  | PHILIP CATHERINE ~ SEPTEMBER MAN EDEL CONTENT 4029759088806 (Barcode: 4029759088806) ~ BELGIUM ~ Jazz Recorded: 1988 Released: 2013
This is a reissue of a beautiful album by Belgian Jazz Guitar virtuoso / composer Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, recorded with his trio which also includes Dutch bassist Hein Van De GeynFind albums by this artist and Italian (living in France) drummer Aldo RomanoFind albums by this artist. Together they perform ten pieces, three of which are original compositions by Catherine, one is an original composition by Van De Geyn and the remaining six are standards.
Catherine recording career goes back to the early 1970s and he has always been one of the greatest European Jazz guitarist and my personal favorite. His unique touch and approach to the instrument, which amalgamates the Genius of Django ReinhardtFind albums by this artist with modern Jazz and Jazz-Rock idioms, has been an inexhaustible source of superb musical achievements.
This intimate album is his seventh release as a leader, and is often neglected even by his fans, but in many respects it presents him at his best, playing almost acoustically and supported amicably and skillfully by his partners. The guitar is up front here, which enables us to hear Catherine´s artistry in full, even in the most delicate moments. Clear traces of Reinhardt´s characteristics are of course present, but those are used out of respect and only as a small part of Catherine´s incredible palette.
For guitar aficionados this album is a true treasure chest, which is fascinating from the first note to the very last. Catherine´s fans should enjoy the opportunity to get hold of this timeless gem, which was quite difficult to find before the reissue. All Jazz connoisseurs should find this a most welcome and worthy addition to their music library. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | PHILIP CATHERINE ~ THE STRING PROJECT – LIVE IN BRUSSELS ACT 9594 (Barcode: 614427959423) ~ BELGIUM ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion Recorded: 2015 Released: 2015
This is a live recording by Belgian Jazz guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist with his ensemble comprising of pianist Nicola AndrioliFind albums by this artist, guitarist / bass guitarist Nicolas FiszmanFind albums by this artist, bassist Philippe AertsFind albums by this artist and drummer Hans Van OosterhoutFind albums by this artist, and the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de WallonieFind albums by this artist, conducted by Frank BraleyFind albums by this artist. The album presents twelve pieces, eleven of which are original compositions by Catherine and one is by the French composer Jean-Claude PetitFind albums by this artist.
Catherine, who has been one of my favorite guitar Maestros since many decades, decided to perform some of his compositions arranged for a large string orchestra, inviting some of his colleagues from the Jazz and Classical Music fields to write string arrangements for these compositions. The resulting music is a brilliant marriage of Jazz and Classical Music idioms, which is one of the finest of its kind.
Catherine´s compositions were always characterized by profound lyricism and reflected his European Classical Music roots, even when presented in a strict Jazz environment. Therefore this project is a completely natural and aesthetically harmonizing idea, which is executed here with perfection and delicate flair.
Each of these pieces tells a complete musical story and showcases Catharine´s superb virtuosity, which combines shades of Gypsy Jazz, contemporary European Jazz and even Fusion, all the above visited and conquered during his impressive career.
Overall this is a perfect piece of Jazz-Classical Fusion, which should delight all music connoisseurs, guitar enthusiasts and guitar Jazz fanatics. It is an absolute marvel from start to finish!

  | LARRY CORYELL ~ LAST SWING WITH IRELAND ANGEL AIR 641 (Barcode: 5055011700413) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 2016 Released: 2021
This is the last studio recording by the iconic American guitarist / composer Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, captured just a few months before his untimely passing. The music was recorded in Ireland in an intimate trio setting with local bassist Dave RedmondFind albums by this artist and drummer Kevin BradyFind albums by this artist. The album presents six tracks, four of which are standards and two are originals co-composed by the trio members.
Coryell plays with incredible vigor and passion and his virtuosity is unblemished, which means that this album is a delightful farewell with his sublime and unique talent.
Coryell did not receive the due respect for his revolutionary role as a Godfather of American Jazz-Rock Fusion, starting with his absolutely amazing work with Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist in the 1960s and later his own groups, like The Eleventh HouseFind albums by this artist and duets / trios with other great guitarists, like Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, Paco De LuciaFind albums by this artist, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist and others. His extraordinary recording legacy includes over fifty albums as a leader and close to double that number as a sideman. In retrospect he remains as one of the greatest Guitar heroes of all time.
I have been fortunate to meet Larry Coryell many times, as well as his first wife Julie CoryellFind albums by this artist, who wrote one of the first books about Fusion and was a great photographer.
Overall, this is a delightful classic Jazz guitar album, which should delight every true guitar lover, even though it is not particularly innovative. It is, however, simply delightful!

