MIKE WESTBROOK ~ LONDON BRIDGE IS BROKEN DOWN
BGO 0788 (Barcode: 5017261207883) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Classical Fusion

Recorded: 1987 Released: 2008

The second phase of Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist’s illustrious career, which was initiated around mid-1970s and continues to this day, can be characterized by his gradual shift from the big orchestral formats to much more intimate assemblages, centered around himself and his wife Kate WestbrookFind albums by this artist and including members from a steady core of musicians cooperating with them. Kate’s remarkable voice and even more remarkable personality added several new dimensions to the unique “Westbrook voicing” of musical ideas, which would become their trademark in years to come. Her extraordinary sensitivity, openness and passion for European literature and poetry and her ability to sing in French and German (in addition to English of course), combined with Mike’s sublime talent for composition, enabled them to create a vast body of work, which extends far beyond “music making” per se and transferred gradually into one of the most profound European expressions of Culture.

Although deeply rooted in Jazz, their music encompasses many additional musical areas, ranging from cabaret and chanson to contemporary Classical music. Always meticulously researched and perfectly scored, the Westbrook projects are all masterpieces of contemporary Art, way beyond straightforward music creation. One can perhaps trace these tendencies to the Jazz & Poetry amalgamations common in the early 1960s, or even much earlier examples from Classical music, which combined musical ideas with literary sources. Mike and Kate are a complete cultural phenomenon; alas a radically rare one in our times, in complete contrast to most of the “musical“ ventures polluting our ears.

The music included on this album is perhaps the most complex and ambitious project the Westbrooks have ever undertaken. Commissioned by the French Festival International de Jazz d’Amiens for the 1987 edition of the festival, it was premiered there and later recorded in Paris. The music is an extended work for two orchestras – Jazz and Symphonic – incorporating texts selected and written by Kate. The music and text were written and assembled over a period of four years (1983-1987) and inspired by the places, which the Westbrooks visited during their intensive touring voyages. The overall idea was to present a picture of Europe at the time, with its immense political, social and cultural complexity, focusing on four European Capitals (London, Prague, Berlin and Vienna) and the French Picardie Region.

Westbrook’s Jazz “orchestra” was in fact a nonet, with him on piano, Kate on vocals, Chris BiscoeFind albums by this artist on saxophones and clarinet, Peter WhymanFind albums by this artist on saxophones, Graham RussellFind albums by this artist on trumpet and flugelhorn, Paul NiemanFind albums by this artist on trombone, Brian GoddingFind albums by this artist on guitar, Steve CookFind albums by this artist on bass and Tony MarshFind albums by this artist on drums. The Mike Westbrook Orchestra and Le Sinfonietta de PicardieFind albums by this artist were both conducted by Alexandre MyratFind albums by this artist. The album was originally released in 1988 on VirginFind albums on this label as a four LP set (three and a half to be exact), but disappeared almost immediately from the shelves. Kudos to BGOFind albums on this label for reissuing this masterpiece and exposing this music to new potential listeners, nothing deserves a wider recognition than this cultural treasure. Beyond essential!

VERNERI POHJOLA ~ PEKKA
EDITION 1092 (Barcode: 5060509790074) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2017

This is the sixth album by Finnish Jazz trumpeter / composer Verneri PohjolaFind albums by this artist recorded in a quintet setting with keyboardist Tuomo PrattalaFind albums by this artist, guitarist Teemu ViinikainenFind albums by this artist, bassist Antti LotjonenFind albums by this artist and drummer Mika KallioFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven compositions by legendary Finnish bassist / composer Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist, who was Verneri´s father.

In the liner notes of the album Verneri explains the background of his decision to record his father´s music, despite the complex personal relationship with him as a result of his parents divorce when Verneri was just two years old, which resulted in him being raised by his mother with almost no contact with his father. Additional complexity arose from the "son of…" syndrome, from which many children of famous people suffer from, being constantly measured up to their parents, mostly completely out of context. As Verneri states, he decided to make this album only when he felt he could "make the music sound his own"; not surprisingly Verneri dedicates this album to his mother Inkeri.

I feel particularly lucky to know personally both Pekka and his son Verneri. I met Pekka in London, when Finnish Progressive Rock fist managed to conquer the international scene and when his albums were released on VirginFind albums on this label Records. Later on I met him several times in Finland during my visits there. We kept in touch for years and he sent me his albums regularly. His death in 2008 at a ridiculous young age was a blow for me since I always loved both him and his music dearly. I met Verneri in Poland when he joined the Polish Jazz trio RGGFind albums by this artist and I was present at the concert hall where their live album "City Of Gardens" was recorded. The following year I invited RGG and Verneri to perform at my Singer Jazz Festival in Warsaw. Of course we are now in touch – life and music continue…

The music Verneri chose to perform on this album was originally released on the following four brilliant albums by Pekka (his 1st, 2nd, 5th and 10th releases): "Pihkasilma Kaarnakorva (Resineye Barkear)Find albums with this title", "B The MagpieFind albums with this title", "Katkavaaran LohikaarmeFind albums with this title" and "Changing WatersFind albums with this title" released between 1972 and 1992 and presenting a wide spectrum of Pekka´s diverse compositions. Listeners familiar with the original recordings will be surprised by Verneri´s adaptations, which bring the music up to date and transform them stylistically into modern Jazz, but carefully preserve the original melody lines and the intrinsic melancholy that always characterized Pekka´s music. Verneri´s trumpet symbolically represents the second generation, whereas the guitar reflects the Rocky roots of the first generation. Whichever way one wants to look at it, the music is absolutely brilliant from start to finish and completely relevant on its own even to listeners oblivious of its origins. I am happy to see that Verneri managed to overcome his fears and psychological barriers, to create an exceptional example of cross-generation continuance.

