AL DI MEOLA ~ ORANGE AND BLUE
WOUNDED BIRD 9197 (Barcode: 664140919723) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1994 Released: 2005

Although concentration mostly on acoustic projects, Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist’s love for the electric guitar remains intact, as does his ability to use it. This incredible record brings Di Meola back to his familiar Fusion / Jazz environment and with the help of some of the best musicians on the scene at the time (Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist / Steve GaddFind albums by this artist – drums, Marc JohnsonFind albums by this artist – bass and many others including the Israeli singer NoaFind albums by this artist and Greek superstar George DalarasFind albums by this artist) he produces a highly spirited album. The music, composed almost entirely by Di Meola, is of the highest quality, mixing superbly Fusion, Jazz and World elements. The guitar parts are elegant and dazzling, as always and the entire crew follows the leader supplying sympathetic support, which compliments his playing with excellence. In short this is one of those albums that never let you down and repeated listening presents no danger of boredom whatsoever. Highly recommended!

AL DI MEOLA ~ THE INFINITE DESIRE
TELARC 83433 (Barcode: 089408343322) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1998 Released: 1998

This is Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist’s debut album for the excellent TelarcFind albums on this label label, a move which seemed quite unusual at the time as the label was mostly associated with releases by the old generation of straight-ahead mainstream jazz players. In retrospect Telarc turned out to work extremely well for Di Meola, as the label´s renowned sound quality suits perfectly his delicate music. On the album Di Meola continues and expands the format he’s been following since the late 1980s, which is a crossover between Fusion and World Music influences. As usual, he wrote all the music on the album, which reflects perfectly his constant development as a musician and composer. The innovation on this album is Al’s usage of guitar synthesizer, although he switches between his electric (or in this case electronic) and acoustic guitars quite often. Almost every track on this album features a different lineup, with numerous guest musicians appearing alongside Di Meola (like Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist - piano, Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist - drums, John PatitucciFind albums by this artist - bass and others), which of course makes the album more interesting instrumentally. Although Di Meola’s output is consistently excellent, this is definitely one of his best albums and a most warmly recommended addition to any serious record collection.

PETER ERSKINE ~ AS IT WAS
ECM 2490/93 (Barcode: 602547558329) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1992 - 1997 Released: 2016

This wonderful Box Set contains the four albums by the American drummer / composer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist recorded by his trio which included British pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist and Swedish bassist Palle DanielssonFind albums by this artist and released on the ECMFind albums on this label label, which are: "You Never KnowFind albums with this title" (ECM 1497) recorded 1992, "Time BeingFind albums with this title" (ECM 1532) recorded 1993, "As It IsFind albums with this title" (ECM 1594) recorded 1995 and "JuniFind albums with this title" (ECM 1657) recorded 1997. The music was mostly composed by the trio members. All these albums were recorded at the magnificent Rainbow Studio in Oslo by Jan Erik KongshaugFind albums by this artist.

Erskine, one of the most versatile and open-minded American drummers, who feels at ease in many diverse musical environments, has a long history of cooperating with European musicians, which strongly influenced his approach and brought him closer to the European aesthetics, which is strongly present on these recordings.

Piano trios led by the drummer are a relative rarity in Jazz history, but as these albums demonstrate they can be every bit as excellent as those led by pianists. These three Master musicians create superb music together, in the best tradition of the classic piano trio, strongly emphasizing European approach to melody and improvisation, full of elegance and lyricism. The music is all melody based and "well behaved", but can hardly be considered as mainstream, thanks to Taylor´s wonderful performances and rhythmic openness carried out by the rhythm section.

The piano parts played by Taylor are a striking evidence of his genius and the fact that he is no longer with us underlines the importance of this reissue, as the individual albums are of course no longer available. But the virtuosic bass parts by Danielsson and fabulous drumming by Erskine are equally worth being heard again of course.

As usual with this "Old And New Masters" series, the individual CDs are housed in plain white carton sleeves – a matter of elegance or budget? – and the booklet includes a very long background article, this time by respected critic John KelmanFind albums by this artist, which I seriously doubt many people have the stamina to read these days.

Overall this is an absolute must have for all Jazz piano trio lovers and of course British Jazz enthusiasts, who cherish every keystroke by John Taylor, like yours truly. Brilliant stuff!