  | LARRY CORYELL / PHILIP CATHERINE ~ SPLENDID WOUNDED BIRD 0153 (Barcode: 664140015326) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1978 Released: 2007
2nd album by this magnificent guitar duo: American Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist and Belgian Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, both established virtuosi with impressive record, who cooperate here to combine their talents in order to create a whole, which is even greater than the sum of its parts. Although both guitarists are mostly known for their activity in Jazz-Rock Fusion, this album presents them in a Jazz setting, partly acoustic and partly electric. The result is a beautiful conversation of two Masters, both technically and aesthetically awe inspiring. The music on this album was written by Coryell and Catherine, but they also play one Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist composition (on this track the German piano giant Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist appears as a guest) and a striking version of a Django ReinhardtFind albums by this artist tune. Guitar enthusiasts will find this album essential listening, but it is most interesting to every Jazz lover. | RUDOLF DASEK ~ JAZZ ON SIX STRINGS INDIES HAPPY TRAILS 771 (Barcode: 8595026677128) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz Recorded: 1970 Released: 2018
This is a reissue of the debut album as a leader by legendary Czech Jazz guitarist / composer Rudolf DasekFind albums by this artist, recorded in 1970 and produced by my great friend Antonin MatznerFind albums by this artist (now sadly departed), which finds him in a trio setting with bassist Vincenc KummerFind albums by this artist and drummer Ivan SmazikFind albums by this artist. On a couple of tracks bass guitarist Lubos NyvltFind albums by this artist is added. The album presents nine tracks, five of which are original compositions by Dasek and four are Jazz standards.
All the music is beautifully remastered and the album comes with extensive liner notes, extremely well researched and full of discographical information, sadly only in Czech language (which works fine for me, but probably less so for other enthusiasts who also might be interested).
Although Dasek recorded earlier on with various Czechoslovak ensembles, including SHQFind albums by this artist and Jazz CellulaFind albums by this artist, this album has put him in the focus of attention as one of the greatest Jazz virtuosos of the time, easily equaling famous "classic" Jazz guitarists active since the 1950s on, but also standing shoulder to shoulder with the pioneering European contemporaries like John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, Christian EscoudeFind albums by this artist and others. Numerous album releases followed in time, many of which were duo recordings, which appears to be his favorite modus operandi, and all of which are masterpieces.
The music is absolutely astounding, both the interpretations of the standards and the original compositions, superbly performed by the trio / quartet, with elegance, flair and typical European elegance presiding at the helm.
The virtuosic performances by Dasek are heaven on earth for guitar lovers and the musical environment where every single note played relates perfectly to the notes played before and after, which always characterizes Dasek´s performances, is a rare treat. The album sounds completely contemporary and is perfectly valid today, despite the fact that it was recorded half a Century ago, easily deserving the "timeless classic" status.
For fans of European Jazz and its history, reissues of this kind are an absolute must, and the fact that this music is available on CD for the first time makes it a wonderful treasure. Brilliant stuff!
My personal thanks to Jaromir KratochvilFind albums by this artist, the owner of Indies Happy TrailsFind albums on this label, for his friendship and the incredible job he is doing to keep this music alive! Side Note Since the 1950s Czechoslovakia had a highly developed Jazz scene, certainly in proportion to its population, which included many successful ensembles and even Big Bands, as well as Jazz clubs, festivals and publications, all this in spite of state censorship and political limitations. The similar situation existed since the 1960s as far as Rock (including Progressive Rock and Jazz-Rock Fusion) was concerned, resulting in many excellent, interesting and innovative ensembles.
The music was relatively well documented by the three state owned record labels: SupraphonFind albums on this label (founded in 1927), PantonFind albums on this label (founded in 1968) and OpusFind albums on this label (founded in 1971 and based in Bratislava, created on the base of Slovak division of Supraphon). Following the "Velvet Revolution" in 1989, the state owned record labels were privatized, with Supraphon dominating the local market.
However, Supraphon was quite reluctant as far as exploring its vast back catalogue is concerned, and this is where the small independent Indies Happy TrailsFind albums on this label Records, a reissue label dedicated to the preservation of the recorded legacy of Czechoslovak music, owned and run by the devoted enthusiast / historian Jaromir KratochvilFind albums by this artist, founded in 2007, comes in. Over the years the label released a plethora of brilliant music, reissuing long deleted LPs and extensively exploring the archives in search of bonus material.
The quest of Indies Happy Trails is similar to what the GADFind albums on this label Records label, run by Michal WilczynskiFind albums by this artist, is doing for Polish music, with similar consistency and praiseworthy dedication.

  | EUROPEAN JAZZ ENSEMBLE ~ MEETS THE KHAN FAMILY M.A MUSIC 807 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 1992 Released: 1992
This is a live album by the European Jazz EnsembleFind albums by this artist, a collective of Jazz musicians led by German bassist Ali HaurandFind albums by this artist (who died in 2018), which included in its various configurations since 1976 the absolute crème de la crème of European Jazz representatives. The lineup on this album comprises, in addition to Haurand, of trumpeters Thomas HebererFind albums by this artist, Manfred SchoofFind albums by this artist and Rainer WinterschladenFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Ernst-Ludwig PetrowskyFind albums by this artist, Gerd DudekFind albums by this artist and Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist, guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, pianists Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and Rob van den BroeckFind albums by this artist, vocalist Uschi BruningFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony LevinFind albums by this artist (of the twelve musicians two are British, one Belgian and one Dutch, and the rest are Germans). On this album they invited three Indian musicians, members of the extended Khan family: Ustad Zamir Ahmed KhanFind albums by this artist on sitar, Irshad Hussain KhanFind albums by this artist on tabla and Ustad Munir KhanFind albums by this artist on sarangi. The album presents four tracks, two lasing over fifteen minutes and two over twenty minutes, one each composed by Danish trumpeter Allan BotschinskyFind albums by this artist (a former member of the ensemble), Sultzmann, Kuhn and Schoof.
