  | JAN AKKERMAN ~ JAN AKKERMAN WEA 242360 (Barcode: 022924236020) ~ NETHERLANDS ~ Progressive Rock Recorded: 1976 Released: 2000
5th album by the eclectic Dutch guitar genius Jan AkkermanFind albums by this artist recorded at the same sessions that produced the album EliFind albums with this title, but using a set of different players. This was Akkerman’s first step into the world of Fusion, which would be his main area of activity for the next few years. He invited the phenomenal German keyboards player Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist (a friendship and cooperation that was to last for many years), the Italian drummer Bruno CastelucciFind albums by this artist and percussionist Neppie NoyaFind albums by this artist – all three were very active on the European Fusion scene – to take part in the recording and the result was a mixture of instrumental Prog and Fusion with brilliant soloing all over. Akkerman wrote all the music, which includes some of his best fine crafted melodies. The album also served as a basis for creation of the Jan Akkerman Band, which performed all across Europe and was later recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival (his next release). Essential for Akkerman and FocusFind albums by this artist fans.

  | ASSOCIATION P.C. / JEREMY STEIG ~ MAMA KUKU PROMISING MUSIC 44100 (Barcode: 602517542846) ~ NETHERLANDS ~ Jazz Recorded: 1973 Released: 2008
Association P.C.Find albums by this artist was one of several multi-national Jazz groups active in Europe during the late 1960 / 1970 explosive period of creative activity, which resulted in establishment of the European Jazz and its emancipation from the American Jazz traditions. With Britain as one epicenter of the new music, Netherlands, Germany and France were the other one. Their geographic proximity enabled the existence of multi-national groups, as the musicians were able to meet, rehearse and tour, all within a driving distance from their respective homes. These countries also had a common cultural background, which served as common bond between the musicians. The original group was formed by Dutch drummer Pierre CourboisFind albums by this artist (his initials are in the group’s name) with fellow Dutch players Jasper van`t HofFind albums by this artist – keyboards and Peter KrijnenFind albums by this artist – bass and the German guitarist Toto BlankeFind albums by this artist. Krijnen was soon replaced by German bass virtuoso Siggi BushFind albums by this artist. After van’t Hof left the group to form his own outfit (the legendary Pork PieFind albums by this artist), he was replaced by German keyboardist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist. The group recorded five albums, four of them on the legendary MPSFind albums on this label label, and this was the last of them. The idea for recording an album with American flautist Jeremy SteigFind albums by this artist was initiated by the legendary Jazz critic and resident MPS producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, who heard Steig perform at the Munich Jazz Festival, which was organized as one of the events for the Munich Olympic Games in 1972. Berendt was always looking for unusual musical combinations and inspired the (then) forming European Jazz scene by his unequivocal support and prophetic vision. Steig, although American, was always associated with the Avant-Garde and pursued his own search to expand his horizons beyond the stagnant Jazz mainstream. Therefore his rapport with the young European musicians, who were also on a quest to discover the unknown, happened naturally, as Berendt envisioned. The album was recorded live, another wise decision by Berendt, as the character of the music simply suited a spontaneous situation perfectly. Although Association P.C. is often associated with the European Jazz-Rock Fusion (probably due to the fact that electric guitar and keyboards were used), is fact the group had nothing to do with that genre. Blanke and Kuhn will later on play in or lead Jazz-Rock Fusion ensembles, but in that group they played quite a different sort of music, trying to expand Free Jazz (which served as a departure point) into Improvised Music. Steig understood that instinctively and cooperated beautifully. The peak of the album is reached on the 21+ minutes long spontaneously improvised piece, which was the original B-side of the LP. The performances are of course inspired and uplifting, as the musicians were all virtuosi and masters of their trade in spite of their young age. In retrospect the album caught for posterity a glorious moment and a fragment of what was happening on the European scene at the time, which makes it an immensely important document, in addition to being a superb musical experience, completely relevant to this very day. Kudos to Promising MusicFind albums on this label for the excellent remaster and elegant packaging of the reissue. A must!

  | HARRY BECKETT ~ MAXINE ITM 920010 (Barcode: 4250079750108) ~ UK ~ Jazz Recorded: 1987 - 1995 Released: 2011
This is an album by British Jazz trumpeter / composer Harry BeckettFind albums by this artist, released shortly after his death. It presents a compilation of seven tracks, recorded between 1987 and 1995 with five different lineups, ranging between a quintet and a duo. In fact, it is a reissue of the 1993 album “Les Jardins Du CasinoFind albums with this title” with two tracks form the 1996 album “Compared 2 What?Find albums with this title”.
Two tracks were recorded by a quintet with trombonist Annie WhiteheadFind albums by this artist, flautist / saxophonist John BurgesFind albums by this artist, bassist Marco CastronariFind albums by this artist and drummer Winston CliffordFind albums by this artist. Another two tracks were recorded by a trio with German pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and French bassist Jean-Francois Jenny-ClarkFind albums by this artist. One track was recorded by a duo with pianist Django BatesFind albums by this artist, another one by a duo with pianist Chris McGregorFind albums by this artist and finally one track by a quintet with saxophonist Courtney PineFind albums by this artist, McGregor, bassist Fred Thelonious BakerFind albums by this artist and drummer Clifford JarvisFind albums by this artist.
The music in incredibly diverse stylistically, from mainstream balladry to intense modern Jazz improvisation, but the focus is on Beckett’s superb trumpet / flugelhorn performances, which are consistently breathtaking, despite the changing lineups and stylistic variations.
Personally, my favorite tracks are those with Joachim Kuhn, but all the music is truly delightful and should make every Jazz enthusiast happy. It would be a crime to leave these tracks unreleased, so it’s great to see them available, for us to enjoy and cherish. Warmly recommended.

  | ORNETTE COLEMAN / JOACHIM KUHN ~ COLORS HARMOLODIC 731453778924 (Barcode: 731453778924) ~ USA ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 1996 Released: 1997
This is a live album by the duo of American saxophonist / composer Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist and German pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight tracks, all of which were composed by Coleman.
The album presents a truly epic meeting between two great representatives of the Free Jazz / Improvised Music idiom, who although separated by the Euro-American cultural gap and a generation gap seem to be performing as if they knew each other since birth. Kuhn (born 1944) admits that Coleman (born 1930) was one of his greatest musical inspirations when his perception of the Jazz idiom was first formed, much more than other Jazz musicians who are traditionally considered as Jazz influencers, and who are supposed to have inspired everything that is considered as Jazz music. Well, of course neither Coleman nor Kuhn are in any sense “typical” Jazz musicians, and thank God for that.
The symbiosis between the two Giants is completely natural and the music they create flows smoothly and organically. Coleman plays trumpet and violin in addition to the alto saxophone, switching instruments at will, and Kuhn races all over the keyboard like the Wizard of Oz, and the wall of sound they create sounds perfectly logical and even melodic (or rather harmolodic), with the duo sounding as a one four-handed persona, inseparable and entirely of one mind. This album is one of the most dramatic examples of the “Art of the Duo” in its purest and most perfect form.
Overall, this is a stunning album, which no Improvising Music connoisseur should miss in their record collection. The sound quality of the recording is perfect and brilliantly clear, which allows for all the nuances in this complex music to be perfectly audible. It is beyond recommendation…

  | LARRY CORYELL / PHILIP CATHERINE ~ SPLENDID WOUNDED BIRD 0153 (Barcode: 664140015326) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1978 Released: 2007
2nd album by this magnificent guitar duo: American Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist and Belgian Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, both established virtuosi with impressive record, who cooperate here to combine their talents in order to create a whole, which is even greater than the sum of its parts. Although both guitarists are mostly known for their activity in Jazz-Rock Fusion, this album presents them in a Jazz setting, partly acoustic and partly electric. The result is a beautiful conversation of two Masters, both technically and aesthetically awe inspiring. The music on this album was written by Coryell and Catherine, but they also play one Astor PiazzollaFind albums by this artist composition (on this track the German piano giant Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist appears as a guest) and a striking version of a Django ReinhardtFind albums by this artist tune. Guitar enthusiasts will find this album essential listening, but it is most interesting to every Jazz lover. This album was unavailable for so many years and seeing it back in circulation is a great pleasure. This is surely one of the most essential guitar albums out there!

  | EUROPEAN JAZZ ENSEMBLE ~ 30TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR 2006 KONNEX 5225 (Barcode: 4017867031876) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 2006 Released: 2009
The European Jazz EnsembleFind albums by this artist is a "cooperative" group of top European Jazz musicians, which tours and records together for the last 30 years. Over time, an incredible parade of talent passed through the ranks of this group, each of the musicians being a leader and acknowledged instrumentalist / composer of the highest statue. The list of the players on this album, for example, is truly scary for anyone familiar with European Jazz: Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist, Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist, Gerd DudekFind albums by this artist and Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist (the only non-European by birth but very much so by spirit) on saxophone, Jiri StivinFind albums by this artist on flute, Manfred SchoofFind albums by this artist and Pino MinafraFind albums by this artist on trumpet, Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist on piano, Ali HaurandFind albums by this artist on bass, and Daniel HumairFind albums by this artist and Tony LevinFind albums by this artist on drums. These brilliant musicians perform a set of no less brilliant compositions, with predictably brilliant arrangements – what can I say, the album is just one nasty piece of superb music, kicking badly from start to finish. Although basically the performances are by a big band, in truth the individual soloist are given plenty of opportunity to stretch out, backed up only by the rhythm section, which makes this album likeable even for people, who have a slight adversity to big band albums (God only knows why). Regardless of ones specific likes and dislikes might be, this is a kind of recording that any true Jazz fan can not ignore. The subtle musical trickery, known only by the European Jazzers, is so obvious here, that I´d recommend this album to every American big band fan, to learn what really can be achieved with such potent "instrument". Brilliant! (Oh yes, I already said so…).

  | EUROPEAN JAZZ ENSEMBLE ~ MEETS THE KHAN FAMILY M.A MUSIC 807 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 1992 Released: 1992
This is a live album by the European Jazz EnsembleFind albums by this artist, a collective of Jazz musicians led by German bassist Ali HaurandFind albums by this artist (who died in 2018), which included in its various configurations since 1976 the absolute crème de la crème of European Jazz representatives. The lineup on this album comprises, in addition to Haurand, of trumpeters Thomas HebererFind albums by this artist, Manfred SchoofFind albums by this artist and Rainer WinterschladenFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Ernst-Ludwig PetrowskyFind albums by this artist, Gerd DudekFind albums by this artist and Stan SulzmannFind albums by this artist, guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, pianists Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and Rob van den BroeckFind albums by this artist, vocalist Uschi BruningFind albums by this artist and drummer Tony LevinFind albums by this artist (of the twelve musicians two are British, one Belgian and one Dutch, and the rest are Germans). On this album they invited three Indian musicians, members of the extended Khan family: Ustad Zamir Ahmed KhanFind albums by this artist on sitar, Irshad Hussain KhanFind albums by this artist on tabla and Ustad Munir KhanFind albums by this artist on sarangi. The album presents four tracks, two lasing over fifteen minutes and two over twenty minutes, one each composed by Danish trumpeter Allan BotschinskyFind albums by this artist (a former member of the ensemble), Sultzmann, Kuhn and Schoof.
The music is a wonderful example of Jazz-World Fusion, with the entire ensemble and the guests offer a group improvisation based on pre-composed themes, but expanding the music way beyond the original melodies, as expected. The ensemble plays some parts in a Big Band manner, but most of the time the music involves group improvisations between the ensemble members and the guests, often flying far and away from the initial source.
Since all the musicians on this album are superb instrumentalists, the level of the performances is nothing short of stunning. All the albums by this ensemble are excellent documents of the diversity and complexity of the European scene, and here they are able to create new cross-genre musical explorations.
Overall, this is a very interesting and rather unique Jazz-World Music album, which presents a meeting between Big Band Jazz and Indian traditional music, which usually is performed in a much more intimate lineup. These musicians prove again that music has no stylistic borders, and gifted musicians are able to communicate within any musical environment without any obstacles. Wholeheartedly recommended!

