BLODWYN PIG ~ AHEAD RINGS OUT
BGO 0054 (Barcode: 5017261200549) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2000

1st album by Blodwyn PigFind albums by this artist. After leaving Jethro TullFind albums by this artist (where he lasted only for the first album), guitarist Mick AbrahamsFind albums by this artist formed this band - one of the best ever UK Rock / Blues / Jazz bands. There is plenty of space here for Abrahams to prove his extraordinary guitar technique and feel (especially for blues), but all the other members of the group perform admirably. A masterpiece by all means.

DONOVAN ~ SUNSHINE SUPERMAN
BGO 0068 ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1967

This album is one of the greatest treasurs of UK rock and marks the entry to thy Psychedelic era. DonovanFind albums by this artist changes like a cameleon from a folk / protest singer (a la Bob Dylan) to master craftsman of beautiful pop songs, heavily spiced with Psychedelia, which is emphasized by the brilliant work of the musicians playing on the session. A treasure!

2nd album by Blodwyn PigFind albums by this artist. Very much in the same atmosphere as the debut album, with brilliant performances and great compositions. What a pity this group never acheived the greatness it so much deserved. Unfortunately this was to be the last album of the original group. Abrahams later continued to used the group`s name for his various projects.

MICK ABRAHAMS ~ MICK ABRAHAMS
BGO 0095 (Barcode: 5017261200952) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock

Recorded: 1971 Released: 1992

1st album by British guitarist / vocalist Mick AbrahamsFind albums by this artist, one of the most underrated guitar players in the history as far as I´m concerned. Abrahams first achieved recognition as a founding member of Jethro TullFind albums by this artist, with the release of their debut album "This WasFind albums with this title", where he plays some incredible guitar licks, which earned him comparisons with "God" Eric ClaptonFind albums by this artist.

A personality clash and musical differences between Abrahams and Ian AndersonFind albums by this artist led to his decision to leave Jethro Tull and form the brilliant Blodwyn PigFind albums by this artist, one of the earliest and best Jazz-Rock / Blues Fusion bands ever. The original Blodwyn Pig lineup lasted just under two years and recorded two outstanding albums, breaking up prematurely.

Abrahams then formed the Mick Abrahams BandFind albums by this artist, which is featured on this album. In later years Abrahams was to reform Blodwyn Pig and record several more album with that group (from the 1990s on) as well as leading the Mick Abrahams Band. His amazing guitar playing is unfortunately only recognized by a relatively small circle of fans, although in retrospect his consistently excellent performances in the last five decades are quite unparalleled.

This album was recorded soon after the demise of the original Blodwyn Pig and features a great lineup of Mick on guitar, Bob SargeantFind albums by this artist on keyboards and guitar, Walt MonaghanFind albums by this artist on bass and Ritchie DharmaFind albums by this artist on drums. The material, all written by Abrahams, is a great example of Blues-Rock, the genre in which Abrahams feels most comfortable. The album lost nothing of its charm and beauty and is certainly worth of an honorable place in any serious record collection.

STEPPENWOLF ~ MONSTER
BGO 0126 (Barcode: 5017261201263) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1969 Released: 1992

5th album by US Rockers extraordinaire SteppenwolfFind albums by this artist, led by charismatic lead singer John KayFind albums by this artist, who also penned most of their material, which is a great example of how Rock music became a most potent weapon during the social / political upheaval in the US at the time of its release. Most of the songs on this album are full of bitterness and sarcasm and bear strong commentary on the American political system and of course its involvement in the Vietnam War. Kay, as most rockers at the time, was a representative of the rebellious young generation, which looked upon politicians with disgust and despise, letting his opinion to be heard. Considering Rock´s immense popularity at the time, performers had a wide audience and therefore were widely influential, which was a major factor in their struggle for change.

Of course in retrospect we all know that governments remained corrupt and often immoral, but the struggle brought these issues to the awareness of an entire generation.

As to the music, it is as good as all Steppenwolf material at the time, although mostly dismissed by critics, which for some reason never really "got" the band´s fortes. This is Classic Rock, well written and well performed, which withstands the tides of time sans any inferiority complex. For the generation that never heard this music at the time it was created, here is an opportunity to plunge into history and enjoy it while doing it.

SOLID GOLD CADILLAC ~ SOLID GOLD CADILLAC / BRAIN DAMAGE
BGO 0471 (Barcode: 5017261204714) ~ UK ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1972 - 1973 Released: 1999

This is a reissue of the only two albums released in the early 1970s by the short lived British Jazz-Rock ensemble Solid Gold CadillacFind albums by this artist, led by pianist / composer Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist. The list of participating musicians reads like the Who´s Who of British Jazz / Jazz-Rock at the time: lead vocalist / trumpeter Phil MintonFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist George KhanFind albums by this artist, trombonist Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist, guitarist Dick MorecombeFind albums by this artist, Westbrook on electric piano and additional vocals, pianist Fiachra TrenchFind albums by this artist, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist and drummer Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist. Guitarist Chris SpeddingFind albums by this artist guests on two tracks on the eponymous debut album. Brian GoddingFind albums by this artist plays guitar and Butch PotterFind albums by this artist plays bass on the second album and Trench does not take part in it. The debut album offers eleven tracks and the second album offers ten tracks, almost all of which were composed by Westbrook.

The music is a zany, eclectic collection of absolutely stupendous music, light years ahead of its time at the time of the recording. It moves between Pop, Rock, Jazz-Rock, Jazz and typical Westbrook cabaret / vaudeville creations, all superbly performed by this elite team of musicians.

My recent review of Kate WestbrookFind albums by this artist´s album "GraniteFind albums with this title" struck a "memory" chord and made me to come back to these two albums, which admittedly I have not listened to in decades. It is absolutely amazing how good this music sounds today, losing nothing of its freshness and ingenuity. The sense of humor and irony are already there, playing a major role in the overall scheme of things, going hand in hand with wonderful musicality and astounding versatility.

Although Solid Gold Cadillac was only a small "sidestep" in Westbrook´s decades long career, in retrospect it proves again that he definitely is a man of the "golden touch", as far as music is concerned, and everything he created over time is able to defend its values over time.

Although this reissue is long time out of print, it is definitely worth seeking out, not only for the Westbrook devotees, but for all British Jazz / Jazz-Rock collectors, who missed this jewel so far. Wholeheartedly recommended!

SPIRIT ~ SON OF SPIRIT / FARTHER ALONG
BGO 0644 (Barcode: 5017261206442) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1975 - 1976 Released: 2004

This is a reissue of two albums by the seminal American Rock group SpiritFind albums by this artist. Those are the second and third albums released by the MercuryFind albums on this label Records label, following the five albums the group released on OdeFind albums on this label and EpicFind albums on this label labels.

"Son Of SpiritFind albums with this title" was mostly a collection of ten songs recorded during the sessions held in early 1975. These sessions, produced such an abundance of material that it did not fit on the 2LP album "Spirit of `76", which was its predecessor, and was used to create this follow up album.

The music was recorded by guitarist / composer Randy CaliforniaFind albums by this artist, who wrote almost all the songs and played most of the instruments, assisted only by Ed CassidyFind albums by this artist on drums. It emphasized California´s superb songwriting and spectacular guitar playing, often compared to that of Jimi HendrixFind albums by this artist.

The album is a masterpiece of late Psychedelic Rock. California used novel (at the time) studio techniques and completely unprecedented use of multi-layered sound effects and other studio paraphernalia. It still sounds absolutely innovative today, well over four decades later.

"Farther AlongFind albums with this title" was recorded by an almost reunited lineup of Spirit, which included apart from California and Cassidy also original members, John LockeFind albums by this artist on keyboards and Mark AndesFind albums by this artist on vocals and bass (missing only Jay FergusonFind albums by this artist from the original lineup), with Matt AndesFind albums by this artist on vocals and guitar, as well as a bunch of guest musicians. Orchestral arrangements including horn and string sections were also used on some of the songs.

The material includes twelve songs, all but one new with just one remake of an old song. As usual all the songs are originals, mostly by California or co-composed by the group members. The overall sound and atmosphere are a return to the classic Spirit albums from the first period and offers some of the best American Rock even created, and these fine musicians performing together are simply unbeatable.

Overall this is Classic Rock stuff that nobody makes today, hence an absolute must to any serious Rock fan and record collector!

SPIRIT ~ FUTURE GAMES / SPIRIT OF 84
BGO 0657 (Barcode: 5017261206572) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1976 - 1984 Released: 2005

This is a reissue of two albums by the seminal American Rock group SpiritFind albums by this artist. Those are the last two of the five albums released by the MercuryFind albums on this label Records label, following the five albums the group released on OdeFind albums on this label and EpicFind albums on this label labels. The albums are separated by seven years of hiatus, which characterized most of the late years if the group´s career.

In between these two albums Spirit released the "The Adventures Of Kaptain Kopter & Commander Cassidy In Potato LandFind albums with this title" album in 1981, which included material recorded in 1972 and 1973 and was partly re-recorded in 1981.

"Future GamesFind albums with this title", originally released in 1977, was practically a solo album by guitarist / composer Randy CaliforniaFind albums by this artist, who wrote almost all the songs and played most of the instruments, assisted only by Ed CassidyFind albums by this artist on drums and a few unspecified guests. It emphasized California´s superb songwriting and spectacular guitar playing, often compared to that of Jimi HendrixFind albums by this artist, who is given a tribute by including the Bob DylanFind albums by this artist´s "All Along The Watchtower" all time classic associated with the Godly version performed by Hendrix.

The album is a masterpiece of late Psychedelic Rock, presenting twenty-two short songs creating a fascinating Sci-Fi like story. California used novel (at the time) studio techniques and completely unprecedented use of multi-layered sound effects and other studio paraphernalia. It still sounds absolutely innovative today, well over four decades later.

"Spirit Of 84Find albums with this title", released as "The Thirteenth DreamFind albums with this title" outside of the US, was recorded by a reunited lineup of Spirit, which included apart from California and Cassidy also original members Jay FergusonFind albums by this artist on vocals and guitar, John LockeFind albums by this artist on keyboards and Mark AndesFind albums by this artist on vocals and bass, as well as a bunch of guest musicians. The original lineup was reunited for the first time since the recording of the classic "Twelve Dreams Of Dr. SardonicusFind albums with this title" album in 1970 (hence the title).

The material includes several remakes of old songs from the first four albums by the group as well as a few new songs, recorded "live in the studio". Although obviously opportunistic / nostalgia based, this is still some of the best American Rock even created, and these fine musician performing together are simply unbeatable.

Overall this is Classic Rock stuff that nobody makes today, hence an absolute must to any serious Rock fan and record collector!

MIKE WESTBROOK ~ LONDON BRIDGE IS BROKEN DOWN
BGO 0788 (Barcode: 5017261207883) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1987 Released: 2008

The second phase of Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist’s illustrious career, which was initiated around mid-1970s and continues to this day, can be characterized by his gradual shift from the big orchestral formats to much more intimate assemblages, centered around himself and his wife Kate WestbrookFind albums by this artist and including members from a steady core of musicians cooperating with them. Kate’s remarkable voice and even more remarkable personality added several new dimensions to the unique “Westbrook voicing” of musical ideas, which would become their trademark in years to come. Her extraordinary sensitivity, openness and passion for European literature and poetry and her ability to sing in French and German (in addition to English of course), combined with Mike’s sublime talent for composition, enabled them to create a vast body of work, which extends far beyond “music making” per se and transferred gradually into one of the most profound European expressions of Culture.

Although deeply rooted in Jazz, their music encompasses many additional musical areas, ranging from cabaret and chanson to contemporary Classical music. Always meticulously researched and perfectly scored, the Westbrook projects are all masterpieces of contemporary Art, way beyond straightforward music creation. One can perhaps trace these tendencies to the Jazz & Poetry amalgamations common in the early 1960s, or even much earlier examples from Classical music, which combined musical ideas with literary sources. Mike and Kate are a complete cultural phenomenon; alas a radically rare one in our times, in complete contrast to most of the “musical“ ventures polluting our ears.

The music included on this album is perhaps the most complex and ambitious project the Westbrooks have ever undertaken. Commissioned by the French Festival International de Jazz d’Amiens for the 1987 edition of the festival, it was premiered there and later recorded in Paris. The music is an extended work for two orchestras – Jazz and Symphonic – incorporating texts selected and written by Kate. The music and text were written and assembled over a period of four years (1983-1987) and inspired by the places, which the Westbrooks visited during their intensive touring voyages. The overall idea was to present a picture of Europe at the time, with its immense political, social and cultural complexity, focusing on four European Capitals (London, Prague, Berlin and Vienna) and the French Picardie Region.