The music is a wonderful example of Jazz-World Fusion, with the entire ensemble and the guests offer a group improvisation based on pre-composed themes, but expanding the music way beyond the original melodies, as expected. The ensemble plays some parts in a Big Band manner, but most of the time the music involves group improvisations between the ensemble members and the guests, often flying far and away from the initial source.
Since all the musicians on this album are superb instrumentalists, the level of the performances is nothing short of stunning. All the albums by this ensemble are excellent documents of the diversity and complexity of the European scene, and here they are able to create new cross-genre musical explorations.
Overall, this is a very interesting and rather unique Jazz-World Music album, which presents a meeting between Big Band Jazz and Indian traditional music, which usually is performed in a much more intimate lineup. These musicians prove again that music has no stylistic borders, and gifted musicians are able to communicate within any musical environment without any obstacles. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | MICHAEL GIBBS BAND ~ SYMPHONY HALL, BIRMINGHAM 1991 DUSK FIRE 116 (Barcode: 5065001032677) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1991 Released: 2018
This in an archival release presenting a live recording by a band led by the British trombonist / composer / bandleader Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, which comprises of fourteen British and American Jazz musicians, who play music composed by Gibbs and John ScofieldFind albums by this artist. The Brits include such legendary musicians as trumpeter Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Tony CoeFind albums by this artist and (then very young) Julian ArguellesFind albums by this artist, trombonist Chris PyneFind albums by this artist and others and the American guests include guitarist / composer John Scofield, bassist Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist and drummer Bill StewartFind albums by this artist. The concert captured on this album was the tenth of a twelve concert UK 1991 tour. It presents eleven pieces, seven of which were composed by Scofield and arranged by Gibbs and four were Gibbs´ compositions.
Gibbs shows a consistent affinity towards the guitar and guitar players throughout his entire musical career. His early albums featured British guitarists like Chris SpeddingFind albums by this artist and Ray RussellFind albums by this artist, later on he included in his bands the Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, and then Americans like Scofield, Hiram BullockFind albums by this artist and Bill FrisellFind albums by this artist. Scorching guitar solos and a Rocky feel are therefore a habitual part of Gibbs´ musical DNA and this album is no exception. The Scofield tunes originate from his debut album for the Blue NoteFind albums on this label label "Time On My HandsFind albums with this title" and from the follow up "Meant To BeFind albums with this title", as well as from the still unreleased at the time of the concert next album "Grace Under PressureFind albums with this title". A couple of the Gibbs tunes were premiered during these concerts.
Musically the album follows the "typical" Gibbs´ patterns, with the brass fanfares and swinging background sections, which slowly step back to make space for the soloists, and eventually come back to wrap things up. There are plenty of opportunities for almost everybody to play a solo and the tightly swinging rhythm section keeps everything exactly in check. Naturally Scofield is given the most extensive soloing space and he delivers everything one might expect from him.
This album, as all the albums released on the Dusk FireFind albums on this label label, under the watchful eyes of Peter MuirFind albums by this artist, is a tremendous document of British Jazz history, and is an invaluable addition to any British Jazz collection. The fact that this album features also American musicians makes it no less British, as it is after all Gibbs who sets the tone here, even if Scofield is the front person most of the time. Comparing this music with the versions recorded by Scofield on his solo albums reveals the differences in musical depth and perception, revealing the fact that a British flavor, zing and zest are able to turn pretty straightforward American music into a tasty dish.
The excellent sound quality of this recording makes this album even more desirable than it appears to be at the first glance and of course it is wholeheartedly recommended to all British Jazz connoisseurs, who are still alive and kicking in spite of the statistical truth pointing elsewhere.

  | STEPHANE GRAPPELLI ~ YOUNG DJANGO MPS 042281567223 (Barcode: 042281567223) ~ FRANCE ~ Gypsy Jazz Recorded: 1979 Released: 1984
This is a reissue of an album by the legendary French violinist / composer Stephane GrappelliFind albums by this artist (aged 71 at the time of the recording, dedicated to the music of Jazz icon Django ReinhardtFind albums by this artist. The album is completely acoustic and features two brilliant guitarists: Belgian Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist and American Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, and Danish bassist Niels-Henning Orsted PedersenFind albums by this artist. It presents nine tracks, seven of which were composed by Grappelli and Reinhardt between 1934 and 1939, and one each by Catherine and Coryell. The album was produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and includes his liner notes. The sound quality, clarity and warmth of this album are truly exceptional.
Grappelli and Reinhardt founded the Quintette du Hot Club de FranceFind albums by this artist in 1934, which is considered the first original European Jazz ensemble, which mixed many European musical traditions with Swing in a most unique way. That music can be heard here, in a somewhat updated form, performed by four outstanding virtuosi, and it still sounds absolutely stunning today. I have been privileged to meet all these musicians in person, but sadly only Catherine is still with us today.
