PAUL BUTTERFIELD ~ COMPLETE ALBUMS 1965-1980
RHINO 081227951955 (Barcode: 081227951955) ~ USA ~ Blues-Rock

Recorded: 1965 - 1980 Released: 2015

This wonderful Box Set collects all the albums by American vocalist / harmonica virtuoso / bandleader Paul ButterfieldFind albums by this artist, recorded between 1965 and 1980, which constitute almost his entire recording career. These albums present some of the finest American Blues, Blues-Rock and Jazz-Rock music ever recorded and pay a tribute to one of the finest and most important American Blues Masters, sadly often overlooked. Butterfield´s musical journey can be divided into several periods, all quite different from each other, yet all characterized by total dedication and extraordinary achievements by the leader and his various crews.

The first two albums in this collection, recorded by the Paul Butterfield Blues BandFind albums by this artist, seem to be the most celebrated ones, as they feature the talents of the brilliant guitarist Mike BloomfieldFind albums by this artist, one of the best ever white Blues guitar players in history. Following the departure of Bloomfield the band morphed into a Brass-Rock ensemble, which played Blues influenced Jazz-Rock Fusion material, which was somewhat similar to Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist and ChicagoFind albums by this artist, releasing four more studio albums and one live album under the same moniker.

After Paul Butterfield Blues Band folded, the leader switched to a much smaller ensemble, called Paul Butterfield´s Better DaysFind albums by this artist, which played material closer to the original Blues traditions and recorded two albums, and finally he recorded three solo albums, which were of significant lesser quality. Butterfield died tragically in 1987 from a drug overdose, following his friend Mike Bloomfield who died under similar circumstances in 1981.

Although quite a few live albums appeared on the market after Butterfield´s death, this Box Set includes the only official live album from 1970 (as a 2CD album) and a previously unreleased live album from 1969.

Butterfield´s harmonica playing was completely unique and his treatment of the instrument was completely innovative and unprecedented. He played long, complex, virtuosic solos, which to this day have absolutely no parallels. His ability to collect superb musicians to form his bands was another of his exceptional qualities. The list of the musicians who played on his bands over the years looks like a who´s who of the American Blues and Jazz-Rock, including guitarist Elvin BishopFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Mark NaftalinFind albums by this artist, saxophonist David SanbornFind albums by this artist and dozens of others.

Overall this Box Set is full of absolutely stunning music, which must not be forgotten and is as fresh and powerful as it was at the time it was recorded. Absolutely essential to all Blues lovers, but honestly Jazz-Rock and Brass-Rock fans should have a field day with this chest of treasures. A must!

CHASE ~ CHASE / ENNEA / PURE MUSIC
BGO 842 (Barcode: 5017261208422) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1971 - 1973 Released: 2008

The US Jazz-Rock Fusion ensemble ChaseFind albums by this artist is perhaps the least known among its contemporaries like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist or even FlockFind albums by this artist, but I personally loved them very much and kept them in my memories all these years. It is therefore a joyful occasion to see their complete recording legacy being reissued and available again.

Led by brilliant trumpeter Bill ChaseFind albums by this artist, who came to fame as the lead trumpet in Woody HermanFind albums by this artist´s HerdFind albums by this artist, known to deliver some of the strongest high notes ever played on this instrument, and who also played with other orchestras led by such famous leaders like Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist and Stan KentonFind albums by this artist. By the late 1960s Bill Chase became somewhat bored by playing Big Band scores and decided to plunge full steam ahead into the invigorating world of Jazz-Rock Fusion. He collected a group of young but highly experienced young players, who shared his vision, creating the nine-piece band Chase.

Signed with EpicFind albums on this label, the band recorded 3 brilliant albums, included here, before Bill Chase and three other members of the band tragically perished in a plane crash, putting an end to one of the most promising bands of the time. Chase included a four-trumpet front line, backed by a rocky rhythm section (keyboards, guitar, bass & drums) and a lead singer (Terry RichardsFind albums by this artist, who has a voice quite similar to David Clayton-ThomasFind albums by this artist). This unique lineup brings together the better of the two worlds – Jazz and Rock – creating a superb mixture, which only very few contenders seemed to possess. Most of the material is composed by Bill Chase, with a few classic songs getting a fresh arrangement.

All three albums are equally brilliant, with the last one being the most mature and richly orchestrated, with expanded improvised solos and mostly instrumental. Bill Chase delivers several of his high-pitched solos, which leave the listener completely breathless. All in all listening to these albums in a row is an exhilarating experience, hitting right where it counts! This music aged extremely well and today, some 35 years after it was recorded, is still some of the best stuff you can let into your ears – absolutely essential!

CHICAGO ~ AT CARNEGIE HALL (IV)
RHINO 76174 ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

4th album (recorded 1971), and the first live recording. After releasing 3 consecuitive double LPs Chicago astounded the music world with the release of this 4 LPs set - the first ever in Rock. The beautiful packaging and the enclosed goodies (photos & posters) made this one of the most memorable albums in the history of Rock. The music includes selections from the 3 first albums, as well as new tunes performed here for the first time. The recording quality is simply breathtaking, especially in view of the fact that Carnegie Hall was built and designed for acoustic (mostly classical) music. Also the ability of the band to perform live the complex and lengthy compositions is truly amazing. This is undoubtedly one of the most important live albums ever recorded and this expanded reissue, which includes a whole CD worth of bonus material is a treasure not to be missed.

CHICAGO ~ CHICAGO (II)
RHINO 76172 (Barcode: 081227617226) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2002

2nd album by ChicagoFind albums by this artist and the first under the shortened name from Chicago Transit AuthorityFind albums by this artist. Another double LP, second in the row, and even stronger then the debut, as the group gained some studio experience and managed to write some terrific new material. Most of the music, although split on the album into individual tracks, was in fact long thematic suites. The performances are flawless and inspiring, the vocals strong and expressive, the music intelligent and moving - what else can one wish for? Absolutely essential!

CHICAGO ~ CHICAGO III
RHINO 76173 (Barcode: 081227617325) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2002

3rd album by ChicagoFind albums by this artist. Yet another double LP (3rd in a row, but alas the last) and more brilliant music, similar in style and structure to the previous efforts. Most of the material consists of three extended suites, each one different in style, giving ample opportunity for extended solos and interplay. It is truly amazing how the group managed to sustain such a high level of composing and playing, such volume of music, all this in a short span of time. Essential!

CHICAGO ~ CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY
RHINO 76171 (Barcode: 081227617127) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2002

1st album by ChicagoFind albums by this artist. A revolutionary Jazz-Rock epic (originally a double LP) similar to the work done by Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, but more rock based. The quality of the material as well as the level of musicianship is astounding for a group of young players recording their debut album and with no studio experience whatsoever. The work of the group`s guitar player - Terry KathFind albums by this artist - is much in the forefront and deserves all possible prise. They took the rock world like a storm and a series of strong consecutive releases for over 30 years ensured their monumental status for posterity. Essential!

CHICAGO ~ CHICAGO V (EXPANDED EDITION)
RHINO 76175 (Barcode: 081227617523) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1972 Released: 2002

5th album by ChicagoFind albums by this artist. This is a first single LP they recorded, but although it contains less material, the quality remains incredibly high. As usual, several band mebers contribute their compositions, each one quite different, but all superb. In a sense this is the most advanturous Chicago album and the most progressive one, with obvious attention to albums released by other groups at the time. Another milestone.

RHINO 76176 (Barcode: 081227617622) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2002

6th album by ChicagoFind albums by this artist. It marks for the first time some changes in the group`s musical approach. Guest musicians were invited to participate on the album and the meterial consists of shorter and more concise tunes, some of which are definitely less advanturous then their traditional (so far) material. Nevertheless this is still a great band at work and this album has a lot of gems in it, worthy of repeated listening.

CHICAGO ~ CHICAGO XXXVI NOW
FRONTIERS 652 (Barcode: 8024391065228) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 2013 - 2014 Released: 2014

This is the 24th studio and 36th overall album by the iconic American Brass Rock group ChicagoFind albums by this artist. It is the first album of original songs by the group since “Chicago XXXFind albums with this title” released in 2006. The lineup of the group includes founding numbers: keyboardist Robert LammFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Lee LoughnaneFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Walter ParazaiderFind albums by this artist and trombonist James PankowFind albums by this artist and members who joined the group over the years: bassist Jason ScheffFind albums by this artist, guitarist Keith HowlandFind albums by this artist, drummer Tris ImbodenFind albums by this artist, vocalist / keyboardist Lou PardiniFind albums by this artist and percussionist Walfredo Reyes, Jr.Find albums by this artist, and a host of guest musicians appear on selected tracks. The album presents eleven songs, all written by the group’s members.

Musically the group returns to the hey days of their career, faithfully reproducing the Brass Rock sound that the group co-created and played from day one, and most importantly the album proves that they are still able to write excellent songs and wonderful instrumental arrangements.

Considering the fact that contemporary Pop / Rock has almost completely nothing to offer, going back to the sources seem to be the only logical way to be taken in order to produce worthwhile, coherent, interesting and artistically challenging new material.

