong Indonesian influences, moving constantly between the two. Although the Indonesian players at the time were not widely exposed to Jazz, their natural talent compensates for the lack of experience, and the result is truly excellent. The superb sound quality, for which the MPSFind albums on this label label is famous, was beautifully restored.
Overall, this is a wonderful example of the early Jazz-World Fusion, which combines the exotic elements of Indonesian music with the Jazz tradition in a superb way and brings back to life a historic release of the legendary MPS label, which is absolutely worth being remembered. This is a sensational archive album by Polish Jazz violinist / composer Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist. It presents live recordings from the vaults of the German SWR broadcasting corporation. The first four tracks are performed by a duo comprising of Seifert and legendary German trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, captured at the 1976 Donaueschingen Musiktage, produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. Two of the pieces are spontaneously improvised and the other two are composed one each by Seifert and Mangelsdorff. The fifth track, recorded at the 1973 New Jazz Meeting in Baden-Baden, also produced by Berendt (at his home town), finds Seifert as a member of an international Jazz-Rock Fusion sextet with New Zealand (resident in UK at the time) pianist Dave MacRaeFind albums by this artist, Dutch keyboardists Jasper van`t HofFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, who also composed the tune they perform, German bassist Peter TrunkFind albums by this artist and British drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist.
The duo tracks are simply sensational, a beautiful example of the “Art of the Duo” idiom and Improvised Music at its best. Mangelsdorff was already a veteran pioneer of the duo (and solo) formats by that time, but as far as Seifert was concert this is certainly a rare occasion to hear him is such naked intimate setting, although a few months earlier Seifert recorded his solo violin album, which was still unreleased at the time.
The sextet track reflects perfectly what Seifert was into at the time, playing and recording with European musicians, who recognized his exceptional talent, and paving his way to the international career he was destined for, which sadly never materialized when his lost his battle with cancer.
The SWR vaults are a treasure chest of superb live music, which is being constantly released on records. In this case the material is especially important due to the relatively limited recorded legacy by Seifert, which means that every bit of his music is priceless, especially when recorded at such high sound quality as the music on this album.
Overall this is an absolute essential piece of the Polish Jazz recorded history, which dedicated fans will nor willingly miss. But it is recommended to all European Jazz fans since it reveals the incredibly high level of creativity and versatility the genre enjoyed in the 1970s. Wholeheartedly recommended!

This exceptional album by Polish violin virtuoso / composer Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist was the first major exposure of his talents outside of his motherland. Legendary MPSFind albums on this label producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, who had close ties to the Polish Jazz scene, was aware of Seifert´s incredible talent and managed to pull off this recording session, bringing on board a superb team of players, which consisted of German pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and an American rhythm section: bassist Cecil McBeeFind albums by this artist and drummer Billy HartFind albums by this artist. Dutch pianist Jasper van`t HofFind albums by this artist also participates on one track.
Seifert composed all the music on this album, which is a great example of typical Eastern European Jazz, which cleverly combines elements of modern American Jazz, especially that of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, with Folklore and Classical influences. Seifert´s "obsession" with Coltrane´s music and his improvisational technique are plainly evident, especially during the up-tempo numbers. The album´s title track is dedicated to Coltrane´s pianist McCoy TynerFind albums by this artist.
Hearing the album 35 years after it was recorded makes one realize how great music gets better with time, losing absolutely nothing of its initial grandeur. Both Seifert and Kuhn play some incredible solos here and the rhythm section supports them admirably every step of the way. Tragically, just three years after this music was recorded Seifert died, stricken by cancer, before his endless potential was realized and recognized properly.
Seifert managed to record several albums in the US before his untimely death, but this album is definitely his most important and most perfect legacy. Absolutely essential!

