  | OLLI AHVENLAHTI ~ THE POET LOVE 168 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz
Recorded just a year later (1976) after his debut album, this album continues where the previous one left off. Ahvenlahti wrote all the music and the beautiful arrangements. The trumpet player is now the Finn Markku JohanssonFind albums by this artist and the line up was extended to a nonet, including the master sax player Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, Bertil StrandbergFind albums by this artist on trombone and a couple of percussion players. This expanded line-up allows for more advanced brass arrangements and more soloing by the players. The mood is still very “cool”, with gorgeous melodies and pulsating rhythms. In years the album has become a classic and young Finnish jazz musicians studied it as a model for their own jazz development. Thirty years after it was recorded, this sound today every bit as fresh and inspiring as it was at the time of its release. A must!

This is an archival album collecting all the recordings by Finnish keyboardist / composer Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist recorded with the superb UMOFind albums by this artist Jazz Orchestra for the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company). The album presents fifteen tracks, including the five-part "Seawinds" suite, which gave the album its title. All the music was composed and arranged by Ahvenlahti.
UMO, founded in 1975, turned out to be Finland´s most renowned Jazz Big Band / Orchestra, active to this very day. Over the years its ranks included the absolute who’s who of the Finnish Jazz scene, as well as numerous international guests, and produced a remarkable recording legacy.
On these recordings the UMO was in its early days, but already offered a remarkable level of professionalism and talent, as well as a typical European approach to the Big Band Jazz sound and style. It included such formidable players as saxophonists Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist, Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, Juhani AaltonenFind albums by this artist, Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist and Paroni PaakkunainenFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Kaj BacklundFind albums by this artist, trombonist Mircea StanFind albums by this artist, pianist Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist, bassists Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist and Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist, drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist and many others. Ahvenlahti played keyboards and the orchestra was conducted by Esko LinnavalliFind albums by this artist. Three of the tracks feature the wonderful vocalist Irina MilanFind albums by this artist, singing music composed to Finnish poetry.
The music is beautifully melodic and at the same time complex enough to keep the listener on his toes. The superb Big Band arrangements and wonderful soloing turns this album into an excellent listening experience, which is fresh and full of youthful energy with a slight Fusion tinge. All the sections of the Big Band are perfectly utilized to create a big sound, but the listener is able to hear each individual; instrument. The excellent rhythm section drives the music forward with zest and elegance.
Overall this is a great Big Band Jazz album that lost nothing of its power and freshness over time and sounds every bit as exciting as it did at the time of the recording. For European Big Band Jazz fans this is a true feast and for the many UMO followers around the world this is an absolute must have. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | ALVARADO / KOIVISTOINEN / TUOMARILA ~ ALMA SVART 208 (Barcode: 6430065588023) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2018 - 2019 Released: 2019
This is a wonderful album by a trio which puts together Argentinean Tango vocalist Martin AlvaradoFind albums by this artist and two Finnish Jazz Masters: saxophonist / composer Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist and pianist / composer Alexi TuomarilaFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven songs, five composed by Koivistoinen and two by Tuomarila, all with lyrics by Alvarado, one by Alvarado and three come from other sources.
The music is a very authentic Jazz-World Fusion adventure, combining the Tango characteristics with Jazzy accompaniment, not trying to sound overtly related to any of the genres but rather creating a new amalgam. The original compositions by both the Finns manage successfully to create a Tango subtext, but also venture into other idioms, like Blues and Latin music.
The intimate setting creates a special ambience, where the vocals and the saxophone / piano accompaniment compliment each other very tightly, presenting plenty of opportunities for solo parts by both instruments, both executed perfectly. Koivistoinen, despite his age, sounds vital and creative, as if untouched by the tides of time, which hopefully will continue for many years to come.
Overall this is a very unique and beautiful project, splendidly executed and reverberating the idea of cross-genre pollination. Argentinean Tango was always spiritually close to Jazz, as already demonstrated by the pioneering work of Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist, and the many fans of this kind of musical bridge will find this album certainly worthy of their attention.

  | DAY IS OVER ~ DAY IS OVER SVART 051 (Barcode: 6430065585169) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1975 Released: 2018
This is a reissue of the only album by one-off Finnish-Danish Jazz quintet Day Is OverFind albums by this artist, which comprised of Finnish saxophonist Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Esko LinnavalliFind albums by this artist and drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist and Danish trumpeter Allan BotschinskyFind albums by this artist and bassist Niels-Henning Orsted PedersenFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, one each by Koivistoinen, Linnavalli and Orsted Pedersen and the rest by other Finnish Jazz composers.
The quintet was formed during the Finnish Jazz Music Workshop, which was organized to prepare the legendary UMOFind albums by this artist Orchestra / Big Band in late 1974 and the album was recorded in February 1975 in Stockholm. Linnavalli commissioned the compositions for the album from several leading Finnish Jazz composers at the time and the musicians were exposed to the music without having time to rehearse it – the remarkable result proves the remarkable level of professionalism and talent by all the participants. Of course Orsted Pedersen was already one of the most revered and sought after bass players in Europe, playing and recording with all visiting American Jazz stars.
The music is all strictly melody based modern mainstream Jazz, but it has a distinct Scandinavian touch and the compositions reflect the unique Finnish music spirit, which can be heard distinctly on the recordings originating in the 1970s. The performances are brilliant from start to finish and offer a great opportunity to hear the brilliant work by Orsted Pedersen, who firmly keeps the music swinging smoothly.
Sadly the quintet disbanded as quickly as it was formed, leaving this sole album as its only recorded legacy. However, the UMO Orchestra was formed a few months after the Day Is Over adventure, and exists to this very day, producing some of the finest music out there.
Overall this is a wonderful piece of Finnish (and Nordic) Jazz history, well worth being remembered and still a great piece of quality enjoyable music. Warmly recommended!

  | EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ 3RD VERSION PORTER 1511 (Barcode: 656605793429) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1973 Released: 2010
Finland, the tiny Northern European country of ancient vast forest and crystal clear lakes is rarely ever considered, on the global scale of things, as a source of music. Some classical music connoisseurs might be familiar with the works of Finnish National composer Jean SibeliusFind albums by this artist, whose exquisite symphonies, concerti and suites are amongst the finest music ever written on this planet, but as far as Jazz, Rock or even Pop are concerned, only a minuscule group of people outside the country´s borders is aware of their existence and even fewer of their quality and significance. However, from the strictly statistical point of view, when calculated per capita, the number of bands, orchestras, choirs, composers, performers and records released in the country is calculated; Finland easily tops the list of countries. When one adds to that the highly developed musical schooling system and the open-mindedness of the Finns, who always welcome not only their own music, but any music from around the globe, it becomes quite clear that Finland, against all odds, is probably the most musical country in the word?
Finnish Jazz, which goes back in its history well before WWII and continuously developed over the years, is one of Finland´s most surprising and outstanding musical achievements. The post WWII generation of Finnish Jazz musicians was among the first to join the radical emancipation of European Jazz from the shackles of American conservatism and stagnation, developing themselves and with other European Jazz musicians a new Jazz idiom; based in the tradition and basic principles of improvisation, but also expanding the genre by incorporating elements of classical music and European folklore. These, mostly well educated players, who had a broader overall picture of music as an Art Form, turned Jazz into a highly intellectual, sophisticated and complex form of expression, which perhaps lacked some of the spontaneity and frivolity of their American counterparts, but definitely added other, not less essential elements, like elegance, multi-level and often poly-rhythmic approach and above all a much more delicate sense of melody, even if the music itself was sometimes completely free or spontaneously improvised.
Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist (born 1946) ranks among the finest of Finnish Jazz musicians and is certainly one of the forefathers of modern Jazz in his country. Active on the scene since the mid-1960s, he was a member of the legendary Rock group Blues SectionFind albums by this artist and since the end of 1960s led his own Jazz ensembles. He was also one of the first Finnish musicians to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He also cooperated closely with the UMO Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist, certainly one of the finest Jazz orchestras in the world, serving as its artistic director in the late 1990s. The complete list of his achievements is truly amazing.
Koivistoinen´s recording career as a leader began in 1968 with the recording of his first album "ValtakuntaFind albums with this title", a beautiful literary work based on poems by famous Finnish poets. This kind of Jazz & Poetry works is quite popular in Finland and the Finnish Jazz discography list many such efforts, another proof of the overall approach to music as part of culture in general. "3rd Version", his 7th album as a leader, finds Koivistoinen in the company of other excellent Finnish musicians: pianist Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jukka TolonenFind albums by this artist, bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist (Heikki´s brother) and drummer Reino LaineFind albums by this artist. American drummer Craig HerndonFind albums by this artist, a member of Sarmanto´s group and an old friend from the Boston days, also plays on the album. Except for Tolonen, who is mostly associated with Jazz-Rock Fusion due to his history as a member of the legendary Finnish bands Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist and WigwamFind albums by this artist, the rest of the players are all pillars of the Finnish modern Jazz scene and all are virtuosi on their respective instruments.
Of the four lengthy tracks on the album, three were composed by Koivistoinen and one by Heikki Sarmanto. The music could be generally categorized as Fusion, but this is the European strain of Fusion, devoid of needless and endless doodling, with every moment contributing a new vista to the music. There is also a strong Latin feel to the album, with Cuban and other Latin rhythmic patters used often. The performances are of course stellar, as can be expected from such formidable participants. The solos are well structured and flow effortlessly, always faithfully supported by the fellow musicians. Koivistoinen´s saxophone (tenor, soprano and sopranino) sounds clear and eloquent at all times, soaring and diving like a bird. Sarmanto´s keyboards work is stunning, always elegant and flawless, his brother´s bass lines, steady as a rock and chronometer and yet playful and imaginative, are breathtaking.
It is truly a blessing to have this music available again, after years of neglect and lingering. Leaving it aside to be forgotten is simply a crime against culture! Thank God for PorterFind albums on this label Records, which finally makes this music available again to the general music-loving public, as they already did with other Finnish albums, hoping this splendid effort will be continued in the future. There is still so much music waiting to be unearthed. Side Note The above are my liner notes included on this album's artwork.
I am honored when asked by the Artists to write liner notes for their albums, always hoping that my words reflect the true spirit of the music. This is also a symbol of our mutual respect and friendship developed over the years.
The same is also true when Record Labels ask me to write liner notes for their releases, mostly in the case of reissues of archival albums, which is a symbol of their appreciation of my knowledge and historical perspective and my recognition of their dedication to the preservation of the history of recorded music and the effort to keep human Culture and Aesthetics alive.

The music is all within the modern mainstream Jazz tradition, showcasing Koivistoinen’s brilliant composing / arranging skills and superb performances by some of the best American Jazz musicians active at the time.
Koivistoinen’s ties with American Jazz go back in time to the years spent at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he absorbed the knowledge he would brilliantly utilize during his future career. He always showed a deep respect towards the American Jazz tradition, but at the same time presented a highly individual voice, which went beyond the boundaries of that tradition and incorporated European musical values and his native Finnish influences, turning him into one of the most versatile and prominent European Jazz personalities, as the music included here brilliantly exemplifies.
It is of course great to see these two important albums expanded and made available again, thanks to the exemplary work done by SvartFind albums on this label Records, which treats the Finnish musical treasures with the respect they deserve, preserving the Cultural values, which are perhaps more important today than ever, in these dark days.

  | EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ DIVERSITY SVART 336 (Barcode: 6430050661618) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2021 Released: 2022
This is the third album by Finnish saxophonist / composer / bandleader Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist recorded with his current quartet, which offers a steady lineup for the last decade and includes the outstanding pianist Alexi TuomarilaFind albums by this artist, bassist Jori HuhtalaFind albums by this artist and drummer Jussi LehtonenFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight original compositions, all by the leader.
The music offers a wide range of contemporary modern Jazz, mostly within the mainstream idiom, but brilliantly showcasing the diversity (as the title suggests) of the genre. The elaborately melodic base, which characterizes Koivistoinen’s career now entering its seventh decade, is always beautifully crafted and offers an ideal vehicle for the quartet members to improvise and express their inventiveness and virtuosity.
Completely in disregard of his age, Koivistoinen still displays strong, vigorous saxophone parts, which easily match the energy and vitality of the younger members of the quartet. Tuomarila is by now an established musical figure on the international scene and his piano playing sparkles with elegance and sophistication. The rhythm section is superbly synchronized with the two soloists and for the entire duration offers a perfect support, as well as impressive solo inserts.
Koivistoinen, who is one of the founding Fathers of Finnish Jazz, manages to stay prolifically active, relevant and still mostly unmatched on the local scene, which of course is an absolutely remarkable phenomenon in every respect. His recorded legacy to date is a wonderful example of the best in European Jazz, which although strongly rooted in American Jazz tradition, successfully integrates European ingredients, creating a perfect hybrid.
Overall, this is another masterpiece in the extensive collective work by Koivistoinen as composer, player and bandleader, which is a living proof of the ingenuity of our generation, proudly serving as an example to the future music makers. Thank you for this wonderful music, my Friend!

  | EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ HATI HATI SVART 352 (Barcode: 6430050663032) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2012 Released: 2014
This is the debut album by a quartet led by Finnish Jazz Giant, saxophonist / composer Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist with three representatives of the younger generation of the Finnish Jazz scene: pianist Alexi TuomarilaFind albums by this artist, bassist Jori HuhtalaFind albums by this artist and drummer Jussi LehtonenFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight tunes, seven of which are original compositions by Koivistoinen and one is an arrangement of a Bob DylanFind albums by this artist song.
During a career that lasts for over five decades Koivistoinen amassed an incredible legacy of music. As one of the founding Fathers of Finnish Jazz he continuously performed, recorded, led ensembles, and toured both locally and internationally, in short was and still is "Mr. Jazz" in the best and most accurate meaning of the term. He always combined the two most vital qualities essential for a great Jazz musician: a superb and very personal technique and a very personal, instantly recognizable compositional skill. Consistently and marvelously Koivistoinen established his position as one of the leading world-class post-Coltrane saxophonists over the years, and his playing lost absolutely nothing of its fluency, vitality and most importantly that incredible "coolness" which makes him stand apart from most other players.
This album is a superb example of melodic Modern Jazz, which flows gently from one tune to the next completely naturally and coherently. Koivistoinen´s compositions are all absolute gems, each and every one of them immediately deserving a status of a standard. Since the very early days he always managed to amaze me time after time with the gorgeousness of his tunes and the ones present here are no exception. Of course great tunes are basis of everything in Jazz, which this album demonstrates repeatedly.
The saxophone performances are also stunning and stellar, with a wonderful natural flow and lucidity. Even when the improvisations become complex and dense, they sound absolutely melodic and crystal clear. Careful listening reveals the entire Jazz tradition, which Koivistoinen´s playing is based on, and yet he remains completely original and always full of imagination. It is not surprising that for me Koivistoinen is one of the absolute top active world saxophone players and hopefully this will continue to be the case in years to come. The fact that Koivistoinen is first and foremost Finnish and European, which forged his musical personality and allowed it not to be overwhelmed by the American Jazz tradition, creating a wonderful amalgam of European elegance and taste with the original American spirit of the idiom.
Over the years Finland continuously produces wave after wave of extremely talented and creative musicians, including those active on the Jazz scene. Therefore it is not surprising that the younger players on this album are all masters of their trade. Tuomarila, who is naturally given a greater exposure, is an absolutely wonderful pianist, with exceptional sense of melody and fluidity, which turns his solos into micro masterpieces. Huhtala supports the music solidly and with a great sense of harmony. Lehtonen takes a very conservative approach trying to be as much respectfully unobtrusive as possible, which in case of this rather soft and delicate music is the best approach.
Overall this is a stunningly beautiful album, full of exquisite music and stellar performances, as always in the case of anything Koivistoinen is involved with. His many fans will find this album a worthy continuation of his splendid legacy and those who are not familiar with the Master, will perhaps be caught in the net of his magic notes. Thank you Eero for making this great music, which is able to make us smile again!

  | EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ ILLUSION SVART 124 (Barcode: 6430065582939) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2012 - 2015 Released: 2017
This is the second album by a quartet led by Finnish Jazz Giant, saxophonist / composer Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist with three representatives of the younger generation of the Finnish Jazz scene: pianist Alexi TuomarilaFind albums by this artist, bassist Jori HuhtalaFind albums by this artist and drummer Jussi LehtonenFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tunes, six of which are original compositions by Koivistoinen and one is a standard, which originates from an earlier recording session from 2012 that produced the debut album "Hati HatiFind albums with this title". The six new recordings were the last ones recorded at the legendary M1 Studio of the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company) which witnessed numerous Jazz albums being recorded there during its existence.
The music, as expected, is a wonderful collection of sublimely melodic tunes, which Koivistoinen manages to weave times and time again with his usual natural heartfelt elegance. As a composer Koivistoinen is absolutely untouched by the tides of time and his compositions are as vigorous, full of joy, energy and harmony as they were through his entire career.
The quartet performs also every bit as expected, with Koivistoinen saxophone soaring over the background supplied by the rhythm section, in a typical barrage of notes which characterizes the Modern Jazz post-Coltrane school, which he always represented faithfully. Tuomarila displays his incredible fluency and technique, which spark the quartet´s overall sound significantly. Huhtala and Lehtonen solidly provide the rhythmic pulsations and since this album features more up-tempo numbers that the debut, they are heard much more prominently. Overall this quartet´s performances are the epitome of what modern mainstream Jazz is all about – great tunes perfectly executed by talented and highly professional musicians, who have to ability to state something personal and original rather than imitating the past.
For mainstream Jazz lovers this album is an instant classic, which should satisfy even the most experienced connoisseurs. Just grab a copy ASAP and enjoy – satisfaction guaranteed!

  | EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ LABYRINTH (40TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION) SVART 435 (Barcode: 6430065581413) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1977 Released: 2017
This is a reissue of an iconic album by one of the Godfathers of modern Finnish Jazz, saxophonist / composer / bandleader Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, which was his second release on the legendary LoveFind albums by this artist Records label. The album was recorded in a classic Jazz quartet setting with Russian born pianist Vladimir ShafranovFind albums by this artist, bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist and drummer Reino LaineFind albums by this artist. The original album presents eight tracks, three of which are parts of the suite that gave the album its title. This remastered and expanded 2CD edition adds an entire second CD of alternate takes and outtakes, more than doubling the playing time of original LP.
Koivistoinen´s music embraced a stunning stylistic diversity, which crossed genres and idioms from Free Jazz to Jazz-Rock Fusion, Progressive Rock, Jazz & Poetry, children´s songs, World Music and others. His biography, recorded legacy and list of achievements are truly remarkable and can serve as an example of excellence and inspiration.
This album presents him as a classic modern mainstream Master, a post-Coltrane virtuoso, as well as a weaver of beautiful, soulful melodic themes, which are ideal vehicles for extended improvisations. The superb musicians playing with him are able to support his soloing ideally, with amazing piano accompaniment and soloing by Shafranov and a most sympathetic and elegant work by the rhythm section.
This edition enables the listener to compare the originally selected takes with the alternate takes, which offer a myriad of subtle differences, slight tempo changes and other variations, which are of course characteristic of the process of recording a Jazz album, with each take capturing a unique creative moment.
In retrospect this album stands out as one of the finest Finnish Jazz recordings of all time, an absolute classic which lost nothing of its power of expression and timeless beauty over time. It definitely earned a "must have" status for any serious Finnish / European Jazz collection and this expanded edition is even more deserving. Absolutely essential!
Koivistoinen is still active today and seems to be as creative as ever, which is awe inspiring. I can only wish you many more years of activity and heath, my Friend!

This is a reissue of a delightful and little known Jazz & Poetry project (this time intended for children) by Finnish composer / saxophonist Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist who wrote the music to poems by Finnish poetess Kirsi KunnaksenFind albums by this artist. This remastered edition offers also the texts of the poems and exact lineup of all the tracks as well as a nice (bilingual) article about the whole project.
Although obviously not a bona fide Jazz project, this album is a great document of Koivistoinen openness and diversity as a musician and composer. Exposing young children to quality music is a crucial part of their Cultural education, a fact that is almost completely neglected today with children being fed absolute infantile rubbish in the media. This album, almost fifty years old, is better and more challenging than most of what passes al children´s music today.
In retrospect this stuff sounds fresh and exciting today, completely contemporary. Even listeners not familiar with the Finnish language should be able to enjoy these fabulous musical stories and get intuitively what they are all about.
Overall this is a wonderful example of the ingenuity of Koivistoinen and the entire Finnish Jazz scene at the time, full of love and understanding of the young souls. Still delightful!

  | EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ THE FRONT IS BREAKING LOVE 188 ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1976
Apart from Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist, Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist is probably the most well known Finnish jazz musician outside of his native country, due to his US residency and numerous recordings around the world. Deeply influenced by John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, he started his jazz adventure playing free jazz in cahoots with Edward Vesala and Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist as early as 1964 (which was about the time European free jazz was developing fiercely). Later on he moved away from free jazz and concentrated more on structured and carefully composed music. By the time this album was recorded, the jazz world was deeply involved in the Jazz-Rock Fusion explosion, following Miles DavisFind albums by this artist’ pioneering work in the field and later on groups like John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist’s Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist. Inspired by these developments, Koivistoinen decided to record a fusion album, for which he composed the music. The carefully assembled a dreamy combo to record the music, in which he gathered the best Scandinavian musicians from both the jazz and Progressive Rock genres, including Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist (drums) and Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist (piano) – Finland / jazz, Jukka TolonenFind albums by this artist (guitar – Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist) and Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist (bass – WigwamFind albums by this artist) – Finland / Prog and Wlodek GulkowskiFind albums by this artist (keyboards) and Georg WadeniusFind albums by this artist (guitar – Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist) - Sweden (well Gulkowski was a Polish refugee) / Fusion. This was to be the only fusion album Koivistoinen would record, as he returned to “pure” jazz soon after.