Westbrook’s Jazz “orchestra” was in fact a nonet, with him on piano, Kate on vocals, Chris BiscoeFind albums by this artist on saxophones and clarinet, Peter WhymanFind albums by this artist on saxophones, Graham RussellFind albums by this artist on trumpet and flugelhorn, Paul NiemanFind albums by this artist on trombone, Brian GoddingFind albums by this artist on guitar, Steve CookFind albums by this artist on bass and Tony MarshFind albums by this artist on drums. The Mike Westbrook Orchestra and Le Sinfonietta de PicardieFind albums by this artist were both conducted by Alexandre MyratFind albums by this artist. The album was originally released in 1988 on VirginFind albums on this label as a four LP set (three and a half to be exact), but disappeared almost immediately from the shelves. Kudos to BGOFind albums on this label for reissuing this masterpiece and exposing this music to new potential listeners, nothing deserves a wider recognition than this cultural treasure. Beyond essential!

She was blessed by a wonderfully expressive voice and a superb feeling for Soul / Rhythm And Blues / Rock, which she expressed both as a backing vocalist and a lead singer.

This reissue is a wonderful reminder of these wonderful days when American Rock was most productive and capable of creating lasting music. Although Coolidge enjoyed a successful career in the years that followed these two early albums and her work with the a.m. artists are for me the pinnacle of her artistic achievements.

Overall this is a great glimpse at the days when everything sounded better, looked nicer and tasted sweeter then ever. An absolute Classic Rock bonanza!

AL DI MEOLA ~ CIELO E TERRA / SOARING THROUGH A DREAM / TIRAMI SU
BGO 0879 (Barcode: 5017261208798) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1985 - 1987 Released: 2009

Guitarist / composer Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist is a brilliant example of a musician, who never stands still and keeps changing and improving in time, rather than hanging on to the fame and success achieved in a distant past. A superb Master of his instrument, Di Meola´s journey through music is an epic story beginning in the early 1970s in the epicenter of the then exploding Fusion movement as a member of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist, and continuing with a long succession of solo recordings, which is now in its 4th decade.

This brilliant reissue covers the transitional period in Di Meola´s career in the mid-1980s, when he was moving away from Fusion deeper and deeper into his own unique niche, which combines Jazz and World Music, creating some of the most beautiful music imaginable. Included here are all three albums Di Meola recorded for the ManhattanFind albums on this label Records label, which clearly show his transition as well as the gradual switch to acoustic guitar. Although quite different from each other, the logical development is clearly omnipresent and quite fascinating.

The three albums were recorded in three different settings: the first is a duet, the second a quintet and the last a septet, with some superb musicians taking part: the great Brazilian percussionist Airto MoreiraFind albums by this artist, drummer Danny GottliebFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Kei AkagiFind albums by this artist, bassist Harvey SwartzFind albums by this artist, percussionist Mino CineluFind albums by this artist and other distinguished players. Almost all of the music included here was composed by Di Meola, with just a few exceptions, all of it brilliant and moving. AMAZING BLONDEL ~ ENGLAND / BLONDEL
BGO 0914 (Barcode: 5017261209146) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1972 - 1973 Released: 2010

4th and 5th albums by British band Amazing BlondelFind albums by this artist, which were quite an unusual "bird" among the flourishing UK Folk-Rock flock in the late 1960s / early 1970s. Although many British bands often relied on traditional folk material and even went back several centuries in search for inspiration (PentangleFind albums by this artist, Fairport ConventionFind albums by this artist, GryphonFind albums by this artist and even Jethro TullFind albums by this artist), none of them dedicated their entire musical scope to English Early Music, Elizabethan song and minstrelsy, which is exactly what Amazing Blondel did. Formed by Terry WincottFind albums by this artist and John GladwinFind albums by this artist, the band was soon after expanded to a trio with the addition of Eddie BairdFind albums by this artist. The duo managed to record the debut album "The Amazing Blondel And A Few FacesFind albums with this title" for the obscure BellFind albums on this label label and after expanding to a trio they joined the roster of IslandFind albums on this label Records, recording a series of albums for that label, of which the two albums included here were the last. The very fact that a major record label would sign such an unusual fact is a reflection of the times and the character of the legendary Island owner Chris BlackwellFind albums by this artist, who collected on his label a staggering crew of music makers, promoting music on the basis of its merit rather than on its commercial potential – happy and sadly long time gone reality. These two albums are some of the most memorable and unusual musical documents of that era of Artistic freedom. "EnglandFind albums with this title" features music, almost entirely written by Gladwin, who also sings the lead vocals, is completely acoustic and played on instruments, which were used centuries ago and based entirely on the English Early Music format. The lyrics are also kept in the general spirit of the era, spiced with humorous tongue in cheek tidbits. "BlondelFind albums with this title", recorded following Gladwin´s departure from the group, is slightly more Rocky and features Steve WinwoodFind albums by this artist on bass guitar and Simon KirkeFind albums by this artist (FreeFind albums by this artist) on drums as well as many other guest artists including Paul RodgersFind albums by this artist, who sings on one track. In retrospect these two albums remain an ageless masterpiece, unrivaled to this very day and I can hardly imagine any Folk-Rock enthusiast´s record collection, which does not include them. For people who never came across this band before, this reissue is a splendid opportunity to fill a gap, which is unforgettable. Grab it!

AL DI MEOLA ~ SPLENDIDO HOTEL / ELECTRIC RENDEZVOUS
BGO 0927 (Barcode: 5017261209276) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1980 - 1982 Released: 2010

This is a reissue / remaster of the 4th and 5th studio albums by American guitarist / composer Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist: “Splendido HotelFind albums with this title” from 1980 and “Electric RendezvousFind albums with this title” from 1982, released on ColumbiaFind albums on this label Records. He is supported by his regular band at the time with keyboardist Philippe SaisseFind albums by this artist, bassist Tim LandersFind albums by this artist, drummer Robbie GonzalesFind albums by this artist and percussionist Eddie ColonFind albums by this artist. Many guest artists appear on these albums, including pianist Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Jan HammerFind albums by this artist, bassist Anthony JacksonFind albums by this artist, drummer Steve GaddFind albums by this artist, guitarist Paco De LuciaFind albums by this artist, percussionist Mingo LewisFind albums by this artist and others. “Splendido Hotel”, originally a 2LP album, presents eleven tracks, seven composed by De Meola, one co-composed with Saisse, one by Saisse, one by Corea and one a pop standard. “Electric Rendezvous” presents eight tracks, five composed by Di Meola, and one each by Saisse, Hammer and Lewis.

The music is the usual splendid mixture of superb melodies, Jazz licks, Fusion Groove and Spanish / Latin / Mediterranean / Flamenco Folkloristic accents, which was De Meola’s home turf. There is plenty of brilliant guitar playing by Di Meola and excellent parts by the guest artists, and although these two albums are not surprising or innovative as far as Di Meola’s output in the first decade of his career is concerned, they withstand the test of time splendidly and still sound great today.

Overall, this is a marvelous reminder of the early days of Di Meola’s recording career, full of virtuosity, superb compositions and passionate performances by him and his cohorts, which were the leading American Fusion musicians at the time. They are a must in any serious Jazz-Rock Fusion / Jazz-World Fusion record collection.

DREAMS ~ DREAMS / IMAGINE MY SURPRISE
BGO 0940 (Barcode: 5017261209405) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2010

The fantastic US Jazz-Rock ensemble DreamsFind albums by this artist, which unfortunately recorded only two albums, both included here, was one of the best examples of the American branch of Brass-Rock, a relatively short-lived sub genre of Jazz-Rock, which also included such superb ensembles like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist and a few others. Dreams originated in NY and had a somewhat flexible lineup of associated musicians, but the importance of these two albums is mainly due to the fact that they provided a debut recording opportunity to some of the genre´s most iconic figures: brothers -Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist (saxophone) and Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist (trumpet) - and drummer Billy CobhamFind albums by this artist. Other Dreams members were already established figures on the scene, like bassist Doug LubahnFind albums by this artist (DoorsFind albums by this artist), guitarist John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist and keyboardist Don GrolnickFind albums by this artist. Other group members were keyboardist / guitarist Jeff KentFind albums by this artist, trombonist Barry RogersFind albums by this artist, vocalist Edward VernonFind albums by this artist, bassist Will LeeFind albums by this artist and guitarist / trumpeter Bob MannFind albums by this artist. Musically the group mixed genres freely, with Jazz, Funk, Rock and Soul adopted at will and beautifully arranged to create some of the most memorable sounds of the period. The music is just perfect; although spontaneous and improvised, every note is just exactly where it belongs, every drum beat precisely on time, every phrase brilliantly placed, every tempo change and every instrumental solo and above all the overall interplay are just what a music fun needs – pure genius. It is hard to believe that a bunch of young musician was capable of producing such magnificent music, but then on the other hand considering that Dreams seeded Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, Brecker BrothersFind albums by this artist and many other heroes of the Jazz and Fusion scene, perhaps one should not wonder. I own both these albums since the day they were released and have listened to them repeatedly over the years, always enjoying myself immensely and it was me who suggested to BGOFind albums on this label to reissue them – I´m glad they did! Now many more potential listeners have the opportunity to hear them as well – enjoy as this is essential stuff!

KENNY WHEELER ~ WINDMILL TILTER
BGO 0944 (Barcode: 5017261209443) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1968 Released: 2010

Canadian-born trumpeter / composer Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist arrived in London in 1952 and soon found himself emerged in the lively local Jazz scene. Playing with many different ensembles active at the time, he slowly earned the position of the country´s most respected, reliable and talented Jazz player. By the end of the 1950s Wheeler started an association with saxophonist /composer / bandleader Johnny DankworthFind albums by this artist, playing in his various ensembles, which would last for the next decade. In 1968 Dankworth suggested to Wheeler that he´d used a three months period of recovery from a surgery to compose a suite for a Jazz group and orchestra, a suggestion Wheeler accepted with open hands. The result was the magnificent piece of music presented here, based on the tragic story of Don Quixote. Performed by a quintet, which comprised of Wheeler, saxophonist / clarinetist Tony CoeFind albums by this artist, guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist and drummer John SpoonerFind albums by this artist and the Johnny Dankworth Orchestra, this milestone of British Jazz remains every bit as much relevant today as it was at the time of its recording. Similar in spirit to the Miles DavisFind albums by this artist / Gil EvansFind albums by this artist classic "Sketches Of SpainFind albums with this title", the suite firmly establishes Wheeler´s position as a major player on the global Jazz scene, which of course was reaffirmed time and again in years to come. This reissue, long time overdue, brings back to life an incredible treasure and listening to it makes life worth living!

CLOUDS ~ UP ABOVE OUR HEADS (CLOUDS 1966-71)
BGO 0966 (Barcode: 5017261209665) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1967 - 1971 Released: 2010

This album collects the entire recorded legacy of the great British Prog group CloudsFind albums by this artist, which includes their two UK albums "ScrapbookFind albums with this title" and "Watercolour DaysFind albums with this title" and the US-only album "Up Above Our HeadsFind albums with this title", as well as singles and previously unreleased tracks. Clouds were a trio and consisted of keyboardist Billy RitchieFind albums by this artist, bassist Ian EllisFind albums by this artist and drummer Harry HughesFind albums by this artist. Following the model of other British keyboard trios like NiceFind albums by this artist and Emerson, Lake & PalmerFind albums by this artist, the group´s focus were the spectacular and extended keyboard solos, but they also had an excellent ability to write material and the rhythm section supported the main soloist admirably. It remains a complete mystery why the group never achieved the recognition it deserved at the time, but in retrospect they are as good as any of the other artists that were successful. This anthology is a great way to get everything they recorded in one package and is wholeheartedly recommended to all Prog fans.

HOLLIES ~ BUS STOP / STOP! STOP! STOP!
BGO 0968 (Barcode: 5017261209689) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1966 Released: 2011

This album combines the 4th and 5th LPs by the British group The HolliesFind albums by this artist, released in the USA on the Imperial label. As it often happened during the British Invasion days, the US and domestic UK releases by British groups were quite different, as witnessed here. “Bus StopFind albums with this title” was a compilation album of sorts, including the group’s monster hit of the same title and adding some B-sides and songs previously unreleased in the US but present on the UK albums. Of course considering how great the group was, even though this was a “leftovers” compilation album, it was incredibly strong. “Stop! Stop! Stop!Find albums with this title” was the first US release, which was an exact replica of a UK release, with only the album’s title changed (the UK release was entitled “For Certain Because…Find albums with this title”). This album was the first release to feature entirely original material written by Allan ClarkeFind albums by this artist, Tony HicksFind albums by this artist and Graham NashFind albums by this artist and is a giant step in British Rock in every respect. The sophistication of the melody lines, the absolutely perfect vocal harmonies and the intricate instrumental accompaniment place The Hollies at the top of the British pack, way ahead of The BeatlesFind albums by this artist and other contemporaries, who are considered as the main heroes. The better the historic perspective becomes the clearer it is that The Holies were just better then anybody at what they did.

