ALVARADO / KOIVISTOINEN / TUOMARILA ~ ALMA
SVART 208 (Barcode: 6430065588023) ~ FINLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2018 - 2019 Released: 2019

This is a wonderful album by a trio which puts together Argentinean Tango vocalist Martin AlvaradoFind albums by this artist and two Finnish Jazz Masters: saxophonist / composer Eero KoivistoinenFind albums by this artist and pianist / composer Alexi TuomarilaFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven songs, five composed by Koivistoinen and two by Tuomarila, all with lyrics by Alvarado, one by Alvarado and three come from other sources.

The music is a very authentic Jazz-World Fusion adventure, combining the Tango characteristics with Jazzy accompaniment, not trying to sound overtly related to any of the genres but rather creating a new amalgam. The original compositions by both the Finns manage successfully to create a Tango subtext, but also venture into other idioms, like Blues and Latin music.

The intimate setting creates a special ambience, where the vocals and the saxophone / piano accompaniment compliment each other very tightly, presenting plenty of opportunities for solo parts by both instruments, both executed perfectly. Koivistoinen, despite his age, sounds vital and creative, as if untouched by the tides of time, which hopefully will continue for many years to come.

Overall this is a very unique and beautiful project, splendidly executed and reverberating the idea of cross-genre pollination. Argentinean Tango was always spiritually close to Jazz, as already demonstrated by the pioneering work of Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist, and the many fans of this kind of musical bridge will find this album certainly worthy of their attention.

ATOM ACCORDION QUINTET ~ ATOM ACCORDION QUINTET
REQUIEM 120 (Barcode: 5902547013411) ~ POLAND ~ Classical

Recorded: 2015 Released: 2016

This is the debut album by Polish ensemble Atom Accordion QuintetFind albums by this artist, which comprises of accordionist Rafal GrzakaFind albums by this artist and the renowned string quartet called Atom String QuartetFind albums by this artist (violinists Dawid LubowiczFind albums by this artist and Mateusz SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist, violist Michal ZaborskiFind albums by this artist and cellist Krzysztof LenczowskiFind albums by this artist). Together they perform four contemporary Classical compositions by young Polish composers: Mikolaj MajkusiakFind albums by this artist, Piotr WrobelFind albums by this artist, Krzysztof Lenczowski and Nikola KolodziejczykFind albums by this artist. While the works by the Majkusiak and Wrobel are single-piece compositions, the work by Lenczowski is a four-part Quintet and the work by Kolodziejczyk is three-part suite. The album was released simultaneously on two Polish labels: RequiemFind albums on this label Records and DUXFind albums on this label Records

As much as I appreciate the need to expose young composers, which this album is all about, somehow I felt a bit disappointed when the music was over. Contemporary Classical music can be, and often is challenging and groundbreaking but this album has little of these qualities. The sound of accordion and a string quartet works together well but was already explored before, and although the musicians are top class, but the music itself just fails to make a strong impression. Even the music by Lenczowski, who writes wonderful music in the Jazz idiom, somehow does not present his usual excellence here, being simply too conventional, even if it is beautifully melodic and gracefully melancholic. An example of the lack of originality is the very last track on this album (by Kolodziejczyk), which sounds almost exactly like music by Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist with string quartet. Somehow the entire album invokes a kind of a déjà vu symptom.

The album is supposed to offer, according to the enclosed booklet, an amalgam of Classical Music, Folklore and Jazz. There is Classical music in abundance, there are some Folkloristic motifs, but there is certainly no Jazz at all, as there is obviously no improvisation involved since all the music is strictly written. This of course is not a problem by itself, but simply an unnecessary confusion.

Obviously the album has its positive sides as well: a profound European aesthetics, wonderful performances by all five musicians, who are obviously virtuosic players, an excellent recording and sound quality and elegant packaging that includes informative bilingual liner notes.

Overall this is a well done and original presentation of contemporary Polish Classical Music, which can be enjoyed by many Classical Music connoisseurs anywhere in the world and serve as a wonderful calling card of Polish Culture.