Overall, this is a sublime piece of music, which pays tribute to the sources of European Jazz with respect and stunning virtuoso performances. Music just doesn’t get much better than this often. Lovers of so called Gypsy Jazz should find this album indispensable of course. Side Note The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.
In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.
Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.
In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.
Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

  | EERO KOIVISTOINEN / NORDJAZZ QUINTET ~ JAZZ LIISA VOL. 13 & VOL. 14 SVART 094 (Barcode: 6430065583011) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1974 - 1975 Released: 2017
Saxophonist / composer / bandleader Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist is one of the Godfathers of modern Finnish Jazz with a career spanning six decades and a glorious legacy of recorded music spanning a wide range of stylistic explorations. The live radio broadcast captured here presents Koivistoinen and his quartet: pianist Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist (another iconic figure of the Finnish Jazz scene), his brother Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist on bass and drummer Reino LaineFind albums by this artist, hosting the superb Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, who visited Finland at the time. On one track the quintet is expanded to a sextet when joined by the Bulgarian trumpeter Reicho IvanovFind albums by this artist.
They perform five original compositions, two composed by Catherine, and one each by Danish trumpeter Palle MikkelborgFind albums by this artist, Koivistoinen and Ivanov. The music is highly electric (Sarmanto plays electric piano, Catherine electric guitar and even Ivanov plays an electric trumpet – see the Fusion group Eleventh HouseFind albums by this artist led by Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, which had a similar lineup), which results in a charged Fusion fury, comparable to the best work of Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, and offering some of the finest quality of the genre ever recorded.
I am happy to say that Koivistoinen and Heikki Sarmanto have been my friends since decades and I had the immense pleasure to write liner notes for their albums.
The Nordjazz QuintetFind albums by this artist was a collaborative ensemble combining Jazz musicians from the Nordic countries (as opposed to Scandinavian, which means only Denmark, Norway and Sweden and not Finland and Iceland). The lineup changed over time and the one captured on this live broadcast includes Finnish saxophonist / flautist Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist, Danish pianist Ole Kock HansenFind albums by this artist, Norwegian guitarist Nils Petter NyrenFind albums by this artist, Swedish bassist Kjell JanssonFind albums by this artist and Icelandic drummer Petur OstlundFind albums by this artist.
They perform three original compositions, one composed by Hansen and two composed by Finnish Jazz musicians, both keyboardists / composers, not members of the ensemble: Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist and Jukka LinkolaFind albums by this artist. The music serves as basis for extended improvisations within the Fusion oriented idiom, featuring extensive soloing.
These two sessions are ideally matched together and this CD is definitely one of the strongest and most coherent within the Jazz Liisa series.
Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for European Jazz connoisseurs this is an absolute must have! Side Note The Finnish independent label SvartFind albums on this label Records released an unprecedented series of albums called Pop Liisa and Jazz Liisa, which present priceless historical recordings of Finnish Rock, Progressive Rock, Jazz-Rock Fusion and Jazz music, recorded live and broadcasted from the Liisankatu Studios in Helsinki under the "Popstudio" and "Jazzstudio" monikers between 1972 and 1977. The studios were owned by the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company), a public broadcasting service, which not only allowed the burgeoning Finnish music scene at the time to be exposed but also carefully archived the recordings for future generations. All this incredible music was previously unissued and collectively is probably the most important document of Finnish music from that period ever assembled.
The music was released on 36 LPs (Pop Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18 and Jazz Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18) and on 18 CDs with every two consecutive volumes combined on one CD.
The sound quality is absolutely superb, often better than the sound quality on the LPs released by these artists at the time. Many of the groups appearing on these albums never managed to record an album and these recordings are the only recorded legacy in existence of their activity. The released are accompanied by well researched and intelligent liner notes.
This archival project is an outstanding example of how Cultural Legacy should be treated as well as of exemplary dedication to record producing professionalism.

  | JOACHIM KUHN ~ HIP ELEGY (MOST PERFECT SOUND EDITION) MPS 9808186 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist ranks among the most famous European jazz musicians. Brilliant pianist and composer, he has been active on the German jazz scene since the mid-1960’s, first playing with his older brother Ralf KuhnFind albums by this artist (a superb jazz clarinet player – see their excellent album on the American Impulse!Find albums on this label label, if you can find it) and later enjoyed a spectacular solo career, playing and recording with all the best jazz musicians around the world. As many of his German colleagues he played mostly free jazz in his early days and later expanded also to Jazz-Rock.
For this 1975 recording Kuhn assembled a stellar group of musicians: Japanese trumpeter Terumasa HinoFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist extraordinare Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, Brazilian percussionist Nana VasconcelosFind albums by this artist and an all-American rhythm section with John LeeFind albums by this artist on bass and Alphonse MouzonFind albums by this artist on drums. Kuhn’s superb piano technique, of the classical concert hall scale, sets the tone, but he also uses electronic keyboards to paint layers of atmospheric backgrounds. Everybody enjoys plenty of space to improvise and the result is a Fusion fan’s dream come-true.
