  | WIGWAM ~ THE LUCKY GOLDEN STRIPES AND STARPOSE ESOTERIC 2175 (Barcode: 5013929727526) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1976 Released: 2010
7th album by Finnish Prog band WigwamFind albums by this artist, the most famous Prog act from that country, which is the second recording by Wigwam Mk II. Following the departure of two founding members bassist Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist and organist Jukka GustavsonFind albums by this artist, who gave Wigwam its distinctive sound and musical direction, the band had to reorganize and recruit new members, which of course also influenced their musical direction. The remaining founding members: vocalist Jim PembrokeFind albums by this artist and drummer Ronnie OsterbergFind albums by this artist recruited guitarist Pekka RechardtFind albums by this artist and bassist Mans GroundstroemFind albums by this artist to join the band for the previous album, and added a fifth member, keyboardist Hessu HietanenFind albums by this artist by the time this album was recorded. The revamped Wigwam, more Pop / Rock oriented than the original incarnation of the band, was still a formidable ensemble able of producing excellent music, and the album includes plenty of superb melodies and excellent musicianship, which are effective and memorable. Although initially the album was criticized for being overly commercial, in retrospect it is every bit as good as the other albums the band recorded, being simply different. This album was one of the very few Finnish albums to be released also in UK (on the VirginFind albums on this label label), shortly after it was released in his home country on the legendary LoveFind albums on this label label. A must for Prog fans!

  | PEKKA POHJOLA ~ B THE MAGPIE ESOTERIC 2176 (Barcode: 5013929727625) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1974 Released: 2010
2nd album by Finnish bassist / composer Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist, one of the greatest Prog musicians of all times, who was a founding member of the legendary Finnish Prog band WigwamFind albums by this artist. | ARNE DOMNERUS ~ THE SHEIK / BROST-TONER FOUR LEAF CLOVER 2005/6 (Barcode: 7319200042837) ~ SWEDEN ~ Jazz Recorded: 1974 - 1979 Released: 2002
This is a reissue of two albums, both recorded in 1979, by Swedish saxophonist / composer / bandleader Arne DomnerusFind albums by this artist, one of the Godfathers of the Swedish Jazz scene, active for over five decades with an extensive recording legacy of over a hundred albums as a leader and sideman.
CD1 is the album “The SheikFind albums with this title”, recorded in a quintet setting with American pianist / vocalist Jimmy RowlesFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Jan AllanFind albums by this artist, bassist Georg RiedelFind albums by this artist and drummer Rune CarlssonFind albums by this artist (the last two were one of the best European rhythm sections at the time). Of the nine tracks on this album seven are standards and two are original compositions by Riedel. This reissue adds a bonus track recorded by a Big Band, which features Domnerus, recorded in 1975. Considering the presence of Rowles, this album is all in traditional mainstream Jazz setting.
CD2 is the album “Brost-TonerFind albums with this title”, recorded in a nonet and quartet settings, which include top Swedish Jazz players at the time, including pianists Bengt HallbergFind albums by this artist or Gunnar SvenssonFind albums by this artist, guitarist Rune GustafssonFind albums by this artist, Riedel and drummer Egil JohansenFind albums by this artist. Of the ten tracks on this album, eight are original compositions by the performing musicians and two are standards. This reissue adds a bonus track recorded by a Big Band, which features Domnerus, recorded in 1974. The music here is completely different from that on the companion album, full of vibrant modern European Jazz, with frequent tempo changes, complex harmonies and sophisticated compositions, which are ideal vehicles for the superb improvisations.
Overall, this is a wonderful visit to the Swedish Jazz scene in the mid-1970s, which I had plenty of opportunity to experience first-hand during my visits there and meeting many of the musicians, who perform on these albums. Sweden had one of the strongest local Jazz scenes in Europe at the time and every visiting American Jazz musician used to include Sweden in their concert roster.

  | WIGWAM ~ HARD N` HORNY LOVE 009 ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock
1st album from 1969 by this seminal Finnish Prog band, which is considered by many as one of the finest of all. Wigwam was a breeding ground for the greatest Finnish musicians to come, like Pekka Pohjola who plays bass on the second album. Heavy organ sound resembles Procol Harum.

  | OTTO DONNER TREATMENT ~ EN SOISI SEN PÄÄTTYVÄN LOVE 014 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz & Poetry
Finns have not only great respect for their musicians, but also for their poets and therefore they produced a large body of work where music and poetry are combined. This is one of such projects for which the composer / arranger Otto DonnerFind albums by this artist created music to poems by Pentti SaarikoskiFind albums by this artist to be performed by a vocal group and jazz ensemble. Recorded in 1970, this excellent example of Finnish jazz includes some of the best players on the local scene at the time (Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist - tenor sax & flute, Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist - drums, a.m.o.). Donner plays trumpet & vibes and directs the whole project.
The music is typical European jazz of the period, melodic but complex and constantly surprising. The composer also cleverly includes shades of Finnish folk music in the background of the compositions. The album includes 18 short pieces, all quite different, but flowing naturally into one coherent suite. The group vocals resemble the European vocal jazz tradition as demonstrated by the French group Les Double SixFind albums by this artist or NOVIFind albums by this artist from Poland. Sublime music for people with highly developed and sensitive taste glands.