RADEK BABORAK / ORQUESTRINA ~ CUATROCIENTAS ESTACIONES DE ASTOR PIAZZOLLA
ANIMAL MUSIC 092 (Barcode: 8594155998807) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Classical

Recorded: 2020 Released: 2021

This is an album by Czech French horn player / arranger / bandleader Radek BaborakFind albums by this artist and his OrquestrinaFind albums by this artist ensemble, which consists of French horn, bass clarinet, a string section and a rhythm section (piano, bass, drums) on all tracks (except the fifth), and additionally vibraphone on the first four tracks, and harp, bassoon and French horn quartet on the last remaining three tracks. The fifth track features a quintet of French horn, viola, cello, bass and piano. The album presents eight compositions by the Argentinean composer Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist, four of which are collectively known as “Cuatro Estaciones Portenas” (Eng. The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires), composed between 1965 and 1970, and additional four unconnected pieces composed between 1959 and 1982. The music was beautifully recorded at the Sono Records studio and engineered by Milan CimfeFind albums by this artist.

Piazzolla remains to me as one of the most misunderstood and misinterpreted 20th Century composers. His commonly known association with the Tango, which was hardly considered as an Art Form by Classically oriented music critics, pushed his musical vision and enormous talent into a “comfort niche” of curiosity, rather than serious musical achievement. But anybody familiar enough with Piazzolla’s music knows, that Tango was his inspiration, but it never limited his compositional skills and soaring imagination and he was able to create not only some of the most expressive and passionate, but also most sophisticated music ever.

This beautiful album is a wonderfully aesthetic attempt to transpose Piazzolla’s music into the European territory, taking it closer to “conventional” Classical approach, without losing any of its beauty, passion and uniqueness. Baborak boldly and very cleverly changes the instrumentation, taking completely away the bandoneon and replacing it by the French horn, two instruments so different and yet apparently bridgeable by an open-minded arranger. Piazzolla’s close relationship with Jazz can be also clearly heard here, although more subtly than the Classical flavor.

Baborak’s French horn performances and the brilliant idea of using a French horn quartet in the last three pieces are tremendously rewarding, adding a brass presence that is rarely heard in the Tango idiom. But of course all the musicians involved are superb instrumentalist and highly sensitive musicians.

This album is another striking example of the brilliant work done by the Czech record label Animal MusicFind albums on this label, under the imaginative direction of its owner Petr OstrouchovFind albums by this artist, who is obviously one of the most open-minded and dedicated music producers in Europe these days.

For Tango lovers this is obviously an absolute must have, offering one of the most original interpretations of Piazzolla’s music ever attempted, but every sensitive music lover should find this album highly fulfilling. The superb sound quality turns it into a euphoric listening experience. Hats off!

BANDONEGRO ~ HOLA ASTOR
SJ 043 (Barcode: 5912596066764) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2019 Released: 2019

This is the third album by Polish Tango ensemble BandonegroFind albums by this artist, which consists of bandoneónist Michal GlowkaFind albums by this artist, violinist Jakub CzechowiczFind albums by this artist, pianist Marek DoleckiFind albums by this artist and bassist Marcin AntkowiakFind albums by this artist. On this album the quartet was expanded to a sextet with the addition of two young Polish Jazz players, guitarist Dawid KostkaFind albums by this artist and drummer Mateusz BrzostowskiFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven tracks, six of which are compositions by Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist and five are original compositions by Antkowiak, all arranged by the ensemble. The album was recorded at the celebrated Monochrom Studio and engineered by Ignacy GruszeckiFind albums by this artist with the usual spectacular sound quality.

Bandonegro formed in 2016 and over time established an international reputation with tours around the world, including Argentina, the cradle of Tango. Musically this album takes the ensemble closer to the Nuevo Tango of Piazzolla and its proximity to Jazz. Both the ensemble´s interpretation of Piazzolla´s compositions and even more so their original compositions are remarkable, especially in view of the idiosyncrasy of the Tango, which one does not expect to be performed authentically by East European musicians, who have culturally nothing in common with the original idiom. Bandonegro prove that love of the music and talent are able to conquer the seemingly impassable cultural gap, which enables them to sound as bona fide Tango performers.

