BARBARA THOMPSON ~ FIRST LIGHT
JAZZ IN BRITAIN 54 (Barcode: 5060774190524) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1971 - 1972 Released: 2023

This is an album collecting three archival live recordings / radio broadcasts by the late British Jazz saxophonist / composer / bandleader Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist, which present her in various settings with the crème de la crème of the British Jazz musicians active in the early 1970s. As a result, it is a companion album to the tremendous 14CD Box Set “Live At The BBCFind albums with this title” by Barbara Thompson, released in 2020 by RepertoireFind albums on this label Records, offering material uncovered after the Box Set was released. This album, released by the Jazz In BritainFind albums on this label label, is a completely non-commercial release, with all profits from the album going to the Cure Parkinson’s Trust, a moving gesture by all the people involved, including Barbara’s and Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist’s daughter Ana GraceyFind albums by this artist and Jazz In Britain founder John ThurlowFind albums by this artist. We all still mourn Barbara’s and Jon’s untimely departures of course.

The first two tracks present the Group EFind albums by this artist, which comprised of (in addition to Barbara) vocalist Pepi LemerFind albums by this artist, pianist Peter LemerFind albums by this artist, bassist Johnny DyaniFind albums by this artist and drummer Laurie AllanFind albums by this artist. The music is Avant-Garde Jazz, with superb vocal parts by Lemer, who sadly is often forgotten, but was one of the most interesting Jazz vocalist of the period.

The next three tracks present a suite for a Big Band, called “The Awakening”, co-composed by Barbara and Jon. The band features a dreamy lineup of eleven instrumentalists and a vocalist – no other than my beloved Norma WinstoneFind albums by this artist – which reads like a Who’s Who of the modern British Jazz and is conducted by Neil ArdleyFind albums by this artist. The players are: trumpeters Ian HamerFind albums by this artist, Kenny WheelerFind albums by this artist and Henry LowtherFind albums by this artist, trombonist Derek WadsworthFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Don RendellFind albums by this artist and Barbara Thompson, cellist Charles TunnellFind albums by this artist, pianist Howard RileyFind albums by this artist, vibraphonist Bill Le SageFind albums by this artist, bassist Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon Hiseman. The music is absolutely brilliant and very typical of the Big Band recordings recorded at the time by Neil Ardley, Mike WestbrookFind albums by this artist and others. The vocal parts by Winstone are, not surprisingly, my favorite jewels, but the entire suite is simply divine and the fact it was discovered and now released is no less than sensational.

The last five tracks are by Barbara’s group JubiabaFind albums by this artist, which comprised of (in addition to Barbara) trumpeters George ChisholmFind albums by this artist and Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, Wadsworth, Le Sage, Peter Lemer, bassist Roy BabbingtonFind albums by this artist, drummer Martin DrewFind albums by this artist and percussionist Trevor TomkinsFind albums by this artist. It presents the early version of the band, which was essentially dedicated to combining Jazz with World Music influences, mostly Latin. As far as I am aware, this is the earliest recordings by Jubiaba captured on tape.

Overall, this is an absolute jewel from start to finish and an absolute must to all British Jazz enthusiasts, and in retrospect one of the most surprising and important releases by the Jazz In Britain label so far. The Big Band piece alone is a beacon symbolizing the birth of the modern British Jazz, with everything it stands for: ingenuity, originality, groundbreaking musical thinking and enormous talent. Hats off to everybody involved!

GENTLE GIANT ~ GENTLE GIANT

Formed by the Shulman brothers: vocalist Derek ShulmanFind albums by this artist, bassist / violinist / vocalist Ray ShulmanFind albums by this artist and saxophonist / vocalist Philip ShulmanFind albums by this artist, following the demise of their previous group Simon Dupree & The Big SoundFind albums by this artist, Gentle Giant recorded this stunning debut, which changed the face of music forever. Combining musical influences spreading such diverse areas as medieval madrigals and modern Jazz, the group managed to create a completely new sound and in fact even a new musical language, influencing generations of musicians all over the world for generations to come. Funny, zany and deadly serious, this music is essential listening to any serious music fan and of course an important piece of the Prog canon. Absolutely essential!

Dr. Rafael Augusto Lara Palmeros
Debut album by one of the most impressive, extraordinary and eclectic bands in the Prog Rock History. Gentle Giant was known for the complexity and sophistication of its music and for the varied musical skills of its members, all of them, except the first two drummers, were multi-instrumentalists. The Shulman Brothers (Derek, Ray and Phil), Kenny Minnear, Gary Green and Martin Smith with additional musicians (Paul Cosh, tenor horn on ´Giant´ and Calire Deniz, cello on ´Isn´t it quiet and cold´) were a great ensamble. The band´s music was considered complex even by progressive rock standards, drawing on a broad swathe of music incluiding Folk, Jazz, Bluez, Classical Music, Baroque, Mediaeval Music, Modernist Chamber Music elements. In this work, we found multi-part vocal harmonies, complex lyrics, frequente changes in tempo, frequent use of syncopation and polymeters, use of complex melodies, frequently contrasting harmonies with dissonance, extreme use of instrumental and vocal counterpoint, use of clssical and mediaeval instrumentation, use of musical structures typically associated with Classical Music (madrigal, fuga, etc, etc) and the consistent use of stated exchanged and recapitulated muscial themes exchangend between instruments. ´Giant´,´ Alucard´,´Nothing to all´,´Funny ways´, ´Why not?´, are excelent tracks of this extraordinary albumn. Essential !!!!. 5 stars.

IF ~ IF
REPERTOIRE 1037 (Barcode: 4009910103722) ~ UK ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2006

Thi is the debut album by the superb British Jazz-Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist, formed in 1969 by three representatives of the burgeoning British Jazz scene, which was experiencing an unprecedented surge of creativity and revolutionizing the Jazz form at the time. Although partly inspired by American Jazz-Rock pioneers like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist and ChicagoFind albums by this artist, which were gaining wide popularity at the time, If was quintessentially different from its American counterparts.

Essentially Jazz-Rock was "invented" in Britain several years earlier by musicians like Graham BondFind albums by this artist and others, creating a distinctive "sound and feel", which was quite different from the development of the genre on the other side of the pond. The Americans based their bands on the rich "brass" tradition, which was perfected over the years by countless Big Bands and Brass bands, adding an aggressive rock backbeat to the music, whereas the British used a different approach, which basically left the Jazz environment intact, rejuvenating it with modern rhythmic approach and electric instruments (and in some cases adding Rock vocals), but remaining faithful to the Jazz idiom. In short where the American Jazz-Rock mainly rocked, the British Jazz-Rock mainly swung.

If were a great example of these differences and although short-lived, the band produced some of the most exquisite examples of British Jazz-Rock ever recorded. The core of the band comprised of the extraordinary guitarist Terry SmithFind albums by this artist, saxophonist / flautist Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist and another saxophonist / flautist Dave QuincyFind albums by this artist (please note the absence of trumpeters). All three musicians had behind them several years of playing Jazz in various ensembles and were amongst the most gifted young British players at the time. Supported by a great and versatile rhythm section: keyboardist John MealingFind albums by this artist, bassist Jim RichardsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Dennis ElliottFind albums by this artist and fronted by unusually gifted and able vocalist J.W. HodkinsonFind albums by this artist, If were an absolutely perfect combination of talent and abilities, which actually worked. This, combined with the abilities of the "in house" composers (mostly Morrissey and Quincy), who crafted incredible melodies; crispy, complex and intelligent yet "easy" on the ear, made If a lean and mean music making machine of staggering proportions. All three main instrumental soloist were wonderful musicians, which is evident on this album from start to finish, but the most incredible work was surely performed by guitarist Terry Smith, who uses every trick in the book and beyond, always fresh and unconventional.

It is most interesting to compare Smith´s work with Chicago guitarist Terry KathFind albums by this artist (what a coincidence – both named Terry), who also was the most gifted instrumentalist in his band. Smith´s adaptation of Jazz guitar techniques into Rock as opposed to Kath´s improvised Rock guitar playing again emphasize the differences between the two bands. Words of praise should also go to If´s vocalist, who demonstrated exceptional feel on top of his wide range and clear, effortless treatment of even the trickiest challenges.

To summarize, If in general and this, their debut album in particular, are superb examples of what great music is all about. Although mostly forgotten and rarely mentioned in most references, this album is as essential to every Jazz-Rock fan as the air he breathes. Ignoring it would constitute an act of criminal negligence, not to mention the complete void in one´s musical education. Did I say essential?

REPERTOIRE 1038 (Barcode: 4009910103821) ~ UK ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2006

2nd album by the superb British Jazz-Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist, recorded in late 1970 in New York´s Hit Factory studios while they were on tour in the USA. This album is a direct continuation of the splendid job they started on their eponymous debut album just a few months earlier; same lineup and same great music, performed brilliantly from start to finish. The group toured the US and Europe at a frantic paste, which left little time to develop new material, but due to the presence of several great composers in the band they managed to come up with another set of brilliant compositions, performing them with zest and their usual intensity. The American studio didn´t manage to bungle the British sound of the band, which is most fortunate, setting them apart form their American counterparts (see the notes about the debut album on that subject). Despite their extensive touring and exposure, somehow If never achieved the success they so much deserved, neither in the US nor at home. In retrospect the reason might have been simply that they were just too good to "make it" commercially. Fortunately we have their recorded legacy to enjoy, and enjoy we will. This is an absolute essential Jazz-Rock recording of the highest musical quality and an indispensible item in any serious music collection.

