  | MILES DAVIS ~ AT NEWPORT 1955-1975: THE BOOTLEG SERIES VOL.4 COLUMBIA 888750819529 (Barcode: 888750819529) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1955 - 1975 Released: 2015
This is the 4th installment of the "Bootleg Series" live recordings by American trumpeter / composer Miles DavisFind albums by this artist, released by ColumbiaFind albums on this label Records. This time the recordings originate from the performances by Davis and his various groups as part of the annual Newport Jazz Festival, which still functions uninterruptedly since its inception in 1954 and served over time as one of the most important icons of American Jazz.
This 4 CD set spans twenty years of performances by Davis at Newport, starting with his appearance as a member of an all-star ad-hoc ensemble in 1955 and ending with his group´s appearance at the 1975 edition of the festival. It also includes two live recordings made in Europe (Germany and Switzerland) during the Newport Festival European tours.
With the exception of the first four tracks on CD 1, which include the above mentioned 1955 performance, which is rather badly recorded and completely banal musically, the rest of this set is, as expected, absolutely brilliant, with every second being completely revealing and historically significant. The 1958 appearance features the legendary first quintet with John ColtraneFind albums by this artist, the 1967-68 appearance features the even more legendary second quintet, the 1969 appearance features the core of the "Bitches BrewFind albums with this title" group, the 1971 appearance features the group with Gary BartzFind albums by this artist and finally the 1973-75 appearances feature the double guitar (Pete CoseyFind albums by this artist and Reggie LucasFind albums by this artist) and no keyboards group with Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist (or Sam MorrisonFind albums by this artist).
Since the tracks are arranged (almost) chronologically, this set wonderfully depicts the transformation of Davis and his groups during that period, expanding the horizons of Jazz (and music in general) in a radical way, which only an Artist of his vision and prophetic drive could achieve. Considering the fact that most of this music was previously unreleased and the recording quality is quite excellent, this set is simply irresistible to every Davis fan. This music remains absolutely timeless and fresh, completely untouched by the tides of time; the Holy Grail!

  | MILES DAVIS ~ THE COMPLETE ON THE CORNER SESSIONS COLUMBIA 06239 (Barcode: 886970623926) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1972 - 1975 Released: 2007
This is the 8th (and apparently the last) chapter in the ColumbiaFind albums on this label’s epic series of Miles DavisFind albums by this artist Box Sets, which is a monumental reissue project of recordings by the most important Jazz musician of the 20th century. Recorded between March 1972 and May 1975 this the music includes everything Miles recorded for Columbia before his 5 years of retirement from recording due to health problems, before resuming his career in 1980. The inventory is pretty amazing: 4 years, 16 sessions, 21 musicians and over 6 hours of groundbreaking music, which although rarely given credit for it, changed to face of music for years to come. Incorporating Funk, Fusion, World Music, Rock, Soul and of course Jazz, this music re-defined the basic conceptions of the musical universe. Anything recorded later on this planed could be traced back to some extent to these sounds, be it Hip-Hop, Rock, Electronic and Ambient Music, House, and Dance, including of course contemporary Jazz and Fusion. The music is completely groove oriented, with very little (and often without) melody, with a loose and completely atmospheric jamming over a repetitive and hypnotic rhythms, created masterly by bassist Michael HendersonFind albums by this artist, continuing the direction initiated on The Cellar Door Sessions 1970Find albums with this title. Miles on trumpet, Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist, Carlos GarnettFind albums by this artist and Bennie MaupinFind albums by this artist on saxes, Chick CoreaFind albums by this artist and Herbie HancockFind albums by this artist on keyboards, John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, Reggie LucasFind albums by this artist and Pete CoseyFind albums by this artist on guitars, Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist and Al FosterFind albums by this artist on drums and quite a few other players contribute to this heavenly music, under the Master’s spiritual leadership. The music included here appeared in various edited forms on the albums: On The CornerFind albums with this title, Big FunFind albums with this title and Get Up With ItFind albums with this title, but most is heard here for the first time. It is almost impossible to describe how far out and pioneering this music is. It presents not only a completely new sound and approach to performing music, but also a new way to create music as a flow of the subconscious creative process. Over 30 years after it was recorded, it still sounds revolutionary and poignant, as it undoubtedly will continue to sound in the days to come. I can’t imagine anybody who calls himself a music lover not to own this music and listen to it periodically to recharge his or her emotional batteries. Beyond essential!
A special note to collectors: The initial release of all the Miles Davis Box Sets in this reissue series is packaged in an exquisite metal-bound (except chapter 5 which is cardboard-bound) frame housed in a hard cardboard CD-sized slipcase (except for chapters 1 & 8 which have a metal slipcase). Once the initial release is sold out, the CDs are repackaged in a tall-box digipack book format. Naturally the tall-box issues have a much lower retail price tag. All the initial release CD-sized issues become priceless collectors’ items in time.