  | GEORGE GRUNTZ ~ RENAISSANCE MAN TCB 22162 (Barcode: 725095221627) ~ SWITZERLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1961 - 2001 Released: 2002
This is a wonderful archive album by Swiss pianist / composer / bandleader George GruntzFind albums by this artist, which presents a collection of fifteen recordings spread over a period of forty years, most of which have never been released before. The include intimate formats but mostly European Big Bands and Orchestras, like his Concert Jazz BandFind albums by this artist, WDR Big BandFind albums by this artist, NDR Big BandFind albums by this artist and others. The many participants include such legendary Jazz artists as pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, vocalist Sheila JordanFind albums by this artist, bandoneónist Dino SaluzziFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Alan SkidmoreFind albums by this artist and Ernst-Ludwig PetrowskyFind albums by this artist and many others.
The music displays the outstanding talents of Gruntz as pianist, arranger and composer, presenting beautifully diverse music, which includes mainstream Jazz, orchestral Jazz and Jazz-World Fusion pieces, always executed with finesse and absolute charm. Therefore this album is a wonderful introduction to the many talents of Gruntz for listeners not familiar with his work but also a gorgeous collection of previously unavailable recordings for those already familiar with his achievements.
Gruntz was always the epitome of European Jazz as one of its Godfathers, perfectly combining the American Jazz tradition with the European Classical and Folklore traditions. The recordings included herein are all exquisite examples of what European Jazz is all about, stylistically and conceptually. Although the collected pieces have seemingly nothing in common, they amalgamate into a perfect kaleidoscope of modern European Jazz
Personally I can get never enough of Gruntz and his music, so this album is simply one more token of memory by this great Artist, who is sadly relatively little known to most Jazz listeners around the world. In addition his recordings are not easily available as well, which makes the task of keeping his memory alive even harder.
Overall this is a brilliant collection of excellent music, which deserves a proud place in any serious music collection. Not to be missed!

  | CHRIS HINZE ~ SENANG KEYTONE 794 (Barcode: 8713094793001) ~ NETHERLANDS ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 1996 Released: 1996
This is an album by Dutch flautist / keyboardist / composer / bandleader Chris HinzeFind albums by this artist, recorded with a plethora of guest musicians / friends from all over the world, including American saxophonist Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist, German pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, American saxophonist Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist, Hungarian saxophonist Tony LakatosFind albums by this artist, Dutch trumpeter Eric VloeimansFind albums by this artist and many others, including vocalists, percussionist, a choir, a string quartet etc.
The music is a wild mixture of Funky tunes with ethnic elements from many regions, strong percussive pulsations, brilliant Jazz soloing by the guest musicians, in short a unique amalgam of influences, which works together splendidly, and is even danceable, if needed.
Hinze is closely associated with Far East cultural influences, which he absorbed during his travels to the region, as well as meditative techniques and spiritual trends, but his music is always close to the Jazz influences he absorbed during his early days. His group Chris Hinze CombinationFind albums by this artist remains as one of the most important European Jazz and Jazz-Rock Fusion ensembles of the 1970s. Over the years he managed to record an impressive amount of albums, all of which are worth investigation.
Overall, this is a wonderful magic carpet ride above our globe, accompanied by splendid music performed by some of the best Jazz and World Music artists, which flows smoothly and is over way too soon!

  | KUHN & KRUGLOV ~ MOSCOW ACT 9623 (Barcode: 614427962324) ~ GERMANY ~ Avant-Garde Jazz Recorded: 2012 Released: 2014
This is a beautiful album by the duo comprising of German pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and the Russian saxophonist Alexey KruglovFind albums by this artist, released as part of the "Duo Art" series by the German ACTFind albums on this label label, which cultivates the "Art of the Duo" Jazz tradition. The unplanned recording which spontaneously followed Kuhn´s concert in Moscow, where he was joined by Kruglov for a few numbers, was recorded next day "live in the studio" with almost all of the music captured at first take. The album presents eight compositions, three each by Kuhn and Kruglov and two by Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist. The music was spectacularly recorded at the Moscow Radio and offers a breathtaking sound quality.
Although separated by a generation gap, Kuhn (born 1944) and Kruglov (born 1979) were able to bridge everything that separated them and become a one-body musical unit, as if they performed together for ages, despite the fact that this was their first meeting. The telepathic conversation between them is truly unprecedented and results in a storming emotional experience, expressed within the music they make together.
There is a wonderful balance and rapport within the duo and the two musicians compliment each other perfectly. Whenever Kuhn explores Free Form vistas Kruglov support him playing relatively traditionally and vice versa, and sometimes they both spontaneously improvise together, only to return to the melody at the same precise moment.
This meeting was obviously a rare occasion, and the fact this music was captured is a miracle, which of course in not such a rare situation in Jazz, which is after all the Art of the unexpected.
Overall this is one of the must spectacular "Art of the Duo" encounters and is a classic example of the idiom, as well as an incredible listening experience, which no true Jazz connoisseur should miss. Absolutely essential!

  | JOACHIM KUHN ~ ALLEGRO VIVACE ACT 9750 (Barcode: 614427975027) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 2003 Released: 2005
This is a solo piano album by veteran German Jazz pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, one of the great pioneers of modern European Jazz and one of my favorite musicians since decades. On the album Kuhn plays his interpretations of Classical music by Francois CouperinFind albums by this artist, Johann Sebastian BachFind albums by this artist and Wolfgang Amadeus MozartFind albums by this artist, classic Jazz music by John ColtraneFind albums by this artist and Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist and finally his original compositions, all with the same passion and unique approach to the instrument. The music was recorded during one studio session and offers a superb sound quality.
For many of Kuhn´s fans this album might come as a surprise, as it presents him in one of his calmest and most introvert moments of his career, gently stroking the keyboard, as if hesitating before making his next move, in complete contrast to the usual energetic and almost hyperactive self. As the result of this unique approach the listener is exposed to the contemplative side of Joachim Kuhn, which is a revelation.
Obviously Kuhn treats the Classical pieces with a dose of liberty and perspective, which turns out to be way more interesting than a note for note treatment, which would only prove his technical ability to play Classical scores, rather than his ability to understand and feel the music, turning it into his very own on the fly. There is certain amount of frivolity and humor involved of course, which is truly a great fun.
His treatment of the Jazz pieces are much closer to what Kuhn is know for, but of course his enormous sensitivity turns that music into a fountain of emotions sprinkling European Jazz aesthetics. Kuhn transforms the Jazz tunes into wonderful mini piano suites, which are superb examples of his ability to cross genres with ease and elegance.
Obviously the last part of the album, where Kuhn plays his own music, is the absolute pinnacle, as nothing is better than Kuhn playing Kuhn. Limited only by his own imagination Kuhn stretches out his wings and soars to the sky lifted by his pieces. His virtuosity and improvisational powers come to full bloom here and the concentration of energy and emotion are truly electrifying.
Overall this is a beautiful solo piano album, which all connoisseurs of this particular genre should try and get a copy of, and of course cherish. Although Kuhn is a very prolific artist, this is definitely one of his most intriguing recordings and as such is highly recommended.

  | JOACHIM KUHN ~ BIRTHDAY EDITION ACT 6017 (Barcode: 614427601728) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1987 - 1995 Released: 2014
This album celebrates the 70th Birthday of the German Jazz pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist. The first album of this 2CD set presents recordings by the Kuhn trio with French bassist Jean-Francois Jenny-ClarkFind albums by this artist and Swiss drummer Daniel HumairFind albums by this artist, recorded live at the Jazzfest Berlin in 1987 and 1995. The second album is a re-edition of the brilliant Jazz symphony "EuropeanaFind albums with this title", composed by the renowned British composer Michael GibbsFind albums by this artist and performed by a dream team of European Jazz musicians, including Kuhn´s trio with Jenny-Clark and Norwegian drummer Jon ChristensenFind albums by this artist and many soloists like German trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, French accordionist Richard GallianoFind albums by this artist and others, with the NDR Philharmonic Orchestra. This album was originally recorded in 1994 and released in 1995.
Kuhn, who left East Germany in 1966 to join his older brother Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, who was already living in West Germany, became in time one of the most prolific and influential German and European Jazz musicians. Kuhn, who started as an avant-gardist and Free Jazz enthusiast went through a Jazz-Rock Fusion phase during the 1970s, being one of the pioneers of that genre at the time, returned to advanced Jazz explorations later on, and is to this day considered as one of the top European Jazz artists.
The piano trio album is a superb example of the modern approach to this seemingly simple setting, which treats the instruments on an absolutely equal level, giving them the same opportunity to express their ideas. Of course every trio is only as good as the cooperation between its members, and this particular trio has very few competitors in that department. Of the six pieces the trio plays, four are originals by Kuhn, one is a Humair / Kuhn collaboration and one was composed by the great French Jazz clarinetist Michel PortalFind albums by this artist. It is fascinating to see how the music, which was recorded eight years apart, appears to be as if recorded during the same concert. Such level of perfect integration and telepathic interplay is only achieved by the very best musicians out there and it´s great that ACTFind albums on this label released these live recordings as they are simply too good to be forgotten.
The Jazz symphony is of course as different form the trio recordings as the Jazz idiom permits; from an intimate trio into a symphonic grandeur. It is no secret that I have been a loyal follower of the works by Michael Gibbs ever since he appeared on the British scene, and in retrospect his orchestral works have been some of my fondest experiences not only as Jazz pieces, but as examples of grand music in general. The concept of this extraordinary work is to take a musical tour of Western Europe, from the northern Scandinavian countries, via central Europe and then south west to Spain. The symphony is divided into thirteen separate fragments, each one featuring different soloists, which are loosely connected to specific European countries but overall present the diversity of the Continent´s Cultural heritage and aesthetic values as expressed by music.
Although these two albums have seemingly almost nothing in common on the surface, they do represent simply a different facets of the same Cultural attitude, based on tradition and grooming as many new ideas as possible, ignoring incompatibilities and obstacles. Gibbs proves again that his exquisite melodies are perfect vehicles for Jazz improvisations, and the superb team gathered to perform this music stands up to the challenge with flying colors.
Overall this is a great tribute to the life and music of Joachim Kuhn, but includes also many other aspects of the music we love so much. Even if one already has a copy of "Europeana", it´s still worth to get a copy of this set just for the trio album, which will probably lead to another listening of the Gibbs work as well. Great stuff!

  | JOACHIM KUHN ~ HIP ELEGY (MOST PERFECT SOUND EDITION) MPS 9808186 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist ranks among the most famous European jazz musicians. Brilliant pianist and composer, he has been active on the German jazz scene since the mid-1960’s, first playing with his older brother Ralf KuhnFind albums by this artist (a superb jazz clarinet player – see their excellent album on the American Impulse!Find albums on this label label, if you can find it) and later enjoyed a spectacular solo career, playing and recording with all the best jazz musicians around the world. As many of his German colleagues he played mostly free jazz in his early days and later expanded also to Jazz-Rock.
For this 1975 recording Kuhn assembled a stellar group of musicians: Japanese trumpeter Terumasa HinoFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist extraordinare Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, Brazilian percussionist Nana VasconcelosFind albums by this artist and an all-American rhythm section with John LeeFind albums by this artist on bass and Alphonse MouzonFind albums by this artist on drums. Together they play a set of Kuhn’s superb compositions, executed with elegance and virtuosity rarely heard elsewhere. Kuhn’s superb piano technique, of the classical concert hall scale, sets the tone, but he also uses electronic keyboards to paint layers of atmospheric backgrounds. Everybody enjoys plenty of space to improvise and the result is a Fusion fan’s dream come-true.
On a side note: the album was produced by Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist and the music was first played at the jubilee concerts celebrating his 5,000th radio jazz program on the Sudwestfunk network – where Berendt worked for many years. Side Note The legendary German MPSFind albums on this label (Musik Produktion Schwarzwald) label, founded by Hans Georg Brunner-SchwerFind albums by this artist (HGBS) in 1963, first as SABAFind albums on this label Records and later on from 1968 as MPS Records, was the most important independent European record label, which had an enormous contribution to the development of European Jazz. For many years MPS cooperated with the legendary German producer / author Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, my Friend and Mentor, whose visionary approach and open-mindedness brought the crème de la crème of the Jazz (in the broadest meaning of the word) musicians from all over the world to the label. Between 1963 and 1983 MPS produced about five hundred albums, many of which are among the most important Jazz recordings on this planet.
In 1983 the MPS catalog was sold to UniversalFind albums on this label, which sadly resulted in all those artistic treasures to almost disappear from the face of the earth – a situation not only tragic but culturally criminal. Universal reissued a part of the MPS albums (probably 128 titles) on CD between 1999 and 2011 under the "Most Perfect Sound Edition" moniker.
Since 2008 the German Promising MusicFind albums on this label label released some of the MPS recordings, but at a very slow pace.
In 2014 the German company Edel AG bought the MPS catalogue from Universal and released a series of 25 MPS albums on CD with a new slipcase graphic design, which brought all those excellent albums back to life. In 2015 Edel AG started to record and release new albums under the MPS moniker. In 2016 Edel AG released a series of 10 classic MPS albums on CD, which were beautifully remastered and re-packaged, presenting the original artwork and liner notes, as well as new liner notes and photographs. An obvious labor of love, these reissues are what the MPS catalogue truly deserves. This project was continued in 2017 with another series of 10 classic MPS albums released on CD. In later years some new reissues were released sporadically.
Over the years many SABA / MPS albums were reissued in Japan, which is often the only available source for these albums today, but that is a story in itself.