MORDY FERBER ~ BEING THERE
HALF NOTE ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1996 Released: 2003

This is the 3rd album as a leader by Israeli guitarist / composer Mordy FerberFind albums by this artist, recorded with a fabulous group of excellent musicians, which includes the rhythm section comprising of bassist Eddie GomezFind albums by this artist and drummer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Brad HatfieldFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist and Norwegian Ole MathisenFind albums by this artist (on one track), percussionist Frank ColonFind albums by this artist and finally bassist Will LeeFind albums by this artist and Japanese trumpeter Tiger OkoshiFind albums by this artist (both on one track). The album presents nine tracks, all original compositions by the leader.

The music is a brilliant collection of beautiful tunes, highly melodic and touching, all superbly performed by all the participants. Although Ferber is the main soloists, this album is not about showing his extraordinary guitar skills, but more of a team effort, to present the compositions at the most harmonious setting. That does not mean, of course, that his guitar is not featured prominently, and for guitar lovers this album is an absolute delight from start to finish.

Also prominent is the extraordinary talent and unique feel of Eddie Gomez, who seems to be an ideal partner in crime herein. His work throughout the album, and especially the duo and trio tracks, where his bass is up front, are simply stunning. But all the musicians on this album seem to have a great time and play their hearts out.

Overall, this is a stunning album in every respect, which spotlights Ferber both as a brilliant guitarist with a unique sound and feel, and an excellent weaver of melodies, which are coherent and aesthetically pleasing. In a world, where true artistry is appreciated, this album should have reached every Jazz lover and guitar enthusiast the world over, but alas that is nor the case. But it is never too late to grab a copy – you won’t regret it!

MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ PRIMAL SCREAM / NEW VINTAGE / CARNIVAL
BGO 1142 (Barcode: 5017261211422) ~ CANADA ~ Jazz-Funk Fusion

Recorded: 1975 - 1978 Released: 2014

This is a reissue of three albums by Canadian Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist released on ColumbiaFind albums on this label during the late part of his stint with the label: "Primal ScreamFind albums with this title" (1976), "New VintageFind albums with this title" (1977) and "CarnivalFind albums with this title" (1978). These albums feature some of the best American Jazz musicians active at the time and mark Ferguson´s commercial success and popularity, well beyond the strict Jazz circles. Among the artists appearing on these albums are: keyboardists Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Bob JamesFind albums by this artist, drummers Steve GaddFind albums by this artist and Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist, guitarists Eric GaleFind albums by this artist and Steve KhanFind albums by this artist, saxophonists David SanbornFind albums by this artist and Joe FarrellFind albums by this artist, trumpeters Marvin StammFind albums by this artist and Jon FaddisFind albums by this artist and many others.

The music is a mixture of original compositions by Ferguson and the composer / arranger Jay ChattawayFind albums by this artist, Jazz standards, film themes, popular songs and Classical pieces, all superbly arranged and executed by the Big Band / Orchestra, with soaring solos by Ferguson the guest stars. Although definitely on the lighter side of the Jazz spectrum, mixing Jazz with Funk, Rock and even Reggae, the music was always tasteful and impeccably executed.

Ferguson´s piercing trumpet sound is still one of the most recognizable sounds in American Jazz and remains unparalleled to this very day.

Personally I have always found the music of Ferguson to be both highly entertaining and artistically relevant, offering classy performances with stand the test of time with ease. Highly recommended!

ROLF KUHN ~ INTERNAL EYES
INTUITION 750447332829 (Barcode: 750447332829) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2000 - 2001 Released: 2001

This is a fine album by German clarinetist / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, one of my all time favorite musicians, recorded with members of the younger generation of the German Jazz scene: organist Frank ChastenierFind albums by this artist, bassist Detlev BeierFind albums by this artist and drummer Wolfgang HaffnerFind albums by this artist and several guest stars: American saxophonist Bob MintzerFind albums by this artist, Swedish pianist Claes CronaFind albums by this artist, French pianist Martial SolalFind albums by this artist, American guitarist Chuck LoebFind albums by this artist and drummer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist. Together they perform ten tunes, five of which are originals by Rolf Kuhn, three are by Mintzer and the remaining two are standards. The album was partly recorded by the legendary sound engineer / producer Walter Quintus and the sound quality is of course excellent.