1st album from 1971. Finnish guitar hero shines on the guitar, playing his own compositions with a host of friendly guest musicians, including the brilliant Pekka Pohjola on bass. | JUHANI AALTONEN ~ ETIQUETTE LOVE 119 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1974
Debut album by one of the greatest European jazz players - Finnish virtuoso Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist. The album presents Aaltonen`s incredible range of instruments: tenor and alto saxophones and a wide selection of flutes, all of which he handles with exquisite elegance and total control. The settings vary from solo to quintet and the music is European free jazz - intelligent, sophisticated, provocative and beautifully structured. Other superb Finnish musicians, including the legendary Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist on drums and the divine Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist, who is (for me) one of the best bass players on this planet, accompany the leader. This music is typical of European free jazz in the early 1970`s, when cross-country cooperation flourished. Aaltonen and Vesala were used to play with German, Polish and other European musicians, swapping influences, ideas and cultural backgrounds and creating a new amalgam of the jazz Art Form, which was aeons ahead of its time and remains the most advanced achievement of the genre to this day. This album is an absolute must for people with two ears and any substance between them.

  | OLLI AHVENLAHTI ~ BANDSTAND LOVE 126 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz
Debut album by the brilliant Finnish keyboards player, recorded in 1975. Ahvenlahti studied music at the Helsinki Sibelius Academy and later at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Upon his return to Finland, he formed a superb quintet with Swedish trumpeter Bertil Löfgren and Finnish jazz masters - Pekka Pöyry (sax), Pekka Sarmanto (bass) and Esko Rosnell (drums) – and recorded this debut album, for which he wrote all the music. Strongly influenced by the jazz / rock and jazz / funk movements, he masterly incorporated those influences with European melody lines, creating a set of wonderfully melodic and yet beautifully swinging tunes, performed with taste and gusto by the quintet. The album flows easily, although the music is anything but trivial. For people who love melodic jazz, masterly executed, this album will prove a continuous source of pleasure for years.

  | JUHANI AALTONEN / OTTO DONNER ~ STRINGS LOVE 160 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz
Don`t let the album`s title fool you – this is by no means one of those sugary “jazz & strings” albums – no way. This is a masterpiece created by Finland`s greatest jazz player – Aaltonen - and greatest jazz composer / arranger – Donner, designed as an exercise in “easy listening”. Of course the “easy listening” those two gentlemen create is anything but easy! Donner composed a series of compositions, which serve as a basis for Aaltonen`s beautiful improvisations. The “background” music is performed by some of the best Finnish jazzmen at the time, including Esko Linnavalli on electric piano and Esko Rosnell on drums, with intricate string arrangements. Aaltonen plays “on top” of these compositions, sometimes very melodically, sometimes quite freely, with a wonderful passion and superb zest. This is heavenly music, which remains with you for lifetime and unveils new layers of pleasure every time.

  | EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ THE FRONT IS BREAKING LOVE 188 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1976
Apart from Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist, Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist is probably the most well known Finnish jazz musician outside of his native country, due to his US residency and numerous recordings around the world. Deeply influenced by John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, he started his jazz adventure playing free jazz in cahoots with Edward Vesala and Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist as early as 1964 (which was about the time European free jazz was developing fiercely). Later on he moved away from free jazz and concentrated more on structured and carefully composed music. By the time this album was recorded, the jazz world was deeply involved in the Jazz-Rock Fusion explosion, following Miles DavisFind albums by this artist’ pioneering work in the field and later on groups like John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist’s Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist. Inspired by these developments, Koivistoinen decided to record a fusion album, for which he composed the music. The carefully assembled a dreamy combo to record the music, in which he gathered the best Scandinavian musicians from both the jazz and Progressive Rock genres, including Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist (drums) and Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist (piano) – Finland / jazz, Jukka TolonenFind albums by this artist (guitar – Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist) and Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist (bass – WigwamFind albums by this artist) – Finland / Prog and Wlodek GulkowskiFind albums by this artist (keyboards) and Georg WadeniusFind albums by this artist (guitar – Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist) - Sweden (well Gulkowski was a Polish refugee) / Fusion. The result is surely one of the best, most sophisticated and musically uplifting fusion albums ever recorded and an absolute must for any fan of the genre. This was to be the only fusion album Koivistoinen would record, as he returned to “pure” jazz soon after.

  | EDWARD VESALA ~ RODINA LOVE 189 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1976
For almost four decades, until his untimely death in 1999, Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist was one the leaders of the European jazz scene with dozens of recordings to his credit (as leader and sideman). His phenomenal talent as a drummer, composer, bandleader and trendsetter made him a pivotal figure and his status was truly legendary. This recording is one of the highlights of his illustrious career. It is a suite for a large jazz ensemble, which incorporates modern jazz idioms with Eastern European folk motifs. Vesala collected for this project the creme de la creme of the Finnish jazz scene, with such illustrious names as Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist (sax & flute), Esa HelasvuoFind albums by this artist (piano), Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist (bass) and two phenomenal Polish jazz musicians: Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist (trumpet) and Tomasz SzukalskiFind albums by this artist (sax), with whom he played many times before in the Polish / Finnish quartet. Debut album by Finnish bass player and composer Make Lievonen recorded in 1977. Heavily influenced by Weather Report, Lievonen wrote the music for this album to reflect the jazz / rock fusion experience to the extreme. The best Finnish jazz players take part on this project, with Pekka Pöyry handling the sax parts, Olli Ahvenlahti the keyboard parts and Esko Rosnell in charge of the drums. | LOVE AND BEAUTY SEEKERS ~ ZAR LOVE & BEAUTY 01 (Barcode: 5707471048733) ~ POLAND ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 2015 Released: 2016
This is the debut album by young Polish trio Love And Beauty SeekersFind albums by this artist, which consists of saxophonist Jedrzej LagodzinskiFind albums by this artist, bassist Franciszek PospieszalskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Szymon GasiorekFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven original compositions, five of which were composed by Lagodzinski, four by Pospieszalski and two by Gasiorek.
I had the pleasure to hear the trio live a couple of times in 2015, first in a small club in Krakow and than as guests of my Singer Jazz Festival in Warsaw, and was very impressed by the music they create. This album captures this music very authentically and presents one of the most interesting new ensembles on the Polish scene, even though as of now they reside in Copenhagen, where they still attend the local Music Conservatory.
The music of the trio is a unique amalgam of Free Jazz, Improvised Music, Punk and Romanticism, which results in an incredibly fascinating, vibrant and fresh sound and attitude. Although the music includes a lot of freedom and space, it also features beautiful melodic themes and coherent development of the compositions, in complete contrast to the chaos and mayhem that usually characterizes Avant-Garde music. The trio uses a plethora of effects, toys and other paraphernalia to create sounds that ornament their basic trio sound, which also broadens the overall result.
The individual contributions by all the trio members are absolutely perfect within the framework of their music. They are all equal partners and the trio is not a saxophone player accompanied by a rhythm section, but three musicians who play different instruments and create music together. Lagodzinski elegantly moves between playing gentle melodic themes and blowing his horn wildly, Pospieszalski switches between clear bass lines to freely improvised multi-tempo passages and Gasiorek, as appropriate for a gifted drummer, plays anything but basic rhythmic patterns, simply moving all over the place and creating layers of percussive embellishments.
Polish Jazz is a very fertile soil for Free Jazz / Improvised Music and the number of individual musicians and ensembles working within the framework of the Avant-Garde scene is stupefying. And yet this ensemble definitely stands out as a surprising contestant to the veterans of the genre with this mind blowing debut. I am already highly curious as to their next release, hoping it will be a worthy follow up to this debut effort, which won´t be easy to beat or even match easily. Respect!