Overall this is a brilliant piece of music, bridging musical styles and concepts, which takes no prisoners and is completely overwhelming in every way. Verneri plays some sublime trumpet lines on this album and the rest of the quintet all contribute amicably and ably to create a timeless musical experience. As such I can only recommend this album to all true music lovers, young and old, everywhere in the world where great music is appreciated.

EGG ~ THE CIVIL SURFACE
ESOTERIC 2003 (Barcode: 5013929710320) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene

Recorded: 1974 Released: 2007

3rd and last album by the brilliant British trio EggFind albums by this artist, which comprised of keyboardist Dave StewartFind albums by this artist, bassist Mont CampbellFind albums by this artist and drummer Clive BrooksFind albums by this artist, recorded almost three years after the group disbanded following the release of their previous album. Unfortunately the reunion proved to be short lived, and this was to be their last recording together. Egg was an archetypal representative of the Canterbury scene and their sound, dominated by Stewart´s keyboards, is one of the genre´s most recognizable aural icons. In between recording the second and this, the third album with Egg, Stewart played keyboards with Hatfield And The NorthFind albums by this artist, another seminal Canterbury band, contributing his incredible talent to the success of that ensemble. The album is a superb example of the Canterbury essence – strange haunting melodies, quirky rhythmic patterns and incredible virtuosic instrumental performances, spiced on top with a good measure of British humor. There is not one weak moment here from start to finish and the music stand its ground honorably, in complete disregard to the time passing by. A few notable guest musicians take part in the recording, including members of Henry CowFind albums by this artist (fellow VirginFind albums on this label label recording artists at the time) and guitarist Steve HillageFind albums by this artist. This album is an absolute must to every Canterbury fan!

GILGAMESH ~ ANOTHER FINE TUNE YOU`VE GOT ME INTO
ESOTERIC 2126 (Barcode: 5013929722620) ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene

Recorded: 1978 Released: 2009

2nd album by the wonderful Canterbury scene iconic ensemble GilgameshFind albums by this artist, founded by keyboardist Alan GowenFind albums by this artist in 1972. Over the years the ensemble operated under a revolving door policy with lineup changes as frequent as gigging opportunities and the musicians changing places between groups like Hatfield And The NorthFind albums by this artist, National HealthFind albums by this artist, Soft HeapFind albums by this artist and other lesser known outfits. The list of ex-Gilgamesh members reads like a crème de la crème of the Canterbury Jazz / Rock scene. By 1975 the group managed to record their debut album for the VirginFind albums on this label´s esoteric imprint CarolineFind albums on this label, only to splinter again soon after. Three years later Gowen re-assembled a new lineup of Gilgamesh and recorded this album, which unfortunately was to be their last, with Gowen dying of leukemia in 1981 at the age of just 33. The players on this album are Gowen on keyboards, original Gilgamesh member guitarist Phil LeeFind albums by this artist, bassist Hugh HopperFind albums by this artist and veteran Jazz drummer Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist. The music, written almost entirely by Gowen, is typical Canterbury mix of Jazz and some Rock influences, with extended improvisations and brilliant performances from start to finish. Gowen´s brilliant compositions remain unmatched and unchallenged in their harmonic beauty and sophistication. This is classic Canterbury stuff and it retains its vitality and importance with no signs of getting outdated. A must to any Canterbury or British Jazz-Rock enthusiast!

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2010

6th album by Finnish Prog band WigwamFind albums by this artist, the most famous Prog act from that country, which marks a new phase in the group´s history. Following the departure of two founding members bassist Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist and organist Jukka GustavsonFind albums by this artist, who gave Wigwam its distinctive sound and musical direction, the band had to reorganize and recruit new members, which of course also influenced their musical direction. The result proved to be their most commercially successful release in their career and a flagship for Finnish Prog worldwide. Although less complex and sophisticated that the recordings by Wigwam Mk I, the album includes plenty of superb melodies and excellent musicianship, which are effective and memorable, accounting for its popularity and legendary status among Prog fans. This album was one of the very few Finnish albums to be released also in UK (on the VirginFind albums on this label label), shortly after it was released in his home country on the legendary LoveFind albums on this label label. Recorded: 1976 Released: 2010

7th album by Finnish Prog band WigwamFind albums by this artist, the most famous Prog act from that country, which is the second recording by Wigwam Mk II. The revamped Wigwam, more Pop / Rock oriented than the original incarnation of the band, was still a formidable ensemble able of producing excellent music, and the album includes plenty of superb melodies and excellent musicianship, which are effective and memorable. WIGWAM ~ DARK ALBUM (50TH ANNIVERSARY EXTENDED EDITION)
SVART 161 (Barcode: 6430065585213) ~ FINLAND ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1977 Released: 2018