  | SOFT MACHINE ~ DROP MOONJUNE 023 (Barcode: 692287902322) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene Recorded: 1971 Released: 2008
Australian-born drummer Phil HowardFind albums by this artist stayed with Soft MachineFind albums by this artist just for five months, but his influence on the group´s transition into free improvisation music was tremendous. He recorded just one side of an LP with the group (the first side of "FifthFind albums with this title") and played quite a few gigs in UK and Europe with the band, which included also saxophonist Elton DeanFind albums by this artist (who brought Howard into Soft Machine as a replacement for the departing Robert WyattFind albums by this artist), keyboardist Mike RatledgeFind albums by this artist and bassist Hugh HopperFind albums by this artist. The European gigs included the legendary appearance at the most prestigious European Jazz Festival at the time, the Donaueschingen Musiktage, organized by Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist.
Howard brought into the quartet a ferocious "wall of sound" technique, which drove the quartet to unprecedented peaks of improvised music, only roughly based on themes stated at the start of every tune, very much in the same pattern as all free jazz, which flourished at the time, following the pioneering explorations of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, Eric DolphyFind albums by this artist and many others. Alas Howard´s days in the band were numbered, as the band was waiting for his replacement, John MarshallFind albums by this artist, to finish his previous engagement with Jack BruceFind albums by this artist. Sadly, following his departure from Soft Machine, very little was heard from this immensely talented drummer, which is a great pity. He can be heard on the Elton Dean´s debut solo album "Just UsFind albums with this title" (a must if you don´t have it yet!).
The music included here, all captured live during Soft Machine German tour, which followed the festival appearance, is a premiere example of their immense quality at that time, delivering some of European Jazz mightiest moments, definitely something that can be enjoyed not only by the dedicated fan base, but also by every Modern Jazz lover the world over. This is s brilliant document, which deserves slow and careful digestion with saliva drooling from one´s mouth, sure more than once. God bless the invention of a sound recorder!

  | CECIL TAYLOR ~ FLY! FLY! FLY! FLY! FLY! PROMISING MUSIC 44117 (Barcode: 602537004287) ~ USA ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1980 Released: 2012
This is a reissue / remaster of a solo piano album by American Avant-Garde Jazz pianist / composer Cecil TaylorFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions by Taylor and it was produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. The packaging includes the original liner notes by Berendt which brilliantly emphasize his extraordinary vision of Jazz music. Included also are Taylor insights on the music as well as reflections by German Avant-Garde Jazz pioneer Alexander von SchlippenbachFind albums by this artist.
The music is everything one might expect from Taylor, which is a completely unbounded freedom of Artistic imagination, combined with his own vision of Jazz and music and general. Despite the enormous complexity of the music it is subconsciously melodic, which of course removes the barriers often surrounding Improvised Music / Free Jazz. It is quite obvious that Taylor feels relaxed and fully appreciated in the elegant and respectful circumstances of the legendary MPSFind albums on this label studio in presence of Berendt and the studio owner / recording engineer Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist.
It is no wonder that Taylor performed and recorded extensively in Europe, where his Art was wholeheartedly accepted and appreciated. Among his extensive, almost entirely live, discography this studio album stands out as one of the most coherent and concise pieces of music he ever recorded and is one of his most memorable performances.
Overall, this is a precious document of the long-lasting career by one of the bravest and most influential Jazz Avant-Gardists, capturing him at a mid-point of his illustrious recording legacy. This album is an absolute must for the Improvised Music / Free Jazz enthusiasts, and considering the sound quality as well as the concentrated creative effort, it is a true gem of the genre!

  | JOHN TCHICAI ~ AFRODISIACA PROMISING MUSIC 44107 (Barcode: 602517689350) ~ DENMARK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1969 Released: 2008
Danish (of Congolese origin) saxophonist / composer John TchicaiFind albums by this artist was one of the very few European musicians involved with the development of Free Jazz in the US in the early 1960s, where he played with Don CherryFind albums by this artist, Archie SheppFind albums by this artist and John ColtraneFind albums by this artist. Upon his return to Denmark in the late 1960s, Tchicai became one of the leaders of European Free Jazz movement, as well as a visionary precursor of Jazz-World Fusion, dedicating much of his work to incorporating African Music into Jazz. This momentous recording documents one of the first major Jazz-World Fusion works, recorded by a Jazz orchestra with 26 players, mostly Danish musicians, with the Dutch saxophone colossus Willem BreukerFind albums by this artist as a guest. The title track is a 22 minutes long Jazz suite, performed by the orchestra and composed by trumpeter Hugh SteinmetzFind albums by this artist, with the soloist improvising individually and collectively on top. It is an amazing piece of music and a daring excursion into uncharted musical territory, which sounds as awesome and impressive today as it did at the tome of its recording, perhaps even more so in retrospect, considering how little experimenting is done these days. The rest of the album includes music composed by Tchicai and performed by smaller ensembles, emphasizing the concept of collective improvisation. The entire album was conceived and eventually brought to life by the legendary producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, who prophetically recognized the importance of Tchicai’s work and struggled ceaselessly to make this immensely complex project to come to fruition. The music remains a timeless manifest to the most creative period in Jazz, when the unexpected was truly expected. Superbly remastered and elegantly packaged by Promising MusicFind albums on this label, this is a treasure. Brilliant!