The music on this album is mostly mainstream Jazz, which pays tribute to the American Jazz tradition, with elegant and sophisticated touches of European Jazz. When Mintzer plays up front, everything sounds American and when Kuhn plays up front everything sounds European, which is hardly surprising. Same can be said about Crona and Solal, who come from two very different Jazz environments. The two tracks that feature Loeb are Fusion oriented. In short this album embraces both the traditional approach and the modern one, treating them both with respect and as a result presents Kuhn as a versatile, relevant figure despite his advanced age.

Kuhn´s clarinet sound, which has been his trademark for decades, is absolutely unique, combining the traditional Jazz approach originating in the early Jazz days and European modernism. Kuhn, who often joins forces with his pianist brother Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, produced a substantial and consistently excellent body of recorded work over time, which in retrospect is an integral part of the European Jazz and one of its finest facets.

This is one of the most accessible and straightforward albums that Kuhn recorded during his extended career and as such is highly recommended to listeners who are not familiar with his work, perhaps serving as an introduction to the Rolf Kuhn universe, which is vast and versatile. Definitely worth exploring!

LELO NAZARIO ~ SIMPLES
UTOPIA 17534 ~ BRAZIL ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1995 - 1998

4th album by the outstanding Brazilian keyboards player / composer Lelo NazarioFind albums by this artist. As usual, Nazario uses some of the best Brazilian musicians to help him out, including saxophonist Teco CardosoFind albums by this artist, legendary singer Marlui MirandaFind albums by this artist and American Master drummer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist as a guest. He composed all the music, which is excellent all the way and includes a mixture of jazz, Brazilian motifs and contemporary classical influences. This album is Nazario’s homage to many fellow musicians from Brazil and the US he admires. The atmosphere is much more relaxed and serene than what he plays on the more Jazz-Rock oriented recordings and there is much more space for his own exquisite playing to be showcased. A most enjoyable musical experience.

JACO PASTORIUS ~ INVITATION
ATLANTIC 247909 (Barcode: 093624790921) ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1983 Released: 2003

3rd album by Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist. Following the recording of his second album Word Of MouthFind albums with this title, Pastorius led a large ensemble during the early 1980’s, which was called by the same name as the title of that album (i.e. "Word Of Mouth"). This album presets a live recording of the ensemble during a Japanese tour, and is considered by many as the best Pastorius recording ever. The band swings and funks superbly, the soloist (Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist, Bob MintzerFind albums by this artist, Toots ThielemansFind albums by this artist and many others) play their hearts out and everybody seems to have a ball. This is obviously one of those “once in a lifetime” moments when everything just clicks together in a musical orgy of sounds. If there is anybody out there, who never heard this album and still considers himself a jazz fan, he is missing a large chunk of his musical education. Well I suppose it’s never too late. Absolutely essential!

HEADS UP 3110 ~ USA ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2005

2nd album by the Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist tribute Big Band, expanding the idea of the debut album recorded a couple of years earlier. The concept remains the same, i.e. to feature Jaco’s compositions and the best bass guitar players on the scene to pay tribute to his genius as a composer and instrumentalist. NICK PURNELL ~ ONETWOTHREE
AH UM 006 ~ UK ~ Big Band Jazz

Recorded: 1990 Released: 1991

This is the only album by British Jazz composer / arranger Nick PurnellFind albums by this artist, recorded with a dreamy large Orchestra, which included such luminaries as trumpeter Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Julian ArguellesFind albums by this artist, trombonist Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Django BatesFind albums by this artist, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist and American drummer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist among others. The album presents ten tracks, all original compositions by Purnell and arranged by him.

The music is absolutely dreamy large ensemble Jazz, based on superbly composed themes and perfectly arranged to utilize the superb lineup, that performs the music. Wheler, Taylor and Arguelles performs dazzling soli through the whole album, and many other musicians also get an opportunity to show their chops.

Although there are many musicians taking part in this recording, the music is rather subtle and delicate, which is rather typical of the British Jazz approach to orchestral music, which emphasizes the ensemble spirit and strong harmony, without utilizing the full power and might available, in favor of style and elegance, somewhat similar to the orchestral work by Michael Gibbs and his ensembles.