Yes, there is nothing innovative or groundbreaking here, but that is the fate of music since decades now, so at least we are able to hear new material, that follows some of the best standards achieved decades ago, and there is nothing to be ashamed off about it.

Overall, this is an excellent album, which is a pleasure to listen to from start to finish, full of great songs and superb performances, tight, professional and well recorded. I’d take this any time before wasting time on the sonic garbage that surrounds us from so called Pop / Rock “artists” these days. Brilliant stuff!

CHICAGO ~ CHICAGO XXXVII CHICAGO CHRISTMAS (2019)
RHINO 603497849758 (Barcode: 603497849758) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 2019 Released: 2019

This is the twenty-fifth studio album by the legendary American group ChicagoFind albums by this artist, now in their sixth decade of continuous activity. It is the first studio album since “Chicago XXXVI NowFind albums with this title” from 2014. The album presents ten (one in two versions) songs, seven of which are new original songs by the band members and only three are standard Xmas songs in new arrangements.

Three founding members of the group: keyboardist Robert LammFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Lee LoughnaneFind albums by this artist and trombonist James PankowFind albums by this artist are still part of the lineup and between them wrote most of the songs on the album.

The music remains within the established Brass-Rock idiom, with brilliant melodies and excellent brass arrangements, which have faithfully carried the group through their lengthy career, which knew some ups and downs, but in retrospect can be seen as one of the most spectacular in American Rock. The fact that this album includes primarily new original Xmas songs testifies to the longevity and continuous creative power Chicago are able to kindle.

Overall, this is a brilliant Rock album, steady as a rock (he he) and full of brilliant music and excellent musicianship. They don’t make music like this anymore and this album, being an exception, is a perfect proof of that statement. For many Chicago’s faithful followers, this is just what the doctor prescribed. Of course it can be listened to all year round, Xmas or not!

CHICAGO ~ JOHN F. KENNEDY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, WASHINGTON D.C., 9/16/1971
RHINO 603497834174 (Barcode: 603497834174) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2024

This is an archival live album by the seminal American Brass Rock band ChicagoFind albums by this artist, recorded on September 16, 1971. The material is all previously unissued, except for one track. It is the second live album recorded the same year, after the “At Carnegie HallFind albums with this title” (or “Chicago IVFind albums with this title”) live album, recorded in April that year. It was recorded shortly before the band recorded their 4th studio album “Chicago VFind albums with this title”, and includes some early versions of material included on that album. The 3CD album presents twenty-six tracks, which span the band’s output released on their first three studio double albums. All the material (except one song) is original and was written and arranged by the group members.

The group’s original septet lineup, with guitarist Terry KathFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Robert LammFind albums by this artist, bassist Peter CeteraFind albums by this artist, drummer Danny SeraphineFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Lee LoughnaneFind albums by this artist, trombonist James PankowFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Walter ParazaiderFind albums by this artist, was one of the most versatile, talented and perfectly synchronized music ensembles ever. They defined the Brass Rock idiom completely and perfectly and no other ensemble managed to create as much creative music over the years. They were also superb instrumentalists, composers and arrangers, which set them apart from other Brass Rock manifestations. Of course Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist were also awesome, but they were completely different stylistically and conceptually, although definitely Brass Rock related as well. As usual, Kath’s incredible guitar technique and inventiveness stand out and he remains as one of the greatest guitar Masters in all time, sadly rather anonymous to most contemporary music listeners.

An immediate instinctive comparison between this album and the “At Carnegie Hall” album comes up, but in fact it does not make sense for many reasons. This album is a straight-ahead document of one concert in its entirety, whereas the gigantic “At Carnegie Hall” was compiled from a series of eight concerts (released in its entirety as a 16CD set only in 2021). This album was recorded for documentation purposes and not for a formal release. In short a comparison is unnecessary and this album, despite the fact that the sound quality is a bit murky, is by all means a superb piece of music and an important historical document of an era and a musical genre almost extinct today.

Overall, this is a brilliant snapshot of the essential Brass Rock ensemble Chicago at its musical peak, with almost three hours of Godly music, which no true music fan should miss. This is a true musical feast for my ears!

This is a live album by the seminal American Brass Rock band ChicagoFind albums by this artist, recorded in November 2024, celebrating the 55th Anniversary of the release of the legendary debut album by the band in 1969. The 2CD album presents thirty-one tracks, which span the band’s output created over the years, including all the memorable material.

Only three founding members of the group: keyboardist Robert LammFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Lee LoughnaneFind albums by this artist and trombonist James PankowFind albums by this artist are still part of the current band’s lineup, which includes newer members as well as a huge cast of guest musicians, including guitarists Steve VaiFind albums by this artist, Robert RandolphFind albums by this artist, Chris DaughtryFind albums by this artist and others. Although some of the new arrangements and the guest appearances sound often a bit schmaltzy, parts of the magic are still there and the music is of course timeless.

Chicago defined the Brass Rock idiom completely and perfectly and no other ensemble managed to create as much creative music over the years. They were also superb instrumentalists, composers and arrangers, which set them apart from other Brass Rock manifestations. Of course Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist were also awesome, but they were completely different stylistically and conceptually, although definitely Brass Rock related as well.

Overall, this is a retrospective snapshot of the essential Brass Rock ensemble, somewhat spoiled by contemporary American kitsch, but with over two hours of Godly music, this is definitely worth listening to, and shedding a tear in memory of the great times.

CHICAGO ~ THE 1969 TORONTO CONCERT
WETON-WESGRAM 064 (Barcode: 8717423052029) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2007

This is a “semi-official” archival live album by the iconic American Brass Rock band ChicagoFind albums by this artist, recorded at the peak of their early period following the release of their debut album. The music was recorded at the Toronto Rock `N` Roll Revival 1969 on September 13, 1969. The recording was first released on cassette in 1978 and subsequently bootlegged countless times, with different album titles, song titles and songs order.

The original material included seven songs from the debut album and one song from the second album, which was not released yet at the time. The sound quality is pretty bad, but listenable, and considering how precious every bit of Chicago’s early music is, everything is forgiven.

The music presents the admirable energy and zest of Chicago at the time, which had a hurricane effect. Guitarist Terry KathFind albums by this artist is featured extensively and his performances are absolutely stunning, proving again that he was a one of a king musician, beyond comparison to anybody else since his time.

Overall, despite the fact that this is a bootleg and the quality of sound is far from ideal, the material is absolutely stellar and every second of this music is pure musical gold. As such, this is essential to all Chicago fans and Brass Rock lovers, as it does not get better ever since – over five decades ago – mind you!

CHICAGO ~ THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1969-1978
RHINO 081227969585 (Barcode: 081227969585) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1969 - 1978 Released: 2012

This excellent Box Set includes the remastered / expanded versions of the first ten studio albums by the iconic American ensemble ChicagoFind albums by this artist, which defined the American variation of the Brass Rock genre, together with other ensembles like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, DreamsFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist, FlockFind albums by this artist and many other less renowned music makers. Chicago were, in retrospect, the most prolific and enduring of them all and are undoubtedly an American Rock legend. They managed to combine incredible songwriting abilities, which resulted in their songs charting, despite the fact that they were hardy chart material, incredible instrumental abilities, superb vocalists and arrangement skills, which amalgamated Jazz, Blues, Rock and Pop, producing a unique sound, which managed to stay relevant despite the fads and fashions of the ever changing music scene.

The ten CDs in this box include the first three double albums: “Chicago Transit AuthorityFind albums with this title”, “Chicago (II)Find albums with this title” and “Chicago IIIFind albums with this title” as well as seven single albums: “Chicago VFind albums with this title”, “Chicago VIFind albums with this title”, “Chicago VIIFind albums with this title”, “Chicago VIIIFind albums with this title”, “Chicago XFind albums with this title”, “Chicago XIFind albums with this title” and finally “Hot StreetsFind albums with this title” (a.k.a. “Chicago XIIFind albums with this title”). Not included in the Box Set are “Chicago IVFind albums with this title”, which was a live album and “Chicago IXFind albums with this title”, which was a Greatest Hits compilation.

All the albums, except the last one, were recorded by a steady lineup, which of course helped to establish a polished style and superb interplay. The lineup included bassist Peter CeteraFind albums by this artist, guitarist Terry KathFind albums by this artist (who died tragically in early 1978), keyboardist Robert LammFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Lee LoughnaneFind albums by this artist, trombonist James PankowFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Walter ParaziderFind albums by this artist and drummer Danny SeraphineFind albums by this artist. Percussionist Laudir de OlivieraFind albums by this artist joined the group in 1973.

Overall, this Box Set is an unbelievable treasure chest of incredible music and a Bible of American Brass Rock. It features some of the greatest American Rock guitar playing by the hands of Terry Kath, many of the sublimely composed early suites, which can easily be considered as Progressive Rock masterpieces, and simply superb music in general, from start to finish. The remasters improved the sound of the original albums, but the bonus tracks are quite insignificant. No serious music collection can afford not to include this Box Set, even if one owns all the individual albums already. Absolutely essential!