  | MORDY FERBER ~ MR. X HALF NOTE 4205 (Barcode: 015095420527) ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz Recorded: 1995 Released: 2000
This is the 2nd album as a leader by Israeli guitarist / composer Mordy FerberFind albums by this artist, recorded with a spectacular lineup, which includes American saxophonists Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist and George GarzoneFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Brad HatfieldFind albums by this artist, bassist Eddie GomezFind albums by this artist, drummer Jack DeJohnetteFind albums by this artist and Brazilian percussionist Nana VasconcelosFind albums by this artist. The album presents seven tracks, six of which are original compositions by Ferber and one is by Charlie HadenFind albums by this artist. This is a second edition of the album.
Ferber, born in 1958 near Haifa, was one of the several young Israeli musicians, who frequented my home while growing up and getting into Jazz, partly under my influence. By the end of the 1970s and in early 1980s Ferber became a most sought after Israeli session guitarists and took part in recording many legendary albums at the time. He left to study at Berklee, like many other Israeli Jazz musicians, and decided to stay in the US, visiting Israel occasionally.
The music floats between melodic contemporary Jazz and some more Fusion influenced pieces, all beautifully put together and performed by this highly talented team. His guitar performances are nothing short of stellar and the entire album is a great piece of delightful music, which sadly never achieved the proper attention on the US scene, which has always been flooded by way too many releases. He recorded several more albums but his output sadly does not reflect his great talent, which is a great pity.
Overall, this is a beautiful album, full of great music and spectacular playing, which is criminally little known both in Israel and on the global scene. The contributions by Eddie Gomez are especially stunning and alone worth getting a copy of this album. Of course guitar enthusiasts should be also fully satisfied. A great piece of personal nostalgia for me.

  | GEORGE GRUNTZ / CONCERT JAZZ BAND ~ TIGER BY THE TAIL TCB 26702 (Barcode: 725095267021) ~ SWITZERLAND ~ Big Band Jazz Recorded: 2005 Released: 2006
This is a fabulous album by the Swiss pianist / composer / bandleader George GruntzFind albums by this artist and his Concert Jazz BandFind albums by this artist, which for many years was the best European Jazz Big Band / Orchestra. Gruntz was one of the great Godfathers of European Jazz and his many activities and contributions over the years advanced the Jazz idiom immensely. The album was recorded in the US, and presents a mixed American / European lineup, with some of the finest Jazz musicians on the planet. The album presents eight compositions, four of which were composed by Gruntz and another four by members of the Big Band. Gruntz wrote the arrangements and orchestrations of all the pieces. Among the musicians playing on this album one can find trombonist Dave BargeronFind albums by this artist, drummer Danny GottliebFind albums by this artist, trumpeters Marvin StammFind albums by this artist, Jack WalrathFind albums by this artist and Franco AmbrosettiFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Chris HunterFind albums by this artist and Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist, Israeli bass guitarist Arie VolinezFind albums by this artist, a. m. o.
The music, although kept within the mainstream Big Band setting, in incredibly innovative and original, clearly pointing out the many differences between American and European Big Band approach. The arrangements and orchestrations are complex and convoluted, constantly changing the dynamics and tempi, with less emphasis on the individual solos and more dedicated to the overall orchestral sound and interplay.
Although Gruntz is sadly no longer with us, his wonderful music lasts and his extensive recorded legacy is a treasure chest of musical gems. Not to be missed!
Overall, this is a monumental piece of Big Band music, at its finest and most sophisticated form, which should be truly enjoyed by all connoisseurs of that Jazz sub-genre. For young musicians, especially those studying composition and arrangement, this is an open book of how things should be done.