  | JOACHIM KUHN ~ I`M NOT DREAMING / DYNAMICS ART OF GROOVE 80232 (Barcode: 885513802323) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1983 - 1990 Released: 2014
This is a reissue of two albums by German pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, which were originally released on the German CMPFind albums on this label label, owned and operated by recording legend / producer Walter QuintusFind albums by this artist. After a spell of activity in the Jazz-Rock Fusion idiom in the 1970s, Kuhn returned to experimentation in the Avant-Garde Jazz and contemporary Classical music in the 1980s, and these two albums reflect his work in that decade.
"I`m Not DreamingFind albums with this title", recorded in 1983, marks the beginning of the association between Kuhn and Quintus and his CMP label. It was recorded by a quintet, which features two Germans: cellist Ottomar BorwitzkyFind albums by this artist (a Classical musician) and multi-instrumentalist Herbert ForschFind albums by this artist, and two Americans: the legendary trombonist George LewisFind albums by this artist and percussionist Mark NauseefFind albums by this artist (resident in Germany). Together they form a formidable ensemble, which performs seven original compositions by Kuhn.
The music is floating somewhere between Free Jazz and contemporary Chamber Classical music, which is based on composed themes but is then expanded by extensive improvised passages. Over thirty years later this music is still as challenging and fresh as it was at the time of the recording, and remains a significant piece of the modern European Jazz history.
"DynamicsFind albums with this title", recorded in 1990, is a solo piano album, which presents seven pieces, five of which were composed by Kuhn and two are interpretations of music composed by Eric DolphyFind albums by this artist and Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist.
Again, rather than playing completely improvised music, Kuhn prefers to have a compositional framework to guide him, as he creates his improvisations. Kuhn is of course one of the most important European Jazz pianist and his solo piano albums are always examples of sublime musicality, impeccable aesthetics and of course brilliant technique. This is demanding, serious music, which demands concentration and dedication in order to be fully appreciated and understood, but eventually it is as much rewarding.
This reissue brings back to life some of the great European Jazz, that sank into the background in time, but which certainly deserves to be cherished and remembered. Therefore the Art Of GrooveFind albums on this label label deserves to be shown gratitude for their work in this area.

  | JOACHIM KUHN ~ MELODIC ORNETTE COLEMAN ACT 9763 (Barcode: 614427976321) ~ GERMANY ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 2018 Released: 2019
This is a solo piano album by German Jazz pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist performing music by the iconic American Jazz figure Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist. The album presents fourteen compositions, all but one by Coleman, and one original by Kuhn, dedicated to Coleman.
On the liner notes of the album Kuhn explains the circumstances as follows: "Between 1995 and 2000 I was able to play sixteen concerts with Ornette. Before each concert he would write ten new pieces that we would work out and record during an entire week at his Harmolodic studio in Harlem, New York. Since he wanted me to contribute the chords (sounds) for his melodies, I was directly in the composition process. Once the concert was over, the songs would never be played again."
Twenty years later Kuhn selected thirteen out of a hundred and seventy pieces that were created in the manner described above, and recorded them for piano solo, adding his own tribute to Coleman as a conclusion. Only one of these songs was released on record earlier, therefore this album presents a significant amount of previously unreleased music by Coleman.
Although Kuhn modestly concealed his part in creating all these compositions (they are all credited to Coleman), his contribution to this music is of course invaluable, as can be experienced by listening to the music herein. It should be noted that Coleman always treated European Jazz musicians with respect and on equal footing, in contrast to many of his American colleagues.
Kuhn´s performances are of course exquisite, as always, and his status as a European Jazz icon remains fully warranted by each and every album he ever recorded, this one included of course. Coleman´s many followers and of course European Jazz lovers should be able to enjoy this album without reservation, not only for its significance in Jazz history but first and foremost for the intrinsic beauty of the music it contains. A wonderful gem!

  | JOACHIM KUHN ~ NIGHTLINE NEW YORK IN-AKUSTIK 869 (Barcode: 4001985008698) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1981 Released: 2000
This is a reissue / remaster of the album by German Jazz pianist / composer / bandleader Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, recorded in NY with an all American team, which included saxophonists Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist and Bob MintzerFind albums by this artist, bassist Eddie GomezFind albums by this artist and drummer Billy HartFind albums by this artist. Percussionist Mark NauseefFind albums by this artist guests on two tracks. The album presents five tracks, all composed by Kuhn.
The music is a brilliant display of modern Jazz, performed by some of the best American Jazz musicians active at the time, and highly charged by the presence of Kuhn, who is taking both the music and the performances on a completely new lever both energetically and aesthetically.
The music is based on solid and beautifully melodic themes, and performed within the standard Jazz framework, but Kuhn’s piano playing is well beyond the ordinary and fills the aural space with incredibly dense arpeggios and sophisticated harmonics. The combined result of the “well behaved” Americans and the “wild” European, who originates from far-out Avant-Garde but proves that he can be seemingly as “tamed” as the best traditionalist, is simply epic.
In many respects this album is a classic example of the colossal difference between American and European Jazz, a dissonance which Kuhn manages to put to work together perfectly. In culinary terms it’s a bit like adding pepper to chocolate, which might have been shocking and unthought-of, when proposed for the first time, but soon found many admirers.
Overall, although being a rather singular episode in Kuhn’s extraordinary recording legacy, and probably one of his most obscure albums, this is a superb piece of music and a highly educational document of the Euro-American Jazz relations. It is, of course, an absolute must to all serious Jazz lovers.

  | JOACHIM KUHN ~ POISON IN+OUT 77071 (Barcode: 798747707169) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 2004 Released: 2005
This is a wonderful album by veteran German pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, recorded in a trio setting with French bassist Jean-Paul CeleaFind albums by this artist and Austrian drummer Wolfgang ReisigerFind albums by this artist. Kuhn plays saxophone on two tracks, which is of course quite a rarity. As usual with Kuhn´s projects, this one has also a concept behind it and is dedicated to songs related to the use of drugs. The album includes eleven pieces, four of which are original compositions by Kuhn and seven are his interpretations of Pop and Rock songs, all associated with the drug culture.
The music is a superb example of modern European Jazz, of which Kuhn is one of its Godfathers. Although the interpretations of the Pop / Rock songs are pretty radical and completely transforming the originals into the Jazz realm, the overall atmosphere of this album is pretty calm and less Avant-Garde centered that his other recordings. An atmosphere of melancholy and reflection seems to be the leading force. As a result this album presents some of the most melodic and introvert Kuhn piano playing in a long time, which is of course as wonderful as always.
The trio work is also excellent all the way, with obvious mutual respect and telepathic communication between the trio members. Celea, who also plays very melodically and lyrically, contributes several short, but excellent solos and Reisiger builds up a complex rhythmic layer, with nevertheless swings beautifully.
Overall this is a classic piece of extraordinary piano trio music, advanced and incredibly complex on one hand and yet beautifully melodic and relaxed on the other. Of course Kuhn´s recorded legacy is full of extraordinary albums, but this one belongs to one of my personal favorites. It is one of those albums which change according to the mood of the listener, and therefore keeps being alive for posterity.
For the many Kuhn fans this is an absolute must have, but people less familiar with his music could find here a splendid opportunity to enter the magic world of Joachim Kuhn, which is a true garden of delights!

The music is a brilliant example of modern European Jazz with a large degree of Freedom and Improvisation, but based on strictly and brilliantly composed themes. The lineup shifts between trio, quartet and quintet settings, and allows wonderful interplay between these exceptional musicians. Kuhn is undoubtedly one of the most unique and innovative European Jazz musicians, and this album, as in fact all of his recordings, clearly show why.
Kuhn dominates the proceedings with his virtuosic piano parts, mostly played at a hyper-fast tempo, but all the musicians get a chance to solo and show their chops, and the excellent rhythm section manages to keep standard time most of the time. For me, Kuhn is one of the greatest and most talented weavers of wonderful melodies, and this album is full of these.
Overall, this is a superb album and sadly one of the lesser known in the extensive recorded legacy by Kuhn, which is absolutely worth being discovered, although it is not easy to be found these days. The hair-raising virtuosity of Kuhn has but a few equals in modern Jazz and he never recorded an album, which is not worthy of an honorable place in a serious modern Jazz record collection.

  | JOACHIM KUHN & JAN AKKERMAN ~ LIVE! IN-AKUSTIK 868 (Barcode: 4001985008681) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1979 Released: 2000
This is a reissue / remaster of a live album by a duo comprising of two legendary European musicians: German Jazz pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and Dutch Rock guitarist / composer Jan AkkermanFind albums by this artist (co-founder of FocusFind albums by this artist). The album presents just two tracks, which are different interpretations of the same composition by Kuhn, recorded several weeks apart during the duo’s 1979 European tour, twelve and twenty-one minutes in duration respectively.
The music is a superb example of Improvised Music, which combines Jazz and Rock improvisation “under one roof”, which was quite popular in Europe the 1970s. Kuhn and Akkerman played together on various occasions earlier on, and the duo concerts were a culmination of their musical cooperation.
The idea to present two versions of the same composition, separated by just a few weeks of playing the tune repeatedly, shows how music develops as a result of being performed and shared intimately, especially so if improvisation is at the focus. The album is also a great document of Rock Improvisation, which is quite different from Jazz-Rock Fusion, and which goes back to the 1960s, especially to British Rock, which included Rock Improvisation (unrelated to Jazz), for example in the concert recordings of groups like CreamFind albums by this artist or ColosseumFind albums by this artist.
Overall, this is a fascinating and relatively little known album by two great musicians, who present inter-genre cooperation at its best. Both are virtuosos of their instruments, which is clearly evident herein, and the “Art of the Duo” idiom suits this beautiful album perfectly. Not easy to find by definitely worth finding a copy!

  | JOACHIM KUHN / ROLF KUHN ~ LOVE STORIES IN+OUT 77061 (Barcode: 798747706124) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 2003 Released: 2003
This is a spectacular duo album by the Kuhn Brothers: pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and clarinetist Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist. As the title suggests they perform ten love songs, nine of which are standards every Jazz fan knows well and one is an original piece co-composed by the brothers.
The presence of the Kuhn Brothers also promises freedom and the music delivers plenty of it of course. Although separated by fifteen years of age and in many respects by musical background, the brothers always managed to find what unites them rather than what separates them, of which this album is a beautiful living proof. Therefore the music herein presents the melodic themes of each of the songs but also ventures into pretty advanced free improvised sections, although never losing the focus for a single second.
The life´s story of the Kuhn Brothers is in many respects the story of modern European Jazz from its early days in the mid 1960s. Rolf, who encountered Jazz in the height of the Swing era, turned out to be a virtuoso player performing with American Jazz stars and yet returned to Europe to continue his career. Joachim started at a very early age experimenting with Free Form and Avant-Garde, swiftly becoming one of the leaders of the new European Jazz, which has broken free of the chains imposed by the rigid American tradition and stayed always at the vanguard of the genre. Nevertheless Joachim never underrated the Jazz tradition and if the opportunity called for it, he could play mainstream Jazz or Jazz-Rock Fusion better them most. The brothers kept close ties over the years and recorded numerous albums together, of which this is one of my all time favorites.
There is a telepathic understanding and interplay between the brothers, which is hardly surprising considering their close ties. Rolf plays the "sane", melodic phrases most of the time, whereas Joachim is all over the place with his wild chord structures and arpeggios and the resulting music is simply stunning. Again the Art Of The Duo idiom proves that two great musicians can sound better than an entire symphonic orchestra
Of course there are also the European Jazz characteristics that this music boasts continuously: elegance, sophistication, intelligence and depth. Although seemingly relaxed and modest at first, this music has so much substance and intensity, that even after numerous repetitive listening sessions it reveals new vistas each and every time.
In addition this music was spectacularly recorded by the great Walter QuintusFind albums by this artist, and the sound quality is simply divine. This is an absolute must to very European Jazz / Art Of The Duo connoisseur!

  | JOACHIM KUHN NEW TRIO ~ BEAUTY & TRUTH ACT 9816 (Barcode: 614427981622) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 2015 Released: 2016

The album presents twelve relatively short pieces, four of which are original compositions by Kuhn, five are Jazz standards (two by Polish Jazz composer Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist, see below), two are Rock standards (by The DoorsFind albums by this artist) and one is a contemporary Pop song (by Stand High PatrolFind albums by this artist).
The trio featuring musicians separated from the leader (born 1944) by a whole generation and more results in a much invigorated approach to the idiom, which seems to present to him no great challenge at all. During his entire career Kuhn had no problem with cross-style / country / age differences, being one of the most diverse and adaptive European musician of all times.
For Jazz piano trio lovers this album is, as expected, an absolute must, since Kuhn´s playing remains one of the most illustrious examples of this High Art, and supported respectfully and amicably by excellent younger, but already highly experienced players, Kuhn is ably to stretch his wings and soar to celestial spheres.
As to the "Polish angle", the fact that Kuhn decided to include two compositions by Komeda is not accidental. While still living in East Germany and before moving to West Germany, Kuhn spent several months in 1964 living in Prague and in 1965 living in Warsaw, where he met the top Polish Jazz musicians active at the time. He was present as the studio session that produced Komeda´s iconic "AstigmaticFind albums with this title" album and met Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist, which resulted in the recording of the legendary "Live At Kosmos, BerlinFind albums with this title" album. Kuhn took part in Warsaw´s Jazz Jamboree Festivals in 1964 and 1965.