  | PIMPONO ENSEMBLE ~ HOPE LOVE PEACE FAITH LOVE & BEAUTY 02 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016
This is a brilliant debut album by an international Jazz ensemble from Copenhagen, called Pimpono EnsembleFind albums by this artist, led by young Polish drummer / composer Szymon GasiorekFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Pimpon), who is also a member of the excellent Polish trio Love And Beauty SeekersFind albums by this artist. Three guest musicians appear on selected tracks. The ensemble performs eight original compositions, all by Gasiorek.
The music is a fascinating amalgam of modern influences, wildly diverse and ranging from Minimal Music to Free Jazz / Improvised Music, combined coherently and skillfully by the composer, who also makes a brilliant use of the large ensemble, which is sadly very rarely done these days. It is truly amazing to find such a mature piece of music conceived and executed by such young musicians. The music changes moods and atmospheres from one piece to another and also within each piece and the listener is unable to predict what might happen next, which of course turns this into a fascinating listening experience.
This album demonstrates the power of expression and the sophistication of music written and executed by large ensembles, which enables a wide sonic spectrum, a stylistic diversity and of course the inclusion of many soloists playing often in parallel, improvising concurrently. There is of course place for beautiful melodic themes and harmonic arrangements, but these are not the core of the music, only a part of the palette the composer uses to build up his sonic world.
Although this might sound a bit of an overstatement, this album could serve as a text book example of what modern Jazz composition for large ensembles is all about. Therefore my wholehearted recommendation for musicians involved in this area is to get a copy of the album ASAP. Connoisseurs of modern Jazz, who are open-minded and love adventurous music, should find this album a stunning listening experience. Kudos!

  | LOVE ~ E BIK DANGAM LAN LOVE & BEAUTY 03 (Barcode: 5707471051313) ~ POLAND ~ Avant-Garge Pop Recorded: 2016 - 2017 Released: 2017
This is the debut album by the ensemble LOVEFind albums by this artist, led by Polish (resident in Denmark) saxophonist / composer Jedrzej LagodzinskiFind albums by this artist, who is also a member of the Love And Beauty SeekersFind albums by this artist trio. The ensemble includes two additional Polish musicians: bassist Tomo JacobsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Szymon GasiorekFind albums by this artist and three Scandinavian musicians: vocalist Lo ErsareFind albums by this artist, tuba player Rasmus Kjaergard LundFind albums by this artist and pianist Petter RylenFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, all by the leader.
The music is an amalgam of contemplative chants / songs and passages of Jazz improvisations based on the basic melodies. The unusual instrumentation and overall stylistic aesthetic creates a dreamlike continuity, which moves from one track to another, with long quiet passages which build up to a crescendo eruptions and then return again to more melodic and quiet moments. The music has some characteristic of a religious / spiritual ceremony and the poems used as part of the lyrics emphasize that atmosphere.
The problem with albums like this one is that it might appeal to a very limited audience, as it falls between categories: it is not a Jazz album per se and it is not a meditation / relaxation album as well. In short, only open-minded listeners, who like surprises and adventure in the music they listen to, might love listening to it. Personally I´ve had a great fun listening to this album and recommend it to my fellow unconventional music lovers.
Based on his recording activity Lagodzinski clearly emerges as a versatile composer / instrumentalist and is certainly worth being closely watched in the future, as his output so far is definitely very promising.

  | ALFONS SLIK ~ NIE PRZEJMUJ SIE LOVE & BEAUTY 06 ~ POLAND ~ Avant-Garde Jazz Recorded: 2018 Released: 2019
This is the debut album by Avant-Garde Polish Jazz duo Alfons SlikFind albums by this artist, consisting of pianist / composer Grzegorz TarwidFind albums by this artist and drummer / composer Szymon GasiorekFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original compositions, three composed by Tarwid, two by Gasiorek and four co-composed by them both. In addition to the obvious piano and drums the duo utilizes some spoken word parts on three of the tracks, which are on the borderline of Jazz & Poetry / Rap.
The music is everything the listeners familiar with the work of these two brilliant young musicians (separately and collectively) might expect, and beyond. Although definitely unconventional and innovative, and therefore Avant-Garde, the music is not missing some melodic touches and coherent continuity. The total playing time of just under half an hour is a wise decision in this case as the intensity and diversity of the musical content is mercilessly multifarious and complex.
Piano and drums duet is surely not a typical musical setting, especially when both instruments receive a completely equally important role within the music. The dialogue the two partners are able to develop herein is truly spectacular and rarely present elsewhere.
Overall this is a fascinating musical adventure, which stands apart from most Avant-Garde projects in Polish / European Jazz. Paraphrasing on an old slogan, this is Avant-Garde with a human face, which rather than alienating the listener tries to bring him into the music and embrace it. This little gem is absolutely wholeheartedly recommended!