  | EERO KOIVISTOINEN ~ THE ORIGINAL SIN SVART 307 (Barcode: 6430077093621) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1971 Released: 2021
"The Original SinFind albums with this title", recorded on August 13, 16 & 23, 1971, was the fourth album released by Finnish saxophonist / composer / arranger Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist. Aged 25 at the time, Koivistoinen was already recognized at the time as a central figure on the burgeoning Finnish Jazz scene.
During his student days at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, one of the first European educational institutions to recognize Jazz as a valid musical Art Form worthy of academic studies, Koivistoinen frequented the Finland´s Capital Jazz club scene, performing at jam sessions. By 1967 he already had his first trio with bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist (brother of pianist / composer Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist) and the legendary drummer Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist, who is often considered as the Godfather of modern Finnish Jazz. The trio played adventurous free-improvised Jazz, being the pioneers of Free Jazz in their country. Sadly, the trio never recorded an album and the only recorded evidence of their performances can be found on a live EP recorded at the Espoo Jazz Festival in 1967.
In 1967 the newly founded Finnish Jazz Federation (FJF), probably the best professional Jazz organization in Europe at the time, selected Koivistoinen as the first recipient of the annual Georgie Award in recognition for his outstanding talents. Two years later Koivistoinen performed for the first time outside of his country´s borders at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland (his performance at Montreux as a member of the International Festival Big Band was recorded and released on PolydorFind albums on this label), winning the festival´s competition for bands, which in turn led to his appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival in the US, exposing his talents on the global scale.
In the early 1970s Koivistoinen continued his studies in Jazz composition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where numerous of his compatriot Jazz musicians also studied over the years, starting with Heikki Sarmanto, who upon his return home brought over the American guitarist Lance GundersonFind albums by this artist who plays on this album. During the 1970s Koivistoinen recorded a stream of exceptional albums, which featured his compositional and arranging skills as well as his brilliant saxophone playing. Constantly re-inventing himself, his music kept changing during this decade and touched upon various Jazz genres, including his pioneering contribution to Jazz-Rock Fusion, but always remaining his very own.
Starting with "ValtakuntaFind albums with this title" (1968) and continuing with "OdysseusFind albums with this title" (1969), "For ChildrenFind albums with this title" (1970), "The Original Sin" (1971), "Muusa Ja RuusaFind albums with this title" (1971), "Wahoo!Find albums with this title" (1972), "3rd VersionFind albums with this title" (1973), "The Front Is BreakingFind albums with this title" (1976), "LabyrinthFind albums with this title" (1977) and finally "Live At The Belmont Jazz ClubFind albums with this title" (1977) Koivistoinen produced a body of work of amazing depth, beauty, sophistication and intellectual significance, which remains as a wonderful illustration of the Finnish and European Jazz heritage during that decade.
However, by the end of the 1970s, the immense popularity, which European Jazz managed to kindle, was gradually losing its steam. Record labels, owned by international mogul corporations, lost interest in any kind of adventurous music, Jazz included, and the number of Jazz releases went down considerably, a situation which affected Finland as well. Undeterred by this turn of events Koivistoinen decided to take matters into his own hands and established in 1983 one of the first musician-owned independent record labels, PROFind albums on this label Records, which enabled him to realize his musical projects.
This album is a deeply significant milestone in Koivistoinen´s musical development, since it presents for the first time the true depth of his compositions as well as his overall musical approach. It is also his first work with a large-scale ensemble, which enables him to utilize his arranging skills to a full extent.
The six compositions present here were recorded by three different lineups; a tentet ("Sinner", "Both & And" and "Rock & Roll"), a septet ("The Original Sin") and a sextet (the remaining two). The tentet comprised of: Eero Koivistoinen – tenor, alto & soprano saxophones, Tapani LuuppolaFind albums by this artist – trumpet, Jussi AaltoFind albums by this artist or Erkki LipponenFind albums by this artist – trombone, Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist – tenor & alto saxophone, Pentti LahtiFind albums by this artist – baritone saxophone, Eero OjanenFind albums by this artist – piano, Lance Gunderson – guitar, Pekka Sarmanto – bass and Reino LaineFind albums by this artist & Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist – drums. The sextet comprised of: Koivistoinen, Ojanen, Gunderson, Sarmanto, Laine and Rosnell and the septet added Unto Haapa-ahoFind albums by this artist on bass clarinet.
Both the music and the performances are absolutely breathtaking, although the album focuses on ensemble playing rather than on extensive soloing, but of course there are still plenty of most impressive solos. An atmosphere of serenity, contemplation and wide-open spaces, typical in Finnish music, prevails even in the up-tempo passages, which turns listening to this album into a most satisfying love affair with music. The fact that it is now almost 50 years old is completely meaningless in this context, where true classics only get better with time.
Thanks to SvartFind albums on this label Records for making this musical treasure available again. Listeners interested in Finnish Jazz legacy are recommended to check out also the other Svart Records reissues documenting this burgeoning period.

  | EERO KOIVISTOINEN WITH FRIENDS ~ JAPPA SVART 373 (Barcode: 6430077093812) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1967 - 1968 Released: 2021
This is a sensational reissue of the one of the modern Finnish Jazz most obscure and sought after recordings, a series of four EPs released originally in 1967/68 by the Jazz Society formed by the students of the Helsinki Polytechnic (now Helsinki University of Technology), who were avid Jazz fans and some of the students were also Jazz musicians.
The album presents all the nineteen tracks, that appeared collectively on these EPs, recorded by different lineups, which featured the absolute crème de la crème of the young generation of Finnish modern Jazz players.
EP 1 presents the earliest recording by saxophonist Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, which also includes bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist and drummer Edward VesalaFind albums by this artist with a percussionist on one track and a couple of cellist on another. They perform three original compositions by Koivistoinen and the music is an example of early Finnish Free Jazz. It precedes the recording of Koivistoinen’s debut album “ValtakuntaFind albums with this title”.
EP 2 presents two original compositions by pianist Pentti HietanenFind albums by this artist, recorded by a septet, which also included trumpeter Kaj BacklundFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Ilkka KrumoFind albums by this artist, Stanley LindroosFind albums by this artist and Paroni PaakkunainenFind albums by this artist, bassist Teppo Hauta-AhoFind albums by this artist and drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist. Both are wonderful example of modern European Jazz with some Free oriented soloing by the participants and superb ensemble work by the septet.
EP 3 presents three tracks, one by saxophonist Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist and two by Koivistoinen. The first is performed by Poyry with pianist Eero OjanenFind albums by this artist, Hauta-Aho and Rosnell. The second is performed by a trio with Koivistoinen, Sarmanto and drummer Reino LaineFind albums by this artist. The third is performed by a quintet with Koivistoinen, Poyry, Ojanen, Sarmanto and Laine. Again, the music is wonderful modern Jazz, brilliantly performed by all the participants.
EP 4 presents eleven short tracks documenting an Art Happening, mostly performed by the Finnish “underground” artist Tommi ParkoFind albums by this artist, who sings and plays a plethora of instruments. He appears solo on the first seven tracks and then is joined by other instrumentalists, including Jazz trumpeter Mike KoskinenFind albums by this artist. These tracks, although only marginally associated with Jazz, reflect the open-mindedness and diversity of the late 1960s.
Overall this is a superb effort by SvartFind albums on this label Records, which returns to life some great music, which deserves to be available for both old and young Finnish Jazz fans.