Although these new editions often bring back to life some of the best music ever made on this planet, which in many cases has been lost in the tides of time and was unavailable on the market for ages, they suffer from an unforgivable disregard for the essence of cultural values and general sloppiness, contrary to human decency, which requires as to treat our Cultural Legacy with respect and loyalty.

The Box Sets produced under these monikers have no discographical information whatsoever about the lineups, musician names, composers, lyricists, dates and places of recording, original release data and even basic copyright data (the last is strictly illegal BTW). Although the original LP sleeves are reproduced, they are often edited and information (which would be in most cases too small to be readable) is removed. Most importantly these Box Sets don't include any booklet offering a historical background and perspective about the Artists and the Music, which are extremely important and vital to the preservation of our Culture and passing the knowledge to the next generations.

In short the fact that these Box Sets are meant to be inexpensive, does not mean that they have to be cheap. Considering the fact how many times this music has been sold over and over again by the labels, this is a crying shame!

Contrary to popular opinion I totally reject the accusation that Chicago completely lost their initial impact. The fact is that they still produce brilliant music, which gradually went through many changes, as did the entire music scene, but never lost their ability to write superb tunes and play with guts and gusto. The ten albums in this Box Set offer some incredible music and continue the Brass Rock tradition proudly, albeit in many different ways.

CHICAGO ~ VI DECADES LIVE (THIS IS WHAT WE DO)
RHINO 081227932336 (Barcode: 081227932336) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1969 - 2014 Released: 2018

This is an archival collection of live performances by the legendary American Brass Rock band ChicagoFind albums by this artist, and a founding member of the genre. The Box Set includes four CDs and a DVD, which span, as the title suggests, six decades of this seminal band, with the earliest recording captured in 1969 and the latest in 2014. The Box Set is lavishly packaged in a book format and includes a book with wonderful photographs and other memorabilia.

CD1 and CD2 present the full set of Chicago’s 1970 performance at the Isle of White Festival. CD3 presents performance from France, USA and Australia captured between 1969 and 1977. CD4 presents USA performances captured between 1978 and 2014. The DVD presents the German TV show Rockpalast concert from 1977 and one bonus video track from 1973.

Obviously the first two CDs offer the most important material, with the band at their strongest ever (original) lineup, following the release of the first two (double) albums and just before the release of their third (also double) album. The compositions and the performances are absolutely marvelous and consists of some of the best Brass Rock music ever recorded.

The other two CDs present later lineups of the group, which despite passing time managed to maintain an excellent level of music, perhaps less ambitious and complex than in the extraordinary initial period, but still coherent stylistically and way above what was happening in music as time passed.

Chicago managed to overcome the tragic death of their founding member, guitarist Terry KathFind albums by this artist in 1978 and lineup changes and continued as a group, despite the changing musical trends and fads.

Overall this is a fabulous addition to the Chicago recorded legacy, which no fan of the group would like to miss in their collection, with the first two CDs worth they weight in gold!

CHICAGO ~ WHAT`S IT GONNA BE, SANTA?
RHINO 081227389222 (Barcode: 081227389222) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1998 - 2003 Released: 2003

This is a reissue / expanded edition of the nineteenth studio album by the legendary American group ChicagoFind albums by this artist, originally released in 1998 as “Chicago XXV The Christmas AlbumFind albums with this title”, which included the band’s interpretations of Xmas classics with just one original song. This reissue from 2003 adds six additional songs and the entire album is resequenced.

Four founding members of the group: keyboardist Robert LammFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Lee LoughnaneFind albums by this artist, trombonist James PankowFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Walter ParazaiderFind albums by this artist are still part of the lineup and between them wrote most of the arrangements on the album.

The music remains within the established Brass-Rock idiom, with excellent brass arrangements, which have faithfully carried the group through their lengthy career, which knew some ups and downs, but in retrospect can be seen as one of the most spectacular in American Rock.

Overall, this is an excellent album, full of brilliant music and excellent musicianship. They don’t make music like this anymore and despite the fact that this is Xmas music, the Rock spirit of it remains unchanged. For many Chicago’s faithful followers, this is just what the doctor prescribed. Of course it can be listened to all year round, Xmas or not! Since the Xmas albums are not included in the two studio albums Box Sets, they are worth having separately in every serious Chicago collection.

CHICAGO EDGE ENSEMBLE ~ DECAYING ORBIT
NOT ON LABEL ~ USA ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2017

This is the debut album by American (from Chicago) quintet called Chicago Edge EnsembleFind albums by this artist, which comprises of saxophonist Mars WilliamsFind albums by this artist, trombonist Jeb BishopFind albums by this artist, guitarist Dan PhillipsFind albums by this artist, Polish (resident in US) bassist Krzysztof PabianFind albums by this artist and drummer Hamid DrakeFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven original compositions, all by Phillips, who is the leader of the ensemble.

In contrast to the music Phillips creates with his trio, which is original and interesting, the music presented here is mostly typical American Free Jazz, which did not change much in the last fifty years since its inception. Each of the tracks is based on a sketchy melodic riff, which is than expanded into lengthy improvisations performed by the three front players and supported by the rhythm section, which swings at times and plays free time at others. The ensemble sounds at its best when the music becomes more Fusion oriented, with a strong Rocky pulse and Phillips´ scorching guitar in the lead, but these moments are relatively rare. The music moves between organized passages, with clearly defined roles as far as the players are concerned, and completely Free parts, which are less impressive.

All these musicians are excellent instrumentalist and play formidable solo parts, especially Phillips, whose guitar manages to be searching and expressive. Pabian plays beautifully and his pulsations keep the music together, especially in view of the challenging, but of course excellent drumming by Drake. The trombone and saxophone parts are technically impressive, but offer nothing that was not heard in Free Jazz time and again before.

Overall this is a very solid offer by an excellent ensemble, especially for Free Jazz connoisseurs, but is also accessible to a broader audience since the Free elements are relatively tame and the album also offers quite a few Fusion oriented vistas. Definitely worth investigation!

CHICAGO EDGE ENSEMBLE ~ INSIDIOUS ANTHEM
TROST 177 (Barcode: 9120036682733) ~ USA ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2018

This is the second album by the American Jazz quintet Chicago Edge EnsembleFind albums by this artist, led by guitarist / composer Dan PhillipsFind albums by this artist, which also includes trombonist Jeb BishopFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Mars WilliamsFind albums by this artist, Polish (based in US) bassist Krzysztof PabianFind albums by this artist and drummer Hamid DrakeFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, all by Phillips.

In contrast to the debut album, the music on this album is much more organized, with clearly composed themes, which are pushed forward and directed by the leader, and then stretched into lengthy improvised passages, backed by a swinging rhythm section. As such this music is closer to contemporary modern Jazz, which includes freely improvised parts, but is focused in coherent more often than not.

All five instrumentalists are obviously very experienced and talented, which contributes to the superb level of execution felt all the way through. Phillips, who uses a scorching Fusion oriented sound, is the most unique voice of the quintet, although Bishop and Williams contribute hot and inspiring parts as well. Pabian is a very distinctive bassist, perfectly balancing the rhythmic pulsations with the harmonic support he offers to the soloists. Drake is a Master drummer, who is well beyond the need to prove anything and his versatile rhythmic support is beyond reproach.

Overall the album offers some very exciting modern Jazz, which offers an elegant balance between melody and Freedom, with the music swinging splendidly from start to finish. With first class musicianship and great compositions, the album is real pleasure to listen to and deserves repeated spins to get all the hidden complexities, which are revealed only after careful and attentive listening. Personally I believe this is a much better offering than the debut, which already makes me curious as to their next offer. Well done Gentlemen!

DREAMS ~ DREAMS / IMAGINE MY SURPRISE
BGO 0940 (Barcode: 5017261209405) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2010

The fantastic US Jazz-Rock ensemble DreamsFind albums by this artist, which unfortunately recorded only two albums, both included here, was one of the best examples of the American branch of Brass-Rock, a relatively short-lived sub genre of Jazz-Rock, which also included such superb ensembles like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist and a few others. Dreams originated in NY and had a somewhat flexible lineup of associated musicians, but the importance of these two albums is mainly due to the fact that they provided a debut recording opportunity to some of the genre´s most iconic figures: brothers -Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist (saxophone) and Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist (trumpet) - and drummer Billy CobhamFind albums by this artist. Other Dreams members were already established figures on the scene, like bassist Doug LubahnFind albums by this artist (DoorsFind albums by this artist), guitarist John AbercrombieFind albums by this artist and keyboardist Don GrolnickFind albums by this artist. Other group members were keyboardist / guitarist Jeff KentFind albums by this artist, trombonist Barry RogersFind albums by this artist, vocalist Edward VernonFind albums by this artist, bassist Will LeeFind albums by this artist and guitarist / trumpeter Bob MannFind albums by this artist. Musically the group mixed genres freely, with Jazz, Funk, Rock and Soul adopted at will and beautifully arranged to create some of the most memorable sounds of the period. The music is just perfect; although spontaneous and improvised, every note is just exactly where it belongs, every drum beat precisely on time, every phrase brilliantly placed, every tempo change and every instrumental solo and above all the overall interplay are just what a music fun needs – pure genius. It is hard to believe that a bunch of young musician was capable of producing such magnificent music, but then on the other hand considering that Dreams seeded Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, Brecker BrothersFind albums by this artist and many other heroes of the Jazz and Fusion scene, perhaps one should not wonder. I own both these albums since the day they were released and have listened to them repeatedly over the years, always enjoying myself immensely and it was me who suggested to BGOFind albums on this label to reissue them – I´m glad they did! Now many more potential listeners have the opportunity to hear them as well – enjoy as this is essential stuff!