  | PIMPONO ENSEMBLE ~ SURVIVAL KIT LOVE & BEAUTY 07 ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2019 Released: 2020
This is the second album by the Pimpono EnsembleFind albums by this artist, a Copenhagen based group of Polish, Danish and Norwegian musicians, led by Polish drummer / composer Szymon GasiorekFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Pimpon), which also includes trumpeter Jonas DueFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Jedrzej LagodzinskiFind albums by this artist and Michal BielFind albums by this artist, tuba player Rasmus SvaleFind albums by this artist, and bassists Jonatan UranesFind albums by this artist and Rafal RozalskiFind albums by this artist. A couple of guests take part in the proceedings. The album presents ten original compositions, all by the leader.
The music follows some of the ideas put forward on the brilliant debut album, presenting highly original music, which mixes Jazz sophistication with Rock energy and Avant-Garde improvisations, creating a big, impressive sound and a continuous surge of creativity.
Although this lineup of the ensemble (a septet) is smaller than the one performing on the debut (a nonet) there seems to be no less power of expression and utilizing of the available instruments to create a kaleidoscope of sounds, and a rich tapestry of soundscapes, which is extremely effective
As I have already stated in my review of the debut album, this music is first and foremost a reflection of the unique compositional skills of Gasiorek, which is often as bold and forward thinking as what Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist was doing with his ensembles decades ago. Luckily the composer is able to find musicians, who are able to follow his ideas and put them into reality, which considering the complexity and diversity of this music is nothing short of miraculous.
I must admit that in retrospect this album impresses me even more than the shocking debut released four years earlier. The music is more concise, coherent and mature, and honestly has almost no parallels among what is currently being created within the Jazz idiom worldwide, pointing towards what Jazz is able to accomplish based on its tradition but firmly and boldly pushing the boundaries.
Overall this is one of those albums that immediately deliver a merciless punch in your solar plexus and you remain stunned for quite a while. Sadly it will most probably not be properly appreciated by the audiences, as happens with the best music time after time, but who gives a damn? This is unequivocally a masterpiece and anybody missing listening to this music is a fool!

  | CHRISTIAN SCHWINDT QUINTET ~ FOR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES ROCKET 068 (Barcode: 6417138607669) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1963 - 1965 Released: 2011
This is a reissue of the seminal album by Finnish drummer / composer / bandleader Christian SchwindtFind albums by this artist, one of the Godfathers of modern Finnish Jazz. This album is considered as the second modern Jazz release in Finland, preceded only by the Esa PethmanFind albums by this artist album "The Modern Sound Of FinlandFind albums with this title", which was recorded in late 1964 / early 1965, whereas this album was recorded in November 1965. Collectors interested in more fine details should check out the phenomenal and pioneering Finnish Jazz Discography by Hans WesterbergFind albums by this artist, published in 1977 or my publication on this subject from 1992, both published by the Finnish Jazz Federation.
The original album presented seven original compositions, which were recorded in two separate sessions. Six compositions were recorded by a new lineup of the quintet that included trumpeter Otto DonnerFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Erik DannholmFind albums by this artist, pianist Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist and bassist Tapani TamminenFind albums by this artist. The compositions were three each by Donner and Sarmanto. The seventh composition was recorded with the old lineup of the quintet that included pianist Pentti HietanenFind albums by this artist, who also composed the music, and bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist. The expanded reissue adds three bonus tracks (two by Hietanen and one by Donner) recorded in late 1963 and early 1964 by the a.m. old lineup and saxophonist Tuomas KotovirtaFind albums by this artist instead of Dannholm. Sadly for such monumental reissue the research was extremely sloppy and the cover art is a reprint of the original, which includes several mistakes.
The music is of course phenomenal, and reflects the birth of modern Finnish / European Jazz, which was exploding across the continent, finally breaking with the stale American tradition and searching for new ways of expression. It is fascinating to compare this music to the recordings made across Europe at this pivotal time and see the similarities that Jazz musicians in UK, Poland, Germany and other countries were creating at the time, exploring the wonderful Freedom and breaking all existing boundaries on the fly.
In retrospect it is sad that this album is the only recorded legacy by Schwindt as a leader, but let us not forget that he co-founded of the LoveFind albums on this label Records label (with Donner and journalist Atte BlomFind albums by this artist) in 1966, which changed the Finnish music landscape dramatically.
This album is an icon of modern European Jazz and although the music was recorded fifty-five years ago, it still sounds absolutely astounding and completely relevant. Sadly this reissue is now very hard to find and it’s a crime that this album is not available on the market for new generations to learn from!