GRAHAM COLLIER ~ SYMPHONY OF SCORPIONS / THE DAY OF THE DEAD
BGO 1028 (Barcode: 5017261210289) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1976 - 1978 Released: 2011

Composer / arranger / bandleader / bassist Graham CollierFind albums by this artist, a dear personal friend of mine who died in 2011, is one of the Godfathers of modern British Jazz, and his contribution to the genre as a musician, educator and writer are monumental. Although initially schooled in the US (Collier was the first student from the UK to be awarded a scholarship at the Berklee School of Music in Boston in the 1960s), he was in fact one of the pioneers of the European Jazz, accepting the American Jazz tradition as a basis for further development and exploration based on the European cultural heritage. His innovative approach as a composer and arranger were immensely influential not only on the local British scene, but also throughout the entire Europe, especially his usage of irregular meters and time signatures. Over the years Collier composed and recorded a colossal body of work, which includes some of the greatest music of the 20th Century.

This album, which is a fourth installment and a companion to the three previous BGO reissues of his early recordings, includes the last two recordings by Collier released on his own record label MosaicFind albums on this label Records, one of the first independently owned Jazz labels in Britain. He composed all the music presented here and plays bass on the first recordings (something he was to abandon in the future) and the lineups of the three ensembles include some of the greatest players on the British scene at the time: Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist, Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist (trombone), Alan WakemanFind albums by this artist, Mike PageFind albums by this artist, Art ThemenFind albums by this artist (saxophone), Ed SpeightFind albums by this artist (guitar), Roger DeanFind albums by this artist (piano), Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist (bass) and Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist, John WebbFind albums by this artist (drums). Many of these players were to become future leaders of course, as Collier’s ensembles served as an excellent breeding ground for young players, similar to what happened on the Blues scene with John MayallFind albums by this artist’s ensembles.

Both these releases were inspired by the works of British poet and novelist Malcolm LowryFind albums by this artist, one of the most innovative writers of the 20th Century. "The Day Of The DeadFind albums with this title" (originally released as a double LP) includes extended fragments from Lowry´s masterpiece "Under The Volcano" and his other writings, narrated by John CarberyFind albums by this artist on top of the music performed by the band. Both works rank amongst Collier´s greatest achievements and his most adventurous recordings, with a loose composed frame and extensive group improvisations.

Collier is often called the Charles MingusFind albums by this artist of European Jazz, and the parallels are obvious. The music is of course absolutely stunning, from start to finish, and brilliantly performed. Every moment on this album is just right, brilliant and timeless, which makes it not only a perfect document of the era, but also a piece of music that retains its intrinsic values forever. Absolutely essential!

MARTY BALIN ~ BALIN / LUCKY
BGO 1079 (Barcode: 5017261210791) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1981 - 1982 Released: 2013

This is a reissue of the first two solo albums by American vocalist / guitarist / songwriter Marty BalinFind albums by this artist, primarily known as a founding member and one of lead vocalists of the seminal group Jefferson AirplaneFind albums by this artist and later Jefferson StarshipFind albums by this artist. Following his departure from the latter Balin started a solo career, which continues for many years. He died in 2018 leaving behind a glorious legacy in Rock music.

"BalinFind albums with this title", released originally in 1981, featured a team of highly talented but relatively anonymous musicians and presented nine songs, three of which were written by Jesse BarishFind albums by this artist (two of which charted as singles) and only one song was composed by Balin. In an attempt to disassociate his solo career from the Jefferson image, the material was much more "commercial", but his heartfelt vocals and excellent choice of material as well as the superb musicianship produced a Classic Rock gem.

"LuckyFind albums with this title", released in 1983, followed the same pattern as its predecessor, presenting ten excellent songs (one each by Balin and Barish). The album and the singles did not chart, but the music was every bit as good, only the times were changing.

Overall Balin had one of the most expressive voices of the American Rock and his legacy deserves to be remembered, not only because of nostalgic reasons, but primarily for its quality. They don´t make music like this any more.

MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ M. F. HORN / M. F. HORN 2 / M. F. HORN 3
BGO 1110 (Barcode: 5017261211101) ~ CANADA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1970 - 1973 Released: 2013

This is a reissue of three albums by Canadian Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist. These are the second, fourth and fifth albums Ferguson recorded for CBSFind albums on this label in UK after he signed with the label in late 1968, following his move to the UK from India. The first two albums were produced by the brilliant arranger / conductor Keith MansfieldFind albums by this artist, who worked with Ferguson on all his UK recordings except the last, i.e. the third album included here, which was produced by Teo MaceroFind albums by this artist and which was mostly recorded in UK and had some minor touches added later in the US. "M. F. HornFind albums with this title" was released as "The World Of Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title" in the US.

Upon his arrival in UK Ferguson made a dramatic shift in his approach to the Big Band Jazz he played for so many years previously. Influenced by what was happening in music at the time, especially the birth of Jazz-Rock Fusion, and the Brass Rock ensembles like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist, FlockFind albums by this artist and many others, he was determined to pursue this new direction as well. Obviously the British scene was a highly fertile ground, with many British Jazz musicians already very much involved in that idiom. The "M. F. Horn" series of albums reflects that glorious period perfectly!

The first two "M. F. Horn" albums and the album "Alive & Well In LondonFind albums with this title" (released as "Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title" in the US), which was "sandwiched" between them, follow a similar formula of presenting a mixture of wonderful arrangements of popular songs and original compositions, arranged by Mansfield, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, Adrian DroverFind albums by this artist and John CameronFind albums by this artist and performed by a dreamy band that features such luminaries as trombonists Chris PyneFind albums by this artist and Derek WadsworthFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Pete KingFind albums by this artist and Brian SmithFind albums by this artist, pianist Pete JacksonFind albums by this artist, percussionist Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist and other top British Jazz players at the time.

"M. F. Horn 3Find albums with this title" is somewhat different in the choice of material, as it does not include covers of popular material but includes soundtracks, Jazz standards and no less than three original compositions by pianist Pete Jackson. It is generally considered as the Jazziest album of the "M. F. Horn" series, probably due to the fact that Macero produced it, but in retrospect it is undoubtedly an integral part of the same musical direction and spirit.

Overall these albums are great piece of the Ferguson´s recorded legacy, which is certainly worth being remembered. The magic Brass Rock / British Big Band period is certainly a pinnacle of his creativity, and a superb addition to the idiom, which has a lasting value and deserves an honorable place in any serious music collection. An absolute must!

This is a reissue of three albums by Canadian Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist released on ColumbiaFind albums on this label during the late part of his stint with the label: "Primal ScreamFind albums with this title" (1976), "New VintageFind albums with this title" (1977) and "CarnivalFind albums with this title" (1978). These albums feature some of the best American Jazz musicians active at the time and mark Ferguson´s commercial success and popularity, well beyond the strict Jazz circles. Among the artists appearing on these albums are: keyboardists Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Bob JamesFind albums by this artist, drummers Steve GaddFind albums by this artist and Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist, guitarists Eric GaleFind albums by this artist and Steve KhanFind albums by this artist, saxophonists David SanbornFind albums by this artist and Joe FarrellFind albums by this artist, trumpeters Marvin StammFind albums by this artist and Jon FaddisFind albums by this artist and many others.

The music is a mixture of original compositions by Ferguson and the composer / arranger Jay ChattawayFind albums by this artist, Jazz standards, film themes, popular songs and Classical pieces, all superbly arranged and executed by the Big Band / Orchestra, with soaring solos by Ferguson the guest stars. Although definitely on the lighter side of the Jazz spectrum, mixing Jazz with Funk, Rock and even Reggae, the music was always tasteful and impeccably executed.

Ferguson´s piercing trumpet sound is still one of the most recognizable sounds in American Jazz and remains unparalleled to this very day.

Personally I have always found the music of Ferguson to be both highly entertaining and artistically relevant, offering classy performances with stand the test of time with ease. Highly recommended!

MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ CHAMELEON / CONQUISTADOR / HOT
BGO 1199 (Barcode: 5017261211996) ~ CANADA ~ Jazz

This is a reissue of three albums by Canadian trumpeter / composer / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist released on ColumbiaFind albums on this label during his 1970s stint with label: "ChameleonFind albums with this title" (1974), "ConquistadorFind albums with this title" (1977) and "HotFind albums with this title" (1979). These albums feature some of the best American Jazz musicians at the time and mark Ferguson´s peak commercial success and popularity, well beyond the strict Jazz circles.

Following Ferguson´s revolutionary recordings in the UK during the late 1960s and early 1970s, called the "M. F. HornFind albums with this title" albums, which featured a superb Big Band comprised of top British Jazz musicians at the time, and which defined the Jazz-Rock Fusion Big Band sound, he returned to the US in 1973 continuing the "M. F. Horn" series and than recording the first album on this reissue set, which also continued the Jazz-Rock direction.

The other two albums included here present a more commercial approach emphasized by the phenomenal success of the "Rocky" movie theme (entitled "Gonna Fly Now"), which charted as a single not only on the US Jazz charts, but also on the US Pop charts. However, despite the more commercial approach, these albums still offer superb Jazz performances, first-rate Big Band arrangements and brilliant soloing.

The music on these albums remains completely timeless and offers some of the most exciting Big Band recordings made in the US, featuring exquisite arrangements and excellent soloing by the leader and other musicians.

MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ THE BALLAD STYLE OF MAYNARD FERGUSON / ALIVE & WELL IN LONDON
BGO 1206 (Barcode: 5017261212061) ~ CANADA ~ Brass Rock

This is a reissue of two albums by Canadian Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist. These are the first and third albums Ferguson recorded for CBSFind albums on this label in UK after he signed with the label in late 1968, following his move to the UK from India. Obviously the British scene was a highly fertile ground, with many British Jazz musicians already very much involved in that idiom.

However his ambitions had to be postponed for a while, due to the fact that CBS was mostly a Pop / MOR repertoire oriented label and wanted, at least until the label heads could be persuaded otherwise, start Ferguson´s CBS stretch with a much more commercial recording, which resulted in the recording of "The Ballad Style Of Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title". The material consisted of eleven arrangements of well known movie themes and other popular songs, but in the capable hands of Mansfield and his superb orchestra, which included some of the best British Jazz musicians at the time, and of course Ferguson´s fabulous trumpet playing characterized by the piercing high notes, the album, although certainly widely appealing, remains a masterpiece of Jazz flavored popular orchestral music.

"Alive & Well In LondonFind albums with this title" (a.k.a. "Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title") is a completely different story. It followed the recording of the second album for CBS entitled "M. F. HornFind albums with this title" (a.k.a. GARY BURTON ~ SOMETHING`S COMING! / THE GROOVY SOUND OF MUSIC / THE TIME MACHINE
BGO 1241 (Barcode: 5017261212412) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1963 - 1966 Released: 2016

This is a reissue of three early albums by the legendary American Jazz vibraphonist / composer Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist (his third to fifth albums): "Something`s Coming!Find albums with this title" from 1964, "The Groovy Sound Of MusicFind albums with this title" from 1965 and "The Time MachineFind albums with this title" from 1966.

"Something`s Coming!" was recorded in a quartet setting with guitarist Jim HallFind albums by this artist, bassist Chuck IsraelsFind albums by this artist and drummer Larry BunkerFind albums by this artist. It presents seven pieces, two of which are original compositions by British composer Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, one is by Hall and the remaining four are standards.

"The Groovy Sound Of Music", as the title suggests, includes Burton interpretations of eight songs from the musical "The Sound Of Music", recorded in a sextet setting with trombonist Bob BrookmeyerFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Phil WoodsFind albums by this artist, guitarist Joe PumaFind albums by this artist, bassist Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist and alternating drummers Joe HuntFind albums by this artist and Ed ShaughnessyFind albums by this artist.

"The Time Machine" was recorded in a trio setting with bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Larry Bunker. It presents ten pieces, four of which are original compositions by Burton, two by Gibbs, one by Swallow and the remaining three are standards.

These wonderful albums tell the story of the early days of Burton´s musical development and already point out towards several characteristics of his music in the later years, like his close friendship and cooperation with composer Michael Gibbs, his close association with bassist Steve Swallow, who would continue to record with Burton for many years, his appreciation and understanding of the role of the guitar in Jazz, which will soon after lead to his revolutionary cooperation with Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist and the birth of the American Jazz-Rock Fusion, etc.

Whereas the first two albums find Burton still engulfed in Bebop and Cool Jazz, the third album is distinctly different and shows his individual voice and stylistic differentiation from mainstream Jazz, which shifts into more sophisticated approach both as a player and a composer, which would eventually bring Burton to be much closer to European Jazz than almost any other of his compatriots.

Although these albums were recorded fifty years ago, they all sound absolutely fresh today and the music lost absolutely nothing of its wonderful vitality, musicality and exquisite taste. For Burton and vibraphone fans this is an absolute essential piece of Jazz history, but all music connoisseurs should find it absolutely delightful. Not to be missed!