Saxophonist / composer / bandleader Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist is one of the Godfathers of modern Finnish Jazz with a career spanning six decades and a glorious legacy of recorded music spanning a wide range of stylistic explorations. The live radio broadcast captured here presents Koivistoinen and his quartet: pianist Heikki SarmantoFind albums by this artist (another iconic figure of the Finnish Jazz scene), his brother Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist on bass and drummer Reino LaineFind albums by this artist, hosting the superb Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, who visited Finland at the time. On one track the quintet is expanded to a sextet when joined by the Bulgarian trumpeter Reicho IvanovFind albums by this artist.
They perform five original compositions, two composed by Catherine, and one each by Danish trumpeter Palle MikkelborgFind albums by this artist, Koivistoinen and Ivanov. The music is highly electric (Sarmanto plays electric piano, Catherine electric guitar and even Ivanov plays an electric trumpet – see the Fusion group Eleventh HouseFind albums by this artist led by Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist, which had a similar lineup), which results in a charged Fusion fury, comparable to the best work of Mahavishnu OrchestraFind albums by this artist, and offering some of the finest quality of the genre ever recorded.
I am happy to say that Koivistoinen and Heikki Sarmanto have been my friends since decades and I had the immense pleasure to write liner notes for their albums.
The Nordjazz QuintetFind albums by this artist was a collaborative ensemble combining Jazz musicians from the Nordic countries (as opposed to Scandinavian, which means only Denmark, Norway and Sweden and not Finland and Iceland). The lineup changed over time and the one captured on this live broadcast includes Finnish saxophonist / flautist Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist, Danish pianist Ole Kock HansenFind albums by this artist, Norwegian guitarist Nils Petter NyrenFind albums by this artist, Swedish bassist Kjell JanssonFind albums by this artist and Icelandic drummer Petur OstlundFind albums by this artist.
They perform three original compositions, one composed by Hansen and two composed by Finnish Jazz musicians, both keyboardists / composers, not members of the ensemble: Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist and Jukka LinkolaFind albums by this artist. The music serves as basis for extended improvisations within the Fusion oriented idiom, featuring extensive soloing.
These two sessions are ideally matched together and this CD is definitely one of the strongest and most coherent within the Jazz Liisa series.
Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early to mid 1970s that one is able to hear and for European Jazz connoisseurs this is an absolute must have! Side Note The Finnish independent label SvartFind albums on this label Records released an unprecedented series of albums called Pop Liisa and Jazz Liisa, which present priceless historical recordings of Finnish Rock, Progressive Rock, Jazz-Rock Fusion and Jazz music, recorded live and broadcasted from the Liisankatu Studios in Helsinki under the "Popstudio" and "Jazzstudio" monikers between 1972 and 1977. The studios were owned by the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company), a public broadcasting service, which not only allowed the burgeoning Finnish music scene at the time to be exposed but also carefully archived the recordings for future generations. All this incredible music was previously unissued and collectively is probably the most important document of Finnish music from that period ever assembled.
The music was released on 36 LPs (Pop Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18 and Jazz Liisa Vol. 01 to Vol. 18) and on 18 CDs with every two consecutive volumes combined on one CD.
The sound quality is absolutely superb, often better than the sound quality on the LPs released by these artists at the time. Many of the groups appearing on these albums never managed to record an album and these recordings are the only recorded legacy in existence of their activity. The released are accompanied by well researched and intelligent liner notes.
This archival project is an outstanding example of how Cultural Legacy should be treated as well as of exemplary dedication to record producing professionalism.

  | VESA-MATTI LOIRI ~ 4+20 PORTER 1512 (Barcode: 656605782027) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock-World Fusion Recorded: 1971 Released: 2011
"4 + 20Find albums with this title", recorded during several sessions in March 1971, was the debut album released by Finnish flautist / singer / actor Vesa-Matti LoiriFind albums by this artist. Born January 4, 1945 Loiri was already a "familiar face" on the modern Finnish Jazz scene at the time. Of course it is hard to believe that any of the album´s participants, including Loiri himself, could have possibly imagined that 40 years later he would be considered as one of the central pillars of the Finnish Culture. A true Renaissance man, Loiri developed over the years a spectacular career, both as a musician and as an actor / comedian. He recorded dozens of albums, many of which were immensely popular in his native country. He even represented Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1980, singing a song dedicated to his beloved flute. He also starred in dozens of movies, many of which are considered absolute classics.
Loiri´s musical career is quite diverse, but the most important aspect of it is dedicated to his performances of songs with the lyrics written by the great Finnish poet Eino LeinoFind albums by this artist (1878-1926), the great pioneer of Finnish poetry. Loiri recorded several albums dedicated to Leino´s poetry, all of which are quite extraordinary, both musically and lyrically. Although Loiri was never a Jazz musician per se, he always cooperated on his albums with many Finnish Jazz musicians and many of these albums can be considered as Jazz albums, in a broader sense. The Eino Leino albums, therefore, should be considered as part of the Jazz & Poetry movement, which was quite popular in Europe since the 1960s.
The passionate love affair between Jazz music and Poetry originated during the Beat movement in the 1950s, when US writers and poets discovered that the freedom and improvisational character of modern Jazz could be also utilized in modern writing. The spiritual proximity between the various disciplines of Modern Art & Literature created many cross-media encounters, with Jazz musicians and poets often performing together. In the early 1960s Jazz & Poetry crossed over to Europe, first into UK and then spreading quickly all over the Continent. Jazz musicians and poets created passionate collaborations in France, Germany, Poland and the Scandinavian countries.
But in a similar way as to what happened to American Jazz, when it was absorbed by the Europeans, who amalgamated it with their European musical heritage, Jazz & Poetry also changed, when music was being composed by the Europeans not only to accompany contemporary literary works, but also Classic literature and poetry, as far back as Shakespeare´s sonnets. European Jazz musicians / composers often created music to accompany literary works from their National heritage, similar in a way to the inspirations of the European Romantic Classical composers earlier on. In Finland the Jazz & Poetry movement produced some extraordinary achievements and many of the country´s most illustrious musicians were involved with it at least at some stage of their career.
Vesa-Matti Loiri´s contributions to the movement are surely amongst the most important ones. On the gatefold cover of the "4 + 20" LP Vesa-Matti Loiri writes as follows: "This record was made spontaneously, without any great preparations. It is not meant to serve commercial purposes. This music has risen from friendship." This is in fact a concise and completely truthful description of this album. The album features Loiri the flute player. His vocal contributions here are mostly accidental and humorous (his comedian nature), except for one track, where he actually sings. For the recording he invited a group of friends, which in retrospect reads like the who´s who of Finnish Jazz at the time: saxophonist / flautist Esa PethmanFind albums by this artist (who plays piccolo flute here), saxophonist Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, organist Tuomo TanskaFind albums by this artist, guitarist Hasse WalliFind albums by this artist (who also helped Loiri with most of the arrangements), bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist and drummer Esko RosnellFind albums by this artist. Several other players contribute percussion and vocal tidbits. The music is very versatile and ranges from Jazz via Folklore to Rock and even Classical. A couple of Herbie MannFind albums by this artist´s tunes – an obvious choice by a flautist, some folklore, both international and Finnish, some Rock and some "serious" music (see below), all arranged in a Jazzy fashion and performed joyously yet somewhat informally, as indicated by Loiri´s quote. Nevertheless there are plenty of great solos here and the overall level of performance is definitely outstanding.
The album´s title is of course the Stephen StillsFind albums by this artist´ tune, first heard on the Crosby, Stills, Nash & YoungFind albums by this artist legendary "Déjà VuFind albums with this title" album. It is used here as a repeated "theme", appearing repeatedly between the tracks. The album´s most interesting track, which is the song "Itkevä Huilu", featuring Loiri´s vocals, is a clear precursor of his future Jazz & Poetry work. The song´s lyrics were written by the Finnish poet Larin KyöstiFind albums by this artist and the music by the great Finnish Classical composer Oskar MerikantoFind albums by this artist. Overall the music on this album is conserved, as in a time capsule, losing nothing of its joy and playfulness, good nature and musical friendship. Such qualities should definitely be preserved! Thanks to PorterFind albums on this label Records for making this musical treasure available again!