The addition of the Jazz elements is very subtle and quite elegant, and does not impede the natural Tango spirit of the music. To the trained ear, the original compositions by Antkowiak, which constitute the more Jazzed up portion of the album, hide also some understated elements of Slavic origin, which of course is a fascinating element of the music. Whatever this music misses in Argentinean passion, it more than pays back in elegance and subtlety of European origin.

Overall this is a superb album, full of great compositions and superb performances, passionately executed and intelligently put together. For Tango connoisseurs this is an absolute must, but even listeners who would not usually listen to Tango music, this album is both special and beautiful enough to win them over.

As a great lover of the Tango I can´t help but recommend this album wholeheartedly, hoping it will find a warm place in the hearts of as many listeners as possible.

BESTER QUARTET ~ PIAZZOLLA ANGELS
FOR TUNE 0153 (Barcode: 5906395808687) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2021 Released: 2021

This is the twelfth album (second on For TuneFind albums on this label Records) by Polish ensemble Bester QuartetFind albums by this artist, formed in 1997 by accordionist / composer Jaroslaw BesterFind albums by this artist as Cracow Klezmer BandFind albums by this artist. The current lineup also includes violinist Dawid LubowiczFind albums by this artist (see Atom String QuartetFind albums by this artist), bassist Maciej AdamczakFind albums by this artist and drummer Ryszard PalkaFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine tracks, eight of which are compositions by Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist and one by Carlos GardelFind albums by this artist, the most famous Tango singer of all time and composer of several famous Tangos. All the music is arranged by Bester.

Considering the fact that all eleven albums recorded by Bester before this one were one way another connected to the Polish “Jewish” / “Klezmer” tradition, the sudden move towards the Argentinean Tango is quite a surprising one. In the liner notes of the album Bester describes his long fascination with the music of Astor Piazzolla and, as far as I understand, it was the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic, which made him realize it is now or never to turn his dream into reality.

Since I am pretty familiar with many interpretations of Piazzolla’s music, especially those by musicians connected with Jazz, I am happy to say that Bester manages to avoid the worse possible traps connected with such projects. First and foremost, the refuses to mimic or copy Piazzolla’s music and try to sound like a genuine Tango musician, which of course is simply impossible. He takes a lot of liberties with the original music, admittedly all in in good taste, transporting it into much more European Jazz flavored environment and even a modest smile. The resulting music is obviously clearly infused with Piazzolla’s spirit but has its own aesthetics. Although Bester’s accordion sounds still similar to the sound of the bandoneon, the violin parts are full of European lyricism deeply rooted in Classical music, and the rhythm section adds the Jazzy spice to the proceedings, which is completely absent in the Tango idiom, which uses guitar and piano all absent here. Even the “Funky” mandolin works fine ;)

Of course one might question these liberties, but as long as Bester is not claiming to play like Piazzolla, but only submit to his magic and insert his own interpretation, for me these liberties work well and are not offending or sacrilegious. Combined with the superb musicianship this album boasts with, I’d say that there is very little of “not to like” here. Piazzolla’s genius is so overwhelming, that it manages to withstand much more abusive treatment than what was applied here.

Overall, this is a pleasant, beautifully played and recorded tribute to one of the greatest geniuses of 20th Century music, which comes here with a Polish “twist”, which I find quite entertaining and tasteful, and which is surely one of Bester’s best achievements so far.

ZBIGNIEW CHOJNACKI ~ ELEKTROTROPIZM
FOR TUNE 0076 (Barcode: 5902768701784) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2015 Released: 2015

This is the debut album by Polish accordionist / composer Zbigniew ChojnackiFind albums by this artist, which presents him playing solo accordion with some use of electronics. The album comprises of six tracks, all composed by Chojnacki, four of which are part of a suite and the other two are unrelated.