This album marks almost the end of Ferguson´s love affair with the Brass Rock / Jazz-Rock Fusion, which would be finalized by the recording of "ChameleonFind albums with this title" album a year later. The rest of Ferguson´s 1970s recordings on Columbia will be more commercially oriented, but still full of great performances and excellent music.

GARY WRIGHT ~ THE DREAM WEAVER / THE LIGHT OF SMILES / TOUCH AND GONE / HEADIN` HOME
BGO 1334 (Barcode: 5017261213341) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1975 - 1979 Released: 2018

This is a reissue of the third to sixth albums by American vocalist / keyboardist / songwriter Gary WrightFind albums by this artist, recorded after his return to the US following several years he spent in the UK. Wright was a founding member of the legendary Progressive Rock group Spooky ToothFind albums by this artist, where he was the lead singer, organ player and principal songwriter. Following the first breakup of the group Wright recorded his first two solo albums, and later re-united Spooky Tooth, which disbanded again in 1974. The four albums included here, recorded between 1975 and 1979, are newly remastered and offer an excellent sound quality.

These four albums present a unique approach to Rock music, based mainly on extensive use of acoustic and electronic keyboard instruments, and the music included on the first three albums is performed entirely, except for the drum parts, using a plethora of keyboard instruments played by Wright and other keyboardists like David FosterFind albums by this artist, Bobby LyleFind albums by this artist, Peter ReilichFind albums by this artist and others. Only the last of the albums included here includes guitars and other instruments.

Wright is an extraordinary songweaver and his wonderful songs are among the finest Classic Rock ever produced. Combined with his superb vocal qualities and virtuosic keyboard performances he is a true Master of the trade. His music is deeply influenced by Blues, Soul, Rhythm And Blues and Rock, which he manages to amalgamate into a completely personal songwriting style, which suits his theatrical vocal pyrotechnics ideally.

Although his work with Spooky Tooth is perhaps in retrospect his most ambitious and rewarding, his solo albums offer a remarkable collection of Classic Rock, sadly almost completely forgotten today. This reissue is a splendid occasion to revisit this music for those who heard it originally at the time it was first released and for younger listeners a window of opportunity to discover true music, nothing like what passes as music today.

However, on the next three albums – the last two of which were recorded during the same session and were intended initially to be released as a double album – he is joined by a dreamy team of the crème de la crème of British Jazz musicians at the time, which includes arranger Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, Geoff HawkinsFind albums by this artist, Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist, and Tony CoeFind albums by this artist, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist, bassists Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist and Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist, drummer Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist, vocal Diva Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist and many others, a truly unprecedented gathering.

Those albums are dominated by Cooper´s idiosyncratic songwriting, guitar playing and singing, and still deeply rooted in the Blues, but the instrumental parts offer some blood-curdling goodies, which no British Jazz fan wants to miss.

Considering how obscure and impossible to find these albums are this monumental reissue is a true godsend, done in the best tradition of BGOFind albums on this label Records´ mission to unearth music that should be given another chance.

Absolutely not to be missed!

GARY PUCKETT & THE UNION GAP ~ WOMAN, WOMAN / THE NEW GARY PUCKETT & THE UNION GAP ALBUM / THE GARY PUCKETT ALBUM
BGO 1374 (Barcode: 5017261213747) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1967 - 1971 Released: 2019

This is a reissue of the first and fourth albums by the American Pop / Rock group Gary Puckett & The Union GapFind albums by this artist, and the first solo album by the charismatic vocalist / guitarist / songwriter Gary PuckettFind albums by this artist, recorded after the group disbanded. These remastered albums are expanded with eight non-album singles added as bonus tracks.

The group was discovered by ColumbiaFind albums on this label producer / songwriter Jerry FullerFind albums by this artist, who wrote a chain of successful chart hits for them, which remain as some of the Popular Music evergreens to this very day. Puckett was blessed with a velvet tenor voice and a superb Pop sensitivity, which turned every song he performed into an irresistible melodic gem. In time the group wanted to sing more ambitious original material, which sadly resulted in loosing the successful charting image and led to their disbanding in 1971, after recording just four excellent albums.

Following the modest success of his debut album Puckett left the music business for a while and returned a decade later, performing occasionally to this very day.

In retrospect these albums offer the best American Pop / Rock had to offer at the late 1960s / early 1970s; based on superbly weaved melodies, great arrangements and production and of course outstanding vocal performances. This music lost absolutely nothing of its sparkling beauty over time and still is a great fun to listen to. One wishes at least some of this talent and dedication could be found in contemporary music; alas it seems to be completely lost in the tides of time. Puckett´s vocals have had very little competition over the years within the Pop / Rock idiom and are a sad reminder of the glory days.

For Classic Rock lovers, this stuff is absolutely essential!

BOX TOPS ~ THE LETTER * NEON RAINBOW / CRY LIKE A BABY / NON STOP / DIMENSIONS
BGO 1400 (Barcode: 5017261214003) ~ USA ~ Classic Pop

Recorded: 1967 - 1969 Released: 2020

This is a reissue of the four albums by American Pop group The Box TopsFind albums by this artist, fronted by the charismatic deep-throated vocalist Alex ChiltonFind albums by this artist. The group enjoyed an unexpected international success with their single "The Letter" and continued their activity for about a couple of years, releasing for LPs. This remastered reissue includes these four LPs and all known early non-album recordings as bonus tracks, accompanied by a booklet with well written and well researched liner notes.

The Box Tops were a typical American blue-eyed soul outfit influenced by the British Invasion. As most Pop groups at the time they performed songs written by their producers, such as Dan PennFind albums by this artist, Spooner OldhamFind albums by this artist and Chips MomanFind albums by this artist, or covers of songs by other artists, but in time Chilton started to write original songs, which were included on the two last albums.

Although musically somewhat simplistic, in retrospect these songs are all a classics example of American Pop at the time and sound remarkably fresh today, especially in view of what passes as music these days. Chilton´s contributions remain as some of the most iconic vocal performances of American Pop.

For more experienced listeners these albums are a remarkable example of the Memphis Sound, with the typical arrangements and instrumental work that characterized the Memphis studios at the time, which over time produced a massive part of American Pop.

Overall this is a wonderful trip back in time, which offers a glance at American Pop at one of its focal periods and a great collection of songs, which is definitely worth revisiting. I definitely had a blast with this album!

ZAWINUL SYNDICATE ~ BLACK WATER / LOST TRIBES
BGO 1417 (Barcode: 5017261214171) ~ AUSTRIA ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion

Recorded: 1989 - 1992 Released: 2020

This is a reissue of the second and third albums released on the ColumbiaFind albums on this label label by The Zawinul SyndicateFind albums by this artist, the ensemble led by Austrian keyboardist / composer Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist, following the cessation of the legendary Weather ReportFind albums by this artist. The ensemble continued the musical path of the late period Weather Report, mixing Jazz-Rock Fusion with World Music and Pop elements. Veteran Zawinul was supported by much younger American musicians and the lineup of the ensemble changed over time several times.

"Black WaterFind albums with this title", released in 1989, features guitarist Scott HendersonFind albums by this artist, bassist Gerald VeasleyFind albums by this artist, drummer Cornell RochesterFind albums by this artist and percussionist Munyungo JacksonFind albums by this artist, with occasional vocal parts by Lynne Fiddmont-LinseyFind albums by this artist and other vocalists. The album presents nine tracks, seven of which are original compositions by Zawinul and two are arrangements by compositions by Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist.

"Lost TribesFind albums with this title", released in 1992, features new members: guitarist Randy BernsenFind albums by this artist, drummer Mike BakerFind albums by this artist and percussionist Bobby Thomas, Jr.Find albums by this artist, with Veasley on bass but also playing keyboards alongside the leader. The album presents ten original compositions, nine by Zawinul and one by Veasley.

Following the third album Zawinul and his ensemble was dropped by Columbia and recorded a few additional albums on small independent labels until his death at the age of 75 in 2007.

These two albums perfectly reflect Zawinul´s genius as a composer and performer and his everlasting search for new forms of expression and his exploration of worldwide influences. In retrospect this music sounds significantly better than how it appeared at the time of its release, dismissed by critics and fans as way to commercial. But in truth it sounds today quite visionary, especially in comparison to what people call music today. The ensemble was a first rate live act, which I was lucky to catch several times, and managed to restore similar energies as live shows by Weather Report.

Considering that the original copies of these two albums are quite difficult to find, this remastered reissue is a true Godsend. Wholeheartedly recommended!

DAVID CLAYTON-THOMAS ~ DAVID CLAYTON-THOMAS / TEQUILA SUNRISE / DAVID CLAYTON-THOMAS
BGO 1424 (Barcode: 5017261214249) ~ CANADA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1971 - 1973 Released: 2020

This is a reissue of the first three solo albums by Canadian vocalist / songwriter David Clayton-ThomasFind albums by this artist primarily known as the frontman of the legendary Brass Rock ensemble Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist. Although purist might contest that Clayton-Thomas made some recordings in Canada in 1965 and 1966, before joining BS&T, these were done with his early ensembles and were not solo albums, but were partly released in 1969 under his name, after his popularity soared due to the success of BS&T, but should not be considered as part of his solo career.

The first eponymous album was recorded in late 1971 / early 1972 and released by ColumbiaFind albums on this label later that year. It presents ten songs, only two of which were written by Clayton-Thomas. The music was superbly arranged and included string and brass section and some top Jazz and studio musicians. The material spanned Blues, Soul and Rhythm And Blues, with the usual heartfelt vocals, which are amongst the finest ever on the Rock scene.

The next album was recorded and released by the end of the same year (1972), also by Columbia. It was recorded by a much tighter ensemble of excellent instrumentalists and offers a Funky / Soul oriented feel. It presents eleven songs (one repeated twice) most of which are written by Clayton-Thomas.

The third album, which was also eponymous but is often referred also as "Harmony Junction" to avoid confusion, was recorded and released the following year (1973) by RCAFind albums on this label. It features a similar team of musicians as the second album and presents ten songs, three of which are written by Clayton-Thomas.

All three albums were excellently remastered and the third album is released here on CD for the first time. This set offers one bonus track, one side of a 1983 single.

For me Clayton-Thomas always possessed one of the most distinct and magnificent voices ever and I could never get enough of his singing, although some critics have often ridiculed him cruelly – well as usual, most critics are completely deaf anyway. For people who love Blood, Sweat & Tears this is an absolute must, others might perhaps discover a gem they have been missing in their life? Wholeheartedly recommended!

And of course five decades later David Clayton-Thomas is still recording albums and singing as magnificently as always!

GRASS ROOTS ~ WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I NEEDED YOU / LET`S LIVE FOR TODAY / FEELINGS / LOVIN` THINGS
BGO 1478 (Barcode: 5017261214782) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1966 - 1969 Released: 2022

This is a reissue / remaster of the first four albums by the American Pop / Rock group The Grass RootsFind albums by this artist, released between 1966 and 1969 on DunhillFind albums on this label Records. On the first two albums most of the songs were written by the songwriting duo P. F. SloanFind albums by this artist and Steve BarriFind albums by this artist and on the next albums the group members wrote most of their own songs. The 2CD album presents a total of forty-seven tracks.

The music offers a typical 1960s Pop / Rock sound, with excellent, highly melodic songs, vocal harmonies and clever arrangements, which resulted in chart success, including gold discs. Although they were never as sophisticated as some of their contemporaries, in retrospect these songs are part of a soundtrack on an era, which goes way beyond straightforward nostalgia. The music was simply so much better at the time, that in comparison to contemporary Pop it is simply infinitely more satisfying.

Despite numerous personnel changes, the group continued to record three further albums for Dunhill (those are combined on another 2CD reissue / remaster set), before switching labels, and in fact continue to play live even today as an oldies show.

Overall, this is a great reminder of the times when Pop / Rock music sounded really cool, and offered satisfaction, which lasts for decades. Revisiting these album was a great fun, bringing back many songs I have forgotten, but which sound as great today as they did when I was a teenager.

BGO 1500 (Barcode: 5017261215000) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Pop Fusion

Recorded: 1964 - 1966 Released: 2022

This is a reissue / remaster 2CD album by British vocalist / organist / songwriter Georgie FameFind albums by this artist, my favorite British vocalist of all time. It includes Fame’s first two US albums “Yeh YehFind albums with this title” and “Get AwayFind albums with this title” and the UK collection of non-album tracks “Hall Of FameFind albums with this title”, as well as nine bonus tracks, which are A and B sides of singles not included on LPs, all recorded between 1964 and 1966. At that time the LPs of British artists released in the US were often quite different from those released originally in the UK. This album offers an excellent sound quality thanks to the careful remastering.