This is a wonderful Jazz & Poetry album by Finnish vocalist Irina MilanFind albums by this artist recorded with a formidable team of Finnish Jazz musicians headed by saxophonist / composer Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, who composed and arranged all the music, and including also pianist Seppo KantonenFind albums by this artist, bassist Pekka SarmantoFind albums by this artist, drummer Jukkis UotilaFind albums by this artist and percussionist Mongo AaltonenFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight songs, seven based on poems by the French poet Charles BaudelaireFind albums by this artist and one by another French poet Maxime Du CampFind albums by this artist, all translated into Finnish language.
The music is absolutely stunning and one of my favorite Koivistoinen´s creations in his extensive recorded legacy. Despite the time, language and cultural gaps between the original poetry and the contemporary approach of the music, it seems that this music and the poetry were destined for each other.
Milan is a superb vocalist and her clear, precise and highly emotional delivery is a pure delight from start to finish. The instrumental parts are also sublime with Koivistoinen playing some of the most passionate concise solos of his career. Kantonen is ideal in his role as sensitive accompanist and also delivers some great solo spots. The rhythm section is perfect for the job, and the veterans play with precision and vigor.
Overall this is a brilliant album, which reflects the best qualities of Finnish Jazz and the Jazz & Poetry idiom at its full glory. For some strange reason this album is still available (from SvartFind albums on this label Records) so every true music connoisseur in his right mind should be ordering it right now! The fact that you don´t know Finnish means absolutely nothing in this case ;)

The "Popstudio" / "Jazzstudio" broadcasts were usually dedicated to one band / artists, but in some cases two acts were combined into one show, which allowed each of them just about twenty minutes to perform, as is the case on the first show included here. The other two sessions were recorded on different dates.
PiirpaukeFind albums by this artist, founded in 1974 by saxophonist / keyboardist / composer Sakari KukkoFind albums by this artist and still active today forty-five years later, was one of the first European Jazz-World Fusion ensembles. It includes initially also guitarist Hasse WalliFind albums by this artist, bassist Antti HyttiFind albums by this artist and drummer Jukka WasamaFind albums by this artist. Synthesizer player Otto RomanowskiFind albums by this artist appeared as an associate member. This live radio broadcast captures the group before the release of their eponymous debut album, which created quite a stir at the time. They perform three pieces; one composed by Kukko and two unique arrangements by the group members of folk songs: one Romanian and the other Karelian in origin. Both folk songs were included on the a.m. debut album. The music is a wonderful amalgam of modern Jazz, sometimes with freely improvised parts, and folkloristic inspirations, which will become the modus operandi of the group.
Saxophonist Tapio TuominenFind albums by this artist and his trio, which also included bassist Jorma KoivulehtoFind albums by this artist and drummer Jukka WasamaFind albums by this artist, represent the Finnish Free Jazz movement, which flourished in the 1970 and led to high local activity as well as international cooperation with other European players, including those from Poland and other East European countries. The trio plays three original compositions credited to Wasama, but obviously presenting a group improvisation effort. Similarly to the material presented by the Wasama - Tuominen TrioFind albums by this artist, presented on an earlier release of the "Jazzstudio" sessions, the music is typical of European Free Jazz at the time, highly inventive and emotional, which lost nothing of its power over time.
The 1970s were hay days for the Finnish Big Bands and several were active in parallel at the time, which for a country of the size of Finland was absolutely phenomenal. One of the factors that enabled this to happen was the solid local and national financial support available for Arts at the time, and combined with the number of young Jazz musicians flooding the scene and involvement of semi-professional / amateurs evolved into a heaven on earth for Big Band enthusiasts.

