  | NEIL ARDLEY ~ KALEIDOSCOPE OF RAINBOWS DUSK FIRE 101 (Barcode: 5060051330889) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1976 Released: 2005
Composer / arranger / bandleader Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist left a remarkable mark on modern British Jazz in the 1960s and 1970s. As the musical director of the New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. NJOFind albums by this artist), Ardley was responsible for creation of the innovative Big Band / Orchestra sound, one of the great ingredients of modern British Jazz. Influenced by Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, another pioneering figure of Jazz orchestration, Ardley took the matters further, adopting rock elements into his scores and creating unique Jazz-Rock Orchestral music. His skills as a composer of large-scale suite-like scores were best documented by a series of recordings of his works.
This album was a third in a series of such works and a final part of an orchestral trilogy, which started with "The Greek VariationsFind albums with this title" and continued with "A Symphony Of AmaranthsFind albums with this title". As usual in his case, the music is a multi-part orchestral suite, performed by a Jazz ensemble with plenty of space for extended improvisations by soloist. Having at his disposal the burgeoning British Jazz community of musicians, Ardley selected the excellent Ian CarrFind albums by this artist’s NucleusFind albums by this artist as the core of this ensemble, expanding it with additional musicians he was used to work with. The list of players is most impressive and includes among others: Ian Carr on trumpet, Brian SmithFind albums by this artist, Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist and Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist on saxophone, Tony CoeFind albums by this artist on clarinet, Dave MacRaeFind albums by this artist and Geoff CastleFind albums by this artist on piano, Roger SuttonFind albums by this artist on bass and Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist on drums and vibraphone.
The music moves between atmospheric soundscapes and highly rhythmic Jazz-Rock pieces, with excellent solos in each of the suite’s seven parts. In retrospect the music lost none of its original charm and beauty, and sadly one must admit: “they don’t make music like that any more”. Ardley was to produce one more orchestral masterpiece, called "Harmony Of The SpheresFind albums with this title", by the end of the 1970s, before the changing musical and economic climate eradicated ambitious / artistic music almost completely. He became a very successful writer and best-selling author before he died in 2004.
I hope all of his splendid musical works will be properly reissued, including previously unreleased stuff left in his estate. As for this album, just grab a copy and take the A(rdley) train into musical lands of rare beauty – an experience you’ll never forget.

  | GORDON BECK ~ ONCE IS NEVER ENOUGH FMR 028 (Barcode: 786497264025) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1996 Released: 1996
Pianist / composer Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist is one of the icons of the modern British Jazz and his immense contribution to the scene is invaluable. He first came to prominence as a member of the legendary saxophonist Tubby HayesFind albums by this artist quintet and soon after formed his own trio, which was one of the most important ensembles at the time, which recorded some incredibly beautiful albums. Over the years Beck proved to be extremely prolific, recording tens of albums as leader and sidemen and hundreds as a studio musician. A hopeless romantic at heart, his incredibly melodic and lyrical compositions and extraordinary fluency as a player make him one of the finest European Jazz musician. Alongside Michael GarrickFind albums by this artist he is my favorite British piano player and a source of musical joy for over 40 years now. This, one of his latest albums (recorded when Beck was 61 years old!), recorded with two superb British Jazz veterans saxophonist Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist and bassist Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist with a young drummer Paul ClarvisFind albums by this artist, presents him still at the top of his powers both as a composer and a player. He composed four of the seven tunes on this album with Sultzmann contributing the other three. The music is an incredible example of contemporary Jazz, melodic and beautifully structured, but at the same time full of zest, adventure and sophistication. Those listeners, who are familiar with Beck’s output, will find this a worthy addition to his superb body of work. Those who don’t know him might find this album as a gate into an incredible word of high Art of Jazz. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | GEORGIE FAME ~ SEVENTH SON / GOING HOME BGO 700 (Barcode: 5017261207005) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1969 - 1971 Released: 2008
Contrary to what most people know about singer / songwriter / keyboards player Georgie FameFind albums by this artist, his true aspiration was always to sing Jazz. Although he arrived on the British scene in the mid-1960s as a Pop singer, with several singles charting over the years, pretty soon he decided that a Pop idol was the last thing he wanted to be and moved away from the Pop image as fast as he could. By the end of the 1960s Fame was already singing in front of Jazz bands and his self-penned material had a distinctive Jazzy feel.
This album includes two of Fame’s LPs recorded in 1969 and 1971 respectively, both great examples of his great sensitivity and musicality. On Seventh SonFind albums with this title he is supported by a dreamy Jazz band, which includes such illustrious players as Art ThemenFind albums by this artist, Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist (saxophone), Derek WatkinsFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Chris PyneFind albums by this artist (trombone), Brian OdgersFind albums by this artist (bass) and John MarshallFind albums by this artist (drums), who play some outstanding solos. The album was produce by Fame’s friend Alan PriceFind albums by this artist, another Pop star with Jazz inspirations.
On Going HomeFind albums with this title the supporting band is the Keith MansfieldFind albums by this artist orchestra, another quite jazzy outfit, which played for example behind Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist, when he lived and recorded in Britain at the same period. Although perhaps only marginally Jazz, these two albums are a great example of the openness the music industry was willing to extend towards the artists, who wanted to do “their own thing”, something that lasted for a very brief period of time.
Fame’s worm tone and great feel for the music are definitely worth a recollection and this album is a great trip down the memory lane. Probably for people in the autumn years, like myself, but still great fun.