EARTH, WIND & FIRE ~ THE COLUMBIA MASTERS
SONY 886978946928 (Barcode: 886978946928) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1972 - 1990 Released: 2011

American ensemble Earth, Wind & FireFind albums by this artist epitomizes the best in American popular music in the 1970s and 1980s, especially the music made by Afro-American musicians in these two decades. Following the two revolutionary decades (1950s and 1960s), during which Afro-Americans invented Rock And Roll and Soul, they moved now into Funk, which usually also included some Jazz elements. None of the ensembles active in the 1970s and 1980s came close to Earth, Wind & Fire in creating such an eloquent and aesthetically perfect collection of music, which amalgamated Pop, Rock, Soul, Funk and Jazz, like nobody else.

Founded in 1969 by vocalist / drummer / songwriter Maurice WhiteFind albums by this artist, the band released a couple of albums on Warner Bros.Find albums on this label, before moving to ColumbiaFind albums on this label, where the impressive body of 15 albums was released between 1972 and 1990. The music combined superb vocal harmonies with a funky rhythm section and a sublime brass section, which sounded as good as Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist and ChicagoFind albums by this artist at their best. The band enjoyed enormous commercial success, which didn´t damage their musical integrity one bit, which is quite exceptional and of course commendable.

This beautiful Box Set includes all the albums the band released on Columbia and an additional CD of bonus material. Together this is a massive collection of timeless music, which only gets better with time. This is a perfect match of fun and honest musical achievement, which can be combined, as this music proves beyond a shadow of a doubt. A major piece of music history, which would make any serious record collection proud!

MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ M. F. HORN / M. F. HORN 2 / M. F. HORN 3
BGO 1110 (Barcode: 5017261211101) ~ CANADA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1970 - 1973 Released: 2013

This is a reissue of three albums by Canadian Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist. These are the second, fourth and fifth albums Ferguson recorded for CBSFind albums on this label in UK after he signed with the label in late 1968, following his move to the UK from India. The first two albums were produced by the brilliant arranger / conductor Keith MansfieldFind albums by this artist, who worked with Ferguson on all his UK recordings except the last, i.e. the third album included here, which was produced by Teo MaceroFind albums by this artist and which was mostly recorded in UK and had some minor touches added later in the US. "M. F. HornFind albums with this title" was released as "The World Of Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title" in the US.

Upon his arrival in UK Ferguson made a dramatic shift in his approach to the Big Band Jazz he played for so many years previously. Influenced by what was happening in music at the time, especially the birth of Jazz-Rock Fusion, and the Brass Rock ensembles like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist, FlockFind albums by this artist and many others, he was determined to pursue this new direction as well. Obviously the British scene was a highly fertile ground, with many British Jazz musicians already very much involved in that idiom. The "M. F. Horn" series of albums reflects that glorious period perfectly!

The first two "M. F. Horn" albums and the album "Alive & Well In LondonFind albums with this title" (released as "Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title" in the US), which was "sandwiched" between them, follow a similar formula of presenting a mixture of wonderful arrangements of popular songs and original compositions, arranged by Mansfield, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, Adrian DroverFind albums by this artist and John CameronFind albums by this artist and performed by a dreamy band that features such luminaries as trombonists Chris PyneFind albums by this artist and Derek WadsworthFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Pete KingFind albums by this artist and Brian SmithFind albums by this artist, pianist Pete JacksonFind albums by this artist, percussionist Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist and other top British Jazz players at the time.

"M. F. Horn 3Find albums with this title" is somewhat different in the choice of material, as it does not include covers of popular material but includes soundtracks, Jazz standards and no less than three original compositions by pianist Pete Jackson. It is generally considered as the Jazziest album of the "M. F. Horn" series, probably due to the fact that Macero produced it, but in retrospect it is undoubtedly an integral part of the same musical direction and spirit.

Overall these albums are great piece of the Ferguson´s recorded legacy, which is certainly worth being remembered. The magic Brass Rock / British Big Band period is certainly a pinnacle of his creativity, and a superb addition to the idiom, which has a lasting value and deserves an honorable place in any serious music collection. An absolute must!

MAYNARD FERGUSON ~ THE BALLAD STYLE OF MAYNARD FERGUSON / ALIVE & WELL IN LONDON
BGO 1206 (Barcode: 5017261212061) ~ CANADA ~ Brass Rock

This is a reissue of two albums by Canadian Jazz trumpeter / composer / bandleader Maynard FergusonFind albums by this artist. These are the first and third albums Ferguson recorded for CBSFind albums on this label in UK after he signed with the label in late 1968, following his move to the UK from India. Both albums were produced by the brilliant arranger / conductor Keith MansfieldFind albums by this artist, who worked with Ferguson on all his UK recordings.

Upon his arrival in UK Ferguson made a dramatic shift in his approach to the Big Band Jazz he played for so many years previously. Obviously the British scene was a highly fertile ground, with many British Jazz musicians already very much involved in that idiom.

However his ambitions had to be postponed for a while, due to the fact that CBS was mostly a Pop / MOR repertoire oriented label and wanted, at least until the label heads could be persuaded otherwise, start Ferguson´s CBS stretch with a much more commercial recording, which resulted in the recording of "The Ballad Style Of Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title". The material consisted of eleven arrangements of well known movie themes and other popular songs, but in the capable hands of Mansfield and his superb orchestra, which included some of the best British Jazz musicians at the time, and of course Ferguson´s fabulous trumpet playing characterized by the piercing high notes, the album, although certainly widely appealing, remains a masterpiece of Jazz flavored popular orchestral music.

"Alive & Well In LondonFind albums with this title" (a.k.a. "Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title") is a completely different story. It followed the recording of the second album for CBS entitled "M. F. HornFind albums with this title" (a.k.a. "The World Of Maynard FergusonFind albums with this title"), which gave a birth to a series of "M. F. Horn" albums, and which opened a new chapter in Ferguson´s recording legacy, which find him playing a soaring Jazz-Rock / Brass Rock arrangements of popular songs and original material by the members of the orchestra.

This album includes eleven popular songs, arranged by Mansfield, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, Adrian DroverFind albums by this artist and John CameronFind albums by this artist and performed by a dreamy band that features such luminaries as trombonist Chris PyneFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Pete KingFind albums by this artist and Brian SmithFind albums by this artist, pianist Pete JacksonFind albums by this artist, percussionist Frank RicottiFind albums by this artist and others.

FLOCK ~ FLOCK ROCK – THE BEST OF THE FLOCK
BGO 838 (Barcode: 5017261208385) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1969 - 1970 Released: 2008

First a very important explanation why a "Best Of…" album would be considered at all to be placed on my site, as my loathing of the very idea of a "Best Of…" album is commonly known. Well the album´s title is somewhat confusing; the CD does include some of the material included on the first two original FlockFind albums by this artist albums: the eponymous debut and "Dinosaur SwampsFind albums with this title", but the "real" sensation is the inclusion of previously unreleased material recorded by the group for their third Columbia album, entitled "Flock RockFind albums with this title", which was abandoned after being rejected by the label. They are all here – superb instrumental pieces, which show the direction the group wanted to take and of course a most valuable addition to the group´s limited recorded output. Led by violinist Jerry GoodmanFind albums by this artist, Flock were definitely one of the most interesting Jazz-Rock Fusion ensembles at the time and alongside Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist and ChaseFind albums by this artist revolutionized music as we know it. People who already own the two albums will get this for the bonus material and those who don´t, have now a splendid opportunity to get exposed to some of the best Fusion ever recorded!

HEAVEN ~ BRASS ROCK 1
ESOTERIC 2030 (Barcode: 5013929713024) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2008

Only album recorded by the obscure British Jazz-Rock ensemble HeavenFind albums by this artist, which existed for a brief period of time managing several festival appearances and recording of this splendid album before they disbanded. The group was a nonet with a lead singer, rhythm section and a five piece brass section, which made them one of the first full-scale Brass-Rock ensembles in UK, expanding the format of US bands like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist and ChicagoFind albums by this artist. The material is typical Brass-Rock of the period, with strong melody lines and complex brass arrangements, guitar solos on top brass vamping and strong throaty vocals. It´s pretty amazing that this album is rarely mentioned as a classic of the Brass-Rock sub-genre, as it truly excellent in every respect. Hopefully this reissue will bring it out to the open and help in achieving the proper recognition. An absolute must for every Brass-Rock and Jazz-Rock fan!