Fame, who managed to develop a stellar career very early in his life, made a consistent transformation from a Pop and Rhythm And Blues artists into a full-fledged Jazz artist later on in his career and recorded an astonishing legacy of superb albums over the years. These early tracks already clearly show the direction and the strong Jazz influence which was a part of his music from the very start, and are a wonderful trip down the memory lane. Fame was always a sublime songweaver and his original material sounds today every bit as strong as it did almost sixty years ago. He was also a very gifted organist and his organ solos were a part of his irresistible charm.

Overall, this is a superb collection of early Georgie Fame recordings, which sounds as good as it did way over half a Century ago. Fame’s unique vocals, Jazzy phrasing and incredible melodic sensibilities managed to create an enchanting sound, which to this day remains unbeaten by any of his successors.

It was recorded in a quintet setting with Browne, Griffin, guitarist Jamie GlaserFind albums by this artist and keyboardist Wally MinkoFind albums by this artist. A few guest musicians appear on selected tracks. The album presents nine tracks, eight of which are original compositions by Ponty and one is his interpretation of a Classical piece. The music follows a similar pattern to that found on the preceding album, mixing Fusion and more contemporary Ambient an even Techno influences.

TchokolaFind albums with this title” from 1991 was the third and last album on Columbia. It was recorded with several West African musicians and offers a Jazz-World Fusion project, which explores the rich rhythmic background of that region. The album presents ten tracks, all composed by Ponty or co-composed by him and the musicians playing on the album. The music is very different from everything Ponty created earlier on, showing his artistic diversity and constant passion to discover new musical ventures.

Overall, this is a great opportunity to discover these three album, which escaped many of Ponty’s fans, who loved his earlier Jazz and Fusion oriented albums, but stopped following his recordings by the time these albums were released. Most warmly recommended!

GARY BURTON ~ NEW VIBE MAN IN TOWN / WHO IS GARY BURTON? / IN CONCERT
BGO 1519 (Barcode: 5017261215192) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1961 - 1968 Released: 2024

This is a reissue / remaster of three early albums by American vibraphonist / composer / bandleader Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist, released originally on the RCAFind albums on this label label. Burton started his musical career at a very early age and was considered a prodigy. Choosing the vibraphone as his “weapon of choice”, and his decision to play Jazz rather than classical music made him a sensation and he recorded the first of the albums included here at the age of eighteen, quite an unprecedented event at the time. CD1 presets his first two albums, eight and seven tracks, recorded in 1961 and 1962 respectively. CD2 presents the 10th album, with eight tracks recorded in 1968, which is the only live recording by Burton and the one before last album released on RCA.

New Vibe Man In TownFind albums with this title” was recorded in a trio setting with bassist Gene ChericoFind albums by this artist and drummer Joe MorelloFind albums by this artist. All the tracks are standards. “Who is Gary Burton?Find albums with this title” was recorded in a septet setting with trumpeter Clark TerryFind albums by this artist, trombonist Bob BrookmeyerFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Phil WoodsFind albums by this artist, pianist Tommy FlanaganFind albums by this artist, bassist John NevesFind albums by this artist and drummers Morello or Chris SwansenFind albums by this artist. Four of the tracks are standards, two are by Swansen, who was Burton’s classmate at Berklee Collage of Music and finally one is by British trombonist / composer Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, who was his Berklee teacher and later a lifelong friend and musical collaborator.

In ConcertFind albums with this title” was recorded with the revolutionary quartet, which included guitarist Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, bassist Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist and drummer Bob MosesFind albums by this artist, and sounded like something from another planet, being one of the earliest Jazz-Rock Fusion ensembles, which changed the face of music. Except for one cover of a song by Bob DylanFind albums by this artist, all the tracks are originals, three composed by Burton, two by Coryell, one co-composed by the two and finally again one track by Gibbs.

Overall, this is a brilliant reminder of the early musical path by one of the most important American Jazz figures, which is perhaps also the most “non-American” Jazz figures, closer to the European sound and aesthetics than to his roots, which are still plainly present on his first two albums. This reissue joins the other three reissue projects of Gary Burton recordings on RCA, released by the great British BGOFind albums on this label label, which now cover ten of the eleven RCA recordings.

In fact it is rather surprising, in retrospect, that the group did not become a popular act, as they have all the potential to do so, continuing the "power trio" tradition of CreamFind albums by this artist and many other vastly more successful groups. Of the three group´s members, Newman (who was already a veteran and previously member of the Sounds IncorporatedFind albums by this artist and Jeff BeckFind albums by this artist´s group, continued to reappear on the many recordings made throughout the 1970s. The band and both these albums are as good as anything produced by all the other UK Prog bands, but unfortunately they simply missed the train with Punk exploding just at the time when they were starting their career, with British Prog being decimated in the process. The band folded shortly after recording the second and last album, and their recorded legacy remained mostly forgotten, to be re-discovered a couple decades later by the new generation of Prog fans. In retrospect these two albums are superb examples of the first classic wave of British Prog and remain a most satisfying listening experience, surely deserving wider recognition. Sometimes I wonder if the fact that bands like Yes, who decided to schlep on against all odds, was a wise move musically. Here is an example of a band which knew when to quit, leaving behind them a spotless legacy. Wholeheartedly recommended!

STEPPENWOLF ~ AT YOUR BIRTHDAY PARTY / 7
BGO 336 (Barcode: 5017261203366) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1969 - 1970 Released: 1996

3rd and 7th albums by US Rockers extraordinaire SteppenwolfFind albums by this artist, led by charismatic lead singer John KayFind albums by this artist, who also penned most of their material, presented here as a twofer. "At Your Birthday PartyFind albums with this title" was released following the two monster predecessors, which shaped the US Rock in many respects, and were truly impossible to follow. No wander the album was received coldly by critics, who considered it a much weaker release at the time, but in retrospect it is quite an excellent album in every respect. Rather that follow the pattern established by the two earlier albums, the band intentionally took a step back from the bluesy influences and expanded their repertoire to include Rock ballads, which worked out quite well. Considering the fact that the band was producing two albums yearly in the first phase of their existence, the entire output is truly amazing and definitely underappreciated. "7Find albums with this title" was the one before the last album recorded by the original incarnation of the band and is one of their strongest efforts, with excellent songwriting and perfect execution. It was their swan song in many respects, as the band would fall apart soon after, with just one more release up their sleeves. Although the band reformed later and in fact exists to this very day, the first glorious years and the first 8 albums are absolute Rock classics, sadly mostly forgotten and underappreciated. So here is a chance to re-examine their output and take another view at this great band, don´t miss it!

BGO 382 (Barcode: 5017261203823) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

1st and 2nd albums by UK Prog outfit Babe RuthFind albums by this artist, named after the American baseball star of the same name, founded by guitarist Alan ShacklockFind albums by this artist and including singer Janita HaanFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Dave PunshonFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave HewittFind albums by this artist and drummer Dick PowellFind albums by this artist (Powell and Punshon were replaced on the second album by Ed SpevockFind albums by this artist and Chris HolmesFind albums by this artist respectively). Although relatively obscure, the band was amongst the best and most interesting UK outfits at the time. The first album had quite strong Jazzy influence (especially on the great version of Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist´s "King Kong"). All band members were excellent instrumentalist and the albums are full of great solos, especially by the guitarist. Haan was also quite unusual as vocalist, with a good dynamic range from whisper to scream. The material (written almost entirely by Shacklock) is excellent and withstands the test of time beautifully. Some tracks on both albums include elaborate orchestral arrangements, expanding the sound and musical scope of the compositions. In retrospect these two albums are hidden gems of the period and surely deserve the attention of every Prog fan. Wholeheartedly recommended!

STEPPENWOLF ~ LIVE

Recorded: 1970 Released: 1998

6th album by US Rockers extraordinaire SteppenwolfFind albums by this artist and the only official live recording (originally a double LP) by the classic lineup of the group, which was recorded at various locations in early 1970, when the group was touring supporting their latest studio album "MonsterFind albums with this title". They perform several tracks from the latest album, as well as a selection of their classic material from earlier albums. The group was in top form at the time and their performances are strong and convincing, with John KayFind albums by this artist firmly in the lead. Apart from the musical content, which is excellent, it is also a great opportunity to hear Kay´s commentary when introducing the tunes, which reflects upon the social / political upheaval in the US at the time, with Rock musicians often in the forefront of the struggle. Rock obviously had a serious role as a means of expression and active platform at the time, when most rockers were intelligent enough to have something to say in addition to playing music, times sadly long gone by now. This album can be used as a time machine; just crank up the volume, relax, close your eyes and here you go 40 years back in time, when Rock was Rock and music was music. Enjoy!

STEPPENWOLF ~ STEPPENWOLF / THE SECOND
BGO 450 (Barcode: 5017261204509) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1968 Released: 1999

1st and 2nd albums by the classic US (of Canadian origin) band SteppenwolfFind albums by this artist, which epitomize not only the birth of American Rock, but also the atmosphere and state of mind of the young generation during the turbulent times of the Social upheaval in the late 1960s. Steppenwolf´s origins go back about a couple of years before the music included here was recorded, when Canadian singer John KayFind albums by this artist (a German immigrant) formed the band SparrowFind albums by this artist. After Sparrow disbanded Kay formed a new band, which he named Steppenwolf – a title of an influential novel by the German / Swiss author Hermann HesseFind albums by this artist (one of the most widely read authors in the late 1960s, whose mystical and philosophical ideology and love of the orient and the occult appealed to the hippie generation – yours truly included). Their debut album, which included the monster hit "Born To Be Wild", became an instant classic and was soon after immortalized, when Dennis HopperFind albums by this artist included the song in the soundtrack of his cult classic movie "Easy Rider" (one of the first US independent cinema productions created outside of the Hollywood dominated movie industry), which became a visual anthem of the era, and in turn made the song the era´s musical anthem. This mega success worked (in retrospect) against the band´s interest, as they remain conceptually linked to the phenomenal success of that one song and as a result both listeners and critics kept neglecting and diminishing their overall output, which was always excellent and surely deserved more recognition of their talent (see the pitiful entry on the band in All Music Guide). Kay was a formidable singer / songwriter and his charisma and vocal ability was as powerful and striking as the charisma of many other singers, who became legends of their time (i.e. Jim MorrisonFind albums by this artist). The band´s other members were all great instrumentalist and the guitar / organ layers of sound, which characterized their music, are classic examples of early Hard Rock at its best. Moving between Blues, Blues-Rock, Rock and Hard-Rock, those two albums truly define the musical era they represent and influenced hordes of other Rock bands to follow suit. The tunes, usually based on unforgettable riffs, are all delivered passionately and confidently, sounding as fresh today as they were when heard for the first time, and perhaps even better, as this music ages well, as does good wine. If the term "Classic Rock" has any meaning at all, it applies to this music better that to most of the stuff that is often associated with it. I can´t imagine any decent record collection, which does not include these two albums.

MIKE WESTBROOK ~ METROPOLIS
BGO 454 (Barcode: 5017261204547) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1971 Released: 1999

If the 1960s served as a period of establishment of the British Jazz scene, with scores of extremely talented instrumentalists and composers coming to prominence, surely the 1970s marked the “emancipation of British Jazz from American slavery”, a phrase brilliantly defined by British trumpeter / composer / musicologist / writer Ian CarrFind albums by this artist. One of the distinct heroes and champions of this new path was undoubtedly pianist / composer Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, whose compositions for large Jazz ensembles were the British answer and equivalent to the body of work composed by the great Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist. MetropolisFind albums with this title marks a high point in a series of brilliant works composed by Westbrook and recorded by large ensembles comprising of the creme de la creme of British Jazz musicians. Westbrook sublimely expands the Ellingtonian framework with the inclusion of multi-layered sound ambience, group improvisation and Rock rhythms, creating a completely innovative and spectacular musical phenomenon, somewhat comparable to contemporary Classical music, but firmly based in Jazz idioms and traditions. “Metropolis” was recorded by an ensemble, which included 23 musicians, each and every one of which are absolute Masters of their trade, including Westbrook on piano, Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, Ray WarleighFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, George KhanFind albums by this artist and John WarrenFind albums by this artist on saxophones, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist and Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist on trumpets, Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist and Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist on trombone, John TaylorFind albums by this artist on electric piano, Gary BoyleFind albums by this artist on guitar, Harry MillerFind albums by this artist and Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist on bass, Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist and John MarshallFind albums by this artist and drums and the divine Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist on vocals – more or less the entire core of modern British Jazz. The music is of course magnificent, full of pathos and expression with not a single dull moment from start to finish, and the performances absolutely chilling with one solo chasing another. There are few Jazz albums that come close to this masterpiece and although it is relatively little known by Jazz fans worldwide (as most great music) it is an absolute classic and a must for any serious listener, equivalent to hundreds of other less meaningful albums. Absolutely essential!