Musically this album is an obvious follow up to the debut, continuing the formula of mixing original compositions with up-to-date arrangements of older pieces, concentrating on the more settled, lyrical facet of Jazz without compromising the inquisitive nature of Kuhn´s playing and his approach to improvisation.
The trio, featuring musicians separated from the leader by a whole generation and more, results in a much invigorated circumstances as far as Kuhn is concerned, which seems to present to him no great challenge at all. As the title suggests, the album is dedicated to the music of the Godfather of Polish modern Jazz, pianist / composer Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist. The album was recorded live at the Berlin Philharmonic, and presents nine tracks, eight of which are Komeda’s compositions and one is a composition by Joachim Kuhn, dedicated to the memory of his older brother (and my Dear Friend) clarinetist / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, who sadly departed almost exactly a year ago.
The seeds of this album were planted almost sixty years ago: in December of 1965, the twenty-one years old Joachim Kuhn was invited to take part in the most important East European Jazz festival at the time, the annual Jazz Jamboree in Warsaw, where he performed with his trio. Kuhn, who still lived in East Germany (DDR or GDR) at the time, was considered a prodigy and a rebellious pioneer, playing Free Jazz / Improvised Music, which for some strange combination of political circumstances, was allowed at the epicenter of Eastern Block’s stern Cultural censorship and oppression, similar in many ways to what happened at the time in the neighboring Socialist States, as far as Jazz Music was concerned. In Warsaw, Kuhn met many Polish Jazz musicians, most importantly Krzysztof Komeda, who also performed at the festival with his quintet. Komeda invited Kuhn to attend the recording session for his epic debut album “AstigmaticFind albums with this title”, which was held a couple of days after the quintet’s appearance and recorded at the same Philharmonic Hall. As a result, Kuhn was among the first people to hear the album and even to discuss the music with Komeda shortly after it was recorded. Less than a year later Kuhn would join his older brother in West Germany and later move to Paris and Komeda would leave for Hollywood, where his cinematic career promised to explode, only to be dead, following a tragic accident, by April 1969. Their musical paths never crossed again but, as said earlier, the seeds of this album were planted.
The link to the Atom String Quartet, Poland’s most versatile, inventive, prestigious and unique string quartet, is also obvious, following the duo album recorded by Joachim Kuhn and Mateusz Smoczynski in 2019, called “Speaking SoundFind albums with this title”, which evidently planted another seed.
I have repeatedly criticized the almost brutal, often opportunistic misuse of Komeda’s music and memory by numerous musicians over the years, which not only did not pay tribute to Komeda’s Genius and revolutionary contribution to European Jazz, but in some cases tarnished it completely. Therefore, it gives me deep pleasure to say that this album beautifully fills all the requirements to serve as an appropriate tribute to Komeda and his legacy.
The carefully selected material depicts both the revolutionary aspects of Komeda’s Avant-Garde approach to Jazz, but also reflects his wonderful lyricism and deep Polish melancholy, which are the base of most of Komeda’s cinematic music. The album offers the entire content of “Astigmatic” (three compositions) and the "Roman II" piece as examples, which reflect the former as well as the beautiful ballads from the soundtracks of Roman PolanskiFind albums by this artist’s movies like “Rosemary’s Baby” or “Knife in the Water”, which reflect the latter.
The idea of using a string quartet as part of the arrangements of Komeda’s music seemed extremely risky at first, especially being exposed in the past to some horrific attempts in that direction, but upon hearing the result my instinctive reservations melted without a trace. Obviously adding individual string instrument soloing is much more straightforward, but Kuhn’s arrangements skillfully utilize the entire quartet to enhance the dramatic effects of the music. Nevertheless, it takes the extraordinary skills of all four “Atoms” to achieve such a level of fusion, like what can be witnessed herein, which emphasizes their unique capabilities.
It seems that Kuhn manages to sound more like Komeda would have liked to sound himself. Komeda’s virtues as a composer and visionary overshadow his role as a piano player and he lacked perhaps the virtuosity and spark as a pianist, which Kuhn certainly has plenty of. As a result, Komeda’s music on this album sounds in many respects more invigorated than ever before, perhaps even elevated to another level by sheer concentration of musical talent and sincerity, which dominates this album. Since I have had the pleasure of hearing every album Kuhn ever recorded, I must say that this album is not only one of his best ever, but also one of his most wholehearted ones. It certainly is a kind of a life circle closure for Kuhn, although I do wish him many more years of successful career and happy life.
Overall, this is a monumental recording for the true Jazz enthusiasts and lovers of the genre. Polish Jazz fans will find here an exquisite reminder of their beloved and legendary pioneer, German Jazz fans will discover a little known chapter in Kuhn’s life, which left a significant mark on his future career, European Jazz lovers will find here everything European Jazz stands for: versatility, innovation, pursuit of excellence and aesthetics and true love of all forms of music, and finally for all Jazz lovers, a beacon of true talent, which is eternal and omnipresent. This is an absolutely essential piece of music in every serious music collection!

This is another wonderful duo album by German pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist this time which brilliant young Polish violinist Mateusz SmoczynskiFind albums by this artist. The album was released as part of the "Duo Art" series by the German ACTFind albums on this label label, which cultivates the "Art of the Duo" Jazz tradition. The album presents nine pieces, five of which were composed by Kuhn, one co-composed by him and Smoczynski, one is an adaptation of Classical composition by George GurdjieffFind albums by this artist, one by French accordionist / composer Vincent PeiraniFind albums by this artist and finally one by Rabih Abou-KhalilFind albums by this artist.
The music makes it immediately apparent that although obviously improvised, it is first and foremost chamber in character and heavily laden with Classical Music influences. The emerging Jazz-Classical Fusion is one of the finest examples of the idiom, completely unique and aesthetically innovative. Although followers of Smoczynski´s career will not be surprised by this deep relationship with Classical Music, for Kuhn´s followers this is indeed a great surprise, as his ties with Avant-Garde / Improvised Music are way more "natural" that those with Classical Music exposed on this album. Surprisingly Kuhn´s chameleonic ability to fit in every situation works here as well and one might be easily fooled into thinking that he is a veteran Classical pianist, which by the way is exactly what his career was supposed to be in his early days before he discovered Jazz.
The age difference between Kuhn (born 1944) and Smoczynski (born 1984) is similarly completely insignificant as well, and both players perform in perfect musical and spiritual unity, as expected from such distinguished Artists. They both toy lovingly with the compositions, taking them often quite far-off from their origins at times and staying close to the notes on other occasions. Kuhn sprinkles the proceedings with brilliant but brief Free Jazz arpeggios, and Smoczynski inserts some Polish Folklore fragments, which makes the music a great fun to listen to.
But as usual in the intimate duo setting, the music is first and foremost about the dialogue these two Artists are able to create while performing. As someone who happens to know them both in person, the magic that does take place here is completely natural, as they are both as sweet and loving as they sound. The wonderful photograph included on the album´s artwork says it all – Mateusz is looking with obvious respect and admiration at the Master and Joachim smiles kindly in return, like a grandfather proud of his grandchild.
As I have stated so many times, the duo is the ideal musical unit; it is the minimal environment which produces interplay and telepathic communication between the musicians, which is the essence of collective performance. On the other hands it is free of the limitations imposed by performing in a larger environment, which a priori limit the level of the intimacy. This album is such a beautiful expression of the power of a duo that I can hardly think of a better one.
I have been lucky to follow closely the career of Mateusz Smoczynski since his early steps on the musical scene and feel a great pride in his success. Obviously seeing Joachim Kuhn, who has been a part of the Soundtrack Of My Life since forever, being active and productive today is a no lesser joy. Bless you both for this sublime music!

  | JOACHIM KUHN TRIO ~ KALIMBA ACT 9456 (Barcode: 614427945624) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz-World Fusion Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007
This is the debut album by German pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and his trio with Moroccan vocalist and oud / Guembri Master Majid BekkasFind albums by this artist and Spanish drummer Ramon LopezFind albums by this artist. Kuhn and Bekkas met three years prior to the recording of this album and their immediate friendship proved to be lasting, producing this and several follow up albums. The album presents ten original compositions: four by Kuhn, three by Bekkas and three co-composed.
Combining seemingly unbridgeable Cultural origins, from Avant-Garde European Jazz, via African desert music, Middle Eastern, Flamenco and Indian rhythms and back to Improvised Music, the music made by the trio manages to ignore these imaginary chasms, proving that music is One.
The mystique of the human brain and the infinite associations it is able to create, often completely spontaneously, never ceases to amaze. Creating a perfect aesthetic harmony of the musical / Cultural elements collected on this album is a miracle; no less dramatic statement could describe this phenomenon. And yet the music works beautifully, not only on the emotional level, but also on the cerebral / analytical plain, which is absolutely amazing.
It is fascinating to hear how deeply the idea of improvisation is embedded in West African and Middle Eastern music, despite the differences of the localized approaches. The actual concept of improvising, sometimes for a seemingly endless period of time, on a basic melodic theme, is completely natural in the region, as it is natural in Jazz.
As someone who is surrounded with Middle Eastern Culture at home this music sound perfectly homey to me, but surely it can and in fact does work as well for true music lovers around the world.
As all recordings by Kuhn, this is an absolute must to all serious lovers of European Jazz, Avant-Garde, Jazz-World Fusion and sublime music in all its forms. Wholeheartedly recommended!

This is the second album by German pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and his trio with Moroccan vocalist and oud / Guembri Master Majid BekkasFind albums by this artist and Spanish drummer Ramon LopezFind albums by this artist, this time recorded in Rabat, Morocco and featuring guest Gnawa and Benin musicians. The album presents six original compositions, three each by Kuhn and Bekkas, but the music is largely spontaneously improvised.
The music is a brilliant example of cross-Culture / cross-genre pollination, creating Jazz-World Fusion at its best. Kuhn´s openness to a wide range of musical influences during his long and fruitful career, which explored diverse musical genres combined with his Avant-Garde approach, as well as his prolific recorded legacy, is a glorious portrayal of the European Jazz idiom. His fascination with African / Middle Eastern music is not surprising and his affinity and ability to channel his musical ideas into that specific direction is an absolute marvel.
It is highly recommended to compare this album to the "Out Of The Desert LiveFind albums with this title" album recorded a couple of years later, which combines the trio with the hr-BigbandFind albums by this artist, which will emphasize both the differences and the similarities between this unique project and its expansion into the Jazz idiom, which can be truly educational. Of course all other recordings by this trio are equally fascinating.
As all recordings by Kuhn, this is an absolute must to all serious lovers of European Jazz, Avant-Garde, Jazz-World Fusion and sublime music in all its forms. Wholeheartedly recommended!