IDES OF MARCH ~ FRIENDLY STRANGERS: THE WARNER BROS. RECORDINGS
WOUNDED BIRD 6007 (Barcode: 664140600720) ~ USA ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1969 - 1971 Released: 2018

This is a remastered / expanded reissue of the entire material recorded by the American Rock / Brass Rock band Ides Of MarchFind albums by this artist, which includes their first two albums “VehicleFind albums with this title” and “Common BondFind albums with this title” and numerous singles released on Warner Bros.Find albums on this label Records. Fronted by a charismatic vocalist / songwriter Jim PeterikFind albums by this artist, who wrote most of the band’s material, the band included a brass section, which gave them the Brass Rock sound. Some of the material uses orchestral arrangements. Following the first two albums, Ides Of March released two additional albums on RCAFind albums on this label and disbanded in 1973, but reunited in 1990 and are still active today.

The music is a mixture of Pop, Rock and Brass Rock, with truly excellent songs by Peterik, who has the ability to weave wonderfully melodic songs, often more ambitious than the usual Pop material, especially when arranged with extended Brass Rock attires. Although rarely mentioned today, these two early albums are a wonderful reminder of the incredible level of American musicianship at time.

Fans of early ChicagoFind albums by this artist and Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist albums should really enjoy this music, in all its splendor, which is completely absent on contemporary music scene.

Overall, this is a wonderful reminder of how American Rock music sounded by the late 1960s / early 1970s, with Brass Rock being one of its most ambitious manifestations. Since Brass Rock recordings are relatively uncommon, this reissue is definitely a splendid opportunity to revive an interest in the genre’s history. Wholeheartedly recommended!

IF ~ IF
REPERTOIRE 1037 (Barcode: 4009910103722) ~ UK ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2006

Thi is the debut album by the superb British Jazz-Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist, formed in 1969 by three representatives of the burgeoning British Jazz scene, which was experiencing an unprecedented surge of creativity and revolutionizing the Jazz form at the time. Although partly inspired by American Jazz-Rock pioneers like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist and ChicagoFind albums by this artist, which were gaining wide popularity at the time, If was quintessentially different from its American counterparts.

Essentially Jazz-Rock was "invented" in Britain several years earlier by musicians like Graham BondFind albums by this artist and others, creating a distinctive "sound and feel", which was quite different from the development of the genre on the other side of the pond. The Americans based their bands on the rich "brass" tradition, which was perfected over the years by countless Big Bands and Brass bands, adding an aggressive rock backbeat to the music, whereas the British used a different approach, which basically left the Jazz environment intact, rejuvenating it with modern rhythmic approach and electric instruments (and in some cases adding Rock vocals), but remaining faithful to the Jazz idiom. In short where the American Jazz-Rock mainly rocked, the British Jazz-Rock mainly swung.

If were a great example of these differences and although short-lived, the band produced some of the most exquisite examples of British Jazz-Rock ever recorded. The core of the band comprised of the extraordinary guitarist Terry SmithFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist and another saxophonist / flautist Dave QuincyFind albums by this artist (please note the absence of trumpeters). All three musicians had behind them several years of playing Jazz in various ensembles and were amongst the most gifted young British players at the time. Supported by a great and versatile rhythm section: keyboardist John MealingFind albums by this artist, bassist Jim RichardsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Dennis ElliottFind albums by this artist and fronted by unusually gifted and able vocalist J.W. HodkinsonFind albums by this artist, If were an absolutely perfect combination of talent and abilities, which actually worked. This, combined with the abilities of the "in house" composers (mostly Morrissey and Quincy), who crafted incredible melodies; crispy, complex and intelligent yet "easy" on the ear, made If a lean and mean music making machine of staggering proportions. All three main instrumental soloist were wonderful musicians, which is evident on this album from start to finish, but the most incredible work was surely performed by guitarist Terry Smith, who uses every trick in the book and beyond, always fresh and unconventional.

It is most interesting to compare Smith´s work with Chicago guitarist Terry KathFind albums by this artist (what a coincidence – both named Terry), who also was the most gifted instrumentalist in his band. Smith´s adaptation of Jazz guitar techniques into Rock as opposed to Kath´s improvised Rock guitar playing again emphasize the differences between the two bands. Words of praise should also go to If´s vocalist, who demonstrated exceptional feel on top of his wide range and clear, effortless treatment of even the trickiest challenges.

To summarize, If in general and this, their debut album in particular, are superb examples of what great music is all about. Although mostly forgotten and rarely mentioned in most references, this album is as essential to every Jazz-Rock fan as the air he breathes. Ignoring it would constitute an act of criminal negligence, not to mention the complete void in one´s musical education. Did I say essential?

IF ~ LIVE AT THE BBC
REPERTOIRE 1427 (Barcode: 4009910142721) ~ UK ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1970 - 1972 Released: 2022

This is a sensational archival album by the superb but relatively forgotten British Jazz-Rock Fusion / Brass Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist, which to this very day remains as one of the finest examples of the genre. Sourced from the BBC vaults, the double album presents twenty tracks of original music by the ensemble members, recorded over two years, which span the initial life span of the ensemble, all previously unissued.

Following the ensemble’s formative days in 1969, the core lineup stabilized as a septet, which included vocalist J.W. HodkinsonFind albums by this artist, saxophonists/ flautists Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist and Dave QuincyFind albums by this artist (who wrote most of the material), keyboardist John MealingFind albums by this artist, guitarist Terry SmithFind albums by this artist, bassist Jim RichardsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Dennis ElliottFind albums by this artist. That lineup recorded the ensemble’s first four iconic albums, called simply “IfFind albums with this title”, “If 2Find albums with this title”, “If 3Find albums with this title” and “If 4Find albums with this title”, and disbanded by the end of 1972. That lineup is featured on all the tracks on this album.

The ensemble reformed with a different lineup and continued until 1975, releasing four more studio albums. A reunion lineup released a studio album in 2016, called “If 5Find albums with this title”, which was a sad affair.

Although stylistically somewhat similar to the American Brass Rock groups like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist and others, If had a very unique British / European approach, which less emphasis on brass arrangements but way more complex music and sophisticated ensemble sound. For a more detailed comparison, please read my review of the If’s early albums.

Overall, this is a treasure chest of previously unheard material by one of the best British Jazz-Rock ensembles ever, and an absolute must to the genre’s many fans. The sound is a bit iffy, despite the fact that the material was remastered, but the music is outstanding. RepertoireFind albums on this label are doing a remarkable job by bringing the material from the BBC vaults back to life, but their pricing borders on insane and the booklets are a bit trivial and repetitive lately, lacking the proper historical perspective this music deserves. But this is Holy Grail any way one looks at it, so don’t think twice and grab a copy.

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2016

This is the fifth album by Canadian Brass Rock group LighthouseFind albums by this artist, formed in 1968 by drummer / vocalist Skip ProkopFind albums by this artist. The group’s lineup included between thirteen and eleven members, with brass and rhythm sections and several members featured on vocals, performing quite elaborate vocal harmonies. The album presents ten original songs written by the band members.

Lighthouse had several gifted songwriters and their songs often charted on the Canadian charts. The songs have great melodies and the wonderful instrumental arrangements and brass riffs are a great reminder of times long gone.

The music is somewhat less Jazz oriented than that of other contemporary Brass Rock bands, like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist and others, but features the same characteristics and often offers more elaborate instrumentation and genuinely belongs to the Brass Rock idiom.

It’s good to see this finally available on CD. A must for Brass Rock fans of course.

This is a reissue of the debut album by Czechoslovak Jazz-Rock Fusion band MahagonFind albums by this artist, led by bassist / composer Petr KlapkaFind albums by this artist, originally released in 1978. The collected lineup that recorded this album includes twelve musicians, with some of the best Jazz and Rock players in the country at the time, like keyboardist Michael KocabFind albums by this artist and violinist Jan HrubyFind albums by this artist. It was fronted by female vocalist Zdena AdamovaFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original compositions, all by Klapka.

This new reissue is expanded by five additional tracks, which are radio recordings preceding the recording of the album, also all original compositions, one by Klapka and the rest by other members of the group.

This album was already reissued, together with the second album by the group, as a 2CD set in 2008 on the Indies Happy TrailsFind albums on this label label, but the bonus tracks are released here for the first time.

The music is absolutely timeless and amalgamates many influences, both the obvious ones like Jazz, Rock and Blues, and stylistically follows the Brass Rock ensembles like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist or ChicagoFind albums by this artist, adding also a strong Funk element and Eastern European twist, with some folkloristic inspirations. Combined with the superb musicianship found here, this album is a true gem from start to finish. The fact that this music had no chance to reach listeners in Western Europe at the time is a travesty, which can now be easily rectified.

Overall, this is obviously one of the best East European albums recorded at the time, and although it is forty-five years old, it sounds absolutely fresh and exciting. As usual, hats off to GADFind albums on this label Records for bringing this treasure back to life and expanding it with additional brilliant music, which deserves to be heard and should not be forgotten. No decent Fusion record collection is complete without this album in it. Absolutely essential!