Both albums are a fantastic mixture of Hard Rock, Prog and Psychedelics, with Adrian Gurvitz displaying some amazing guitar abilities. The basic trio format is expanded by usage of rich orchestral arrangements, which in my opinion are not only excellent, but also represent one of the very early and very successful attempts to create Orchestral Rock. The music is also excellent and original and in retrospect quite daring and ahead of its time. These two albums have been among my favorites for almost 40 years, which surely proves that they didn´t go stale with age. MAMAS & PAPAS ~ DELIVER / PAPAS & MAMAS
BGO 462 (Barcode: 5017261204622) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1967 - 1968 Released: 1999

3rd and 4th album by US vocal super-group Mamas & PapasFind albums by this artist, a group which provided a major contribution to the soundtrack of the "Summer Of Love" and Hippy movement that swept the US in the late 1960s. Led by singer / guitarist John PhillipsFind albums by this artist, who also wrote most of the group´s evergreens, the group was deeply rooted in the US vocal Folk tradition with all of its members having previous experience singing with several folkie groups earlier on. However, they made the right switch at the right time, combining the folk-based harmonies with contemporary Pop songwriting and clever arrangements, creating on the way some of the most memorable musical gems in modern popular music. It seems that everything John Phillips touched turned into gold – the music, the group´s success and even the organization of the first ever Pop / Rock music festival at Monterey. Unfortunately the group was also full with internal conflicts, ambitions and personal feuds, leading them to self-destruction after just over two years of existence and just four brilliant albums. Later attempts to reunite and recreate the band led to nothing but vastly inferior results in comparison to the original period and can be safely ignored. In retrospect, these two albums, as well as the first two ones, are still a superb example of perfect Pop music, which has enough quality and talent to last for generations, way beyond nostalgic inertia. Definitely worth hearing time and time again, especially if you feel somewhat blue – this is essential joie de vivre.

Brown continued his musical adventured by forming the band Battered Ornaments with George KhanFind albums by this artist on saxophone, Chris SpeddingFind albums by this artist on guitar, Charlie HartFind albums by this artist on organ and a great Jazzy rhythm section. The band recorded just one, absolutely brilliant album (the first of the two presented here), with Brown singing the lead vocals, something he tried to avoid but did anyway, and Heckstall-Smith playing on two tracks. The music is absolutely stunning, a great example of the early UK Jazz-Rock, which is completely different of course from the later Jazz-Rock Fusion that most US bands pursued. 2nd album by British band StreetwalkersFind albums by this artist, founded by two ex-FamilyFind albums by this artist founding members vocalist Roger ChapmanFind albums by this artist and guitarist John WhitneyFind albums by this artist, after Family disbanded. Strictly speaking, it was the first album released under the Streetwalkers moniker, since the previous album was released as Chapman-WhitneyFind albums by this artist and was only entitled "StreetwalkersFind albums with this title", but in time that album was commonly accepted as the first Streetwalkers album and is referred to as such. Although Chapman and Whitney consciously wished to separate themselves from the Prog image associated with Family when they founded the new band, trying to create a more "straight-forward" Rock band, many of the elements which made Family one of the best and most unique bands were inherited. Chapman´s absolutely distinctive voice and vocal delivery was by itself a sufficient factor to distinguish the band from any other and with Whitney´s subtle guitar work and exceptional talent to write tunes that were both rhythmically and melodically quite apart from most Rock songs made Streetwalkers a great band. They drafted another singer / guitarist Bob TenchFind albums by this artist (ex-Jeff BeckFind albums by this artist group), who was responsible for the Rocky side of things and an excellent rhythm section, which kept the band kicking. Guest keyboardist also participated in the recording to expand the group´s sound. Both album feature van Leer`s amazing flute talents, but as opposed to his work with Focus, they are both arranged for large orchestra and include, in addition to his own compositions, many classical works, mainly by Bach. The performances are brilliant of course and the serene and relaxed atmosphere is typical of European approach to music. A classic (pun intended)!

Recorded: 1977 Released: 2003

10th album by NucleusFind albums by this artist and the first live album the band recorded. Just four extended tracks, which showcase all the players and clearly proove how brilliant the group was, live as well as in the studio. Although there is no guitar player present, this is still a great example of what proper Fusion sounds, when performed by the best musicians of the genre.

STREETWALKERS ~ LIVE
BGO 606 (Barcode: 5017261206060) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1977 Released: 2004

5th and last album by British band StreetwalkersFind albums by this artist, founded by two ex-FamilyFind albums by this artist founding members vocalist Roger ChapmanFind albums by this artist and guitarist John WhitneyFind albums by this artist, after Family disbanded. Recorded during the very last months the band existed and released "posthumously", this album (originally a double LP) splendidly sums up the band´s three years of activity, presenting them at what they did best: kick ass. On stage Streetwalkers were a mean Rock machine, delivering their music with vengeance and perfect professionalism. Chapman´s unequalled vocal delivery is of course the focal point, but the instrumentalists provide a superb background for his genius. The music, mostly written by Chapman / Whitney, is sophisticated enough to be interesting at all times, but also rocky enough to deliver a care-free straight-ahead exterior appeal, which Rock music projects. This is a splendid farewell present to the band´s loyal fans and followers, which unfortunately were not strong enough in numbers to ensure the band´s success, especially in view of the fact that the musical trend at the time was rapidly shifting towards the anti-musical revolution of Punk. In retrospect this is a great showcase of the last glorious days of British Rock. The album is an absolute must to all Family fans, but should appeal to most dedicated British Rock lovers, especially after being unavailable for so long.

JOHNNY WINTER ~ AND / AND LIVE
BGO 610 (Barcode: 5017261206107) ~ USA ~ Blues-Rock

Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2004

3rd album, which was recorded by a new band AndFind albums by this artist Johnny WinterFind albums by this artist formed with ex-McCoysFind albums by this artist members, including the guitarist / singer / songwriter Rick DerringerFind albums by this artist, who was to be Winter’s associate for many years. The new quartet had a rockier sound, based on guitar and vocal duets. Still strongly rooted in the blues legacy, this is one of the strongest examples of early Southern Rock (see Allman Brothers BandFind albums by this artist). Derringer contributes some notable songs, which are rockier than the traditional Winter material and the bland of tunes works perfectly. Winter’s guitar pyrotechnics are of course the highlight time after time, but the entire album is just a superb trip down the memory lane, when everything just sounded right. Edgar WinterFind albums by this artist, Johnny’s brother and future band member helped with the excellent production. Just listen to the track “Nothing Left”, where Winter plays in similar fashion to Jimmy HendrixFind albums by this artist, in order to appreciate his guitar playing skills. As excellent as this album is, it was to be overshadowed by the bands live performances of some of these songs captured on the next album.
4th album and a natural follow up to its predecessor, the studio album with Winter’s group And. Recorded during two concerts (Fillmore East in NY and Pirate’s World in Florida) this is one of rock’s greatest live albums with levels of energy and superb performances rarely captured on record. Winter and Derringer exchange guitar licks and vocals and the rhythm section drives the show like there’s no tomorrow. Just listen to their version of "Jumpin’ Jack Flash", which makes the Rolling StonesFind albums by this artist sound like kindergarten kids, to understand the level of musicianship involved. Some other Rock And Roll classics get a similar treatment and of course a fair share of great blues numbers are included. This electrifying concert is a classic example of what rock sounded like at its peak and sounds every bit as good today as it did then. I hope the entire concerts get a release sometime in the future, but in the meantime this is not to be missed. Essentail stuff!

DON RENDELL / IAN CARR ~ CHANGE IS
BGO 613 (Barcode: 5017261206138) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2004

5th and last album by the seminal Don RendellFind albums by this artist / Ian CarrFind albums by this artist Quintet, probably the most important British Jazz ensemble in the 1960s, which played a key role in establishing the “British sound” in Jazz, breaking away from the constrains of American Jazz traditionalism. The quintet comprised of brilliant instrumentalists and composers and after playing together for about five years they achieved a telepathic understanding of each other’s mannerisms and preferences, allowing them to perform in unparalleled unison and harmony. Don Rendell on saxophones and flute, Ian Carr on trumpet and flugelhorn, Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist on piano, Dave GreenFind albums by this artist on bass and Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist on drums were together a mean and lean, unstoppable music machine, creating some of the most daring and adventurous Jazz music ever heard.

However, as hinted by the album’s title, by the time this album was recorded the quintet reached the end of its life cycle. Both Garrick and Carr were extremely busy musically, composing and performing music outside the quintet’s frame, with Garrick leading his own ensemble and recording prolifically and Carr founding his own ensemble, the legendary NucleusFind albums by this artist, which was to become the definitive Jazz-Rock Fusion point of reference. Two of the compositions found on this album would soon be recorded as title tracks on albums by Garrick (Cold MountainFind albums with this title) and Nucleus (Elastic DreamFind albums with this title), clear evidence of the fact that the quintet was reaching the end of its days. Another indication of the imminent changes was the fact that the album includes, for the first time, guest musicians who augmented the quintet on several tracks. They were: Mick PyneFind albums by this artist on piano, Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist on bass, Guy WarrenFind albums by this artist on percussion and Stan RobinsonFind albums by this artist on saxophone, musicians who would soon play with the new ensembles formed after the quintet folded.

It is somewhat unfortunate that the following decade would be extremely flourishing for both Carr and Garrick, but Rendell was to slowly step back from the limelight and record only sporadically. But all that aside, the final recording by the Rendell / Carr quintet is a masterpiece of British Jazz in every respect, full of superb compositions and brilliant performances – an album that deserves a honorable position in every serious music collection. Essential!

BGO 623 (Barcode: 5017261206237) ~ CANADA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1978 - 1980 Released: 2004

3rd and 4th albums by Canadian trio KlaatuFind albums by this artist, which came to fame following one of the most brilliant promotional campaigns in music business, spreading insinuations and "hidden clues" that they were no others than the BeatlesFind albums by this artist, recording under an alias. Of course the rumors were proven to be completely false, but they did get their share of public interest and fame at the time. The band did have a very Beatles-like sound and musical approach, and recorded five quite impressive albums, to disappear into oblivion soon after. Their music was very melodic, spiced with Psychedelic and Prog elements and great vocal harmonies - altogether quite classy and occasionally even brilliant. In retrospect the music still sounds fresh and bearing the wonderful sound signature of the 1970s is definitely a pleasant trip down the memory lane. Definitely much better that what most critics would have you believe.

AMAZING BLONDEL ~ EVENSONG / FANTASIA LINDUM
BGO 626 (Barcode: 5017261206268) ~ UK ~ Folk-Rock

Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2004

2nd and 3rd albums by British band Amazing BlondelFind albums by this artist, which were quite an unusual "bird" among the flourishing UK Folk-Rock flock in the late 1960s / early 1970s. The duo managed to record the debut album "The Amazing Blondel And A Few FacesFind albums with this title" for the obscure BellFind albums on this label label and after expanding to a trio they joined the roster of IslandFind albums on this label Records, recording a series of albums for that label, of which the two albums included here were the first. The music, almost entirely written by Gladwin, who also sings the lead vocals, is completely acoustic and played on instruments, which were used centuries ago and based entirely on the English Early Music format. The lyrics are also kept in the general spirit of the era, spiced with humorous tongue in cheek tidbits. "Fantasia LindumFind albums with this title" includes a suite of the same name (which originally took up the entire side of the LP), which is often considered as one of British Prog-Folk most revered pieces. Grab it!

KEITH TIPPETT ~ BLUEPRINT
BGO 634 (Barcode: 5017261206343) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2004

Pianist / composer Keith TippettFind albums by this artist is one of the pioneers of British Free Jazz and Improvised Music. His work in the late 1960s / 1970s both as a leader and sideman with the leading Avant-Garde ensembles at the time, includes some the most daring and revolutionary British Jazz achievements. This album was recorded shortly after the gigantic CentipedeFind albums by this artist project, led by Tippett and comprised of over 50 Britain’s leading Avant-Garde Jazz and Rock musicians recorded their seminal (and only) album Septober EnergyFind albums with this title. In complete contrast, this album is all about intimacy, recorded by five musicians in various formats from duos to quartets. The music is completely improvised, capturing moments of musical exchanges between the musicians with no preconceived clearly defined themes. Tippett’s companions include his wife Julie TippettsFind albums by this artist (vocals), who not only changed her name (from Julie DriscollFind albums by this artist) but also made an almost complete about face from her previous Pop and Jazz-Rock background, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist and two percussionists Frank PerryFind albums by this artist and Keith BaileyFind albums by this artist. The album was produced by no other than Robert FrippFind albums by this artist, with whom Tippett cooperated on a few King CrimsonFind albums by this artist recordings. The album remains a classic example of early British and European Improvised Music and lost none of its expressionist power over the years. Definitely worth investigating.