Overall, this is a lovely piece of orchestral British Jazz, sadly completely forgotten but absolutely worthy of being remembered. The album is probably not that easy to find, but if it crosses your field of vision, do not hesitate for even one moment, before you grab it!
Side Note
British composer / arranger Nick PurnellFind albums by this artist founded the short-lived Ah UmFind albums on this label label in 1989, which existed until 1993 and released a total of sixteen albums with some of the top British Jazz musicians of that period and a few American guests, which remain as of the finest recordings of that period. For some inexplicable reason all these albums are almost completely obsolete today, despite their excellent musical value, which is a shame, as they all deserve an honorable place in any decent British Jazz collection.

KUBA STANKIEWICZ ~ THE MUSIC OF BRONISLAW KAPER
WARNER MUSIC POLAND 825646368730 (Barcode: 825646368730) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2015 Released: 2016

This is the second installment in a series of albums by Polish Jazz pianist / composer Kuba StankiewiczFind albums by this artist dedicated to the music written by the composers of Polish / Jewish origins, who are know primarily as the great American composers of many classic Jazz standards, and their true origins are almost completely unheard of. Same as its predecessor, which was dedicated to the music of Victor YoungFind albums by this artist ("The Music Of Victor YoungFind albums with this title"), this album was recorded by the piano trio with Polish (resident in the US) bassist Darek OleszkiewiczFind albums by this artist and veteran American drummer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist and presents this time nine compositions by Bronislaw KaperFind albums by this artist (two of which were co-composed by Walter JurmannFind albums by this artist, his musical partner for many years), including his most famous standards and a few much lesser know pieces.

Stankiewicz, as usual, took great pains to conduct a serious research about the composer´s life and music before he selected the compositions included on this album. He is definitely quite a perfectionist in what he does, and this deserves our outmost admiration. The album includes a very educational write-up about Kaper by Anna FerensFind albums by this artist as well as an introductory text by Stankiewicz (in Polish and English) and the album´s artwork continues the design originated on the previous album. In short this is a very professional and highly aesthetic piece of music production in every aspect.

The music is of course divine, its beauty timeless and these particular performances treat it with the respect these classics deserve. Stankiewicz and his cohorts play sparingly and delicately, treating each and every note like it was a priceless jewel. The rhythm section accompanies the pianist amicably and harmoniously, filling in the space but never disturbing the piano melody line and the improvised sections.

In many respects this is a classic piano trio with a dream team playing perfect music – what else can we ask for. This is the Jazz traditions at its best, without being pretentious or condescending. It is an absolute must for all piano trio connoisseurs, and a great piece of Jazz history. As usual Stankiewicz, who happens to be a friend of mine, emerges victorious and highly accomplished, for which all lovers of great Jazz, myself included, thank him wholeheartedly. Not to be missed!

KUBA STANKIEWICZ ~ THE MUSIC OF VICTOR YOUNG
WARNER CLASSICS 825646200313 (Barcode: 825646200313) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2014

The making of this album turned out to be a great journey for everybody involved, full of magic and musical, historical, emotional and educational discoveries, all intertwined and dramatic, which started as a seemingly simple and straightforward task of recording a tribute album to one of America´s greatest 20th Century composers and eventually emerged as a virtual bridge between the "old" and "new" continents, linking biographical treasures, personal encounters, unearthed documents and above all the hearts of so many people on both sides of the great "pond", myself included. Kuba StankiewiczFind albums by this artist, who is not only a sublime artist but also a wonderful human being, was the catalyst and the driving force behind this project, and his limitless faith, energy and dedication are encapsulated herein. We all hope that the listeners of this enchanting music will join Kuba and all of us in a wondrous adventure.