  | WIGWAM / TAIVAANVUOHI ~ POP LIISA VOL. 03 & VOL. 04 SVART 006 (Barcode: 6430050665692) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1973 Released: 2016
By the time this live broadcast was captured on tape WigwamFind albums by this artist, the most celebrated Finnish Fusion / Prog Supergroup, already released three seminal albums and were about to release their fourth album "BeingFind albums with this title" recorded in the months preceding this show. The lineup was steady since the second album when the new bassist Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist joined vocalist / organist Jukka GustavsonFind albums by this artist, British expatriate vocalist / pianist Jim PembrokeFind albums by this artist and drummer Ronnie OsterbergFind albums by this artist. Following the release of the third album "FairyportFind albums with this title" Pohjola released his phenomenal debut album "Pihkasilma KaarnakorvaFind albums with this title" and Pembroke released his debut album "Wicked IvoryFind albums with this title", both in 1972 on LoveFind albums on this label Records. "Being" was to be the last studio album by this "classic" Wigwam lineup.
The group performs five pieces: a short intro (cover of a John LennonFind albums by this artist song), one piece from Pohjola´s debut composed by him, one song from the forthcoming "Being" album composed by Pembroke, the title song from the "Fairyport" album composed by Gustavson and finally one piece from Pembroke´s debut composed by him.
Overall this recording presents Wigwam at the absolute peak of the first period in the group´s history and offers an amazing example of European / Finnish Progressive Rock and Fusion created at the time.
In complete contrast to Wigwam, TaivaanvuohiFind albums by this artist was one of the many Finnish Prog / Fusion groups that despite their relative popularity as a live act did not manage record an album and disappeared into oblivion without leaving a trace. The group was formed in 1972 and after a long period of personal hiatus the lineup stabilized around the founding member guitarist Sami HurmerintaFind albums by this artist and included also vocalist Tarmo RoselundFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Pertti PaivinenFind albums by this artist, bassist Urpo SiitonenFind albums by this artist and drummer Ismo RaisanenFind albums by this artist. This is the lineup that is heard here playing live and which also started to record material for the debut album by the group, which sadly eventually never materialized.
The group performs five pieces, four of which are original compositions by Hurmerinta with lyrics by him and other group members and one is a composition by Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist. The music is a unique mixture of Prog, Fusion and Psychedelia featuring extensive guitar and saxophone soloing and judging by what can be heard here they would have perhaps created another Finnish gem album, but alas it was not to be.
Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early 1970s that one is able to hear and for Fusion and Jazz oriented Prog-heads this is an absolute must have! Side Note The Finnish independent label SvartFind albums on this label Records released an unprecedented series of albums called Pop Liisa and Jazz Liisa, which present priceless historical recordings of Finnish Rock, Progressive Rock, Jazz-Rock Fusion and Jazz music, recorded live and broadcasted from the Liisankatu Studios in Helsinki under the "Popstudio" and "Jazzstudio" monikers between 1972 and 1977. The studios were owned by the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company), a public broadcasting service, which not only allowed the burgeoning Finnish music scene at the time to be exposed but also carefully archived the recordings for future generations. All this incredible music was previously unissued and collectively is probably the most important document of Finnish music from that period ever assembled.
The music was released on 36 LPs (Pop Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18 and Jazz Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18) and on 18 CDs with every two consecutive volumes combined on one CD.
The sound quality is absolutely superb, often better than the sound quality on the LPs released by these artists at the time. Many of the groups appearing on these albums never managed to record an album and these recordings are the only recorded legacy in existence of their activity. The released are accompanied by well researched and intelligent liner notes.
This archival project is an outstanding example of how Cultural Legacy should be treated as well as of exemplary dedication to record producing professionalism.

  | JUKKA HAURU / NONO SODERBERG / FINNFOREST / ELONKORJUU ~ POP LIISA VOL. 05 & VOL. 06 SVART 009 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1976 - 1977 Released: 2016
The "Popstudio" / "Jazzstudio" broadcasts were usually dedicated to one band / artist, but in some cases two acts were combined into one show, which allowed each of them just about twenty minutes to perform, as is the case on these two sessions.
Guitarist / composer Jukka HauruFind albums by this artist appeared already on the "Pop Liisa Vol. 01 & Vol. 02Find albums with this title" album some three years before this recording was captured. In the meantime he released his second album "EpisodeFind albums with this title" (on LoveFind albums on this label Records), but the band playing here was completely different from the crew that recorded the album, except for the violinist Juhani PoutanenFind albums by this artist. The other players are pianist Eero OjanenFind albums by this artist, bassist Tapani TamminenFind albums by this artist, drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist and percussionist Ari ValtonenFind albums by this artist. They perform just one extended instrumental composition by Hauru, a six-part suite, which did not appear on any of his albums, a complex Jazz-Rock Fusion piece featuring lengthy Jazz improvisations.
Guitarist / composer Nono SoderbergFind albums by this artist released his debut album "NonoFind albums with this title" about a year before this recording was captured and two of the pieces from that album, which were composed by him, get expanded renditions here by a band which also includes saxophonist Reijo YlinenFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Esa KotilainenFind albums by this artist, bassist Harri MerilahtiFind albums by this artist, drummer Roope KoistinenFind albums by this artist and percussionist Esa RoswallFind albums by this artist. The music is more conventional Fusion oriented, with melodic themes and some Prog elements as well.
By the time the second broadcast presented here was captured (early 1977), the so called "first wave" of Finnish Progressive Rock / Fusion bands was almost over with Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist already disbanded and WigwamFind albums by this artist about to be disbanded after switching to more Pop oriented music. This gave an opportunity to the "second wave" of Finnish Prog / Fusion bands like those appearing here to capture the scene.
FinnforestFind albums by this artist already had two excellent albums under their belt, the eponymous debut "FinnforestFind albums with this title" from 1975 and the follow up "Lahto MatkalleFind albums with this title" from 1976, both released on Love Records. Founded by the brothers: guitarist Pekka TegelmanFind albums by this artist and drummer Jussi TegelmanFind albums by this artist the band also included keyboardist Pertti PokkiFind albums by this artist and bassist Jarmo HiekkalaFind albums by this artist. They perform two pieces, which did not appear on the released albums, one by Pokki and the other by Jussi Tegelman. The music is strongly Fusion oriented, with some Prog elements present as well.
ElonkorjuuFind albums by this artist had a long history debuting with their album "Harvest TimeFind albums with this title" already in 1972, which was Blues-Rock oriented. Over time they disbanded and created the group again, changing the lineup and musical direction more towards Jazz-Rock Fusion and Funk. The lineup present here includes vocalist Kari TamminenFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Juha UnkilaFind albums by this artist, pianist Pekka TyniFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jukka SyreniusFind albums by this artist, bassist Veli-Pekka PessiFind albums by this artist and drummer Veikko NoutioFind albums by this artist. They perform three songs, all by Syrenius, which showcase the stylistic diversity of their music.