On a side note: the album was produced by Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and the music was first played at the jubilee concerts celebrating his 5,000th radio jazz program on the Sudwestfunk network – where Berendt worked for many years. This is a reissue / remaster of an album by the German clarinetists / composer / bandleader Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, recorded with an octet, which includes some of the best European Jazz musicians active at the time, like his younger brother pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Gerd DudekFind albums by this artist, trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, Danish bassist Bo StiefFind albums by this artist, Swiss drummer Daniel HumairFind albums by this artist and Danish drummer Kasper WindingFind albums by this artist. The album presents five tracks, four composed by Rolf Kuhn and one by Mangelsdorff.
The album is an outstanding example of European Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion and with the powerful sound created by the octet with the double drums and the brass instruments overdubbed to create what Rolf Kuhn describes as a “Brass Band”, the entire album offers an orchestral effect, full of blood-chilling and absolutely unique results, in many ways probably exposing the very peak of the Fusion creativity, which are amongst the most interesting ever recorded. This album is in fact a close companion to the other Rolf Kuhn orchestral Fusion album “Symphonic SwampfireFind albums with this title”.
The music is based on strong melodic themes, wonderfully arranged for the orchestral environment, multilayered and even multi-rhythmic, emphasizing the complex sound of the orchestra as a complete music-making unit, rather than mostly just accompanying the soloists. By the time this music was recorded, European Jazz was heavily involved with Fusion, which is superbly incorporated within the orchestral sound, with electric guitar and keyboards being an integral part of the ambience. For guitar lovers, this is one of the finest albums featuring the brilliant guitar artistry of Catherine, as well as the electric side of Joachim Kuhn.
Rolf Kuhn emerges here as a brilliant composer and arranger of orchestral Jazz, as well as a musician able to develop in time and embrace new trends and expand his horizons constantly, which characterized him for his entire lifetime, which I was lucky to follow for many years during our friendship.
Overall, this is one of the most interesting orchestral Jazz albums in European Jazz, despite the fact that it is only known by relatively very few Jazz listeners. I have owned a copy since day one and listened to this album countless times in the almost fifty years since it was released, and each and every time I managed to discover something new in the music. I can only hope some more listeners will discover it one day, although admittedly it is quite difficult to find a copy.

This is a reissue / remaster of an album by the German clarinetists / composer / bandleader Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, recorded with a large orchestra and soloists, which include some of the best European Jazz musicians active at the time, like his younger brother pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, American (resident in Germany) saxophonist Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, Danish bassist Niels-Henning Orsted PedersenFind albums by this artist, Belgian drummer Bruno CastellucciFind albums by this artist and others. The album presents five tracks, two of which are parts of a suite, which gave the album its title, all composed by Rolf Kuhn.
The album is an outstanding example of European Orchestral / Big Band Jazz, which took the seeds of American Big Band tradition and transposed it to entirely another plane, way more sophisticated, Artistic and imaginative. The performances are blood-chilling and absolutely unique, in many ways probably exposing the very peak of the Jazz creativity, which to be honest never managed to climb much higher than what can be heard here.

  | CHARLES MINGUS ~ CHANGES: THE COMPLETE 1970S ATLANTIC STUDIO RECORDINGS ATLANTIC 603497838363 (Barcode: 603497838363) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1973 - 1978 Released: 2023
This 7CD Box Set combines all the studio recordings made by the great American Jazz bassist / composer / bandleader Charles MingusFind albums by this artist for the AtlanticFind albums on this label label during the last period of his life between 1973 and 1978. These recordings were released on seven albums, which appear here in their remastered versions: “Mingus MovesFind albums with this title”, “Changes OneFind albums with this title”, “Changes TwoFind albums with this title”, “Three Or Four Shades Of BluesFind albums with this title”, “Cumbia & Jazz FusionFind albums with this title”, “Me, Myself An EyeFind albums with this title” and finally “Something Like A BirdFind albums with this title”. All the music on these albums, with a few exceptions, was composed by Mingus. CD1 adds two outtakes and CD5 adds one outtake. The LP version of this Box Set adds an entire LP8 with seven outtakes.
The list of participating musicians on these albums looks like the who’s who of the American Jazz scene at the time, with the most notable ones being saxophonists George AdamsFind albums by this artist, George ColemanFind albums by this artist and Ricky FordFind albums by this artist, pianist Don PullenFind albums by this artist, drummer Dannie RichmondFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Jack WalrathFind albums by this artist, guitarists Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist and Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, and many others.
The above albums mark the second period of Mingus recordings for Atlantic. Between 1956 and 1961 he recorded several albums for the label, but he was not under exclusive contract with the label at the time. Those albums can be found in the great Box Set released in 1997, called “Passions Of A Man: The Complete Atlantic Recordings 1956-1961Find albums with this title”.