Readers interested in the genesis of The Serious Music Ensemble and Sarmanto´s early recording chronology are invited to read my review of the "A Boston DateFind albums with this title" album, another archival release documenting this ensemble. The music on this album, which was recorded live on October 11, 1971 and December 4, 1972, features almost entirely original material composed by Sarmanto, except for one track which was composed by the little known American pianist Herbie NicholsFind albums by this artist. The Nichols piece is previously unreleased and the rest of the tracks appear on the following albums by Sarmanto: "CounterbalanceFind albums with this title", "Like A FragonardFind albums with this title", "A Boston DateFind albums with this title", "Flowers In The WaterFind albums with this title" and "Everything Is ItFind albums with this title" and the Koivistoinen album "3rd VersionFind albums with this title".
The music is an early form of modern European Jazz, and although the ensemble features electric piano and guitar, it has only a limited proximity to Jazz-Rock Fusion, which was extremely popular at the time. The music is mostly song related, in contrast to the music presented on the first volume, but is still extensively improvised and quite complex. Hapuoja´s vocals and vocalese parts take the music into a different dimension and her performances are simply hair-raising. There is a strong sense of melody but the lengthy tunes develop significantly from the initial statement of the melodic theme to powerful instrumental climaxes, serving as vehicles for the musicians to fully explore their ideas.
There is no doubt that this is some of the most interesting early modern European Jazz, which by the time this music was recorded had already established its own identity. It is also a superb document of the burgeoning Finnish Jazz scene, which was simply exploding with talent at the time. The songs are also a marvelous example of the Poetry & Jazz idiom, which enjoyed a wonderful and fruitful bloom during the early days of Finnish Jazz.
It is a miracle that such an exquisite material, both as far as the music and the recording quality are concerned, is finally released, almost half a Century after it was recorded. Kudos to SvartFind albums on this label Records for releasing this and other archival Finnish Jazz albums and keeping the legacy of the Finnish Jazz alive!

  | TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI / JUKKA HAURU & SUPERKINGS ~ POP LIISA VOL. 01 & VOL. 02 SVART 003 (Barcode: 6430050665647) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1973 Released: 2016
By the time this live broadcast was captured on tape Tasavallan PresidenttiFind albums by this artist, first Finnish Fusion / Prog Supergroup, already released three seminal albums and were about to release their fourth (and sadly last) album "Milky Way MosesFind albums with this title" recorded earlier in London. The lineup underwent another change when the new bass player Heikki VirtanenFind albums by this artist joined vocalist Eero RaittinenFind albums by this artist, guitarist Jukka TolonenFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist and drummer Vesa AaltonenFind albums by this artist.
The group performs just two extended pieces, full of lengthy instrumental improvisations kept in a jam session mood with a strong Fusion orientation.
The first piece is a composition by the legendary Jazz saxophonist Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist, which originates from his Jazz & Poetry album "ValtakuntaFind albums with this title", where it was sung by Raittinen, and which was also recorded on the a.m. fourth album in its English version with the lyrics translated by Jim PembrokeFind albums by this artist, a member of WigwamFind albums by this artist (yes there was a strong bond between these two pioneering Finnish groups).
The second piece is a rendition of one of the songs appearing on the third album "LambertlandFind albums with this title" composed by Tolonen. Considering that eighteen months passed between the original recording of this song and this broadcast, it is not surprising that this version is diametrically different from the original, and present a much more Jazz oriented approach which even explores some Free Form elements.
Overall this recording presents Tasavallan Presidentti at their absolute peak and offers an amazing example of European / Finnish Fusion created at the time.
Guitarist Jukka HauruFind albums by this artist was part of the Finnish Fusion scene and was closely related to the Tasavallan Presidentti gang, since he was substituting for Tolonen whenever needed between 1972 and 1974. He was considered as a superb guitarist, which the recordings herein prove beyond any doubt. He gathered a group of excellent top Finnish players for the purpose of recording his debut album "InformationFind albums with this title", which appears here jokingly renamed to SuperkingsFind albums by this artist. Again not surprisingly it includes two Tasavallan Presidentti members: Virtanen and Aaltonen, as well as violinist Juhani PoutanenFind albums by this artist, pianist Olli AhvenlahtiFind albums by this artist and percussionist Reino LaineFind albums by this artist.
Together the sextet performs four original compositions, three by Hauru and one by Poutanen, one of which appears on the a.m. debut album and three were unrecorded at the time. The music is even more Jazz oriented that the Tasavallan Presidentti set, offering much more freedom than the usual Fusion played at the time, with a strong Zappaesque tinge and obvious extended instrumental soloing.
Overall this is some of the most staggering music created in Europe in the early 1970s that one is able to hear and for Fusion and Jazz oriented Prog-heads this is an absolute must have!

  | WIGWAM ~ FAIRYPORT ESOTERIC 2182 (Barcode: 5013929728226) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1971 Released: 2010
3rd album by the Finnish Prog Masters WigwamFind albums by this artist (originally released as a double LP), marking the arrival of the group at a point of maturity after the initial period of searching for their unique voice, as reflected on their first two releases. This album is often considered as one of the finest examples of Finnish Prog and together with its follow up "BeingFind albums with this title" it presents Wigwam as one of Prog´s all time highest achievements. The band´s core: vocalist Jim PembrokeFind albums by this artist (a British expatriate living in Finland), keyboardist Jukka GustavsonFind albums by this artist, who was the band´s principal composer, bassist Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist and drummer Ronnie OsterbergFind albums by this artist are joined by several guest musicians, mainly guitarist Jukka TolonenFind albums by this artist, who often cooperated with the band, and woodwind / brass players, including Jazz saxophonists Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist and Pekka PoyryFind albums by this artist, expanding the overall sound of the basic quartet. The compositions are all outstanding, moody and full of unexpected turns and twists. Superb instrumental sections allow all musicians to express their talents, often moving into lengthy Jazzy improvisations. Pembroke´s English vocals were a great asset for the group and contributed to their immense popularity outside of Finland. Almost four decades after this material was recorded, it still sounds fresh and exciting, ready to be discovered by new generations of music lovers. Absolutely essential!