From the very first moments of this album it becomes immediately apparent that Chojnacki presents a completely unconventional and novel approach to accordion as far as playing the instrument is concerned, as well as making music in general. The fascinating sounds he is able to produce are absolutely stunning, but even more so is the music, which takes the listener on a transcendental journey toward new and unchartered sound vistas.

This music is so different and so engulfing that when listening to it for the first time the listener is completely left to his own frame of reference, as nothing is able to prepare him to what this music has to offer. A deeper analysis and later reflection allows one to understand the path this music takes, from the traditional role of the accordion in European music towards its influence in World Music, Jazz and other areas, via such notable accordion and bandoneón players like Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist, Dino SaluzziFind albums by this artist, Art Van DammeFind albums by this artist and others.

We use the terms "groundbreaking" and "innovative" way too often, but his music truly deserves to be described in these terms. It presents a completely new frame of reference as far as accordion is concerned and by the time this music reaches the audience the meaning of this term will be completely transferred. Breakthroughs of this magnitude are way too far apart and it is a privilege to witness one of them in real time.

The way Chojnacki plays his instrument brings fond associations of the 1960s, when the great Jazz pioneers were taking bold steps like those taken on this album. Sadly, half a Century later, musicians are ready to push the boundaries of known universe only very rarely. This album is one of such rare occasions.

Although both guitarists are mostly known for their activity in Jazz-Rock Fusion, this album presents them in a Jazz setting, partly acoustic and partly electric. The result is a beautiful conversation of two Masters, both technically and aesthetically awe inspiring. The music on this album was written by Coryell and Catherine, but they also play one Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist composition (on this track the German piano giant Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist appears as a guest) and a striking version of a Django ReinhardtFind albums by this artist tune. DECO ENSEMBLE ~ LIQUIDO
RECART 0032 (Barcode: 5908285287312) ~ UK ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2017 - 2018 Released: 2019

This is the second album by the London based international quintet Deco EnsembleFind albums by this artist, dedicated to interpretation of the Argentinean Nuevo Tango. The quintet comprises of Polish accordionist Bartosz GlowackiFind albums by this artist, Spanish violinist Lucia VeintimillaFind albums by this artist, Spanish-French pianist Ricardo GosalboFind albums by this artist, Spanish bassist Elena MarigomezFind albums by this artist and British guitarist Rob LuftFind albums by this artist. The album presents twelve compositions, four of which are by Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist, including the three part devil´s cycle, two compositions each are by contemporary Argentinean Nuevo Tango composers Ramiro GalloFind albums by this artist and Emiliano GrecoFind albums by this artist and three original compositions are by the ensemble´s member Ricardo Gosalbo. The title track was composed by the Argentinean Jazz / Tango pianist / composer Diego SchissiFind albums by this artist.

The music is, as expected, absolutely wonderful and even breathtaking at times, both due to the excellent selection of material and the level of the original compositions, and of course by the masterful execution by these virtuosi players. The guitar is the obvious Jazz element of the quintet and Luft´s parts are absolute gems, whereas the rest of the ensemble members show obvious Classical Music mannerisms. Personally I find the music to be a tad too cerebral at times, and miss the Tango fire and mischievous attitude, but this elegant European treatment of the Tango elements has without a doubt a very specific charm.

Overall this is a superb Tango album, a bit "tamed" perhaps but gloriously musical and elegant, which should keep all the hardcore connoisseurs of the genre perfectly happy. For people new to the Tango, especially those coming from Classical Music, this is a wonderful introduction to the idiom.

AL DI MEOLA ~ ELEGANT GYPSY & MORE - LIVE
EAR MUSIC 4029759122494 (Barcode: 4029759122494) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2017 Released: 2018

This is a live album by American guitar hero Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, recorded during his 2017 US tour, on which he was supported by a splendid group of musicians, which included keyboardist Phil MagallanesFind albums by this artist, percussionist Gumbi OrtizFind albums by this artist, bassist Elias TonaFind albums by this artist, drummer Luis AliceaFind albums by this artist and violinist Evan GarrFind albums by this artist. Keyboardist Philippe SaisseFind albums by this artist replaces Magallanes on three tracks. The album presents ten tracks, seven of which were composed by Di Meola, one is by Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist, another one is by Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist and finally one is a surprising gesture towards Led ZeppelinFind albums by this artist. The recording quality and sound are a bit loud, but appropriate for the energy that prevailed on stage.