The biography of Victor YoungFind albums by this artist is surely as dramatic and full of unexpected turns and twists as many of the movies he wrote the musical scores for. Born in Chicago at the turn of the 20th Century, his parents were Polish immigrants of Jewish origin, who had a rich musical background. He was discovered very early as an immensely talented child prodigy, having started to play the violin at the age of six. The tragic early death of his mother influenced the decision to send the ten years old Victor and his sister Helen to the homeland of their ancestors, Poland, where their grandparents still resided, and where he received his formal musical education at the Imperial Music Academy in Warsaw, finishing his studies at the momentous period when Poland received its independence after being occupied and divided between the European Empires for almost a century and a half. Young made quite a career as a virtuoso concert violinist and even managed to play for the Russian Czar Nikolai, which almost cost him his life when the Bolshevik revolution erupted and all people connected to the Czar were promptly dealt with. After a life-threatening encounter in Russia, Young managed to flee to Warsaw, then Paris and later finally returned to his Chicago home.

By mid 1930s Young settled in Hollywood and concentrated on composing music for the motion pictures, in time becoming one of the most successful and prolific representatives of the American Dream. He was nominated 22 times for the Academy Award but his only Oscar was awarded to him posthumously. He died at the ridiculous age of 56 leaving behind him a tremendous legacy of hundreds of film scores and wonderful songs, which are still being performed on an everyday basis. There is hardly a Jazz gig anywhere on this planet, where at least one of his standards is not performed, after having been recorded countless times by every imaginable Jazz performer. And yet at the same time almost nobody on the same planet of ours is aware of the fact that Young´s roots lie deeply on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean and his life fits into the "wandering Jew" pattern like a silk glove.

The decade Victor Young spent in Poland, as well as his rich Polish roots, remain almost completely absent from his biography and are totally unknown not only in the USA but sadly also in Poland. Generations of Polish Jazz musicians, who played countless times the Victor Young standards, never even imagined that the person behind this music has such close ties to Poland and its Culture. Kuba Stankiewicz took us all on a discovery trip, walking down the streets of Warsaw where Young and his family lived, which he traced from the documents and correspondence between Young and his family members. Most of these highly personal and fascinating documents and photographs were made available by Young´s niece, Helen´s daughter, the wonderful Bobbie Hill FrombergFind albums by this artist, who lives in LA and who embraced this project wholeheartedly, sharing her extensive family archive with us. I imagine that playing Young´s music for Bobbie in her apartment on a piano, that Young bought as a wedding present for his sister, must have been quite a thrilling experience for Kuba and Darek OleszkiewiczFind albums by this artist, who was also present at the occasion.

The diploma Victor Young received from the Warsaw Music Academy shows that he studied composition with Roman StatkowskiFind albums by this artist, a completely forgotten Polish composer, who surely deserves to be rediscovered. This led Kuba Stankiewicz to find out more about Statkowski and later on to be enchanted by his profoundly beautiful music. Including one of Statkowski´s compositions on this album is therefore completely natural, especially in view of the enormous influence Statkowski had on Young, which in fact is audible, albeit subtly, in several of Young´s compositions. But even without the Statkowski influence, it is pretty apparent that although Young was a bona fide American composer for decades, the intrinsic Polish lyricism and melancholy, as well as his Jewish approach to melody, stayed with him for all these years, deeply embedded in his heritage and influenced by the growing-up period he has spent in Poland and learned from Polish educators. And as we were tracking Young´s life and music, it didn´t take long to se the similarities between his fate and that of several other famous American composers, like Bronislaw KaperFind albums by this artist and Henryk WarsFind albums by this artist, fellow Jewish wanderers, whose Polish roots are almost completely obscured and are waiting to be exposed.

But of course it´s the music present on this album, which is after all the center of the listener´s attention, regardless of the contextual relevance. Recorded in a classic piano trio format, the most formidable chamber environment available in Jazz, it lovingly presents the music of Young, which although in most cases is well know, also includes some of his lesser known pieces as well as one of Statkowski´s beautiful compositions, arranged by Stankiewicz. Accompanied by bassist Darek Oleszkiewicz and formidable American drummer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist, Kuba Stankiewicz delivers the music of Young with passion and emotion, but also with great respect. As already mentioned these compositions have been previously recorded countless times and therefore playing them anew presents an enormous challenge. I hope the listeners will find the spark that Kuba, Darek and Peter share with us, respectfully and elegantly, proving that the long journey was worth the effort. Thank you for reading and for listening!
Side Note
The above are my liner notes included on this album's artwork.