This is the fifth album by German pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and his trio with Moroccan vocalist and oud / Guembri Master Majid BekkasFind albums by this artist and Spanish drummer Ramon LopezFind albums by this artist, this time recorded with invited guests: legendary American saxophonist Archie SheppFind albums by this artist and World Music musicians from Morocco including percussionist Kouassi Bessan JosephFind albums by this artist. The album presents six pieces, three of which are original compositions by Kuhn, one by Joseph, one co-composed by Joseph and Kuhn and finally the "Kulu Se Mama" by Juno LewisFind albums by this artist, made immortal by John ColtraneFind albums by this artist.
The music is a brilliant example of Jazz-World Fusion at its best. Kuhn´s openness to a wide range of musical influences during his long and fruitful career, which explored diverse musical genres combined with his Avant-Garde approach and the prolific recorded legacy is a glorious portrayal of the European Jazz idiom. His fascination with African / Middle Eastern music is not surprising and his affinity and ability to channel his musical ideas into that specific direction is an absolute marvel.
The music is a direct and logical continuation of the stylistic platform the trio managed to create, combining European Avant-Garde Jazz with African and Middle Eastern musical tradition. The presence of Shepp, who plays on three tracks only, strengthens the Jazz element slightly as compared to the earlier recordings by the trio, but has little overall effect on the character of the music. Nevertheless his contributions are perfectly suited to the music and show him to be in full strength despite his advanced age.
Of course, as all recordings by Kuhn, this is an absolute must to all serious lovers of European Jazz, Avant-Garde, Jazz-World Fusion and sublime music in all its forms, and as always is wholeheartedly recommended!

Kuhn and his cohorts play superbly, as expected, and the Big Band arrangements manage to add a new dimension and incredible power to the music, creating one of the most colorful and profound statements of this kind.
It is highly recommended to compare this album to the other recordings by this trio, which will emphasize both the differences and the similarities between this unique project and the source it originates from, which can be truly educational. The fascination with the African dessert music is of course share by many European musicians since the 1960s, including Rock stars like Brian JonesFind albums by this artist.
Of course, as all recordings by Kuhn, this is an absolute must to all serious lovers of European Jazz, Avant-Garde, Jazz-World Fusion and sublime music in all its forms. Go get it as every day of your life before you heard this album was missing something…

  | JOACHIM KUHN / MICHAEL WOLLNY ~ LIVE AT SCHLOSS ELMAU ACT 9758 (Barcode: 614427975829) ~ GERMANY ~ Free Jazz / Improvised Music Recorded: 2008 Released: 2009
This is an album by German Jazz piano duo comprising of Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist (born 1944) and Michael WollnyFind albums by this artist (born 1978). The album presents six tracks, two each composed by Kuhn and Wollny, one co-composed by them and one an interpretation of a Classical composition. Four tracks are piano duos and one each is a piano solo by Kuhn or Wollny.
Despite the generation gap and stylistic differences between these two musicians, they manage to communicate and cooperate remarkably well, creating a series of Improvised Music vistas, which are as cross-genre as humanly possible. Although based on pre-composed motifs, the music is totally a spur of the moment creation, and yet manages to sound completely coherent and even melodic to some extent. This is a somewhat extreme example of the “Art of the Duo”, waiting to be appreciated.
For listeners familiar with Kuhn’s long and illustrious career, such open-mindedness and virtuosic piano playing is nothing new, but at the time this album was recorded Wollny’s career was just taking off and sharing the stage with a legendary figure like Kuhn must have been challenging. Without a doubt he stood up to the challenge without a hitch. For me the highlight of the album is Kuhn’s solo interpretation of Johann Sebastian BachFind albums by this artist’s “Chaconne”, which lasts for over thirteen minutes – an absolute treasure!
Overall, this is a very interesting musical meeting, and for piano lovers especially a truly delightful exploration. Although the music is almost completely improvised, it magically makes perfect sense. For more experienced listeners the comparison between the two Artists is especially fascinating. Perhaps not suitable for a wide range of listeners, but those who are up to a challenge, a true delight!

  | ROLF KUHN ~ INSIDE OUT INTUITION 750447327627 (Barcode: 750447327627) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1999 Released: 1999
This is an exquisite album by German clarinetist / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, one of my all time favorite musicians, recorded in several different lineups and including American guest stars: saxophonists Michael BreckerFind albums by this artist and Lee KonitzFind albums by this artist and also Rolf´s younger brother pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist. The rest of the musicians are members of the younger generation of the German Jazz scene. Together they perform nine tunes, four of which are originals by Rolf Kuhn, three are by Joachim Kuhn, one is by Konitz and the remaining one is a Duke EllingtonFind albums by this artist standard. The album was recorded by the legendary sound engineer / producer Walter QuintusFind albums by this artist, owner of CMPFind albums on this label Records, and the sound quality is simply breathtaking.
Kuhn´s clarinet sound, which has been his trademark for decades, is absolutely unique, combining the traditional Jazz approach originating in the early Jazz days and European modernism. Kuhn, who often joins forces with his pianist brother, produced a substantial and consistently excellent body of recorded work over time, which in retrospect is an integral part of the European Jazz and one of its finest facets.
This album is full of beautiful melodies, mostly reflecting the European lyricism and melancholy, superbly executed by all the participants, with many splendid solos and outstanding ensemble playing. The younger musicians seem to have no problem whatsoever to stand shoulder to shoulder with the veterans. Considering the fact that Kuhn was seventy years old when this music was recorded, he manages miraculously to keep his head and soul eternally young!
This album is a classic example of the elegance, sophistication, panache and stylish flair, which characterize European Jazz at its best, and which manage to present relatively mainstream Jazz in a fresh and challenging way. I can´t imagine any true Jazz fan not enjoying this fantastic music, and therefore recommend it wholeheartedly. For clarinet lovers this album is simply beyond essential!

This is a fine album by German clarinetist / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, one of my all time favorite musicians, recorded with members of the younger generation of the German Jazz scene: organist Frank ChastenierFind albums by this artist, bassist Detlev BeierFind albums by this artist and drummer Wolfgang HaffnerFind albums by this artist and several guest stars: American saxophonist Bob MintzerFind albums by this artist, Swedish pianist Claes CronaFind albums by this artist, French pianist Martial SolalFind albums by this artist, American guitarist Chuck LoebFind albums by this artist and drummer Peter ErskineFind albums by this artist. Together they perform ten tunes, five of which are originals by Rolf Kuhn, three are by Mintzer and the remaining two are standards. The album was partly recorded by the legendary sound engineer / producer Walter Quintus and the sound quality is of course excellent.
The music on this album is mostly mainstream Jazz, which pays tribute to the American Jazz tradition, with elegant and sophisticated touches of European Jazz. When Mintzer plays up front, everything sounds American and when Kuhn plays up front everything sounds European, which is hardly surprising. Same can be said about Crona and Solal, who come from two very different Jazz environments. The two tracks that feature Loeb are Fusion oriented. In short this album embraces both the traditional approach and the modern one, treating them both with respect and as a result presents Kuhn as a versatile, relevant figure despite his advanced age.
Kuhn´s clarinet sound, which has been his trademark for decades, is absolutely unique, combining the traditional Jazz approach originating in the early Jazz days and European modernism. This is one of the most accessible and straightforward albums that Kuhn recorded during his extended career and as such is highly recommended to listeners who are not familiar with his work, perhaps serving as an introduction to the Rolf Kuhn universe, which is vast and versatile. Definitely worth exploring!

  | ROLF KUHN ~ ROLLERCOASTER JAZZWERKSTATT 039 (Barcode: 4250079758012) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 2008 Released: 2008
This is the debut album by veteran German clarinetist / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist (born 1929) recorded with his sensational new (at the time) quartet, which features also the veteran bassist Johannes FinkFind albums by this artist and two excellent representatives of the young German Jazz scene, guitarist Ronny GraupeFind albums by this artist and drummer Christian LillingerFind albums by this artist. The album presents nine pieces, eight of which are original compositions: six by Kuhn, one by Graupe and one by Kuhn´s younger brother Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist. The remaining piece is a composition by Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist.
The creation of this quartet and the recording of this album mark a remarkable rejuvenation in Kuhn´s extraordinary career. Since his return to Germany in 1962 from his US stint, Kuhn has been on the forefront of European Jazz, taking part in the stylistic development of the genre from Swing to Free Jazz and Improvised Music. It was only natural that Kuhn, whose mindset was always completely separate from his biological age, would decide to play with the new generation of the flourishing German Jazz scene, and of course the decision paid off in full as this album explicitly emphasizes.
The combination between Kuhn´s wonderful clarinet sound, which is still rooted in the Swing tradition, and the modern sound of the younger musicians, creates a beautiful amalgam, which is by far more powerful than the simple sum of its parts. This music still swings beautifully, but also has a lot of space and openness, which allows the musicians to stretch beyond the restrictions of straightforward Jazz and contribute some remarkable musical inventiveness.
As usual, Kuhn´s superb compositions, which are the core of the music, provide ideal vehicles for the quartet to display its qualities in full, both as an ensemble and as individual players. The music is completely absorbing and uplifting on one hand, but also elegant and sophisticated on the other, which of course is everything one might hope for and what makes it so extraordinary.
This album is a must have for all European Jazz enthusiasts, clarinet lovers and connoisseurs of great music. It is recommended to check out the second album entitled "Close UpFind albums with this title" and the brilliant 2015 release "StereoFind albums with this title", both recorded with the same quartet. Hats off!

  | ROLF KUHN ~ SOLARIUS EDEL CONTENT 4029759080473 (Barcode: 4029759080473) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1964 Released: 2012
This is a reissue (first time on CD) of the seminal album by legendary German clarinetist / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist (born 1929), recorded with a quintet, which also included his younger brother pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist (born 1944) and bassist Klaus KochFind albums by this artist and two Polish Jazz legends: saxophonist Michal UrbaniakFind albums by this artist and drummer Czeslaw BartkowskiFind albums by this artist. The album presents six pieces: three original compositions by Rolf Kuhn, two original compositions by Joachim Kuhn and one arrangement of a folk tune.
Over the years this album achieved a legendary status and became a highly sought after collector´s item, because of its political implications, as well as being one of the earliest East European Jazz recordings and an important cornerstone of European Jazz in general. The album was recorded three years after the Berlin Wall, which divided the city until 1989, was constructed and served during that period not only as a symbol of division of Germany into two separate States living in a constant state of political tension, but in fact also as a symbol of the imaginary Iron Curtain, which divided the European Continent into two opposing political camps, engaged in the Cold War, which periodically threatened to become "hot".
Rolf Kuhn left East Germany (or DDR as it was called at the time) in 1950, shortly after Germany was split into two separate states, and moved to West Germany. For several years he lived and performed in the USA, establishing his position as one of the top clarinet players in the world. Upon his return to West Germany he continued his prolific career. Meanwhile his younger brother Joachim Kuhn lived in DDR and led his own trio, which was a pioneering Free Jazz outfit at the time.
The fact that the meeting of the Kuhn brothers captured on this album happened is one of those "against all odds" situations that often happened in East Europe. This was by all means a meeting of the Giants of East European modern Jazz, with Urbaniak arriving from the legendary Krzysztof KomedaFind albums by this artist quintet, Bartkowski from the no less legendary Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist quartet, Koch who played in the Joachim Kuhn trio and finally the two brothers, who despite the age difference are true musical twins.
Together the quintet plays some of the best modern European Jazz ever captured on record, with great melodies expanded into lengthy solos played perfectly by all the musicians involved. Listeners familiar with the Polish Jazz scene will find this music quite similar to the Komeda and Namyslowski albums receded around that time, which present the same formula and even sound very similar to this album. Rolf Kuhn plays some of the best Jazz clarinet ever and no true Jazz connoisseur can honestly afford not to have this album in his collection.
The rapport and incredible telepathic communication between these musicians, as well as the incredibly tight musical environment that pushed the players to their limits resulted in one of the all time best Jazz albums recorded in East Europe, which lost absolutely nothing of its beauty and incredible power in the five decades that passed since.
They don´t make music like that any more, which means this is an absolute must and an essential piece of music history!
Side Note: As all the East European countries under the Socialist regime, East Germany, or DDR as it was known at the time, had only one state owned and controlled Music Company, which released most of its productions on the AmigaFind albums on this label label. Among the many Amiga releases the legendary "orange J" series was dedicated to Jazz recordings, many of which were licenses from the West, but others were original productions, mostly of Jazz made in DDR. Some of these releases, like the one described above, were absolute gems.
Following the unification of Germany, the Amiga albums disappeared from the face of the earth and only in 2012 a German label reissued 15 Amiga Jazz albums on CD. They are all worth checking out!