By the time they recorded this album, the band was at the peak of its powers, following extensive touring and polishing of their act. The experience, combined with the incredible amount of talent the band members possessed turned their second recording session into a magical ride, which produced one the greatest Rock albums of all times. The material, mostly written by Wright, is wonderfully consistent and the heavy sound of whaling organ and screaming guitar behind Harrison´s incredible vocal excursions is absolutely stunning. Although rarely mentioned in Rock encyclopedias and other sources, this album epitomizes everything that was great and unique in British Rock at the time – complete artistic freedom, unlimited talent, great production and that sound, which unfortunately is now lost forever. There is not a dull moment anywhere on this album, with one exciting peak chasing another, a complete roller-coaster of musical rush. Sadly enough, this monumental achievement was not to be repeated again, although the remaining future output of the band is incredibly solid right to the very end. Together they possessed an incredible amount of talent, which turned then instantly into one of the best Rock acts on the British Isles at the end of the 1960s. Their material, mostly written by Wright, was a mixture of Rock, Blues and proto-Prog with Psychedelic influences, performed with a dense heavy sound dominated by Wright´s organ, somewhere between Procol HarumFind albums by this artist and Led ZeppelinFind albums by this artist. Grosvenor played some fantastic guitar licks and the rhythm section was second to none with Ridley´s heavy but virtuosic pulsations and Kellie´s spectacular pyrotechnics. Together with Harrison´s incredible vocal abilities, which combined the forces of everything from Robert PlantFind albums by this artist, via Rod StewartFind albums by this artist to Roger ChapmanFind albums by this artist, the band had the ability to outshine any if its contemporaries, and they certainly did a fantastic job on their debut album, which is an incredible blast of energy and ingenuity, turning it into an instant classic. This is the third album by the superb British Jazz-Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist, recorded in London following a grueling touring schedule in the US and Europe in the months before the recording. Although worn out by touring, the band was tighter and more experienced than ever, keeping the same lineup from the very start, which is evident by their playing on this album (although they were brilliant from day one). They also had more time to work on new material, which proved to be as inspiring as always, but more focused on melody and arrangements rather than the display of extended instrumental improvisations. In many respects this is the most "perfect" If album, closest in spirit to great British Jazz-Rock essence.

In spite of intensive touring in the US and Europe, the band never had a chance to record live (which was almost compulsory then) and this was their attempt to recreate the atmosphere of their gigs. Although recorded in a studio, it is live in every respect, i.e. a large crowd was present in the studio during the recording and no overdubs or other studio trickery were used in the recording. The resident band composers came up with a great set of new tunes, rehearsed on the road before the actual recording captured here. This recording is closer in spirit to the first two albums the band recorded, full of spontaneity and superb extended soloing. The guitar work by Terry SmithFind albums by this artist is absolutely outlandish and the other players follow suit. The 10+ minutes opening track is alone worth the price of any album and a superb example of the Jazz-Rock at its best in every respect. Unfortunately shortly after this session and a brief personal change the band fell apart as a result of Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist´s illness. Although Morrissey revamped the band later on, which recorded three more albums using the If moniker, those were far apart from the glorious material recorded by the original group. For various management and contractual reasons this album was not released in the US in its entirety (as were the first three albums); instead the "WaterfallFind albums with this title" album released in the US included some of the material present here with the addition of different material recorded for that particular release. This is an essential Jazz-Rock recording of the highest musical quality and an indispensible item in any serious music collection.

CHRIS SPEDDING ~ ONE STEP AHEAD OF THE BLUES

British musician Chris SpeddingFind albums by this artist is one of the greatest guitar heroes of all times, but somehow the spotlight keeps missing him time after time. His incredible work with many top musicians is well documented on record, but his solo efforts are definitely less know. This album, which was first conceived in 1994 and then finally recorded in 2001 remained unreleased for another 8 years until it was finally released on the legendary RepertoireFind albums on this label label, after it was remixed, remastered and expanded with some bonus material. Spedding plays a lovely tribute to the great Blues tradition by including mostly classic Blues material rather than his original compositions. Brilliant stuff and a must to all Blues-Rock enthusiasts!

ROBIN TROWER ~ THE PLAYFUL HEART
REPERTOIRE 1142 (Barcode: 4009910114223) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock

This is the 19th solo studio album by the legendary British Rock guitarist / bassist / vocalist / songwriter Robin TrowerFind albums by this artist, recorded in a trio format with bassists Glenn LetschFind albums by this artist or Livingstone BrownFind albums by this artist (on three tracks only) and drummer Pete ThompsonFind albums by this artist. Davey PattisonFind albums by this artist is the vocalist on five tracks and Trower on all the rest. The album presents eleven tracks, all of which originals by Trower.

Following his departure from the iconic Procol HarumFind albums by this artist, Trower pursues a solo career since 1973, with dozens of albums to his credit. He manages miraculously to stick to his own formula of creative Blues-Rock, which he follows in the sixth decade of his career. His guitar playing is still sharp and clear-cut and his vocals are still as powerful as always, and he does not need to reinvent himself or search for any new avenues, doing what he does best. His many fans love his music, and that’s what matters the most.

There are very few Rock personalities of his statue and legacy still standing today and every new album he releases is an unmistakable blast, on which he definitely takes, as usual, no prisoners.

Overall, this is an excellent Blues-Rock album, with beautifully melodic tunes, solid vocals and sensational guitar playing, which has but a few contenders. Trower’s many followers need no encouragement of course and some of the self-proclaimed new guitar aces would be wise to take a listen. Brilliant stuff!

GRAHAM BOND ~ LIVE AT THE BBC AND OTHER STORIES
REPERTOIRE 1279 (Barcode: 4009910127926) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1962 - 1972 Released: 2015

This is a Box Set of archival material by British saxophonist / organist / composer / bandleader Graham BondFind albums by this artist, one of the most idiosyncratic and pioneering figures of the British Jazz, Jazz-Rock and Prog scenes. The material collected here consists mostly of recordings made by the BBC, but includes also some ultra-rare home recordings, demos and other ditties, covering the period between 1962 and 1972, which more or less presents Bond´s entire career before his tragic death in 1974, aged just 36 at the time.

Regardless of what various music history sources have to say, Bond is singlehandedly responsible for the creation of the Jazz-Rock idiom around 1963, when he formed the Graham Bond QuartetFind albums by this artist, which featured guitarist John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist, bassist Jack BruceFind albums by this artist and drummer Ginger BakerFind albums by this artist (which were all destined to become superstars in the years to follow). The quartet amalgamated Bond´s experience with the Jazz world, gained while he was a member of the Don RendellFind albums by this artist Quintet, with the exploding Rhythm And Blues phenomenon, creating the earliest manifestation of Jazz-Rock known to man. One session of the Don Rendell Quintet with Bond as its member is included here and it also features as a guest musician saxophonist Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist, who would become another of Bond´s close associates when he formed the seminal Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist in 1965, which was later joined by the celebrated drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. Following the Organization´s breakup Bond formed the Graham Bond InitiationFind albums by this artist and later on collaborated with the poet / lyricist Pete BrownFind albums by this artist, who wrote also the booklet that accompanies this Box Set. Their recordings together are the last (chronologically) tracks in this collection.

The music included in this collection is of varied quality and sometimes of pretty Lo-Fi sound quality, even after it was carefully restored and remastered, but it is of enormous historic importance, as it documents not only Bond´s career but in fact the entire British Jazz scene, which was experiencing at that time a tremendous upheaval and explosion of new talents and ideological modifications of the very fabric of Jazz, which was parting from the American dominance and creating a new variety of the idiom, which would crystallize as European Jazz, spawning Jazz-Rock in the process.

Bond´s performances on the Hammond Organ are all superbly executed and it makes perfect sense that they influenced an entire generation of British musicians, who invented Progressive Rock next, such a Jon LordFind albums by this artist of Deep PurpleFind albums by this artist, Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist of ColosseumFind albums by this artist, Brian AugerFind albums by this artist and of course many others. In general the music portrays the atmosphere of the British scene at the time, where genres and classifications were pretty arbitrary and where the Jazz / Rock / Prog idioms were influencing and embracing each other with ease and natural affinity.

Kudos to the German RepertoireFind albums on this label label, which is one of the most important sources of reissues, for the meticulous work done on this set and for bringing this material back to life. This set continues the work done by Repertoire on the previous Graham Bond Box Set called "Wade In The Water – Classics, Origins and OdditiesFind albums with this title", which covers the recordings by Graham Bond Organization. Together these two Box Sets pay tribute to one of the greatest heroes of the British Jazz / Jazz-Rock pioneering figures, who is sadly often forgotten and is rarely given the credit he deserves for his revolutionary creativity.

IF ~ IF 5
REPERTOIRE 1289 (Barcode: 4009910128923) ~ UK ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 2016 Released: 2016

This is an album by a reunion edition of the legendary British Jazz-Rock Fusion and Brass-Rock band IfFind albums by this artist, formed in 1969 and active for just over three years, releasing four brilliant studio albums and some live material that was also released since. If is one of my all time favorite bands as far as British Jazz-Rock is concerned. This reunion incarnation includes two original If members: saxophonist Dave QuincyFind albums by this artist and guitarist Terry SmithFind albums by this artist. They are joined by keyboardist Guy GardnerFind albums by this artist, bassist Ben TaylorFind albums by this artist, drummer Rod BrownFind albums by this artist and vocalist Dave BrowneFind albums by this artist. Together they perform eight pieces, six of which are original compositions (five by Quincy and one by Gardner) and two are standards.

The music is a mixture of mainstream Jazz and Rhythm And Blues, sadly nowhere near the brilliant material of the original band, neither as far as the compositions are concerned nor the actual playing. Honestly this band sounds like an amateur band playing a gig in a pub, which is an insult to the memory of the original band.

This is a kind of an album which should have never been recorded and even worse released (and sold!) and shows the sarcasm and cynicism of the record label capitalizing on a band´s name. A shame!