I am honored when asked by the Artists to write liner notes for their albums, always hoping that my words reflect the true spirit of the music. This is also a symbol of our mutual respect and friendship developed over the years.

The same is also true when Record Labels ask me to write liner notes for their releases, mostly in the case of reissues of archival albums, which is a symbol of their appreciation of my knowledge and historical perspective and my recognition of their dedication to the preservation of the history of recorded music and the effort to keep human Culture and Aesthetics alive.

It is not often that a Rock musician decides to cross over into much more advanced musical environment, such as Jazz or World Music and does so completely and seriously. PoliceFind albums by this artist guitarist Andy SummersFind albums by this artist, obviously known to most Rock listeners on this planet, is one of those musicians, who changed their path and successfully developed a "new" career. This album, which is a tribute to the music of the great American pianist / composer Thelonious MonkFind albums by this artist, showcases Summers as a splendid Jazz guitarist, with beautiful technique and exquisite taste. Of course Summers manages to achieve a completely unique sound and voicing on his instrument, which retain a certain affiliation with his Rock roots, but overall the album is an absolute knockout. With drummer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist, organist Joey DeFrancescoFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave CarpenterFind albums by this artist, StingFind albums by this artist doing vocals on one track and many other superb musicians, this album is a true delight. Life is full of surprises!

9th album by Weather ReportFind albums by this artist and their first live recording. The double album features the strongest WR lineup ever (Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist, Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist, Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist and Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist) and proves that WR were as good if not better live then in the studio. The album also includes 4 new studio tracks at the end. The energy and the virtuosity displayed here is absolutely stunning and considering the fact that WR was constantly working since several years when this was recorded, their telephatic cooperation is understandable. Essential!

This magnificent Box Set summarizes the 15 years (and 15 studio albums) of activity by the seminal Jazz / Fusion band Weather ReportFind albums by this artist, which shaped the future of the genre probably more than any other band in history. The set includes 3 CDs and a DVD. The CDs give a solid overview of the band’s output over the years (1971-1985), starting with a few pre-WR cuts (to show the direction Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist and Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist were taking) and even trying to predict the future by including a DJ remix of one of the tunes. To spice things a bit a few previously unreleased tracks are included. The true gem of the set is the 2 hours long DVD, filmed during WR Heavy WeatherFind albums with this title tour (with Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist and Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist), which is outstanding in every respect (sound and vision) and alone is worth the price of the entire Box Set. If you don’t own all the WR albums already (or any WR albums – shame on you) this is a wonderful opportunity to enter the magic word of WR and get hooked. If you do own the albums, you’ll still want the set for the bonus tracks and the DVD – in short it’s a winner any way you look at it!

WEATHER REPORT ~ LIVE IN OFFENBACH 1978
ART OF GROOVE 80090 (Barcode: 885513800909) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion

Recorded: 1978 Released: 2011

This is a live recording by the legendary Fusion ensemble Weather ReportFind albums by this artist, captured when it enjoyed the peak of its popularity. The band in its kernel lineup with keyboardist Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist, bassist Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist and drummer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist performs over two hours of their classic material. The show, captured by the German WDR, is presented here on two CDs and a DVD, which includes the same material as the CDs.

As I have already written extensively in my review of the Weather Report´s album "The Legendary Tapes: 1978-1981Find albums with this title", additional releases of the band´s live material are often quite problematic for a variety of reasons: the sound quality, performance quality and other considerations. The numerous fans of the band are therefore faced with the dilemma of craving for more previously unreleased material on one hand and getting recordings which are of problematic quality and basically offer nothing new beyond what was already revealed many times in the past on the other hand.

To put things in perspective, this is still Weather Report – one of the greatest Fusion bands ever, so the music is splendid all the way through, as expected. The only shortcoming of this release is the comparison with very similar live recordings, which present almost identical musical content in somewhat better quality, both sonically and artistically.

For die-hard Weather Report fans this is of course an absolute must have, but others who already own many live albums by the band, might think twice about it. Personally I enjoyed both the audio and the video presentations, but I am definitely far from being objective about something, that dominated the soundtrack of my life for many years.