  | MATEUSZ KOLAKOWSKI / DAVE LIEBMAN ~ LIVE AT JAZZ STANDARD, NEW YORK FENOMMEDIA 009 (Barcode: 5907604327098) ~ POLAND ~ Jazz Recorded: 2008 Released: 2009
This is a live recording captured at the NY Jazz Standard club by a duo comprising of young Polish Jazz pianist Mateusz KolakowskiFind albums by this artist and legendary American saxophonist Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist. Although Kolakowski and Liebman were email buddies for quite a while, they actually met in person just a few moments before this music was recorded, which explains why the majority of the material is based on Jazz standards. Of the six pieces on this album, five are standards (one is even repeated twice, taken from two different sets) and the remaining one is a free on the spot improvisation.
Kolakowski was at the time a Classical Music student and his Jazz tendencies were all self cultivated, which is quite apparent when listening to the music. He not only quotes Classical music themes but his entire approach to harmony and rhythm is strongly based in Classical music. This dichotomy between Classical music and Improvised music has certain charm, but is also a hindrance, which is hard to ignore. Liebman, on the other hand, is Godly, as always, with every note just in the right place and his virtuosity, taste and spirit of cooperation being impeccable.
Since this is a duo album, the decisive factor is the way the two musicians perform together, rather than their individual statements. It seems that the fact this music works out one way or another is due only to the enormous experience and musicality of Liebman, who is able to cope with Kolakowski´s limitations, rather than the duo´s spiritual unity. Nevertheless the overall result is certainly entertaining and worth being listened two, especially in view of its "one of its kind" setting, which can also be educational. The fact that Liebman is always open to work with young and less experienced musicians is truly commendable.

  | JOACHIM KUHN ~ I`M NOT DREAMING / DYNAMICS ART OF GROOVE 80232 (Barcode: 885513802323) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1983 - 1990 Released: 2014
This is a reissue of two albums by German pianist / composer Joachim KuhnFind albums by this artist, which were originally released on the German CMPFind albums on this label label, owned and operated by recording legend / producer Walter QuintusFind albums by this artist. After a spell of activity in the Jazz-Rock Fusion idiom in the 1970s, Kuhn returned to experimentation in the Avant-Garde Jazz and contemporary Classical music in the 1980s, and these two albums reflect his work in that decade.
"I`m Not DreamingFind albums with this title", recorded in 1983, marks the beginning of the association between Kuhn and Quintus and his CMP label. It was recorded by a quintet, which features two Germans: cellist Ottomar BorwitzkyFind albums by this artist (a Classical musician) and multi-instrumentalist Herbert ForschFind albums by this artist, and two Americans: the legendary trombonist George LewisFind albums by this artist and percussionist Mark NauseefFind albums by this artist (resident in Germany). Together they form a formidable ensemble, which performs seven original compositions by Kuhn.
The music is floating somewhere between Free Jazz and contemporary Chamber Classical music, which is based on composed themes but is then expanded by extensive improvised passages. Over thirty years later this music is still as challenging and fresh as it was at the time of the recording, and remains a significant piece of the modern European Jazz history.
"DynamicsFind albums with this title", recorded in 1990, is a solo piano album, which presents seven pieces, five of which were composed by Kuhn and two are interpretations of music composed by Eric DolphyFind albums by this artist and Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist.
Again, rather than playing completely improvised music, Kuhn prefers to have a compositional framework to guide him, as he creates his improvisations. Kuhn is of course one of the most important European Jazz pianist and his solo piano albums are always examples of sublime musicality, impeccable aesthetics and of course brilliant technique. This is demanding, serious music, which demands concentration and dedication in order to be fully appreciated and understood, but eventually it is as much rewarding.
This reissue brings back to life some of the great European Jazz, that sank into the background in time, but which certainly deserves to be cherished and remembered. Therefore the Art Of GrooveFind albums on this label label deserves to be shown gratitude for their work in this area.