Overall, this Box Sets presents some of the most important American Jazz recordings of all time, preserving the incredible legacy of one of its most important protagonists. Mingus was a great innovator and at the same time a key keeper of the flame, combining the American Jazz tradition with modern trends, unlike most of his contemporaries, who preferred to be stuck in the past. This last period of his life turned out to be also perhaps his most productive and daring, definitely the most mature and aesthetically balanced. All of the music in this Box Set is a Holy Grail of American Jazz, sadly also one of the last displays of its productivity and genius. For Jazz lovers, who don’t own all these albums separately, this Box Set is an absolute must, but those who already have all this material in their collections, it adds almost nothing new, except for neat packaging and remastered sound quality.

  | ALPHONSE MOUZON ~ IN SEARCH OF A DREAM MPS 4029759097273 (Barcode: 4029759097273) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1977 Released: 2014
Conceived and produced by my Friend and Mentor, the celebrated Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, this wonderful and sadly little known album presents a recording by a Fusion supergroup headed by the great American drummer / composer Alphonse MouzonFind albums by this artist. A group of top Fusion players from both sides of the pond, the collective personnel includes, in addition to Mouzon, two more Americans: keyboardist Stu GoldbergFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Bob MalikFind albums by this artist. The European contingent comprises of Belgian guitar virtuoso Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, German pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and finally Czech bass magician Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist, who plays a funkiest electric bass ever on this album, in addition to his double bass, a very rare occurrence indeed.
Mouzon, aged 29 at the time this music was recorded (the "Happy Birthday" chant heard on the album is about that), was already a Fusion veteran, after being a founding member of Weather ReportFind albums by this artist (with Vitous) and later Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist´s Eleventh HouseFind albums by this artist. His technical proficiency and more importantly superb musicality earned his much respect among his peers and quite a following on the busy Fusion scene. This recording was Mouzon´s second album as a leader for the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label, also produced by Berendt, following the no less outstanding "VirtueFind albums with this title" recorded a year earlier.
Of the nine tracks on this album, six are original compositions by Mouzon, with the remaining three being originals by Catherine, Kuhn and Vitous. They are all superb pieces of music, based on great melodies, complex rhythmic patterns and stunning solo work by all the participants, reflecting Fusion at its best before the genre sadly dwindled into obsessive repetitious doodling.
Hearing this music almost forty years after it was recorded produces a striking realization that it lost absolutely nothing of its original freshness and sounds brilliant as ever, perhaps even more so today, considering what pretends to be music these days. Listening carefully to this album reveals a plentitude of musical details and ideas that went into creating this music, which require talent and dedication. Mouzon´s drumming on this album is of course a delightful reminder of better times.
As all the albums recorded for the MPS label, the recording quality of this album is simply marvelous, with precision and ambience unachieved by almost any other recordings and as such is a true delight to all audiophile music listeners, in additions to being a great document of the era when music truly mattered. | ALPHONSE MOUZON ~ IN SEARCH OF A DREAM MPS 4029759119661 (Barcode: 4029759119661) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1977 Released: 2017
This is a reissue of the second album for the MPSFind albums on this label label by American drummer / composer / bandleader Alphonse MouzonFind albums by this artist, recorded with a dream team of Fusion musicians: American saxophonist Bob MalikFind albums by this artist and pianist Stu GoldbergFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, German keyboards marvel Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and Czech bassist Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist. Together, but in varying lineups, they perform nine tunes, six of which were composed by Mouzon and one each by Catherine, Kuhn and Vitous.
The music is a superbly crafted Jazz-Rock Fusion, with great melodic lines and intelligent arrangements, which focus on the music rather than on senseless doodling which overtook the genre soon after this music was recorded. In fact this is probably one of the latest great Fusion albums, closing the initial decade when the idiom crystallized and achieved its greatest triumphs.
The level of the individual performances is absolutely stellar as each of these instrumentalists was a major figure in the Fusion field at the time. Yet the album is completely devoid of ego trips and competition, with respect and ensemble effort at the helm. Mouzon´s unique and unparalleled drumming is of course the power driving this music at all times, and which remains a source of inspiration for all drummers in the world to this day. Catherine´s guitar playing is also stellar and his sophistication remains unmatched. Kuhn and his keyboard wizardry is the cherry on top.
With passing of time, this album becomes ever stronger and valid, as a milestone of what Fusion was (and should be) all about. Mouzon´s contribution to Fusion is of course immeasurable and this album is just one of the pieces of the puzzle that define the genre. Obviously this is an absolute must in every decent Fusion collection and for the younger listeners who might have missed this gem this is a golden opportunity to learn something about real music. Essential listening! | JEAN-LUC PONTY ~ OPEN STRINGS PROMISING MUSIC 44116 (Barcode: 602527615936) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz Recorded: 1971 Released: 2011
This magnificent album by French virtuoso violinist / composer Jean-Luc PontyFind albums by this artist is a great example of European Jazz at its best. The quintet, which recorded this album was Ponty´s regular group at the time, called ExperienceFind albums by this artist, and comprised of brilliant Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, German pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and American rhythm section: bassist Peter WarrenFind albums by this artist and drummer Oliver JohnsonFind albums by this artist. Ponty´s previous MPSFind albums on this label album "Sunday WalkFind albums with this title", recorded 4 years earlier, exposed Ponty´s revolutionary approach to his instrument, but this recording shows how much and how fast he advanced, moving from mainstream Jazz towards much more adventurous surroundings, often including Free, improvised passages. Of course his incredible sense of melody is still present, albeit subtly hidden sometimes. Ponty composed four of the five tunes (the first three are parts of a suite, which occupied Side A of the original LP). The last tune is composed by Kuhn. The playing is phenomenal all the way, both in the more melodic and the completely Free parts, perfectly summarizing the first period of Ponty´s musical journey. Not too long after recording this album Ponty will change his musical direction and create his own admirable brand of Fusion, which will bring him fame and international exposure. But this particular album remains his most notable Jazz achievement. Produced by the legendary Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, this is a must to all European Jazz fans and particularly those who love the violin. A classic!