WEATHER REPORT ~ THE LEGENDARY TAPES: 1978-1981
COLUMBIA 888751412729 (Barcode: 888751412729) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion

Recorded: 1978 - 1981 Released: 2015

This is a collection of archival recordings by the seminal Weather ReportFind albums by this artist, one of the most important and groundbreaking ensembles which shaped the state of music as we know it and at the same time also achieved immense popularity both as recording and live acts, which of course helped to spread the gospel. The music on the four CDs which are included herein was recorded live by two lineups of the ensemble: the quartet with keyboardist Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Wayne ShorterFind albums by this artist, bassist Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist and drummer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist (1978), and the quintet which adds percussionist Robert Thomas, Jr.Find albums by this artist (1980-1981). All the recordings are "bootleg" quality and in fact originate from recordings captured on portable cassette recorders (for those people who don´t know what this is, please Wiki it), which means that in spite of an effort to improve the sound quality it remains mostly Lo-Fi, sometimes almost painfully so.

Peter Erskine, who is the producer of this collection, in his extensive liner notes explains the circumstances of these recordings and adds his personal comments on a track by track basis. He wisely points out the differences about the two facets of Weather Report: the studio recordings which created a long series of incredible albums using advanced studio technology and a long process of mixing, editing and overdubbing following the recording, and the live performances, like the ones captured here, which were, as he puts it: "completely, totally, unapologetically and insanely live".

Since I already wrote extensively about Weather Report and their albums, I´ll say only what I find relevant about this specific release. When it was first announced by ColumbiaFind albums on this label I already had some mixed feelings about it. A four CDs worth of previously unreleased material by one of the most popular Jazz / Fusion bands of all times sounds simply too good to be true. When the actual set arrived on my desk, sadly my suspicions turned out to be painfully accurate. Although there are plenty of great moments on these four CDs, the overall result is simply disappointing for many reasons.

Firstly there is the sound quality and the recording quality (i.e. balance, distortion and other aspects of live recordings) which turn out to be a major hindrance when listening to this material. I often say that where there is sublime music, the sound quality is only secondary; sadly this does not seem to help in case of this collection.

Secondly there is nothing here that we haven´t already heard. Of course in case of Jazz every live performance is unique, but often the unique performance can be very similar to other unique performances and as such are of lesser importance. Obviously some performances are less inspired that others, and when looking at an artist´s legacy, I prefer to remember and cherish the most inspired ones. And yes I agree that Pastorius was a Genius, but if I hear one more Pastorius solo I´ll go ballistic.

Thirdly I am always worried about the motivation behind releasing archival material. Was this material released based on its strength, artistic merit and historic importance, or simply to squeeze some more money from the dwindling music buying public in a collapsing music market? I´ll let the listener be the judge of that.

And lastly the collection was released in a completely non-standard packaging (sizewise), somewhere in between the CD and the DVD size. Someone wanted to be creative all of a sudden? We, the oppressed buying public, have to be able to store these artifacts somehow and this one does not fit in the standard CD shelves!

For me Weather Report are a legend and I´d really love to keep it like that. This collection does put a slight dent on the ensemble´s iconic status, as far as I am concerned, which I deeply regret. On the other hand forever, four hours of previously unreleased material by Weather Report is devilishly tempting…

Recorded: 1982

11th album by Weather ReportFind albums by this artist. For some strange reason this was self-titled again (same as the debut album) and the cover art surely deserves a nomination for one of the ungliest ever produced. The music however is as good as one might expect from these brilliant musicians. KENNY WHEELER ~ KAYAK
AH UM 012 (Barcode: 5017771001223) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1992 Released: 1992

This is a criminally little known album by the celebrated British Jazz trumpeter / composer Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, released on the short-lived and sadly forgotten Ah UmFind albums on this label Records, owned by Nick PurnellFind albums by this artist. Wheeler leads a splendid ensemble, which comprises of the absolute crème de la crème of the British Jazz scene at the time: saxophonists Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist and Julian ArguellesFind albums by this artist, French horn player John RookFind albums by this artist, trombonists Dave HorlerFind albums by this artist and Dave StewartFind albums by this artist, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist, bassist Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist and American drummer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist. Trombonist Chris PyneFind albums by this artist and pianist John HorlerFind albums by this artist are added on the four last tracks only. The album presents seven Wheeler originals, the last four of which create a suite. All the music was recorded during a one-day session, which is absolutely amazing considering the complexity of the arrangements, but of course all these musicians were absolute Masters of the trade.