  | ROLF KUHN ~ AFFAIRS INTUITION 3211 (Barcode: 750447321120) ~ GERMANY ~ Jazz Recorded: 1997 Released: 1997
Following the recent demise of the great German clarinetist / composer / bandleader and one of the Godfathers of the modern German Jazz, as well as a dear Friend, Rolf KuhnFind albums by this artist, I decided to dig into my shelves and write about some of his albums I did not review previously.
Kuhn recorded this album with a bunch of friends from the US and Germany, a list that proves his status as one of the most admired Jazz musicians on the international scene. The list includes saxophonists Ornette ColemanFind albums by this artist and Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Randy BreckerFind albums by this artist, guitarist Chuck LoebFind albums by this artist, fellow clarinetists Eddie DanielsFind albums by this artist and Buddy DeFrancoFind albums by this artist, trombonist Albert MangelsdorffFind albums by this artist, bassist Dieter IlgFind albums by this artist and drummer Wolfgang HaffnerFind albums by this artist. The music includes some standards and some original compositions by Kuhn and the participating musicians, altogether ten tracks of great performances, which showcase Kuhn’s versatility playing anything between Swing to Free.
These relaxed sessions are an ideal opportunity to allow the musicians to get the absolute best out of themselves, all supporting Kuhn as the main soloist, who is simply brilliant every step of the way.
Kuhn a sublime example of a total musician, with a career spanning decades and crossing styles from Swing to Avant-Garde, always with grace, intelligence and professionalism beyond reproach. For clarinet lovers, this album is an absolute revelation.
Overall, this an instant classic, full of brilliant music and heavenly performances, which is absolutely perfect from start to finish. Goodbye Friend!

  | DAVE LIEBMAN ~ BACK ON THE CORNER MASCOT 7219 (Barcode: 8712725721925) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 2006 Released: 2007
In June of 1972 Miles Davis entered the studio to record one of the most radical statements of his entire career – the legendary On The Corner album. Moving further away from conventional jazz, this music was all about funk and groove, based on hypnotic bass riffs. Miles used an extended group of musicians on this session, some of them “Miles veterans” (McLaughlin, Corea, Hancock) and others “Miles first-timers”, including the saxophonist Dave Liebman. Playing with Miles was of course an event, which would jump-start Liebman’s career, who was in time to become one of the finest American jazz players of all times. 34 years later Liebman returns to these sessions with fond memories and pays tribute to the Master by recording this excellent album. Using his regular quartet (Vic Juris – guitar, Tony Marino – bass and Marko Marcinko – drums) and strengthened by ex Miles Davis sideman Mike Stern and legendary bassist Anthony Jackson, Liebman recreates the atmosphere of the On The Corner sessions splendidly. Liebman wrote most of the music, but he also uses two Miles-penned tunes from that album (“Black Satin” and “Ife”) to emphasize the connection. Everything works like magic here: the music is beautiful, the musicians excellent and the grooves are able to wake the dead. It’s been quite a while since I had such a good time with a new jazz album. Do yourself a huge favor and grab this ASAP.