  | PORK PIE ~ OPERANOIA INTUITION 750447315822 (Barcode: 750447315822) ~ NETHERLANDS ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion Recorded: 1996 Released: 1996
This is a reunion album by the legendary European Jazz-Rock Fusion ensemble Pork PieFind albums by this artist, recorded half a century after the original band was formed in the early 1970s and recorded a couple of excellent albums for the MPSFind albums on this label label. The three founding members: Dutch keyboardist / composer Jasper van`t HofFind albums by this artist, American (living in Europe) saxophonist / composer Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist and Belgian guitar virtuoso / composer Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist are joined by American drummer / percussionist Don AliasFind albums by this artist, who completes the reunion lineup. Together they perform ten original compositions, three each by van`t Hof, Mariano and Catherine and one by Alias.
Although reunions often turn out to be pale reflections of glorious past achievements, this album is a beautiful example of a reunion that not only matches the original music, but in some respects surpasses it. In time pioneering spirit and the fire of creating a new musical genre gives place to reflection and contemplation, with the music aging like a good wine. With some World Music elements added to the mix, the music on this album is simply marvelous from start to finish and is executed brilliantly. All these musicians have mastered every trick in the book, but they never forgot the essence of music being based on writing great tunes and improvising intelligently and emotionally.
This music is all about elegance, good taste, space and mutual understanding, lyricism and communication. There is a place for every member of the ensemble to showcase their respective skills, without a shadow of competition or domination. It´s music made by four equal partners, resulting in an effect being greater than the sum of its ingredients.
Although this album achieved little attention at the time it was released, it remains a wonderful piece of contemporary Fusion, which is completely free of the dreaded endless and senseless doodling and consists simply of superbly executed marvelous music. In should be studied by Fusion players to learn what should be avoided and of course wholeheartedly enjoyed by intelligent Fusion fans the world over. Brilliant stuff!

  | PORK PIE ~ TRANSITORY PROMISING MUSIC 44108 (Barcode: 602517602427) ~ NETHERLANDS ~ Jazz Recorded: 1974 Released: 2008
Dutch keyboardist / composer Jasper van`t HofFind albums by this artist was one of the most prominent young Jazz musicians on the European scene in the late 1960s / 1970s and a pioneer of the new European Jazz, which emerged like a Phoenix on the ashes of the stagnant Jazz tradition. A founding member of the legendary Association P.C.Find albums by this artist, van`t Hof left the group in 1972 (to be replaced by Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist) and a year later formed his own ensemble Pork PieFind albums by this artist (the name being a tribute to a famous Lester YoungFind albums by this artist tune) with four other excellent musicians: the veteran American (but resident in Germany) saxophonist Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, French bassist Jean-Francois Jenny-ClarkFind albums by this artist and Italian (but resident in France) drummer Aldo RomanoFind albums by this artist. The group recorded a couple of albums on the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label, of which this was the first. The group played a completely innovative music, which moved freely between genres and included Free Jazz, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Psychedelic and World Music elements. All five members of the group were splendid musicians, blessed with virtuosity and inspiration, and the rapport between them was phenomenal. This album sounds today as advanced and oracular as it did at the time of the recording, losing nothing of its freshness, a true timeless masterpiece. The Brazilian percussionist Ivanir “Mandrake” Do NascimentoFind albums by this artist appears as a guest on some of the tracks and adds his magic to the mix. In retrospect this is a superb example of what was happening on the European Jazz scene at the time, underlining the perpetual quest for new forms of expression and ceaseless search for new musical vocabulary. Superbly remastered and elegantly packaged by Promising MusicFind albums on this label, this is a treasure and a great trip down the memory lane. Hopefully the other MPS recording by this group will follow soon. Brilliant!

  | ZBIGNIEW SEIFERT ~ LIVE RECORDINGS 1973 & 1976 SWR JAZZHAUS 479 (Barcode: 730099047951) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1973 - 1976 Released: 2021
This is a sensational archive album by Polish Jazz violinist / composer Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist. It presents live recordings from the vaults of the German SWR broadcasting corporation. The first four tracks are performed by a duo comprising of Seifert and legendary German trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, captured at the 1976 Donaueschingen Musiktage, produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist. Two of the pieces are spontaneously improvised and the other two are composed one each by Seifert and Mangelsdorff. The fifth track, recorded at the 1973 New Jazz Meeting in Baden-Baden, also produced by Berendt (at his home town), finds Seifert as a member of an international Jazz-Rock Fusion sextet with New Zealand (resident in UK at the time) pianist Dave MacRaeFind albums by this artist, Dutch keyboardists Jasper van`t HofFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, who also composed the tune they perform, German bassist Peter TrunkFind albums by this artist and British drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist.
