  | CHASE ~ CHASE / ENNEA / PURE MUSIC BGO 842 (Barcode: 5017261208422) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock Recorded: 1971 - 1973 Released: 2008
The US Jazz-Rock Fusion ensemble ChaseFind albums by this artist is perhaps the least known among its contemporaries like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist or even FlockFind albums by this artist, but I personally loved them very much and kept them in my memories all these years. It is therefore a joyful occasion to see their complete recording legacy being reissued and available again.
Led by brilliant trumpeter Bill ChaseFind albums by this artist, who came to fame as the lead trumpet in Woody HermanFind albums by this artist´s HerdFind albums by this artist, known to deliver some of the strongest high notes ever played on this instrument, and who also played with other orchestras led by such famous leaders like Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist and Stan KentonFind albums by this artist. By the late 1960s Bill Chase became somewhat bored by playing Big Band scores and decided to plunge full steam ahead into the invigorating world of Jazz-Rock Fusion. He collected a group of young but highly experienced young players, who shared his vision, creating the nine-piece band Chase.
Signed with EpicFind albums on this label, the band recorded 3 brilliant albums, included here, before Bill Chase and three other members of the band tragically perished in a plane crash, putting an end to one of the most promising bands of the time. Chase included a four-trumpet front line, backed by a rocky rhythm section (keyboards, guitar, bass & drums) and a lead singer (Terry RichardsFind albums by this artist, who has a voice quite similar to David Clayton-ThomasFind albums by this artist). This unique lineup brings together the better of the two worlds – Jazz and Rock – creating a superb mixture, which only very few contenders seemed to possess. Most of the material is composed by Bill Chase, with a few classic songs getting a fresh arrangement.
All three albums are equally brilliant, with the last one being the most mature and richly orchestrated, with expanded improvised solos and mostly instrumental. Bill Chase delivers several of his high-pitched solos, which leave the listener completely breathless. All in all listening to these albums in a row is an exhilarating experience, hitting right where it counts! This music aged extremely well and today, some 35 years after it was recorded, is still some of the best stuff you can let into your ears – absolutely essential!

  | GEORGIE FAME ~ SEVENTH SON / GOING HOME BGO 700 (Barcode: 5017261207005) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1969 - 1971 Released: 2008
Contrary to what most people know about singer / songwriter / keyboards player Georgie FameFind albums by this artist, his true aspiration was always to sing Jazz. Although he arrived on the British scene in the mid-1960s as a Pop singer, with several singles charting over the years, pretty soon he decided that a Pop idol was the last thing he wanted to be and moved away from the Pop image as fast as he could. By the end of the 1960s Fame was already singing in front of Jazz bands and his self-penned material had a distinctive Jazzy feel.
This album includes two of Fame’s LPs recorded in 1969 and 1971 respectively, both great examples of his great sensitivity and musicality. On Seventh SonFind albums with this title he is supported by a dreamy Jazz band, which includes such illustrious players as Art ThemenFind albums by this artist, Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist (saxophone), Derek WatkinsFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Chris PyneFind albums by this artist (trombone), Brian OdgersFind albums by this artist (bass) and John MarshallFind albums by this artist (drums), who play some outstanding solos. The album was produce by Fame’s friend Alan PriceFind albums by this artist, another Pop star with Jazz inspirations.
On Going HomeFind albums with this title the supporting band is the Keith MansfieldFind albums by this artist orchestra, another quite jazzy outfit, which played for example behind Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist, when he lived and recorded in Britain at the same period. Although perhaps only marginally Jazz, these two albums are a great example of the openness the music industry was willing to extend towards the artists, who wanted to do “their own thing”, something that lasted for a very brief period of time.
Fame’s worm tone and great feel for the music are definitely worth a recollection and this album is a great trip down the memory lane. Probably for people in the autumn years, like myself, but still great fun.

  | MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ CHAMELEON / CONQUISTADOR / HOT BGO 1199 (Barcode: 5017261211996) ~ CANADA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1974 - 1979 Released: 2015
This is a reissue of three albums by Canadian trumpeter / composer / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist released on ColumbiaFind albums on this label during his 1970s stint with label: "ChameleonFind albums with this title" (1974), "ConquistadorFind albums with this title" (1977) and "HotFind albums with this title" (1979). These albums feature some of the best American Jazz musicians at the time and mark Ferguson´s peak commercial success and popularity, well beyond the strict Jazz circles.
Following Ferguson´s revolutionary recordings in the UK during the late 1960s and early 1970s, called the "M. F. HornFind albums with this title" albums, which featured a superb Big Band comprised of top British Jazz musicians at the time, and which defined the Jazz-Rock Fusion Big Band sound, he returned to the US in 1973 continuing the "M. F. Horn" series and than recording the first album on this reissue set, which also continued the Jazz-Rock direction.
The other two albums included here present a more commercial approach emphasized by the phenomenal success of the "Rocky" movie theme (entitled "Gonna Fly Now"), which charted as a single not only on the US Jazz charts, but also on the US Pop charts. However, despite the more commercial approach, these albums still offer superb Jazz performances, first-rate Big Band arrangements and brilliant soloing.
The music on these albums remains completely timeless and offers some of the most exciting Big Band recordings made in the US, featuring exquisite arrangements and excellent soloing by the leader and other musicians. Ferguson´s piercing trumpet sound is still one of the most recognizable sounds in American Jazz and remains unparalleled to this very day.
Personally I have always found the music of Ferguson to be both highly entertaining and artistically relevant, offering classy performances with stand the test of time with ease. Highly recommended!

  | MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ IT`S MY TIME / HOLLYWOOD BGO 1202 (Barcode: 5017261212023) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Funk Fusion Recorded: 1980 - 1982 Released: 2015
This is a reissue of last two albums by Canadian Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist released on ColumbiaFind albums on this label during his stint with the label: "It`s My TimeFind albums with this title" (1980) and "HollywoodFind albums with this title" (1982), which altogether produced fourteen fabulous albums. These albums feature some of the best American Jazz / Fusion musicians active at the time and mark Ferguson´s commercial success and popularity, well beyond the strict Jazz circles. Among the artists appearing on these albums are: bassist Stanley ClarkeFind albums by this artist (who also produced "Hollywood"), drummer Leon Ndugu ChanclerFind albums by this artist, percussionist Alex AcunaFind albums by this artist, guitarist Lee RitenourFind albums by this artist, keyboardist George DukeFind albums by this artist and many others.
The music is a mixture of original compositions by Ferguson and the trombonist / composer / arranger Nick LaneFind albums by this artist and other musicians playing on these albums, Jazz standards, film themes, popular songs, all superbly arranged and executed by the Big Band / Orchestra, with soaring solos by Ferguson the guest stars. Although definitely on the lighter side of the Jazz spectrum, mixing Jazz with Funk, Rock and even Soul, the music was always tasteful and impeccably executed. Despite the cold and vilified reception by snobbish Jazz critics at the time, these albums despite their popular approach were by far more professional than most of the endless Bebop doodling American Jazz has to offer at the time.

  | MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ M. F. HORN / M. F. HORN 2 / M. F. HORN 3 BGO 1110 (Barcode: 5017261211101) ~ CANADA ~ Brass Rock Recorded: 1970 - 1973 Released: 2013
This is a reissue of three albums by Canadian Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist. These are the second, fourth and fifth albums Ferguson recorded for CBSFind albums on this label in UK after he signed with the label in late 1968, following his move to the UK from India. The first two albums were produced by the brilliant arranger / conductor Keith MansfieldFind albums by this artist, who worked with Ferguson on all his UK recordings except the last, i.e. the third album included here, which was produced by Teo MaceroFind albums by this artist and which was mostly recorded in UK and had some minor touches added later in the US. "M. F. HornFind albums with this title" was released as "The World Of Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title" in the US.
Upon his arrival in UK Ferguson made a dramatic shift in his approach to the Big Band Jazz he played for so many years previously. Influenced by what was happening in music at the time, especially the birth of Jazz-Rock Fusion, and the Brass Rock ensembles like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist, FlockFind albums by this artist and many others, he was determined to pursue this new direction as well. Obviously the British scene was a highly fertile ground, with many British Jazz musicians already very much involved in that idiom. The "M. F. Horn" series of albums reflects that glorious period perfectly!
The first two "M. F. Horn" albums and the album "Alive & Well In LondonFind albums with this title" (released as "Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title" in the US), which was "sandwiched" between them, follow a similar formula of presenting a mixture of wonderful arrangements of popular songs and original compositions, arranged by Mansfield, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, Adrian DroverFind albums by this artist and John CameronFind albums by this artist and performed by a dreamy band that features such luminaries as trombonists Chris PyneFind albums by this artist and Derek WadsworthFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Pete KingFind albums by this artist and Brian SmithFind albums by this artist, pianist Pete JacksonFind albums by this artist, percussionist Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist and other top British Jazz players at the time.
"M. F. Horn 3Find albums with this title" is somewhat different in the choice of material, as it does not include covers of popular material but includes soundtracks, Jazz standards and no less than three original compositions by pianist Pete Jackson. It is generally considered as the Jazziest album of the "M. F. Horn" series, probably due to the fact that Macero produced it, but in retrospect it is undoubtedly an integral part of the same musical direction and spirit.
Overall these albums are great piece of the Ferguson´s recorded legacy, which is certainly worth being remembered. The magic Brass Rock / British Big Band period is certainly a pinnacle of his creativity, and a superb addition to the idiom, which has a lasting value and deserves an honorable place in any serious music collection. An absolute must!

  | MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ M. F. HORN 2 / THE BALLAD STYLE OF MAYNARD FERGUSON VOCALION 8421 (Barcode: 765387842123) ~ CANADA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1969 - 1972 Released: 2006
Canadian Jazz trumpeter / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist arrived in UK in late 1968, where Jazz was accepted as a legitimate Art Form and highly appreciated. European audiences were more receptive to new sounds and musical experimentation, be it Free Jazz or Jazz-Rock Fusion, and therefore an ideal refuge for many frustrated American musicians. Ferguson resided in UK between 1968 and 1973, where he was warmly received and his talent promptly recognized. He recorded five albums in UK for the CBSFind albums on this label label, which are considered the pinnacle of his recorded legacy.
This album combines two of these albums, the last and the first of his UK recordings. In spite of the differences between the two albums they both showcase Ferguson’s amazing abilities as an instrumentalist. His famous high-pitched cadenzas and screaming, soaring finales are of course legendary.
"M. F. Horn 2Find albums with this title" is an excellent Jazz-Rock Fusion album, similar to the work of American bands like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist and ChaseFind albums by this artist or British bands like IfFind albums by this artist, but rather than leading a combo, Ferguson is riding the powerful locomotive of a full-fledged big band / brass orchestra, which of course makes a huge difference to the overall sound. Conducted by Keith MansfieldFind albums by this artist, a brilliant arranger and producer, the band comprised of the absolute best British Jazz horn players at the time and sounds like a million dollars. The clever and sophisticated arrangements suit Ferguson’s abilities perfectly and the album is an absolute blast from start to finish.
"The Ballad Style Of Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title" is a complete contrast, showcasing the trumpeter’s solos against a lushly playing orchestra, directed again by Keith Mansfield, who also arranged the music. Some Jazz fans might shrug at this music, considering it almost a Pop effort, but honestly anybody who can appreciate great trumpet performance and a superb orchestra supporting the soloist will find this certainly worth their while. Great stuff!

  | MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ M. F. HORN 3 / M. F. HORN 4 & 5 - LIVE AT JIMMY`S VOCALION 8429 (Barcode: 765387842925) ~ CANADA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1973 Released: 2006
Following an almost five years long exile in the UK, trumpeter / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist returned to the US in 1973. His new producer for ColumbiaFind albums on this label was no other than Teo MaceroFind albums by this artist, famous for his long association with Miles DavisFind albums by this artist.
The album "M. F. Horn 3Find albums with this title" was still recorded mostly in UK and featured the same incredible big band that played with Ferguson on "M. f. HornFind albums with this title" and "M. F. Horn 2Find albums with this title" and only the finishing touches were done in NY. Stylistically the album is also quite similar to its predecessor, presenting powerful version of Jazz-Rock Fusion with brass, brilliantly arranged and splendidly executed.
The next album, a double recorded live in NY, was to be his ultimate recording. Fronting a great big band, which included several European players who played on his previous albums, as well as new American players, Ferguson plays brilliantly, pushing the band to unbelievable heights. The material selected for the recording is more mainstream Jazz than the distinctive Jazz-Rock Fusion predecessors, but the high energy and dominant rhythm section create a special blend, which is quite different from traditional American big band music.
This was Ferguson’s finest hour and his future attempts to capture wider audiences by performing covers of popular hits were sadly less memorable. This stuff is it – sheer genius at work and a must for any big band enthusiast.

  | MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ M. F. HORN 4 & 5 – LIVE AT JIMMY`S BGO 1307 (Barcode: 5017261213075) ~ CANADA ~ Brass Rock Recorded: 1973 Released: 2017
This is a reissue of the album by Canadian Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist, recorded live at the famous NY club "Jimmy´s". Originally released as a double LP, this was the last chapter of the "M. F. HornFind albums with this title" series and marks the end of Ferguson´s British adventure, and his return to the US. The album was produced by the legendary ColumbiaFind albums on this label producer Teo MaceroFind albums by this artist, known for his work with Miles DavisFind albums by this artist and producer of countless other seminal Jazz recordings.
This album includes ten expanded arrangements of popular songs, Jazz standards and original material, brilliantly performed by Ferguson and his band, which included three British players who took part in the recording of the earlier "M. F. Horn" albums: saxophonist Andy MacintoshFind albums by this artist, pianist Pete JacksonFind albums by this artist (who plays electric piano here and contributed two original compositions) and drummer Randy JonesFind albums by this artist. Saxophonists Ferdinand PovelFind albums by this artist from Netherlands and Bruce JohnstoneFind albums by this artist from New Zealand are also among the band members with the rest of the players being Americans.
This album marks almost the end of Ferguson´s love affair with the Brass Rock / Jazz-Rock Fusion, which would be finalized by the recording of "ChameleonFind albums with this title" album a year later. The rest of Ferguson´s 1970s recordings on Columbia will be more commercially oriented, but still full of great performances and excellent music.
Overall this album is a great piece of the Ferguson´s recorded legacy, which is certainly worth being remembered. It finalizes the wonderful Brass Rock / British Big Band period, which is certainly a pinnacle of his creativity, and a superb addition to the idiom, and which has a lasting value. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ THE BALLAD STYLE OF MAYNARD FERGUSON / ALIVE & WELL IN LONDON BGO 1206 (Barcode: 5017261212061) ~ CANADA ~ Brass Rock Recorded: 1969 - 1971 Released: 2016
This is a reissue of two albums by Canadian Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist. These are the first and third albums Ferguson recorded for CBSFind albums on this label in UK after he signed with the label in late 1968, following his move to the UK from India. Both albums were produced by the brilliant arranger / conductor Keith MansfieldFind albums by this artist, who worked with Ferguson on all his UK recordings.

Obviously the British scene was a highly fertile ground, with many British Jazz musicians already very much involved in that idiom.
However his ambitions had to be postponed for a while, due to the fact that CBS was mostly a Pop / MOR repertoire oriented label and wanted, at least until the label heads could be persuaded otherwise, start Ferguson´s CBS stretch with a much more commercial recording, which resulted in the recording of "The Ballad Style Of Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title". The material consisted of eleven arrangements of well known movie themes and other popular songs, but in the capable hands of Mansfield and his superb orchestra, which included some of the best British Jazz musicians at the time, and of course Ferguson´s fabulous trumpet playing characterized by the piercing high notes, the album, although certainly widely appealing, remains a masterpiece of Jazz flavored popular orchestral music.
"Alive & Well In LondonFind albums with this title" (a.k.a. "Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title") is a completely different story. It followed the recording of the second album for CBS entitled "M. F. HornFind albums with this title" (a.k.a. "The World Of Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title"), which gave a birth to a series of "M. F. Horn" albums, and which opened a new chapter in Ferguson´s recording legacy, which find him playing a soaring Jazz-Rock / Brass Rock arrangements of popular songs and original material by the members of the orchestra.