  | DAVE LIEBMAN ~ COLORS HATOLOGY 600 (Barcode: 752156060024) ~ USA ~ Jazz Recorded: 1998 Released: 2003
Although rarely in the limelight, American saxophonist / composer Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist has been one of the most consistently outstanding Jazz musicians in the last four decades. From his recordings with Miles DavisFind albums by this artist in the early stages of his career and later on as a leader of his own groups, his outstanding contribution to modern music is unquestionable. His stylistic versatility, deeply aesthetic approach to music as an Art Form and obvious virtuosity, all these combined with his charming personality (which I´ve been privileged to witness first hand) amalgamate into a unique and exceptional Artist. This album presents Liebman "in flagrante delicto", metaphorically making love to his instrument while performing a set of solo pieces. Unaccompanied solo performances are always the "naked truth", which exposes the artist totally and is completely unforgiving towards any attempts to fake artistry. Liebman has nothing to hide of course; on the contrary his solo statements are even more powerful than his performances with other musicians. This is his second solo recording, preceded by the album "The TreeFind albums with this title" recorded in the early 1990s. As usual, Liebman forays into uncharted territory with his beautiful vistas, charming the listener like a snake trainer and keeping him in trace. This incredible music, in spite of being potentially difficult, works like a charm and I can´t imagine any sensitive listener not falling under its spell. Brilliant stuff!

The album was recorded in a sextet setting with vocalist Sheila JordanFind albums by this artist, pianist Steve KuhnFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist, synthesizer player Lyle MaysFind albums by this artist and drummer Bob MosesFind albums by this artist, and it presents ten tracks, all composed by Swallow, with lyrics by the American poet Robert CreeleyFind albums by this artist.
The music is strongly melodic and often outright romantic, perfectly suiting the “Jazz & Poetry” idiom and the idiosyncratic poetry by Creeley, who was a magician of the poetic expression and could tell a story in just a very few words. Jordan, my favorite American Jazz vocalist, is absolutely perfect for the role of the storyteller, and albeit the fact that the lyrics are often minimalist, she sets the mood for the entire album.
The music is quite mainstream oriented, with most of the melodic content carried by Kuhn, who is brilliant as always. Surprisingly, Liebman plays some of the most well-behaved saxophone solos of his career on this album, without pushing the boundaries. Mays stays mostly in the background, as does Moses, but Swallow’s round bass lines are firmly present.
Overall, this is a very well-played and sung “Jazz & Poetry” album, with excellent contributions by all the participants, but does not break any new ground or demands a particular intellectual effort to enjoy the music for what it is.

  | UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO JAZZ ORCHESTRA ~ SWEET RUBY SUITE NOT ON LABEL ~ CANADA ~ Jazz Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016
This is a lovely album recorded by the University Of Toronto Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist directed by Gordon FooteFind albums by this artist and featuring two guest stars: the British vocalist Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist and American saxophonist Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist. The album is a tribute to trumpeter / composer Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist, who although associated with British / European Jazz, was born in Canada and left for Britain in 1952 when he was just 22 years old. The album presents four compositions, all by Wheeler and with lyrics by Winstone, including the title piece, which lasts almost half an hour and which Wheeler first recorded with the Canadian Maritime Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist in 2002.
Wheeler´s music is of course irresistible and when combined with a fine orchestra, Winstone´s vocal performances and Liebman´s saxophone pyrotechnics, the album is a most pleasant listening experience.
The orchestra, although consisting of students of the Faculty of Music of the University, performs splendidly, including the soloing by some of the orchestra members. It is perhaps less polished and biting than other orchestras involving experienced Jazz veterans, especially so in Europe, but all thing considers there is nothing wrong with the way they perform the music and overall they stand up to the challenge with shining colors.
Winstone, as usual, delivers heartfelt and musically thrilling vocal parts, which are always a true honey on the ears. She is probably the most reliable Jazz vocalist ever and in the span of the last five decades I have never heard her sing anything less than perfect.
Liebman, as expected, also delivers what he does best; wonderfully structured and devilishly complex soprano saxophone solos, which beautifully ornament and enrich the proceedings.
The album was released in a very modest packaging and it seems that it is not commercially available, which is a great pity as it truly deserves to be heard by as many Jazz connoisseurs as possible. If you can find it – grab it ASAP before it will become nowhere to be found. Wholeheartedly recommended!