  | EJE THELIN QUINTET ~ AT THE GERMAN JAZZ FESTIVAL 1964 DRAGON 374 (Barcode: 7391953003747) ~ SWEDEN ~ Jazz Recorded: 1964 Released: 2002
This is a reissue / remaster of a live album by Swedish trombonist / composer / bandleader Eje ThelinFind albums by this artist, recorded with his quintet, which also included saxophonist Ulf AnderssonFind albums by this artist, Belgian pianist / flautist Joel VandroogenbroekFind albums by this artist, Polish (resident in Sweden) bassist Roman DylagFind albums by this artist and drummer Rune CarlssonFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tracks, two of which are originals by Thelin, one is by Vandroogenbroek, another one is by Swedish pianist / composer Lars SjostenFind albums by this artist and three are standards. The last track is a previously unreleased bonus. The sound quality of this 1964 recording is absolutely stunning (well the German radio sound engineers were as good as their British peers). The album’s booklet reprints the original liner notes of the German edition, written by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, whom I miss every day.
Thelin was one of the great pioneers of European Jazz, and although he was strongly influenced by the American Jazz tradition, later on in his career he embraced modern European aesthetics. Dylag was a Polish Jazz pioneer and played on many early Polish Jazz recordings, including those by Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist, where Thelin and Carlsson also played. After he emigrated to Sweden, he was the “Polish connection” for many Polish Jazz musicians, who kick started their careers in Scandinavia.
The music is mostly Bebop oriented, but the European finesse and elegance turns the album into an instant classic, which shows that by the mid-1960s the Europeans were catching up with what arose across the pond, soon to leave the Americans behind deep in the dust ;)
Overall, this is a classic early European Jazz recording, which shows how well the local musicians learned from what was happening across the pond, ready to go their separate ways soon after. Brilliant reminder of the mid-1960, when I was growing up listening to this kind of stuff.

  | MICHAL URBANIAK ~ SMILES AHEAD UBX 1018 (Barcode: 5099901531725) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion Recorded: 1976 - 1977 Released: 2012
This is a reissue of the first (of two) album by Polish Jazz violinist / composer Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist released on the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label, which was produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, who had a deep understanding and love for Polish Jazz and who was instrumental in spreading the fame of Polish Jazz beyond the Iron Curtain. Of the eight tracks on this album, six were recorded at the famous Zuckerfabrik studio in Stuttgart / Germany in November of 1976 with vocalist (and Urbaniak´s wife at the time) Urszula DudziakFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Harold WilliamsFind albums by this artist, bassist Robert BunnFind albums by this artist and drummer Woody TheusFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Transcending SonshipFind albums by this artist). Two additional tracks were recorded in NY in January of 1977, one of which was a duo with Urbaniak and Emmet ChapmanFind albums by this artist, the inventor of the Chapman stick, and the other was recorded by the same team that recorded the "Body EnglishFind albums with this title" album (i.e. Urbaniak, Dudziak, Williams, guitarist Joe CaroFind albums by this artist, bassist Basil FearringtonFind albums by this artist and drummer Steve JordanFind albums by this artist). Urbaniak composed or co-composed four of the pieces, Dudziak two and Williams and Bunn one each.
Under Berendt´s supervision, the album moves back into the most experimental and musically advanced aura of Urbaniak´s exploration of Jazz-Rock Fusion, Electronic and World Music influences, leaving somewhat aside the American Funk and Groove influences, which stylistically resembles the early recordings with ConstellationFind albums by this artist and the three ColumbiaFind albums on this label albums. Berendt, who was a great admirer of Urbaniak´s vocal wizardry, managed to bring back her contribution to the music, giving her an equally prominent role in the proceedings, with two superb unaccompanied solo pieces, a duo with Urbaniak and a strong vocal presence on the rest of the tracks, which overall played a decisive part in the album´s final result. The duo track with Chapman proves Urbaniak´s deep interest in innovation and electronic music development.
In retrospect this is surely one of the strongest Urbaniak´s recordings and a quintessential piece of Fusion history, which still remains unparalleled four decades later. The unique amalgam of musical influences combined with virtuosi performances and a freedom of expression rarely found in today´s music.
For Urbaniak and Polish Jazz fans this is an absolute must of course, but Fusion connoisseurs the world over should be aware of the fact that their record collection is truly incomplete without this album in their possession.