  | ROLF KUHN ~ SPOTLIGHTS MPS 4029759114260 (Barcode: 4029759114260) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016
This is a phenomenal album by veteran German clarinetist / composer Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, one of my all time favorite musicians. It presents thirteen duos, trios and quartet pieces recorded with a group of wonderful musicians: oboist Albrecht MayerFind albums by this artist, Croatian cellist Asja ValcicFind albums by this artist, drummer Christian LillingerFind albums by this artist, Brazilian vocalist Ed MottaFind albums by this artist and Brazilian bandolinist Hamilton de HolandaFind albums by this artist, Rolf´s brother pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, bassist Oliver PotratzFind albums by this artist and percussionist Volker GreveFind albums by this artist. Kuhn composed nine of the pieces on this album, de Holanda composed one piece and three are standards. The last (bonus) piece on the album features Rolf´s debut recording as a piano player, which means that it´s never too late for debuts.
The music presents a wide scope of genres, including Jazz of course, but also contemporary Classical and World music. The focus is of course on the intimate conversations Kuhn gets involved in with his guests, which are in fact more important than the actual music which is being played. Fresh and unusual duets between clarinet and oboe / cello / bandolim / piano / voice are a tremendous breath of fresh air, and when delivered by a Master of the class of Kuhn, they become simply divine. After decades of playing music Kuhn still finds the spark of genius to make his music stand out and be innovate, explore uncharted territory and dare. Kuhn defeats the chronology and glides elegantly from one genre to another, playfully exchanging phrases with his partners, like a young musician who just discovered the depth and beauty of music.
For the connoisseurs familiar with Kuhn´s music, this album will be definitely a revelation. It is completely different form anything he recorded earlier, including the duet albums he recorded with his brother Joachim Kuhn. It is obvious Kuhn had a lot of fun and joy recording this music, as the atmosphere is incredibly relaxed and warm, which of course immediately reflects on the music.
Overall this is one of the nicest albums recorded in 2016 that landed on my desk and listening to it was an immense pleasure, which I am sure all listeners will share with me. Considering the fact that 2016 was a truly vicious year, which took from us an unthinkable number of great musicians, one should be even happier to enjoy the music of those who are still with us.
Thank you Rolf for all those years of great music you shared with us and I pray to be able to listen to many new records you will record in the years to come.

  | ROLF KUHN GROUP ~ TOTAL SPACE MPS 602527224794 (Barcode: 602527224794) ~ GERMANY ~ Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1975 Released: 2009
This is a reissue / remaster of an album by the German clarinetists / composer / bandleader Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, recorded with an octet, which includes some of the best European Jazz musicians active at the time, like his younger brother pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Gerd DudekFind albums by this artist, trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, Danish bassist Bo StiefFind albums by this artist, Swiss drummer Daniel HumairFind albums by this artist and Danish drummer Kasper WindingFind albums by this artist. The album presents five tracks, four composed by Rolf Kuhn and one by Mangelsdorff.
The album is an outstanding example of European Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock Fusion and with the powerful sound created by the octet with the double drums and the brass instruments overdubbed to create what Rolf Kuhn describes as a “Brass Band”, the entire album offers an orchestral effect, full of blood-chilling and absolutely unique results, in many ways probably exposing the very peak of the Fusion creativity, which are amongst the most interesting ever recorded. This album is in fact a close companion to the other Rolf Kuhn orchestral Fusion album “Symphonic SwampfireFind albums with this title”.
The music is based on strong melodic themes, wonderfully arranged for the orchestral environment, multilayered and even multi-rhythmic, emphasizing the complex sound of the orchestra as a complete music-making unit, rather than mostly just accompanying the soloists. By the time this music was recorded, European Jazz was heavily involved with Fusion, which is superbly incorporated within the orchestral sound, with electric guitar and keyboards being an integral part of the ambience. For guitar lovers, this is one of the finest albums featuring the brilliant guitar artistry of Catherine, as well as the electric side of Joachim Kuhn.
Rolf Kuhn emerges here as a brilliant composer and arranger of orchestral Jazz, as well as a musician able to develop in time and embrace new trends and expand his horizons constantly, which characterized him for his entire lifetime, which I was lucky to follow for many years during our friendship.
Overall, this is one of the most interesting orchestral Jazz albums in European Jazz, despite the fact that it is only known by relatively very few Jazz listeners. I have owned a copy since day one and listened to this album countless times in the almost fifty years since it was released, and each and every time I managed to discover something new in the music. I can only hope some more listeners will discover it one day, although admittedly it is quite difficult to find a copy.

  | ROLF KUHN / JOACHIM KUHN ~ RE-UNION IN BERLIN B.FREE 6271 ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1965 Released: 2016
This is a reissue of a legendary album by brothers: clarinetist Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist and pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist recorded in a quartet setting with bassist Klaus KochFind albums by this artist and drummer Reinhard SchwartzFind albums by this artist originally released in 1965 by CBSFind albums on this label in West Germany. Joachim Kuhn, Koch and Schwartz formed the Joachim Kuhn TrioFind albums by this artist, the first modern / Free Jazz group in East Germany. Rolf, the older brother, who lived at the time in West Germany, joins the trio to form a sensational quartet, recording this, one of the pivotal modern German / European Jazz albums. The album presents five original compositions, three composed by Joachim and two by Rolf, recorded at the renowned Amiga Studios in East Berlin.
The music is a fascinating mixture of tradition and modernism, with Rolf exploring completely novel approach to the clarinet and Joachim developing his advanced harmonic structures, which were about to turn him into one of the greatest pioneers of European Jazz. This album and the "SolariusFind albums with this title" album recorded a year earlier and released on the AmigaFind albums on this label label constitute the early iconic recordings by the Kuhn BrothersFind albums by this artist, which to this very day sound absolutely stunning and lost nothing of their power of expression and historic significance.
As usual in such circumstances, it is truly amazing that this music, which signifies the freedom of expression and intellectual liberty, was recorded at the heart of the most oppressive regime behind the Iron Curtain, similar to the numerous other Free Jazz recordings released by the East German Amiga label. This phenomenon deserves a serious historical study, which strangely has not been tried so far.
For connoisseurs of early European Free Jazz and listeners interested in the development of Jazz in Europe, this album is an absolute must have. But of course the album offers sublime music, which any serious Jazz fan anywhere on this planet should be able to enjoy and appreciate, regardless of its historic significance. A true gem!

The quartet includes also American bassist Jimmy GarrisonFind albums by this artist and Italian drummer Aldo RomanoFind albums by this artist. The album presents two tracks, corresponding to the two sides of the original LP, which are in fact four parts of a suite, which gave the album its name. All the music was co-composed by the both brothers.
Following the unification of the Kuhn Brothers in West Germany, with Joachim leaving the DDR and moving to West Germany, they were invited to perform at the legendary Newport Jazz Festival. Their performance was witnessed by the legendary producer Bob ThieleFind albums by this artist, who invited them to record this album on his iconic Impulse!Find albums on this label label. The album was recorded on July 27, 1967, just a few days following the death and funeral of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, which the brothers attended, and which had a tremendous impact on the music on this album, considering the fact that Coltrane was the most revered American musician and an instigator of Free Jazz / Improvised Music, as well as the fact that Coltrane’s bassist played on it. This album was the first Impulse! release to feature German Jazz Musicians. The Kuhn Brothers recorded another album for Impulse! some forty-four years later, called “LifelineFind albums with this title”.
The album is an outstanding example of early European Free Jazz / Improvised Music, of the absolutely highest standard and imagination, which took the seeds of American Free Jazz of the period and took them to another plane, way more sophisticated, Artistic and imaginative. The performances are blood-chilling and absolutely unique, in many ways probably exposing the very peak of the Jazz creativity, which to be honest never managed to climb much higher than what can be heard here.
Rolf Kuhn is for me the true hero of this session, considering the fact that he was deeply rooted in American Swing and Mainstream, playing in the US for many years, and yet managed to detach himself from that tradition in such a radical way, which is way more difficult than plunging into Improvising Music straight on, like his younger brother. Obviously, the comparison of his clarinet performances herein with Coltrane’s saxophone playing is immediately a point of interest, as are the piano parts against those of Coltrane’s pianists. Rolf’s death almost two years ago (2022) was a huge personal loss for me, since we have been Friends for so many years and I truly admired his talent and wisdom.
Overall, this is one of the most pivotal Jazz albums in European Jazz, despite the fact that it is only known by relatively very few Jazz listeners. I have owned a copy since day one and listened to this album countless times in the almost sixty years since it was released, and each and every time I managed to discover something new in the music. I can only hope some more listeners will discover it one day, although admittedly it is quite difficult to find a copy.

The album was conceived and produced by my Friend and Mentor Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, and was the first recording by the Kuhn Brothers following their unification in West Germany, but their third album overall, following the no less legendary “SolariusFind albums with this title” album recorded in 1964 and released in DDR on the AmigaFind albums on this label label and the “Re-Union In BerlinFind albums with this title” album recorded in 1965 and released in West Germany on the CBSFind albums on this label label. The album presents four tracks, three composed by Joachim Kuhn, and one co-composed by both brothers.
Although Joachim Kuhn is the focal figure of this album, and the music itself, Rolf Kuhn is for me the true hero of this session, considering the fact that he is deeply rooted in American Swing and Mainstream, playing in the US for many years, and yet manged to detach himself from that tradition in such a radical way, which is way more difficult than plunging into Improvising Music straight on, like his younger brother.
| ROLF KUHN ORCHESTRA ~ SYMPHONIC SWAMPFIRE MPS 602527221205 (Barcode: 602527221205) ~ GERMANY ~ Big Band Jazz Recorded: 1978 Released: 2009
This is a reissue / remaster of an album by the German clarinetists / composer / bandleader Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, recorded with a large orchestra and soloists, which include some of the best European Jazz musicians active at the time, like his younger brother pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, American (resident in Germany) saxophonist Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, Danish bassist Niels-Henning Orsted PedersenFind albums by this artist, Belgian drummer Bruno CastellucciFind albums by this artist and others. The album presents five tracks, two of which are parts of a suite, which gave the album its title, all composed by Rolf Kuhn.
The album is an outstanding example of European Orchestral / Big Band Jazz, which took the seeds of American Big Band tradition and transposed it to entirely another plane, way more sophisticated, Artistic and imaginative. The performances are blood-chilling and absolutely unique, in many ways probably exposing the very peak of the Jazz creativity, which to be honest never managed to climb much higher than what can be heard here.
| ROLF KUHN TRIO ~ AS TIME GOES BY BLUE FLAME 40292 (Barcode: 4002587402921) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1989 Released: 1991
This is an album by legendary German Jazz clarinetist / composer / bandleader Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, recorded in the intimate trio setting with his younger brother, pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and bassist Detlev BeierFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tracks, two of which are original compositions by Rolf Kuhn, another two by Joachim Kuhn, one is co-composed by them and two are standards. The album was brilliantly recorded by Walter QuintusFind albums by this artist, at the legendary CMPFind albums on this label studio.
The music is an ideal amalgam of composed and improvised music, based on composed themes and then expanded by lengthy improvisations by all three musicians. It offers a relatively rare opportunity to hear the clarinet in the modern / Free Jazz environment, as well as get exposed to the brilliant work by Beier, who is definitely one of the finest German bass virtuosos, which is plainly evident herein.
All three musicians have plenty of opportunity to expose their masterly skills and the telepathic rapport between them is absolutely stunning. Rolf’s sweet tone and heart-melting melodicism are perfectly matched by his improvisational skills and the intrinsic freedom, which are unmatched. I feel lucky to have been able to experience so many hours of his brilliant performances in person over the years and listening to this album vividly brings back memories of his presence, which I often miss.
Joachim is, of course, as brilliant as always and his arpeggios and uncontainable fluidity fill the space behind his brother’s melodic statements, while Beier supplies, mind you all by himself, all the rhythmic support needed and more.
Overall, this is one of the most beloved albums by Ralf Kuhn in my collection (and I have all of them of course). Brilliantly melodic, and Free spirited at the same time, this is Jazz as its most naked, striking form, which is completely timeless and everlasting. Miss you, my Friend!