As the title suggests, Di Meola revisits three tracks from his 2nd solo album “Elegant GypsyFind albums with this title”, one from the “Kiss My AxeFind albums with this title” album and the rest reflect the entire span of his long career, including his stint with Corea, his fascination with Piazzolla and his early Rock influences. All the compositions have been rearranged and “upgraded” to contemporary sound and speeded up to contemporary steroidal tempi.

All the musicians are of course superb performers and Di Meola lost nothing of his phenomenal abilities and virtuosity, so the album becomes a nice nostalgic trip down memory lane and a showcase of spine-chilling guitar pyrotechnics, which should keep Di Meola’s fans utterly happy.

Overall, this is an excellent live recording of the Jazz-Rock Fusion chapter of Di Meola’s splendid chapter. Personally I much prefer his laid-back, acoustic Jazz-World Fusion recordings, which are absolutely stunning, but of course it is very difficult not to enjoy this facet of his career, which brought him to the world’s attention at the first place.

AL DI MEOLA ~ FLESH ON FLESH
TELARC 83543 (Barcode: 089408354328) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Ever since Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist’s early days as a member of Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist’s Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist (with whom he recorded three splendid albums in the mid-1970s: Where Have I Known You BeforeFind albums with this title, No MysteryFind albums with this title and Romantic WarriorFind albums with this title) and then as a solo recording artist since 1976, his output has been consistently excellent. This remarkable career now stretches over 4 decades and Al seems to be going as strong as ever. A master of both the electric and the acoustic guitar, Di Meola refined his style over the years. Finesse and delicacy, replaced the youthful zest and energy, as demonstrated on his early albums by his guitar pyrotechnics. The love of Fusion was expanded and enriched by love of World Music, which presents an infinite source of inspiration. The 1990s saw Di Meola getting involved extensively with World Music, when he formed his group called World Sinfonia (with some of the best musicians from all over the world) and recorded a tribute to the great Argentinean composer Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist. In 1998 Di Meola signed with the excellent TelarcFind albums on this label label, famous for it’s superb sound recording quality, and this is his 4th release on that label. As usual the music is a tasty mixture of fiery Fusion and elegant World Music. Di Meola switches between the acoustic and electric guitar according the mood of the music. Also as usual, he includes some distinguished guests to play along with, this time the legendary Cuban keyboards player Gonzalo RubalcabaFind albums by this artist (who adds some of his own fire to the proceedings) and veteran bass virtuoso Anthony JacksonFind albums by this artist, who played with Di Meola on his early Fusion albums. Although Di Meola usually writes all the music on his albums, this time a Chick Corea composition was also included to celebrate the Di Meola / Jackson reunion. All together another triumphant achievement for Al and a superb musical experience. Most warmly recommended.

Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist’s amazing talents as composer and guitarist have been with us since the early 1970s, when he captured the world’s attention as the guitarist of Return To ForeverFind albums by this artist. After leaving RTF in late 1976 Di Meola started to record a series of solo albums, alternating between acoustic and electric guitar. In fact this is a second album in which Di Meola pays tribute to the Argentinean genius Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist. Although only four of the included tracks were composed by Piazzolla, the rest of the music, composed by Di Meola, is close in spirit to the Master’s legacy. This is a live album by American guitarist / composer / bandleader Al Di MeolaFind albums by this artist, recorded live in Morocco with his World SinfoniaFind albums by this artist ensemble and local guests. The ensemble includes accordionist Fausto BeccalossiFind albums by this artist, guitarist Peo AlfonsiFind albums by this artist, bassist Victor MirandaFind albums by this artist, percussionist Gumbi OrtizFind albums by this artist and drummer Peter KaszasFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight tracks, seven of which are original compositions by Di Meola and one is by Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist.