  | BARNEY WILEN ~ DEAR PROF. LEARY PROMISING MUSIC 44106 (Barcode: 602517024816) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1968 Released: 2008
French saxophonist / composer Barney WilenFind albums by this artist is known to Jazz fans mostly for his role in the 1957 recording with Miles DavisFind albums by this artist of the legendary “Ascenseur pour l`échafaudFind albums with this title” soundtrack. But a decade later, Wilen left standard American Jazz behind and took an active role in the burgeoning new European scene in search of new musical adventures. He formed a group called Amazing Free Rock BandFind albums by this artist with young upcoming players like Swiss guitarist Mimi LorenziniFind albums by this artist, German keyboardist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, German bassist Gunter LenzFind albums by this artist and two drummers, Italian Aldo RomanoFind albums by this artist and German Wolfgang PaapFind albums by this artist. As the group’s name suggests, they combined contemporary Rock with Free Jazz, creating an amalgam they called Free Rock. This album is a document of this attempt, and one of the earliest Jazz-Rock Fusion recordings. The material includes mostly contemporary Pop and Rock anthems, with a couple of original compositions and one Jazz composition by Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist. The result is one of the wackiest albums ever recorded and a great document of the era. As the title suggests, Psychedelic instances probably had much to do with the resulting music. Although the music did not withstand the test of time as well as other MPS recordings, producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist thought at the time that this experiment was worth preserving for posterity, and we are (in retrospect) grateful. Superbly remastered and elegantly packaged by Promising MusicFind albums on this label, this is a great trip down the memory lane. Definitely worth investigating.

  | ZOLLER / KOLLER / SOLAL ~ ZOLLER KOLLER SOLAL (MOST PERFECT SOUND EDITION) MPS 843107 ~ HUNGARY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1965
This recording unites three of the greatest European jazz musicians at the time in order to perform as a trio (without bass / drums), a setting pretty adventurous and ambitious. The resulting music is simply breathtaking – a series of solo, duo and trio performances by telepathically connected musical geniuses. Hungarian guitarist Attila ZollerFind albums by this artist, Austrian saxophonist Hans KollerFind albums by this artist and French pianist Martial SolalFind albums by this artist were all seasoned musicians with a proven record and much mutual respect and admiration for each other’s talent.
Often putting such highly individual players together can turn out sour, but in this case it works magic. The interplay is phenomenal and the music is elegant and intriguing. The nine compositions they perform include four Zoller originals and one by Koller. The rest are standards, which are a given a very unique treatment. The album was produced by the legendary European jazz critic / writer / producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist (my dearly beloved Friend and Mentor, unfortunately no longer with us), who also wrote the liner notes for the album.
Let me quote just one passage: "The improvisations that Zoller, Koller and Solal play in their solos, duos and trios are very European in spirit – and one hardly needs to add that, in a year when American jazz magazines have praised European jazz records more highly then ever before, the word "European" can imply a special seal of quality, even in jazz. Attila Zoller, the Hungarian, who, via Germany has made America his chosen land… - Martial Solal, the Frenchman from Algeria… - and Hans Koller, the Austrian tenor saxophonist who paints abstract art on the German-Swiss border: they build a trio that is completely different from a group of musicians who have all grown up together in Hastings Street in Detroit. Zoller-Koller-Solal: a guitarist, a saxophonist, and a pianist who all have the courage to be in jazz what they were born to in life – Europeans with the whole, rich variety of this continent. And this is especially evident in their ensemble playing." Needless to say this album also received a five star rating from the American "down beat". This is a reissue / remaster of an album by three brilliant Jazz musicians, Hungarian (resident in Germany at the time) guitarist / composer Attila ZollerFind albums by this artist, American saxophonist / composer Lee KonitzFind albums by this artist and German trombonist / composer Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, who are accompanied by the rhythm section comprising of American bassist Barre PhillipsFind albums by this artist and drummer Stu MartinFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, which include quintet, trio duo and solo tracks by the participating musicians, all original compositions by them. The album was produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and the booklet include his original liner notes (sadly only in German). Berendt often sized the opportunity to put visiting or resident musicians into the recording studio, creating some of the most exciting lineups ever.
The music is a brilliant example of the European Jazz, which was being forged by mixing the American traditions with local new approaches, and although three of the musicians on this album are Americans and only two Europeans, the music is miles ahead already from the source. Eventually Zoller, who was the most “mainstream” musician herein, settled in the US, whereas Phillips and Martin became part of the European scene for many years.
Although the music offers still some mainstream tendencies, especially on the tunes composed by Zoller, the rest of the tracks, especially the trio/duo/solo parts, are way more Free oriented. Obviously all the musicians perform brilliantly, as expected, and the music lost absolutely nothing of its power and originality over time.
Overall, this is another great example of albums produced by Berendt, which pushed the boundaries of Jazz and shaped the face of European Jazz. This is a part of the MPSFind albums on this label legacy and a must in every decent Jazz collection, albeit not easy to find these days.