The duo tracks are simply sensational, a beautiful example of the “Art of the Duo” idiom and Improvised Music at its best. Mangelsdorff was already a veteran pioneer of the duo (and solo) formats by that time, but as far as Seifert was concert this is certainly a rare occasion to hear him is such naked intimate setting, although a few months earlier Seifert recorded his solo violin album, which was still unreleased at the time.
The sextet track reflects perfectly what Seifert was into at the time, playing and recording with European musicians, who recognized his exceptional talent, and paving his way to the international career he was destined for, which sadly never materialized when his lost his battle with cancer.
The SWR vaults are a treasure chest of superb live music, which is being constantly released on records. In this case the material is especially important due to the relatively limited recorded legacy by Seifert, which means that every bit of his music is priceless, especially when recorded at such high sound quality as the music on this album.
Overall this is an absolute essential piece of the Polish Jazz recorded history, which dedicated fans will nor willingly miss. But it is recommended to all European Jazz fans since it reveals the incredibly high level of creativity and versatility the genre enjoyed in the 1970s. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | VARIOUS ARTISTS ~ POLISH RADIO JAZZ ARCHIVES VOL.30 POLSKIE RADIO 2063 (Barcode: 5907812244026) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1966 Released: 2017
This is the thirtieth installment in the series of releases initiated by the Polish Radio, which presents archive Jazz recordings from the radio vaults. Radio recordings are always a fabulous source of remarkable material, and as far as Polish Jazz history is concerned, the Polish Radio, which was a state monopoly for 45 years, recorded over time a plethora of invaluable material, which apart from the albums released by the Polskie Nagrania record company (also a state monopoly), is the only available additional source of Polish Jazz recordings. For many years Polish Radio recorded concerts presented during Poland´s most important Jazz venues, including the annual Jazz Jamboree Festival and many other festivals as well.
The tracks presented here were recorded live in October 1966 during the ninth Jazz Jamboree Festival in Warsaw and are the second volume of a collection of tracks from that event.
The first ten tracks present the legendary French vocal group The Swingle SingersFind albums by this artist, led by Ward SwingleFind albums by this artist (an American in Paris) and including seven more vocalists. The vocal octet is accompanied by bassist Guy PedersenFind albums by this artist and drummer Daniel HumairFind albums by this artist. In contrast to the earlier iconic French vocal ensemble Les Double SixFind albums by this artist (which included several of the Swingle Singers members earlier on), which sung vocal versions of Jazz standards, The Swingle Singers performed mostly vocal Jazz arrangements of Classical Music pieces, by Johann Sebastian BachFind albums by this artist, Wolfgang Amadeus MozartFind albums by this artist and others. The tracks present here are all in this particular idiom.
The next two tracks present a trio led by American organist Lou BennettFind albums by this artist, who moved to Paris in 1960. The other members of the trio are: Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist and Italian drummer Franco ManzecchiFind albums by this artist. These tracks are of interest as early examples of Catherine´s playing before he started his illustrious solo career.
The last track presents a Polish Jazz quartet led by saxophonist Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist, which also includes pianist Adam MatyszkowiczFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Adam MakowiczFind albums by this artist), bassist Janusz KozlowskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Czeslaw BartkowskiFind albums by this artist. They perform an original composition by Namyslowski, recorded on his debut Polish album by the same lineup.
The beautifully restored sound quality is excellent and the warm ambience of the analog recording is a true joy. As usual with this series, which is very reasonably priced, I miss the presence of "in depth" liner notes / booklet, which should convey the circumstances at which this music was recorded and its importance to the development of Jazz in Poland. Nevertheless this is an absolutely essential piece of Jazz history which every Jazz fan will surely consider an absolute must.

  | ROBERT WYATT ~ SHLEEP DOMINO 45 (Barcode: 5034202204428) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene Recorded: 1996 - 1997 Released: 2008
7th album by Robert WyattFind albums by this artist, which follows up the previous release in the path of returning to more conventional music making and musical cooperation with other musicians, mostly from the Avant-Garde and jazz circles, like guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Evan ParkerFind albums by this artist, guitarist Paul WellerFind albums by this artist and others. Also the co-writing partnership with his wife Alfreda BengeFind albums by this artist, who contributes her poetic lyrics to Wyatt´s songs, seems to thrive, creating less radical political statements and more abstract vistas. The music is again (as in the early days of his career) a mixture of Jazz and Prog, which is something Wyatt´s fans are most comfortable with. Much more melodic, even if still melancholic at times, this is Wyatt´s greatest musical work in his second life – music phase. The six years his fans had to wait for this album were definitely worth waiting for, with a gentler (although still strongly outspoken) Wyatt delivering what he does best – personal, straight form the heart musical gems. A triumphant return to splendid form and a minor masterpiece!