CHRIS FARLOWE ~ FROM HERE TO MAMA ROSA
REPERTOIRE 1331 (Barcode: 4009910133125) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2017

This is a reissue of the fourth album by the seminal British vocalist Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist, one of the most distinctive voices of the British Isles´ musical history. His career started in the early 1960s and he was at the epicenter of the British Rhythm And Blues explosion with his group The ThunderbirdsFind albums by this artist. He was considered as one of the top three acts of the era, together with Georgie FameFind albums by this artist and the Blue FlamesFind albums by this artist and Zoot MoneyFind albums by this artist and the Big Roll BandFind albums by this artist. Farlowe recorded no less than three albums in 1966, all excellent examples of the Blues and Rhythm And Blues. In time The Thunderbirds morphed into The HillFind albums by this artist, the group that accompanies Farlowe on this album, which included guitarist Steve HammondFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Peter RobinsonFind albums by this artist, cellist Paul BuckmasterFind albums by this artist, bassist Bruce WaddellFind albums by this artist and drummer Colin DavyFind albums by this artist. The original album presented nine tracks, all but one composed by Waddell or co-composed by him. This reissue adds three bonus tracks.

Musically this album is very different from Farlowe´s earlier Rhythm And Blues recordings and it has a distinctive Progressive Rock flavor, which is hardly surprising considering that soon after the recording of this album Farlowe was about to join the mighty ColosseumFind albums by this artist and later also Atomic RoosterFind albums by this artist, two of the most important representatives of the British Progressive Rock and Jazz-Rock Fusion.

The album presents excellent tunes, all beautifully performed, with impressive instrumental soloing, as appropriate for the Prog idiom. Superb Hammond organ parts and of course cello, which was quite unusual in the Rock setting.

In retrospect this is one of those rare gems that almost completely slipped under the radar of the Prog fans over the tears, which can be rectified with this reissue of course. As for Farlowe, some listeners seem to be allergic to his unique vocal capabilities and theatrics, but personally he was always one of my favorite vocalists, with very few equals over the years.

This is definitely one of the best albums of his solo recording legacy, all of which are definitely worth checking out. It´s great to see this album back in circulation and hopefully it won´t be missed out by his many fans this time. This is a little known gem, which deserves to be heard!

ATOMIC ROOSTER ~ ON AIR: LIVE AT THE BBC & OTHER TRANSMISSIONS
REPERTOIRE 1336 (Barcode: 4009910133620) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1970 - 1972 Released: 2018

This is an archival album by the British Progressive Rock group Atomic RoosterFind albums by this artist, founded by keyboardist / composer Vincent CraneFind albums by this artist. The album offers a collection of live material, recorded for the BBC Radio 1 and German and Belgian TV. The two CDs present all the audio material and the DVD presents the TV video material, which means that the audio tracks are duplicated as the soundtrack of the video material. Altogether this package offers eighteen audio tracks, most of which were composed by Crane, and fourteen video tracks (two of them duplicated as different camera positions). The majority of the material was captured in 1972 with just two songs recorded in 1970 and another two in 1971, by older lineups of the group. Most of the material is performed by the lineup that features Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist on lead vocals, Crane on Hammond organ and other keyboards, Steve BoltonFind albums by this artist on guitar and Ric ParnellFind albums by this artist on drums, the lineup that recorded the "Made In EnglandFind albums with this title" album. All the music was meticulously remastered and offers a superb sound quality.

Crane was undoubtedly one of the absolute top British Prog keyboardists of the time (late 1960s and early 1970s), every bit as good as Keith EmersonFind albums by this artist, but without the bloated pretentiousness, and stylistically close to Brian AugerFind albums by this artist. His work with Arthur BrownFind albums by this artist was absolutely light years ahead of the time and his Atomic Rooster years established also his position as a composer, who managed to come up with some of the most impressive Rock riffs ever. His imagination and inventiveness were absolutely unique.

Farlowe, who as my readers know already, I consider as one of the top Prog vocalists ever, offers the entire range of his sensibilities from Soul, Rhythm And Blues, Rock and Jazz, and his performances here are the best support to my claims as to his importance. Bolton and Parnell also perform spotlessly and with great energy, precision and above all god taste.

Overall this is a superb opportunity to revisit some of Prog´s best moments, which still offered bold statements and iron balls, before the genre went completely into self-pity, lethargic excursions into nowhere and above all everlasting boredom. This music is full of zest, ingenuity and nontrivial musical adventures and is a wonderful time capsule preserving these moments for posterity.

Early British Prog enthusiasts will find this collection essential and filling a gap in the Atomic Rooster story with material that is not readily available. As usual with the RepertoireFind albums on this label label, this album is excellently packaged and offers knowledgeable liner notes by their resident music historian Chris WelchFind albums by this artist. Wholeheartedly recommended!

REPERTOIRE 1346 (Barcode: 4009910134627) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

This is a sensational archival Box Set, which collects the BBC recordings by the first incarnation of the seminal British Jazz-Rock Fusion / Progressive Rock group ColosseumFind albums by this artist. The 6CD Box Set covers the BBC recordings captured between 1969 and 1971. Colosseum was formed in 1968 from the ashes of the Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist by drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist (both members of GBO). Hiseman’s wife, saxophonist / flautist Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist and the entire New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist (NJOFind albums by this artist) guest on selected tracks. The sound quality is fabulous, as usual with BBC recordings, and the remastering, packaging and enclosed highly informative booklet are top notch

Colosseum were one of the most imaginative and intelligent early Fusion / Prog bands ever and managed to create a highly unique sound and musical aesthetics. A perfectly balanced amalgam of Jazz, Rock and Blues, which they created, remains largely unmatched to this very day. Their success can be mostly credited to the perfect blend of their musical personalities and immense collection of diverse talents, as well as the leadership of Hiseman, who was one of the most important British musicians of his generation. I was lucky to know Jon and watching him and the band perform was always a revelation.

This Box Set covers the material included on the band’s first three (or four, depending on how detailed one wants to dig) studio albums and complements perfectly their only live album, which is undoubtedly one of the best live albums ever recorded. In many respects the music included here shows more of the Jazzy aspects of Colosseum than the live album, which is more Blues-Rock oriented. These versions of the tunes are often dramatically different from the versions appearing on the studio album and feature extensive soloing and improvisations.

These six CDs offer an incredible wealth of music, hair-raising instrumental performances and a sublime glimpse at the period when music was at its absolute creative peak. There are but a few groups that managed to achieve the same level of intensity and inventiveness ever since.

For Colosseum fans this Box Set is absolutely essential of course, but the interest goes way beyond just that. British Jazz and Fusion enthusiasts will be also thrilled; as should any music loving person on this planet be as well. This music is beyond recommendation, a true Holy Grail!

JCM ~ HEROES
REPERTOIRE 1354 (Barcode: 4009910135426) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

This is the only album by the British trio JCMFind albums by this artist comprising of three ex-ColosseumFind albums by this artist members: guitarist Clem ClempsonFind albums by this artist, bassist / vocalist Mark ClarkeFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. The album presents ten songs and one instrumental, mostly originals by the trio members, a couple of Jack BruceFind albums by this artist songs, one Graham BondFind albums by this artist song and four songs involving guitar heroes that the album is dedicated to: Gary MooreFind albums by this artist, Ollie HalsallFind albums by this artist, Alan HoldsworthFind albums by this artist and Larry CoryellFind albums by this artist.

The music floats between Rock oriented songs and Jazz-Rock Fusion material, all beautifully executed by the three veterans, who prove to be timeless heroes themselves. Clempson still plays some superb guitar licks that very few other guitar players around are able to compete with, Clarke sings with great sensitivity and Hiseman, one the greatest drummers of all time, as well as an excellent recording engineer and producer, does a perfect job as well. Sadly, this was his last recording before his untimely death, shortly after the album was released.

For Colosseum fans, British Prog / Jazz-Rock Fusion enthusiasts, guitar freaks and all good music lovers around the world this album is a breath of fresh air, although it sits firmly in the tradition established well over five decades earlier. The saying “they don’t make music like this anymore” obviously does not apply to this album. Brilliant stuff!

BARBARA THOMPSON ~ LIVE AT THE BBC
REPERTOIRE 1376 (Barcode: 4009910137628) ~ UK ~ Jazz

Recorded: 1969 - 1990 Released: 2020

This is a monumental 14CD Box Set by British saxophonist / flautist / composer / bandleader Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist, the mightiest female heroine of the British Jazz scene in the last six decades. The Box Set collects 27 radio broadcasts recorded between February 1969 and June 1990, an incredible document not only of Thompson’s incredible career, but basically of the entire two decades of the most intense British Jazz history. Painstakingly collected, organized and remastered / restored, the music is an orgy of some of the most intense music played on the British Isles at the time.

The music is performed by the absolute Who’s Who of the British Jazz scene at the time, starting with Barbara’s husband Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist, who stood by her side since they married in 1967 for many years until his tragically premature death in 2018. But reading the credits of the participating musicians is like reading an encyclopedia of British Jazz. Thomson appears here as a member of the New Jazz OrchestraFind albums by this artist (NJOFind albums by this artist) and groups led by other musicians, but principally as leader of her own ensembles, including JubiabaFind albums by this artist and ParaphernaliaFind albums by this artist. Many compositions appearing here were her own and many of them are previously unreleased.

Of course it is rather futile to describe such vast amount of music, all of which is obviously brilliant, so rather than doing so I can only recommend to every British Jazz fan to get a copy of this Box Set as long as it is available. It includes hours upon hours of superb musicianship and infinite creativity, that must not be forgotten.

This is also a splendid opportunity to thank the BBC for supporting British Jazz (and British music in general) for so many years, recording the music and broadcasting it consistently and on the way collecting a bottomless vault of musical treasures, which see the light of day often only decades later. A huge portion of British Jazz recordings exist solely due to all this activity.