  | ALPHONSE MOUZON ~ IN SEARCH OF A DREAM MPS 4029759119661 (Barcode: 4029759119661) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1977 Released: 2017
This is a reissue of the second album for the MPSFind albums on this label label by American drummer / composer / bandleader Alphonse MouzonFind albums by this artist, recorded with a dream team of Fusion musicians: American saxophonist Bob MalikFind albums by this artist and pianist Stu GoldbergFind albums by this artist, Belgian guitarist Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, German keyboards marvel Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and Czech bassist Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist. Together, but in varying lineups, they perform nine tunes, six of which were composed by Mouzon and one each by Catherine, Kuhn and Vitous.
The music is a superbly crafted Jazz-Rock Fusion, with great melodic lines and intelligent arrangements, which focus on the music rather than on senseless doodling which overtook the genre soon after this music was recorded. In fact this is probably one of the latest great Fusion albums, closing the initial decade when the idiom crystallized and achieved its greatest triumphs.
The level of the individual performances is absolutely stellar as each of these instrumentalists was a major figure in the Fusion field at the time. Yet the album is completely devoid of ego trips and competition, with respect and ensemble effort at the helm. Mouzon´s unique and unparalleled drumming is of course the power driving this music at all times, and which remains a source of inspiration for all drummers in the world to this day. Catherine´s guitar playing is also stellar and his sophistication remains unmatched. Kuhn and his keyboard wizardry is the cherry on top.
With passing of time, this album becomes ever stronger and valid, as a milestone of what Fusion was (and should be) all about. Mouzon´s contribution to Fusion is of course immeasurable and this album is just one of the pieces of the puzzle that define the genre. Obviously this is an absolute must in every decent Fusion collection and for the younger listeners who might have missed this gem this is a golden opportunity to learn something about real music. Essential listening! | ALPHONSE MOUZON ~ IN SEARCH OF A DREAM MPS 4029759097273 (Barcode: 4029759097273) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1977 Released: 2014
Conceived and produced by my Friend and Mentor, the celebrated Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, this wonderful and sadly little known album presents a recording by a Fusion supergroup headed by the great American drummer / composer Alphonse MouzonFind albums by this artist. A group of top Fusion players from both sides of the pond, the collective personnel includes, in addition to Mouzon, two more Americans: keyboardist Stu GoldbergFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Bob MalikFind albums by this artist. The European contingent comprises of Belgian guitar virtuoso Philip CatherineFind albums by this artist, German pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and finally Czech bass magician Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist, who plays a funkiest electric bass ever on this album, in addition to his double bass, a very rare occurrence indeed.
Mouzon, aged 29 at the time this music was recorded (the "Happy Birthday" chant heard on the album is about that), was already a Fusion veteran, after being a founding member of Weather ReportFind albums by this artist (with Vitous) and later Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist´s Eleventh HouseFind albums by this artist. His technical proficiency and more importantly superb musicality earned his much respect among his peers and quite a following on the busy Fusion scene. This recording was Mouzon´s second album as a leader for the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label, also produced by Berendt, following the no less outstanding "VirtueFind albums with this title" recorded a year earlier.
Of the nine tracks on this album, six are original compositions by Mouzon, with the remaining three being originals by Catherine, Kuhn and Vitous. They are all superb pieces of music, based on great melodies, complex rhythmic patterns and stunning solo work by all the participants, reflecting Fusion at its best before the genre sadly dwindled into obsessive repetitious doodling.
Hearing this music almost forty years after it was recorded produces a striking realization that it lost absolutely nothing of its original freshness and sounds brilliant as ever, perhaps even more so today, considering what pretends to be music these days. Listening carefully to this album reveals a plentitude of musical details and ideas that went into creating this music, which require talent and dedication. Mouzon´s drumming on this album is of course a delightful reminder of better times.
As all the albums recorded for the MPS label, the recording quality of this album is simply marvelous, with precision and ambience unachieved by almost any other recordings and as such is a true delight to all audiophile music listeners, in additions to being a great document of the era when music truly mattered. | ZBIGNIEW NAMYSLOWSKI ~ LIVE AT KOSMOS, BERLIN ITM 920007 (Barcode: 4250079750061) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1965 Released: 2008
This is an iconic recording by the Polish Jazz quartet led by saxophonist Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist, with German pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, bassist Janusz KozlowskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Czeslaw BartkowskiFind albums by this artist. Recorded live on November 30, 1965 at the East Berlin Kosmos cinema, this is a quintessential piece of Polish and European modern Jazz history. Of the eight compositions present on this album, seven are by Namyslowski and one is by Kuhn.
In order to fully comprehend the meaning of the music captured here, one must in fact look at (and hear) three separate recordings by the Zbigniew Namyslowski quartet spanning a mere one and a half year period, which fully present the history of the Polish Jazz in the making. Starting with the album "LolaFind albums with this title", recorded in August 1964 in London, which was the first Jazz album recorded and released beyond the Iron Curtain by an East European artists, followed by this album from late 1965 and finally by the album "Zbigniew Namyslowski QuartetFind albums with this title" recorded in January 1966, which was Namyslowski´s first recording released as part of the legendary "Polish Jazz" Series.
In the liner notes accompanying this album German critic / historian Bert NoglikFind albums by this artist describes the historic background and the enormous significance of the modern Polish Jazz, which developed independently, almost isolated from the sources of information and influences, reliant only on sporadic radio broadcasts, few LPs trickling illegally and played till they were flat and ever rarer visits abroad. The fact that the Polish Jazz scene was so incredibly vibrant, inventive and beyond all revolutionary is one of the greatest miracles, which escape any attempt of logical or sociological explanation. But the fact remains that Namyslowski and many other Polish Jazz musicians spontaneously re-invented modern Jazz by daring to go where nobody ventured before.
The presence of the German pianist / composer Joachim Kuhn is another fabulous bonus. Kuhn would of course become one of the great leaders of the German Jazz scene in the years to come, but first he drifted where the great East European Jazz revolution was happening, living in 1964 in Czechoslovakia and playing with the legendary SHQFind albums by this artist led by Karel VelebnyFind albums by this artist and then moved to Poland, where he lived in 1965 and met Namyslowski, only to be invited to sit in the piano chair of his quartet. The following year Kuhn, like many other fellow East German musicians, would move over to the West and develop a fabulous musical career of his own.
The music is, of course, absolutely brilliant and the live setting allows for a considerably less constrained treatment of the themes, allowing for truly expanded improvisations, one of which goes beyond the half hour mark, something which was completely unthinkable earlier on. Again, when examining the three a.m. albums, it is interesting to see how the same compositions developed, which of them survived and which were dropped and most interestingly noting Namyslowski´s fascination with odd meters, which would become his trademark.
Drummer Bartkowski, who is the only musician present on all the three a.m. recordings alongside Namyslowski, is an outstanding example of how these young musicians developed rapidly, almost overnight. His contribution is an integral part of the music. Bassist Kozlowski, who plays on this album, was also present on the studio album recorded a few months later. His performance is also absolutely top notch.
Surprisingly enough, the sound quality is very decent compared to other archival recordings of that period, which enhances the overall experience of listening to these fabulous recordings. In all honesty there have been very few other archival Polish Jazz discoveries, if any at all, which are comparable to this monumental document. The fact that this music was buried for over forty years is a crime, but now that it finally sees the light of day, all serious music connoisseurs should be absolutely delighted. Such gems are as rare as the Koh-i-Noor and should be treated accordingly. Absolutely essential!

This is a reissue of the debut album by the American drummer Mark NauseefFind albums by this artist, originally released on the legendary German CMPFind albums on this label label. The album presents six original compositions, most of which were composed or co-composed by Kuhn, except one percussion duet which is credited to Nauseef and Gurtu.
The music presents a wide variety of styles, from Rock, via Jazz-Rock Fusion, Jazz-World Fusion and up to Improvised Music, which is completely unpredictable but always fascinating. There are definitely composed parts, but most of the music is improvised, using a plethora of instruments, both acoustic and electronic, producing a sound which was way ahead of its time.
In retrospect this music sounds as innovative today as it was at the time of its recording, completely free of any stylistic constrains and instrumental conceptions. The strong rhythmic layer of drums / percussion adds a feeling of vitality and urgency and the piano / saxophone parts by Kuhn are absolutely stunning, catching him at his very best.
Overall this is a blast from the past, which is most welcome to be back in circulation after a very long period of absence. For true Fusion connoisseurs this album is a Holy Grail which should be a part of any serious music collection.
As usual the remastered music and excellent liner notes make this reissue a must have. The ChickadiscFind albums on this label label is a subsidiary of the excellent Polish GADFind albums on this label Records, which by now is a trademark of quality.

Ponty´s previous MPSFind albums on this label album "Sunday WalkFind albums with this title", recorded 4 years earlier, exposed Ponty´s revolutionary approach to his instrument, but this recording shows how much and how fast he advanced, moving from mainstream Jazz towards much more adventurous surroundings, often including Free, improvised passages. Of course his incredible sense of melody is still present, albeit subtly hidden sometimes. Ponty composed four of the five tunes (the first three are parts of a suite, which occupied Side A of the original LP). The last tune is composed by Kuhn. The playing is phenomenal all the way, both in the more melodic and the completely Free parts, perfectly summarizing the first period of Ponty´s musical journey. Not too long after recording this album Ponty will change his musical direction and create his own admirable brand of Fusion, which will bring him fame and international exposure. But this particular album remains his most notable Jazz achievement. Produced by the legendary Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, this is a must to all European Jazz fans and particularly those who love the violin. A classic!

The group recorded a couple of albums on the legendary German MPSFind albums on this label label, of which this was the first. The group played a completely innovative music, which moved freely between genres and included Free Jazz, Jazz-Rock Fusion, Psychedelic and World Music elements. All five members of the group were splendid musicians, blessed with virtuosity and inspiration, and the rapport between them was phenomenal. This album sounds today as advanced and oracular as it did at the time of the recording, losing nothing of its freshness, a true timeless masterpiece. The Brazilian percussionist Ivanir “Mandrake” Do NascimentoFind albums by this artist appears as a guest on some of the tracks and adds his magic to the mix. | HEINZ SAUER ~ IF (BLUE) THEN (BLUE) ACT 4111 (Barcode: 614427411129) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 2009 Released: 2012
This is a re-edition of a wonderfully intimate album by the veteran (born 1932) German saxophonist / composer Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist, which consists of a series of duo pieces with two brilliant German pianists: Michael WollnyFind albums by this artist (born 1978) and Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist (born 1944), separated by time as members of two distinct generations, but united by their musical creativity. Each of the pianists performs eight duos with Sauer, which are partly spontaneously improvised and partly based on standards, most of those by Miles DavisFind albums by this artist. Sauer recorded several duo albums with Wollny, but this is first encounter with Kuhn in a duo setting.
The music moves between freely improvised pieces and improvisations based on familiar melodic themes, but the overall atmosphere is full of fragile melancholy and introvert meditation. Sauer´s unique sound and blowing technique creates a magic atmosphere, which is supported by the piano as a frame of reference. At times it seems that the saxophone and the piano are both improvising on separate planes and than these planes intersect and collide creating a new multidimensional universe of sounds.
This music is a superb manifestation of European Jazz at its most elusive and mystic manifestation, where the musicians play minimalistic phrases separated by moments of silence and weaving a tapestry of complex, subtle pieces, which sound like soundtracks of imaginary movies. It is as aesthetically aloof from the Jazz tradition as humanly possible, and yet it is entirely Jazz based, simply existing on a celestial rather than earthly plane.
Overall this is surely one of the most fascinating examples of the "Art of the Duo" Jazz recordings, which deserves an honorary place in every respectable music collection. This kind of music can be listened to repetitively, with a good chance of discovering previously hidden treasures with each consecutive visit. Obviously I recommend it wholeheartedly to all serious Jazz connoisseurs and followers of the European Jazz scene. A true Gem!

Legendary MPSFind albums on this label producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist, who had close ties to the Polish Jazz scene, was aware of Seifert´s incredible talent and managed to pull off this recording session, bringing on board a superb team of players, which consisted of German pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and an American rhythm section: bassist Cecil McBeeFind albums by this artist and drummer Billy HartFind albums by this artist. Dutch pianist Jasper van`t HofFind albums by this artist also participates on one track.
Seifert composed all the music on this album, which is a great example of typical Eastern European Jazz, which cleverly combines elements of modern American Jazz, especially that of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, with Folklore and Classical influences. Seifert´s "obsession" with Coltrane´s music and his improvisational technique are plainly evident, especially during the up-tempo numbers. The album´s title track is dedicated to Coltrane´s pianist McCoy TynerFind albums by this artist.
Hearing the album 35 years after it was recorded makes one realize how great music gets better with time, losing absolutely nothing of its initial grandeur. Both Seifert and Kuhn play some incredible solos here and the rhythm section supports them admirably every step of the way. Tragically, just three years after this music was recorded Seifert died, stricken by cancer, before his endless potential was realized and recognized properly.
Seifert managed to record several albums in the US before his untimely death, but this album is definitely his most important and most perfect legacy. Absolutely essential!