By the mid-1970s West Germany became a true Mecca of European Jazz. The great economic resurgence allowed benevolent support of Arts by the German regional and Federal governments, and Jazz became a highly popular and flourishing Artform, bursting with concert activity all around the country. The many indoor and outdoor Jazz festivals, venues ranging from newly constructed concert halls to small clubs and cellars, music schools with Jazz departments and a vast number of thriving independent record labels, like MPSFind albums on this label, ECMFind albums on this label and EnjaFind albums on this label, to mention but a few, all these created a climate, which not only enabled the local musicians to flourish, but also acted like a magnet pulling Jazz musicians from all over the world to move to Germany and take part in the celebration of creating the new European Jazz miracle.
Since Europe was at the time literally split by the Iron Curtain into “West” and “East”, moving to Germany from the USA or other West European countries was a breeze. However, as far as East European Jazz musicians were concerned, such move was, more often than not, only but a dream. That did not mean, of course, that some of them would not try, and eventually also succeed to make such transition.
Born in Krakow in 1945, Polish Jazz saxophonist / flautist / composer / educator Leszek ZadloFind albums by this artist was one of the first Polish Jazz musicians, who managed to make the “West” their new home. He moved first to Austria, in 1966, where he polished his education and performing skills, playing constantly with the best local and visiting international Jazz players. There he recorded his debut album “Inner SilenceFind albums with this title” in 1973. In 1975 Zadlo relocated to Germany, settling in Munich and quickly becoming an integral part of the busy local scene.
This album presents a live recording by Zadlo with an international quartet, which includes American pianist Larry PorterFind albums by this artist, who was one of the many US musicians staying at the time in Germany, and a German rhythm section comprising of bassist Gunter LenzFind albums by this artist and drummer Joe NayFind albums by this artist. The concert was a part of the 1. New Jazz Festival, which took place in Hamburg in June of 1975. The festival’s concerts were presented at two legendary local venues: “Fabrik” and “Onkel Pös Carnegie Hall”, where the music on this album was recorded. The Festival’s lineup included several ensembles, led by important international Jazz artists, like Norwegian Terje RypdalFind albums by this artist, American Dave LiebmanFind albums by this artist, German Eberhard WeberFind albums by this artist and… Polish Tomasz StankoFind albums by this artist, another proud representative of the Eastern European Jazz scene. Parts of the performances by these artists were included on a commemorative album released by the Polydor label later that year. The fact that Leszek Zadlo was invited to take part in this important festival speaks volumes about his status as a part of the evolving European Jazz Avant-Garde.
The music is, as expected, a brilliant example of European Free Jazz / Improvised Music hurricane, exploding with emotions and sublime musicianship. Zadlo’s “infatuation” with the music of John ColtraneFind albums by this artist is obvious, but Zadlo offers his very own voice and interpretation of Freedom, which is perhaps less wild and instinctive, but rather more expressive and balanced, without losing touch with the world around. There is no doubt that Zadlo was at that period of his life perhaps the most “Coltrane oriented” European Jazz musician, all the way as total as the great Master, and with complete and full control of his faculties. Watching Zadlo on stage was like facing a Force of Nature, being totally and utterly swept by flow of his energy, all of which is wonderfully captured herein. His partners in crime are completely up to the task, as expected. It would be a sin to leave this music dormant in the vault and I am extremely happy to see it out in the open.
Love you my Friend, as always! Side Note The above are my liner notes included on this album's artwork.
I am honored when asked by the Artists to write liner notes for their albums, always hoping that my words reflect the true spirit of the music. This is also a symbol of our mutual respect and friendship developed over the years.
The same is also true when Record Labels ask me to write liner notes for their releases, mostly in the case of reissues of archival albums, which is a symbol of their appreciation of my knowledge and historical perspective and my recognition of their dedication to the preservation of the history of recorded music and the effort to keep human Culture and Aesthetics alive.