The music is nothing short of sublime, especially with the live ambience, continuing Di Meola’s fascination of World Music, especially the Mediterranean musical cultures. The brilliant amalgam of Flamenco, Spanish, Italian, Eastern European and Arabic elements is completely unique and this period of recordings with the World Sinfonia is definitely the most refined and satisfying in his long and prolific career.

Although the local guest musician’s contributions are only marginal, they add to the entire atmosphere of Word unity in music, strengthened by the enthusiastically worm reception by the audience. The concert was also released in video version, for those interested.

Overall, this is spectacular illustration of how music can be completely borderless and universal, and how well it can work together regardless of its origin. Di Meola is not only a great virtuoso, but perhaps more importantly a superb integrator of World Cultures, for which he deserves the highest applaud. This album is a must to all Jazz-World Fusion fans.

The album marks a dramatic change in Di Meola’s musical direction, switching exclusively to acoustic guitar and choosing Jazz-World Fusion as his main interest, often playing tribute to the legendary Argentinean bandoneonist / composer Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist.

The music is absolutely exquisite and Di Meola obviously embraces the World Music elements wholeheartedly. Despite the delicate, intimate and almost minimalist setting, the music is rich and embraces many melodic and rhythmic tapestries, which sound absolutely marvelously and lost nothing of their grace and elegance over time. It is one of my favorite Di Meola albums since the day of its release.

Overall, this is a beautiful and highly influential Jazz-World Fusion album, which presents Di Meola not only as a Master guitar player, but also as a great composer. Strongly influenced by South American elements, it is one of his best albums, and offers a brilliant voyage, which is everlastingly enchanting. For Jazz-World Fusion fans and guitar aficionados, this album is an absolute must!

NOAM ELRON ~ FLUCTUATION
NOT ON LABEL ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz-World Fusion

This is the debut album by Israeli Jazz bassist / composer Noam ElronFind albums by this artist recorded in a quartet setting with flautist Hadar NoibergFind albums by this artist, guitarist Dima GorelikFind albums by this artist and drummer Noam LandsmanFind albums by this artist. Yohai CohenFind albums by this artist plays the daf (a Middle-Eastern drum) on a couple of tracks. The album presents eight pieces, six of which are originals by Elron, one is co-composed by Elron and Gorelik and one is an Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist composition.

As most of Jazz albums created in Israel, also this one presents a strong World Music influence, mostly of Spanish but also of Middle Eastern origins. The intimate atmosphere and almost completely acoustic sound dominates the proceedings, which enables the listener to hear every singular sound made by the musicians. Noiberg and Gorelik, who are the main soloists of course, perform passionately and elegantly both on the calm and the up tempo numbers, with the rhythm section providing the solid backing, which drives the music forward. The most fascinating aspect of this album is its polyrhythmic nature, which perhaps requires a more advanced listener to comprehend the complexity, but is definitely fascinating.

In retrospect this is one more of the many excellent Israeli Jazz albums that somehow managed to be passed by almost unnoticed, which of course is a great pity. Sadly the miniscule local Jazz scene is simply overwhelmed with local talent, absolutely unable to cope with its richness and versatility. With some luck this album might have been very well received on the European market at the time, but alas that never happened. Since music of such quality does not expire with time, I urge all the listeners who like challenging original music, which is completely non-conservative, to seek a copy of this little gem ASAP.

These days Elron is a member of the superb ensemble SavannahFind albums by this artist And The Stringz, which is also a unique piece of Israeli music worth discovering. Perhaps it´s about time to consider another solo effort to follow this one?

The songs are all stunningly beautiful, intimate and lyrical and the vocalist performs them with a minimalistic accompaniment mostly of just guitar, bass and drums. On some songs her voice is multi-tracked to create a vocal harmony effect. The entire album is soaked in deep melancholy and introvert unfussiness, which is immensely effective, using a most convincing "more is less" modus operandi.

Although not Jazz per se, this music is closely associated with the Jazz idiom, as it possesses an intrinsic feeling of Swing, and of course the presence of the Jazz musicians on board also makes a significant impact. Regardless of the labeling one might associate with this album, it is a true joy and I wish many more albums like that were recorded.