This is a reissue of the eighth (and last by the original group) album by the iconic Finnish Prog band WigwamFind albums by this artist, which featured a new lineup of the group and marked a new period in the band´s career, often referred to as Wigwam Mk. II. Following the departure of keyboardist Jukka GustavsonFind albums by this artist and bassist Pekka PohjolaFind albums by this artist, the two remaining members: vocalist / pianist Jim PembrokeFind albums by this artist and drummer Ronnie OsterbergFind albums by this artist were joined by guitarist Pekka RechardtFind albums by this artist and bassist Mans GroundstroemFind albums by this artist. Keyboardists Jukka Gustavson and Hessu HietanenFind albums by this artist added keyboard work on the tracks but the lineup reverted to a quartet again. The original album presented eight original songs, five composed by Rechardt and three by Pembroke, all featuring lyrics written by Pembroke (except for one, which was a poem), who was a British expatriate and could naturally handle the lyrics in English flawlessly. This remastered and expanded edition adds a second CD, which includes the demo version of the album including first mix of six tracks, which was rejected by VirginFind albums on this label Records (the British label that released the two previous albums in the UK).

The music, although undoubtedly somewhat less strictly Prog oriented, is by all means absolutely brilliant, wonderfully combining the excellent songwriting with perfect performances, full of great instrumental parts. Wigwam were, as it often happened with the capricious Prog fanatics, accused for taking a more commercial path, but the band, which suffered from a dichotomy in its ranks since its inception, was now completely united behind their musical output and quite honestly read well the changing Prog landscape, which pulled many of the classic Prog bands towards a more song oriented direction. Although this album is often described as outwardly commercial, is not really that different from its two predecessors, and the difference is mostly due to the different sound ambience rather than the music itself.

The collected talents of Wigwam´s members still made it one of the best Prog band in Europe and even worldwide, and if not for the fact that they originated from Finland, they would have probably reached to top of the Prog peak. This album was released in the UK and a few other countries, bringing the band some success, but Prog at the time was approaching its global collapse, when the initial creativity of the genre simply dried out. Wigwam decided to call it quits after this album was released and future efforts to resurrect the band proved to be as futile as those of other Prog band around the globe. The magic was simply gone.

This excellently sounding and expanded edition is a must have for Finnish Prog / Wigwam fans all over the globe and SvartFind albums on this label Records, as usual, made a perfect job preparing this reissue. Brilliant stuff!

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART / MAGIC BAND ~ UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED
VIRGIN 365511 (Barcode: 094636551128) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1973 Released: 2006

Captain BeefheartFind albums by this artist (born Don VlietFind albums by this artist and later adopted the name Van VlietFind albums by this artist) was one of America’s most enigmatic and groundbreaking Rock personalities. His ability to mix jazz, blues, contemporary classical and rock made him a unique figure and a true innovator. He met and befriended Frank ZappaFind albums by this artist and the two cooperated in many ways (making movies, music and business together). Vliet was active on and off the music scene for about 20 years (between the late 1960’s and late 1980’s), with long periods of inactivity in between. His back-up group, called The Magic BandFind albums by this artist, changed personnel frequently, but always included top-notch players based in different musical genres like blues, jazz or rock. He left a sizable legacy of superb music, which can now be appreciated with a much better perspective than at the time of its release. This album marks a relavtively short “commercial” period of Vliet’s output, after a series of almost Avant-Garde albums, starting with his debut Safe As MilkFind albums with this title from 1967. The songs are much closer to the blues and rock tradition, but Vliet’s unique voice and songwriting make them fascinating enough to last for posterity and become classics.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART / MAGIC BAND ~ DOC AT THE RADAR STATION (REMASTERED EDITION)
VIRGIN 365513 (Barcode: 094636551326) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1980 Released: 2006

When the legal mess between record labels, which prevented any of his album to be released for almost six years, was finally over with the release of Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)Find albums with this title in 1980, Don VlietFind albums by this artist immediately started work on a new album, which was completed and released later in the same year. Doc At The Radar Station was Vliet’s ultimate statement and generally considered his best work of the (third) last period of his career. It is stylistically much harsher and harder than its brilliant predecessor, closely reminiscent to the early works, but definitely much richer musically. The almost industrial sound blends perfectly with the bizarre lyrics and Vliet’s expressive vocalizations. Considering the fact that by the time this music was recorded, the world was sinking deep into sludge of musical mediocrity and muck, Vliet’s star shines even brighter. Definitely a timeless classic, which hopefully will be discovered by the young generation of music lovers, as well as re-discovered by some old-timers.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART / MAGIC BAND ~ ICE CREAM FOR CROW
VIRGIN 365514 (Barcode: 094636551425) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1982 Released: 2006

Sadly and unexpectedly, this album was to be Vliet’s swan song. Recorded with (yet again) new line-up of the Magic Band, it was to a large extent a closing of a circle by this visionary artist, as he re-visits here many of his earliest musical ides going way back to the 1960’s, which somehow remained omitted from earlier albums. Stylistically it is closest to his early recordings as well, with the same atmosphere of tension and frequent changes of mood and tempo. Vliet throws the lyrics at the listener with harsh rapid fire, more often in spoken form than singing. Of course the magic is all there, even when the music becomes aggressive, metallic and dissonant. Obviously influenced by the punk movement (although he himself was an inspiration to many of the movement’s pioneers – another circle closing), Vliet incorporates the punkish alienation and vehemence superbly, spicing it with brilliant overlays of complex outlandish musical threads, creating a collage of rare intensity and expressiveness. This album requires some digestion, but eventually it remains standing as an icon of the era and the last obelisk of Vliet’s colonnade. After this album was recorded, Vliet disconnected himself from the world of music, dedicating all of his time to painting, living in total seclusion, and eventually tragically fell victim to multiple sclerosis.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART / MAGIC BAND ~ BLUEJEANS & MOONBEAMS
VIRGIN 365515 (Barcode: 094636551524) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1974 Released: 2006