Overall, this is an absolute treasure chest of music, which deserves to be heard by future generations. It is also a beautiful example of dedication and painstaking work by many people, who contributed to create this release, and of course all deserve our thanks for making it happen.

COLOSSEUM ~ LIVE05
REPERTOIRE 1382 (Barcode: 4009910138229) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2005 Released: 2024

This is a reissue of a 2CD live album by the seminal British Jazz-Rock Fusion group ColosseumFind albums by this artist, recorded in 2005. Colosseum, founded in spring of 1968 by drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist, went through several personnel changes before disbanding in 1971, after recording several iconic albums. They reunited in 1994 and continued performing and recording albums with a lineup, which included the two founding members and keyboardist Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist, guitarist Clem ClempsonFind albums by this artist, bassist Mark ClarkeFind albums by this artist and vocalist Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist. Following the death of Heckstall-Smith in 2004, Hiseman’s wife saxophonist / flautist Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist joined the band, and this new lineup recorded this live album.

This album was initially released privately on Temple MusicFind albums on this label in 2007 and then on RuffFind albums on this label Records in Germany in 2010, both editions now long gone from the market. This RepertoireFind albums on this label Records reissue, newly packaged and with a booklet designed by Ana GraceyFind albums by this artist (Barbara’s and Jon’s daughter), celebrates Hiseman’s 80th Birthday Anniversary.

The music is a wonderful example of the band’s live act, which includes music spanning their entire career. Although some of that music appears on other live albums, due to the highly improvised nature of the band’s performances, each and every version of these tunes is completely unique. It also reflects the phenomenal agility of Barbara, who joined the group only a few months earlier (although she did play some gigs with the band before formally joining), and blended perfectly into the act, obviously adding her personal fabric to the tunes.

Each and every live album by Colosseum depicts the incredible talents of all the band members, with the spotlight on their abilities as improvisers, since the band’s material was always heavily influenced by Jazz and the live performances were ideal platforms to “go wild” and play lengthy instrumental solos and vocal extravaganzas.

Overall, this is as brilliant as every other Colosseum album, studio and live alike, and if anybody missed the original release of this album, this is an opportunity to repent and correct mistake. Absolutely not to be missed!

Therefore it is hardly surprising that they played exclusively (well almost, see below) material from the second, already recorded but not yet released album. For Colosseum specialists, the version of the suite performed here live is different from the version eventually released on the UK version of the album, with the third part of the suite being "Beware Of The Ides Of Mach" (released on the debut album) to by replaced by "The Grass Is Always Greener" on the studio album.

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2020

This is an archival album by the seminal British Jazz-Rock Fusion / Progressive Rock group ColosseumFind albums by this artist, recorded live in August of 1970 during their Scandinavian tour and presents an early recording of the second lineup of the group. Founded in 1968 by drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist the final lineup included also the charismatic vocalist Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist, superb keyboardist Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist, one of the best British Blues guitarists Clem ClempsonFind albums by this artist and bassist Mark ClarkeFind albums by this artist.

The music includes original material and one piece each by Jack BruceFind albums by this artist and Graham BondFind albums by this artist, which appeared over time on the group’s studio albums, all of which was tested and polished during the band’s many live appearances, reaching a level of perfection, which combined with the highly developed improvisation abilities by the band members (Hiseman, Heckstall-Smith and Greenslade had a Jazz background), produced live performances of unparalleled quality.

This specific concert bursts with energy and enthusiasm, and Hiseman’s lengthy drums solo is an absolute classic. Clempson falls in within the Colosseum modus operandi perfectly from day one and his soloing is sublime as always. With four of the five tracks clicking well over ten minutes in duration, this is a true orgy of improvisation, albeit perfectly well organized. The sound quality of this recording if somewhat iffy, but the remastered material is definitely listenable, compared with the bootleg versions of this album that have been around for ages.

As usual, every instance of Colosseum material, especially as excellently performed as the music included here, is worth its weight in gold. It is truly amazing that this music, almost exactly fifty years young, sounds still so exciting today. Absolutely brilliant stuff!

The two original tunes (one co-written by Clempson and Hiseman and the other by Hiseman) get over-extended versions on this album, timing well over twenty minutes each, which present the incredible instrumental abilities by the band members, including Hiseman’s unique drumming technique.

The sound quality of this recording if truly iffy, and even the remastered version is not easily listenable, albeit somewhat better than the bootleg versions of this album that have been around for ages. Obviously the source material for this material is simply sub-standard.

COLOSSEUM ~ LIVE `71
REPERTOIRE 1396 (Barcode: 4009910139622) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1971 Released: 2020

This is an archival album by the seminal British Jazz-Rock Fusion / Progressive Rock band ColosseumFind albums by this artist, recorded live in February and March of 1971 during their UK tour, which yielded their legendary “LiveFind albums with this title” album, which to this day is considered as one of the most important live concert recordings of all time, which sadly proved to be the last album by the early version of the band.

The music includes mostly original material, which appeared over time on the studio albums, all of which was tested and polished during the band’s many live appearances, reaching a level of perfection, which combined with the highly developed improvisation abilities by the band members (Hiseman, Heckstall-Smith and Greenslade had a Jazz background), produced live performances of unparalleled quality.

The first CD of this 2CD release offers a complete show recorded on February 12, 1971, which as far as I know was previously unissued and is alone worth the price of the album. The show is more relaxed and open to improvisation then the material recorded in March and partly included on the a.m. live album.

The second CD however, is more problematic, since as far as I can see it is identical to the second CD included on the EsotericFind albums on this label reissue “Live (2CD Expanded Edition)Find albums with this title” from 2016, with a confusing, slightly different running order. Why on earth would RepertoireFind albums on this label do this is beyond me.

But as mentioned earlier, every instance of Colosseum material, especially as excellently recorded as the music included here, is worth its weight in gold. It is truly amazing that this music, almost exactly fifty years young, sounds still so exciting today. Absolutely essential stuff!

COLOSSEUM ~ LIVE IN GERMANY
REPERTOIRE 1404 (Barcode: 4009910140321) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1969 - 1971 Released: 2021

This is an archival album, which collects live recordings by the seminal British Jazz-Rock Fusion / Progressive Rock group ColosseumFind albums by this artist. The 2CD / DVD album covers recordings of live concerts in Germany and Austria, captured between 1969 and 1971. Colosseum was formed in 1968 from the ashes of the Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist by drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist (both members of GBO). The first lineup included also keyboardist Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist, guitarist / vocalist James LitherlandFind albums by this artist and bassist Tony ReevesFind albums by this artist. Litherland was replaced by Clem ClempsonFind albums by this artist and Reeves was replaced briefly by Louis CennamoFind albums by this artist and later by Mark ClarkeFind albums by this artist and Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist was added as lead vocalist, turning Colosseum into a sextet. Hiseman’s wife, saxophonist / flautist Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist guests on one track. The sound quality is fabulous, and the remastering, packaging and enclosed highly informative booklet are top notch.

CD1 of the album covers the material recorded in 1969 and 1970 by the German TV show “Beat-Club” (the first four tracks) and the 1969 concert in Vienna (the next four tracks). CD2 covers the 1971 concert in Frankfurt (four long tracks). The “Beat Club” material is also included in video version on the enclosed DVD.

This album offers an incredible wealth of music, hair-raising instrumental performances and a sublime glimpse at the period when music was at its absolute creative peak. There are but a few groups that managed to achieve the same level of intensity and inventiveness ever since.

For Colosseum fans this album is absolutely essential of course, but the interest goes way beyond just that. British Jazz and Fusion enthusiasts will be also thrilled; as should any music loving person on this planet be as well. This music is beyond recommendation, a true Holy Grail!

NUCLEUS ~ LIVE AT THE BBC
REPERTOIRE 1410 (Barcode: 4009910141021) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1970 - 1991 Released: 2021

This is a monumental 13CD archival Box Set by British Jazz-Rock Fusion ensemble NucleusFind albums by this artist, founded and led by trumpeter / composer / author / bandleader Ian CarrFind albums by this artist, one of the key figures on the British Jazz scene for five decades from 1960s on. The Box Set collects 28 radio broadcasts recorded between July 1970 and November 1991, an incredible document of the British Jazz history, the development of the genre in general and Jazz-Rock Fusion in particular. Painstakingly collected, organized, remastered / restored, the music is a priceless tribute to one of the most creative bands active in Britain ever. The Box Set includes an informative booklet with an essay written by Roger FarbeyFind albums by this artist.

The Nucleus lineup included over time the absolute Who’s Who of the British Jazz scene, including many of the first generation of players, who revolutionized British Jazz in the late 1960s. Some of the most prominent figures, who played with the ensemble for many years were saxophonist / keyboardist Karl JenkinsFind albums by this artist, bassist Jeff ClyneFind albums by this artist, drummer John MarshallFind albums by this artist (who apart from Carr plays on almost all the tracks in this Box Set), saxophonist Brian SmithFind albums by this artist, guitarist Chris SpeddingFind albums by this artist and many others. Many of the ensemble members contributed also their original compositions to the repertoire performed by the ensemble, especially in the early days, with Carr’s compositions dominating the repertoire in the later period.

Although Nucleus, contrary to Farbey’s statement, did not pioneer British Jazz-Rock Fusion as such, the ensemble was one of the key focal points of the genre for many years, even after the genre run out of steam by the mid-1970s. Carr was a prolific composer and Nucleus was for many years the best environment to develop and present his compositions in the most successful way.

As usual with such releases, based on material from the BBC vaults, it is imperative to emphasize the role of the BBC in the development of music in Britain, when it supplied the stable platform for musicians to perform, with the music being broadcast (sometimes worldwide) and eventually archived for posterity. This unmeasurable contribution to British Culture is truly phenomenal.