GNIDROLOG ~ IN SPITE OF HARRY`S TOE-NAIL / LADY LAKE
BGO 637 (Barcode: 5017261206374) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2004

1st and 2nd albums by brilliant British Prog outfit GnidrologFind albums by this artist, one of the best representatives of the genre, who for some incomprehensible reason failed to make any impact at the time and were largely discovered decades later by new generation of Prog fans. Led by twin brothers Colin GoldringFind albums by this artist (lead vocals) and Stewart GoldringFind albums by this artist (lead guitars), the group also included Peter CowlingFind albums by this artist on bass and Nigel PegrumFind albums by this artist on drums. Saxophonist John EarleFind albums by this artist joined the group in time for the second album. All the group members played additional instruments and as an ensemble were able to produce a most impressive instrumental variety. Their true strength however was the incredibly complex music they composed, which was more advanced than that of most of their contemporaries. Frequent tempo changes, quirk passages, uneven beats, in short everything that makes music interesting, were all part of their musical trademark. Although the band obviously had their unique voice and did not copy or was not especially influenced by any of their peers, Prog aficionados will find in their music traces of King CrimsonFind albums by this artist, Jethro TullFind albums by this artist, Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist and basically any known British Prog act active at the time, although to be completely fair it is worth mentioning that Gnidrolog probably used (or invented) many of the tricks of the trade before any of the others did. Following the complete commercial failure of the two albums, the group disbanded and was never heard about again, until they re-surfaced with a re-union recording almost 30 years later. These two albums firmly belong to the early Prog Canon and are worthy of discovery by anybody who missed them until now. Absolutely classic stuff!

2nd and 3rd album by Irish Folk-Rock duo Tir Na NogFind albums by this artist, one of the finest representatives of the genre, although little known and often neglected by fans and critics alike. Sonny CondellFind albums by this artist and Leo O´KellyFind albums by this artist had between them everything needed to create great music – they were both good songwriters, each played several instruments and their vocal harmonies were second to none. Following the release of their eponymous debut album in 1971, which was basically recorded by the duo without help from any additional musicians, they changed the approach slightly for their next two albums, using great studio players to expand the sound and even added some string arrangements to create a full-fledged Prog / Folk sound and feel. Some of the players involved include legendary bassist Brian OdgersFind albums by this artist and Procol HarumFind albums by this artist keyboardist Matthew FisherFind albums by this artist. Lancaster is the main soloist on this recording, with Abrahams keeping a relatively low profile, but he did write most of the music here, with the rest written by keyboardist Bob SargeantFind albums by this artist. MICHAEL GIBBS ~ JUST AHEAD
BGO 679 (Barcode: 5017261206794) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Composer / arranger / bandleader Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist was one of the most prominent figures on the burgeoning British Jazz scene at its peak. He performed (as trombonist), composed and arranged music for many ensembles active at the time, in parallel to leading his own band, which is captured here during a residency at the legendary Ronnie ScottFind albums by this artist’s club in London. The band included the top British Jazz players of the time, most of which played on Michel’s previous two studio recordings: Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist, Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Chris PyneFind albums by this artist, Malcolm GriffithsFind albums by this artist, Geoff PerkinsFind albums by this artist (trombone), Ray WarleighFind albums by this artist, Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist (saxophone), Dave MacRaeFind albums by this artist, John TaylorFind albums by this artist (piano), Chris SpeddingFind albums by this artist (guitar), Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist (bass), John MarshallFind albums by this artist (drums) and Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist (vibes & percussion). The music covers a wide range of styles, from the typical atmospheric and moody compositions by Gibbs, to scorching Jazz-Rock Fusion exemplified mostly by Spedding’s lead guitar parts and even Blues. Gibbs pays a tribute to some of his American pioneering colleagues: Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist, Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist, Carla BleyFind albums by this artist and Keith JarrettFind albums by this artist, whom he befriended during his studies in the US, by including his arrangements of their tunes. Notably Gibbs kept looking across the Atlantic for inspiration, being somewhat different in that respect from most of his British contemporaries, who wanted to emancipate themselves from American influence as much as possible. Nevertheless his unique approach to composition and arrangement was clearly much more advanced than most stuff coming over from America. The raw energy and the virtuosity of the players make this album one of the greatest documents of the era, which remains a timeless masterpiece. A must for British Jazz lovers!

STEPPENWOLF ~ EARLY STEPPENWOLF / FOR LADIES ONLY
BGO 691 (Barcode: 5017261206916) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1967 - 1971 Released: 2005

4th and 8th albums by US group SteppenwolfFind albums by this artist, which are in fact the earliest and the latest recordings by this band during their initial period of activity. It is quite astonishing to see how the group developed and changed in the short period of four years, with this change reflecting well the overall music scene dramatic developments during that period. Surprisingly (or perhaps not) "Early SteppenwolfFind albums with this title" was not really recorded by Steppenwolf, but by the group SparrowFind albums by this artist, which is the first outfit formed by vocalist John KayFind albums by this artist in Canada, and which eventually settled down on the West Coast and changed the name to Steppenwolf (with some minor lineup changes). Recorded live at the legendary SF "Matrix" club (owned by Jefferson AirplaneFind albums by this artist´s Marty BalinFind albums by this artist), the album is a phenomenal document of the West Coast music scene in 1967, when Rock music, heavily spiced by Psychedelic influences, was breaking all the barriers and moving forward at an incredible pace. The album includes an 21+ minutes version of "The Pusher", which is in fact a freely improvised modern music, having really very little to do with Rock per se, and being closer to Free Improvised Music or Contemporary Classical Music, with extended instrumental improvisations, sound effects, dramatic crescendos, etc. The atmosphere is not far removed form what other West Coast bands were doing at the time, with similar live recordings by the DoorsFind albums by this artist, Jefferson Airplane and Grateful DeadFind albums by this artist serving as proof. "For Ladies OnlyFind albums with this title", in complete contrast to its companion, presents a completely different musical approach, although separated by mere four years. The group was now past its commercial peak, reached with the release of their first two albums, and with a solid Blues-Rock / Hard Rock image and strong songwriting serving as their forte. For their swan song they mellowed up quite a bit, dedicating the album to the ladies in their lives and expressing a strong feminist view, quite contrary to usual chauvinistic approach of most Rock musicians. The songwriting and playing is still very strong, but it´s quite clear that the band was running out of wind and it was time to quit. Kay and various version of Steppenwolf were to appear again in the future and record more albums, but nothing ever would come close to the first eight glorious albums. A classic!

GEORGIE FAME ~ SEVENTH SON / GOING HOME
BGO 700 (Barcode: 5017261207005) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 - 1971 Released: 2008

Contrary to what most people know about singer / songwriter / keyboards player Georgie FameFind albums by this artist, his true aspiration was always to sing Jazz. Although he arrived on the British scene in the mid-1960s as a Pop singer, with several singles charting over the years, pretty soon he decided that a Pop idol was the last thing he wanted to be and moved away from the Pop image as fast as he could. By the end of the 1960s Fame was already singing in front of Jazz bands and his self-penned material had a distinctive Jazzy feel.

This album includes two of Fame’s LPs recorded in 1969 and 1971 respectively, both great examples of his great sensitivity and musicality. On Seventh SonFind albums with this title he is supported by a dreamy Jazz band, which includes such illustrious players as Art ThemenFind albums by this artist, Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist (saxophone), Derek WatkinsFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Chris PyneFind albums by this artist (trombone), Brian OdgersFind albums by this artist (bass) and John MarshallFind albums by this artist (drums), who play some outstanding solos. The album was produce by Fame’s friend Alan PriceFind albums by this artist, another Pop star with Jazz inspirations.

On Going HomeFind albums with this title the supporting band is the Keith MansfieldFind albums by this artist orchestra, another quite jazzy outfit, which played for example behind Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist, when he lived and recorded in Britain at the same period. Although perhaps only marginally Jazz, these two albums are a great example of the openness the music industry was willing to extend towards the artists, who wanted to do “their own thing”, something that lasted for a very brief period of time.

Fame’s worm tone and great feel for the music are definitely worth a recollection and this album is a great trip down the memory lane. Probably for people in the autumn years, like myself, but still great fun.

GEORGIE FAME ~ THE TWO FACES OF FAME / THE THIRD FACE OF FAME
BGO 708 (Barcode: 5017261207081) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 - 1968 Released: 2006

Contrary to popular opinion, British singer / songwriter / keyboardist Georgie FameFind albums by this artist was born to be a Jazz singer. Although his early career developed during the fabulous late 1960s and was mostly visible on the Pop scene, with several hit singles, his albums were another story entirely. Backed up by the cream of the crop of British Jazz musicians, Fame delivered his superbly sensitive vocals with elegance, always spiced with a dash of the typical British humor. Looking at the list of musicians playing on these two albums one can find such names as John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist (guitar), Tony OxleyFind albums by this artist (drums), Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist (piano), Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist (bass), Peter KingFind albums by this artist (sax), Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Lynn DobsonFind albums by this artist (sax) and many more – a list that reads like a who´s who of the burgeoning late 1960s UK Jazz scene. Fame tackles quite a few vocal standards on these album, many of the great American songbook classics as well as some newer songs by British composers. Overall these two albums are a great example of how great music lasts forever and the 40 years that passed since they were recorded seem to make it even better, given the shape of contemporary music mayhem. Absolutely delightful!

MIKE WESTBROOK ~ CITADEL / ROOM 315
BGO 713 (Barcode: 5017261207135) ~ UK ~ Big Band Jazz

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2006

This magnificent album marks a pivotal point in the career of pianist / composer Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist, a transition between the first and the second phases of his monumental life’s achievement. Since it is a suite composed for and performed by a large ensemble (19 musicians in this case), it continues the pioneering work by Westbrook as a composer of large scale orchestral music and closes the cycle which started with the debut "CelebrationFind albums with this title" and continued with "ReleaseFind albums with this title", "Marching SongsFind albums with this title", "Love SongsFind albums with this title" and "MetropolisFind albums with this title".

In between “Metropolis” and "Citadel / Room 315Find albums with this title" Westbrook ventured into Jazz-Rock Fusion with the group Solid Gold CadillacFind albums by this artist, returning to Jazz with the new suite, which was commissioned by the Swedish Radio Jazz Group with John SurmanFind albums by this artist as a guest soloist. It was first performed and recorded in 1974, but for various reasons the recording was not released, so Westbrook decided to record it with a British lineup, following several performances in UK a year later.

As usual in his case, he managed to assemble the best Jazz players on the British Jazz scene to participate in the recording, including John Surman as the main soloist on baritone and soprano saxophone, with Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist and Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist on trumpet, Dave MacRaeFind albums by this artist on piano, Brian GoddingFind albums by this artist on guitar, Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist on bass and Allan JacksonFind albums by this artist on drums and many others.

The music is of course brilliant, as always, but surprisingly more melodic and accessible than most of his earlier works, with clear “winks” towards the work of Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist. Superbly arranged and performed, this is an epic achievement, sadly one of the last great Jazz works of such scale, as the climate in Britain was about to change very soon and the magnificent Golden Decade was facing an inevitable comedown. Westbrook was of course to continue his extraordinary work as a composer, but his albums will be gradually released on small independent labels and sell meagerly. Well, we still have this essential recording to re-visit any time we feel a need to refill out batteries with some highly charged musical delight. Essential!

GARY BURTON ~ LOFTY FAKE ANAGRAM / A GENUINE TONG FUNERAL
BGO 723 (Barcode: 5017261207234) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2006

Vibraphonist / composer Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist is one of greatest American Jazz musicians, with a long and outstanding career and a massive body of work. He is also one of relatively few American Jazz artists, who can be considered as true originals, embracing the Jazz tradition but at the same time constantly expanding the horizons of the music and exploring the terra incognita of the genre. This album takes us back to the early days of Burton’s musical path, when he was leading probably the most forward-thinking Jazz quartet of the day. Together with guitarist extraordinaire Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, bassist Steve SwallowFind albums by this artist and drummer Bob MosesFind albums by this artist, the quartet ventured into some of the earliest examples of Jazz-Rock Fusion, years ahead of their contemporaries. The two original LPs, although both recorded in 1967, are quite different from each other. On Lofty Fake AnagramFind albums with this title the quartet explores mostly a series of original tunes by Burton and Swallow, with finesse and elegance, but also with fire and passion. On A Genuine Tong FuneralFind albums with this title Burton combines forces with another great and unorthodox American Jazz representative, pianist / composer Carla BleyFind albums by this artist. The music is her first full-scale Jazz composition for a band, which she calls a “Dark Opera Without Words”. The “without word” part was to bee soon remedied on her next spectacular project, the first true modern Jazz opera Escalator Over The HillFind albums with this title, which included a libretto by Paul HainesFind albums by this artist. For the recording of this music the quartet was expanded to a small orchestra with Carla Bley on piano, Steve LacyFind albums by this artist and the brilliant Argentinean player Gato BarbieriFind albums by this artist on saxophone, Michael MantlerFind albums by this artist (Carla’s close partner) on trumpet, Jimmy KnepperFind albums by this artist on trombone and Howard JohnsonFind albums by this artist on tuba. The music is of course completely unique and unprecedented, with Bley’s masterly usage of orchestration to create moods and sonic vistas, all of it years ahead of its time. Together these two recordings provide a glimpse at the period when American Jazz was still bubbling with creativity and excitement. Brilliant and essential stuff!