Following the release of Unconditionally GuaranteedFind albums with this title, Captain BeefheartFind albums by this artist and the Magic BandFind albums by this artist were about to start a European tour, but as a result of the commercial failure of the album (and other personal problems between Vliet and the band members) the Magic Band fell apart shortly before the tour was about to start. Vliet haphazardly put together a new version of the Magic Band, which made the tour (see the Live London ’74 album) and later recorded this album. The music again displays a more “commercial” approach, but the album was received coldly by critics and fans alike, which caused Vliet to withdraw from the music scene for a few years with the decision not try to make “commercial” music again. Mind you, “commercial” when referred to Vliet’s output, takes quite a different meaning than in most cases. In retrospect this is still a classic album, which lost nothing of it’s magic in the passing of time. Vliet’s brilliant vocal interpretations and superb songwriting are apparent and this is definitely a must have for all his numerous fans.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART / MAGIC BAND ~ SHINY BEAST (BAT CHAIN PULLER)
VIRGIN 365517 (Barcode: 094636551722) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1978 Released: 2006

Following the release of Bluejeans & Moonbeams and the lack of success of his last two albums, Vliet joined forces with his old buddy Frank Zappa, becoming a guest vocalist with Mothers of Invention during their 1975 tour (as captured on the live Bongo Fury album). He then borrowed some of Zappa’s players to revamp his Magic Band. In 1976 he and his group recorded an album of completely new material, called Bat Chain Puller, which was stylistically much closer to his earlier works. Unfortunately that album was never released as a result of legal battles between his record label (Virgin) and a new record label (Warner Bros.) he tried to sign with. Soon after the studio tapes leaked to the bootleg industry, which flooded the market with illegal copies of the album, making Vliet quite unhappy. To resolve this mess Vliet recorded in 1978 a new version of the album (using a different line-up of the Magic Band), this time called Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) for Warner Bros., who tried to release it the same year, but alas again it was legally bulldozed by Virgin. Fortunately Virgin eventually released the album in 1980 (after a settlement with Warner Bros. was reached). Musically the album is a triumphant return to Vliet’s idiosyncratic, magical mix of originality and genius (rivaled only by his friend Zappa and often quite similar to his music). The album also featured Vliet’s original paintings used for the cover art, revealing his other (apart from music) artistic vocation. This is a masterpiece of rock music and a timeless classic.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART / MAGIC BAND ~ LIVE LONDON `74
VIRGIN 368577 (Barcode: 094636857725) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1974 Released: 2006

Although Vliet and his Magic Band left us a sizeable legacy of recorded material, they never released a live album, which is quite strange in many ways. This album was recorded during the European tour, which followed Vliet’s signing with Virgin and the release of the Unconditionally Guaranteed album. As his band fell apart shortly after the recording of the album, Vliet had to put together a new version of the band just before the tour started and rehearse with them both the new material from the album they were promoting, as well as some old favorites – an almost impossible task considering the complexity of the material and the lack of time. Nevertheless, as we can hear here, the results were brilliant, as always, with everything he ever attempted. The concert captured here presents Vliet and the band at top form and the music flows beautifully from start to finish. Earlier version of this recording appeared on CD in semi-bootleg versions, but never in full and never as brilliantly sounding as this one. A must! (Just for the sake of historic perspective, the band who used to open the shows for Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band on this tour were no other than Henry Cow, who also signed with Virgin at that time)

2nd album by Van Der Graaf GeneratorFind albums by this artist leader Peter HammillFind albums by this artist, who maintained a remarkable solo career in parallel to his work with the band. Although accompanied by his VDGG mates, his solo albums were quite different in sound and atmosphere from the band’s albums. Hammill is much more personal and expressive, with song lyrics being poetic and much more complex in nature. His vocal talents come to full exposure here and the atmosphere is passionate and bleak. The album is considered to be one of his strongest efforts and is often referred to as a concept album about old age, although formally never described as such. Definitely a must for all VDGG and Hammill fans.

The complex and deeply poetic lyrics require attentive listening and firmly place Hammill in the creative Avant-Garde, far away from the trivial dribble so often used as lyrics by less ambitious artists. Hammill’s vocal performances are electrifying and suit perfectly his convolute texts. Although often criticized a self-indulgent, this is timeless Art, worthy of repeated listening and admiration. 4th album by Peter HammillFind albums by this artist, who was then still living a double life both as the Van Der Graaf GeneratorFind albums by this artist leader and a solo artist. The band members accompany him here as on all the early albums, but the music is quite different from the band’s material, surely more personal and poetic. A balanced mixture of up-tempo numbers and slow introvert songs makes this a most pleasant listening experience, especially in view of how well Hammill’s material ages, being completely relevant today as much as it was at the time of its release. It is quite apparent when listening to the album that Hammill was an extraordinary music maker, with completely unique palette of sounds and a personal thesaurus. In addition he was also remarkably prolific recording more that one album a year, something he continued to do for many years to come. Getting into Hammill’s music can take time, but I recommend the effort (is one is necessary), as the rewards are worth it. For VDGG and Hammill fans this is of course a must.