Considering the fact that the music in this Box Set was taken not only directly from the BBC archives but also from many secondary private sources, often with problematic sound quality, the sonic effect, especially of the early material, is not up to par with today’s standards, but in view of its historic quality is welcome here, although with a slight unease.

Overall, this Box Set is a remarkable effort to document the history of one of the greatest Jazz-Rock Fusion ensembles of all times, and considering the fact that it is mostly previously unreleased, it is a collector’s treasure chest. It is definitely somewhat expensive, but for avid collectors it is worth its weight in gold.

IF ~ LIVE AT THE BBC
REPERTOIRE 1427 (Barcode: 4009910142721) ~ UK ~ Brass Rock

Recorded: 1970 - 1972 Released: 2022

This is a sensational archival album by the superb but relatively forgotten British Jazz-Rock Fusion / Brass Rock ensemble IfFind albums by this artist, which to this very day remains as one of the finest examples of the genre. Sourced from the BBC vaults, the double album presents twenty tracks of original music by the ensemble members, recorded over two years, which span the initial life span of the ensemble, all previously unissued.

Following the ensemble’s formative days in 1969, the core lineup stabilized as a septet, which included vocalist J.W. HodkinsonFind albums by this artist, saxophonists/ flautists Dick MorrisseyFind albums by this artist and Dave QuincyFind albums by this artist (who wrote most of the material), keyboardist John MealingFind albums by this artist, guitarist Terry SmithFind albums by this artist, bassist Jim RichardsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Dennis ElliottFind albums by this artist. That lineup recorded the ensemble’s first four iconic albums, called simply “IfFind albums with this title”, “If 2Find albums with this title”, “If 3Find albums with this title” and “If 4Find albums with this title”, and disbanded by the end of 1972. That lineup is featured on all the tracks on this album.

The ensemble reformed with a different lineup and continued until 1975, releasing four more studio albums. A reunion lineup released a studio album in 2016, called “If 5Find albums with this title”, which was a sad affair.

Although stylistically somewhat similar to the American Brass Rock groups like Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist, ChicagoFind albums by this artist, ChaseFind albums by this artist and others, If had a very unique British / European approach, which less emphasis on brass arrangements but way more complex music and sophisticated ensemble sound. For a more detailed comparison, please read my review of the If’s early albums.

Overall, this is a treasure chest of previously unheard material by one of the best British Jazz-Rock ensembles ever, and an absolute must to the genre’s many fans. The sound is a bit iffy, despite the fact that the material was remastered, but the music is outstanding. RepertoireFind albums on this label are doing a remarkable job by bringing the material from the BBC vaults back to life, but their pricing borders on insane and the booklets are a bit trivial and repetitive lately, lacking the proper historical perspective this music deserves. But this is Holy Grail any way one looks at it, so don’t think twice and grab a copy.

COLOSSEUM ~ RESTORATION
REPERTOIRE 1430 (Barcode: 4009910143025) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock

Recorded: 2021 Released: 2022

The legendary British Prog / Fusion band ColosseumFind albums by this artist returns with a new album eight years after their previous studio recording. The lineup, still a sextet, includes three “founding” members: vocalist Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist, guitarist Clem ClempsonFind albums by this artist and bassist Mark ClarkeFind albums by this artist, and three new members: keyboardist Nick SteedFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Kim NishikawaraFind albums by this artist and veteran drummer Malcom MortimoreFind albums by this artist (Gentle GiantFind albums by this artist). The album presents ten songs, most written by the band members, with a couple of songs written by others.

The music is mostly Blues-Rock oriented, and has less (if any) Jazz influences than the previous albums, despite the saxophone present in the lineup. The songs are all solid and highly melodic, but lack the “twist” present in the old Colosseum material.

Farlowe is still a formidable vocalist and Clempson still plays some great guitar solos, but the band is but a shadow of the old Colosseum image. Of course they are better than most contemporary Rock bands, but that is hardly a challenge after all.

Overall, this is a very nice Blues-Rock / melodic Rock album, perfectly executed by veteran musicians, which is a great fun to listen to, but appearing under the Colosseum name is somewhat a misappropriation IMHO. Assumably Colosseum fans will all get a copy…

The album presents nine tracks, mostly written by Swarbrick or traditional songs arranged by him. The CD and DVD present the same material.

The group was supporting their 11th studio album “Gottle O`GeerFind albums with this title”, where most of the songs on this album come from, but some older favorites are also included. The band is in its usual top form and brilliant Folk-Rock feel prevails, mixed with some typical British sense of humor. All these musicians are absolute masters of their respective instruments and listening to them performing brings some mighty fine memories of the times long gone. The great sound quality of this recording add to the overall pleasure.

Overall, this is an excellent time capsule of the British Folk-Rock movement, which ruled the British Isles music scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s, to be later largely forgotten. Any previously unreleased material by Fairport Convention is always a pleasant surprise, so just grab a copy!

REPERTOIRE 1449 (Barcode: 4009910144923) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2003 Released: 2022

This is an archival live 2CD + DVD album by the iconic British Jazz-Rock Fusion group ColosseumFind albums by this artist, recorded / filmed by German WDR TV on September 27, 2003 at the Viersen Jazz Festival, which was part of their 2003 tour in Germany. The material was intended for the legendary “Rockpalast” TV show. The reunited (in 1994) band just recorded their new (at the time) album “Tomorrow`s BluesFind albums with this title” and were in absolute top form. The ailing saxophonist Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist, who would sadly depart just a few months later, was replaced by the fabulous Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist, the wife and life companion of the band’s leader, drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist, and the rest of the superb team included keyboardist Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist, guitarist Clem ClempsonFind albums by this artist, bassist Mark ClarkeFind albums by this artist and vocalist extraordinaire Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist. The album includes several tracks from the new album and a mixture of their classic repertoire, going back right to their debut album. The DVD offers all the audio tracks present on the two CDs and in additional twenty minutes long interview with Hiseman.

The sound and vision quality of the material is absolutely superb and now even enhanced by a careful restoring process, with a stunning result, probably the best among all the many live Colosseum recordings.

The music is of course absolutely Godly from start to finish and Colosseum followers can easily compare this material with their legendary “LiveFind albums with this title” album from 1971, to see that although over thirty years passed by, the band lost absolutely nothing of their fire and power, and managed to polish their show to absolute perfection. The level of the improvisation during the extensive keyboards, guitar, saxophone and drums solos is genial and Farlowe’s vocals are still unbeatable.

With Dick, Barbara and Jon now gone, listening to this album is a deep, almost spiritual experience of longing for friendships lost, and time mercilessly passing for all of us. Great to see the legacy of the greatest band ever still living and new archival material still being released.

Overall, this is an absolutely essential piece of the recorded legacy by this iconic band, which combined Blues, Rock, Jazz and everything in-between better than almost anybody out there, for generations to come. Glittering musical gold!

REPERTOIRE 1459 (Barcode: 4009910145920) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Blues Fusion

Recorded: 1967 - 1973 Released: 2023

This is an archival album by the greatest British Blues Artists of all time, the iconic ninety years old Blues legend John MayallFind albums by this artist. The material originates from the French TV archives and presents twenty-two tracks captured during the five most productive years of Mayall’s early career, both on two CDs and a DVD. The list of participants reads like the Who’s Who of the Blues and Jazz-Blues Fusion history of the Golden Decade: guitarists Mick TaylorFind albums by this artist, Jon MarkFind albums by this artist, Harvey MandelFind albums by this artist and Freddie RobinsonFind albums by this artist, bassists Steve ThompsonFind albums by this artist, Alex DmochowskiFind albums by this artist, Larry TaylorFind albums by this artist and Victor GaskinFind albums by this artist, drummers Keef HartleyFind albums by this artist, Colin AllenFind albums by this artist and Paul LagosFind albums by this artist, saxophonists Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist, Johnny AlmondFind albums by this artist and Red HollowayFind albums by this artist, violinist Don Sugarcane HarrisFind albums by this artist, trumpeter Blue MitchellFind albums by this artist and others.

During those years Mayall’s groups changed constantly, and with the lineup changes also the stylistic direction changed accordingly, moving from classic Blues towards more open, Jazz influenced acoustic Blues and later Brass-Rock Blues. Mayall was constantly searching for new avenues to explore the Blues realm, gradually moving away from the classic traditional Blues songs towards original material.

This compendium of previously unavailable material is of course an incredible historic document of great value. Although the sonic quality is far from perfect at times, but combined with the video footage brings backs fond memories of a time period, when originality and uncompromised creativity was above all. Mayall’s magnificent contribution to music deserves this kind of documentation and Repertoire Records are certainly one of the best activists in that area.

Overall, this is a magnificent addition to Mayall’s recorded history and an absolute must for his many faithful followers. One can only hope for many such archival releases to follow suit. Thank you John for a lifetime of music!

This is an archival release presenting a live recording by the seminal British group ColosseumFind albums by this artist, recorded in Montreux on April 25, 1969 during the European Broadcasting Union international awards festival Rose d’Or. Colosseum, founded in spring of 1968 by drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist and saxophonist Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist, were joined by bassist Tony ReevesFind albums by this artist and keyboardist Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist and initially by guitarist Jim RocheFind albums by this artist, who was soon replaced by James LitherlandFind albums by this artist. The quintet recorded the band´s debut album "Those Who Are About To Die Salute YouFind albums with this title" in the late 1968 / early 1969, which was released in March of 1969. By the time they played this concert they were in the midst of recording their second album "Valentine SuiteFind albums with this title", which was released in November 1969. The live set presents four compositions, including the three-part "Valentine Suite", expanded according to the circumstance, including material from the debut album and the yet unreleased second album. The fifth track was recorded a couple month later, during their appearance at the Monteux Jazz Festival on June 22, 1969. All the performances were also captured on video by the Swiss TV, and are present here on the DVD included in the package.