  | FINNFOREST ~ ALPHA TO OMEGA: THE COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS 1973-1980 SVART 056 (Barcode: 6430065585435) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Funk Fusion Recorded: 1973 - 1980 Released: 2018
This is a reissue of the collected studio recordings by the Finnish Progressive Rock / Fusion ensemble FinnforestFind albums by this artist. It includes the remastered versions of the three LPs recorded by Finnforest and released on the legendary LoveFind albums on this label Records label: "FinnforestFind albums with this title" (1975), "Lahto MatkalleFind albums with this title" (1976) and "DemonnightsFind albums with this title" (1979). Additionally two singles, one compilation track and two previously unissued recording sessions, one before the debut album (1973) and another after the last album (1980), are also included. Beautifully packaged and with in depth liner notes this 3 CD set is a proper tribute to this great band.
Finnforest was formed in 1973 by twin brothers Pekka TegelmanFind albums by this artist, who played guitar and Jussi TegelmanFind albums by this artist, who played drums. The early version of the band included also keyboardist Jukka RissanenFind albums by this artist, bassist Jarmo HiekkalaFind albums by this artist and vocalist Ari MustonenFind albums by this artist. This quintet lineup plays on the six early tracks recorded in 1973.
The first album was recorded in Sweden in 1975 just by the trio of Tegelman brothers and Jukka Rissanen. The second album was also recorded in Sweden a year later, and featured the Tegelman brothers, Hiekkala on bass and keyboardist Jukka LinkolaFind albums by this artist, Second keyboardist Pertti PokkiFind albums by this artist plays on two tracks and a string section conducted by Otto DonnerFind albums by this artist plays on one track. The third album was recorded in 1978 and features only Jussi Tegelman from the original lineup and the rest are all new members: keyboardist Jarmo SavolainenFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jari RissanenFind albums by this artist, bassist Tuomo HelinFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist. Pekka Tegelman plays only on some of the tracks. The last session features all new musicians playing with Jussi Tegelman. All the music present on this set, except for one track, was composed by one or the other of the Tegelman brothers.
The early tracks are typical proto-Prog but starting with the tracks on the first album the music becomes absolutely stunning, with complex compositions and lengthy improvisations, slowly moving from Symphonic Prog into Jazz-Rock Fusion, with even more daring and challenging musical excursions.
In retrospect it is clear that Finnforest were one of the most important European Prog groups in the 1970s, creating some of the most exciting music that came out of Finland at the time, despite the fact that they had fierce competition as Finland at the time produced incredible amount of fascinating music. It is great to see these classic albums back in circulation and the bonus tracks are always a welcome incentive. This is definitely a must have for all true Prog and Fusion collectors from around the world.

  | JOE DAVIDOW ~ DIFFERENT MOMENTS – THE MUSIC OF JOE DAVIDOW SVART 068 (Barcode: 6430050668396) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1978 - 1994 Released: 2016
This is an archival album presenting music composed by American (resident in Finland since 1978) pianist / composer / director Joe DavidowFind albums by this artist, recorded between 1978 and 1994 with different ensembles, which featured top Finnish Jazz musicians at the time, like saxophonist Paroni PaakkunainenFind albums by this artist, guitarist Hasse WalliFind albums by this artist, bassists Ilkka HanskiFind albums by this artist and Make LievonenFind albums by this artist, drummers Tom NekludowFind albums by this artist and Reino LaineFind albums by this artist and others. The music was recorded at the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company) studio, except for one track which was recorded at the LoveFind albums on this label Records studio. The album presents ten original compositions, all composed and arranged by Davidow.
The music offers a wide stylistic variety between melodic mainstream Jazz and Avant-Garde Free Form, all bearing Davidow´s personal signature, which combines American Jazz tradition with modern European approach in a highly individual way. It often moves beyond the Jazz idiom into more cinematic vistas, which is hardly surprising considering Davidow´s role as director and composer of cinematic music.
The lasting cooperation between Davidow and Paakkunainen, who appears on all the tracks, discloses an obvious aesthetical proximity between the two. As the primary soloists the two exchange heated dialogues and lyrical laments, always on the same emotional wavelength.
Davidow´s piano playing, which is quite idiosyncratic, adds a unique color to the proceedings, as he is hardly an average Jazz player, often playing completely "against the rules", and always keeping faithful to his personal style.
The various rhythm sections consistently do a great job accompanying the saxophone / piano duo, regardless of the stylistic environment utilized on each of the tracks. Those are after all seasoned veterans, able to play anything and always finding the required mindset.
Considering the fact that this is the first time this music appears on record, this is a true gem and source of enjoyment, not to mention its historical significance. This album is therefore an absolutely essential piece of Finnish Jazz history and deserves to be heard!