PETER HAMMILL ~ NADIR`S BIG CHANCE (EXPANDED EDITION)
VIRGIN 370513 (Barcode: 094637051320) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1974 Released: 2006

5th album by Van Der Graaf GeneratorFind albums by this artist leader Peter HammillFind albums by this artist, where he takes a bold move by dramatically changing his musical approach and trying to create a more straightforward rock music. Influenced by the early Punk movement, Hammill demonstrates a deliberate sloppy approach to the instrumentation, creating a noisy and jarring effect. He assumes the character of Rikki Nadir, a garage rocker, and treats the music and his vocals with vengeance, with the listener being unable to comprehend the lyrics properly. Although shocking at the time of its release, in retrospect the album shows simply another, more spontaneous side of Hammill’s many talents and the album remains an important document of his career.

VIRGIN 370514 (Barcode: 094637051429) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1976 - 1977 Released: 2006

6th album by Peter HammillFind albums by this artist and a complete about face compared to the punkish predecessor. Back to his more customary lyricism and gloom, this is an album about end of relationships, a theme common in our lives and therefore more approachable. Hammill’s Van Der Graaf GeneratorFind albums by this artist buddies are back at his side, providing great instrumental support. His voice is stronger and pronunciation clearer then ever, so the lyrics are easily audible. The music moves between melancholic ballads and more up-tempo number. Orchestral arrangements are added on some songs, making this the most versatile Hammill album to date. Many of Hammill’s fans cite this to be their favorite album of all, which is quite understandable, as it includes some of his best songs and performances. In retrospect it looses nothing of its power and beauty over the years and remains a true classic.

Recorded: 1978 Released: 2006

7th album by Peter HammillFind albums by this artist and also regarded as one of his strongest releases. It is more artistic and experimental than its mellow predecessor, with music going all over stylistically. Hammill is almost alone here, playing all the instruments and singing, with some occasional help form Van Der Graaf GeneratorFind albums by this artist cahoots David JacksonFind albums by this artist and Graham SmithFind albums by this artist. This is an album that requires repeated listening before it truly sinks in, with layers and layers musical and lyrical overtones that need to be assimilated in time. The effort pays off eventually and once hooked, it stays with you forever. Not recommended to Hammill beginners, but essential to his true fans. The song “If I could” is perhaps Hammill’s most memorable creations amongst the hundreds of songs he has written and although he revisits it on later album, the version included here tops them all.

8th album by Peter HammillFind albums by this artist and another about face compared to its predecessor. This time he comes up with a set of beautifully melodic tunes, almost conventional (mind you Hammill is never really conventional), which are more accessible than almost any of his previous material. Don’t misinterpret this as a put down, these are still great songs with many of Hammill’s characteristics, all beautifully sung and played. The overall atmosphere is just brighter and less tormented than usual. I haven’t listened to this album in a long time and upon hearing the remaster I was pleasantly surprised to rediscover this material, which stands the test of time beautifully. This is yet another face of Hammill’s multi-faced artistic portrait. 9th album by Peter HammillFind albums by this artist and the last to be released on the CharismaFind albums on this label label (well not really, as it was first released on Hammill’s independent label and only later licensed back to his old label). It is also the first “real” solo album, as by the time it was recorded Van Der Graaf GeneratorFind albums by this artist were no more. The only link to his band is saxophonist David JacksonFind albums by this artist present on one song only. All the rest of the music is played solely by Hammill, which of course makes this a truly personal statement. The work on this album took quite a while and he included here songs he has been working on for quite a while, which were postponed due to the VDGG usual havoc. Now free of any other obligations, Hammill was able to concentrate on his solo work. The music and the texts are as usual deeply expressive and personal, culminating in the multi-part 19+ minutes suite, which was side B of the original LP. In many respects this albums marks the end of en era, for Hammill and music in general, with the golden 1970s behind and the dreary 1980s ahead. 1st album recorded while Steve HillageFind albums by this artist was still a member of GongFind albums by this artist. After recording with Gong the entire “Radio Gnome Invisible” trilogy, Hillage decided it was time to start a solo career, where his music would be featured more prominently, with this album being the first step in that direction. In Gong Hillage met his life-long partner Miquette GiraudyFind albums by this artist, who would become his musical collaborator and they both composed all the music and the entire concept of this album. Most of his Gong cohorts participate, but Hillage added the great Dave StewartFind albums by this artist on keyboards and Lindsay CooperFind albums by this artist (from Henry CowFind albums by this artist) on bassoon, to create a much more sophisticated sound and instrumentation. The material consists mostly of 3 long (2 over 14 minutes) suites and a few shorter pieces. The overall sound and style of the album is still very much Gong related / influenced and can be considered as another Gong off-shot project (which many Gong fans do), but Hillage’s individuality is certainly already present and it will come to full fruition starting with the next album. In retrospect this album manages to keep at its extraordinary qualities well and is still fresh and exciting, adding another Canterbury classic album to the list.