The music is of course absolutely glorious and epitomizes the early British Jazz-Rock Fusion and to some extent also Progressive Rock. All five musicians are superb instrumentalists and the album showcases plenty of hair-raising solos, as expected form Colosseum, which was undoubtedly one of the most spectacular live acts at the time.

Despite the over five decades that passed since this music was recorded, it is still absolutely fresh and infinitely more interesting that anything else being recorded these days. Pure genius at work!

This album is one of several live archival albums by Colosseum recently released by the German Repertoire Records label, some of which already circulated as bootlegs earlier on, but these carefully remastered and beautifully packaged albums are simply irresistible.

YARDBIRDS ~ THE ULTIMATE LIVE AT THE BBC
REPERTOIRE 1464 (Barcode: 4009910146422) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1965 - 1968 Released: 2024

This is a 4CD Box Set, which collects all known live BBC recordings by the seminal British Rock group The YardbirdsFind albums by this artist, recorded between March 1965 and March 1968, presenting ninety tracks, twenty-eight of which are previously unreleased. As usual with BBC recordings, the sound quality (in most cases) is absolutely stunning, considering the equipment that existed at the time.

For some strange reason The Yardbirds seem to be almost completely forgotten these days, but considering the fact that during the first period of their existence between 1963 and 1968 they had among their ranks the three top British lead guitar players of all time: Eric ClaptonFind albums by this artist, Jeff BeckFind albums by this artist and Jimmy PageFind albums by this artist and they were de facto the origin of Led ZeppelinFind albums by this artist. The lineup, which recorded the music on this Box Set, includes vocalist Keith RelfFind albums by this artist, drummer Jim McCartyFind albums by this artist, rhythm guitarist Chris DrejaFind albums by this artist, bassist Paul Samwell-SmithFind albums by this artist and Beck or Page on lead guitar. When Samwell-Smith quit in 1966, Dreja became the bassist and the group continued as a quartet. Clapton is not playing on any of the BBC recordings, despite the fact that some other releases claim the contrary.

Listening to the chronologically organized material is like watching a documentary, which explicitly explains how British Rock developed from the humble roots of copying American Blues and Rhythm And Blues, into a full-fledged British Rock, with exquisite new original material and way of expression, which influenced everything that happened in the years to come. The last track in this collection is no other than “Dazed And Confused”, which of course explains how things proceeded from where the first incarnation of The Yardbirds disbanded.

Overall, this is a brilliant piece of musical document, which deserves to be heard by every serious music lover, in order to comprehend how Rock music developed in UK. Although a large portion of these tracks were previously released already, it’s a neat way to have a complete collection in one Box Set. The package includes a booklet with historical notes, which sadly I find lacking the proper historical perspective, but they do offer a lot of details, which I find less interesting. It is a collector’s treasure trove by all means!

COLOSSEUM ~ UPON TOMORROW
REPERTOIRE 1466 (Barcode: 4009910146620) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1969 - 1971 Released: 2023

This is a 2CD archival album by the legendary British Progressive Rock / Jazz-Rock Fusion group ColosseumFind albums by this artist, presented as the “long-lost 4th studio album”, but the album’s content is quite a complex matter, as explained below. The lineup of the classic Colosseum lineup includes vocalist Chris FarloweFind albums by this artist, bassist Mark ClarkeFind albums by this artist, guitarist Clem ClempsonFind albums by this artist, keyboardist Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist, saxophonist Dick Heckstall-SmithFind albums by this artist and drummer Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist, except on the first two tracks on CD1, which feature guitarist James LitherlandFind albums by this artist and bassist Tony ReevesFind albums by this artist.

CD1 contains four tracks recorded during two separate filmed concerts, the first a TV appearance (tracks 1-2), captured on March 26, 1969, and the second a part of a series of films about British Rock bands (tracks 3-4), captured on May 14, 1970, both of which have nothing to do with the a.m. “lost” album. The CD includes only audio material, which I find it a bit bizarre, as RepertoireFind albums on this label Records could have probably get hold of a license to the video material as well, unless they plan to release that separately?

CD2 contains eight tracks, the first five of which were supposedly intended as the “lost” album and the remaining are demos of three of those tracks. The material was recorded during the hiatus following the release of the largely successful “LiveFind albums with this title” album, which eventually led to the band falling apart by the end of 1971. The material was recorded in spring / summer of 1971, first at the legendary Lansdowne Studios (see the three demos), and later mixed it at the Advision Studios (see track 5) and finally at Jon’s home studio (see tracks1-4). Colosseum performed some of this material during their concerts in late 1971 and it also appeared on Colosseum related albums, like the debut solo album by Heckstall-Smith or the debut album by TempestFind albums by this artist.

Colosseum were just too good to last, and such superb collection of talents was bound to implode / explode, especially when the British Prog and Fusion was a constant swirl of bands being created and falling apart, often without the opportunity to leave recorded legacy behind. Lucky for us, Colosseum fans, there is a true abundance of music in Hiseman’s extensive archives, and of course we enjoyed the sensational reunion later on.

Overall, as on every other archival Colosseum album, there is plenty of sublime material herein to give us a reason to rejoice, especially since much of it are unreleased studio recordings. For Colosseum fans, this is heaven on earth of course, so let’s simply enjoy it!

GREENSLADE ~ AT THE BBC
REPERTOIRE 1468 (Barcode: 4009910146828) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

Recorded: 1973 - 1974 Released: 2024

This is an archival album by the British Progressive Rock quartet GreensladeFind albums by this artist, formed by two members of the iconic ColosseumFind albums by this artist, following the band’s demise in 1971: keyboards wizard / composer Dave GreensladeFind albums by this artist and bassist Tony ReevesFind albums by this artist. They were joined by second keyboardist / vocalist Dave LawsonFind albums by this artist and drummer Andrew McCullochFind albums by this artist. The band lasted for only three years and recorded four excellent studio albums. This 2CD album collects their live BBC concerts captured between early 1973 and late 1974, covering material released on the first three albums, presenting a total of twenty tracks.

Dave Greenslade contributed most of the music but some of it was co-composed with Lawson, who also contributed the lyrics. Reeves also contributed some tunes and co-composed others. The band had a very specific and unusual sound and ambience, as it was guitar-less (which was almost unthinkable for a Rock / Prog band), and a double keyboards front line, and a very strong Jazzy swing, which in retrospect might easily earn them an early Fusion connotation, which I personally always liked a lot.

Dave Greenslade played mostly the Hammond organ and Mellotron, while Lawson preferred synthesizers and clavinet, but they often exchanged the instruments, frequently creating a “wall of sound” effect. Reeves was a brilliant bassist, strongly Jazz influenced from his earlier career, and McCulloch was a brilliant, universal drummer, who could play anything with the same ease and elegance. In short they were a rare and dazzling collection of superb instrumentalists, which made Greenslade one of the most interesting British bands in the early 1970s.

Overall, this is an excellent document of the British Prog scene, especially in view of the fact that the group never released a live album (there were some semi-legal live albums released much later). The BBC sound quality is excellent as one might expect and the music flows briskly and interestingly for the entire duration. Although most Prog material recorded at the same time sound dated and smells a bit “musky” today, this music retained much of its initial originality over time. Definitely worth being re-visited!

BARBARA THOMPSON`S PARAPHERNALIA ~ LIVE IN CONCERT (80TH BIRTHDAY EDITION)
REPERTOIRE 1473 (Barcode: 4009910147320) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 1980 Released: 2024

This is a reissue / remaster of a live album by British Jazz saxophonist / flautist / bandleader Barbara ThompsonFind albums by this artist and her band ParaphernaliaFind albums by this artist, which included keyboardist Colin DudmanFind albums by this artist, bassist Dill KatzFind albums by this artist and drummer (and Barbara’s husband) Jon HisemanFind albums by this artist. The album presents eight tracks, six of which are original compositions by Thompson, one is by Dudman and one is by British keyboardist / composer Peter LemerFind albums by this artist. The album was originally released as a double LP and this is the first time it is released on CD. To commemorate Barbara’s 80th Birthday, this edition was expanded to include a bonus CD, called “The Flute Collection”, which presents a collection of ten tracks, which feature Barbara’s flute performances, recorded with various ensembles in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. The album was beautifully and lovingly put together, including the extensive booklet, by Ana GraceyFind albums by this artist, Barbara’s and Jon’s daughter, and includes numerous photographs, press clippings and other memorabilia, to commemorate Barbara’s passing in 2022, which was deeply mourned by her family and friends.

Paraphernalia was Barbara’s vehicle to present her wide range of compositions, which amalgamated many diverse influences, from Classical Music, World Music and of course Jazz in all its splendor of sub-genres. She was a remarkable instrumentalist, with a superb feel and outstanding improvisational abilities. She was an integral part of the British Jazz scene since the 1960s and her numerous recordings as a leader and sidewoman are a beacon of excellency and talent. She is also a great heroine as far as her personal fight with the Parkinson’s disease, which sadly overshadowed her life during the last period of her life.

Overall, this is a great opportunity to re-visit this live album, which reflects the spirit of one of the best British bands active at the time, and enjoy the superb performances by Barbara, Colin, Dill and John, which of course I had the immense pleasure to listen to in person many a time. I am sure many Paraphernalia fans will enjoy listening to this album again and now with the bonus album as a cherry on top, this is truly irresistible. Thanks to Ana and everybody else involved in this project for making this music available again!