  | VARIOUS ARTISTS ~ ETEENPAIN! – COMPLETE 1966-1970 SVART 075 (Barcode: 6430050669331) ~ FINLAND ~ Special Products Recorded: 1966 - 1970 Released: 2016
This fabulous Box Set presents a reissue of the complete output by the independent / underground Finnish record label Eteenpain!Find albums on this label (Eng. Forward!), founded in 1966 by musicologist / author Pekka GronowFind albums by this artist and singer / songwriter M. A. NumminenFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. Mauri Antero NumminenFind albums by this artist) in order to present mainly the eclectic and prolific recordings by Numminen, but also many other recordings. In addition to all the releases this collection was expanded to include also unreleased material from the label´s vaults.
Eteenpain! was one of the first independent European record labels and its releasing policy was definitely most eclectic and plainly "wild" in every respect. As a result the music including in this Box Set includes a completely nutty mixture styles and genres, including Folk, Pop, Rock, Blues, Jazz, Avant-Garde Rock, comedy, parody and even songs in Esperanto language. Such wonderful diversity and openness characterized of course the 1960s and could have happened only then, with complete disregard of public opinion or commercial considerations.
By the end of the 1960s the label slowly run out of steam as a result in the changes in the local music industry and social structure / cultural climate. By 1970 the label owners called it quits and the recording archives were passed to the other legendary Finnish record label LoveFind albums on this label Records (also founded in 1966), which occasionally used some of it in their releases. Following Love Records bankruptcy in 1979 the archives returned back to Numminen.
This Box Set is a wonderful document of an era long gone, where Avant-Garde / underground Culture was flourishing and was able to find dedicated support, which enabled its creative output to be published, which today is of course implausible. There are certain parallels between Eteenpain! and the New York ESPFind albums on this label record label founded in 1963 by Bernard StollmanFind albums by this artist, however as much as Stollman´s openness and vision were of course extraordinary, especially in America, his label was relatively more "conservative" in the choice of material in comparison to the wonderful weirdness that characterized what Gronow and Numminen were doing.
Overall this Box Set is a superb document, not only of the music but more importantly of the Cultural climate of the late 1960s in Finland and beyond. Kudos are due to SvartFind albums on this label Records for undertaking this mammoth project and their dedication to preserve Culture.

They are often compared to the legendary Finnish group PiirpaukeFind albums by this artist, who pioneered the local Jazz-World Fusion idiom.

Their lineup went through several changes and the live radio broadcast was recorded by vocalist Jukka SalmelaFind albums by this artist, organist Jarno SinisaloFind albums by this artist, guitarist Heikki SilvennoinenFind albums by this artist, bassist Tapio SuominenFind albums by this artist and drummer Jukka AronenFind albums by this artist. They perform just two lengthy versions of songs from their second album, composed by Silvennoinen and Sinisalo, both featuring excellent instrumental work.
Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for Classic Rock, Brass Rock and Prog-heads this is an absolute must have!

  | SUKELLUSVENE ~ VESI- JA LINTUMUSIIKKIA SVART 106 (Barcode: 6430065585176) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1978 Released: 2018
This is a reissue of the only album by the Finnish Jazz / Fusion sextet SukellusveneFind albums by this artist, which comprised of saxophonist Lassi TalasmoFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Kari LitmanenFind albums by this artist, guitarists Jukka MakinenFind albums by this artist and Tapani TuomanenFind albums by this artist, bassist Pekka MuhliFind albums by this artist and drummer Timo KotinevaFind albums by this artist. The album, released on the legendary LoveFind albums on this label Records, presented six original compositions, two each by Litmanen and Tuomanen and one each by Makinen and Muhli. This remastered and expanded edition adds two tracks from a single with non-LP tracks.
Although established in the early 1970s, it took the group almost eight years to record their album, following several lineup changes, and it sadly disbanded soon after. Nevertheless this sole album remains as one of the finest Finnish Fusion recordings of the 1970s, and lost nothing of its charm over the years. Full of superb compositions and fiery performances it is a true gem of the period and a wonderful testament of the incredible Finnish musical scene that flourished at the time.
Although obviously Fusion oriented and with a distinct Fusion sound due to the use of synthesizers, guitars and electric bass, it offers also a lot of Jazz spirit within the improvisations and Progressive Rock tendencies reflected in the melodic approach. As such this music is highly attractive to a wide range of music connoisseurs with cross-genre tendencies.
Overall this is a wonderful piece of Finnish Jazz / Fusion history, well worth being remembered and still a great piece of quality music. Warmly recommended and an absolute must to European Jazz enthusiasts. As usual kudos to SvartFind albums on this label Records for saving this gem from oblivion!

  | AKE ANDERSSON / ANTERO HONKANEN ~ REIDARIN SAHKOISET KUVAT SVART 129 (Barcode: 6430065584483) ~ FINLAND ~ Electronic & Ambient Recorded: 1975 - 1976 Released: 2018
This is a reissue of a wonderful and pretty obscure album, originally released on the legendary LoveFind albums on this label Records, by two Finnish electronic music pioneers Ake AnderssonFind albums by this artist and Antero HonkanenFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, four each by the two team members and this is the first time this music appears on CD.
Andersson and Honkanen were both studio technicians at the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company) and were in charge of producing a myriad of soundtracks used by the radio in its various programs. They decided to create an album of electronic music, based on the paintings by Reidar SarestoniemiFind albums by this artist. The music accompanied an exhibition of Sarestoniemi´s works, which was heard by Otto DonnerFind albums by this artist, the producer / co-owner of Love Records, who decided to release the music on an album.
In retrospect this music sounds every bit as innovative and fresh as it did at the time of its recordings. Using a mixture of synthesizers, electronic devices and acoustic instruments the team managed to create a wide spectrum of sound vistas, which although lack strict melodic themes, make an aesthetic emotional impact based on pure sound variations.
The fact that the music was released at the time speaks volumes about the role of Love Records in shaping the landscape of Finnish Culture and the openness of the label´s owners to all genres of music, as well as the sparkling diversity of the local music scene. Therefore this album is a superb document of the vitality of 1970s, which marked a rapid emancipation of the Finnish music from its earlier relative "provinciality". This is definitely a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

  | TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI ~ LAMBERTLAND SVART 250 (Barcode: 6430065588511) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1972 Released: 2019
This is a reissue of the third album by the seminal Finnish Jazz-Rock Fusion / Progressive Rock group Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist (Eng. President of the Republic). This album was recorded in Finland and Sweden (vocals only) and originally released internationally on SonetFind albums on this label Records and locally on LoveFind albums on this label Records.
The group was founded in 1969 by two ex-members of the group Blues SectionFind albums by this artist: bassist / keyboardist Mans GroundstroemFind albums by this artist and British vocalist Frank RobsonFind albums by this artist and two members of HelpFind albums by this artist (led by vocalist Eero RaittinenFind albums by this artist): drummer Vesa AaltonenFind albums by this artist and guitarist Jukka TolonenFind albums by this artist and finally a seasoned saxophonist / flautist Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist, Vesa´s brother, who was a member of SoulsetFind albums by this artist. The group recorded their debut album the same year, which was one of the earliest releases on the absolutely legendary Finnish Love Records (catalog number LRLP 7), the home of the dazzling Finish music of the late 1960s and 1970s, which released an astonishing catalog of almost 400 LPs.
By the time this album was recorded Juhani Aaltonen left to be replaced by another superb saxophone / flute player Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist and so did Frank Robson, who was replaced by Eero Raittinen (see above). Tolonen, who started to develop a successful solo career and released his debut album "Tolonen!Find albums with this title" in 1971 (also on Sonet), became the group´s resident composer and wrote almost all the music on this album, except for one piece, which was composed by Poyry. The album presented six extended tracks, two of which were instrumentals. The lyrics were written by bassist Mats HuldenFind albums by this artist, founding member of WigwamFind albums by this artist, "the other" seminal Finnish Prog supergroup at the time. This expanded edition adds the two sides of the band´s single as bonus tracks.
The music is classic Progressive Rock of the period, with complex compositions often combining several themes into a single musical piece. The vocal parts are relatively limited and most of the music is devoted to instrumental improvisations, with a strong Jazzy influence, which continues the Jazz-Rock element of the earlier albums. Tolonen and Poyry offer plenty of bloodcurdling soloing, which remains completely relevant to this very day. In retrospect this album stands out as one of the finest achievements of the European Prog in early 1970s, before the genre lost most of its steam and originality in the years that followed.
For lovers of early European Jazz-Rock Fusion and Progressive Rock this is an absolute gem and a must in any serious music collection of that period. Thanks to the great Finnish SvartFind albums on this label Records for their fantastic job of keeping the Finnish musical legacy alive.

  | TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI ~ TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI (II) SVART 298 (Barcode: 6430065588535) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Blues Fusion Recorded: 1970 Released: 2019
This is a reissue of the second album by the seminal Finnish Jazz-Rock Fusion / Progressive Rock group Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist (Eng. President of the Republic). This album, same as the debut, was also eponymous and therefore its title is often supplemented with (II) to distinguish between the two. This album was recorded in Sweden and originally released on Swedish EMIFind albums on this label in hope of exposing the group to a wider European audience.
By the time this album was recorded Juhani Aaltonen left to be replaced by another superb saxophone / flute player Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine original tunes, eight of which feature lyrics (in English) by Robson. The music was composed by Groundstroem, Tolonen and Robson or co-composed by all members of the group.
The music is absolutely stunning and every bit as good as the best efforts produced at the time in the UK. With a big heavy sound, obvious Blues influence and featuring wicked flute solos it resembles the early albums by Jethro TullFind albums by this artist and many other proto Jazz-Rock Fusion and Progressive bands of the era. Robson´s expressive vocals and English accent make this music sound as if produced by a British group, which enabled Tasavallan Presidentti to tour the UK several times, where I heard and met them for the first time.
The unique combination of extraordinary instrumental abilities and sublime songwriting, which was about to explode on their next album "LambertlandFind albums with this title" made Tasavallan Presidentti one of the unforgettable and iconic bands in Finnish music history, which in its entirety remains one of the greatest hidden treasures of the European music scene.
For lovers of early European Jazz-Rock Fusion and Progressive Rock this is an absolute gem and a must in any serious music collection of that period. Thanks to the great Finnish SvartFind albums on this label Records for their fantastic job of keeping the Finnish musical legacy alive.

  | TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI ~ LIVE IN LAMBERTLAND SVART 387 (Barcode: 6430065588559) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1972 Released: 2019
This is an archival album by the seminal Finnish Jazz-Rock Fusion / Progressive Rock group Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist (Eng. President of the Republic). This material was recorded live on three separate occasions in the summer of 1972, after the album "LambertlandFind albums with this title" was recorded in the studio in the spring of that year, and offers mostly renditions of the material from that album except for one composition originating from the debut alum by the guitarist (see below). The recordings were done by the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company), which similarly to the BBC has bottomless archives of absolutely sensational material recorded over the years, which offers an amazing opportunity to hear past treasures, usually captured with a superb sound quality. All the material on this 2CD album was previously unissued.
The lyrics were written by bassist Mats HuldenFind albums by this artist, founding member of WigwamFind albums by this artist, "the other" seminal Finnish Prog supergroup at the time.
The music, as usual with live recordings, offers much more expanded versions of the studio material, which feature long and complex instrumental improvisations, and as a result bring this music closer to the Jazz-Rock Fusion idiom than the original album´s Progressive Rock ambience. The strong Jazzy influence is more obvious and allows Tolonen and Poyry to produce plenty of bloodcurdling soloing, superbly supported by the rhythm section and even the vocal parts feature some wordless vocalese. Overall this music is a splendid example what this group was capable off at their absolute best.
For lovers of early European Jazz-Rock Fusion and Progressive Rock this is an absolute gem and a must in any serious music collection of that period. Thanks to the great Finnish SvartFind albums on this label Records for their fantastic job of keeping the Finnish musical legacy alive.