  | WYNTON MARSALIS ~ LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY WOUNDED BIRD 4675 (Barcode: 664140467521) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1986 Released: 2007
Recorded live during a couple of nights at the Washington, D.C. club Blues Alley, this album captures 25 years old trumpeter / composer / bandleader Wynton MarsalisFind albums by this artist and his quartet doing their thing. Marsalis was already a "living legend", after spending the last half decade in the epicenter of public (Jazz and otherwise) eye. Behind him a series of Jazz and Classical Music recordings, received with almost universal applause and a long string of standing ovations at clubs and concert halls, which fallowed his live appearances. It was time to share the excitement of a live performance with a wider audience via a live recording and perhaps prove once and for all that the "living legend" status was not hype, but was based on solid grounds. The quartet, which earlier that year recorded the splendid "J MoodFind albums with this title" album, consisted of Marsalis, pianist Marcus RobertsFind albums by this artist, bassist Robert HurstFind albums by this artist and drummer Jeff WattsFind albums by this artist. The double album presents the music at the natural order of performance (with obvious editing), with each of the two records covering a separate night, two sets each night. This results in some of the tunes to be repeated twice, which of course is highly educational, as the performances are completely different, as appropriate for Jazz. The music, mostly written by Marsalis, with a few standards included as well, is mostly up tempo, which suits better a live performance situation and perhaps purposely allows the leader to "show off", proving his point. Regardless of the background information, hidden agendas and other less relevant factors, the music captured on this album is absolutely outstanding, turning it into one of the best live Jazz albums ever recorded. Wynton plays like a Greek God, with flow, technique, sound and virtuosity unparalleled by any of his peers, hitting the high register with might and sustain worthy of Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist. The pianist delivers incredible solos, full of sublime contents both lyrically and rhythmically and the bass / drums backbone drives the music at a neck-breaking speed with elegance and zest. Whatever one might think of Wynton Marsalis as a person becomes completely irrelevant in view of the music presented here – he is a phenomenal performer and a great asset to the music, which really is all that matters. Absolutely essential piece of music!

  | JOE ZAWINUL ~ THE RISE & FALL OF THE THIRD STREAM / MONEY IN THE POCKET RHINO 71675 (Barcode: 081227167523) ~ AUSTRIA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1965 - 1967 Released: 1994
Joe ZawinulFind albums by this artist arrived in the US in 1958, after being one of the first European musicians to win a scholarship to Berklee, but he left the school almost immediately and became active on the US jazz scene as pianist, arranger and composer. He played with Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist, Slide HamptonFind albums by this artist and Dinah WashingtonFind albums by this artist before landing on the piano chair with Cannonball AdderleyFind albums by this artist’s quintet, where he stayed for 9 years (1961-1969). Towards the end of his Adderley days Zawinul played for almost 2 years (1969-1970) with Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, participating in the seminal recordings Miles made at that period.
In 1970 Zawinul formed the legendary Weather ReportFind albums by this artist, which would revolutionize the jazz and fusion genres and continue (in a slightly different direction) the pioneering breakthroughs made by Davis. Over the years Zawinul recorded only three albums as a leader (on AtlanticFind albums on this label and VortexFind albums on this label), two of which are included here (The eponymous album from 1969 was really the starting point for Weather Report). Money In The PocketFind albums with this title, recorded in 1965, finds him in a setting similar to his Adderley’s quintet gig both musically and personally. He uses the quintet’s bass player (Sam JonesFind albums by this artist) and drummer (Louis HayesFind albums by this artist) and adds three excellent horn players: Blue MitchellFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Joe HendersonFind albums by this artist (tenor sax) and Pepper AdamsFind albums by this artist (baritone sax). The sextet plays a great set of bebop material, including mostly original material by Zawinul, Jones and Henderson and two standards. Zawinul’s elegant and soulful piano playing sets a firm basis for the music’s graceful flow.
The Rise & Fall Of The Third StreamFind albums with this title, recorded in 1967, is a completely different album and a most ambitious and pioneering jazz venture for the time. It involves a meeting between the American jazz tradition and the European classical tradition, but as the title suggests it was meant to be a new kind of synthesis to the one attempted earlier in the US by Gunther SchullerFind albums by this artist and named “The Third Stream”, which seemed to be forced and artificial rather than natural. A meeting between Zawinul and American classical composer William FisherFind albums by this artist led to the two of them working together in an attempt to create a natural synthesis of the two musical worlds. The project involved a jazz ensemble and a string quartet, playing music composed and arranged by Fisher. The jazz ensemble includes Zawinul on acoustic and electric piano, Jimmy OwensFind albums by this artist on trumpet, Richard DavisFind albums by this artist on bass, Roy McCurdyFind albums by this artist and Freddie WaitsFind albums by this artist on drums, Warren SmithFind albums by this artist on percussion and Fisher on tenor sax. The result is a stunning piece of music, a completely new and previously attempted kind of musical vista.
In retrospect one can of course hear the seeds of what Zawinul will be doing just a couple of years later with Davis and then Weather Report. Although sadly overlooked and rarely mentioned, this is a seminal album in every respect and surely ahead of its time in every respect. For the intelligent jazz lover, interested in the forces that forged the jazz revolution of the late 1960s this is an absolute must!