BRIAN AUGER / TRINITY ~ LIVE AT ROCKPALAST
REPERTOIRE 1474 (Barcode: 4009910147429) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion

Recorded: 2011 Released: 2024

This is a live recording by legendary British Jazz / Fusion keyboards wizard Brian AugerFind albums by this artist, captured on October 20, 2011 in Bonn, Germany. It presents an attempt to relive the brief phenomenal success achieved in the late 1960s by Brian Auger and his TrinityFind albums by this artist with the singer Julie DriscollFind albums by this artist, which produced four quintessential early Fusion / Psychedelia British albums: “OpenFind albums with this title”, “Definitely What!Find albums with this title”, “StreetnoiseFind albums with this title” and “BefourFind albums with this title”. The lineup appearing here includes Auger on keyboards, bassist Les KingFind albums by this artist, Auger’s son Karma AugerFind albums by this artist on drums and his daughter Savannah GraceFind albums by this artist on vocals. The album presents thirteen tracks, most of which are contemporary redemptions of tracks from the a.m. albums. The accompanying DVD offset the video version of the same material.

I must admit that I had a lot of reservations about this project before I had the opportunity to listen to the music, for the obvious reasons. These four albums are an absolute “Holy Grail” of British recorded music, and any attempt to touch them in any form or shape sounds like blasphemy. But, with all due respect, it is Brian Auger’s music after all, so if anybody could be trying to revitalize it, it should be him.

I am relieved and happy to say that these new versions worked out pretty well after all; they are politely different from the originals and they respect the essence of the original music. Auger’s performances are absolutely sensational and his keyboards work lost nothing of its sensational virtuosity and inventiveness. The rhythm section keeps time, a bit less Jazzy and creatively than the original team, but times they are a-changin’. The greatest fear were of course the vocals, as nobody on earth comes close to the vocal abilities of Julie Driscoll, but Savannah skillfully manages to circumvent the challenge by avoiding copying Julie’s vocal groundbreaking innovations, and simply sticking to the tunes, which she does skillfully and without a hitch. She even manages to mimic some of Julie’s idiosyncrasies, which made me smile.

Overall, this is a respectful tribute to some of the greatest music recorded in UK in the late 1960s, brilliantly played by the Godfather of the original project, and for me the greatest organ player of all time. The fact that I managed to enjoy the music wholeheartedly means that is respectful to the origin and offers a first class aesthetic value. Thank you Brian for all the fantastic music you created over time, which made so many music-loving people so happy!

DAVID CLAYTON-THOMAS ~ DAVID CLAYTON-THOMAS
REPERTOIRE 2300 (Barcode: 4009910230022) ~ CANADA ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1971 - 1972 Released: 2006

1st album by Canadian vocalist David Clayton-ThomasFind albums by this artist, famous for his role as lead singer of the great American Jazz-Rock pioneers Blood, Sweat & TearsFind albums by this artist. Clayton-Thomas left Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1971 to pursue solo career, of which the recording of this album was the first step. Three albums later, he returned to front and lead Blood, Sweat & Tears from 1975 on, touring and occasionally recording with them as well as recording solo albums in the decades since. In many respects this debut solo album was a continuation of the work Clayton-Thomas did with Blood, Seat & Tears, utilizing his superb vocal powers to express his sensitive delivery to the max. The album includes an excellent selection of beautiful songs, both ballads and up-tempo numbers, all tastefully arranged with orchestral and brass sections comprising of the best available studio musicians and sung brilliantly. For me Clayton-Thomas always possessed one of the most distinct and magnificent voices ever and I could never get enough of his singing, although some critics have often ridiculed him cruelly – well as usual, most critics are completely deaf anyway. For people who love Blood, Sweat & Tears this is an absolute must, others might perhaps discover a gem they have been missing in their life? Wholeheartedly recommended!

DONOVAN ~ 7-TEASE
REPERTOIRE 2315 (Barcode: 4009910231524) ~ UK ~ Classic Pop

Recorded: 1974 Released: 2004

This is a reissue / remaster of the twelfth studio album by the legendary British bard / singer / songwriter DonovanFind albums by this artist, recorded in 1974 with studio musicians, including brass and string sections. The original album presents twelve original songs by Donovan. This reissue adds four bonus tracks: two single versions of songs on the album and two session outtakes.

This album was one of the last albums (only two would follow) recorded in the 1970s, which would be followed by gradual seclusion and absence from the scene, until the early 2000s, when new material was recorded and released.

The album’s subject matter is reflective / retrospective and summarizes the incredible decade that preceded the time this album was released. Although the Psychedelic 1960s were still almost in the air, Donovan, like many other Artists, was disillusioned by the failure of the hope to “change the world”, which his (and my) generation had felt during that short-lived era.

Musically, the album is full of the absolutely beautiful tunes, no one but Donovan could weave, and his mellow / yellow voice is still absolutely unique, something to long for. Strangely enough, several of these songs have a strong Jazzy (well, traditional Jazz) arrangements.

Overall, this is a classic Pop / Rock album, which lost absolutely nothing of its charm and beauty over time. The heartbreaking naiveté, which kept us floating in the air even without getting “stoned”, is still alive and kicking, with bittersweet memories pushing the ticker to beat faster while the music plays. A superb trip down the memory lane!

BECK, BOGERT & APPICE ~ BECK, BOGERT & APPICE
REPERTOIRE 2330 (Barcode: 4009910233023) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1972 - 1973 Released: 2005

1st and only album by the Anglo-American super-group Beck, Bogert & AppiceFind albums by this artist, comprising of British guitar hero Jeff BeckFind albums by this artist and American rhythm section giants, bassist Tim BogertFind albums by this artist and drummer Carmine AppiceFind albums by this artist. This threesome suffered from bad karma even before it was actually formed: following the demise of the great American group Vanilla FudgeFind albums by this artist, founding members Bogart and Appice suggested to Beck, who just disbanded his own British band at the time, to join them in forming a next band together. Although Beck agreed, a nasty car crash took him out of circulation for a while and Bogart and Appice formed the splendid CactusFind albums by this artist instead. In 1972, when Cactus broke up as did The Jeff Beck Group, finally the missed earlier opportunity arose again, this time to be consummated.

Potentially the trio had everything one might hope for: a virtuoso guitar genius, superb bass player and one of the best Rock drummers, but all the talent didn´t prevent the band from falling victim to personality clashes between the trio members, leading to a breakdown before the band reached its second anniversary. They did manage however to record one album, which shows their potential in full (a second album was attempted, but never finalized).

Great guitar licks, tasty bass and driving drumming are the basic elements behind this recording, which also includes support from a bunch of musician friends. The music is mostly written by the trio, with some adaptations of tunes from other sources. The only drawback of the album is the absence of a strong lead vocalist, but it is nevertheless a true Classic Rock memento. Warmly recommended!

CHAMBERS BROTHERS ~ THE TIME HAS COME
REPERTOIRE 2337 (Barcode: 4009910233726) ~ USA ~ Pop & Rock

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2007

This is the 3rd album by the excellent US group Chamber BrothersFind albums by this artist. The Chamber Brothers started as a Folk / Gospel / Rhythm And Blues group in the mid 1960s, but this album brought them to the attention of a much wider audience. It is an excellent example of how many US folk based groups embraced the new psychedelic sound and incorporated it into the R&B roots. The gospel like vocal harmonies are still here, but the rocky instrumentation and the psychedelic sound create just the right spice to make it deliciously groovy! It was the "summer of love" and they were surely a part of what was happening. A classic!

DONOVAN ~ OPEN ROAD
REPERTOIRE 4880 (Barcode: 4009910488027) ~ UK ~ Classic Pop

Recorded: 1970 Released: 2000

This is a reissue of the eighth studio album by the legendary British bard / singer / songwriter DonovanFind albums by this artist, recorded in 1970 with the short-lived band Open RoadFind albums by this artist, which included also bassist / vocalist Mike ThomsonFind albums by this artist and drummer / vocalist John CarrFind albums by this artist. Pianist Mike O`NeillFind albums by this artist plays on some of the songs. The album presents twelve songs, all by Donovan.

This was the first album Donovan recorded after parting ways with the producer Mickie MostFind albums by this artist, who had a strong influence on Donovan’s albums up to the seventh album “BarabajagalFind albums with this title”. The song’s subject matter returns to protest themes against industrialization and other social / political issues. Musically, in addition to the Psychedelic influences, the album also has some World Music and Jazz influences.

Musically, the album is full of the absolutely beautiful tunes, that no one but Donovan could weave, and his mellow / yellow voice is still absolutely unique, something to long for. Sadly, Donovan and Open Road parted ways and the band continued as a separate musical entity for some years, but Carr and Thomson did take part in recording of the next Donovan album called “HMS DonovanFind albums with this title”.

ROBIN TROWER ~ GO MY WAY
REPERTOIRE 4921 ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock

Recorded: 2000 Released: 2000

This is the 15th solo studio album by the legendary British Rock guitarist / vocalist / songwriter Robin TrowerFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet format with keyboardist Paul PageFind albums by this artist, bassist Livingstone BrownFind albums by this artist and drummer Alvino BennettFind albums by this artist. The album presents eleven tracks, all of which are originals by Trower. The album was recorded following a three-years break since the preceding album “Semeday BluesFind albums with this title”.

Due to quite strong Jazz influence, this music can be considered as early Jazz-Rock to some extent, similar to the material recorded by the Graham Bond OrganizationFind albums by this artist. The band managed to record only one album, one EP and several singles; all of their recordings are collected here for our pleasure. Definitely a classic, worth investigating!

ROBIN TROWER ~ WHAT LIES BENEATH
REPERTOIRE 5243 (Barcode: 4009910524329) ~ UK ~ Blues-Rock

Recorded: 2009 Released: 2011

This is a remaster of the 18th solo studio album by the legendary British Rock guitarist / vocalist / songwriter Robin TrowerFind albums by this artist, recorded in a quartet format with organist Roger CottonFind albums by this artist, bassist Livingstone BrownFind albums by this artist and drummers Sam Van EssenFind albums by this artist or Chris TaggartFind albums by this artist (on three tracks only). Some string arrangements are also present. The album presents eleven tracks, all of which are originals by Trower. The album was recorded following a four-years break since the preceding album “Another Days BluesFind albums with this title”.