MAHAGON ~ MAHAGON / SLUNECNICE PRO VINCENTA VAN GOGHA (CZECHOSLOVAK JAZZ-ROCK EXPANDED EDITION)
INDIES HAPPY TRAILS 627 (Barcode: 8595026662728) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1976 - 1979 Released: 2008

This wonderful reissue collects all the recordings by the Czechoslovak ensemble MahagonFind albums by this artist. It is a brilliant document of the music scene, which thrived in Eastern Europe behind the Iron Curtain, in all the so-called "Socialist" countries, and was every bit as interesting, groundbreaking and visionary as anything else happening at the same time in Western Europe or the USA. In spite of political pressures, artistic censorship and economic hardships, with very limited access to recordings from the West, decent equipment or proper recording facilities, these young and ambitious musicians were exploding with ideas and boldly exploring new territories. The resulting music created at the time remains completely relevant today and should be rediscovered by young audiences, as it lost absolutely nothing of its power and intellectual quality.

Mahagon was formed by bassist / composer Petr KlapkaFind albums by this artist and included some of the best Jazz players in the country at the time, like keyboardist Michael KocabFind albums by this artist. It was fronted by female vocalist Zdena AdamovaFind albums by this artist and stylistically followed the brass Jazz-Rock ensembles like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist or ChicagoFind albums by this artist, adding also a strong Funk element. Klapka wrote the all-original material as well as the brass arrangements performed by the ensemble.

The bonus material includes several ultra-rare singles. In retrospect this is some of the best Eastern European Jazz-Rock, which should not be missed by any connoisseur of the genre. A must!
Side Note
Since the 1950s Czechoslovakia had a highly developed Jazz scene, certainly in proportion to its population, which included many successful ensembles and even Big Bands, as well as Jazz clubs, festivals and publications, all this in spite of state censorship and political limitations. The similar situation existed since the 1960s as far as Rock (including Progressive Rock and Jazz-Rock Fusion) was concerned, resulting in many excellent, interesting and innovative ensembles.

The music was relatively well documented by the three state owned record labels: SupraphonFind albums on this label (founded in 1927), PantonFind albums on this label (founded in 1968) and OpusFind albums on this label (founded in 1971 and based in Bratislava, created on the base of Slovak division of Supraphon). Following the "Velvet Revolution" in 1989, the state owned record labels were privatized, with Supraphon dominating the local market.

However, Supraphon was quite reluctant as far as exploring its vast back catalogue is concerned, and this is where the small independent Indies Happy TrailsFind albums on this label Records, a reissue label dedicated to the preservation of the recorded legacy of Czechoslovak music, owned and run by the devoted enthusiast / historian Jaromir KratochvilFind albums by this artist, founded in 2007, comes in. Over the years the label released a plethora of brilliant music, reissuing long deleted LPs and extensively exploring the archives in search of bonus material.

The quest of Indies Happy Trails is similar to what the GADFind albums on this label Records label, run by Michal WilczynskiFind albums by this artist, is doing for Polish music, with similar consistency and praiseworthy dedication.

MIRAGE ENSEMBLE ~ MEMORY HAPPENS NOW
LOSEN 128 (Barcode: 7090025831287) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2014 Released: 2014

This is the debut album by young Norwegian sextet called Mirage EnsembleFind albums by this artist, which comprises of guitarist Marius IglandFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Joakim BergstronningFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Magnus DragenFind albums by this artist, trombonist Lars SutterudFind albums by this artist, bassist Steinar GlasFind albums by this artist and drummer Jens NylandFind albums by this artist. The album present nine original compositions, seven of which were composed by Igland, one was co-composed by Glas and Nyland and one was composed by Dragen.

The music is dominated by the presence of the brass section, which immediately creates a fond memory of the great Brass Rock bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s, like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist, DreamsFind albums by this artist, IfFind albums by this artist and many others, less the vocals of course. There is a strong Jazz-Rock Fusion affinity, even if it´s less explicit here due to lack of guitar as a principal solo instrument. The general level of the compositions is very high and the tunes sound original and are very well structured, often consisting of several motifs within one composition.

The instrumental performances by all the band members are professional and inspired, with most of the soloing done by the brass instruments and with less presence of the guitar, in spite the fact that the guitarist wrote most of the music. The guitar contributions are delicate and subtle, and serve more as the link between the brass and the rhythm sections. The rhythm section plays straightforwardly, but solidly, pushing the music forward at a steady pace, often more Rock than Jazz oriented.

Overall this is an excellent and very promising debut album, which hopefully will be followed by more recordings in the future. Although not innovative or groundbreaking, this is a great reminder of Brass Rock, brought up do date by these young and talented musicians. Well done!

EMIL MISZK / THE SONIC SYNDICATE ~ DON`T HESITATE!
ALPAKA 005 (Barcode: 191924149736) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2018

This is the debut album as a leader by young and upcoming Polish Jazz trumpeter / composer Emil MiszkFind albums by this artist, who has made a significant mark on the local scene lately. On this album he leads an impressive octet, called Sonic SyndicateFind albums by this artist, which also includes saxophonists Piotr CheckiFind albums by this artist and Kuba WiecekFind albums by this artist, trombonist Pawel NiewiadomskiFind albums by this artist, guitarist Michal ZienkowskiFind albums by this artist, pianist Szymon BurnosFind albums by this artist, bassist Konrad ZolnierekFind albums by this artist and drummer Slawomir KoryznoFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven original compositions, all by the leader.

The stunning music consists of some of the most original Jazz compositions I have heard in many years. Miszk uses brilliantly the power of the octet, which has almost the strength and possibilities of a Big Band / Orchestral scale, to express his complex, suite like compositions, which are all multilayered, with twisted melody lines and constant tempi changes, but which in spite of their devilishly clever intricacy sound completely coherent and complete. The music moves between melodic statements of the composed themes and almost Free Form mini-improvised passages, presenting a fresh and invigorating approach to Jazz composition, which is simply phenomenal. At times the music ventures into the Brass Rock approach, fondly remembered from the work of ensembles like ChicagoFind albums by this artist and ChaseFind albums by this artist (and many more), but of course is completely brought up to date and modernized.

All the members of the octet are of course radiant instrumentalists, who are able to execute the convoluted and challenging twists and turns of the music spotlessly. The music calls mostly for an ensemble / orchestral sound and presentation, which means that individual soloing, is not the focus of this music, but rather creating sound vistas that require discipline and collaboration by all the participants; which of course does not exclude some blood-curdling solo work by the leader and others and surprising Rocky guitar statements by Zienkowski.

This music is also the epitome of European Jazz, being completely open to all musical styles and influences, managing to amalgamate them in a perfect way. There is a lot of tradition here, some conscious and some subconscious, but absolutely no stagnation or repetition. This is exactly what European Jazz aesthetics is all about – experiment and elegance, good taste and talent. This kind of music can probably only be made in Poland.

Any attempt to describe this beautiful piece of music is of course completely futile and does not replace the experience of listening to it, which of course I absolutely recommend. It is very rare that a debut album of this magnitude appears and usually it happens only once or twice in a given year, and for 2018 this is definitely it. Absolutely not to be missed!

MOON HOAX ~ MOON HOAX
TKLIWI NIHILISCI ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2014

This is an excellent debut album by young Polish Jazz / Fusion ensemble Moon HoaxFind albums by this artist, co-founded by guitarist Michal KarbowskiFind albums by this artist and bassist Ju GhanFind albums by this artist. The lineup is completed by trumpeter Klaudiusz KlosekFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Michal BakFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist / electronic sounds creator Marcin CiupidroFind albums by this artist and drummer Przemyslaw BorowieckiFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original compositions, all by Karbowski.

The music of Moon Hoax is a modernized and updated version of Brass Rock / Jazz-Rock Fusion movement represented by a plethora of bands active in late 1960s and early 1970s, like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist, IfFind albums by this artist, DreamsFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist and many others. If any of those bands would have been active today, they would probably sound quite similar to Moon Hoax, but since Brass Rock is a lost Art Form, this album is a true delight, not only as a kind of retro trip down the nostalgic lane, but as an ass-kicking splendid piece of music, which is fresh and excellent in every respect.

Based on solid melody lines, which are then arranged for the entire ensemble, the music balances between the Jazzy brass section (which sounds much "bigger" than it actually is) and the Rocky guitar, with the vibraphone and electronic sounds filling the spaces and adding the contemporary layer. The rhythm section rocks steadily, but with finesse and great respect for the soloists. There are very few contemporary ensembles which are able to produce such invigorating music of such quality, which puts this album in a class by itself.

Hopefully Moon Hoax will find a way to take this music into the future and find new directions, without loosing the charm. It will be hell to create another such great album as that one; you have been warned!

In the meantime let´s celebrate and enjoy this little gem, as such miracles happen rarely. This is definitely a stunning debut!