  | GREAT WEE BAND ~ LIGHT BLUE TRIO 589 (Barcode: 5060052775894) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 2011 Released: 2011
This is the second (and last) album by the Great Wee Band quartet co-led by British Jazz trumpeter / composer Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist and guitarist / composer Jim MullenFind albums by this artist, which also included the legendary bassist Dave GreenFind albums by this artist and drummer Stu ButterfieldFind albums by this artist. Saxophonist Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist guests on three tracks. The quartet was founded in 1999, some ten years before their debut studio album was recorded, and released a demo live album in 2002. The album presents eleven tracks, nine of which are standards and one each is an original by Lowther and Mullen.
The music is all mainstream Jazz oriented, with no surprises as to the stylistic direction, obviously played for fun and camaraderie by musicians who know each other for years. This enables the listener to concentrate on hearing the intricacies of the performances by the individual musicians, which are truly delightful. Lowther on trumpet and flugelhorn delivers many outstanding solos, as does Mullen on his guitar, and the rhythm section plays amicably and always exactly on time, as appropriate for the veterans of their statue.
Overall, this is a great opportunity to hear these musicians in an intimate, relaxed and friendly environment, often presenting a lesser known facet of their careers. This is classic mainstream Jazz with a British aftertaste, which is always a charming experience.

  | LONDON TROMBONE QUARTET ~ SOME OF OUR BEST FRIENDS ASC 011 (Barcode: 5029716000239) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1995 Released: 1995
This is the only album by the British Jazz ensemble called London Trombone QuartetFind albums by this artist, which consisted of four trombonists: Pete BeachillFind albums by this artist, Richard EdwardsFind albums by this artist, Mark NightingaleFind albums by this artist and Dave StewartFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded with some top British Jazz musicians active at the time: pianists Pete SabertonFind albums by this artist, John HorlerFind albums by this artist and Dave ArchFind albums by this artist, bassists Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist, Geraint RobertsFind albums by this artist and Laurence CottleFind albums by this artist, drummers Ian ThomasFind albums by this artist and Dave BryantFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist, Pete HurtFind albums by this artist, Andy MacintoshFind albums by this artist, Julian ArguellesFind albums by this artist and Dave O`HigginsFind albums by this artist, guitarists Mike WalkerFind albums by this artist and John ParricelliFind albums by this artist, percussionist Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist, trumpeters Derek WatkinsFind albums by this artist, Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist and Gerard PresencerFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven original compositions by Beachill (3), Sultzmann (2), and one each by Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, Arch, Nightingale, Colin TownsFind albums by this artist, Dick WalterFind albums by this artist and Saberton.
Although Wheeler did not play on this album, one of his tunes was recorded. This is one of Wheeler’s recordings, which remains almost completely obscure and does not appear in most of his discographies. I was very lucky to get it from Kenny’s private collection.
The music is a marvelous example of modern British Jazz, based on excellent original compositions and performed by the crème de la crème of British Jazz musicians active in the 1990s. The trombone quartet was quite a unique ensemble of course and they offered very unique arrangements featuring the trombone at the focus, proving the possibilities of the instrument in the hands of great musicians.
Overall, this is an excellent British Jazz album, performed by first class musicians, which is absolutely worth digging for to discover the splendid music and superb performances by the entire team.

  | JOHN MAYER / INDO-JAZZ FUSIONS ~ SHIVA NATARAJ KING OF DANCE FMR 086 (Barcode: 649849981301) ~ UK ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2001 Released: 2001
British violinist / composer John MayerFind albums by this artist invented the fusion between Jazz and traditional Indian music in the 1960s, when he and the brilliant saxophonist Joe HarriottFind albums by this artist co-led an ensemble, which recorded a series of groundbreaking albums which fused the two musical genres, being one of the pioneers of Jazz-World Fusion. Unfortunately the ensemble ceased to exist when Harriott died tragically in 1973. From that time on Meyer continued his work mainly in the field of Classical music, but by the end of 1990s he formed a new ensemble called Indo-Jazz FusionsFind albums by this artist and recorded with them a series of superb albums until his death in 2004. This album was unfortunately the last he recorded with this ensemble before he died. The lineup is identical to the one, which recorded the beautiful INJAFind albums with this title, and again a British Jazz veteran contributes one of the compositions on this album, this time saxophonist Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist. The music is as beautiful and perfect as anything Mayer ever touched - a great example of Jazz-World Fusion and a must for all lovers of cross-cultural inspirations. Mayer’s fans need no further inducement to grab this one ASAP.