STREETWALKERS ~ LIVE AT ROCKPALAST
REPERTOIRE 5327 (Barcode: 4009910532720) ~ UK ~ Classic Rock

Recorded: 1975 - 1977 Released: 2013

This is an archival live 2CD / DVD album by the excellent British Rock group StreetwalkersFind albums by this artist, captured live in Germany in 1975 and 1977 for the TV program Rockpalast. The group was co led by the charismatic vocalist Roger ChapmanFind albums by this artist and guitarist John WhitneyFind albums by this artist, who also co-wrote most of their original material. The group was formed following the legendary FamilyFind albums by this artist disbanded. Streetwalkers recorded four studio albums and one live album, and this release captures them in at their best.

CD1 recorded in 1975 presents nine tracks and the lineup includes guitarist / vocalist Bob TenchFind albums by this artist, bassist Jonathan PlotelFind albums by this artist and drummer Nico McBrainFind albums by this artist.

CD2 recorded in 1977 presents eleven tracks and the lineup includes Tench, bassist Michael FeatFind albums by this artist, drummer David DowleFind albums by this artist and keyboardist Brian JohnstoneFind albums by this artist. Due to time limitations, it misses one of the tracks present on the DVD.

The DVD includes all the material on both CDs and one additional track, as mentioned above.

Chapman and Whitney (with some help from Tench) were incredible songwriters, which is clearly evident herein, and Streetwalkers performed only original songs, as they always had plenty of material to choose from. Chapman’s incredible and highly idiosyncratic vocal performances are definitely some of the finest in British Rock music.

Overall, this is a great piece of Rock history by one of the best British Rock / Blues-Rock performers, which is always a great pleasure to revisit and more importantly remember. The Family / Streetwalkers legacy is truly monumental, sadly somewhat underappreciated IMHO. Check it out for yourself!

ZOOT MONEY / BIG ROLL BAND ~ BIG TIME OPERATOR
REPERTOIRE 5343 (Barcode: 4009910534328) ~ UK ~ Pop & Rock

Recorded: 1964 - 1968 Released: 2017

This is a wonderful Box Set collecting early recordings by British vocalist / organist Zoot MoneyFind albums by this artist and his excellent ensemble called Big Roll BandFind albums by this artist. Spread over 4 CDs, the material includes the two albums: "Zoot!Find albums with this title" (Recorded live at the Klook´s Kleek club and released in 1966) and "It Should`ve Been MeFind albums with this title" (The debut studio album released in 1965) and a plethora of additional material, which was recorded live at the Flamingo, as well as at the BBC. Also included are singles and other recordings made between 1964 and 1968, altogether ninety tracks spanning over five hours of music, worth their weight in gold. The band included such luminaries like saxophonists Nick NewallFind albums by this artist, Johnny AlmondFind albums by this artist and Clive BurrowsFind albums by this artist, guitarist Andy SummersFind albums by this artist (later of PoliceFind albums by this artist fame), vocalist / bassist Paul WilliamsFind albums by this artist and drummer Colin AllenFind albums by this artist.

Although the music reflects the British Soul and Rhythm And Blues explosion of the mid 1960s, it also clearly reveals the seeds of early Jazz-Rock and the closely intertwined, cross-genre approach that characterized the British scene at the time. Many musicians felt as comfortable playing a Rhythm And Blues gig as they would playing a Blues or a straight ahead Jazz gig, displaying the same dexterity, knowhow and passion, regardless of the circumstances.

Zoot Money and the Big Roll Band replaced Georgie FameFind albums by this artist and the Blue FlamesFind albums by this artist as the house band at the Flamingo, and the similarities between these two excellent bands are striking; both led by a vocalist / organist, with similar throaty vocal quality, both featured brass sections and a famous (to be) guitarists (in the case of the Blue Flames it was no else than John McLaughlinFind albums by this artist). Most importantly both these ensembles were swinging like hell and had a strong Jazzy feel whatever they were doing.

In retrospect the music presented by the Box Set, although definitely "dated", still sounds absolutely fresh and inspiring. Yes, nobody plays like that anymore, and what a pity it is that they don´t. In spite of the seemingly naïve melodic structures, the music is full of clever hooks and twists, and the playing is simply superb from start to finish.

Beautifully remastered, accompanied by a book with background essays, interviews and many wonderful photographs, this Box Set is a treasure chest, like many similar compilations made by the German RepertoireFind albums on this label label, which specializes in reissues. I hope some younger listeners will reach out and give this music a listen, as it could be really enlightening, especially in view of what is considered as music today. To the people who remember this stuff from their youth, like yours truly, this is an absolute must and an invigorating reminder that music was fun a long, long time ago.

BLUE CHEER ~ NEW! IMPROVED!

BEGGARS OPERA ~ PATHFINDER
REPERTOIRE 7028 ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene

3rd album from 1972. Similar to the second album with mostly self-written material, long pieces and extended solos. Musically still very interesting.

BEGGARS OPERA ~ WATERS OF CHANGE
REPERTOIRE 7029 ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene

2nd album from 1971. By the time this album was released, the group matured and developed more self-penned material, which is quite interesting. Long tracks enable them to develop the atmosphere and take extended solos, all in very good taste.

BEGGARS OPERA ~ ACT ONE
REPERTOIRE 7041 ~ UK ~ Canterbury Scene

1st album from 1970. As many other Prog groups of that period, Beggars Opera based the material of their debut album on interpretation of classical music pieces, but gave the music very unusual arrangements. This album created quite a stir at the time is is still considered as one of the best early Prog works.

NOVALIS ~ BANISHED BRIDGE
REPERTOIRE 7050 ~ GERMANY ~ Progressive Rock

1st album from 1973 by this important German Prog group. This one has English lyrics and includes the 17+ minutes long title track, considered by many as one of Prog`s greatest masterpieces.

ELECTRIC SANDWICH ~ ELECTRIC SANDWICH
REPERTOIRE 7051 ~ GERMANY ~ Progressive Rock

Only album from 1973 by this obscure but excellent German early jazz-rock group, with strong psychedelic and blues influences. The musicians were all studio professionals and the level of playing is very high. In spite of the high hopes raised by this release, the group fell apart soon after the album was released.

JANE ~ SIGN NO. 9
REPERTOIRE 7058 ~ GERMANY ~ Progressive Rock

9th album from 1979. As all Prog groups in the late 70`s moved towards more commercial approach, so did Jane, but the material is still very strong and in retrospect does not disappoint the band`s fans. Only 3 members remained in the group by the time this album was recorded.

JANE ~ GERMANIA
REPERTOIRE 7061 ~ GERMANY ~ Progressive Rock

11th and last album from 1982. The first wave of Prog was at its end by the turn of the decade and Jane, as many others, disbanded after this last album. It still has all the elements which made this band great, but the dedication and conviction are sadly lost.

JANE ~ JANE
REPERTOIRE 7062 ~ GERMANY ~ Progressive Rock

10th album from 1980. With a new lead singer (from Yugoslavia) the band was rejuveniated, but the strong instrumentalists already left by the time this one was recorded. It maintains a good level and sound of the band, but the end of the `story` is well in sight.

EMBRYO ~ ROCKSESSION
REPERTOIRE 7077 ~ GERMANY ~ Progressive Rock

5th album from 1973 by this German group. A fascinating mixture of rock, psychedelia, jazz and worl music, rarely acheived with such success by any other Prog group at that time. All the group members were excellent soloists and the jam session atmosphere is predominant, with ample space for improvisation. Excellent stuff!

EMBRYO ~ STEIG AUS
REPERTOIRE 7078 ~ GERMANY ~ Progressive Rock

4th album from 1972 by this legebdary German Prog group, which was one of the most interesting acts on the entire European early Prog scene. They managed to mix elements of psycheleia, jazz and were among the first to include also world music elements, especially Middle Eastern ones. This is a deply involving music with surprises around every corner. Fascinating!

CLARK HUTCHINSON ~ RETRIBUTION
REPERTOIRE 7088 ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock

2nd album from 1970 by this early UK Prog group which takes its name from the two founding members. As the debut album from one year earlier was mostly devoted to heavy psychedelia, this effort is much more organized with some very interesting compositions and advanced playing with jazz, blues and more psychedelic influences. In retrospect this music is years ahead of its time.

GROBSCHNITT ~ GROBSCHNITT
REPERTOIRE 7093 ~ GERMANY ~ Progressive Rock

1st album from 1972 by this legendary German Prog group, which was active through the entire decade. Probably the most important Prog phenomenon ever to come from Germany with hordes of admirers all over the world. Known for their extravagantly brilliant live shows, in the studio they are all fire and precision.

GROBSCHNITT ~ SOLAR MUSIC-LIVE
REPERTOIRE 7096 ~ GERMANY ~ Progressive Rock

6th album from 1978 by this group. Considered by many to be one the best live Prog albums ever. Long, extended and complicated compositions played with passion and total mastery by the group members, when the group was at its musical peak. The origial Solar Music suite appears on the band`s 2nd album Ballerman from 1974, but it was played by the group for many years as they most powerful piece.

GROBSCHNITT ~ MERRY-GO-ROUND
REPERTOIRE 7097 ~ GERMANY ~ Progressive Rock

7th album from 1979 by this group. Still very strong musically, but the entire Prog scene was falling apart by this time and the group could clearly forsee the dim future when they made hilarious parodies of contemporary hits. This album marks the move towards hard rock and more commercial material and is probably the last worthwhile listen for Prog fans.