In contrast to the debut album, which was recorded while Hillage and his partner Miquette GiraudyFind albums by this artist were still members of GongFind albums by this artist and included strong similarities to Gong material, this album was quite a different affair. VIRGIN 373440 (Barcode: 094637344026) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1977 - 1978 Released: 2007

5th album by the legendary guitarist Steve HillageFind albums by this artist and the only live document of his music during the early period of his solo career. Recorded during a period of 18 months when Hillage and his band (three different band lineups are featured) performed frantically all over the world in support of his excellent solo albums, this material was initially released as a double LP. The first 3 sides of the album included live material and the fourth side included new studio material. For the CD reissue the 3 live sides were combined into a single CD (now with bonus live material previously unreleased) and the studio material was moved as bonus tracks of the next album (OpenFind albums with this title), where it rightfully belongs. Hillage composed almost all the music on the album with his life-long musical companion and synthesizer pioneer Miquette GiraudyFind albums by this artist, whom Hillage befriended during his GongFind albums by this artist days. The sound of the band is often quite similar to Gong’s familiar mixture of psychedelic Space-Rock and early ambient influences (which would later develop as Hillage’s main interest) are also quite evident. In retrospect this is quite visionary music, foretelling by almost 20 years the ambient explosion of the late 1990’s. There is a lot happening (musically) here, which means this stuff requires attentive listening to truly comprehend its complexity. This is an important historical document, which sheds a lot of light on the music scene of the late 1970’s, which existed in parallel to the punk dominated mainstream.

6th album by Steve HillageFind albums by this artist, which was really an off-shot project from his “normal” sequence of solo albums, as it was recorded to serve as background music for a special event staged in London in April of 1979 – the “Mind And Body Festival”. As part of the festival’s preparations a special dome was erected, called the Rainbow Dome, as it presented the visitor / spectator with special light effects. The festival’s organizers contacted Hillage with their plans and he immediately agreed to write the music, which would be played continuously in the Rainbow Dome. Hillage and his partner Miquette GiraudyFind albums by this artist quickly assembled an ambient soundtrack for the project and the music was released to coincide with the festival’s opening. The music is a beautiful example of early ambient composition, executed with deep sensibility and grace. It was to be an extremely influential piece of music, which would be often cited by members of the young generation of composers of ambient music some two decades later as one of their main influences. 5th album, written while Steve HackettFind albums by this artist was recuperating in Brazil, following a grueling couple of years filled with concert appearances and studio recordings. Hackett disbanded his regular band, with which he toured supporting his earlier releases, and for this project he retained the services of one musician only – his keyboards player Nick MagnusFind albums by this artist. Hence this is basically a duet effort, with the only exception being Steve’s brother John HackettFind albums by this artist, who contributes his flute on one tune. This is also the first album featuring Hackett as a lead vocalist, something Hackett was trying to avoid for a long time. It turns out he is quite capable of carrying a tune and his vocal performances are perfectly acceptable. The music is as good as always, with a slightly “lighter” approach, but nevertheless this is still Hackett, who couldn’t make bad music even if he tried very hard. Especially the fantastic “The Air Conditioned Nightmare” instrumental, which is a Prog classic and remained for many years a regular feature of his concerts. In retrospect, considering this album was unavailable for so many years, it’s a pleasure to remember and a most enjoyable listening experience.

VIRGIN 4018 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

4th album from 1980. Typical Hackett material with superb guitar playing in addition to support from his brother on flute and other master musicians. By this time Hackett established his unique voicing and the position of a Prog icon. Although some critics describe this album as one of his lesser acheivements, it is still a great Prog record and Steve`s fans surely would like it in their collection.

KING CRIMSON ~ THRAK
VIRGIN 40313 (Barcode: 724384031329) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1994 Released: 1995

13th album from 1994. A brilliant debut album by the `double trio` version of KC from 1994, which marks the return of KC to `active duty` after several years of silence. The new expanded line-up enables ventyres to extremely complex interplay between the musicians on a multi-level improvisational scale. Innovative and stunning!

VIRGIN 474888 (Barcode: 724347488825) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2005

3rd album, considered by many as the band`s finest hour. On this album Van Der Graaf GeneratorFind albums by this artist crystalized their sound and dark, somber musical approach. Using the heavy Hammond sound and the (unusual in most bands) saxophone, they acheive an overall overwhelming effect, close to the `wall of sound` approach used in free jazz. With much improved songwriting, this is a classic of the genre. With songs in the 10+ minutes range and innovative instrumentation, they certainly broke plenty of uncharted ground. A classic!

VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR ~ THE LEAST WE CAN DO IS WAVE TO EACH OTHER
VIRGIN 474889 (Barcode: 724347488924) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1969 Released: 2005

2nd album. Well in fact it is a first proper album, following the release of `Aerosol Grey Machine` a year earlier, which was really a solo album by leader Peter Hamill, released eventually under the VDGG name. VDGG always were a vehicle for the leader / poet Peter Hamill, whose somber, cathastrophic and mystical lyrics and theatrical vocals dominated the band`s image. Musically located somewhere between the experimental King Crimson and the lyrical Genesis, VDGG were undeniably an impostant part of the early UK Prog mosaic, with fans and foes alike. The music is a bit shaky here, to be much improved on the two following albums.