Overall this is a very unique collection of gorgeous songs, performed by a great team of musicians and sung by the person who composed the material, in a most non-pretentious personal way, which makes the listener´s heart melt. Loved every minute if it! Well done!

BARTOSZ GLOWACKI ~ GENESIS
DUX 1585 (Barcode: 5902547015859) ~ POLAND ~ Classical

Recorded: 2018 Released: 2019

This is the debut album by Polish (based in London) accordionist Bartosz GlowackiFind albums by this artist. Most of the music is performed on solo accordion, except for the last piece which also includes guitar and string orchestra. The repertoire includes works by such diverse composers as Domenico ScarlattiFind albums by this artist, Jean Philippe RameauFind albums by this artist, Vaclav TrojanFind albums by this artist, Sofia GubaidulinaFind albums by this artist, Arvo PartFind albums by this artist, Victor VlasovFind albums by this artist and finally Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist – from Baroque via Avant-Garde to Tango.

The music is absolutely delightful and taking into account the fact that these compositions are very rarely performed and even more so get recorded, this is a wonderful opportunity to get exposed to some exquisite non-trivial music.

Glowacki´s playing is also extraordinary, and he seems to overcome effortlessly the many challenges involved with performing this often difficult music. His tone follows the mood of the compositions, always with great taste and true artistry, placing the much neglected accordion in the center of the listener´s attention and paying tribute to its full glory as an instrument.

For accordion connoisseurs this album is an absolute must, but any serious music lover should be able to discover these little known gems, which deserve to be cherished. Wholeheartedly recommended!

ASTOR PIAZZOLLA / GARY BURTON ~ THE NEW TANGO
WEA 55069 (Barcode: 022925506924) ~ ARGENTINA ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 1986 Released: 1987

Argentinean composer and bandoneón player Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist was one of the most important musicians of the 20th Century and his magnificent work contributed immensely to the popularization of the Argentinean tango in particular but also World Music in general. Piazzolla´s music always had strong ties with Jazz and this special project recorded at the Montreux Festival serves as a magnificent example of coexistence between the two worlds. Selecting the vibraphone virtuoso Gary BurtonFind albums by this artist as a guest soloist, Piazzolla composed a new suite for vibraphone and his New Tango Quintet, which is performed here with flare and passion. Music connoisseurs need little encouragement here, as this is a superb piece of music by any standard. Wholeheartedly recommended!

ADAM WENDT ACOUSTIC SET ~ ACOUSTIC TRAVEL
SOLITON 367 (Barcode: 5901571093673) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz-World Fusion

Recorded: 2013 Released: 2014

This is the sixth album as a leader by veteran Polish Jazz saxophonist / composer Adam WendtFind albums by this artist, recorded in an acoustic setting with his trio which features accordionist Pawel ZaganczykFind albums by this artist and bassist Jaroslaw StokowskiFind albums by this artist. Three guest musicians are heard on a few tracks: vocalist Laura Cubi VillenaFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Tomasz WendtFind albums by this artist and euphonium player Grzegorz NagorskiFind albums by this artist. The album presents twelve tracks, ten of which are originals by Wendt (two of which are repeated in vocal and instrumental versions) and two come from the Jazz-World repertoire, composed one each by Richard GallianoFind albums by this artist and Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist. Villena wrote the lyrics for the three songs she performs on the album.

The music is a Jazz-World Fusion / Smooth Jazz effort, presenting a set of nice melodic compositions by the leader, all of which have a South American feel about them, mostly associated with the Tango. Wendt has a beautiful saxophone tone but his improvisations are limited within the melodic "safe" zone. It´s great to hear the accordion, which is such beautiful and yet so neglected instrument in the Jazz idiom. The bass plays clean and precise backing notes and keeps the trio well together.

Overall this is a pleasant album, which offers no innovation or exploration whatsoever, staying well within the mainstream formula at all times but on the other hand it is very well executed and is very accessible for listeners who are well outside of the strict Jazz milieu.