NEW JAZZ ORCHESTRA ~ CAMDEN `70
DUSK FIRE 105 (Barcode: 5065001032042) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2008

The New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. NJOFind albums by this artist) led by composer / arranger Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist was Britain’s most prestigious and adventurous big band in the 1960s. Under Ardley’s visionary leadership the band developed the foundations for the modern European Jazz big band sound. Although incorporating the classic American big band tradition of Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist and the more modern approach of Gil EvansFind albums by this artist, Ardley managed to steer his band into uncharted territory, using his unique approach to instrumentation and bold arrangements.

At the time this album was recorded live at London’s Camden Jazz Festival in May of 1970, Ardley was already moving rapidly towards the exploding Jazz-Rock Fusion genre, creating one of the first, and magnificent at that, examples of Jazz-Rock Fusion big band. Compared to American bands at the time, like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist or ChicagoFind albums by this artist, Ardley’s approach is definitely much more refined and orchestral and uses a wider arsenal of the Jazz vocabulary, being therefore much more sophisticated. Having at his disposal some of the best British Jazz musicians (and then also Jazz-Rock Fusion musicians) he was able to turn the NJO into a “mean” and powerful Jazz-Rock Fusion ensemble, which truly fuses Jazz and Rock to the max.

This of course brings us the players and more specifically to the fact that this version of NJO incorporates in its midst the entire lineup of one of the greatest British Jazz-Rock groups, ColosseumFind albums by this artist. Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist (saxophone), Clem ClempsonFind albums by this artist (guitar), Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist (keyboards), Tony ReevesFind albums by this artist (bass) and Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist (drums) all play here, and even a couple of tracks the band recorded on their albums are present, in a big band arrangement of course. With the members of Colosseum as a core of the band and with other notable players like Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist and Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist (trumpet), Dave GellyFind albums by this artist and Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist (saxophone) and even an ultra-rare appearance of Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist on trombone, this is truly a superb group, able to face any challenge Ardley’s arrangements may present them with.

BTW the presence of the Colosseum members is not incidental, as both Reeves and Hiseman were NJO’s founding members and Heckstall-Smith appeared on the NJO’s second album entitled “Le Dejeuner Sur L`HerbeFind albums with this title”. Seven of the tracks present on that album are also included here, which turns this recording into an updated live version of that timeless classic. The original recording tape of this concert had quite a few technical problems, but was painstakingly and beautifully restored to life with an exceptional sound quality considering the circumstances under which it was recorded. One should be truly grateful to the producer of this immensely important historical material for making it available to us, the fans of NJO, Colosseum and British Jazz in general. This is indispensable legacy of the period and a must to any follower of British Jazz music.

NINJABEAT ~ THE WAITING GAME
AMP 007 (Barcode: 662578831006) ~ NORWAY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2015 Released: 2016

This is the debut album by Norwegian Jazz-Rock ensemble NinjabeatFind albums by this artist, a nonet comprising of saxophonist Magnus BakkenFind albums by this artist, bassist Bo BergFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Pal Gunnar FiksdalFind albums by this artist, keyboardists Kristian WentzelFind albums by this artist and Knut LochsenFind albums by this artist, guitarists Ture JansonFind albums by this artist and Svein Rikard MathisenFind albums by this artist, drummer Ole Morten SommerFind albums by this artist and percussionist Bjorn Einar HanstveitFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, six of which were composed by Bakken and two were co-composed by Bakken and Berg.

The music is an excellent example of Brass-Rock, somewhat retro sounding with clear indicators of the great late 1960s Brass-Rock groups like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist and others, but brought up to date with a more electronic sound. The compositions are all excellent and amalgamate elements of Funk, Groove and Soul in addition to the Fusion of Jazz and Rock. Although very accessible, the music is quite complex at times and non trivial at any point.

The execution is also excellent, with many exciting solo parts by the participants and a great balance between the ensemble members, with can be very tricky with such large ensembles. The albums is very coherent and a great fun to listen to, from start to finish.

Overall this is an excellent debut effort, especially so in view of the fact that music of this specific idiom is almost completely gone from the contemporary scene, which of course is a great pity. This album is wholeheartedly recommended to all Brass-Rock fans, who should love this stuff to pieces!

MARCIN PENDOWSKI ~ GUMOLIT
JUDASZ 2020/01 ~ POLAND ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 2017 - 2020 Released: 2020

This is the second album by Polish Jazz bassist / composer Marcin PendowskiFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. PendofskyFind albums by this artist), one of Poland’s best kept secrets. Recorded over four years with no less than twenty musicians / friends / guests, the album presents eleven tracks, all original compositions, two of which are bonus tracks.

Pendowski is a sensational bass player, who is mostly known for his session work and jamming in Warsaw Jazz clubs. His debut album “PendofskyFind albums with this title” from 2014 arrived and disappeared from the scene almost completely unnoticed, despite the fact that it remains a Funk / Groove classic to this very day. If Pendowski would have appeared on the NYC scene, he could probably reach fame and glory (See Jaco PastoriusFind albums by this artist), as his technically brilliant and imaginative bass playing and Big Balls feeling for Fusion / Groove / Soul / Funk is simply unparalleled and absolutely world class.

This album offers a somewhat different approach, as Pendowski added the Brass Rock magic to his instrumentation, expanding the sound beyond imagination. Sounding like the best days of Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist and Tower Of PowerFind albums by this artist combined, but based all around the virtuosic bass parts, this music is absolutely irresistible.

Pendowski also has a great talent to write incredibly catchy riffs, like only very few other can, and if one is able to listen to this album and remain sitting, one is probably deaf or brain-dead. This music Rocks, from the first note to the last!

Hopefully this album will be finally discovered, although it might again prove to be simply too good for its own good and remain undiscovered again, which would be a crying shame.

Thank you Marcin for this music, you are a genius and I hope we won’t have to wait for another six years for the next album. Next time I am in Warsaw; the drinks are on me of course. Warsaw / Poland / the World / wake up, Pendofsky is in town!

PETRI & PETTERSSON BRASS / MAGYAR / DONNA / TABULA RASA ~ POP LIISA VOL. 17 & VOL. 18
SVART 091 (Barcode: 6430065583530) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1973 - 1976 Released: 2018

The "Popstudio" / "Jazzstudio" broadcasts were usually dedicated to one band / artist, but in some cases two acts were combined into one show, which allowed each of them just about twenty minutes to perform, as is the case on these two sessions. Also the first session combines shows from two separate dates – the only such case in the entire Pop Liisa Series, of which this is the last part.

Trombonist Petri PetterssonFind albums by this artist and his three brothers: trumpeters Hannu PetterssonFind albums by this artist and Heikki PetterssonFind albums by this artist and guitarist Ari PetterssonFind albums by this artist formed their band as early as 1966 and released their first eponymous album as Petri & Pettersson BrassFind albums by this artist in 1971. By the time this live radio broadcast was captured in 1973 they were about to release their second album a year later. The lineup included also saxophonist Pekka KajanderFind albums by this artist, organist Jarmo KokkonenFind albums by this artist, bassist Antero AsikainenFind albums by this artist and drummer Esa KarkiFind albums by this artist. Together the octet was a bona fide ass kicking Brass Rock ensemble, which could give any contemporary band of this kind around the world a run for their money. They perform six pieces, two originals and the rest covers of Rock songs (one by ChicagoFind albums by this artist) arranged by the group.

The band MagyarFind albums by this artist recorded only one album released on LoveFind albums on this label Records in 1974 and the material they perform on this live radio broadcast originates from this release. The band consisted of vocalist / composer Harry GunaropoulosFind albums by this artist, vocalist Jouko NiiranenFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Markku HeikkonenFind albums by this artist, organist Vesa KurkelaFind albums by this artist, guitarist Kari HuttunenFind albums by this artist, bassist Taito KettunenFind albums by this artist and drummer Kari PietikainenFind albums by this artist. All their songs were composed by Gunaropoulos and featured lyrics by the poet Jukka ItkonenFind albums by this artist, which placed them in the sung poetry / protest songs idioms, due to the highly social / political involvement of Itkonen´s poetry.

The band DonnaFind albums by this artist never managed to record an album. They consisted of guitarist / vocalist Jari YliahoFind albums by this artist, lead guitarist Tapio ManninenFind albums by this artist, bassist Vesa ReijonenFind albums by this artist and drummer Paavo KaiholaFind albums by this artist. Pianist Lasse RajaFind albums by this artist played on one track. They perform five original songs, all co-composed by the band members and featuring lyrics by poet Kimmo KoskimaaFind albums by this artist. The songs have a distinct Reggae feel but are beautifully melodic and also belong to the sung poetry idiom. This material is a true gem as the only recorded material by the band was just one single they managed to record.

The band Tabula RasaFind albums by this artist managed to record two albums on Love Records during their short existence. They were one of the last Finnish groups of the first Prog wave. Their lineup went through several changes and the live radio broadcast was recorded by vocalist Jukka SalmelaFind albums by this artist, organist Jarno SinisaloFind albums by this artist, guitarist Heikki SilvennoinenFind albums by this artist, bassist Tapio SuominenFind albums by this artist and drummer Jukka AronenFind albums by this artist. They perform just two lengthy versions of songs from their second album, composed by Silvennoinen and Sinisalo, both featuring excellent instrumental work.

Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for Classic Rock, Brass Rock and Prog-heads this is an absolute must have!
Side Note
The Finnish independent label SvartFind albums on this label Records released an unprecedented series of albums called Pop Liisa and Jazz Liisa, which present priceless historical recordings of Finnish Rock, Progressive Rock, Jazz-Rock Fusion and Jazz music, recorded live and broadcasted from the Liisankatu Studios in Helsinki under the "Popstudio" and "Jazzstudio" monikers between 1972 and 1977. The studios were owned by the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company), a public broadcasting service, which not only allowed the burgeoning Finnish music scene at the time to be exposed but also carefully archived the recordings for future generations. All this incredible music was previously unissued and collectively is probably the most important document of Finnish music from that period ever assembled.

The music was released on 36 LPs (Pop Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18 and Jazz Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18) and on 18 CDs with every two consecutive volumes combined on one CD.

The sound quality is absolutely superb, often better than the sound quality on the LPs released by these artists at the time. Many of the groups appearing on these albums never managed to record an album and these recordings are the only recorded legacy in existence of their activity. The released are accompanied by well researched and intelligent liner notes.

This archival project is an outstanding example of how Cultural Legacy should be treated as well as of exemplary dedication to record producing professionalism.

SKALDOWIE ~ PODROZ MAGICZNA
KAMELEON 19 ~ POLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1973 - 1978 Released: 2012

This album by the legendary Polish group SkaldowieFind albums by this artist, founded by brothers: Andrzej ZielinskiFind albums by this artist (vocalist, keyboardist, composer, arranger and leader) and Jacek ZielinskiFind albums by this artist (vocalist, multi-instrumentalist) presents four recordings of instrumental Symphonic Prog pieces recorded during the 1970s, all previously unreleased, which of course is a major event for the many fans of the group. The other group members on this album are: guitarist Jerzy TarsinskiFind albums by this artist, bassist / vocalist Konrad RatynskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Jan BudziaszekFind albums by this artist. Two Polish Symphonic Orchestras and one German Radio Orchestra and two Big Bands are utilized in the recording as well as choir in one case. Two guest guitarists: Pawel BirulaFind albums by this artist and Andrzej PuczynskiFind albums by this artist participate in the title track. Andrzej Zielinski composed and arranged three of the pieces and Jan OleszkowiczFind albums by this artist composed the remaining one.

The title piece (and the first track on the album) is the longest and most complex composition, lasting over half an hour. It was commission as a ballet suite, which was performed on and filmed by Polish TV. The suite is subdivided into twelve themes, flowing each other and presenting a coherent musical continuum. The music combines influences from Classical music, World Music (mostly Middle Eastern and Spanish motifs), Jazz and of course Prog and is simply exquisite.

The second piece, which was recorded in West Germany for the WDR is a shorter suite utilizing extensively the brass section of the Radio Big Band, which results in Jazz-Rock oriented music similar to that performed by Brass-Rock bands like ChicagoFind albums by this artist, Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist and others.

The third piece is another suite, comprising of pieces which were used as the soundtrack for a film comedy, directed by Andrzej KondriatukFind albums by this artist entitled "Jak To Sie Robi (How Is It Done)".

The last piece is an ambitious concerto for a Rock group and Orchestra, similar to other such endeavors tried previously, like Jon LordFind albums by this artist´s (Deep PurpleFind albums by this artist) "Concerto For Group And OrchestraFind albums with this title", which pioneered this style. This recording was the first event of the kind in Poland and Skaldowie was the only group that could perform it, due to their musical education and ability to read music fluently.

Overall this album presents some superb instrumental music, very versatile but all of the highest quality, which shows previously unknown sides of the group and emphasizes their highly artistic ambitions. Andrzej Zielinski is portrayed not only as an extraordinary songwriter, but also as an ambitious composer of extended musical works. The musicality, intelligence and open-mindedness heard on this album are simply exceptional.

The bonus DVD presents the filmed performance of the ballet suite, which is the title track of this album. This album is an absolute must for all the many fans of the group around the world and might surprise many by its wealth of ideas and musical beauty. Definitely worth investigating!

SUNBEAM 5008 (Barcode: 5051125500819) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Guitarist / composer Terry SmithFind albums by this artist was one of the busiest musicians on the British Jazz scene in the late 1960s. Voted the best Jazz guitarist in the 1968 polls, when this album was recorded, Smith was not only playing at the regular Jazz venues around London, but was also a member of the backup group of singer Scott WalkerFind albums by this artist, who was at the peak of his popularity at the time. Walker, although extremely successful as a Pop artists, had a keen musical ear and was trying to get away from the sugary Pop image by employing some of the best Jazz musicians at the time In his band, which was led by no other than the legendary Ronnie ScottFind albums by this artist. Walker used his influence with his label (PhilipsFind albums on this label) to offer a recording opportunity to some of the young and extremely talented musicians in the band, which led to the recording of this debut album by Terry Smith. As this album shows, Smith already had an extraordinary technique and feel for Jazz. Based on the tradition created by players like Kenny BurrellFind albums by this artist and Wes MontgomeryFind albums by this artist, Smith took his guitar work a few steps further adding his personal touch. Of course just a few months later Smith would become one of the founding members of the British Jazz-Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist, which successfully competed with their American counterparts like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist and ChicagoFind albums by this artist. On this album Smith is accompanied by some of the best British Jazz musicians at the time, including Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist on trumpet, Ray WarleighFind albums by this artist on sax and flute, Gordon BeckFind albums by this artist on piano and Ron MathewsonFind albums by this artist on bass. Of the eight tracks on this album, three are his originals and the rest standards, beautifully arranged for a big Jazz ensemble. Two of the tracks are performed by Smith’s trio with Bob StuckleyFind albums by this artist on organ and Chris KarenFind albums by this artist on drums. This is an excellent album by all means and it’s great to have it back from oblivion after all these years. Recommended!

SWITCH ON QUINTET ~ OUR CAR WILL NEVER STOP
FM 003 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2009 Released: 2010

This is an excellent debut album by Polish Jazz-Rock Fusion Switch On QuintetFind albums by this artist which comprises of young musicians making their early stepson the local scene: trumpeter Maciej FortunaFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Marcin KajperFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jakub KujawaFind albums by this artist, bassist Michal RybkaFind albums by this artist and drummer Bogumil RomanowskiFind albums by this artist. They perform eleven original compositions, four by Romanowski, three by Fortuna, three by Kajper / Kujawa and the remaining one by Kajper. Keyboardist Michal SzlempoFind albums by this artist guests on selected tracks.

The music is a superb fresh approach to Fusion, which balances the Jazzy sound and feel of the brass with the Rocky sound and feel of the electric guitar, which although reminiscent of the legendary ChicagoFind albums by this artist, is completely up to date and kicks ass like mad. To be perfectly honest I haven´t heard such great Fusion in a very long time and this album is real treat. What a pity it remains almost completely obscure. These young Polish cats could teach a thing or two to all those wannabe American Fusion players, who constantly flood the marked with Fusion garbage.

As usual on the Polish scene the level of virtuosity displayed by the musicians is astounding, especially in view of their age. Fortuna´s fiery solos soar through the air with incredible intensity, Kujawa´s distorted guitar rips the air and its Bluesy undertones break your heart and Kajper´s saxophone (especially the soprano) twist and turn like a snake on acid. The rhythm section kicks exactly when and where needed, keeping the ride right on time and your feet tapping uncontrollably.

Honestly this is one of the best Fusion albums I´ve heard in a long time and an absolute joyous musical ride, highly recommended to all Fusion heads out there. Fortuna, who since recording this album produces already a plethora of superb Jazz and other music, shows here his incredible versatility and I hope he´ll return to play his chops in a Fusion environment again. Not to be missed!

WALRUS ~ WALRUS
ESOTERIC 2071 (Barcode: 5013929717121) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2008

Only album by British Jazz-Rock octet WalrusFind albums by this artist, which was one of the first full-blown British Jazz-Rock ensembles modeled after the American counterparts like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist and ChicagoFind albums by this artist. Although not as sophisticated as IfFind albums by this artist, the other British ensemble following the same path, Walrus was nevertheless quite excellent as well and it is a great pity they didn´t manage to record more albums. Formed by bassist Steve HawthornFind albums by this artist, who also wrote the bulk of their material, the band was fronted by vocalist Noel GreenawayFind albums by this artist and included guitarist John ScatesFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Barry ParfittFind albums by this artist and drummer Nick GabbFind albums by this artist (or Roger HarrisonFind albums by this artist) as well as a brass section with trumpeter Don RichardsFind albums by this artist (who was also in charge of the brass arrangements), and two saxophonists Roy VoceFind albums by this artist and Bill HoadFind albums by this artist. The music is all original except one track, which is a great cover of a TrafficFind albums by this artist song, and is all very interesting. In retrospect this is a true gem, which should have done much better than it did at the time and it´s a great pleasure to have it back in circulation. Considering the fact that Brass-Rock was relatively rare, this album is a must to every fan of early Jazz-Rock Fusion!