VIRGIN 474890 (Barcode: 724347489020) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2005

4th album by Van Der Graaf GeneratorFind albums by this artist and the last one of the first phase of the group, until they surface again in 1975. This is a well planned album with just 3 tracks, the last one an extended suite 23+ minutes long. Close in sound to the previous album, with Peter HammillFind albums by this artist`s theatrics exposed even further (somewhat like Peter GabrielFind albums by this artist`s work with GenesisFind albums by this artist) but with the lyrics getting ever more obtuse and obscure and extremely hard to follow. In retrospect this stands the test of time rather well, assuming you like the band to start with. Another classic of the genre.

JON LORD ~ PICTURED WITHIN
VIRGIN 493704 (Barcode: 724349370425) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1997 Released: 1998

Recorded in 1997 while Jon LordFind albums by this artist was still an active member of Deep PurpleFind albums by this artist, this is his furthest venture away from Rock and into the classical music. Although previous Lord`s solo albums flirted with classical music, on this one he takes the deep plundge and leaves the Rock elements completely out of the equation. This mostly instrumental / orchestral music is serene and deeply lyrical, with only a few vocal tracks. The album consists of 4 legthy suites, each sub-divided into 3 parts. As all things, a matter of taste, but the classical textures he produces here are really quite beautiful.

PETER HAMMILL ~ AND CLOSE AS THIS (EXPANDED EDITION)
VIRGIN 503278 (Barcode: 5099950327829) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1986 Released: 2007

13th album by Peter HammillFind albums by this artist and another complete about-face in comparison to its predecessor SkinFind albums with this title. Here we have Hammill alone, armed only with his piano (and some help from his MIDI and sequencers), singing his heart out and performing a great set of new songs. The passing years and the experience gathered over time only emphasize his immense talent and although such solo efforts are usually quite difficult to pull through, he manages to do so brilliantly. The material seems to be less dramatic than usual, almost calm and lyrical and as always deeply intimate and personal. The beautiful lullaby “Sleep Now” crowns the entire album. It is still unmistakably Hammill, showing yet another of his many faces and unveiling another layer of his complex personality. This is classic Hammill, something none of his many fans should miss in their collection.

PETER HAMMILL ~ SKIN (EXPANDED EDITION)
VIRGIN 503279 (Barcode: 5099950327928) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1985 Released: 2007

12th album by Peter HammillFind albums by this artist and by far one of his more interesting releases, although criticized severely due to the extensive use of MIDI and sequencers, which give the album a distinctive 1980s “New Wave” sound. On the album Hammill returns to a group format, using old Van Der Graaf GeneratorFind albums by this artist mates Guy EvansFind albums by this artist and David JacksonFind albums by this artist on all tracks along with several other musicians. In a sense this might be considered a VDGG album of sorts. The music is mostly up-tempo and rocky, but Hammill’s clever lyrics and his unique vocal approach set it apart from other contemporary albums. The overall impression is quite similar to the work David BowieFind albums by this artist was doing at the time, but of course it is still very much Hammill. I haven’t listened to this album for a very long time, but hearing it again now made me realize how alive and fresh it still sounds. This is classic Hammill, something none of his many fans should miss in their collection.

PETER HAMMILL ~ SITTING TARGETS (EXPANDED EDITION)
VIRGIN 503282 (Barcode: 5099950328222) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1980 - 1981 Released: 2007

10th album by Peter HammillFind albums by this artist and his first true 1980s release. In contrast to the convoluted A Black BoxFind albums with this title, Hammill decided to take a more direct and concise approach to his songwriting on this album. He also adapted the new 1980s technology, using synthesized sounds and studio trickery. Old Van Der Graaf GeneratorFind albums by this artist mates: Guy EvansFind albums by this artist (drums) and David JacksonFind albums by this artist (sax) take part in the recording on several tracks. In retrospect this is still a very strong album, with many memorable songs Hammill will continue to perform over the years. His unique approach to songwriting and the dramatic, theatrical performances remain effective, losing nothing of their power over the years. Although somewhat neglected in comparison to his earlier work, this is still classic Hammill, something none of his many fans should miss in their collection.

PETER HAMMILL ~ THE LOVE SONGS (EXPANDED EDITION)
VIRGIN 503286 (Barcode: 5099950328628) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1983 Released: 2007

11th album by Peter HammillFind albums by this artist and the most unusual project to date, in which he takes a retrospective view of his entire solo career. Often mistaken as a compilation album, this is much more than a compilation of previously recorded songs. Hammill constructed here an extraordinary collection of his love-related songs from his previous 10 albums, but re-recorded all the vocals (except one), re-mixed and enhanced many of the instrumental tracks and added one completely new song. The resulting album is a beautiful and deeply lyrical look at the gentle side of Hammill’s music. Of course when the love songs are written and sung by him, one can never expect the conventional approach to the subject. Most of the songs are dark and sad, reflecting the author’s complex view of life and live. This has been my favorite Hammill album for many years and it’s a great introduction to his work for listeners not familiar with his previous recordings. This is classic Hammill, something none of his many fans should miss in their collection.