STEPHEN STILLS ~ STILLS / ILLEGAL STILLS / THOROUGHFARE GAP
BGO 748 (Barcode: 5017261207487) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1975 - 1978 Released: 2007

American singer / songwriter / guitarist and Rock icon Stephen StillsFind albums by this artist needs no introduction to any 1960s / 1970s music fan. His many landmark performances with the Buffalo SpringfieldFind albums by this artist, Crosby, Stills & NashFind albums by this artist and Crosby, Stills, Nash & YoungFind albums by this artist are all milestones of Rock music and are widely known. However, his solo output in the years following the early 1970s peak of popularity is much lesser known and often sadly forgotten.

This album collects together three of his solo albums (the third, fourth and fifth studio albums) recorded in the mid to late 1970s for the ColumbiaFind albums on this label label, all of which have been out of print for ages. The cast of characters taking part in the recording reads like the who´s who of the US music scene at the time and Stills´ songwriting is as strong as ever.

Although these albums had limited commercial success, they are great examples of his abilities and remarkable talents, which surely deserve to be remembered. I haven´t listened to this music in ages and hearing it now, over 30 years later, not only brings back many memories, but also reaffirms Stills´ status as one of the most memorable American music makers of the 20th Century. Definitely worth investigating!

GRAHAM COLLIER ~ DOWN ANOTHER ROAD / SONGS FOR MY FATHER / MOSAICS
BGO 767 (Barcode: 5017261207678) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 - 1970 Released: 2007

Composer / arranger / bandleader / bassist Graham CollierFind albums by this artist is one of the Godfathers of modern British Jazz, and his contribution to the genre as a musician, educator and writer are monumental. This album collects the three albums Collier recorded for the FontanaFind albums on this label / PhilipsFind albums on this label labels in 1969 / 1970, following his debut recording on DeramFind albums on this label from 1967. He composed all the music presented here (except one tune) and plays bass (something he was to abandon in the future) and the lineups of the three ensembles include some of the greatest players on the British scene at the time: Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, Alan WakemanFind albums by this artist, Bob SydorFind albums by this artist, Tony RobertsFind albums by this artist (saxophone), Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist (oboe), Nick EvansFind albums by this artist, Derek WadsworthFind albums by this artist (trombone), Philip LeeFind albums by this artist (guitar), John TaylorFind albums by this artist, Geoff CastleFind albums by this artist (piano) and John MarshallFind albums by this artist, John WebbFind albums by this artist (drums). Many of these players were to become future leaders of course, as Collier’s ensembles served as an excellent breeding ground for young players, similar to what happened on the Blues scene with John MayallFind albums by this artist’s ensembles.

BUDDY RICH BIG BAND ~ VERY ALIVE AT RONNIE SCOTT`S
BGO 785 (Barcode: 5017261207852) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2008

Drummer / bandleader Buddy RichFind albums by this artist was for many years an iconic figure on the US Jazz scene, first as drummer in big bands led by Artie ShawFind albums by this artist and Tommy DorseyFind albums by this artist and later as a leader of his own Big Band. His incredible technique, speed, power and inventiveness as well as his personal charisma and a dry sense of humor soon awarded him the title of “the world’s greatest drummer”, which was largely true as far as mainstream / swing Big Band Jazz was concerned. His bands featured over the years some of the best players on the scene and the music was meticulously arranged to achieve the maximal effect as far as Big Band sound is concerned. This wonderful album, recorded live at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s club in London, is probably one of the best recordings Rich ever made. The club’s intimate atmosphere and sympathetic crowd, as well as the acoustics of the venue, contribute greatly to the music, which is performed with flair and vengeance. For Big Band enthusiasts this is an absolute must, and it serves as a great document of the era as well as the Big Band phenomenon, which is almost gone today. Wholeheartedly recommended!

IRON BUTTERFLY ~ SCORCHING BEAUTY / SUN AND STEEL
BGO 821 (Barcode: 5017261208217) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1974 - 1975 Released: 2008

6th and 7th albums by US rockers Iron ButterflyFind albums by this artist, recorded by the second incarnation of the band fronted by guitarist Erik BraunnFind albums by this artist, who also wrote most of the tunes on these two albums. The original lineup of the group, which was a major force on the US Psychedelic Rock scene with their legendary "In-A-Gadda-Da-VidaFind albums with this title" album, fell apart by the end of 1970, releasing their swan song "MetamorphosisFind albums with this title". This second incarnation didn´t continue the musical line of their predecessors (after all almost five years went by and the music scene changed), deciding to produce more mainstream Rock material, which of course infuriated fans and critics alike, who dismissed these albums offhand. In retrospect these albums are surely not worse that most of the material recorded at the time and contain quite a few brilliant moments, especially "Sun And SteelFind albums with this title", which features keyboardist Bill DeMartinesFind albums by this artist, who is the most notable instrumentalist on these recordings. Original Iron Butterfly drummer Ron BushyFind albums by this artist is also part of the lineup. Altogether these two album are solid reflections of their times and lovers of 1970s Classic Rock should enjoy them.

ROGER CHAPMAN ~ CHAPPO / LIVE IN HAMBURG
BGO 824 (Barcode: 5017261208248) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1979 Released: 2008

1st and 2nd albums by UK singer Roger ChapmanFind albums by this artist, recorded following the demise of FamilyFind albums by this artist and later StreetwalkersFind albums by this artist, the two bands he led since the late 1960s and up to the late 1970s. Chapman´s decision to go solo was a logical move following his experiences with bands, which failed to gain large following, despite the fact that they played some of the best music recorded in the 1970s, both Prog and later Classic Rock. He was at the top of his vocal powers and idiosyncratic showmanship and unique throaty voice had no equals, neither at the time nor later. Chapman selected an excellent band to accompany him on his debut studio album, which included Henry SpinnettiFind albums by this artist on drums, Geoff WhitehornFind albums by this artist on guitar and the legendary Brian OdgersFind albums by this artist on bass. Ex-Family cohort Poly PalmerFind albums by this artist also participated on several tracks. Following the release of the studio album Chapman formed a touring band, christened ShortlistFind albums by this artist, which included some of the musicians who played on the studio album and added Ex-King CrimsonFind albums by this artist saxophonist Mel CollinsFind albums by this artist, which was recorded live in Germany a few month later and released as the second album. Both albums absolutely kick butt are superb examples of Classic Rock, even when recorded relatively late, when Rock was already dying. Chapman still enjoys quite a lot of popularity, especially in Europe, and continues to perform and record. For his fans these albums are an absolute must!

FLOCK ~ FLOCK ROCK – THE BEST OF THE FLOCK
BGO 838 (Barcode: 5017261208385) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1969 - 1970 Released: 2008

First a very important explanation why a "Best Of…" album would be considered at all to be placed on my site, as my loathing of the very idea of a "Best Of…" album is commonly known. Well the album´s title is somewhat confusing; the CD does include some of the material included on the first two original FlockFind albums by this artist albums: the eponymous debut and "Dinosaur SwampsFind albums with this title", but the "real" sensation is the inclusion of previously unreleased material recorded by the group for their third Columbia album, entitled "Flock RockFind albums with this title", which was abandoned after being rejected by the label. They are all here – superb instrumental pieces, which show the direction the group wanted to take and of course a most valuable addition to the group´s limited recorded output. Led by violinist Jerry GoodmanFind albums by this artist, Flock were definitely one of the most interesting Jazz-Rock Fusion ensembles at the time and alongside Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist and ChaseFind albums by this artist revolutionized music as we know it. People who already own the two albums will get this for the bonus material and those who don´t, have now a splendid opportunity to get exposed to some of the best Fusion ever recorded!

CHASE ~ CHASE / ENNEA / PURE MUSIC
BGO 842 (Barcode: 5017261208422) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1971 - 1973 Released: 2008

The US Jazz-Rock Fusion ensemble ChaseFind albums by this artist is perhaps the least known among its contemporaries like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist or even FlockFind albums by this artist, but I personally loved them very much and kept them in my memories all these years. It is therefore a joyful occasion to see their complete recording legacy being reissued and available again.

Led by brilliant trumpeter Bill ChaseFind albums by this artist, who came to fame as the lead trumpet in Woody HermanFind albums by this artist´s HerdFind albums by this artist, known to deliver some of the strongest high notes ever played on this instrument, and who also played with other orchestras led by such famous leaders like Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist and Stan KentonFind albums by this artist. By the late 1960s Bill Chase became somewhat bored by playing Big Band scores and decided to plunge full steam ahead into the invigorating world of Jazz-Rock Fusion. He collected a group of young but highly experienced young players, who shared his vision, creating the nine-piece band Chase.

Signed with EpicFind albums on this label, the band recorded 3 brilliant albums, included here, before Bill Chase and three other members of the band tragically perished in a plane crash, putting an end to one of the most promising bands of the time. Chase included a four-trumpet front line, backed by a rocky rhythm section (keyboards, guitar, bass & drums) and a lead singer (Terry RichardsFind albums by this artist, who has a voice quite similar to David Clayton-ThomasFind albums by this artist). This unique lineup brings together the better of the two worlds – Jazz and Rock – creating a superb mixture, which only very few contenders seemed to possess. Most of the material is composed by Bill Chase, with a few classic songs getting a fresh arrangement.

All three albums are equally brilliant, with the last one being the most mature and richly orchestrated, with expanded improvised solos and mostly instrumental. Bill Chase delivers several of his high-pitched solos, which leave the listener completely breathless. All in all listening to these albums in a row is an exhilarating experience, hitting right where it counts! This music aged extremely well and today, some 35 years after it was recorded, is still some of the best stuff you can let into your ears – absolutely essential!

FAMILY ~ A SONG FOR ME / ANYWAY...
BGO 854 (Barcode: 5017261208545) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2009

3rd and 4th albums by the fantastic British Prog band FamilyFind albums by this artist, one of the most imaginative, sophisticated and excellent bands of the 1970s. Formed by vocalist Roger ChapmanFind albums by this artist and guitarist John WhitneyFind albums by this artist, who also were responsible for writing the band´s exceptional material, the original lineup included also saxophonist Jim KingFind albums by this artist, bassist Rick GrechFind albums by this artist and drummer Rob TownsendFind albums by this artist. This lineup recorded two exceptional albums: "Music In A Doll`s HouseFind albums with this title" and "Family EntertainmentFind albums with this title", which are considered as Prog masterpieces. Following the departure of Grech (to form Blind FaithFind albums by this artist) and later King, they were replaced by bassist John WeiderFind albums by this artist and multi-instrumentalist Poli PalmerFind albums by this artist respectively. Palmer´s contributions on vibraphone, flute and piano expanded the band´s sound considerably, adding subtle Jazzy nuances to the already intricate musical amalgam the band produced. Chapman´s unique vocal qualities, which had absolutely no rivalry on the British scene, combined with the superb instrumental backing turned Family into an absolute marvel, which has stayed unchallenged for the last 40 years. The new lineup recorded the two albums included here in rapid succession, using 4 live tracks on the second album to speed up the recording process, which ultimately turned out to be the only live material ever formally released by the band. The quality of the songwriting, as well as the extended instrumental work, is staggering and completely uncompromised by the passage of time. This is the Holy Grail of early Prog, regardless the fact that most Prog historians and music critics often fail to recognize the band´s contribution to the genre. This remastered edition spiced up with many bonus tracks is a must to any collector of Prog albums, as no collection can be complete without them. Absolutely essential!

7th and 8th albums by the fantastic British Prog band FamilyFind albums by this artist, one of the most imaginative, sophisticated and excellent bands of the 1970s. "BandstandFind albums with this title" was recorded by the same excellent lineup that created its predecessor "FearlessFind albums with this title" and the live album. In spite of extensive touring and some chart success Family sadly remained somewhere in the back trenches of the turbulent Rock scene, never actually achieving the recognition they truly deserved. By the time the recorded the second album included here, which was to be their swansong, the band was clearly running out of steam as far as climbing the commercial top was concerned. Poli PalmerFind albums by this artist and John WettonFind albums by this artist left (Wetton joined King CrimsonFind albums by this artist) and were replaced by keyboardist Tony AshtonFind albums by this artist and bassist Jim CreganFind albums by this artist. The last album was much more relaxed that the previous material, but definitely still a great piece of musical ingenuity, even if the critics and many of the band´s fans thought otherwise.