  | JOHN SURMAN / JOHN WARREN ~ TALES OF THE ALGONQUIN VOCALION 8410 (Barcode: 765387841027) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1970 Released: 2005
Canadian born saxophonist / composer John WarrenFind albums by this artist and British Jazz giant John SurmanFind albums by this artist were “soul brothers” in many respects: both played primarily the baritone saxophone, both composed fabulous modern Jazz and both played together on many of the period’s pivotal albums. This joint effort was the culmination of their work together, which remains as one of the greatest European Jazz albums of all times. Warren composed all the music, which includes four shorter pieces and the extended five-part suite, which gives the album its title, all performed by a Big Band, comprising of the creme de la creme of British Jazz musicians at the time. It includes trumpeters Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist, sax players: Mike OsborneFind albums by this artist, Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist, Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, John Surman and John Warren, pianist John TaylorFind albums by this artist, bass players: Harry MillerFind albums by this artist and Barre PhillipsFind albums by this artist and drummers: Alan JacksonFind albums by this artist and Stu MartinFind albums by this artist (and other less known players). The compositions, arrangements, orchestration and performances are all stellar from start to finish and the overall quality of the music is completely outstanding and miles ahead of any competition. It is interesting to compare this album with any Big Band recording made at the same time in America and see that the Brits left their American counterparts aeons behind by that time. I have been harshly criticized many times (by Americans of course) for saying that although Americans invented Jazz, Europeans perfected it. Anybody listening to this album and still not admitting this to be true must be completely deaf. To me this is a perfect album, one of very few that deserves to be called “perfect” in every respect. Beyond essential!

  | DICK WALTER / JAZZCRAFT ENSEMBLE ~ SECRET MOVES ASC 029 (Barcode: 5029716002929) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1998 Released: 1999
This is a wonderful and criminally little known album by the British composer / arranger Dick WalterFind albums by this artist recorded with the Jazzcraft EnsembleFind albums by this artist, a gathering of eleven top British Jazz musicians and five guest stars, which collectively read like the who´s who of British Jazz at the closure of the previous Millennium. The ensemble, conducted by Walter, included trumpeter Derek WatkinsFind albums by this artist, flugelhornist Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist, French horn player Richard BissillFind albums by this artist, valve trombonist Pete BeachillFind albums by this artist, tuba player Oren MarshallFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Phil ToddFind albums by this artist, Steve BuckleyFind albums by this artist and Iain DixonFind albums by this artist, pianist Nikki IlesFind albums by this artist, bassist Chris LaurenceFind albums by this artist and drummer Paul ClarvisFind albums by this artist. The guests were: vocalist Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist, flautist Stan SultzmannFind albums by this artist, baritone saxophonist Alan BarnesFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Anthony KerrFind albums by this artist and finally guitarist John ParricelliFind albums by this artist. The album presents fifteen relatively short pieces, five of which are original compositions by Walter and the rest are carefully selected Jazz standards and one BeatlesFind albums by this artist song, all exquisitely arranged by Walter.
Each and every one of these pieces is an absolute gem, perfectly rounded and complete like a mini-suite, representing all the best in British / European Jazz: delicate aesthetics, superb taste, intelligence and deep understanding of music. This album is one of the most perfect examples of large ensemble Jazz ever recorded and should be a schoolbook example of Jazz arrangement.
The music is also beautifully performed by these Master musicians, who contribute perfect ensemble playing as well as beautiful soli, all relatively concise due to the album´s timing limitations, but nevertheless perfectly rounded and expressive. Altogether these seventy two minutes of music round up almost everything there is to say in a mainstream Jazz ensemble format.
I have no idea how this nugget managed to slip under my radar for so many years; better late than never is the only solace. The music brings so many memories and associations about British Jazz and its history, that listening to it for the first time was a deeply emotional experience for me. Repeated listening sessions revealed the depth of the arrangements and the incredible craft involved in making it. It is a true masterpiece in every respect.
I can hardly imagine a proper British Jazz collection being complete without this album being part of it, and therefore grab a copy as long as it is still available. You can thank me later on, after you have listened to it ;)