GENESIS ~ 1970-1975
VIRGIN 5099951968328 (Barcode: 5099951968328) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1970 - 1975 Released: 2008

This monster Box Set brings back to life the bulk of early recordings by the British band GenesisFind albums by this artist, which is of course synonymous with Progressive Rock genre and includes their 2nd to 6th albums: "TrespassFind albums with this title", "Nursery CrymeFind albums with this title", "FoxtrotFind albums with this title", "Selling England By The PoundFind albums with this title" and "The Lamb Lies Down On BroadwayFind albums with this title". Once the Genesis lineup stabilized (starting with the 3rd album) the band produced a remarkable body of music, which now, almost four decades later, still consists of the defining elements of the genre. Even if Genesis were not truly groundbreaking or innovative, and considering some extravagancies and annoying aspects of over the top theatrics by the band´s lead singer Peter GabrielFind albums by this artist, this music lost nothing of its remarkable quality and majestic aura. There is no point going into the detailed description of the music or its historic importance as a row model for countless musicians the world over, suffice to say that this is an essential piece of musical history, which deserves to be preserved for future generations, which this Box Set attempts to do. It includes 7 CDs and 6 DVDs: The original five albums are presented on 6 CDs (the last album was a double LP and is a double CD), remastered and remixed from the original studio tapes. The 7th CD includes bonus tracks recorded during this period, both studio and live, which is a holy grail for any Genesis fan. All CDs are hybrid CD / SACD format. The 6 DVDs present the albums in the advanced 5.1 surround sound mix and a plethora of video material captured during this period and recent interviews with the band members. Exquisitely packaged in a luxurious box (same format as the other 2 Box Sets with their later recordings), this limited edition is sure to disappear from the market in matter of weeks, same as the previous Box Sets. Need I say essential?

BBM ~ AROUND THE NEXT DREAM
VIRGIN 724358367324 (Barcode: 724358367324) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1993 - 1994 Released: 2003

This is an expanded reissue / remaster of the only album by the short-lived British BBMFind albums by this artist trio, which comprised of three legendary figures: drummer Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist, bassist / vocalist Jack BruceFind albums by this artist and guitarist / vocalist Gary MooreFind albums by this artist. The original album presented ten tracks and this edition adds four bonus tracks, two of which were recorded live and two others are outtakes. Most of the songs were co-written by Moore and Bruce, some with the help of Kip HanrahanFind albums by this artist and a couple of Blues standards are also present.

The sound and feel of the album is remarkably close to that of the iconic CreamFind albums by this artist, which is hardly surprising. The production is of course much more polished and the almost thirty years separating this trio from Cream made its impact, but overall the resemblance is remarkable, almost as if this could be the album Cream never recorded.

Moore plays some outstanding guitar here, obviously with a wink towards Eric ClaptonFind albums by this artist, and Bruce is in top form singing his heart out, as is Baker beating the hell out of the drums.

For some and incomprehensible reason this album was almost completely ignored at the time of its release in 1994, which proves that music went to the drain by that time, as it is an absolute classic example of the British Rock tradition and formidable Blues-Rock recording.

Overall, this is an absolute marvel of an album, completely neglected and deserving being remembered. It offers brilliant songwriting and superb instrumental performances completely absent from today’s Rock scene. An absolute must in any decent Rock record collection!

The album presents fourteen songs, which were mostly written by Dr. John or co-written with his wife Cat YellenFind albums by this artist, except one song by John MartynFind albums by this artist.

Stylistically this album returns to the early days of Dr. John with his New Orleans idiosyncrasies, Mardi Gras, Voodoo, etc. perfectly combined with Jazzy arrangements. The beautiful throaty voice, keyboards playing and general attitude of Dr. John are absolutely perfectly for these the Funky, Blues soaked, Boogie songs, and are a proof of his enormous talent. Listening to this album is one great thrill from start to finish, and the organ parts are simply delicious.

Overall, this is a little hidden gem of American music, which deserves to be remembered and a lot can be learned from it about how to combine cross-genre musical sources to create a perfect amalgam, which is simply everlasting. Blues, Soul and vocal Jazz enthusiasts should love this album to bits!

Following the success of his previous albums, Hansson decided to pursue a more serious composing career rather then touring with his band. VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR ~ TRISECTOR
VIRGIN 9521030 (Barcode: 5099952103001) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 2007 Released: 2008

Three years after the original Van Der Graaf GeneratorFind albums by this artist reunited and surprised the wold with an excellent new album (PresentFind albums with this title); here they are doing it again. Alas, they are reduced to a trio (Peter HammillFind albums by this artist – vocals, guitars and pianos, Hugh BantonFind albums by this artist – organ and bass and Guy EvansFind albums by this artist – drums), having lost the great David JacksonFind albums by this artist on sax, who was the band’s integral ingredient and is much missed here. Nevertheless the trio manages to produce an excellent album, which will definitely delight the band’s fan base worldwide. Although the writing credits for the album’s contents are assigned to all the three members (except 1 track written by Hammill only), Hammill’s overall influence over the band remains dominant. He delivers his vocals with the usual theatrical abilities, remaining in excellent form. The music is much (and I mean much) rockier than any previous VDGG album, with the heavy organ riffs and energetic drumming driving the up-tempo tracks. But of course there is plenty of quiet contemplative material, typical of Hammill’s writing over the years. The overall sound, although excellent, is kept very retro, creating the illusion that the album was recorded sometime in the 1970s, which of course should delight the band’s fans as well. I can’t imagine any VDDG enthusiast being disappointed by this album, and I’d rather expect a pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed it immensely, especially in view of the fact that it proves again that talent does not go away with age – these veterans can easily blow any of the contemporary Prog or Rock bands off the stage with one blast of their music. Hats off!

KING CRIMSON ~ IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING
VIRGIN KC 1 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

1st album from 1969. Probably the most inportand Prog album of all times and a reference point for generation to follow.