The music is obviously absolutely brilliant, as everything Wheeler ever created and most of it was never recorded by Wheeler again with other ensembles. He briefly describes the origin of all the compositions on the album in the liner notes, one of which is a wonderfully crafted tribute to Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist´s compositions, a rather unlikely connection, but nevertheless true.

The playing is of course also magnificent from start to finish, with plenty of wonderful solos by the participants and a superb ensemble performance, typical of British Jazz at its absolute best. The music was also excellently recorded with wonderful separation and perfect sound quality, which of curse enhances the listening pleasure even more.

Overall this is lost perfect gem which deserves a proud place in any serious British Jazz collection, and although quite difficult to come by these days, it is by all means worth the effort needed to hunt for it. Essential Kenny Wheeler!

KENNY WHEELER ~ MUSIC FOR LARGE & SMALL ENSEMBLES
ECM 1415/16 (Barcode: 042284315227) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1990 Released: 1990

Trumpeter / composer Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist has been one of the great pillars of the British and international Jazz scene for five consecutive decades. His role as one of the most creative protagonists of the British / European Jazz revolution in the 1960s / 1970s was invaluable, but Wheeler continued his seemingly endless streak of creativity into the 21st Century, staying relevant and up to date, with very few rivaling forces of his magnitude. This album, in retrospect, is in many respects a pinnacle of his recording career and firmly belongs to the exclusive club of the top Jazz recordings of all time. Wheeler present here some of his best and most ambitious compositions, both as a composer for a large Jazz orchestra and a small Jazz combo, like the quintet featured here. The list of names of the participating musicians – all 19 of them – reads like the who´s who of modern British Jazz with a couple of American guests (guitarist John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist and drummer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist) added for good measure. Pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist, his wife the divine vocalist Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist, bassist Dave HollandFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist, trombonist Paul RutherfordFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist are just the more familiar of these names. The music is of course heavenly, regardless of the large or small format, both melodically, harmonically and structurally. Wheeler emerges as a Master composer and bandleader and the resulting music is a source of immense pleasure, both aesthetically and intellectually. This is a masterpiece and an essential piece of music, which is a worthy addition to any serious music library. Beyond essential!

Truly (and surprisingly) "Essential"; I generally avoid large ensembles, but this is different as the individual voices of the specific participants were planned for and can be clearly heard

NORMA WINSTONE / WILL BARTLETT ~ THE SOUNDLESS DARK
JELLYMOULDJAZZ 034 (Barcode: 5029385864279) ~ UK ~ Jazz & Poetry

Recorded: 2022 Released: 2022

This is a duo album by British vocalist Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist and pianist Will BartlettFind albums by this artist, dedicated to the poetry of British poet / novelist Philip LarkinFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten tracks, nine of which were composed by Bartlett and one by Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist. All the lyrics are by Larkin. Saxophonist Tony KofiFind albums by this artist and narrator Robin InceFind albums by this artist guest each on three tracks.

Every recording by Norma Winstone is of course heaven on earth as far as I am concerned, and since this is also a Jazz & Poetry project, I am double biased. But in truth, considering Norma’s status on the British Jazz scene and her recorded legacy, this is hardly surprising. She is, after all, the First Lady of the genre and has absolutely no equals as far as intelligent and aesthetic approach to vocals is concerned. She does not have to prove anything anymore, which allows her to engage in projects that are close to her heart, and since she has an impeccable taste and unequalled talent, she just can’t go wrong, as this album proves once again.

This intimate project requires, as usual, attentive listening, as the music, although quite melodic, is far from being simple, and the poetry is often challenging as well. Despite the controversy surrounding Larkin’s persona and his ideology, on this album he emerges a lost romantic, more than anything else. The music is all perfect for the selected texts and Norma’s delivery is nothing short of Divine, again not surprisingly.

Overall, it is absolutely enthralling to hear Norma in superb form, as if the passing time existed in another dimension. This album is a sublime addition to her outstanding recorded legacy and an essential listening. Thank you, my Dear, for being who you are and for proving that life is worth living!