  | SHQ ~ [S+H]Q + FRIENDS INDIES HAPPY TRAILS 731 (Barcode: 8595026673120) ~ CZECH REPUBLIC ~ Jazz Recorded: 1964 - 1965 Released: 2016
This is the fourth of a series of eight reissue / archival albums presenting the recorded legacy of one of the Godfathers of Czechoslovak modern Jazz, vibraphonist / pianist / saxophonist / composer / bandleader Karel VelebnyFind albums by this artist and his SHQFind albums by this artist ensemble. All the music is beautifully remastered and the album comes with extensive liner notes, extremely well researched and full of discographical information, sadly only in Czech language (which works fine for me, but probably less so for other enthusiasts who also might be interested).
This album presents material captured during three recording sessions from November 1964. The eight tracks that were recorded during these sessions were released as the second SHQ LP, shortly after the release of the debut.
The SHQ lineup on these sessions included the basic quintet with Velebny, who played vibraphone and piano, tenor / baritone saxophonist / flautist Jan KonopasekFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Laco DecziFind albums by this artist, bassist Jan ArnetFind albums by this artist and drummer Laco TroppFind albums by this artist, which was extended by a plethora of other musicians to form lineups varying from a septet to a thirteen piece band, which included: guitarist Rudolf DasekFind albums by this artist, trombonist Zdenek PulecFind albums by this artist, bassist Jiri MrazFind albums by this artist (a.k.a. George MrazFind albums by this artist), East German (at the time) pianist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist and many others.
The bonus tracks include three rare recording from 1965 of a short-lived SHQ quartet lineup comprising of Velebny, Dasek, Mraz and drummer Milan MadarFind albums by this artist and one track recorded in 1964 by the quintet lineup above, all released on a Various Artist compilation LP or a SHQ compilation LP.
The music, similarly to the debut album, includes mostly American standards, with just two original compositions (one each by Dasek and Velebny), but this time the large ensemble arrangements take the music quite away from its Bebop origins, and shows more sophisticated approach to orchestration and harmonic structures, bringing back the music to its European base. The bonus tracks are in contrast mostly original and point towards future development of the SHQ identity.
As expected the performances are phenomenal and with the presence of the formidable guests the music shows a much wider scope of local Czechoslovak talent and beyond. In retrospect the list of the names is a sad indication of the tragic fate of Czechoslovak Jazz, which resulted in many of its finest musicians fleeing their homeland. For example both Konopasek and Mraz fled to US, Kuhn fled to West Germany to join his older brother Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist and additional famous Czech musicians like Miroslav VitousFind albums by this artist, Jan HammerFind albums by this artist and others did the same, before the "Velvet Revolution" finally freed Czechoslovakia from the Socialist shackles.
For fans of European Jazz and its history, the entire series is an absolute must, and the fact that most of this music is available on CD for the first time makes it an absolute treasure. Absolutely brilliant!
My personal thanks to Jaromir KratochvilFind albums by this artist, the owner of Indies Happy TrailsFind albums on this label, for his friendship and the incredible job he is doing to keep this music alive! Side Note Since the 1950s Czechoslovakia had a highly developed Jazz scene, certainly in proportion to its population, which included many successful ensembles and even Big Bands, as well as Jazz clubs, festivals and publications, all this in spite of state censorship and political limitations. The similar situation existed since the 1960s as far as Rock (including Progressive Rock and Jazz-Rock Fusion) was concerned, resulting in many excellent, interesting and innovative ensembles.
The music was relatively well documented by the three state owned record labels: SupraphonFind albums on this label (founded in 1927), PantonFind albums on this label (founded in 1968) and OpusFind albums on this label (founded in 1971 and based in Bratislava, created on the base of Slovak division of Supraphon). Following the "Velvet Revolution" in 1989, the state owned record labels were privatized, with Supraphon dominating the local market.
However, Supraphon was quite reluctant as far as exploring its vast back catalogue is concerned, and this is where the small independent Indies Happy TrailsFind albums on this label Records, a reissue label dedicated to the preservation of the recorded legacy of Czechoslovak music, owned and run by the devoted enthusiast / historian Jaromir KratochvilFind albums by this artist, founded in 2007, comes in. Over the years the label released a plethora of brilliant music, reissuing long deleted LPs and extensively exploring the archives in search of bonus material.
The quest of Indies Happy Trails is similar to what the GADFind albums on this label Records label, run by Michal WilczynskiFind albums by this artist, is doing for Polish music, with similar consistency and praiseworthy dedication.

  | VARIOSPHERES ~ LIVE IN SOLOTHURN ZBIGNIEW SEIFERT FOUNDATION 2 (Barcode: 5907222048016) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1976 Released: 2017
This is an archival release of a live recording by the European quartet VariospheresFind albums by this artist, led by the legendary late Polish Jazz violinist Zbigniew SeifertFind albums by this artist, which also included Belgian pianist Michel HerrFind albums by this artist, Swiss bassist Hans HartmannFind albums by this artist and Polish drummer Janusz StefanskiFind albums by this artist. They perform six compositions, four of which were composed by Seifert, one by Herr and the remaining one is unidentified.
Variospheres, which existed actually in two different lineups, was Seifert vehicle for European touring and of course part of his personal development as a composer and a player. Recorded in January of 1976 this live performance was a beginning of a hyperactive period in Seifert´s life. In that year alone he recorded albums with Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist ("SpringfeverFind albums with this title" for AtlanticFind albums on this label) and Charlie MarianoFind albums by this artist ("Helen 12 TreesFind albums with this title" for MPSFind albums on this label) and his first album as a leader ("Man Of The LightFind albums with this title" for MPS) as well as his solo violin album ("Solo ViolinFind albums with this title" for EMIFind albums on this label which was released only a couple of years later). Sadly that year also brought the discovery of his illness, which took his life just three years later.
The music is typical of the modern European Jazz of that period, which was heavily involved in post-Coltrane Free improvisation and constant search of new forms of expression. The European scene, on both sides of the Iron Curtain, was buzzing with incredible productivity and discovery, and Seifert and his quartet represent the atmosphere of the period perfectly.
Although the sound quality of this recording is far from perfect, it manages to bring forward the incredible intensity of the music and the total involvement from the musicians. Seifert and Herr deliver lengthy fiery solos and the rhythm section supports the music and drives it ahead, both during the more swinging parts as well as during the freely improvised parts. Seifert´s incredible compositions are always a delight.
The importance of the fact that this music is finally seeing a release, over forty years after it was recorded, is enormous. It adds to Seifert´s relatively limited recorded legacy and sheds light on a very interesting period in European Jazz, which is always more than welcome. For the numerous Polish Jazz and Seifert´s music connoisseurs this is an obvious must, and we should all be grateful to the Zbigniew Seifert FoundationFind albums on this label, run by the incredible Aneta NorekFind albums by this artist, who is also the author of the excellent Seifert´s biography, for faithfully bringing Seifert´s legacy into the limelight!

  | VARIOUS ARTISTS ~ POLISH RADIO JAZZ ARCHIVES VOL.20 POLSKIE RADIO 1872 (Barcode: 5907812248727) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1964 Released: 2015
This is the twentieth installment in the new series of releases initiated by the Polish Radio, which presents archive Jazz recordings. Radio recordings are always a fabulous source of remarkable material, and as far as Polish Jazz history is concerned, the Polish Radio, which was a state monopoly for 45 years, recorded over time a plethora of invaluable material, which apart from the albums released by the Polskie Nagrania record company (also a state monopoly), is the only available additional source of Polish Jazz recordings. For many years Polish Radio recorded concerts presented during Poland´s most important Jazz venues, including the annual Jazz Jamboree Festival and many other festivals as well.
The ten tracks collected here were recorded during the seventh Jazz Jamboree Festival, which took place between October 24 and 26 1964 in Warsaw. The music was performed by four different ensembles, which are: a quartet led by the German brothers Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist on clarinet and Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist on piano with Polish rhythm section consisting of bassists Tadeusz WojcikFind albums by this artist or Juliusz SandeckiFind albums by this artist (here misspelled as Julian) and drummer Andrzej DabrowskiFind albums by this artist (four tracks), a trio led by Hungarian bass virtuoso Aladar PegeFind albums by this artist with Polish pianist Wojciech KarolakFind albums by this artist and drummer Andrzej Dabrowski (also four tracks), a quintet led by Polish pianist / composer Andrzej TrzaskowskiFind albums by this artist with trumpeter Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Janusz MuniakFind albums by this artist, bassist Jacek OstaszewskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Adam JedrzejowskiFind albums by this artist (one track only) and finally a trio led by Dutch pianist Pim JacobsFind albums by this artist with his brother Ruud JacobsFind albums by this artist on bass and guitarist Wim OvergaauwFind albums by this artist (also one track only).
Most of the music consists of standards and the only original material is one piece by Rolf Kuhn and the only track by the Trzaskowski quintet, which was composed by Stanko and which is absolutely the best and most interesting track on this album.
The beautifully restored sound quality is excellent and the warm ambience of the analog recording is a true joy. As usual with this series, which is very reasonably priced, I miss the presence of "in depth" liner notes / booklet, which should convey the circumstances at which this music was recorded and its importance to the development of Jazz in Poland. Nevertheless this is an absolutely essential piece of Jazz history which every Jazz fan will surely consider an absolute must.

  | VARIOUS ARTISTS ~ POLISH RADIO JAZZ ARCHIVES VOL.27 POLSKIE RADIO 2059 (Barcode: 5907812247126) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 1965 Released: 2016
This is the twenty-seventh installment in the series of releases initiated by the Polish Radio, which presents archive Jazz recordings from the radio vaults.
The tracks presented here were recorded live in December 1965 during the eighth Jazz Jamboree Festival in Warsaw and are the second volume of a collection of tracks from that event.
The first two tracks present a trio led by one of the Godfathers of modern European Jazz, the German pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist with bassist Klaus KochFind albums by this artist and drummer Reinhard SchwartzFind albums by this artist. They perform two original compositions by Kuhn and the performance is one of the earliest examples of European Free Jazz. Kuhn´s performance here is absolutely stunning as everything he played at the time, before he moved from East German to West Germany. The fact that his Free Jazz playing was tolerated by the GDR regime is a fascinating story by itself. More details about his activity around the time this music was recorded ban be found in the review of the Zbigniew NamyslowskiFind albums by this artist´s album "Live At Kosmos, BerlinFind albums with this title", which was recorded just a month earlier.
The next four tracks present a quintet led by another Godfather of modern European Jazz, the German trombonist / composer Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist with saxophonists Gunter KronbergFind albums by this artist and Heinz SauerFind albums by this artist, bassist Gunter LentzFind albums by this artist and drummer Ralf HubnerFind albums by this artist. They perform three original compositions by Mangelsdorff and one composition by the British trumpeter / composer Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, a great pioneer of modern British Jazz. Although the music performed by the Albert Mangelsdorff quintet is not as Free Jazz oriented as that by Joachim Kuhn, it is a superb of early modern European Jazz, which was already emancipated from the American Jazz influence and clearly showed the new direction being created in Europe. Both these performances show the importance of German musicians as co-creators of early European Jazz.
The last track present a sextet led by yet another Godfather of modern European Jazz, the Polish Jazz pianist / composer Andrzej TrzaskowskiFind albums by this artist with American trumpeter Ted CursonFind albums by this artist (who was living in Europe at the time), saxophonists Janusz MuniakFind albums by this artist and Wlodzimierz NahornyFind albums by this artist, bassist Jacek OstaszewskiFind albums by this artist and drummer Adam JedrzejowskiFind albums by this artist. They perform one extended original composition by Trzaskowski. The music is again a stunning example of early modern European Jazz and a great precursor of the explosion of the Polish Jazz scene, which was happening at the time.

  | BARNEY WILEN ~ DEAR PROF. LEARY PROMISING MUSIC 44106 (Barcode: 602517024816) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion Recorded: 1968 Released: 2008
French saxophonist / composer Barney WilenFind albums by this artist is known to Jazz fans mostly for his role in the 1957 recording with Miles DavisFind albums by this artist of the legendary “Ascenseur pour l`échafaudFind albums with this title” soundtrack. But a decade later, Wilen left standard American Jazz behind and took an active role in the burgeoning new European scene in search of new musical adventures. He formed a group called Amazing Free Rock BandFind albums by this artist with young upcoming players like Swiss guitarist Mimi LorenziniFind albums by this artist, German keyboardist Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, German bassist Gunter LenzFind albums by this artist and two drummers, Italian Aldo RomanoFind albums by this artist and German Wolfgang PaapFind albums by this artist. As the group’s name suggests, they combined contemporary Rock with Free Jazz, creating an amalgam they called Free Rock. This album is a document of this attempt, and one of the earliest Jazz-Rock Fusion recordings. The material includes mostly contemporary Pop and Rock anthems, with a couple of original compositions and one Jazz composition by Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist. The result is one of the wackiest albums ever recorded and a great document of the era. As the title suggests, Psychedelic instances probably had much to do with the resulting music. Although the music did not withstand the test of time as well as other MPS recordings, producer Joachim BerendtFind albums by this artist thought at the time that this experiment was worth preserving for posterity, and we are (in retrospect) grateful. Superbly remastered and elegantly packaged by Promising MusicFind albums on this label, this is a great trip down the memory lane. Definitely worth investigating.
